h e C r ow n h a s s t a y e d a n attempted murder charge against Parker Scott Meadows in the shooting of Kenneth Heathorn. Court heard Heathorn suffered a “sucking chest wound” after getting shot in the 11700 block of Darby Street on June 11, 2009. He was in hospital for three
weeks after the shooting but recovered. Heathorn was shot the same day he was released from jail. Heathorn had been acquitted in June of various charges related to a beating and shooting of a 20-year-old man at a house party on Nov. 8, 2008 in Maple Ridge. In his opening statement at Me a d ow s’ t r i a l Crow n p ro s ecutor Peter Benning said two

women drove Heathorn to the hospital after the shooting. One gave a statement identifying Meadows as the shooter. The other woman initially refused to give a statement but recently made a statement and said she didn’t know Meadows and wouldn’t be able to identify him in a photo lineup. Another witness was also expected to implicate Meadows in the shooting.
However, at trial the witnesses didn’t identify Meadows as the shooter. “I cannot speculate about what it was that caused the collective amnesia,” said Benning after the attempted murder charge against Meadows was stayed. Benning said Heathorn never gave a statement implicating anyone in his shooting. Me a d ow s’ d e f e n c e l a w y e r
Deanne Gaffar pointed out that police didn’t find a weapon and didn’t have forensic evidence linking Meadows to the shooting and the one witness who said Meadows was the shooter never saw a gun in his hand. Meadows had been charged with attempted murder, using a restricted or prohibited weapon, aggravated assault and authorized possession of a firearm.
