Broken jaw ignored, says accused teen by Amy Steele

Pitt Meadows mother is outraged that her 17-year-old son was in police custody for more than 10 hours with a jaw broken in two places without receiving medical treatment for his injuries. Jennifer, who can’t be identified by her last name because her son is a young offender, has filed a formal complaint with the B.C. Ambulance Service and the RCMP about the incident. The TIMES is using Kevin as a pseudonym for the 17-year-old, who can’t be named. Kevin was taken to police cells at around 4 a.m. on June 27 and

charged with four counts of assault with a weapon for allegedly using mace on a group of four people. He said that while he was in the police car a paramedic looked at him through the window of the police car. He was cleared and taken to the cells at the local detachment. Kevin said he began yelling and banging on his cell, spitting blood and repeatedly demanding an ambulance. At around 8 a.m. a paramedic checked Kevin out in the cells. Kevin said the paramedic told police that he only had a cut lip. After the paramedic left, Kevin continued to demand medical attention.

“His face was swollen out to here. “It hurt quite a bit. Ridge Meadows RCMP Inspector Derren Lench said that at the time of his arrest Kevin complained there was blood coming from his mouth. However, Lench said Kevin was so “intoxicated and belligerent in the back of the police car we couldn’t let him out of there for the ambulance attendants to actually treat him in person. They had to do a look through from outside the vehicle,” said Lench. He said when paramedics came to check him out in the cells “his main complaint” was a cut lip and the paramedics determined he was “fit to remain (in cells) and didn’t have to go to the hospital.” See JAW, Page 3

Maple Ridge woman suing over G20 wounds

A

20-year-old Maple Ridge woman who claims she was shot twice with a rubber bullet while protesting in Toronto last month is suing the Toronto police, CBC News reported Sunday. Natalie Gray said she was shot once in the chest and once just above her left elbow. “I was in a lot of pain,” Gray told The TIMES in a story that ran on July 2. “Generally the officers didn’t seem to care or take note of how injured I was.” Police deny they shot rubber bullets at the group of about 150 protesters, who were marching in a police-approved route to a temporary jail set up in a former film studio on June 28, the last day of the

G20 conference of world leaders. Photos allegedly taken by an emergency room doctor show bright red welts on the woman’s chest and elbow. Gray said she feared for her safety after two groups of police moved into the crowd about a half-hour after the protesters arrived outside the jail. Gray said she backed away down a side street. Then she saw a police officer drop down to one knee and take aim at her with a large gun. She said a fellow protester heard a police officer single her out by her blue hair colour. The first shot hit her in the chest and knocked her down, Gray told CBC News. The second hit her

elbow and tore off a piece of skin. As she tried to get up, uniformed police moved in, pushed her face into the pavement and knelt on her back, she said. “I have never been so terrified in my life,” she said. “I immediately lost control of my bladder and the officers are yelling at me, ‘Stop resisting, stop resisting.’ And I’m saying, ‘I’m not resisting. Please be gentle. Please be careful.’” Gray was later charged with obstructing a peace officer. Police claimed the shots were not rubber bullets but “muzzle blasts” -- harmless blanks meant to scare protesters, not hurt them. — Postmedia Network

Police fear for safety of missing Maple Ridge man

Pilot rescued after ultralight crashes in Pitt Lake An ultralight aircraft crashed on Pitt Lake shortly after noon on Monday. The pilot was the only person aboard and was rescued by a passing boater. He received medical attention, but told medical officials he was fine. Lance Williams of Ayla Canoes, located at Pitt Lake, said he heard the motor “sputtering and clunking” as it flew overhead just before it came down on the lake.

with it we would have had it checked out,” said Lench. “We take suspects to the hospital on a regular basis for medical treatment,” said Lench. Jennifer has received a letter from the B.C. Ambulance Service stating an internal review has been

initiated into the incident. The TIMES was unable to reach anyone with the service for comment by press time. Meanwhile, the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP sent a letter letting Jennifer know that the

RCMP conduct the first investigation into complaints. If the complainant isn’t happy with the course of that investigation they can request a review by the commission. Lench said as far as he’s aware the Ridge Meadows RCMP hasn’t received

the official complaint yet from the commission and so hasn’t started an investigation. Jennifer is unimpressed that the investigation begins with the RCMP. “Come on. Who does their own investigation inside their own group?” she asked.

A 57-year-old Maple Ridge man is missing and police are asking the public for help finding him. Ridge Meadows RCMP are trying to locate Newton Raymond Pilkey who was reported missing to police on Saturday. However, it is unknown when he disappeared from his apartment, which is in the 12100 block of 222 Street. No one has heard from him in the past two weeks. Pilkey is described as a white male, 5’07” tall, weighing 150 pounds. He has short brown/grey hair, and blue eyes. It is unknown what he was wearing. “We’re worried for Mr. Pilkey’s personal safety in this case,” Inspector Derren Lench said. “His usual patterns have not been followed for the last two weeks, so we know we’re that far behind him to start with. He has some personal worries that may have led him to possibly harming himself, so we’re trying to make contact with him as quick as we possibly can. If anyone sees him or knows of his whereabouts, we’re asking them to contact police.” Anyone with any information as to Pilkey’s whereabouts is asked to contact Ridge Meadows RCMP at 463-6251 or the police agency where he is spotted.

Man, dog rescued at Golden Ears

A

32-year-old Maple Ridge man and his dog were rescued on Friday afternoon after the man tried to save the dog who had fallen into the water. Members of Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue, the B.C. Ambulance Service, Maple Ridge Fire Department, and Ridge Meadows RCMP all came to the rescue in the lower falls area in Golden Ears Park on Friday just before 11 a.m. A group of people and a dog were walking along a trail near the falls, when the dog slipped into the water and couldn’t get out. The man jumped in to save the dog, but he couldn’t get out, so a call to emergency services went out. The man and dog were eventually rescued and neither were seriously injured.

Dealership broken into The Maple Ridge Volkswagen car dealership in the 20200 block of Lougheed was broken into and thieves made off with some brand name clothing. At about 6:15 a.m. on Thursday, police arrived at the dealership where thieves had got in through a smashed out window to the service area and stole more than $400 in clothing bearing the Volkswagen logo. So far

police have not been able to identify any suspects.

Young offender arrested A 17-year-old female young offender was arrested on Thursday after being found in violation of her probation order. At about 8:30 p.m. a member of the Ridge Meadows RCMP Street Enforcement Unit spotted the female, who is well known to police, in the 22000 block of Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge. The officer knew there was a warrant outstanding for the girl’s arrest, so he arrested her. The suspect, who was with a male youth, tried to resist her arrest and then tried to pass off a package to her friend. Police recovered the package, which contained some pills police believe are prescription medications that do not belong to her. Police also found the suspect was not obeying certain conditions of her court imposed probation order, as she was found with knives in her possession. She was held for an appearance in youth court on Friday July 23, 2010.

Fraudulent credit cards Ridge Meadows RCMP are advising all business owners and operators to beware of fraudulent credit cards. At about 7:15 p.m.

on Thursday a man went into the 7Eleven store in the 21200 block of Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge. He tried to pay for items by passing an invalid Vanilla credit card. When the store clerk advised the suspect the card was not good, he left the store. The suspect is described as a white male in his late 20s or early 30s, with a medium build. He was wearing a dark-coloured baseball hat and had short brown hair. The suspect was with another white male, who was in his 50s, had dark-coloured hair and was wearing a white T-shirt. The Vanilla credit card used started with numbers 5268, which is invalid. If any businesses come across this type of activity, they should contact police immediately.

Break-in at Bruce’s Market Ridge Meadows RCMP are investigating a break-in at Bruce’s Market in the 23900 block of Lougheed. Police were called to the store just before 3 a.m. on Sunday, and they found a glass entrance door to the business smashed out. Two computers from the store were stolen. Chamber exec resigns post

about your next move?

Organization will wait until the start of the new year to hire new executive director. mrantanen@mrtimes.com

On Friday, Dean Barbour resigned as executive director of the Chamber of Commerce serving Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Barbour was in the position since late 2007, but the chamber doesn’t plan to hire anyone to replace him until next year. It was always his plan to work as the executive director for about three years, Barbour said, and he feels with a good plan in place for the organization for the rest

of the year, it’s a good time for him to move on. “This chamber has become a respected organization and stakeholder in this community,” Barbour said. Barbour volunteered his time on numerous boards and committees and was involved with community events. He said he worked a lot of evenings and weekends and is looking forward to taking time off and spending it with his family. “We’ve made huge strides to reconnect and have a legitimate and valid voice in the community,” Barbour

said. “We’ve been able...to make it an important part of our communities.” Despite the long hours, Barbour said he enjoyed being in the community, helping to build the organization. “You’ve got to be passionate in this kind of position,” Barbour said. During the time Barbour was executive director, its membership grew from 470 to just under 700 in early 2010 and was awarded the Chamber of the Year award in 2009. In 2010, the chamber hit the century mark making

it one the province’s oldest chambers. Chamber president Jeremy Bekar said they are looking to hire a new executive director in January and, in the meantime, it will be run by Shannon Milne and Judy Swanson who currently are employed at the chamber office. After taking some time off to “re-energize,” Barbour plans to go into private business consultation and business development. A large part of his career has been spent in business development, he said.

College wants docs to accept patients

Doctors accepting new patients shouldn’t turn away those suspected of doctor shopping for sleeping pills, pain medications and other controlled substances, says the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. “Even given a history of prescription drug misuse, the College would have to be critical of a physician for refusing to see a new patient solely on the basis of such conduct with other physicians,” the college says in a bulletin to doctors. College registrar Dr. Heidi Oetter said some patients have complained that they are being discriminated against by doctors or

clinics because of their medication histories gleaned from the PharmaNet system. The database tracks every prescription dispensed in B.C. -- about 50 million annually. Community drugstores, hospital pharmacies and emergency departments and medical offices can access medications patients have been prescribed. The system is meant to improve care and safety. In the case of pharmacies and hospitals, there is an implied consent. But in the case of doctors’ offices, patients must sign a consent form. The college has not yet had to discipline any doctors for snooping

or “surfing” the database, Oetter said. Pharmacies first got access to the PharmaNet system in 1995. Emergency departments were given access in 1999 and doctors offices were linked into the system in 2006. In addition to the PharmaNet access, the college has a red flag system in which it sends an alert to all the doctors who have prescribed medications to a patient who has seen at least five different doctors in the previous month. Oetter said that doesn’t presume the medications obtained through such appointments were under “false pretences.” — Postmedia Network

Histories of neighbourhoods weave overall tale of Maple Ridge

O

ne of the first things a newcomer to Maple Ridge district will notice is that “Maple Ridge” is not the only name in use. Other frequently heard names are Haney, Hammond, Whonnock, Webster’s Corners, Ruskin, Albion, and Yennadon. These refer to the original historic neighbourhoods, each of which once had its own post office and community centre that included stores, schools, churches and halls. WHY DID THEY CALL IT MAPLE RIDGE? One of the earliest European settlers in the district was John McIver, a Scot, who homesteaded the land now known as the Maple Ridge Golf Course. As his property incorporated a fine ridge topped by Maple trees, McIver called his farm “Maple Ridge”. By 1874, several small communities had sprung up, consisting of a few families each, on the north side of the Fraser River in the areas that would become Haney, Hammond, Pitt Meadows, Whonnock, Albion, Ruskin and Webster’s Corners. One of the problems of small, isolated communities is that they tend to stay small and isolated unless some means is found to build roads between them. It was with this problem in mind that a group of forward-thinking men gathered at McIver’s farm to discuss incorporating the whole district between the Pitt River and the Stave to allow taxation for road building. The name for the district was taken from McIver’s farm and so we

became “Maple Ridge” in 1874. THE COMMUNITY POST OFFICES When the district incorporated in 1874, the total population was about 20 families with the majority located between Hammond and Kanaka Creek. The closest thing to a centre was the area that is now the foot of Laity Street where it meets River Road. This is where the first post office was established in 1876 with the name “Maple Ridge Post Office”. All settlers had to travel to this location to get their mail, likely via the Dewdney Trunk which was the first trail/road to traverse the district. In 1885, the completion of the CPR caused the community to rethink the location of their post office. It no longer made sense to have it up on the ridge when it could be near the railway. Three new post offices were opened that year in Haney, Hammond and Whonnock. The Maple Ridge post office was closed at that point and there wasn’t one of that name again until 1970 when Canada Post closed the small offices in favour of one central one in the downtown core. The first post office located away from the river bank was opened at Webster’s Corners in 1891. Post Master James Murray Webster had to walk to the Haney Station to get the mail and then carry it back to Corners. Ruskin’s post office opened in 1898. In 1907, Albion got a new name along with its post office. Formerly known as East Haney, this was not distinctive enough for

the postal service and so residents were asked to come up with a new name. The last post office in the district opened in 1911 and also required the adoption of a new name. The area we know as Yennadon was formerly called South Lillooet. FULL CIRCLE: BACK TO MAPLE RIDGE There was a series of major controversies over postal name changes which reflect how important the old neighbourhoods were to their citizens. In the 1950s, considerable conflict arose in Hammond when residents were informed that the price of door-to-door delivery was the indignity of having to change their postal address to “Haney, B.C.” where the sorting station was located. The final solution was to change “Haney” to “Maple Ridge” as the more neutral name. As postal districts became larger and door-to-door delivery from a central station more common, all the local postal addresses were gradually taken under the umbrella of “Maple Ridge”. The name of the first and most short-lived local postal address [which had only applied to the area around the foot of Laity Street when first established] was to be applied to the whole district as of 1970. While “Maple Ridge” was certainly less contentious than having “Haney” imposed over the entire area, we still see the Whonnock Post Office struggling to retain its own name. Whonnock is the last rural post office in the Fraser

Valley to retain its postmaster and original name. LOCAL HERITAGE RESOURCES Since 1956, the Maple Ridge Historical Society has been active in preserving and presenting the history of our community. Today, we have more than 90 members, employ three staff in our museum facilities, and work closely with the District of Maple Ridge to provide museum and archives services and care of our built heritage. It is our vision to ensure that every citizen of Maple Ridge benefits from

a greater understanding of our community through the presentation of our history. We are committed

to reaching out to all our citizens, visitors and to the next generation in ways that bring history to life.

armers, buskers, history displays, vintage cars and carnival games will all be part of the day-long celebration of the heritage of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows this Saturday at Memorial Peace Park — but once again there won’t be any fireworks as the weather has been too hot and dry. The official name of the community celebration is the Ridge Meadows Heritage Days and chief organizer Wendy McAlpine hopes it will expand to more than one day in the future. Last year, more than 2,000 people attended Heritage Days and organizers are expecting even more people this year visiting the tents and events in downtown Maple Ridge. The Maple Ridge Museum will have displays to salute the Hammond Mill, the Chamber of Commerce and the 125-year-old Whonnock Post Office. The Pitt Meadows Museum will share a tent with the Maple Ridge Museum to showcase Pitt Meadows history. In the same tent, the Family History Group, which is part of the Maple Ridge Historical Society, will have

information about how to research your ancestry and family tree. (The group meets on the first Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Maple Ridge Library.) In addition, Parks and Leisure Services will have a large map showing old street names from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. In a smaller tent, the Ridge Meadows Seniors Society will have information about their various programs. The Fraser Valley Metis Association will also have a display and members will be frying up bannock. From 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. there will be minicarnival games for children including balloon-dart games, basketball throw and an old-fashioned fishpond. The official ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. at the bandstand with greetings from the communities’ two mayors and a blessing from Katzie elder Willie Pierre. After the official ceremony, vintage cars will arrive at around 11:15 a.m. for a show and shine. At 3:30 p.m., BIA executive director and Maple Ridge’s citizen of the year Ineke Boekhorst will present a Citizen’s Prize for first-place

and runner-up cars. At around 11:30 a.m., the Ridge Meadows Seniors Society will provide entertainment with the Maple Ridge Senior Dance Stars, the Millennium Singers and line dancing at the bandstand. The Mayor’s Hamburger Barbecue will be hosted by the Kiwanis Club and Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin will be flipping burgers from 4 to 6 p.m. Burgers are free for seniors 65 years and older and for others they cost a toonie. The day will end with bandstand entertainment featuring local performers. Ivan Boudreau with Jenny Bice, roca and Aurelius will perform before the evening’s headliner Barney Bentall with Eric Reid. For the second year in a row, there won’t be fireworks as the fire department has said it’s too dry. For people arriving on their bicycles, the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition will organize a bike lockup. ❚ The Ridge Meadows Heritage Days is a free event and will be held at Memorial Peace Park in downtown Maple Ridge on July 31 from 9 a.m. to dusk.

Bus drivers victimized

Port Coquitlam Provincial Court Judge Pedro de Couto has given us a lot to think about in sentencing Colin Moore, convicted of choking a female bus driver in Maple Ridge so hard he lifted her right out of her seat. As he was going through his reasons for the sentence he chose, he addressed the other bus drivers sitting in the courtroom. The victim wasn’t there because, well, she’s too traumatized and doesn’t know when she’ll even get back to work. “The courts in a criminal setting are not here to seek vengeance...The courts have to act impartially in a balanced and fair way and take a position that’s just and fair in the circumstances.” That makes sense. It’s a laudable sentiment that many should consider when criticizing the justice system. Except that the bus drivers, at least the ones interviewed outside the court room by The TIMES, didn’t want vengeance. They want a deterrent. And they didn’t get one. Moore only got a three-month conditional sentence — served as house arrest for a month and then with a curfew — with nine months of probation. Meanwhile, his victim will likely suffer for years to come. As for other bus drivers, they wanted to a message sent to all the other people who assault them on a daily basis. Bus drivers face this scourge all the time, from being spat on to yelled at to punched and kicked, and even worse. They are fed up with being vulnerable to attack. Somebody going to jail might have helped their cause, but we won’t know after this case.

Toughen up tax rules

They say you can’t cross a chasm in two small jumps, but it appears that hasn’t stopped our government from trying. As reported in the Globe and Mail, the Canada Revenue Agency is preparing to loosen the rules around voluntary disclosure for big-time tax dodgers. The new regulations will reportedly allow Canadians with secret offshore accounts to fess up at less expense, with only the past 10 years of undeclared earnings open to scrutiny by tax collectors. The move will bring Canada’s tax laws more in line with those in the United States — but it only goes half the distance. Unlike our southern neighbour, which has been turning the screws on Swiss banks, forcing them to turn in their tax-dodging clients, Canada is doing nothing to drive the errant well-to-do into the open. Without that component, the plan is of little value. Why would cheaters volunteer to pay a decade of back taxes when there is no greater risk of discovery now than there was when they started? The new rule simply means the few who are foolish enough to get caught won’t pay as stiff a penalty as they would have otherwise. If the federal government ever wants to see its lost revenue, it will have to produce a cane in addition to this new carrot. ■ Your View Last week’s question If the Evergreen Line is built, do you plan on using it for your daily commute? ❚ Mailbag Off-road user trashes pristine wilderness Editor:

In recent days another offroad vehicle user has elected to vandalize property along the north end of 256th Street near the Justice Institute, in order to gain access to local riding trails (See the photo on this page). It has become apparent that some off-road users have a total disregard for either private or public property. Recreational users of Blue Mountain should be up in arms over this type of destructive behaviour. The hard work being done by groups, such as the Blue Mountain Motorcycle Club, whose members are attempting to improve, protect and clean up the trails, and those companies trying to develop and attract industry to the area has been a wasted effort. Maybe it is time to revisit the closure of Blue Mountain to any form of motorized vehicles — a better choice however would be for employees of the responsible governing bodies to get out of their offices and enforce existing laws and statutes and penalize the offenders. There is legislation in force to deal with this — start dealing with it. Doug Buker Maple Ridge

Renters don’t care about homes Editor:

Re: Neighbours demand too much, TIMES Mailbag, July 23 As a responsible and clean homeowner taking pride in our family home, we unfortunately live between two rented homes that are

nothing less than sad. These lazy neighbours are irresponsible people living on either side of my wellmaintained/manicured yard. They are lethargic in keeping up their homes to make the neighbourhood look nice, as both properties have exterior vinyl siding homes and are disgustingly filthy with caked layers of dust on their siding that makes it look drab as it has not been powerwashed for years.

I feel that the City of Pitt Meadows should make a bylaw whereby it is compulsory for both homeowners and renters to maintain their property to acceptable cosmetic standards. There are no excuses, as they could hire someone to wash the exterior siding of their home or do their part to water the lawn that adjoins ours. We live in South Pitt Meadows and this is a nice area. There are good property owners and a few bad ones as there are good renters and lazy ones. We are just lucky. The bottom line is do some yard work whether you own or rent, as these homes are an unsightly blemish on well-maintained ones. The landlords should be contacted to inform them that their property is not maintained to acceptable standards. It’s like putting one nice car between two dirty ones on a car lot for sale. I am sorry to say that foreign land owners need to get on top of their projects, just not sit on their backsides and collect the rent. If the renters cannot do some simple maintenance and upkeep then boot them

out and bring in more responsible people who will respect the homes and neighbours and hire a property management team. Unfortunately, we were one of the first buyers in this fairly new development and did not foresee renters taking over. You cannot choose your neighbours but that should not let them off the hook. Shame on them for not even doing basic yard work and house washing with both making good incomes. If I ever won the lottery, I would kick their sorry backsides out and manage these properties properly with responsible people. It is sad that some blight on a tree makes the whole tree look bad. For these two neighbours, get off your backs and do some work, like shovelling snow in the winter instead of relying on good Samaritans to save the day and make your life easier by sliding into the shovelled out spaces you are too lazy to get out there and do your share. Get out and powerwash your exterior of the home and send the bill to the landlord but do something rather than nothing. Be a neighbour, not a nuisance, and open your eyes to see that your laziness affects others. Hershel Montague Pitt Meadows

Cops should stake out pubs for impaired drivers Editor:

Re: On the hunt for impaired drivers, TIMES, July 23 A most interesting article. I am wondering why the RCMP are sneaking around? Why don’t they go to the source? Why don’t they park their cruisers on the street outside the parking areas of the local pubs? This will

become even easier when they have the right to pull over a driver at random and check them for alcohol. And wow, zero tolerance will empty those parking lots. Future historians will be mystified by our hypocrisy when they see that we allowed/required pubs and restaurants to provide parking for their patrons, then penalize them for using this facility. Bruce Wilson Maple Ridge Editor’s Note: The article does say that local RCMP stage checkpoints near certain bars and that the owners of said bars are not appreciative, according to the police.

Nurses a dream

Editor:

I am writing with regards to an incident that took place on July 14. My daughter, who was pregnant at the time, had to be induced due to gestational diabetes. After the induction procedure the nurses monitor the patient for one hour and if nothing transpires they are sent home. During this process she went into labour, and delivered her baby in the washroom of Ridge Meadows Hospital. Our concern right now is that closing our local hospital maternity ward would mean that our expectant mothers would have to go elsewhere to deliver babies, and after this experience I certainly would not want to see this happen to other young mothers. Of course all was well with mom and baby. My daughter was in labour for all of an hour and a half, if not for the maternity ward in the hospital would they have had to send her and her babe to another hospital for aftercare. ❚ Community Arts

‘Frabjabulous show’ heats up the summer Ann Blackwell and Tammy Routley team up for New Creations event. Ann Blackwell and Tammy Routley met in 2003, during the spring Art Studio Tour, when Ann opened her home studio to the public. They connected right away, sharing a playful, inquisitive approach to their art-making. So when Ann asked Tammy to join her in an exhibition this summer, Tammy agreed enthusiastically. Ann is a mixed media artist, currently focusing

on beadwork and dollmaking. She is also creating a “Mandala of Friends” for this show. Tammy works in illustration, combining hand-drawn images with computer colouring. She makes puzzles, cards, and magnets. The name of the show is derived from Lewis Carroll’s word “frabjous” in the Jabberwocky poem (“oh frabjous day” being the

day that the jabberwocky is slain). Looking for something with a few more syllables, they soon found “frabjabulous” in the Urban Dictionary, and it stuck. ❚ Visit New Creations Art Gallery & Studios during the month of August. Opening reception is Friday, Aug. 6, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The gallery is located behind Jim’s Pizza, at 22409 McIntosh Ave., Maple Ridge.

Burrards’ last season game on Wednesday The Maple Ridge Burrards play the Langley Thunder on Wednesday evening at the Langley Events Centre at 7:45 p.m. This will be their last regular season game. With one game to go their season record is eight wins and nine losses and they are tied with Coquitlam and Nanaimo for third place standing

Silver at Summer Games

Local ball players collect bronze

Five Ridge Meadows players from the Fraser Valley North Baseball – Cole Stovman, Tarin Richardson (above), Matthew Strother, Bayley Germain, Cole Johnson – took part in the B.C. Summer Games and won a bronze medal by beating Victoria Island 3-2 in a thriller. The game was tied at the bottom of the seventh with two outs, when a base hit to third scored the winning run. Even more nerve-racking was the semifinal game where our boys played in a nail-biter that rocked back and forth for more than three hours. Unfortunately for Fraser Valley North they lost a heartbreaker in the bottom of the ninth with a final score of 8-7 to Fraser River Delta – the team that ultimately won the gold medal.

Kwon putts his way to gold medal The young golfer is off to New Mexico after his win at the B.C. Summer Games last week in Langley. Kevin Kwon of Pitt Meadows mastered the challenging Redwoods Golf Course Saturday to take the boys gold medal at the B.C. Summer Games. Kwon, the reigning 2009 B.C. Juvenile Boys’ champion, shot a six-under 65 from the blues on a course noted for its narrow fairways lined with the trees that gave the course its name. “I think that’s the best I’ve ever played,” said Kwon who left Langley immediately after the medal ceremonies to catch a flight to New Mexico, where he will be playing in the prestigious Boys Junior Americas Cup. “I tried to focus on what I had to do. I put the ball in the right places most of the time. “Winning here is definitely uplifting, going into the Americas Cup.” Kwon said the difference between his first round Friday, when he shot a leading one over par, and Saturday’s round was his putting. Asked if he had fun, Kwon said, “It’s hard not to have fun when you are playing that well.” A contingent of 61 players, aged 12 to 16 from eight different zones, teed up at the Redwoods Golf club to compete in the B.C. Mixed Zone Team and Individual boys and girls categories at the Township of Langley 2010 B.C. Summer Games. ❚
