im Osler fears a giant grass fire will break out on the vacant lot directly behind the apartment building he manages and he’s unimpressed that the District of Maple Ridge doesn’t appear to be taking any action. The vacant lot is just south of 224 Street and North Avenue behind Fraserview Apartments. When the TIMES visited Friday some grass on the site was six-feet high. There was also a thicket of blackberry bushes and garbage strewn throughout the thick vegetation. The lot is across from the formerly crime-ridden and dilapidated Northumberland Court strata complex, which is currently vacant. Osler said he first started complaining to the district about garbage piling up on the property five months ago and he has been complaining about the height of the vegetation for a month and a half. He even called the fire department to complain about the likelihood of a grass fire on the lot. “If we get a grass fire in there there’s a chance my building will

go up in smoke,” he said. “It’s a bloody mess.” Osler said he’s concerned that someone walking up 224 Street from the pub at the end of the road will throw a cigarette butt into the lot in the middle of the night and a fire will break out. He believes that bylaw enforcement is more vigorous in wealthier parts of the community. “(It’s) just typical when you get south of 224 and Lougheed. Who gives a damn? The city doesn’t,” he said. “Different strokes for different folks.” Bill Turner, who manages another apartment building in the neighbourhood, is also concerned about the lot as well as an abandoned building where police busted a grow-op a couple of years ago. He believes both are fire hazards that should be addressed. Osler questions whether the city would be liable if a fire broke out on the vacant lot because he’s complained multiple times and it hasn’t been cleaned up. The TIMES was unable to reach anyone from the district for comment as of press time.

Upfront Police Beat Good Samaritans aid folks stranded on Pitt Lake

Ridge Meadows RCMP want to thank the good Samaritan boaters who went to the aid of people whose boat had engine troubles. Police received a call from the group in distress just after 3:30 p.m. on Friday on Pitt Lake just east of Grant Narrows regional boat launch. The good Samaritans, who are familiar with the lake, were just heading out and went to help the stranded boaters, towing them to a safe location so their boat could be repaired. ❚ Ridge Meadows RCMP are investigating the theft of a red 1990 Toyota pickup truck from the 11900 block of 221 Street in Maple Ridge. The theft occurred sometime between 2 a.m. Thursday morning when the owner parked it and 9 a.m. The truck had British Columbia licence plate #BH9870 on it at the time it was stolen. ❚ A two-vehicle crash in the 27000 block of River Road in Maple Ridge sent a 61-year-old Maple Ridge woman to Ridge Meadows Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The crash took place at about 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, when the woman’s Volkswagen Golf collided with a GMC pickup truck. The 40-yearold male driver of the pickup was not injured. The injured woman was charged with an offence under the Motor Vehicle Act. ❚ Thanks to an alert citizen, Ridge Meadows RCMP’s Street Enforcement Unit was able to recover two stolen Bobcat Sweepers. The policing team made the recovery at approximately 1:40 p.m. on Friday after the citizen read about the property being stolen in a business break-in. The business and police are happy about the recovery of the property, but they are still on the lookout for the suspects and other property. ❚ Ridge Meadows RCMP are investigating a break-in to a home in the 21400 block of River Road in Maple Ridge. The break-in occurred just after 6 p.m. on Saturday, when thieves pried open the front door to the residence. A laptop computer was stolen. ❚ A motorcyclist was sent to Ridge Meadows Hospital with non-life threatening injuries after he collided with a car. The crash occurred at 3 p.m. on Sunday in the 25400 block of Dewdney Trunk Road. The motorcyclist was charged with following too closely and driving without a valid driver’s licence.

Ladd overwhelmed by turnout I

n the middle of an ice rink, Andrew Ladd lifts the Stanley Cup over his head as a crowd of people clap and cheer. But this isn’t game six of the playoffs, this is the Planet Ice arena off 105th Avenue in Maple Ridge — the rink nicknamed after local legend Cam Neely — and the people cheering him are his former neighbours and teammates. Ladd has come home and he’s brought the cup with him. On Sunday, a whopping 2,200 people arrived at Planet Ice to see Maple Ridge’s golden boy and take a picture of the greatest prize in hockey. He won his ﬁrst Stanley Cup in 2006 with the Carolina Hurricanes, and he brought it home to huge crowds in Memorial Park. Now, having just come off his win with the Chicago Blackhawks, Ladd hoists the silver trophy with the ease of a man comfortable with its heft. “You know what to expect the second time,” he said of winning the Stanley Cup. His previous experience in Carolina taught him how to react — to spend a little more time on the ice, soaking things up — and prepared his family for the attention he would get. Or so he thought. “We honestly couldn’t go anywhere in Chicago with the cup,” recalls Ladd. While Carolina had celebrated the win, they had nothing on the frenzy in Chicago. “We’d shut down streets and cars and restaurants. It was crazy,” he said. While no streets were shut down in Maple Ridge, Stanley Cup fever had deﬁnitely caught on strong, as “We honestly couldn’t go any- people waited hours in line to where in Chicago with the cup. We’d get Ladd’s autograph. One of his reasons for shut down streets.” continuing to bring the cup to Maple Ridge, he said, is Andrew Ladd to recognize and inspire the players in the Ridge Meadows minor hockey league — the league he played in growing up. As well, he wanted to thank the coaches who helped him become the hockey star he is today. “RM minor hockey has had some great coaches. For them to volunteer their time to help kids...and me out is special. And that’s part of bringing it back here and saying thanks to them.” Having brought the cup to Children’s Hospital, Alouette Lake and now Maple Ridge, Ladd looks toward a new chapter with the Atlanta Thrashers. Traded due to the salary cap problems of the Blackhawks, Ladd feels it’s a chance for him to take on a bigger role both offensively and defensively. “I’ve played for a lot of deep teams and I haven’t really been able to show what I can do. I think I can bring a lot more to the table,” he said.

aple Ridge Councillor Al Hogarth wants the district to investigate further tax rebates for developers and land owners as a means of revitalizing the downtown core. The district currently has a downtown revitalization tax exemption bylaw that allows tax concessions over a period of years if a building is over ﬁve storeys and additional concessions if the building is a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certiﬁed building. However, Hogarth wants to

broaden how tax rebates are used. Hogarth envisions giving tax exemptions upfront, after a project is completed, rather than given over a period of multiple years. The goal of the tax rebates would be to create a pedestrian friendly core, create retail and employment opportunities in the core and create green buildings that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Hogarth pointed out that the existing bylaw has been around for a decade but hasn’t been used. Meanwhile council has been trying to encourage certain properties to redevelop for the same

time and nothing has happened. He said part of the problem is the existing tax exemptions would go to the end user, either a tenant or buyer of a strata unit, for example, and “not the guy that’s taking the cash out of his pocket and taking a risk.” Hogarth wanted council to endorse a task force of council members, district staff, private citizens and the business community to make recommendations on implementing a new tax rebate program. However, council decided to refer the issue to staff for a report as part of a review of the existing bylaw.

Councillor Craig Speirs said he likes the idea of encouraging commercial and more employment in the downtown as well as mixed use but said council has to be careful because it’s public money at stake. Councillor Linda King said she has two concerns about tax exemptions: fairness to already established businesses that have been paying taxes for years and she said “in many cities in Canada and the U.S. when tax exemption(s) are over the business folds and they go away.” However, she said she was happy to have a discussion

about the topic. Councillor Judy Dueck said Maple Ridge should look at other municipalities, for example Surrey, which established tax exemptions in the Whalley city core. “People weren’t going there so that’s what they needed to do,” she said. “From my understanding...they’ve had great success so if the end result is accomplishing an area that was once less than desirable to an area that is revitalized then...if we get what we want everyone beneﬁts. I think we all around the table can think of an area in our own community that needs some help.”

ear and cougar encounters are on the rise in Metro Vancouver as the animals ﬂee the lingering snowpack to ﬁnd food in residential areas.

As always, improperly disposed-of garbage is the chief cause for their migration into Metro neighbourhoods, according to wildlife ofﬁcials. But this season there are some environmental factors as well. “We’ve had a very long wet spell in June which may have delayed the bears’ natural foods,” said Tony Webb of the North Shore Black Bear Society. “And coming down the mountain is more accessible to them nowadays with all the tracks that have been made – walkways that have been made up into the forests.” There have been a number of bear and cougar encounters in residential areas in the past few weeks, including at a Maple Ridge elementary school – a cougar killed some livestock and was caught and killed – on Port Coquitlam’s Traboulay Poco trail and even at a Campbell River resident’s back door. “In valley bottoms, the berry crops are ripening up around residential areas and that may bring bears into those areas,” said Chris Doyle, a conservation ofﬁcer in the Sea to Sky region.

“Then later in the summer other berry crops ripen at higher elevations, so typically we see them at low- to midelevations at this time of year and then in another month they’ll go to the higher

elevations.” Until then, the unseasonably heavy snow on the North Shore mountains will likely ensure bear and cougar encounters continue. Besides storing garbage properly, people are advised to take down bird-feeders, clean barbecues after every use and wipe down old hot tub covers. “Surprisingly enough, hot tub covers, as they age, let off formaldic acid which to the bear, makes it think it’s an ants’ nest and they come along to the hot tub cover and destroy it looking for the nest,” said Webb. He advised hot tub owners to wash the covers with ammonia to make them less attractive to bears as an apparent food source. A Maple Ridge-based conservation ofﬁcer chalked up the rise in cougar sightings to an overall rise in the local cougar population. “I’m seeing at least a 25-per-cent increase this year over what I’d normally see and that’s probably environmentally related to natural cycles in the population,” said Terry Myroniuk, who oversees conservation efforts from Port Moody to Mission. “Most wild feline species have cyclical population growth spurts where the population will come up and down.” Myroniuk said anyone hiking near mountains and ravines in the Lower Mainland this season should always expect that cougars and bears are nearby.

Those hikers should also be aware of the late-melting snow, another hazard. “There was not that much snow during the Olympics, but then we got a huge dump and there’s still some remnants of it in the backcountry,” said Tom Jones of North Shore Search and Rescue. “Our primary concern is people getting onto snowfields with running shoes on and these snowfields have large runouts down into what we call scree slopes or boulder fields.”

Metro wants tax powers by Kelly Sinoski Postmedia Network

Metro Vancouver should have the power to impose personal income and sales taxes on the region’s residents to help pay for bridges and other expensive infrastructure, says a report commissioned by the regional authority. Metro directors found the idea “enticing,” but figured they would have a tough time convincing the provincial government to grant them new tax powers. The report, by Trent University Prof. Harry Kitchen, suggests Metro Vancouver should lobby the B.C. government for permission to impose the taxes that would be set locally and “piggybacked” on the provincial income tax and the harmonized sales tax. A one-per-cent surcharge on the 2008 provincial personal income tax, for instance, would have yielded $37 million, Kitchen said. On the HST, it would bring in $450 million. “Municipal governments face significant infrastructure funding challenges and revision to the tax distribution system should be contemplated,” Kitchen told Metro’s finance committee Thursday. “Municipalities should have access to more than the property tax. The property tax does not get revenue from people commuting or visiting the municipalities. This would expand the range of local taxes.” Metro Vancouver could justify the new taxes on the grounds that residents and visitors travelling through the region use services they don’t necessarily pay for, Kitchen said. The taxes could augment the property tax - Metro’s major source of tax revenue - or replace it. Kitchen said the level of spending and growth over time in Metro has been “extremely modest,” with no evidence of unnecessary tax burdens or tax increases. “The annual average increase in the property tax

burden per capita for Metro Vancouver’s services over the past two decades has amounted to nothing more than the price of a couple of cups of coffee per year,” he said. He said residents will argue against any increase in property taxes, but they “unfortunately have to realize that property taxes fund a range of public services that make this country what it is.” “There is no threshold that says you can only take the property tax,” he said. “My argument is, you as local councils should have the opportunity to use property taxes, plus a personal income tax and a sales tax.” Vancouver Coun. Raymond Louie said the concept of additional revenue streams was “enticing,” especially to capture a “wider set of people not necessarily paying their fair share” for services, such as commuters and visitors. But committee members noted it would be a long-term project to convince the province to make such changes. Richmond Coun. Harold Steves suggested Metro start lobbying the provincial government immediately, noting that Tacoma, Wash., built its transit system and is redeveloping its downtown core with revenue collected from personal income taxes.

“I was quite impressed with what they were able to do,” he said. “Their philosophy was, the whole region should pay for transit. It seems to me big things like that should be paid for by [everyone].” Steves said personal income taxes could help preserve agricultural land because the money would come from throughout the region, including from cities such as Vancouver that don’t have any farmland left and don’t feel a need to contribute. He noted one of the reasons Metro Vancouver is seen as efﬁcient, with low taxes, is that it “does things on the cheap.” He pointed to the Iona sewage treatment plant, which has been polluting the Fraser River since 1959, yet Metro keeps putting off replacing it. “It’s probably the most polluting thing Metro Vancouver is doing and we keep tabling it because we

don’t have the money to pay for it,” he said. Malcolm Brodie, Richmond’s mayor and chairman of Metro’s ﬁnance committee, said he thinks most municipalities would support having the option of levying another tax. “One of the funding problems we have at the local level is getting only eight cents out of every tax dollar that’s raised,” Brodie said. “At some point, some adjustments have to be made to give local governments a more responsive revenue regime.” Municipalities balked at a recommendation in Kitchen’s report that they hand over control of sewage, water and garbage collection to Metro Vancouver, saying that would cost them their autonomy. The report was sent back to the ﬁnance committee and Metro’s 22 municipalities for analysis before any decisions are made.

itt Meadows is considering a change to zoning bylaws that would ban medical marijuana production in the municipality. Individuals who hold the proper permit from Heath Canada can grow marijuana for medical consumption in Pitt Meadows and across Canada. Patients can obtain a permit from Health Canada allowing them to possess marijuana to alleviate symptoms associated with cancer, multiple sclerosis, HIV/AIDS, severe arthritis and spinal cord injuries and disease. A separate permit, also issued by Health Canada, is required to grow the drug. A grower’s permit can be held by the patient or a person selected by the patient to provide the drug. Although the federal government allows production of medical marijuana, advocates of medical marijuana have been in a tug of war with municipalities that claim production of the drug poses a signiﬁcant safety hazard for residents. Medical marijuana advocates are calling the proposed zoning amendment by Pitt Meadows banning legal marijuana production in the municipality immoral and reprehensible. “If I sound upset, it’s because I am,” said Kirk Tousaw, executive director of the Beyond Prohibition Foundation. Tousaw is also a lawyer who has represented a number of compassion clubs – establishments where patients can purchase marijuana – and marijuana permit-holders in his practice. The Pitt Meadows bylaw amendment would ban all marijuana production, including production by individuals holding permits from Health Canada allowing them to grow and harvest the plant for medicinal purposes.

The proposed amendment makes no mention of possible penalties. Pitt Meadows officials contend they are trying to do what they can to protect their residents from fire danger and drug trafficking. Calling the permitted marijuana production sites, “fires waiting to happen,” Mayor Don MacLean said many “so-called legal grow-ops are not operating within the spirit of the law.” MacLean pointed to a bust at a permitted production facility in Maple Ridge. The facility had exceeded the number of plants allowed by their permit by more than 1,500 plants. “Sounds like an excuse to me,” Tousaw said about the mayor’s concerns. If permit holders who exceed the number of plants they are allowed are subject to law enforcement, “it has nothing to do with health or safety,” he said. The Pitt Meadows Fire Department has not had to respond to a fire at a permitted marijuana production facility so far, according to fire chief Don Jolley. “We are, however, concerned that the existence of permitted operations are not subject to rigorous inspections for fire and building code and land-use compliance and as such may have very similar hazards related to life safety and fire as illegal operations,” he said in an e-mail. The department has responded to multiple fires at illegal marijuana production sites, including two large fires in the past year, according to Jolley. MacLean also wants the city and the local RCMP to be told the location of licensed marijuana production facilities within the municipality. Health Canada only provides information on growers to police engaged in an investigation so police may determine if a suspected growing operation is a permitted production facility.

Province gambling with lives

When word got out that a Metro Vancouver woman was suing the provincial government for not stopping her gambling losses, it provoked a couple of reactions. One was laughter at the gall of the woman, who seems in denial about taking personal responsibility for her actions. But the second one was shock at just how high her losses were. Joyce Ross managed to blow an estimated $330,000 in three years at two casinos. She signed up for the volunteer exclusion program, but says she was still allowed to gamble and lose and now she is suing. Think of it. She is not a professional athlete or movie star with money to burn. She is a regular person who got hopelessly addicted to gambling. No, we don’t think the government should be on the hook for her losses. Yes, the government needs to do more to get problem gamblers help before they blow everything they have and more. Obviously, the exclusion program has deep flaws that need to be fixed. Then, last Thursday, the provincial government launched a major expansion of online gambling, making B.C. the first in North America to legalize and regulate online casino games. Remember, the Liberals were the ones who said they wouldn’t expand gambling in this province. Well, until they saw the river of cash gambling produced. The government stayed on message this week, saying that B.C. residents spend money in illegal, offshore sites that offer no protection. So people here will be safer now under the new system. And it will mean more money for healthcare. We’re getting all warm and fuzzy at being protected from illegal sites, but there is a cost when you make it this easy for people to gamble. Remember the name Joyce Ross and her $330,000. There are many more people just like her. There’s a reason why some casinos are trying to crack down on loan sharks who hang around their establishments, as well as addicted parents who leave their children in their vehicles while they blow the food money. NDP critic for housing and social development Shane Simpson said the government has slashed funding to gambling addiction programs. “I’ve seen no evidence here that there are programs or that the work has been done to ensure that people are going to be protected under this system. So it concerns me a lot,” he said following Thursday’s presentation. My parents are part of a group of people trying to slow down trafﬁc on 132nd Avenue and 224th Street. People have called these roads a highway. The fastest speed has been clocked more than 120 km/h, but the speed limit is 50 km/h. Because of that I’m not allowed to ride my horse or bike down those roads by myself. Horses have been killed or seriously injured riding down those roads. I feel very scared when someone goes speeding by and doesn’t give us room. Have you seen those nicely painted signs along the roads with words underneath? Or have you been driving too fast to notice? We’ve put a lot of work into those signs, so I hope now you’ll slow down and really admire our signs. While driving down the road, did you see that deer jump over a fence, or those coyotes disapear into the woods? Well that’s exactly what you miss when you speed down the roads. This summer, thousands of people heading to and from the B.C. interior and Lower Mainland will pass the famous Hope slide on Highway 3. Many will stop to view the massive environmental devastation that this natural event caused more than 45 years ago when 46 million cubic meters of pulverized rock, mud, and debris came down the mountainside with a force so great it completely displaced the water and mud in the lake below and scraped away trees and vegetation on the opposite side of the valley. In the natural history of B.C., the Hope slide is probably just one such natural environmental disaster and it dwarfs any damage that past logging, mining and other resource extraction activities have done at the hands of man. Fortunately for the B.C. environment, environmental

awareness has increased greatly over the past several decades and the requirements for industrial activities such as logging, mining and road-building that could impinge on the environment have tightened considerably. In many cases, the rules and regulations in place for new resource extraction activities like wind energy and run-of-river projects are actually leading to the reversal of human-caused damage from the past through the rehabilitation of abandoned logging roads and the restoration and enhancement of lost ﬁsh and wildlife habitats. But as the Hope slide reminds us all, there is nothing that we humans can do to the environment that can match the devastating power of nature itself. In addition to setting a terrible example for children who may grow up thinking that family pets are disposable commodities, it is also an offence under the Criminal Code to abandon an animal, punishable by a ﬁne of up to $10,000, or up to 18 months in jail. Irresponsible abandonment of rabbits has also led to huge problems in many B.C. communities, such as Victoria, where there is currently a huge public outcry over the cull of more than 2,000 adult and baby bunnies on the University of Victoria campus. So they next time you’re tempted by that cute bunny in the store window, remember the commitment involved. he sight of an adorable baby bunny for sale in the window of a pet store is a sure-fire way to draw a crowd and attract customers. Who can resist those huge brown eyes or those little floppy ears? Too often, though, people let their emotions crowd their judgment and what starts out as a peek into a store window ends up as an impulse purchase. Rabbits, like all pets, require the right kinds of housing, diet, grooming, exercise and stimulation to live a good life. All too frequently people purchase bunnies — either for themselves or for their children — without considering how much time and energy it takes to properly care for a rabbit over its 12-year lifespan. When the novelty of the impulse purchase wears off some guardians take the inhumane step of dumping their rabbit in a local park or field in the mistaken belief that the rabbit can fend for itself. Sadly, this is not the case. Abandoned pet rabbits have none of the natural sensibilities of a wild rabbit and they soon fall victim to predators, disease and injuries. The lives of

Free annual summer fair has Woodstock theme Saturday and Sunday. his year’s Country Fest can’t offer the “free love” of the late 1960s, but there will be something offered free when the Woodstock-themed event takes place July 24-25 at the Albion Fairgrounds. It’s called free admission. The theme is “Woodstock Amongst the Livestock” and for just the cost getting there and a $2 parking fee, the Department of Canadian Heritage Stage will be jampacked with tribute artists. Credence Clearwater Revival (Willie and the Poor Boys), The Who (Generation Who), Jimi Hendrix (Midnight Lightning), Neil Young (Live Rust) and Janis Joplin (Tracy Bell) plus an additional three bands (March Hare, Newhouse & Void Space 2) will play a selection of the those memorable songs. Watch out for local theatrical group the Millennium Players. They will be roving the grounds in groups, dressed in hippie attire, and they do actually believe that they are at Woodstock. For kids, the entertainment includes circus performer Sand Northrup and Mr. Bubbles on Saturday. On Sunday it’s the Super Weirdo Show and Mike Battie. And the free doesn’t stop at Woodstock-related

entertainment. Also on stage, Country Fest will feature and celebrate four more countries in its continuation of the 2009 production of Dancing Around the World, in which 10 countries danced their hearts away. It can get pretty hot at the annual Country Fest, but now there is a fun way to cool down. For the first time at Country Fest, you will be able to watch a talented group of young skaters perform. Country Fest is proud to have the local Balabardin Skating Group taking part this year. They will be performing all weekend long while the fair is on, offering a variety of performances that highlight the glamorous sport of figure skating. The Balabardin skaters and coaches are local talent, located right here in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. “They are a group of young girls and boys who have dedicated a great deal of time and training to the sport of figure skating,” said a news release. “What a great opportunity to check out future Canadian talent. It is also a great time to inquire about how your own son or daughter may strive to be future Canadian figure skaters.” There will be information and registration available. The Balabardin Skating Group will also be having a dress and skate sale in order to help outfit your future skater. On the non-agricultural scene they are featuring a Red Hatters Tea on Saturday, a heritage display with Pitt Meadows Museum offering hands-on heritage activities. This display is to celebrate 100 years of B.C. Association of Agricultural Fairs and Exhibitions. New this year is the Seniors Lifestyle Fair with more than 50 services for seniors, a buskers stage, and Dr. Art Hister will be there on Sunday to answer all your questions. For the teens they have a Trial Stars Bike Show, Go Cart Race Track, Mini Golf and, of course, what’s a fair without West Coast Amusements, El Paso Train Ride and Jungle Jac’s Inﬂatables. It’s natural for people to wonder if memory issues are an early sign of Alzheimer’s, says Katherine Guildbride, regional support and education coordinator for the non-proﬁt Alzheimer Society of B.C. But there is a big difference between normal aging and the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and related dementias, she adds. “Approximately 40 percent of people over the age of 65 experience some form of memory loss,” she explains.

On Deck Royals win four, prepare for last regular game The Ridge Meadows Royals Midget AAA team won their last four games beating the Cloverdale Spurs on Wednesday, the Chilliwack Cougars on Thursday and then sweeping a two-game series against the Vancouver Mounties. They beat the Cloverdale Spurs 2-0 on Wednesday and then beat the Chilliwack Cougars 6-4. On the weekend, the Royals played a double-header against the Vancouver Mounties winning 9-5 and 5-3 over the league’s top team. With only one league game remaining, the Royals are in third place in the league with a 28-11 record. They play the Chilliwack Cougars in their last game of the season at the Albion Sports Complex on Wednesday night. Game time is set for 7 p.m. This will be last game in the regular season before provincials – scheduled for the August long weekend in Kamloops.

Burrards down Vic Shamrocks

The Maple Ridge Burrards beat the Victoria Shamrocks 10-7 on Sunday night at Planet Ice. With one game to go in regular Western Lacrosse Association action, the Burrards are tied for third place with the Coquitlam Adanacs behind New .

The season came to an end for the Ridge Meadows Bantam Girl Burrards this past Sunday when they won the bronze medal at the provincial championships in Port Moody. The Burrards drew Coquitlam in their ﬁrst game, which turned into a physical match getting the Burrards into penalty trouble and costing them in a 4-2 loss. The next day in a very hot arena the Burrards had to play two games within three hours. They started with Nanaimo and had an effective powerplay, which helped them to a 16-0 win. Next up was Burnaby, a team that the Burrards had not beaten this year. They got a quick ﬁrst goal and never trailed. Burnaby only got on the scoreboard in the last seconds of the game with the result being a 4-1 win for the Burrards. This guaranteed a spot in the medal round – what still needed to be decided was the colour of the medal. Finishing second in round robin play, the Burrards drew Coquitlam again. The result was the same as the previous game with a sloppy 5-1 loss to Coquitlam.
