Date set to see the Stanley Cup
EVENTS ❚ Fists of fury
July 18 is the date to see our hometown hero and to touch the legendary hockey trophy. Hurricanes. In December of 2004 Andrew was asked to join the roster of Canada’s team for the World Junior Championship. The line-up included Sidney Crosby, Dion Phaneuf and a couple of players that Andrew would eventually play with in Chicago, Brent Seabrook and Colin Fraser. That year marked one of the most talented line-ups due to the NHL lockout and Andrew had the opportunity to play against Russian phenom Alexander Ovechkin. In early January, 2005 Andrew proudly displayed a Gold Medal to family and friends. On 2005, Andrew Ladd was honoured at the annual Meadowridge Rotary Cub Sports banquet and named a ‘Home Town Hero’ along with another local hockey player, Brandon Yip. In November of 2005 Andrew was called up from Carolina’s farm team, The Lowell Loch Monsters and by the time the season had ended he and his teammates were hoisting the Stanley Cup. Pratt unreformed by jail
A
s Darnell Darcy Pratt awaits word of his fate from the National Parole Board, his parole documents reveal a portrait of a convicted killer unreformed and not rehabilitated. Pratt, 21, was granted statutory release two weeks ago after serving two-thirds of a six-year manslaughter sentence in the 2005 death of Maple Ridge gas attendant Grant De Patie — dragged seven kilometres to his death after trying to stop Pratt from driving away in a stolen car without paying for $12 worth of gas. Pratt went on the lam a day after he was released, failing to return to his Kamloops halfway house. He was arrested the next day. Despite saying he wants to live a more “balanced lifestyle,” Pratt bailed out of a national substance-abuse program while incarcerated.
His attitude toward the program was negative and his efforts in completing homework was minimal, parole documents say. During the program’s first 16 sessions, Pratt missed three sessions, was late for another three and was suspended Jan. 25, six weeks into the program. “You reportedly said that you did not want to attend the program any more because your statutory-release date was approaching and you would be ‘getting out’ regardless if you completed the program or not,” says the report, which also notes Pratt admitted to drinking alcohol almost every day in the months leading up to the gas and dash incident. The report says Pratt, described as “periodically uncooperative” with his case-management team, was charged with verbal abuse, placed in segregation due to
a fight and was believed to have been drunk with other inmates and to have used drugs while in prison. As recently as March 20, Pratt refused a urine test. Most federal prisoners are eligible for statutory release, which allows prisoners to serve the remaining one-
“You reportedly said that you did not want to attend the program any more because your statutory-release date was approaching.” Report third of their sentence in the community. But the documents reveal the board’s wariness about putting Pratt into the community, saying he presents a moderate risk for general and violent reoffending, especially since he didn’t have a job and few community supports in
place. The report notes Pratt was still young and didn’t have a serious criminal record before his manslaughter charge. It took into account his “unstable” and “dysfunctional” upbringing, during which he was exposed to domestic violence and drug use. Pratt, raised by a meth-addicted single mom, has been in and out of government care since he was 12. Still, the board found Pratt made little effort to address his risk factors while in prison. “There is a continuum of violence from fighting, drinking and driving at a young age, to the senseless violence of the index offence, to incidents of violence during your current sentence,” says the report. The board has 90 days to decide whether to revoke Pratt’s statutory release or to release him into the community.

Police Beat Two assaults on Canada Day
Police are investigating two assaults that happened on Canada Day. The first assault occurred at 12:45 p.m. in the 22000 block of Cliff Avenue. A 38-year-old man was out walking his dog when he was attacked by a female who hit him several times before the man, who has a medical disability, was able to fend the woman off. The female suspect is described as an aboriginal woman with a round, pudgy face, between 5’9 and 5’11 and weighing 170 or more pounds with shoulder length dark brown hair with bleach streams through it. She was wearing a black sleeveless t-shirt, and torn blue jeans. The second assault occurred around 10:30 p.m. in front of an apartment complex in the 22400 block of 121 Avenue in Maple Ridge. The male victim was approaching the complex when he was pepper sprayed by another man who then ran off. The suspect is described as a white male in his 20s, 6’2 tall, with a shaved head. He was wearing a white and black hooded sweater, and had a black backpack on. The suspect was accompanied by a white, heavyset female with dark hair in a ponytail.
Man flees scene
A 19-year-old Maple Ridge man has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of a collision after he drove into the Dollarama store in the Westgate Mall on July 1. Several people witnessed the collision. The witnesses provided the suspect’s licence plate to police.

so this brash rip-off took them by surprise. One resident had seen “two scrubby characters” early Saturday morning in front of the 64-unit complex, Christopherson said, but hadn’t realized at the time what was happening. Christopherson has been calling around local scrap metal shops to see if the sign – which he estimated weighs about 50 pounds – has surfaced, but a couple places said they would have called the RCMP if something like that showed up. “This sign is quite conspicuous – what scrapyard will take it?” Christopherson said.
It appears the thieves used a pry bar to pull the sign off, he said, judging from the markings on the brick wall. Ironically, Christopherson and another resident had tried to pry the sign off a few weeks ago checking to see how securely it was attached, and they came to the conclusion it would be difficult to pull off. Now all that’s left is the outline of the sign on the bricks. If anyone has information about the theft or see the Regency Court sign, contact the RCMP at 463-6251 or leave an anonymous tip at 1800-222-TIPS (8477) and cite file #14988.

❚ News Accidents
Float plane flips in Pitt Lake A float plane that crashed into Pitt Lake on Saturday had its landing gear down causing it to flip over on landing, according to the Transportation Safety Board. The pilot, who had taken off from the Pitt Meadows Airport, was treated at Royal Columbian Hospital but was released shortly. The cause of the crash appeared to be the landing gear that were in the down position and not a
mechanical problem with the plane. “There’s no information to say it was a malfunction in the system,” said Bill Yearwood, regional manager of accident investigation with the federal Transportation Safety Board. Yearwood added while he didn’t think there was any malfunction in the float plane’s gears, he also couldn’t say why the gears were down.
The pilot was flying a Canadian-built amphibious version of a Found Bush Hawk-XP plane. According to the Coquitlam RCMP spokesperson Bert Paquet, the pilot was making a routine landing on the lake’s surface around 3 p.m. on Saturday when the plane flipped. Passersby who saw the crash came to help rescue the pilot. With files from Canwest News.
An RCMP officer and an auxiliary officer were injured Sunday when an Oldsmobile slammed into a police cruiser on Dewdney Trunk Road near 222 Street. The two law enforcement officers were taken to Ridge Meadows Hospital and the driver of the Oldsmobile was
taken to Royal Columbian Hospital with chest injuries. Police had been taking a prisoner to the Coquitlam detachment as part of a drunk driving investigation. Ridge Meadows RCMP has been forced to take prisoners to Coquitlam because of renovations at the cells in
Maple Ridge. The collision occurred at 2:54 a.m. Police took a blood sample from the driver of the Oldsmobile to determine if he was impaired but the results aren’t in yet. No charges have yet been laid.

Council fears offloading by Amy Steele asteele@mrtimes.com

aple Ridge council is worried that the province will offload responsibility for two diking districts to the municipality when the dikes are currently not up to provincial standards and could be a huge financial liability. Council voted to ask the province to conduct a full assessment of the dikes, pump stations and other assets of the diking districts. Council also voted to have staff consult with other municipalities that could be affected by downloading of responsibility of diking districts so the municipalities could have a united voice in negotiations with the province. The two diking districts are located between 232 Street and 240 Street adjacent to Lougheed Highway and they’re in the Fraser River floodplain. Property owners within the areas have a diking district levy included on their tax bill to cover the cost of maintaining the dikes. The 2.6 kilometre Albion dike protects 80 hectares of industrial, commercial, residential and park land. A staff reported estimated
it would cost $6.95 million to upgrade the dike to the current provincial standard, which would involve extending the dike east to 240 Street and raising it one metre. Part of the 0.3 kilometre dike within the Maple Ridge Road 13 Diking District also needs to

be raised one metre and a pump station that was built 50 years ago needs to be replaced. Before council voted on the issue, chief administrative officer Jim Rule told council taking over responsibility for the diking districts could involve major liability for the district. “It could be millions of dollars and from our perspective we’re just not prepared to accept that,” said Rule. “There’s so many unknowns.” It was a point all of council agreed with. “I think we need to try and impress upon them that we shouldn’t be taking it over
Stolen trailer recovered
Police arrested two wellknown criminals and found a stolen travel trailer on June 30. At 1 p.m. plainclothes police officers noticed a 52-year-old man, who they knew had an outstanding warrant, on a property in the 22600 block of Selkirk Avenue in Maple Ridge. Police also spoke to a 23year-old woman who was also present. The female left the area, and police then located pieces of stolen mail the female had allegedly left behind. She returned a short time later, and she was arrested in relation to the stolen mail. Police found a travel trailer on the property and they discovered it had been stolen from Langley in 2008. It has been returned to its owner. Ridge Meadows RCMP is investigating a break in at a residence under construction in the 24100 block of 104 Avenue in Maple Ridge. The break in occurred sometime between the night of June 30 and early morning hours of July 1. Vandals turned on the water inside the house and left. The water flooded the home, causing extensive damage. Anyone with information is asked to call police. ◗ A 21-year-old Port Coquitlam man was given a 24-hour driving suspension and had his van towed on July 2. The man was seen driving erratically on 216
Street near Dewdney Trunk Road in Maple Ridge. When a police officer pulled the van over he noted the man’s eyes were red and there was a strong odour of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Police seized a small quantity of marijuana, along with items that could be used for criminal activity.
until they’re at least up to provincial standards and that would be the key to the whole thing,” said Councillor Mike Morden. Councillor Al Hogarth wanted to know how much insurance premiums would have to go up to cover the liability. “If they want to pass over an insufficient system to us that’s not appropriate,” he said. Meanwhile, Councillor Cheryl Ashlie wanted to ensure administrative costs were covered if the district took over responsibility for the dikes.
REGISTER NOW FOR
Councillor Linda King suggested the district ask for an extension on its decision. “This is a flat out download and we need to fend it off as long as possible,” she said. Councillor Craig Speirs said “philosophically it’s got to come down to user pay.” “How you administer that is difficult to look at,” he said. “There’s a community benefit to keeping those feet dry. There’s a place for general revenue but there’s also a place for user pay.... We don’t have a choice we’re going to be taking it on and we have to negotiate the best deal we can.”

Formosa wants property split
P
itt Meadows council will consider whether an application to subdivide a blueberry farm, which has already been split in two by Golden Ears Way, into two official lots will be forwarded to the Agricultural Land Commission. When the Golden Ears Bridge was built, the Golden Ears Way leading to the bridge was built through Formosa Nursery and GAIA Natural Investments cutting it into two pieces – a fiveacre parcel to the south and a 37-acre parcel to the north. The owners of the property have asked the city to forward their application to the Agricultural Land Commission, and this is supported by city staff, according to a report going to council in committee today. The farm, located on 203
Street at the border of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, has a nursery and organic blueberry bushes on it. Subdivision of any property in the agricultural land reserve needs to be approved by the Agricultural Land Commission. The Pitt Meadows Official Community Plan doesn’t support subdivision of agricultural land, however, the OCP doesn’t take into consideration lots that are divided by a road. A staff report to Pitt Meadows council states that, due to
the “unique nature of this case, subdividing the two portions of the property is warranted.” About a year ago, council approved an amendment to its land use bylaw that would allow the subdivision of “fragmented lots” as long as they are serviced, result from the construction of a rural or urban arterial road and the ALC approves it. Ting Wu, who owns the farm along with his wife, said because the property is already cut into two pieces, it should be separated into two lots.

Increase in bridge tolls slaps users
TransLink sure has some strange logic. When it comes to the Golden Ears Bridge, there aren’t as many drivers using it as TransLink had originally projected. So last week it announced it was jacking up the tolls. Huh? According to a Vancouver Sun article in early June, about 22,300 vehicles are now crossing the bridge daily, down from the 29,400 vehicles per day that were projected in 2004 to use the crossing. In that same article, TransLink spokesman Ken Hardie said that one option might possibly be to reduce tolls and market the bridge in a different fashion, but he stressed that was only if the numbers were stagnant. Weeks later, the tolls have now gone up. Tolls for most passenger vehicles, vans, SUVs, trucks and taxis will increase by five cents. Tolls for light duty commercial vehicles with fewer than five axles, cars towing a trailer, school buses, motorhomes and intercity buses or coaches will increase by 10 cents. For articulated trucks or tractor-trailers the increase will be 10 cents for registered vehicles and 15 cents for unregistered vehicles. Unregistered motorcyclists will pay another five cents but registered motorcyclists will pay the same. When discussing in the Sun article the reason why the numbers weren’t nearly as high as originally projected, TransLink blamed the economic downturn, lessthan-expected residential and industrial development in neighbourhoods around the bridge, and more transit riders — on both buses and the West Coast Express. But how can you blame the economic downturn and then raise the tolls at a time when people will also have to deal with the higher carbon tax and the HST? “It won’t be a huge imposition on anybody but it’s helping us generate the cash we need to pay for the bridge,” said Hardie. Oh, well, that makes us feel better to know that Hardie doesn’t think it will be a “huge imposition.” Tell that to drivers. Other commuters are not thrilled after the fees for parking at local West Coast Express stations went up again. We thought TransLink was trying to encourage people to use the service. All these extra fees and taxes make it that much harder for the public. They all add up (and from the sounds of what Hardie said, expect more “inflationary” increases in tolls down the proverbial road). It just gives drivers another reason to not use the bridge. We hope that won’t happen because if fewer drivers use the bridge, taxpayers are still on the hook to pay the private company that built the thing. ■ Your View Last week’s question Do you support security cameras on school grounds? 86.49%

gunshots as CSIS agents fought with Chinese agents trying to smuggle lead-laden toys into the country). Anyway, if you look more closely, you can see that Dziekanski committed suicide. First, he hit himself over the head with that chair he was brandishing. He did that several times. When that didn’t work, he stapled himself in the heart. That’s when he uttered the scream that can be heard on the video — you’d scream too if those sharp little staples were burrowing their way into one of your vital organs. At that point the police officers tasered him a single time. It is obvious they were not trying to kill him; they were trying to prevent him from committing suicide. They were trying to save his life. Anyone with any sense of reality can see that’s what happened. Obviously, the folks at Taser International looked more closely at this video than did the countless people worldwide who mistakenly thought they were looking at a man dying from multiple hits from a Taser. While both the B.C. government and the RCMP have endorsed Braidwood’s recommendations and restricted how and when the weapon can be used, Taser International isn’t buying it. The company has a long record of standing up for its weapons in court and successfully fending off wrongful death lawsuits. So there you have it: Tasers, like cigarettes, do not kill people. ❚ Mailbag Doctor missed
Why gas masks?
Editor:
Editor:
Dr. Hanna Binder died tragically in a car accident one year ago on July 11, which was a huge loss to our community. She was the locally practicing gastroenterologist since the early 1990s. During her memorial, Doctor’s Auersberg and Ervin reflected on how her shoes would be challenging to fill, as she had 1,500 patients under her care. In her own words, “There are a lot of people dying of colon cancer and they
Last Sunday, after a pleasant afternoon at Stanley Park with some of my children and my granddaughter, we began the drive back to Maple Ridge. Going east along Hastings Street at Columbia, I realized too late there were a very large group of people marching down the centre of the road carrying banners, shouting and generally causing traffic disruption. As we got into the thick of the “protesters” my granddaughter wondered what “those guys” who were swearing at the police and yelling were doing, and why did they cover their faces? You have to wonder why, if one was planning on “peacefully protesting,” they would bring a gas mask along with them? If you listened to what they were saying it was “F*** the police” over and over again. While I wholeheartedly support the right to protest, I do not support the rights of individuals to cause disruptions like they did, threaten and intimidate others who may or may not agree with them and try to threaten and intimidate the police. Sometimes you have to actually watch and listen to what is going on before you cry about your rights being trampled. Deborah Plett Maple Ridge
shouldn’t be dying because it is preventable. I want that message to get to people.” She was a highly regarded physician, and a great friend to me. Before choosing medicine, Hanna was very interested in archeology, but a potential of lack of employment made her change her decision and she chose medicine instead. I used to tease her that finally she became what one would consider “a kind of archeologist,” as searching for something when performing a colonoscopy is similar to what archeologists do.

July 11 will be the one-year anniversary of the death of my mother, Dr. Hanna Binder. peace and serenity. To share and keep memories of her alive I have also set up a website. Directions to the bench on the dikes can also be found on the website: memorialwebsites. legacy.com/ hannabinder/ Homepage.aspx. Thank you to the doctors at Ridge Meadows Hospital for remembering her work by placing her picture on the recognition wall in the doctor’s lounge. My mother was and still is an inspiration to me. Summer nights to get hotter with area visits
The Maple Ridge Fire Department has announced another summer of the Hot Summer Nights program. On Thursday evenings throughout the summer, you will find fire trucks visiting both preannounced locations and neighbourhoods at random after 6:30 p.m. starting on July 8. Most often the public sees fire crews when they are busy at an emergency scene; thus they are unapproachable. This program allows the public to see its fire department in a different light and interact with the firefighters. People will be able to:
Ask the crew questions; seek advice on summer safety and fire safety in general. Check out the fire trucks and equipment. Try some “hands-on” activities. Have some fun...get wet if they so choose. Learn something. Look for firefighters on Hot Summer Nights throughout July and August - maybe in your neighbourhood. Attendance is contingent on not being involved in any emergency incidents. Pouring rain that keeps crowds away will also cause firefighters to postpone visits, but they will try to double up the following week. In the event

eggae musician Jawara McIntosh was only seven years old when his legendary father, Peter McIntosh of The Wailers, was murdered. McIntosh describes it as “the most tragic experience in my life” but he’s discovered joy out of pain - the joy of reggae and celebrating his father’s legacy. He even calls himself Tosh
1 as a tribute. “It was a hurtful experience when I was young but I’ve grown to accept it and I’ve grown to be grateful that I still have his music to tune into because some people don’t even have that when they lose a family member. I could bring my father back to life any time I want. All I got to do is groove with him,” said McIntosh. “I know that everything that happens in this world is spiritually motivated. Nothing just happens out of

There’s something happening behind the veil of the physical realm and that’s what my father was trying to get people in tune to.” When asked what it’s been like to be the son of McIntosh, whose group included the equally legendary Bob Marley, and the nephew of Bunny Wailer, McIntosh said when he was young he never thought about that way. “My dad was just my dad. and understand my father’s contribution and not only my father but the Wailers in general their contribution to music and it just inspires me. I’m really not intimidated. It inspires me to do great things and it inspires me to do what I do and it actually inspires me to overcome fear. The music to me is top notch. There’s nothing else here like it. It’s definitely in a class by itself and it’s something I’m proud to represent,” said McIntosh. His music is influenced by hip hop and dancehall reggae. “I’m very openminded. I listen to all different genres of music and of course reggae is the foundation,” said McIntosh. “I love the heartbeat rhythm, the one drop rhythm. I love the consciousness and the cultural songs. I love the Afrocentricity because a lot of that is lacking in Western society. It’s not a white or black thing. It’s an African thing. At the end of the day we’re all African and we gotta know our roots and we gotta respect our roots and we gotta glorify our roots and that’s what reggae tries to bring to the forefront and I really appreciate and love that about the music.” McIntosh said predominant messages remain with reggae in 2010.

Inspiration for his music includes his musical legacy and the “the world and the way it is.” “It inspires me, sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a bad way. I’m just a very observant and conscious individual and I think that I’m not a shallow artist. I like to get real deep,” he said. His song subjects include Jawara McIntosh growing up in a and having love for your low-income neighbourhood brethren,” said McIntosh. with “drugs and violence on McIntosh writes his own a day-to-day basis and...how music and perform that of these politicians aren’t really his father’s and the Wailers’. doing anything for the people “I think I bring something but acting like real puppets.” original and unique and when people see me perform See TOSH, Page 15 they really feel me. Free fun and music take place Saturday and Sunday on 224 Street. TOSH, From Page 14 “There are a lot of topics that are just being swept under the rug and they’re really important not just to any one group of people but to humanity in general and if humanity doesn’t pay attention to these things then we’re just going to continue to be the victim of these things,” he said. “I like to talk about how the media just continues to bombard you with the same news over and over again. I mean it’s almost like self-fulfilling prophecy. You turn on the news and every day you see something negative what’s going to happen? It’s going to be negative because everybody is absorbing that into their consciousness. The negativity is self-perpetuating and we need to break that spell. We need to break this spell that these corporations have over us. We need to break that control that these corporations have over us because really we live in a modern day slavery society. Whether you’re rich or you’re poor as long as you use that dollar as currency you’re a slave to that dollar.
That’s just a fact.” McIntosh said his music is about inspiring people to wake up about what’s going on around them. “Knowing all this information about how this world is run and controlled and how it’s corrupt and how the government is corrupt... but still continuing to be docile and just working hard towards that quote unquote brighter future,” he said. “We’ve got to address these issues and we can’t be scared.” McIntosh is the headliner of the July 10 and 11 Maple Ridge Caribbean Festival at Memorial Peace Park. He’ll perform on July 11 from 8 to 9 p.m. The festival begins at 1 p.m. Saturday with Carl’s Soundvibes (DJ extraordinaire), a Vogue Alley Store fashion show with models in Def Fashizzle Clothing, Out of Many, Tropitonics Steel Band, The Firebrand and ending with Los Furios (a ska-reggae band). Sunday begins at noon with Bounty Hunt A (aka Jamaican Pizza Jerk)
Vancouver’s first-ever reggae recording artist. The afternoon continues with Tropical Heat, a steel drum band, Tamasha, an AfroCaribbean dance troupe, a costume parade at 2 p.m., the Abbotsford Caribbean Dance Crew, La Candela (salsa), Maffie and Crew (dancehall, reggae and soca), Phase II Steelband, Natural Flavors, Brazilian Beat Dancers, Carl’s Soudvibes and finally McIntosh. The 10th anniversary festival will include two stages with 10 live bands from the Lower Mainland Caribbean community, 60 to 70 street vendors at a Caribbean style open air market and 8 vendors serving traditional Caribbean food. The festival has a large kids zone with rides and street performers and attracted 18,000 people in 2009. Those in attendance could win a grand prize trip for two to Jamaica at the end of the festival. For more information on the event, including how to buy tickets for the grand prize and a full schedule, go to www. caribbeanfest.ca.

Pair of losses for Burrards
This past weekend proved successful for the 12-member Ridge Meadows X-treme PeeWee C Girls Softball Team. The team went 7-0 at the 2010 Regionals Softball Tournament held at Fleetwood Park in Surrey. For the playoff games, the team was reduced to only nine players; however they came together and played as a team. There were numerous compliments given to the girls and coaches, for their great sportsmanship, determination and team spirit throughout the tournament. Their run differential was 68-16 for the whole weekend. There was great pitching from Ellen Buckely and Chantelle Ulriksen, timely hits from Sydney Langston, Carlie Predinchuk, Jordyn Knowler and Jenna Aalten. They had great infield defence from Kyla Clark, Jenelle Kent, Monica Ornelas and Rossana Zolliker. The outfield was held in check by Kiana Benoit and Amanda Lepitre. This was just the final touch on an X-tremely successful season, as the girls won all their league games and won three firsts and two seconds in various tournaments this year. The team was coached by Marianne Urlicksen and Colin Kent who saw that the team had fun and learned great softball skills.
The Maple Ridge Burrards lost their two games this weekend – losing first on Friday night in Victoria to the Shamrocks and then taking another loss on home turf in a game against the Langley Thunder on Sunday night. Their road trip to Victoria ended in a 14-12 loss despite the fact the Burrards were leading at the end of the second period. Andrew Murphy opened the scoring in the game against the Victoria Shamrocks and then took turns with Randy Daly scoring for the Burrards. Jarrett Davis also pitched in a goal in the first period but their five goals were answered by the Shamrocks seven goals. In the second period, the Burrards scored four times with Peter Tellis scoring twice and Kevin Reid and Curtis Dickson getting a goal apiece. The second period ended 9-8 for the Burrards. Murphy got his third goal of the game early in the third period. Dickson and Davis also scored once each but Victoria dominated the period getting six goals past the Burrards’ goalie and taking the win. The first period of the game against Langley at Planet Ice on Sunday night ended tied 2-2 with Murphy and Tellis scoring for the Burrards. Langley upped the ante in the second period giving the Burrards a run for their money with six goals to Maple Ridge’s two and the period ended 8-4. Despite three power-play goals in the third period - one from Dickson and two from Joel Dalgarno - the game ended 10-7 for Langley. The Burrards play New Westminster in an away game on Thursday night and then are back in their home arena Planet Ice for their Sunday night game against 6:45 p.m.

Neptunes win gold The Haney Neptunes hosted the tournament where their Bantam team took first place. The Haney Neptunes Aquatics Club hosted their annual co-ed Canada Day Water Polo Tournament for Atom 11 & under and Bantam 13 & under at the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre and, in the end, Haney placed fourth in the Atom division and first in the Bantam division. More than 200 kids from across the Lower Mainland – from Ladner and North Vancouver to Abbotsford and Mission – attended the two indoor pools from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., many close and highly-competitive games were played in both the round-robins and knockout round. There were many great performances throughout the long day from many of our local boys and girls – of exceptional note were Haney Neptunes’ Arianne Yeo who was chosen as the Bantam girls’ most valuable player, Aidan Elphick-Minor who was the Bantam boys’ MVP, and Sam Remfry who was chosen Atom boys’ MVP. The team was coached and supervised by recent MRSS graduates Cody Dodds, Matt Torres and head referee Cole Wagner. ■

the provincials after placing first place in the Maple Ridge playoffs. The Army took part in the 2010 West Coast Minor Ball Hockey Association provincial championships, which was hosted by Delta Minor Hockey Association during the week of June 22 through June 27. They were coached by head coach Eric Bliskis, co-coach Jerry Hargrove, assistant Mike Gautreau and assistant Giorgio Moriconi. The team credited the coaches – particularly their head coach – for their “strong vision”which allowed them to make it to the provincial championships.

❚ Community Fundraising
Special Olympians get boost from JYSK The “Be a Fan: Donate, Coach, Compete” campaign returns this month to JYSK retail stores in support of Special Olympics Canada. From July 2 to 31, customers of the Pitt Meadows home furnishing retailer will be invited to make a donation at check-outs at any of its 40 locations in support of the sport movement that offers individuals with an intellectual disability the opportunity to train and compete. “JYSK is proud to be a national sponsor of Special Olympics Canada,” said Lynne Williams, director of advertising at JYSK Canada. “JYSK is a fan of Special Olympics because we too are a fan of values like respect, commitment, generosity and pride. The ‘Be a Fan: Donate, Coach, Compete’ campaign is one other way JYSK invests in our communities since donations will stay in the communities where we live and do business.” “Special Olympics Canada is truly fortunate to have a tremendous partner like JYSK Canada and its enthusiastic team of employees supporting our efforts to
enrich the lives of more than 34,000 Canadians with an intellectual disability,” said Deborah Bright, president and CEO of Special Olympics Canada. “JYSK supports the dream of Special Olympics athletes to succeed both on and off the playing field.” Keep an eye out for Special Olympics athletes who will be in stores coast to coast on Saturday, July 31. JYSK has been a national partner of Special Olympics Canada since 2006, continuing the tradition of sponsoring Special Olympics chapters worldwide when the company was founded in Denmark in 1979. Special Olympics Canada is dedicated to enriching the lives of Canadians with an intellectual disability through sport. It is a national, not-forprofit organization that provides training and competition opportunities to more than 34,000 athletes of all ages and abilities through local sport clubs and benefits from an extensive network of 16,000 volunteers, including 13,000 trained coaches.
