One of Maple Ridge’s hometown heroes is now immortalized, after a unique piece of art was unveiled at Planet Ice Maple Ridge Wednesday.

Boston Bruins president, Hockey Hall of Fame inductee, and former Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey player Cam Neely appeared visibly impressed after he helped pull away a curtain covering a life-sized wood carving in his image.

The carving hugs the grandstands, and faces the entrance of the rink at Planet Ice that bears his name.

Samantha Boutet doesn’t believe parents have given informed consent when they let children attend a school with wireless technology.

The Maple Ridge mother of two withdrew her daughters from Laity View Elementary last fall, concerned about their exposure to the constant pulsating radiation from the school’s wireless router, and its effects on her kids’ nervous and cellular systems.

Boutet told the local trustees Wednesday that children are being “radiated” without the informed consent of parents.

Una St. Clair with Citizens for Safe Technology, who also attended the board meeting, said there is Michael Sather a big gap in the science around wireless Ridge Meadows MLA networks.

While St. Clair is not opposed to technology moving ahead, she wants it to be used in a safe manner.

Boutet asked the board of education to give an alternative to parents, for example, to have one elementary and one secondary school without wireless Internet.

She pointed out that in many central European countries such as Switzerland, Germany, and France, municipal and regional governments are banning wireless in schools and day cares.

With two generators almost 90 years old, and the third one 60 years old, it’s time for some upgrades in order to provide reliable electricity for future generations, said Boyd Mason, the Ruskin Dam and Powerhouse upgrade project manager.

As a bonus, the powerhouse will look better, and the road at the top of the dam will be safer for walkers and drivers.

“Esthetically, it will be a much nicer picture than right now,” Mason said.

BC Hydro has applied to the B.C. Utilities Commission to raise its rates which would help pay for an upgrade of about $800-million to the Ruskin Dam and Powerhouse, part of a larger $6-billion upgrade to BC Hydro facilities across the province.

The facility will be brought up to modern safety standards and will be seismically upgraded.

Both an independent study and internal reviews have concluded that the equipment at the Ruskin Dam is in “poor to unsatisfactory condition,” Mason said.

But the upgrades will also result in significant rate hikes for BC Hydro customers.

BC Hydro calls its new $6-billion capital plan a “regeneration” of its system, one that the Crown corporation anticipates will cost the average consumer 32 per cent more in rate increases over the next three years, and 50 per cent over the next five years.

BC Hydro CEO Dave Cobb said the increase is a necessary hit on consumers’ utility bills, given the lack of reinvestment in its system since the mid1990s.

“Unfortunately to some

It’s estimated that the demand for electricity will increase by 40 per cent over the next 20 years in the province.

With no spare parts on the market, it’s expensive to maintain the generators at the Ruskin dam, Mason said.

“We have reliability issues now,” Mason said, and personnel are doing “significant repairs” which add to the operating costs of the facility.

While the output of the generators, which is a maximum 105,000 kilowatts, won’t increase significantly, the reliability and efficiency of the facility will improve.

Not only is it hard to get spare parts for the generators, the technology used is so old new workers coming straight from school don’t know how to use it and need costly training.

Currently the switch yard, which connects the generators to the electrical grid, is on top of the powerhouse at the moment, a “unique” design, Mason said, and

with the upgrades, it will be moved off the building and next to the dam.

The spillways and gates of the dam itself will be rebuilt and there will be five gates as opposed to the seven that currently exist.

The powerhouse control room is also from the 1930s, although it has had some upgrades, there are still a lot of old dials and other equipment.

Some equipment is so delicate, that personnel have to be careful not to bump it in case it messes up the systems.

Construction is expected to start in 2012. Ordering new turbines takes a long time, and Mason expects new parts will start arriving at the end of 2014.

Chris O’Riley, Hydro’s executive vice-president for power generation, said the Ruskin upgrade will only result in a marginal increase in its 105-megawatts, but it’s a necessary improvement given its age.

“What we’re going to get is to be able to rely on it for the next 80 years,” he said.

Wrecking ball aimed at historical Albion Hall

The community space has “outlived its day,” according to the Ridge historical society’s president.

The Albion Hall will soon be knocked down, but its value will go into a trust for a future facility.

The Albion Community Club is donating the hall to the District of Maple Ridge, but parks and leisure services has assessed the building and because of a lengthy list of issues, it can’t be saved, according to Kelly Swift, general manager of community development and parks and recreation.

“We aren’t able to operate it in its current condition,” she said.

The assessed value of the building is $316,500, and after the cost of demolition is taken off that amount, the money will be held for a future facility.

The agreement with the Albion Community Club is to use the money in the future for a community gathering place in Albion, and Swift said parks and leisure services is looking for the right opportunity to build such a facility.

Maple Ridge Councillor Craig Speirs said he doesn’t want the Albion Hall knocked down until

something else is built for community use.

“It makes me incredibly uncomfortable,” Speirs said. “We don’t have a public space available down there.”

Speirs said he believes the Albion Hall is viable, and that council should do its “due diligence” and invest some money in the facility.

“It’s kind of outlived its day,” said Faye Isaac, president of the Maple Ridge Historical Society.

“The area has grown so significantly in the past 10 years. For a community hall to work, it has to be a certain size.”

Isaac said she would, however, like a new building to be ready before the old Albion Hall is knocked down.

The history of the old building and the area should be incorporated into a new facility so new people to the area know about the past, Isaac said.

But keeping and maintaining historical buildings is expensive and is not the mandate of the historical society.

“We don’t collect old buildings,” Isaac said.

Isaac also thinks the location of the hall “very dangerous” and when getting to the hall, users are “taking their life in their own hands.”

Swift pointed out there is space available for rent in the Golden Ears Winter Club and in Planet Ice as well as some buildings at the fairgrounds.

The Albion Hall was opened in 1923.

It was built with volunteer labour, and donations raised from various fundraisers, for example, dances at Whonnock Memorial Hall and the Hammond Theatre, whist drives, sing songs, and social evenings.

At that time, the Boys Entertainment Club had been meeting at a church for boxing, pool, and baseball.

A Girls’ Club was also later formed, adding to the need for a hall to meet at.

The first president of the Albion Hall Club was Frank Zeron, and its construction was largely attributed to S. Baker and Geo. Owen.

Squirrel shooter loses guns

An 81-year-old Pitt resident was trying to scare squirrels away on his property by shooting at them.

On Monday morning police were called to a residence on Hammond Road after receiving reports of shots being fired.

The 81-year-old resident told police he was attempting to scare squirrels off his property by firing at them.

Police seized his three firearms, and are now investigating his authority to possess them, along with possible firearm related charges.

An observant neighbour is credited with helping prevent a possible theft of his neighbour’s belongings, after he heard a loud noise from an adjoining unit in a Dewdney Trunk Road housing unit on Tuesday afternoon.

The neighbour went over and found two men inside the unit who had broken in. The two suspects ran out and the neighbour gave chase and called the police.

The RCMP Lower Mainland District Police Dog Services and the RCMP Traffic Services helicopter, Air One, attended to the scene, but were unable to locate the two men.

Students and staff at Maple Ridge Secondary and across School District 42 were thinking pink on Wednesday.

February 23 marked the fourth annual anti-bullying day in Canada.

Pink Shirt Day, a national anti-bullying campaign, started in 2007 after two boys in Nova Scotia rallied around another student who was bullied for wearing a pink polo shirt.

Pink Shirt Day participants wore pink to symbolize their stand against bullying, and at schools throughout Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, pink was all the rage.

Vice-principal Dylan Watt estimated that as many as 50 per cent of the students at MRSS wore pink to show their support.

“It’s a positive reaction to bullying,” Watt said. “It’s a big issue in schools and we want to point that out.”

Grade 12 student Tanner Guraliuk said while bullying isn’t a big issue at MRSS, it is a problem in everyday life.

“It’s good to have people to stand up for other people,” said Guraliuk, who figures he has worn pink on anti-bullying day the past three years.

Fellow Grade 12 senior Julia Vickers has witnessed bullying in the past.

She said the day sheds light on the issue.

“People stand up for each other and if you see pink, then you know these people are the ones who are going to stick up for someone,” she said.

At Edith McDermott Elementary, a “Pink Day” rally was held with the focus on acceptance, and the school re-ignited its anti-bullying oath, principal Donna Heikkila reported.

The school community also did a flash mob dance to the Bruno Mars’ song Just The Way You Are.

Salish carver and School District 42 full-time cultural worker Quentin Harris is starting a two-year totem pole project at South Lillooet Centre, with a little help from his friends.

In this case, his friends are a group of students from the SD42 Connex program. They helped Harris shave off the top layer of a red cedar tree, donated from the Blue Mountain Woodlot.

According to SD42, the Connex program enrols students whose behaviour is under-controlled or over-controlled. Students whose behaviour is undercontrolled suffer from impulsivity, bullying, intimidation, defiance, or anger management difficulties. A number of Connex students come from an Aboriginal background.

Harris said carving takes time and patience, two important skills to have in the future.

The pole blessing was done about two weeks ago, Harris said, and the theme will be three trees within a tree. Three is an important number in First Nations culture, he said, because it signifies the mother, father, and child.

Police say they are pleased with the public response to sketch.

Police have so far received 22 tips about the identity of a missing woman, whose partial remains were found along a creek, south of the Lougheed Highway, and about 800 metres east of the Ruskin

bridge 16 years ago.

They released a sketch earlier this week after working with the FBI and experts, and out of those 22 tips, so far six of them have been resolved.

The remaining 14 are still being investigated.

“We are very pleased with the public interest and support that we got in the investigation into the identity of Jane Doe,” said RCMP Sgt. Dan Almas of the Missing Women Task Force.

The world is a difficult – and dangerous – place to understand. The more we figure out about this amazing place, the more we discover we have yet to learn.

To confuse the issue still further, the same science that attempts to unravel the manifold mysteries that encompass our earthly existence has provided a vast array of discoveries and inventions to make our lives more comfortable – but at the cost of greater risk.

For instance, science brought us the amazing internal combustion engine.

And the price has included pollution and consequences unimaginable to those who developed the gasoline-powered cars that gave us global atmospheric lead levels hundreds of times normal (with still undetermined health risks), cities enveloped in brown sulfur and nitrous oxides (now implicated in rising incidences of asthma), and huge increases in carbon oxides (fueling possibly catastrophic global climate change).

While some scientists work feverishly to correct errors made by our impulsive rush to transportation efficiency, others have created the communications revolution, which has been building exponentially over the past few decades.

The remarkable rate of increase in communications technology virtually assures that more unintended mistakes are being made, mistakes that, as in the transportation revolution, may not be discovered for decades.

Some people, like a few parents at Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows schools, believe that one of the errors lies in wireless technology and the unknown consequences that “Wi-Fi” and other remote-service communications may have on living organisms – such as ourselves – at the cellular level.

So far, science suggests that such concerns are overblown. But science can only provide probabilities based on known information, and can’t definitively prove anything based on what we don’t know – and the amount we don’t know seems to grow at least as fast as our base of knowledge.

It behooves us to listen patiently – and thoughtfully – to those who express concerns about the unknown.

It would not be the first time that those who are seen as scare-mongers today become recognized as visionary whistle-blowers tomorrow.

My son Adam and I went to the Cam Neely ceremony Wednesday night at Planet Ice for the wood statue unveiling.

I brought my seats from the old Boston Gardens to the rink.

The great part about this story is back in 1999, I had the great fortune of meeting Bobby Orr who signed one of the conjoined seats.

The other seat had a #8 on it and Bobby told me that I had to get Neely to sign it.

I kept my promise to Orr and myself.

Cam came by just before he went on air, and I quickly told him the story.

He took the time to sign the seats and a man named Mike Lascalle graciously took this photo.

Money critical to survival of many non-profit groups Dear editor,

Just got the time to review Tuesday’s paper and saw Bob Groeneveld’s editorial [Spare thought for children, Feb. 22 Opinion, TIMES].

Agencies in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are scrambling to scratch money together to continue running programs, support community development and ensure there is a continuum of service for the children, youth and families of our communities, especially for those that are most vulnerable.

As we “celebrate” our 40th year in the community, Family Education and Support Centre is tallying up the damage done to our agency from the cuts that we experienced in gaming and from several of the provincial ministries that fund our core programs.

We have had to reduce service to the programs that gaming funds, but our doors are still open and we work hard to maintain a continuum of service.

The chipping away of programs is demoralizing, but presents us with the opportunity to come together and let the public know what is going on so that they can talk with their MLAs and MPs and tell them what is important to them.

We certainly have as an agency.

Your thoughts are right on in terms of the kind of leadership we need to make a difference to children and families that need services that would ultimately impact the quality of community we want to see.

Studies have been done and information provided to government and business about the importance of early intervention (birth to six years) with children and families to eventually produce well adjusted, educated and responsible adults who will contribute to society rather than

diminishing its capacity.

Who will listen?

Who will have the vision and the fortitude it takes to invest in vulnerable children and families now, to reap the benefits of an abundant and thriving community and economy?

After 40 years in this profession, I am still waiting but still hopeful!

Dear editor,

I was disappointed to read that the Haney Place Market and Antique Mall will be replaced by Thrifty Foods next year.

Maple Ridge currently has plenty of supermarkets and Save-On-Foods is only one block away from the site in question.

There is only one local store like the antique mall, and it would be a shame to lose such an unique establishment only to gain more of what is already available.

I sincerely hope Ruth Pare, or others, can continue to provide our community with interesting and diverse shopping experiences like the Haney Place Market.

August in the Northern Hemisphere is a time when things ripen before the seasons change and the weather starts cooling.

The trio that makes up the West Coast musical act — Beverley Elliott, Linda Kidder and Rae Armour — named themselves after this hot month as they liked what the name represented, and consider themselves to be in their ‘ripening’ time of life.

“We’re all over, I hate to say it now,” said Elliott, “but 50. I just crossed that line.”

August was formed five years ago, and the trio sing about issues that affect every woman, and even men.

Beverley Elliott, Linda Kidder and Rae Armour of musical trio August don’t just sing ‘brokenhearted love songs.’ Their lyrics touch on issues affecting all women, ranging from weight to credit card debt and menopause.

“It is indeed a concert,” she said, “but it’s very casual, conversational. It’s not only broken-hearted love songs,” she laughed.

August generally attracts women about 40 and up, but Elliott said they often have men in the audience as well.“There’s no men bashing,” she said. “We love men.”

Along with their guitar player, Daryl Jahnke, the women aim to take their audience on a journey of life, love, and friendship.

life,” said Elliott. “You’re gonna laugh, and you’re probably gonna cry if your heart is open.”

She said they know how hard it is to get out of the house sometimes, especially on a cold night in February after a hard day at work, but they love meeting people and hearing how their music affected them after the show.

“People often have tears in their eyes,” said Elliott.

“When you can touch someone in that way, I feel like I’m in purpose.”

More money needed for Pitt arena

Due to unforeseen repairs to the structure of the Pitt Meadows Arena, the upgrade costs are now approaching about $6.8 million.

It is now forecast that the cost to finish the work on the Pitt Meadows arena on Bonson Road will be at least $1 million more than anticipated.

The original price tag was $4.85 million for the construction and the design and architectural elements.

In August 2010, the cost to remediate the piles and accelerate some items deemed necessary, increased the total to $5.3 million.

The forecast for the construction contract has now been upgraded to $6.8 million.

The Pitt Meadows arena recently got a new operator in the form of Nustadia Recreation Inc., but the arena itself is behind schedule and over budget from completion.

A status update was provided to Pitt Meadows’ council in committee on Tuesday night, and a decision on any further direction was deferred until figures for the cost of the remaining work was

made available.

When work started in November 2009, it was discovered that more work had to be done to secure the building, and that drove up the cost initially.

“Piles were really the major driver of the cost change in phase one,” said Kelly Swift, general manager of parks and recreation.

Items also originally anticipated to occur in phase two of the upgrade also had to be moved into phase one, such as the evaporative condenser, ice plant and

fire protection upgrades to the red and blue rink.

“We focused on the structural integrity of the building,” said Swift, “the safety of the building, and the operation of the building.”

Phase one in its entirety should be complete by the end of June, and parks and recreation is now looking for direction from council as to how to proceed with completion of all the repairs.

“There’s other things we’d like to do in phase one,” said Swift, “but they do cost

a fair amount of money,” such as improving ventilation in the change rooms.

Councillor Deb Walters said that venting to her seems like a safety issue, and perhaps should be moved to phase one, but Councillor John Becker said he would like to see the numbers first before signing off on any decision.

Only the completion of the bar and restaurant area in the upstairs, replacement of the arena flooring, and replacement of the players benches remain in phase three of the project.

Discussion begins on North Lougheed Corridor Pitt Meadows council is looking at new development opportunities north of the Lougheed Highway.

A future development opportunity of a 50.5-hectare study area known as the North Lougheed Corridor is something Pitt Meadows council hopes will bring jobs, and opportunity, without losing the small-town feel of the City.

“One of the things people love about our community is the small-town feel. One of the ways we can do that is to provide walkability,” said Councillor Tracy Miyashita.

The area in question is east of Harris Road, west of

the Meadow Gardens Golf Course, and north of Lougheed Highway.

The north boundary could consist of a new road, as long as the land north and south of the road remains agricultural.

At Tuesday’s council in committee meeting, Tina Atva, senior planner for AECOM Canada, said they see this development as an iconic entry point for the City, and wants to ensure the plan is supported by stakeholders.

The development options are numerous at this time, and could include a business park, retail opportunities related to food, teaching farms, and a possible longer term plan in the form of a business hotel with meeting space.

David Bell of Colliers International, gave a market assessment of the project, saying it is in a prime location at the epicentre of two major transportation upgrades – the Pitt River and Golden Ears Bridges.

“We see this as being an outstanding area for retail, no question,” Bell said.

Darrell Zbeetnoff from Zbeetnoff Agro-Environmental Consulting discussed some ways the land could be used with an eye towards agriculture, including keeping things local such as with markets and small microprocessing plants, and perhaps a convention centre with an agricultural focus.

Council was told this is an area to keep an eye on this year, as AECOM starts to draw up some more land use options, with plans of bringing them back to council before arranging a public open house.

Pitt Meadows Elementary students and their Rivière-du-Loup twins, in front of Chateau Frontenac, visited Quebec City on Feb. 4. The purpose of a Monday night meeting was to educate recreational fishermen about what could happen to halibut fishing allowances if the allocation amount is not changed.

“Even with one halibut a day, our season will close in August.”

Since 2003, the federal government and the Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans decided that West Coast halibut would be harvested under a quota system.

Twelve per cent was allocated for recreational fishing, and 88 per cent was allocated for commercial fishing.

Alcock said the BCFC hopes a more permanent solution will be found before the year is out.

“To wait another year would just be devastating,” he said.

“Nine sport fishing lodges have closed in B.C. in the last two years,” Alcock said.

The prototypical power forward, he was only the second player in Bruins history to record back-toback 50-goal seasons.

He recorded his third 50-goal season in 1993/94 and finished the strikeshortened 1994/95 season with 27 goals in 42 games.

Neely is one of only a few NHL stars to have scored 50 goals in 50 games or fewer. In his case, he achieved the feat in an eye-popping 44 games during the 1993/94 campaign.

Prior to the ceremony, Neely spoke to the TIMES about his experiences growing up and playing minor hockey in the community.

“We came here in the summer of ’76 and that following fall signed up for hockey,” Neely said.

“My brother and I jumped right into the Ridge Meadows hockey program and it was fantastic. We were embraced right away and made some great friends through the hockey here.”

Neely said he was “usually one of the better players” on his minor hockey teams, which had to do with natural ability but just as importantly, lots of opportunities to skate and get ice time on the local rink.

Away from hockey, Neely said he cherished his formative years in the area.

“I loved living here,” he said. “We came from a base just outside of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. My father was in the air force and he retired.”

Even though he had extended family in the area, Neely admitted he was “petrified at first,” coming from a small base to Maple Ridge, which wasn’t a big city at the

“It seemed very big back then,” he said.

Neely said he never gets back to his former hometown as much as he’d like, what with his busy schedule with the Bruins and the Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care that he and his siblings initiated in 1995.

“My two sisters and their families are here, my grandmother is still here and I have some other relatives, cousins, aunts that are here, so it always feels like home when I come back here,” he said.

Neely has made a home in Boston, ever since being traded there close to a quarter of a century ago.

“I grew up in Boston, really; I was 21 when I got there,” said the 45-year-old Neely.

Throughout his NHL playing days, Neely had the pleasure of playing alongside many elite skaters, but one iconic Vancouver Canuck sprung to mind.

“I admired the way Stan Smyl prepared to play and how he played, and

then when I got to Boston, obviously a guy like Ray [Bourque], who is an elite defenceman and one of the top players in the league, and saw what he did to prepare himself to play,” Neely said. “Then there was a bunch of players in between, but those two guys kind of stick out.”

Following his playing career, Neely established the Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care. When he lost both his parents to cancer, he became inspired to help others living with the disease. In 1995, he and his siblings initiated the Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care to raise funds to help those struggling with cancer.

“Our goal was to be completely patient-focused and family-focused,” Neely said.

Originally funded by Neely through his hockey and business connections, the Boston-based Foundation has raised more than $16 million since its inception to provide comfort, support and hope to cancer patients and their families.

“That was a lot of fun,” she added.

With graduation fast approaching, Beckett is hoping to go to Bible college in New Zealand and Costa Rica, and wants to study business, and hopefully something that involves kids.

“I think it would be really cool to start my own sports school,” she said.

She is well on her way already with that goal, as she has moved on to competing in pentathlons, which is the same as a tetrathlon,

Maple Ridge native Carling Muir has been holding steady in fifth place on the BCCAA leaderboard.

Muir, who plays for Langara College, currently has 256 points out of 18 games.

but also includes fencing, and with her coach and her father, has started a local pentathlon club.

Beckett enjoys being a coach, as she likes training oher kids in the sports she loves.

“It teaches me a lot about how different people learn,” she said.

The club has people registered from all over B.C., as they are the only pentathlon club in the province.

“It’s all word of mouth,” she said, “and we’re full.”

Against Lord Tweedsmuir, the girls were behind after the first quarter, with 21-10 on the scoreboard, but coach Don Herman said his girls battled back in a “very tough first-round game.” “[The] team showed great composure,” he said, “and turned up the defensive intensity which wore down Lord Tweedsmuir.”

Standing alone at a table, with a pistol in one hand, and her eye trained on the target in front of her, Erin Beckett focused her brain to remember that every shot she took was its own competition.

The 17-year-old Maple Ridge Christian student was part of Team B.C. at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax, and won a team silver medal for air pistol.

Her score of 366 was the high score of the competition, and her and her teammate, Kathleen Auton from Ladner, tied for first place with a combined score of 710.

Unfortunately, in a process called a countback, when first place is decided the judges count backwards to whoever has the lowest score, and Beckett and Auton landed in second place.

That didn’t phase Beckett however.

“I was totally surprised to come second,” she said. “Let alone be tied for first.”

Beckett has been studying this sport for almost seven years, and started in tetrathlon with the Pony Club. That event consists of shooting, swimming, riding, and running, and she really enjoyed the shooting part of the competition.

“I’m pretty much competitive in anything,” she laughed.

She also enjoys the fact that air pistol can be practiced almost anywhere, as long as she disables the shooting aspect of the gun.

Attending the Canada Winter Games was a different experience for Beckett, who has been to two national competitions before, but never a multi-sport event.

“I got to meet all the different athletes from all the other provinces,” she said, and was able to make friends with other competitors from the other side of the country.

She said the Winter Games were a little less nerve-wracking than other competitions she has attended by herself, as Team B.C. made her feel so welcome and took good care of her.

“I was with Team B.C. the whole way,” she

The 10-kilometre race features about four km of the Pitt Meadows’ dike system, along with rural farm roads.

“Even though the course is flat,

the fact that nearly half the loop is on gravel will definitely play havoc on the race,” said Lyster.

“Add some wind and rain, and we’ll see who the strongest riders really are.”

Race the Ridge is held in May.

New season starts Two local students are part of the SFU men’s lacrosse 2011 roster this year.

Simon Fraser opened their 2011 regular season a few weeks ago with a 15-5 win over regional PNCLL Division II opponent Western Washington.

Branden Bloom from SRT, and Max Weselowski from Meadowridge School are part of the team for the season.

Flames even in playoffs

The local junior B hockey team lost their first playoff game, but won their second on Wednesday night.

The Port Moody Black Panthers are a good hockey team, said Ridge Meadows Flames coach Tavis Eaton, but he believes his team can defeat them to go on to the next round, as long as they stay focused.

The Flames started their playoffs on Monday night with a 5-3 loss to the Panthers, but were able to bring it back on home ice Wednesday night, and won 4-1.

“We could have won both games I think,” said Eaton. “I think we took them a little bit lightly because we were up 3-0 [into the second period].”

Eaton credits the Panthers with their win on Monday, and said they are a very good hockey team, with some “very, very good players.”

“If you take a shift off, they could put the puck in the net,” he said.

Christopher (CJ) Legassic scored the Flames’ first and third goal of the night, and it looked like the local boys were headed for a winning start to the 2011 playoff season.

However, when Port Moody scored at 13:51 into the second period, they did not

allow the Flames to get another goal into their net, and dominated the scoreboard for the remainder of play.

Legassic was named second star of the game for his scoring efforts.

On home ice Wednesday, the Flames put Mackenzie Skapski in goal, and he only let one slip through his gloves.

“They’re all working hard,” said Eaton.

“They’re all starting to play well as a team.”

Legassic scored the first goal, Dustin Cervo the second, Paul Piluso the third, and Lucas Douglas sealed the deal for the fourth.

Penalties were low “They’re all during the game, working hard... with none at all in they’re all the third period.

“Playoff hockey is starting to play so different, I think as a team.” it is, than the regular Tavis Eaton season,” Eaton said.

Facing the same team for multiple games in a row can give a team a real understanding of how their opponent works, but Eaton is still wary of his team letting down their guard too much.

The Flames play again on Friday night at Planet Ice, starting at 7:30 p.m., and then they are in Panther territory in Port Moody on Saturday, starting at 7:45 p.m.

“If we play the way we can, I think we can win,” said Eaton.

The playoff schedule is currently listed online at www.ridgemeadowsflames. com,up until game five. The rest depends on wins and losses: the team could be out in round one, or they could go on to play through to game seven.
