Emotions were running high at Tuesday night’s Maple Ridge council meeting when the subject of removing the opening prayer was debated. A notice of motion to remove prayers from the beginning of Maple Ridge council meetings, put forward by Councillor Linda King, morphed into a motion to have a moment of reflection instead – but there were various interpretations around the council table about what that would mean. In the end, council voted to pass first reading on a motion to replace the prayer with a moment of reflection and seek further input from the public. King said prayers at council meetings no longer seem “suitable in the multicultural and multifaith community that Maple Ridge has become” and that “council chambers should be a welcoming place for all.” The latest statistics she could find were from 2001 and showed that one-third of Maple Ridge citizens don’t identify with any religious affiliation. Councillor Mike Morden said when he became a councillor, he didn’t expect this issue to come up. He also pointed out that something like this would usually be “complaint driven” or “issue driven,” but removing the prayer wasn’t.

Billy Miner Pub and the old Bank of Montreal next door might finally be designated historical buildings, if an agreement between the new owner and District of Maple Ridge is finalized. When the Mission Springs company bought the building in the spring, they went to meet District staff to discuss the property and its potential. One option presented to them was to enter a heritage revitalization agreement guaranteeing the owner would preserve the building but giving them some leeway in municipal bylaws and regulations. “We thought it was pretty beneficial for the District to maintain that building,” said Brock Rodgers, a manager of Mission Springs. The heritage revitalization agreement supersedes some municipal bylaws and regulations and in this case it will mean the pub can allow parking on the lot east of the building zoned industrial, which normally doesn’t allow for parking. Superman has the Fortress of Solitude; Art Giroux has the One Way Club. Like the Man of Steel’s mystical fortress, the One Way Club is Giroux’s place of sanctuary. Giroux has been a club member for about four years, and before that, his life was spiralling out of control. “My alcoholism [and] drug addiction took me right down to a place where, I guess, I was pretty much suicidal,” Giroux said. “I had no friends, no family left, I had lost my business, had no where to go.” The One Way Club is a drug and alcohol free facility complete with a meeting/banquet hall, social room (including games room and TV), and a very affordable cafe offering home style foods at, Giroux said, “reasonable rates.” The club is open 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., has nine board members (some of whom have been with the club for as many as 30 years) and four part-time employees. Membership costs just $5 a month, and $50 for a year. Giroux said the first time he walked into the facility at 22270 North Ave., his life changed forever. “It is also a non-profit organization that has contributed to the wellness of hundreds, if not thousands, of community members,” Giroux emailed the TIMES. “The environment created there saved my life! I am pretty confident in saying that I’m not the only one that feels that way.” The One Way Club has been operating for the past 35 years. Over the past few years, however, the club has seen a decline in membership, volunteer service, donations, and outside contributions alike. “We used to get a lot of community donations, our membership was higher, and that’s all falling off,” Giroux explained. Please do what you can to help, and at the very least, come have a laugh at my expense.” Giroux said the One Way Club is an absolutely drug and alcohol free facility, “so if you have had a drink or used a recreational drug, please come back and support the club some other time, and we’ll be there to support you.”

Ignorance is no excuse for hate On Tuesday in Kentville, N.S., Nathan Rehberg, 21, was convicted of criminal harassment and inciting hatred. He joins his brother Justin, 20, who was similarly convicted last Friday. It seems the Rehbergs got them- Lyn selves in trouble when Michelle Cockburn Lyon, who is white, and Shayne Straight Howe, who is black, awoke Feb. 21 to find a two-metre cross with a noose on it burning outside their Poplar Grove, N.S., home. Their five children, ages two to 17, probably heard one or both of the brothers shout, “Die n-----r, die.” Justin Rehberg’s conviction constitutes the first time in Canada that cross burning has been defined as a hate crime. He will appear in court for sentencing on Dec. 14 and the Crown intends to ask for jail time. Nathan will go to court for sentencing in January, 2011. The brothers may well end up sharing a cell. Sadly, there are some Canadians who vigorously defend Justin’s actions – while of course, vigorously insisting they are not defending them. Those same people can add Nathan to their list. The brothers’ uncle Darrell Boutilier was the first person to excuse poor maligned Justin. Outside the courtroom last Friday, he told reporters that while Justin shouldn’t have done what he did, his nephew was willing to apologize to the couple and that should have been the end. “... everybody makes mistakes when you’re young. I mean, I’ve done foolish things in my crazy youth, but that’s life,” said Boutilier. And the Internet is full of comments that deplore the convictions because they: trample the Rehbergs’ right to freedom of speech; make having racist beliefs a crime; don’t take into account that people are angry because the government has opened up the country to too many immigrants … and on and on. Of course any sensible person understands that the burning of crosses on front lawns is not

synonymous with free speech, nor is it our inalienable right to shout “Die n----r, die” at our neighbours (nor is it our right to insert such words as ‘faggot’, or any other racist, homophobic, sexist or religious slur into that bigoted sentence and call it freedom of speech). This does not mean that bigots are prevented from being bigoted. Any one Talk of us is free to think racist thoughts, to make disgusting remarks about gays, Muslims or any other minority. But the moment our nasty thoughts and remarks become actions, we’ve stepped over the line. In other words, there’s a huge difference between my saying: “I’d like to burn a huge twometre picture of a bare butt on the Rehbergs’ lawn” and actually doing so. Youth and ignorance are no excuse. If they were, young people would be able to trample all over the civil rights of others and bigots of all ages would be applauded as they screamed insults and/or beat up gays, Muslims, blacks and whoever else they look down on. One of the saddest aspects of any defence of the Rehberg brothers is that across Canada, in every town and city, we are trying to deal with bullying in our schools – both at school and on the Internet. We deplore the fact that kids are picked on – sometimes so badly that they contemplate suicide – and sometimes succeed in doing so. The Rehbergs no doubt need some jail time for their malicious, ignorant actions, but I’m not sure that is enough. Perhaps the two ought to receive an additional sentence of a year of reading – about how the 19th century underground railway helped countless black people fleeing slavery to come to Canada and settle in Nova Scotia. And it might be a good idea to sentence Justin and Nathan to a summer of cutting Shayne Howe’s lawn, under supervision of course, tidying up the garden and maybe planting some flowers. Perhaps Justin and Nathan might learn something … or maybe not.

Revisiting Pitt traffic calmers Editor,

The following is an open letter to Pitt Meadows mayor and council, regarding revisiting of Park Road traffic calming. In the 15 years that my family and I have lived on Park Road, there have been several attempts to have council deal with traffic safety issues (traffic calming) along Park Road between the Lougheed Highway and just past the Bonson Road four-way. This has included neighbourhood petitions, presentations to council, and correspondence. Traffic has become heavier, speed has remained a factor, many drivers do not stop for pedestrians at Park and Somerset’s crosswalk (a direct route to Edith McDermott Elementary and the playing fields), and some drivers still do not obey the four-way at Bonson Road and Park. The subdivision of Somerset is a magnet for young families. It is well-designed, well-kept, and in close proximity to elementary schools, playgrounds, and playing fields, as well as shopping, and public transportation. This will not change. But what will change, and has been increasing, is the level and speed of traffic along Park Road, especially during the rush hours. Traffic calming measures already installed in other areas of Pitt Meadows must be put into place at these two vital spots, as soon as possible, and perhaps this is the perfect time with the availability of federal stimulus money.

Re: Sustainable Development Opportunity It seems to me that building more and more homes is not a very good solution for an ageold problem, that is how can we develop our area in a manageable and sustainable fashion. It appears that if there are no housing developments being built, then there is not much going on in Maple Ridge. For every door we build, we are not knocking one down, we are always adding to the stock. Once the home is built, furnished and landscaped, then the money that’s injected into the local economy dries up, and the District is faced with supplying the various services that these new neighbourhoods will require. Our current economic system only works when there is growth and the ongoing development that accompanies that influx of people and goods. Maple Ridge is surrounded by farmland, forests, creeks, lakes, rivers, parks, and mountains. Most of us who were born here or have decided to relocate here know that we are blessed with many natural amenities that are easily accessible. We have to add to the amenity stock just as we have added to the housing stock, our local parks are swamped with both the locals and everyone else in the Metro Vancouver area, as we have what they want. The trouble is we cannot create more lakes, rivers, and mountains, we have to work with what we have. One of our best natural assets is Alouette Lake, and that, along with Blue Mountain, could be one solution that we could pursue in the planning of a sustainable community.

With what is being predicted as the coldest and wettest winter in 50 years, the need for donations of warm clothing and blankets is even more crucial now than in past years. Peter Simpson, the president and CEO of the Greater Vancouver Home Builders Association, got the idea for the Coats for Kids clothing drive 15 years ago. He was driving through a lowincome neighbourhood and saw children walking in the cold without adequate coats. He quickly started collecting donations with the association, and now donations are accepted at 43 home builder locations in 13 different municipalities. The Coats for Kids drive will go from Nov. 15 to 30. Coats, scarves, gloves, blankets and new unwrapped toys will be accepted and distributed to children, teenagers and adults locally. Little tools chefs can’t live without Due to a couple of revelations I have had with my food processor recently, I thought it would be appropriate to focus this column on kitchen gadgets and appliances I find worthy. I usually opt for the manual alternative to kitchen prep – old-fashioned cutting by hand and elbow grease – but sometimes it is not always the best way. Recently, my wife wanted to make a dish from her childhood that basically consists of layers of thinly sliced potatoes, carrots, and other vegetables. These ingredients, along with seasonings and chunks of sausage, are cooked together to create a single-pot casserole. When it came time to prepare this dish, the diehard chef in me reached for my knife, readying myself for the task at hand.

“Why don’t we use the slicer attachment on our food processor?” exclaimed my wife. After some convincing, I decided to give it a try and was quite impressed with the uniform slices and ease of preparation. To be honest, it was the first time in the 15 years of owning this food processor that I actually used the slicer attachment. I have also discovered (with subtle pressuring from my wife) that the regular blade of a food processor can also ease the preparation of finely chopping vegetables, as long as caution is used to prevent from pureeing them into oblivion. A hand-powered kitchen appliance that I love is my all-in-one apple peeler, corer, and slicer. A lip on the edge of one’s counter

is not necessary as it simply suctions to the surface with amazing strength. A single apple is pressed onto the hand-crank, and all of these tasks are completed with a number of circular revolutions – perfect to speed up pie/crumble making. And the best part is that I purchased mine in new condition at a secondhand store for only $5. For small hand tool gadgets, there are a few that

Annual sale showcases artists Local painters and sculptors will showcase works at the Garibaldi Art Club’s fall show and sale.

The Garibaldi Art Club will hold its 51st annual fall show and sale, with items ranging from original paintings to pottery and ceramics. The show will be at Fraserview Village Hall, with an opening reception on Friday, Nov. 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. It will continue Nov. 20 and 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Club members are invited to display their work in this popular show, which features a diverse group of talented artists. Artwork will include large- and small-framed paintings, unframed paintings, and a wonderful selection of art cards. Paintings will be in various medias and styles. Club members also have assembled two beautiful gift baskets valued at $200 each, with gifts that include prints, art cards, gift vouchers to stores and other items. Raffle tickets will be available at the show. Linda Madu, an artist in the Garibaldi Art Club, will be displaying some of her paintings at the upcoming show at 22610 116 Ave. – at 227 Street, just off the Haney Bypass. She won the people’s choice award at the club’s last show for her dandelion painting Connectivity. Long-time friends and long lost teammates since their bantam hockey days with the Ridge Meadows Barracudas reunited on the ice on Halloween, but this time they were on opposing teams. Lauren Mallo and Jade Werger played each other in a game in Castleton, Vt. Werger is in her second year at Castleton State College in Vermont, and she plays for their women’s hockey team, the Spartans. Mallo is also continuing with her love of being on the ice, playing for the Buffalo State Bengals women’s hockey team in New York. Werger and the Spartans won the game 3-2 over the Bengals, and Werger was named offensive player of the game. “It’s a little weird to see her on the opposing team but it’s cool to have grown up playing with each other and now we’re both in college playing,” Werger told the TIMES of playing her old teammate. Werger played boys hockey before joining the Barracudas for girls bantam hockey; that’s when she met Mallo, and they became fast friends. “It felt good to finally see her again, and to hear Maple Ridge announced twice in the starting lineup was pretty cool because that never happens,” Mallo said of their NCAA hockey game. “It was sort of a surreal feeling to be on the other side of the country, in another country and see your friend from home. It is nice every now and then to see a familiar face.” Mallo started living on the ice at an early age playing ringette. She then switched to hockey at age 11, and she hasn’t looked back since. “Playing hockey has really made me who I am today, whether it’s with leadership, the friends I have, or the people I know,” she said. “I think that hockey has always

been a part of my life; I wouldn’t know what to do without it.” Mallo said playing hockey has given her a chance to prove herself to naysayers in her past, and it has also allowed her to feel the joy that comes from scoring her first college goal, making the perfect shot and making her parents proud of her. Playing for the Bengals, Mallo has been able to branch out and play forward. “It’s fun to learn a new position, but at the same time apply what I already knew about that position and what parts come naturally,” she said. “The most exciting part overall is scoring, being on the ice when someone scores, or coming back in a game where it seems impossible.” Werger has also been switching it up on the ice, currently playing

left winger. She is a small player – she’s only 5’3” and weighs 125 pounds, but she said her strength as a player lies in her speed. Werger started playing ice hockey when she was eight years old, and before that she played street hockey for as long as she can remember. She progressed with boys, then girls hockey, and at age 16 moved to Warner, Alta., to play for the Warner Hockey School. The fast-paced game has been a huge part of her life, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I’m a competitive person and have always enjoyed athletics because of the competition and fun I get out of it, win or lose, especially when playing against or with my friends,” Werger said. She also works hard in school

and in her spare time she does relax, read and play other sports, but she still finds herself returning to hockey – even playing NHL hockey on her Xbox when she’s not on the ice. However, once out of university, there aren’t too many opportunities to play hockey for women besides the Olympics. Werger said she plans to continue with sports though; she is completing a major in health psychology and a minor in fitness/sports science. Eventually, she said she wants to be a clinical sports psychologist. Mallo is also looking to the future and a career that may not involve hockey. She is majoring in biology and hopes to have a career working with animals or botany. Even so, Mallo and Werger encouraged girls in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows to pursue hockey and continue to enjoy it. “Have fun and enjoy it while it lasts because time flies so quickly,” Werger said. “If you have dreams to play in college or university, just work hard on and off the ice and at school.” She encouraged girls to start doing their research about schools they are interested in, for both academics and their hockey programs to find the best fit. Mallo said girls should try to get exposure by playing the highest level of hockey possible, and never forget to just have fun. Ray Werger, Jade’s father, said what makes his daughter and Mallo great hockey players is “their passion for the game, their dedication to improving their skills on an ongoing basis, their competitiveness, their hard work ethic and their athleticism.” Ray is the president of Fraser Valley Phantom female midget AAA hockey, and his wife is the president of the Ridge Meadows Barracudas. He said girls should continue to look for opportunities to play. “We have always tried to instill in our daughter that she could accomplish whatever she set out to do, and that success is not determined by gender,” Ray said. “Too often we give an unbalanced amount of attention to male sporting accomplishments. The community and the little girls coming up need to know that there are plenty of opportunities for them as well.”

Couple’s love stands the test of time

As thoughts turn this week to the many sacrifices men and women have given for their country in past and present wars, one veteran is spending his precious moments with his long-time sweetheart. Bill Little and his wife Jean, who live in Haney, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last Wednesday – they were married Nov. 3, 1945, just days after Bill was released from the U.S. Navy. The two met in a speech class at the University of Utah in 1939. Bill said there was a seating plan and Jean sat to his left. “She gave her talk and it was very dramatic,” he

said, with a twinkle in his eye. “When she sat down I said, ‘That was very nice Miss Preece, but don’t you think it was a little overdone?’” Jean laughed, “I could have killed him.” “And we were friends for life,” Bill recounted. Although that encounter didn’t exactly endear Bill to Jean, she said things changed when she was playing piano at the university. “He wandered in when I was playing in the lounge, where all the university kids went at their lunch hour, and he leaned on the end of the piano and winked at me,” Jean said. “It was the wink that got it. The song I was playing was It Had to be You, and that’s where it all started.” Bill and Jean began dating, but her parents didn’t approve of him because he was not of their faith. Bill later proposed to her

with a $25 ring he bought at a pawn shop, but her parents told her to give it back. Shortly after, Bill joined the navy and went to Pearl Harbor, but unbeknownst to Jean’s parents, she wore the ring he gave her on a necklace while he was gone. Although Jean’s parents didn’t approve of him at the time, she waited diligently for him to come home. Bill returned safely from Pearl Harbor in 1945 and went to officer’s training at Columbia University in New York. Jean flew there to get married to him, expecting she would have to go home afterwards and he would continue to serve in the navy, but Bill had just been released. “I was a little disappointed my groom wasn’t in an officer’s uniform; he was in a brown khaki suit,” she said. “He was released

before I got there, so I stayed, and we’ve been together ever since.” Sixty-five years later, Jean said their love has only continued to grow stronger. “He always says, ‘Have I told you I love you?’ I can’t tell you how many times a day he says that,” she said. Jean, 88, and Bill, 90, aren’t afraid to show a bit of affection in public, either.

“We always go to bed together and hold hands and cuddle up and tell each other we love each other,” Jean said. “We hold hands while we’re watching a movie, we hold hands in the car and we hold hands in church.” Bill also said a secret to their success is keeping a good sense of humour. “We laugh a lot, at ourselves more than anything,” he said.

Jean, a kindergarten and Grade 1 teacher for 39 years, continues to keep busy playing and writing songs – if you give her any four notes she’ll sit down at the piano and compose a song on the spot. Jean has also written books, including one about their life together. Bill, who worked for Reader’s Digest and was an editor for Time Magazine, has an artistic side, which is apparent by his paintings that adorn the walls of their home and workshop. Bill and Jean have three children, nine grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way. Most of their family lives far away, so the couple celebrated their 65th anniversary by going out to dinner by themselves. “We didn’t need anybody, just each other, that’s all we need,” Jean said.
