Kindness has been the driving force behind the international kettle campaign since the idea started in San Francisco in December 1891. Chiu said Christmas is the season when people tend to reach

out to one another: “Christmas is a time of giving, and we’re giving to the needy.” The Good Samaritans who volunteer time to staff the 11 kettles in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are a key component to the campaign, said Leslie, who noted, “the more often we have volunteers at the kettles, the more money we will receive.” “I really encourage people to give up their time because that

definitely makes just as much of an impact as giving money,” she said. The only requirements for a kettle volunteer is a smile and a good attitude. “It’s a nice opportunity to interact with people,” Leslie said. To those who give, she said every penny counts: “I think we all understand that people can only give what they can give.”

Contact lenses with built-in computer monitors, using your arm as a screen, moving the equivalent of 15,000 CDs of information in a second, controlling movement with thought – this technology is not the stuff of science fiction, it’s the way of the future. In fact, it’s the very near future, if you believe Maple Ridge Secondary teacher Ted McCain who opened Learning for Tomorrow, a community forum about the future of education on Tuesday evening. McCain presented a challenge to the educators and community members who packed the Thomas Haney Centre to make education relevant for the students of today who have grown up with technology unimaginable just a generation ago. “With the best of intentions, we’re preparing our students for the past,” McCain said. And his presentation was convincing – and an eye-opner for many of the adults who listened to it, with some commenting afterward that it made them feel old. The community forum was meant to start a conversation about revamping education given that the brains of students today are different from people who grew up in the 20th century. About 230 people packed into the rotunda at Thomas Haney on Tuesday night including students, teachers, administrators, city councillors, school board trustees, staff from the District of Maple Ridge and the City of Pitt Meadows, as well as a wide variety of people from the community. The reason students are so different today compared to just 15 years ago is the exponential growth in technology and how it has permeated every facet of life. This growth can be seen in how much faster and cheaper technology has become so that it’s not uncommon for people to be carrying around a “super computer” in their pocket.

Man stabbed in gut

Victim was airlifted to hospital while a 25-year-old woman was arrested. Ridge Meadows RCMP are recommending charges of aggravated assault against a young woman, after her partner was airlifted to hospital with stab wounds. At about 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Mounties and paramedics arrived at an apartment at 11872 Laity St., where they found a 44-year-old man had been stabbed. The victim was rushed to hospital by the Air Ambulance, where he had to

undergo emergency surgery. According to police, he suffered stab wounds to the abdomen that were “quite serious” and on Thursday he still wasn’t “out of the woods” although he was reportedly in stable condition. Police arrested the victim’s partner after learning details of the incident. The suspect was kept in police custody overnight, and appeared in Port Coquitlam provincial court on Thursday afternoon. “This is an isolated incident between these two people, said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Alanna Dunlop.

Grant a child a Christmas wish Vancity’s Angel Tree is full of gift requests from needy kids.

Christmas presents are appearing under the Angel Tree at Vancity’s Meadowtown location and they’ll be distributed to children who frequent the Pitt Meadowsbased Meadow Ridge Food Bank. The Vancity Pitt Meadows’ community branch kicked off its fifth annual Angel Tree giftgiving program last week and several of the wishes have already been picked up. Members of the public are encouraged to take a wish, which specifies the age of the child and the type of gift he or she would like, then bring the gift unwrapped back to the credit union. While there is no dollar amount specified, Jayne

Perrault, branch manager at Vancity Pitt Meadows Community Branch, said the gifts are often valued around $20 to $25. This year there are 50 wishes on the tree. Last year Vancity Pitt Meadows distributed 55 gifts donated by the public to needy children. At the end of the program, the Meadow Ridge Food Bank will collect the gifts and ensure the children receive Santa’s holiday cheer this Christmas season. “We’re thrilled to be hosting the Angel Tree program once again this year, in partnership with the Meadow Ridge Food Bank, to help share the holiday spirit with local kids,” Perrault said. “At Vancity, giving back to our local community where we live and work is very important for us.”

Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. David Ewert is receiving a meritorious service award as a result of using his experience, compassion, patience, and presence of mind to calm down a suicidal man last year. Ewert talked to a suicidal man in Maple Ridge for two hours in March 2009, calmed him and prevented him from taking his own life. And Ewert was recognized for those efforts Thursday night at the Police Honours Banquet at Government House in Victoria. Ewert joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 2000. He was first stationed in Mission, then transferred to the Ridge Meadows detachment in February 2008. The incident, for which he is receiving the award,

Campbell will survive Editor,

Don’t cry for Gordon Campbell, he could live off the fruits of his labours and favours to giant corporations for a hundred lifetimes. The so-called BC Liberal party can get rid of Gordon Campbell, but they can never hide the fact that they allowed Campbell to run B.C. like his own private kingdom. My MLA and most every other liberal or whatever they are, meekly accepted his one-man rule, slavishly mouthing the talking points, and ignoring, legitimizing and justifying the lies and corruption. They are mostly all guilty of lies and deceit and are guilty at the very least of dereliction of trust and duty to their respective constituents. Even if they could find their way back to the centre of the political spectrum where

Liberals are historically supposed to govern from, there is a colossal betrayal of trust and ethics and integrity that would have to be overcome and dealt with I don’t see that honestly happening with this crowd; in fact many have not only defended but endorsed Mr. Campbell’s behaviour as the proper way to run a government. If they were ever to get my vote they would have to at the very least acknowledge as well as practice, which in a democracy a mandate from the people is a necessary mechanism and personal integrity is a must for true democracy to work.

Humans not cats to blame Editor,

David Gaunt’s suggestion to “pop ‘songbirds cats’ into your favourite Internet search engine and follow any of the links” may indeed produce sites that state cats are responsible for the decline in songbird populations. The web can support any point of view. Search further. My search found the following information. A 1994 Worldwatch Institute study showed that, of the world’s 9,000 bird species, some populations have fallen by 75 per cent due to habitat loss, overtrapping, drought and pesticides. Cats were noticeably absent as a factor.

To find the guilty species, we can look in the mirror. More than 60 studies of feral cats on different continents reached three main conclusions. First, they’re opportunistic feeders, eating what’s most easily available. As scavengers, many rely on garbage and handouts. Second, they’re rodent specialists; birds are a small percentage of their diet when they rely solely on hunting for food. Third, cats can prey on populations without destroying them. Otherwise mice would be extinct.

It is disheartening to hear the council seeks to acquiesce to prevailing pressures to disinvite Divine intervention and participation in the affairs of council. If your best alternative is to offer a moment of meditation, you may as well offer a short naptime or moment to listen to a selection on your iPod. Even as a nation we have always acknowledged there is a greater purpose for mankind than the day-today monotony that most find themselves adhering to. The great Western nations have each valued the inclusion of God in every significant national and governmental ceremony, as it reminds us of our heritage, our values, and our obligations towards one another. It is painfully clear that nations that have not followed Christian values display astonishing disregard for human life, not to mention restrictions on the hard fought freedoms we here enjoy and expect in our own country. There is a larger purpose for us than simply making a living, or staying out of the red in our finances, or setting up a nice fund for our hopeful retirement. Opening meetings with prayer acknowledges there may be more important things going on in our community than what is on the paper agenda before you. Asking for God’s guidance and help, strength and wisdom, brings a spirit of wisdom and guidance to council proceedings that God alone can bring. The thousands of Maple Ridge residents who weekly seek the wisdom and guidance of God in their own churches of choice know the value of prayer for our families, marriages, children, and city leaders. We are certainly praying for you, and we pray to God you will continue to invite Him to bring His wisdom and guidance to bear on your meetings for the sake of our businesses and our families.

As I prepare to shop for the upcoming holiday season, I can’t help but wonder one thing... Why isn’t everything free over the holidays? Now, this may sound unrealistic, but hear my reasoning. Christmas shopping is extremely expensive and usually leaves everyone in the poor house. Considering the unemployment rate and amount of people under the poverty line in B.C,, it just seems foolish for people to have to shell out even more to buy other people wonderful things. It is fiscally irresponsible for the merchants in British Columbia to charge for Christmas presents. Not only do we have to buy presents, but we have to pay an increased sales tax on these presents – through no fault of our own. Gordon Campbell should be using his retirement fund to buy everyone a Christmas present. Hmm… maybe that’s why he resigned?

Girls Choir training group through their rendition of Sing Out! during Saturday’s performance at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Along with singing, the group of girls also raised money and food for the local Friends in Need Food Bank. The event helped raise more than $700 and approximately 400 pounds of food.

Girls choir in the groove

The award-winning British Columbia Girls Choir is looking for songbirds for their auditioned programs and SongClub. The choir practises half the time in Maple Ridge, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, and has as its artistic director Fiona Blackburn who hails from Maple Ridge. B.C. Girls Choir offers four program areas that suit all ages from five to young adult and auditions are now being scheduled for January 2011. The choir runs three nine-week terms a year and each term ends with a concert. The non-auditioned choir, SongClub, is

for girls ages eight to 13. It’s a new program designed for girls to try out singing with movement and performing. Girls can explore a wide variety of music in unison, two and three parts, and different languages. They will also perform in major concerts and some festivals. There’s nothing funny about prostate cancer, but Maple Ridge comedian Russ Brummer hopes that everyone will get a kick out of his comedy night to benefit the very serious disease. Brummer will be hosting the event and also performing with about five other comedians next Tuesday at the ACT, as part of the After-Hours lobby event series. Brummer has been doing stand-up comedy for about a year and likes the idea of collaborating with other young and local amateur comedians. thought that my old tin of coins was worth so much! I can ﬁnally afford to renovate my kitchen”. Perry Bruce continued, “Canadian coins prior to 1967, and American coins prior to 1964 are all made with silver, and we have noticed a large increase of customers coming to the Roadshow with coins and cashing them in for their silver value”. Car accidents often result in obvious physical injuries – for example, broken limbs caused by the sudden impact. The law is clear that you can recover damages from the person at fault, including compensation for pain and suffering. But occasionally an accident can result in more subtle, less obvious injuries. These cases are often more difficult (and sometimes impossible) to verify objectively. Even though medical examinations may not pinpoint a physical cause, you may still experience ongoing pain, sometimes long after the accident and after the normal recovery period has gone by. Can you still recover damages for your pain, suffering and loss of enjoyment of life when your pain is subjective only? The answer is yes. Take the recent case of a fit and active 23-year-old Surrey woman, whose car was rear-ended in an accident in September, 2006. The only minor damage to her car was to the rear bumper. While she was somewhat in shock and felt “a little sore,” she was able to exchange insurance information with the other driver and drive herself home. The next day, she visited a walk-in medical clinic and was given a prescription for shoulder and upper back pain. Over the next four years, she experienced and reported persistent pain in her shoulder and mid/lower back on the left side, which radiated to her left hip. For the first year after the accident, she went for 13 physiotherapy treatments. However, most of the medical examinations and tests – including a CATscan, MRI and X-rays – couldn’t find any direct link to a physical injury causing her pain. Her doctors determined that she had suffered soft tissue injuries in the accident. Although the normal recovery period for those tissues to heal had passed, she continued to find it uncomfortable to sit for long periods of time, couldn’t play hockey or volleyball anymore (though she could swim and do yoga), and was more irritable due to her ongoing discomfort. Although she could and probably would improve over

time by following a structured exercise program, she would never be able to regain her pre-accident level of ﬁtness. The BC Supreme Court rejected the defence argument that she was exaggerating her symptoms or pain. The court found her to be a credible witness, whose testimony was consistent with the reports of her physicians and the evidence of other witnesses. “The absence of objective physical ﬁndings is not determinative of whether [she] continues to suffer from chronic pain,” said the judge. “Since pain may well be a subjective phenomenon not easily measurable by independent objective indicia, the assessment of [her] soft tissue injuries to a certain extent turns on the assessment of her subjective complaints and reported symptoms.” The court also rejected the defence argument that the severity of her reported injuries was inconsistent with the minor damage to her car. The negligible vehicle damage was only one factor to be considered, said the court; the extent of her injuries was to be assessed on the evidence as a whole. After considering all the testimony, the court concluded that she was entitled to compensation. She was awarded $40,000 for her pain and suffering, plus another $22,000 for lost future earnings and care. If you’ve been hurt in a car accident due to the fault of another, consult your lawyer. Society will hold court as Maple Ridge gets medieval The barns at the Albion Fairgrounds will be transformed into a pre-1600 European town.

this is the first time such an event has been open to the public here, although the society has been a part of the community for a long time, said long-time SCA member and organizer of the event Mary Kittel. “This is a way to introduce ourselves to the community,” Kittel said, “and we welcome anyone to come down and play with us.” The SCA is a worldwide organization that is dedicated to the preservation, research and recreation of the crafts, arts and experiences of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. At least 80 members are expected to take part in Saturday’s event and Kittel acknowledged that this is a little bit nerve wracking as it is a different style of event from what the society is used to (usually it’s for members only). “It’s fun reaching out to the public though,” she said, “and

All this and more will be part of the Medieval Festival taking place in Maple Ridge this Saturday. It’s an event open to all ages and all levels of interest. Organized by the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA),

Later in the day the prince and princess will be holding court and there will be some exciting door prizes. Laura Shortt, a 23-year-old actress from Maple Ridge, is appearing in Douglas College’s production of the 1966 play The Rimers of Eldritch. Shortt has been studying theatre for the past two years at Douglas College, and has been making a splash in the local theatre scene, appearing in The Little Dog Laughed and a Maple Ridge production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Before starting at Douglas College, Shortt graduated from UBC with a bachelor’s degree in history. “I hadn’t done any acting previously, but it was something I had always wanted to try, and it was also something that I thought might help me overcome my shyness,” Shortt told the TIMES. “I took an acting class, found I really enjoyed it and then on a whim decided to audition for the theatre program at Douglas College, which I was accepted into,” Shortt said. She loves trying to get inside the minds and emotions of the characters she plays. In The Rimers of Eldritch, Shortt plays Cora Groves, a 34-year-old woman who falls in love with an 18-year-old boy. “Cora is an unusually strong character, especially in terms of parts available to actresses,” Shortt said. “When life knocks her down she pulls herself right back up

Years of weaving and spinning In addition to handspun items, the annual show will also feature woodwork, pottery and glass art.

Whonnock weavers and spinners have worked all year to produce one-of-a-kind handspun, woven, knitted and felted items, including bags, blankets, cat toys, Christmas tree decorations, hats, jackets, mittens, rugs, scarves, shawls, slippers, socks and sweaters for Christmas giving or to enjoy in your own home. Practical handwoven baskets as well as decorative baskets that are works of art will be found. There will be skeins of handspun yarn in familiar and exotic

fibres to delight your senses and allow you to make your own masterpieces. The weavers will demonstrate weaving, handspinning, carding and felting, and will be happy to answer any questions you may have while enjoying the show. Anyone can try their hand at weaving on a loom set up for just that purpose. There will be several guest artists featuring woodwork, pottery, glass art, ironwork and teddy bears. And there will be a chance to win one of the door prizes. Whonnock Weavers and Spinners will host its 30th annual open house at Whonnock Lake Centre, 27871 113 Ave. next to Whonnock Lake, on Sunday Nov. 28, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Students today need a more robust education in order to be successful in this new kind of world they are entering into,” Unwin said. “We need to begin to focus our curriculum more on the skills of critical thinking, problem solving, innovating, effectively communicating, collaborating, and self-directing versus so much content that is the core of our curriculum currently.” Clarkson said the forum on Tuesday started a conversation about education reform and he hopes that conversation will “permeate the community.” “Starting this conversation is a step in the right direction,” he said. Although the message McCain gave at the forum was delivered with a sense of urgency, Clarkson said he became a teacher in 1973 because he felt there was an urgent need to reform education. Rather than Jan Unwin trying to Superintendent change the whole system at once, Clarkson said, a better approach would be to start some pilot projects using technology in teaching and then learn “best practices.” The system in place now doesn’t serve all students, Clarkson said. “We need all kids to be successful.” He doesn’t imagine in the future that all schools will look the same, nor should students be divided into grades. “We won’t be grading kids by age … like a factory line,” he said. The community conversation that began at the forum is just the beginning and will continue online, Unwin said, with the participants continuing to give input.

Hockey is arguably Canada’s most popular sport and with so many people wanting to play, regardless of level or ability, it takes some experience juggling to make sure everyone has enough ice time. This is a feat of organizational skills Planet Ice league coordinator Mike Duddy knows all too well. The adult leagues started in

Maple Ridge in 2001 with 14 teams and has since grown to 32 men’s teams and eight women’s teams. “As with anything to do with hockey in B.C., it’s growing all the time,” Duddy said. Part of that growth is being able to manage the teams so that everyone has enough ice time. Sometimes teams have to play games really late at night during the week, and Duddy said everyone has a crack at the late shifts but it doesn’t really matter because they really just want to play hockey. “I think the rink is only closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Superbowl Sunday,” he joked.
