This was one of several activities to mark the 13th annual Stopping the Sexual Exploitation of Children and Youth Awareness week.

Garibaldi counsellor Suzanne Davies MORE knows first hand that it’s happening PHOTOS around her and to her students.

That’s why she became part of the ONLINE Ridge Meadows Community Action Team that has a mandate to promote awareness and prevention of the sexual exploitation of children and youth.

And that’s why Davies attend a candlelight vigil and parent seminar held in Maple Ridge Wednesday night.

“It’s something I’m quite concerned about and had the opportunity to get involved and have a voice,” she said.

After the candlelight vigil at Memorial Peace Park, the seminar for parents was to raise awareness about how they could protect children from Internet exploitation.

Tips that were shared included keeping one’s computer in a central location in the house, asking questions and being interested in what youth are doing online, and watching out for secretiveness while on the Internet.

The Internet is being used to lure youth to do sexual favours, for example, exposing themselves on webcams, in exchange for food, money, or drugs, Davies said.

As the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district representative on the committee, Davies can advocate to have students educated and informed about the possible dangers of sexual exploitation on the Internet.

“It’s happening to my students here at Garibaldi,” she said, noting that more information about staying safe on the Internet is found at www.safeonlineoutreach.com.

Proposed land sale may pay for arena

It will cost at least an extra $1.7 million to bring the Pitt Meadows Arena to completion, and that money has to come from somewhere.

But where those funds will come from has evoked some heated debate among Pitt Meadows council members.

The essential foundation work has been done on the ice arena on Bonson Road, but in order to finish the work, a lot more money is needed, said parks and

recreation manager Kelly Swift.

“Where we’re at right now…

There really is only one piece of work left to do that has a destructive element to it, and that’s replacing the sewer line under the building,” Swift said.

A new report was presented to council in committee Tuesday, and council had to make a decision on how much work to proceed with now, and how much more money to spend.

Parks and recreation has recommended against installing a bar or kitchen at this time, but call for work such as second-floor

remediation, security shutters, a new exterior snow melt pit, and sound system to be done.

For items still in the ‘necessity’ column, the total would be about $1.406 million, and with items included from the ‘expectation’ column, the final total would be about $1.71 million.

Council was torn on spending more money on the project and how to come up with the funds.

“No one really likes the word borrowing,” said Dean Rear, director of finance. “It has some dirty connotations that go with it.”

“We’re not borrowing the

money,” said Mayor Don MacLean. “The public is borrowing the money, we’re just the bank.”

“I really think we have to look at selling off some land here,” MacLean recommended.

Councillor John Becker suggested surcharging the arena fees to help off-set some of the additional, unexpected costs.

“My personal preference would be to look at the personal costs,” he said.

MacLean agreed: “I’m looking at why the user groups can’t pay a surcharge of a dollar per hour.”

“I really think that if kids want the best facility, there has to be some cost involved,” he added.

Council in committee will recommend that council move forward with a funding process for the work, and look for other potential funding sources for the money.

The original price tag for the arena was $4.85 million for the construction and the design and architectural elements (phase one). In August, the cost increased to $5.3 million. Now even more money is needed to bring it near completion.

Discussion became heated and passionate at Pitt Meadows’ council in committee on Tuesday night when the topic of the Pitt farmers’ market was raised.

Councillors such as Gwen O’Connell and Tracy Miyashita want to give the Haney Farmers’ Market Society some financial help for the project’s first year, but both the mayor and Councillor John Becker do not want to see taxpayer money spent on what Becker called a “commercial venture.”

Following the success of the Osprey Village Farmers’ Market in Pitt Meadows last year, the society is now moving the event up to Spirit Square, but they are looking for some financial help to get the project going.

Eileen Dwillies, one of the market managers from the society spoke to council in committee, and, said there are already 19 people wanting to sell their goods at the market this year, including three youth vendors.

They are looking for a fee for service agreement up to, but not exceeding, $6,890, from Pitt council to help get the relocated project off the ground.

Albion back on agenda Ridge council will look at revised plan on Monday.

Maple Ridge council will have a new version of the Albion plan before them at Monday morning’s workshop.

Maple Ridge council was presented with four options for the Albion Flats by consultant HB Lanarc a month ago, and they asked Maple Ridge staff to rework the second option incorporating elements of some of the others.

The District of Maple Ridge plans to hold an information meeting in the spring to allow Maple Ridge residents to comment on the reworked plan.

A large portion of the land sits in the land reserve, but because of drainage issues it hasn’t been farmed for years.

SmartCentres, a shopping mall developer, owns part of the land.

If the land is ever developed, Maple Ridge will control how development takes place, for example, the form and character, Mayor Ernie Daykin said.

Ditch pondered as Wildwood flood solution

The City of Pitt Meadows has until Nov. 30 to advise Translink of any concerns relating to the construction of the Wildwood Trail.

A few residents of Wildwood Crescent were both concerned and encouraged by what they heard at Pitt Meadows’ council in committee meeting on Tuesday night.

Despite a report by Thurber Engineering, and ISL Engineering stating that construction of the Wildwood Trail has likely not affected drainage behind the homes on the crescent, residents say they are still dealing with excess water that they did not have before the trail was built.

Councillor Gwen O’Connell referenced a part in the ISL report, which stated that “to improve the drainage conditions at the Wildwood Crescent property line, a shallow and continuous relief ditch could be considered to outlet the east.”

The ditch could help the problem, but she does not believe Translink, who contracted the trail to be built, would pay for it, said Kim Grout, director of operations and development services.

“I don’t believe they would because it has to be a condition imposed by the trail,” she said.

Councillor Tracy Miyashita said she would like to see the City explore the option of a ditch. “I have a hard time believing this is just coincidence,” she said.

Councillor Deb Walters, and Doug Bing also supported the idea of a ditch, and Bing said he is concerned TransLink is getting off the hook to pay for any of it.

The support of the four councillors was encouraging to resident Leslie Colquhoun, who said construction of the trail definitely altered the drainage in her yard and behind her fence.

“I’m very discouraged by a couple of the councillors that continue to say the trail didn’t cause any problems,” she said.

During the meeting, Mayor Don MacLean expressed concern that if the

City pays for any fix in this area, they may be opening themselves up to similar issues in other areas.

“Maybe we have a thing called global warming and that is a fact,” he said.

“Yes, we are seeing different issues, and, yes, we are a floodplain,” he added.

Miyashita said she understood the mayor’s concerns about this case being precedent setting. “But we’re in the business of making our community pleasant for our residents,” she said.

MacLean suggested that residents could hire a contractor through the City, “and over four, five years it will be such a small amount they could pay for it,” he

said.

“That infuriated me,” said Colquhoun.

“The problem was not caused by the residents here and to even suggest we should pay to fix it,” she added.

Neighbour Mike Stark, who had a French drain installed by TransLink to help the water issue on his property, agreed with Colquhoun.

“Are you kidding me?” he said. “Come on, what kind of comment was that?

[MacLean] still doesn’t think there’s a problem down here,” he said. “He hasn’t put a pair of rubber boots on and come down here.”

“I thought Don MacLean was quite inflammatory with the things he said [Tuesday] night,” said Colquhoun.

There was a moment of confusion when a few of the residents at the meeting thought MacLean might have been alluding to the fact that Stark was making the issue worse by getting all the neighbours involved, but MacLean said that is not what he meant.

“I was just talking about cost,” he said. “$30,000 was spent by TransLink on Mike’s problem,” he added, pointing out that he was just mentioning some of the figures involved.

When this issue first came to light, Stark said he was the one who acted as a kind of ‘spokesperson’ for the residents, but now more want their voices heard.

“I was their voice and the City was OK with that because they didn’t want to talk to 20 people,” he said.

The report on the trail was received by council in committee, but staff will be directed to find out what the cost of the ditch would be in that area, and that will be decided upon at a future meeting.

Now Sturcz is waiting to see whether an excavation launched Wednesday of his former townhouse at 4842 Rupert St. will prove his nightmares were real.

“I was a witness,” Sturcz recalled, alleging that his now-deceased father, Aladar Sturcz, a Hungarian concentration camp survivor, murdered his First Nations mother, Katherine Mary Brown, and hid her body under the family home.

“I witnessed my father bury my mom in the basement when I was five. I helped him mix the cement,” said Sturcz, now 37.

Sturcz has been in the contact with the TIMES over the past six months waiting for the police to start an investigation.

Horrific flashbacks of the alleged incident led Sturcz to contact the Vancouver police department, which launched an investigation into his claims in late 2010.

The VPD eventually concluded that a woman did disappear in 1977 and that her human remains could be in a townhouse on Rupert Street.

The excavation of the townhouse will be done by archeology and forensic science students from SFU. Sturcz said the murder and burial of his mother destroyed his life, driving him to use hard drugs to deal with the trauma.

It’s still our government, not Harper’s Casual references to the Government of Canada as “the Harper government” are all right – as long as everyone realizes that’s not an official designation.

Political self-reference by the governing Conservative Party as “the Harper government” is no problem, either – as long as it’s clearly recognized that the label is being attached in a political context.

Likewise, the term has been used as an underpinning for less flattering political contexts by opposition parties (“political” being the operative word), and they will undoubtedly find new and creative ways to cast aspersions on “the Harper government” – just as the Conservatives and New Democrats found clever ways to malign “the Martin government” and “the Chretien government” before it.

In a more neutral vein, media are prone to take shortcuts, saving valuable space in print or exercising simplicity for the sake of readers and listeners, with references to “the Harper government” or “Stephen Harper’s Conservative government” or “the federal Conservative government,” instead of droning repetition, or unwieldy references to the “Government of Canada led by Prime Minister Stephen Harper,” just as “the Campbell government” has been a common designation for the Government of British Columbia, until “the Christy Clark government” (not to be confused with the former Glen Clark government) takes over.

But use of “Harper Government” on official federal stationery suggests manipulative politicking, if not dangerous arrogance.

Whatever we call it casually, it is officially Canada’s government, not Harper’s. Stephen Harper is the public servant we have entrusted to sit at the head of our government – for now.

With the “in-and-out” scandal a festering black mark on “the Harper government,” and now not one, but two, rulings from the Speaker’s chair on unethical conduct in dealings with Parliament and the people of Canada, the Harper Conservatives could show a little contrition… and maybe a bit more respect for the niceties of democracy.

Recall purpose laughable Every now and then I read something in the local newspaper which is so outrageous that it compels me to write a letter to the editor.

In a couple of recent articles NDP spokesperson Corisa Bell made several incredulous statements, which I could not in good conscience ignore.

While reading the articles I found myself asking “does the NDP and their spokesperson think that the voters of Maple Ridge and Mission are so ignorant and uninformed they could easily hoodwinkand bamboozle us into actually signing

What expectations? Whose expectations?

During the lead up to the Golden Ears Bridge, Translink did a ‘survey’ asking locals about 20 questions.

The very first of those questions was ‘Would you like a toll on the bridge?’

Answer choices were yes or no.

All the rest of the questions on the survey were about types of tolls, billing of tolls, size of tolls, administration of tolls.

When the results of the survey were released, the answer to question one had been conveniently left out of the released results.

The results released therefore painted a picture of users who had embraced the idea of a toll for the Golden Ears Bridge.

The answer to question one was a resounding no.

We, the people, are tired of new tolls, new taxes, and new ways to get more money out of our pockets for less services. Is it any wonder that the traffic is far less than expected?

The NDP and their spokesperson first claimed that they wanted to recall Marc Dalton because the Liberal party brought in the HST. If this is the reason then shouldn’t they have dropped their plans when it was announced that the citizens of British Columbia will vote on a decision to either keep the HST or get rid of it?

After losing their flimsy justification for recalling Mr. Dalton, the NDP and their spokesperson came up with a whopper of a reason to recall Mr. Dalton that is so laughable I had to check if it was April Fool’s Day. The new reason the NDP and their spokesperson is claiming why they want to recall Marc Dalton is because he has not done anything for his riding for the past two years.

Bell asked “Where has he been for the last two years?” Are you laughing as hysterically as I am?

If you were a resident of Maple Ridge or Mission who truly cared about the well-being of the people in our community, you would not have to ask where has Marc Dalton been the last two years, because you would have seen him out in the community helping residents like me who needed an advocate.

I have spoken to many people who called Marc Dalton’s constituency office, spoke to him, and he immediately became their advocate to help solve the problem they were having.

So excuse me if I have a good laugh at the statement by Bell “Where has he been for the last two years?” Answer: Right here Mrs. Bell, helping his constituency.

My question is where have you been before this self-promoting issue came up?

And where are you now?

Why is the name of the person who signed the application to recall Mr. Dalton “Wilfred Murdock McIntyre?” Why the bait and switch? What is the NDP hiding?

Wealth vs. poverty paramount I just wanted to comment on the selection of the NDP federal candidate this past Sunday.

I am delighted that we have such dedicated individuals, both Elizabeth Rosenau and Craig Speirs, who were willing to put themselves forward for this job.

It is good to know that there are still people in this world who care about the poor and needy in our country.

I hope that Craig is successful in his bid for the federal seat, as we need someone who’s not bought off by the corporations of this world.

Corporate tax breaks for the richest in our society when so many of our families are suffering, is unconscionable.

We need to get our priorities straight in this election, and we can do this by bringing back a balanced approach to how our country’s wealth is distributed.

And, we must expose how the Harper “Kingdom” is insidiously dismantling our parliamentary democracy in Canada.

Let’s start by restoring the national housing strategy to help out the many families that can’t afford a decent place to live. Let’s make higher education

Despite reports of possible shots fired, police found no evidence of gun activity in the area of 225 Street and Lougheed Highway earlier this week.

A concerned resident thought he heard “large bangs” from a firearm just after 10 p.m. on Tuesday, and several officers quickly patrolled the area, said RCMP

Cpl. Alanna Dunlop.

While they were looking for any evidence, police received a second call of another loud bang, in the area of Brickwood Park – a short distance away.

This time the police dog joined in the search. Several citizens spoke to police, and police concentrated a search in Brickwood Park, but to no avail.

“Although we cannot confirm exactly what the person making the report heard, we did not locate anything that would indicate anyone was injured, or that a firearm had been discharged,” she said.

When she asks residents if they have an emergency kit put together, the standard response is ‘No, it would never happen to us.’

Natural disasters like the Feb. 22 earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand and recent mass flooding in Australia tell otherwise.

ESS, a provincially run program facilitated by the municipality, is activated in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows about once a month. The agency provides short-term assistance to people forced to leave their homes as a result of fire, floods, earthquakes, or other emergencies.

This assistance could include food, lodging, clothing, emotional support, and family reunification.

Immigration consultants hurt by ads A national television commercial warns about fraud associated with immigrating.

One thing is for sure, there are no guarantees when it comes to immigration.

But when Pitt Meadows resident and immigration consultant Roxanne Jessom saw a Canadian and Immigration Canada television advertisement in late Feburary, called Don’t Get Cheated by a Crooked Immigration Consultant, she was very angry.

She felt the ad was directed toward all immigration consultants, certified or not, and said that was unfair to the profession, herself and her certified colleagues.

“There’s lot of fraud out there,” she said.

“I’m not going to say that there’s not, but don’t group us all together.”

Jessom has been working as a certified immigration consultant since 2009 and represents clients from all over the world who are seeking immigration advice.The majority of her work comes from referrals and she said she has a good rapport with her clients.

Regional biennale

Artists being invited to exhibit works in Frsaer Valley galleries

For artists trying to get on their feet and show their work, it’s a difficult process.

The Maple Ridge Art Gallery, The Reach Art Gallery, the Kariton Gallery

in Abbotsford, the Mission Gallery, and hopefully the Langley gallery, are hoping to change all that.

“It’s difficult to connect because we’re kind of in a broad area,” said Barbara Duncan, Maple Ridge Art Gallery curator.

“This is going to be an exhibition where the work is shared,” she said.

Any visual artist, working in mediums such as painting, sculpture, and fine arts, can apply to have their work shown, and it will be open to residents and art lovers

across the Lower Mainland.

The show will be called the Fraser Valley Regional Biennale, an inaugural event.

“It creates a kind of energy throughout the Fraser Valley,” said Duncan.

The exhibition will open on June 24 and run until July

30, while the deadline for all submissions is April 29.

The Maple Ridge Art Gallery is holding an information session Monday for interested artists to learn about the exhibition.

Jailhouse Rock rocks the Ridge

The dance theatre show, Jailhouse Rock, based on the songs of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll incorporates a variety of modern art forms, such as the breakdancing jail scene pictured on the left.

In a play described as ‘Cirque du Soleil meets Fame, meets Elvis,’ the story of Johnny B. Goode, told through the King’s music, will be on stage for one night only in Maple Ridge.

The day Elvis died is something many people remember, whether they were a fan or not.

For the fans of the King of Rock ’n’ Roll, it was the end of an era. His memory has been kept alive through tributes and festivals, and now a dance theatre show, called Jailhouse Rock, dedicated to his songs is coming to Maple Ridge this Saturday.

“Instead of someone coming out and watching an Elvis impersonator, he is actually part of the show,” said producer Tony Hutchcroft.

The story follows Johnny B. Goode, as he is released from jail, travels to Las Vegas, where he lives it up, Viva Las Vegas style, and then falls in love with a beautiful girl.

However, he is tempted by another, and he Can’t Help Falling in Love with both women.

“Growing up I never had an interest in Elvis,” he said. However, after giving a CD he bought his father a listen one day, he said he fell in love with it and later came second in an Elvis look-alike and song contest in Spokane, Washington, where he is hails from.

“I had to write Love Me Tender on my hand,” he laughed.

Since finding his new calling, Klein has performed all across Canada and the U.S., and is excited to be part of Jailhouse Rock.

“It’s good to try something new,” he said.

“It’s a lot of action, a lot of excitement, a lot of movement,” he added.

Klein stressed this show doesn’t just apply to Elvis fans. “I call it Cirque du Soleil meets Fame, meets Elvis,” he said.

“I truly believe he was the King of rock ’n’ roll.”

Jailhouse Rock takes place Saturday at the ACT, and the curtain rises at 7:30 p.m.

Pitt Meadows resident Sarah Nelson did a double take when her daughter, Hannah, at eight months, said the word “bush.”

At first, she wasn’t sure if she was just hearing things, but, in hindsight, it was probably an early sign that Hannah was a smart kid.

But his math skills are exceptional, Cathy said, and himself he said he prefers problems when they are laid out in number form.

When teachers didn’t realize that Matthew was gifted, his parents were told he wasn’t motivated at school; when the level of work didn’t meet his level of ability, he’d get bored and would get “more and more frustrated,” said his father Paul.

When he was younger, the first six weeks of school in the fall were often filled with temper tantrums as he tried to adjust to another teacher, his mother Cathy said.

“It was frustrating for us... when we saw the potential he’s got,” she added.

Support is needed for both gifted children, and children with learning disabilities or special needs – it has to be for those who don’t fit into the mainstream learning environment.

“There needs to be the ability to deal with kids at both ends of the spectrum,” Paul said.

When they came across barriers to getting Matthew the extra support her needed for his giftedness, Cathy said she and her husband sometimes wondered whether they were right about Matthew – “we were starting to doubt ourselves,” she said.

The Gifted Children’s Association of B.C. has a Ridge Meadows chapter for parents and their gifted children.

They meet regularly and often have guest speakers.

Success in B.C.s Three skaters from the Maple Ridge Skating Club competed at the 2011 Provincial Pacific StarSkate Championships in southeast B.C. Emily Bator, Dale Kilgour, and Lauren Westhaver all competed for the B.C. Coast Region at the StarSkate Championships.

Bator received a gold medal in junior silver ladies, Kilgour placed first in the bronze interpretive category, and Westhaver came ninth in the province in the junior bronze 13 and over category.

Boys win final The Pitt United U17 soccer team won the Alouette District final.

When they defeated the Golden Ears Mustangs on March 6 at Pitt Meadows Secondary, the Pitt Meadows United boys soccer team carved a spot in the Conference Cup final.

The team defeated Mission 5-3 on Feb. 20, and then faced the Mustangs last weekend.

Despite being down 1-0 at halftime, the Pitt boys were able to come back in the second half.

Only team to make the finals A local team will be playing in the Conference Cup final this weekend.

Mission, to make it to the final, and they will be taking on the Aldergrove Vipers at Town Centre (Percy Perry Stadium, located at 1299 Pinetree Way) in Coquitlam.

They play on the Mobilio turf field, starting at 1 p.m.

The team consists of players from Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Samuel Robertson Technical, and Westview Secondaries.

After the Conference Cup, they will then be taking on the Coastal Cup challenge starting April 2. Everyone is welcome to come out and cheer them on.

The Pitt Meadows Soccer Club United U15 boys silver division one team has a lot to celebrate this year.

They won first place for the District Cup, they came in first for their regular season, and are now heading to the Conference Cup final Saturday.

Ridge succeeds in Alberni

In late February, the Maple Ridge Secondary badminton team travelled to the island to compete.

Boys and girls travelled to Port Alberni to show their skills on the badminton court, and the MRSS team finished the Port Alberni Junior Invitational with three triple-crown winners – Laura Tacon, U19, Vinnu Aniyan, U19, and Alison Lim, U16.

In the U14 division, Brian Choi came

first in the boys’ singles B event, and in the girls’ singles, Eliza Lim came first in the A event, Julie Stanley came second in the C event, and Laura Escueta came second in the B event.

For the boys’ doubles, Brian Choi and Pavan Toor placed first in the B event, and Adam Zuber-Nizol and Jesse Ferguson swiped a first in the C event.
