Two dead after car crosses median

RCMP say driver will possibly face charges of dangerous driving causing death. Two people are dead after a crash at Lougheed Highway and Harris Road late Tuesday night. Ridge Meadows RCMP arrived at the two-vehicle crash at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday night on Lougheed highway just east of the intersection of Harris Road in Pitt Meadows. The crash involved an eastbound Toyota Paseo skidding sideways over top of the concrete median into westbound traffic. The Toyota flipped over, contacting the roof of a westbound Suzuki Swift. The two occupants of the Suzuki

were killed immediately on impact. The driver of the Toyota was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The deceased are Pitt Meadows residents John De Oliveira, 21, and Rebecca Dyer, 19. De Oliveira had been giving Dyer a ride home after a concert. Dyer had won awards for her fundraising and volunteering with the Variety Club. “It’s looking like we will be forwarding charges of dangerous driving causing death,” said RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop.

The Toyota driver is a 23-yearold female from Pitt Meadows. Her name is being withheld due to the active criminal investigation. Lougheed Highway was closed for six hours for investigational purposes and several witnesses were identified and interviewed. According to witnesses, the Toyota driver was driving aggressively and this appears to be the major contributing factor, police say. Police are asking witnesses to call 463-6251 and ask for the main investigator, Const. Mitch Gordon. With files from PostMedia News.

RCMP open new youth office at Greg Moore centre On Tuesday, the District of Maple Ridge, the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Parks and Leisure youth services, and the Ridge Meadows RCMP unveiled their new community police office at the Greg Moore Youth Centre. Youth centre staff were joined by the District of Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin, the officer in charge of the Ridge Meadows RCMP, Superintendent Dave Walsh, and local youth and foot beat officers. An official ribbon cutting was preceded by a few words from Superintendent Dave Walsh, Mayor Ernie Daykin, and the Coordinator of Parks and Leisure youth services, Tony Controneo. “The opening of this police office at the Greg Moore Youth Centre is an example of the excellent relationship that the Ridge Meadows RCMP has with the District of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows as well as Parks and Leisure services and the local youth centre,” said Superintendent Dave Walsh. “This office will allow these partnerships to continue to flourish.”

Police find stolen truck Police are recommending charges of possession of stolen property and possession of break-in tools, against a 39-year-old male with no fixed address. Last Thursday morning, police followed a Nissan Pathfinder to Tamarack Lane. The vehicle stopped and two males ran from the truck into the woods. It was confirmed that the truck had been stolen. The police dog and handler tracked the suspects into the woods and located and arrested one of the men.

30 years of life long learning by Samantha Shirley-Urano editorial@mrtimes.com

Not many people may know about a school tucked away behind the Maple Ridge Christian Reformed Church on Dewdney Trunk near 203 Street, but the school for children with learning disabilities will be celebrating its 30th anniversary tomorrow. Over the years, James Cameron School has taught more than 1,000 children how to read, write and realize their potential, and it will be celebrating all their students and staff, both past and present, at the 30th Anniversary Celebration Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. The event will be at the Pitt Meadows Heritage Hall, at 12460 Harris Road. Tickets include a meal and they cost $20 for adults and $10 for children 10 years and under. There will be a silent auction, children’s activities and a reunion hour. James Cameron School currently has 56 students, but there are 23 staff members, allowing for a lot of one-on-one time with the students. Principal Olive Wagstaff has worked in her position for three years, and she started teaching at the school in 1990. Wagstaff said when she first came, the classes were held in portables. The school has had different faces through its lifetime, but now it is housed in an addition to the church,

which has been positive for the children. “It just feels good,” Wagstaff said. “People tell me it feels good, it has a calm feeling about it. They need structure and predictability. A quiet, calm atmosphere to work in is definitely great for them.” The founders of the school, Helen MacDonald and Irene Storteboom, started the school from nothing, and continue to nurture the school and its students today. Formerly the Haney Bingo Plex, the facility, which is scheduled to close down in three years, has been renovated to include a floor full of slot machines and a new entrance on its north side, according to Howard Blank, vice-president of communications for the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation. The centre is also offering

Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin has been hesitant to support gambling in the past. “In some ways, I kind of view it as indirect taxation,” he said. “I’m looking ahead three years when this facility is closed down and we have a new facility on 227 Street.” Daykin said a more modern centre would open up on 227 Street, leaving the Maple Ridge Community Gaming Centre as an opportunity for redevelopment, and higher and better

Daykin acknowledged problems with gaming and addiction, but he said gambling does have benefits for the community. “If they’re going to open a gaming facility, I’d rather have it in Maple Ridge than Pitt Meadows,” he said. Daykin said approximately $42 million has come out of the gaming facility over the last 20 years, and

Protesters plan anti-HST rally at MLA’s headquarters by Jeremy Shepherd

“It’s no secret I didn’t win by a very large margin,” Dalton said. Dalton defeated New Democratic Party candidate Mike Bocking by 68 votes in the 2009 election. Dalton said the NDP has their fingerprints on the MLA recall campaign. “The NDP is very much under the surface,” he said. Bell has stated the recall campaign has no party affiliation. Dalton pointed out the provincial government has already responded to the anti-HST petition by scheduling a referendum on the harmonized sales tax for Sept. 24, 2011. “We’ve made it much simpler and easier [for the HST] to be defeated,” he said. Dalton acknowledged the Liberal government did a “very poor job” of introducing the tax, but said that shouldn’t be a deciding factor. “I’m hoping that between now and the referendum the debate will be on the merit of the HST.”

Police are investigating an armed robbery of the Mac’s store located at 20318 Dewdney Trunk Road, in Maple Ridge. Shortly after midnight yesterday, two males entered the store. Each of the males was armed with a weapon. One of the men threatened the store employee, while the other went around the counter and took the cash from the till and some cigarettes. Both males left the store. No one was injured. The males are described as in their early twenties, one being Caucasian, and the other unknown, as his face was partly concealed. If anyone has any information regarding this robbery, they are asked to

contact the investigator, Const. Paul.

Neighbour confronts intruder

Last Tuesday, at approximately 2:30 p.m. the Ridge Meadows RCMP received a call from a citizen in the area of 138 Avenue and Silver Valley Road. This concerned citizen had observed a male exiting his neighbours’ front door. While on the phone with the police, the citizen confronted the male suspect as he was leaving. There was a brief physical altercation as the citizen attempted to detain the suspect for police. The suspect attempted to punch the citizen and threatened to harm him.

RALLY, From Page 4 Bell said she’s distributed anti-HST flyers to 130 businesses in Maple Ridge and Mission, most of them in downtown Maple Ridge. She said almost everyone agreed to put one of the flyers in their window, except for a few managers who declined due to corporate protocol. “I was pleasantly surprised, there are more supporters for the recall than there ever was for the HST petition,” she said. “I haven’t come across any strong Dalton supporters.” Dalton said some industries have benefited from the tax. “Since July 1, I know the film industry here has just been booming.”

The suspect got away on foot, leaving behind a motorcycle. As a result of the scuffle, the suspect left behind the backpack that he had carried out of the house. Not only did the backpack contain some of the stolen property from the house, but it also had documents with the alleged thief’s name on them. Police were able to locate the suspected thief within minutes.Crown has approved charges against Sean Joseph Bradbury. The approved charges are breach assault with an attempt to resist arrest, uttering threats, break and enter, and possession of stolen property over $5,000. He has been remanded into custody.

Dalton said a lot of people he runs into are disturbed by the recall campaign. “It’s a bit of a distraction,” he said. “I don’t want it to draw my efforts and time.” There have been 20 recall campaigns in B.C. since 1997, including two targeting Gordon Campbell. In 18 cases, the recall campaign failed because the petition was never submitted. The only successful B.C. recall campaign took place in 1998 when Paul Reitsma, MLA for Parksville Qualicum, resigned while the petition against him was being verified. The rally is a part of the Fight HST campaign, spearheaded by former premier Bill Vander Zalm.

Ian Young’s family is seeking damages resulting from his death in the drunk tank at the Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment in 2008. by Keith Fraser Postmedia Network

The family of Ian Alexander Young, who died after being held in police custody, is suing the RCMP and the paramedics who had earlier given medical treatment to the Maple Ridge man. On Oct. 17, 2008, paramedics were dispatched to the intersection of 115th Avenue and Waresley Street after receiving a 911 call that an individual was lying on the sidewalk with apparent head injuries. They found Young, 55, lying face up, his legs and lower back on the sidewalk and his upper torso on the road. They determined Young did not need to be taken to hospital and asked for help from RCMP, according to a statement of claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court. Police also determined that there was no need for Young to be hospitalized and he was taken to the drunk tank at the

Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment. Young, who had been drinking with friends, though not heavily, earlier in the evening, was left for the night in the cell. The following day he was found unresponsive in the cell. He was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster but died the next day as the result of a severe brain injury, says the lawsuit. “As a result of the negligence and/or gross negligence of the defendants and the subsequent death of Mr. Young, the plaintiffs have suffered and continue to suffer damage, loss and expense.” The plaintiffs are identified as Karen Elizabeth Young, the wife of Ian Young, and his infant daughter. They say they have also suffered physically, psychologically and emotionally and particulars of their damages, loss

and expense include funeral expenses, loss of employment income, childcare expenses and housekeeping expenses. General, special, aggravated, exemplary and/or punitive damages are being sought. In August, a coroner’s jury recommended that more needed to be done to look after people with head injuries while they were in police custody. Drunks who have had head trauma should be taken directly to hospital by ambulance workers, the jury found. Coroner Vincent Stancato ruled that the death of Young was an accident. Cause of death was determined to be a massive brain injury as a result of blunt-force trauma, with chronic alcoholism playing an underlying role. No statement of defence has been filed. A statement of claim contains allegations that have not been proven in court.

SD42 at forefront of place-based learning by Samantha Shirley-Urano editorial@mrtimes.com

Work on Maple Ridge’s proposed environmental school project continues, and the plan is to bring it to the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Board of Education in November. Clayton Maitland, the vice-principal of the program and former Yennadon elementary vice-principal, has high hopes for the future of the non-traditional school. The environmental school for children in kindergarten to Grade 7 could start as early as next year. Operating with a $1 million grant from Community-University Research Alliance, researchers from Simon Fraser University are currently developing a curriculum and plan to train teachers for the environmental school. They are partnering with many community organizations, including the Bell-Irving Hatchery, KEEPS and the Alouette River Management Society. Other partners include Katzie and Kwantlen First Nations, the municipal hall, the Maple Ridge Arts Gallery and the Maple Ridge Museum. “We could be a month at one place and a

couple weeks at another place,” Maitland said. “It’s totally different than a regular school and classroom environment.” It will be a big change from the regular classroom, replacing whiteboards and desks with nature and hands-on learning. “The project itself is unique,” Maitland said. “It’s trying to look at teaching and learning totally differently. We take people out into places here to learn, and to make the environment co-creator of knowledge ... makes it a little bit different.” Maitland said if you think back to some of your most memorable moments in school, they are often from an experience outside the normal classroom setting, like a field trip. He said students would be having that type of experience every day with the environmental school, which will enrich their learning and make it more meaningful. At each location teachers will strive to bring different subjects together, like history, math and science, instead of learning them each separately. Students will also learn how to apply their knowledge. See SD42, Page 8

Troy Landreville/TIMES SD42, From Page 7 “If you were to assess a child in a classroom and then look at it if we do the same learning outcomes, but in the natural world, then they can’t help but gain a better understanding,” Maitland said. If the project goes ahead, the goal is to have 50 students attend the school when it starts. Maitland said an online survey conducted showed there are many parents in support of the program, and the possibility of sending their children there. “I’ve had phone calls from Halifax and Saskatchewan from people who have heard about the program and are wondering when it starts, because they’re thinking about moving this way,” he said. “They might move to this location rather than another location because of the school, and that’s kind of encouraging.” The school, if approved, would also have the potential to help the community. “Our job now is to try to encourage the community, and our community partners, to

think of ideas how the research can support them and how we can maybe move research to a more ecological way of looking at our community.” Students and teachers at the environmental school would spend a lot of time outside, so part of the planning process is seeing where students would spend the colder days of the year. “We have a lot of partners that have facilities and we’re looking at ways to do those wet times at different places,” Maitland said. “If it’s a wet season, like it could be in January or February, then those are the best times for us to go into the Arts Centre. Those are the kind of scheduling things we’re working out. If we’re studying governance, we might have the ability to go to the longhouse at Katzie.” They will also try to use structures at the organizations they visit, like CEED, ARMS and the Bell-Irving Hatchery. “We’re looking at purchasing things like yurts for shelter,” Maitland said. “But most people can spend most of the time outside.”

Group strives for barrier free communities CAN is working to make sure society is inclusive of all members. by Samantha Shirley-Urano editorial@mrtimes.com

It can be a struggle for people with disabilities to get the services and inclusion in society they desire, but one community organization is trying to make sure the voices of these people are heard. Citizens for Accessible Neighbourhoods – CAN – an organization in the Lower Mainland that supports full inclusion in communities, is holding its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Fraser Room of the Maple Ridge Library at 13022470 Dewdney Trunk Road. “It’s about improving things so we can support full inclusion within communities, whether it’s sport and recreational programs or access to information, or just creating barrier-free communities,” said Heather McCain, executive director of Citizens for Accessible Neighbourhoods and a resident of Maple Ridge until three years ago. McCain said one of the reasons she moved to Vancouver from Maple Ridge was because of the scarcity of accessible housing here.

“Everybody wins when a community is barrier-free, because it’s not just for people with disabilities. It’s for seniors; it’s for people with strollers. We’ve had some people with high heels say it’s so much easier when things are accessible. Not having the cobblestone or bricks helps a lot of people.” McCain said C.A.N. started five years ago to be a mouthpiece for people’s concerns. “They don’t necessarily have the ability to get out into the community, so the way we structured the organization is that they would contact me about issues and then I would be the one who would either contact the businesses, or TransLink, or whoever needed to be contacted and then follow up,” McCain said. At the AGM on Wednesday, C.A.N. will present their provincial plan, which they will begin implementing in January. Members of the organization will vote and be able to give their input, but the general public is also welcome to attend. Successes from the past year will be reported on at the AGM, directors of the society will be elected and financial statements from the fiscal year ending July 31, 2010, will be received. For more information about the society and resources for inclusion of people with disabilities, visit canbc.org.

Man caught driving while banned

Police are investigating and will be forwarding charges against a Maple Ridge man for driving while prohibited. Last Tuesday, at about 11:11 a.m., police were patrolling

in the area of 224 Street and Brown Avenue, when the licence plate on a green Ford was checked. The driver was found to be the subject of a driving prohibition as

a result of the new drinking and driving legislation. He will be facing charges of prohibited driving as well as having his vehicle towed and impounded for seven days.

❚ Our View

Winter safety good for all Despite the uncharacteristically warm autumn we’ve enjoyed this year, winter is drawing inexorably near, and we’re bound to be heading for colder times. If you’ve taken a trip into northern or interior parts of the province in the past week or so, you already know what lies ahead. But then, if you’re an adult and have lived anywhere in Canada for a few years, you should have an idea that good weather never lasts forever. If you haven’t already prepared your vehicle – and yourself – for the winter weather ahead, now is a good time to get started. Ensuring you have adequate traction in case it snows isn’t just something to do to ensure you get where you are going. Your poor traction can be dangerous for vehicles around you, not to mention that you will likely slow or impede the progress of other motorists who have taken appropriate measures to prepare for winter. In that light, not being prepared turns out to be pretty selfish, as well as dangerous. So get a proper set of snow tires. Sure, out here on the “Wet Coast” we might escape with only a few inches of snow just a few times over the course of the season… but we can also host occasional snowstorms that dump a half metre on us overnight. Remember the winter of 2008/09? Most folks don’t realize that, as well as providing cold-weather traction, snow tires can actually increase stopping power by 25 per cent. That can translate into a considerable reduction in distance when the chips – and the snowflakes – are down. Again for comfort as well as safety, get your vehicle set up for the cold weather ahead – you really don’t want to stall out on a backroad on a cold, cold night. Then there are the regular items you need to keep checked out throughout the year: lights, belts, hoses, battery condition, and all the fluid levels – don’t forget the windshield washer fluid. And while you’re at it, keep yourself in condition, too. If you don’t care about the other people on the road, think of yourself… and the new laws in B.C. that stiffen the penalties for speeding and drunk driving. When on the roads this winter, keep your mind on what you’re doing. Winter is a lot easier to take when you make it through alive.

One-acre lots should be allowed in Maple Ridge Editor:

I, for one, do not oppose the development of thirteen one-acre lots at 264th Street, south of 124th Ave. I have read that Councillor Craig Speirs believes development will cause terrible sprawl. My understanding is that he opposes sprawl of any kind or is he in favour of selective sprawl. Sure we receive less tax revenue from these one acre lots but I’m sure that the majority of Council supports mixed development of which one acre lots would constitute the minority. What bothers me are the social theorists and urban planning gurus that would have us all living in condominiums and townhouses in the downtown core with neighbours staring in our bathroom windows and breathing rarified air on Cloud 9. Notice that most of these proponents live comfortably in single detached homes but tell us we should “build up” not out. I’m for a little choice and balance; if an individual can afford a one acre lot all the power to him. The argument that taxpayers in more densely populated areas will be subsidizing these oneacre lots is arguable because based on the law of supply

and demand you will likely see mixed development. However come to think of it you’d think that the “vanguard of socialism” would support subsidization as part of the socialist philosophy Grover Telford Maple Ridge

receiving fewer hours, and so are all of my co-workers. Poverty is a major issue in B.C. due to high living costs and ridiculous sales taxes and now the only industry that was considered safe has taken a major blow. Considering how much money liquor sales bring in for not only employees but for the government as well, it seems to be counterproductive to make it impossible to drink. Something needs to be done to save a once thriving industry. Try raising the legal drinking age or the legal age to drive. As is stands now, a person can legally pack a car full of their friends and legally drink at the exact same age. Maybe that’s the problem. Maybe the middle-aged couple going out for dinner and a glass of wine isn’t the issue here. And maybe, just maybe, they shouldn’t be punished for something that our government has overlooked. Liquor stores, pubs suffer under new law Editor: I just wanted to voice a few concerns I have with the new legal alcohol limit. Though I do think it is a great idea to crack down and fight back against drunk driving, I think this might be taking it a little too far. The majority of drunk drivers are young adults and it seems to me that it is unfair to be condemning everyone. As a driver this does not affect me at all. I only just received my learner’s license and I am all but too happy to have no alcohol at all before getting behind the wheel. My concern lies with the pubs and liquor stores that are being greatly affected by this new law. As an employee of a liquor store, I have seen a major change in volume since this new law has taken effect. I have also seen a major change in my pay cheque. Due to fewer customers, I am

highlights key problems in Canadian politics. People have short memories and believe bluster when they don’t understand the facts. Perhaps people should read up on Mr. Vander Zalm. Let us not forget it was his government that gave us the property transfer tax – even the GST/ HST only applies once. The tax became such a fantastic cash cow that no government since has eliminated it. Most people – salaried or pensioned – are on fixed income if you think about it. None of us ever want things to be more expensive. But consider the errors in Wayne’s letter. The key issue most of the naysayers seem to forget/ignore is that this tax replaced another tax. The rate is the same. Sure a few new things are taxed at the full rate where they were only taxed with GST before, but there are other things that are no longer taxed. Taxes that were reduced include hotels, liquor in restaurants, energy used by business (electricity and gas), battery fees for car batteries, rental vehicle tax, varied tax rates on cars. Not to mention the lower operating costs generated by input tax credits (which allow businesses to reduce prices or delay increases or

If we could just get people to remember the mistakes of the past, and to really understand the current situation we might make some progress. I’m not defending the Liberals or the way they brought the tax in. But it was the right thing to do and it’s done. The money from the feds is spent, and the businesses have moved on. Maybe true, but it doesn’t affect ice-cream you buy at the grocery though, and I’ve seen a number of restaurants starting to advertise HST discounts/new prices, so maybe the economists were right? Sixty-nine cents for a sandwich? Working backwards, that may mean the sandwich was $5.75. If that is the case, really the additional tax is the difference of the GST and the HST – 40 cents. As for the home repairs, unless the contractors were doing something shifty, they always would have paid PST and GST on their source materials. If they were using their PST number to reduce PST at purchase they should have been charging PST and GST on the sale. This

more like a small lake. The little guy overloaded on chocolate and other treats, and subsequently christened our new home in his own special way. I quickly shuffled up the stairs, leaned my head around the wall and into the kitchen where the ladies were drinking wine, and said, “I found him.” Making eye contact with his mom, as well as my wife, I asked, “Umm... can you guys come downstairs?” A couple of hours of frantic cleaning followed. My wife, with the help of the boy’s mom, did the bulk of the dirty work. Once the chunks of puke swirled into the toilet bowl and washed down the sink, and with the yellowand-pink-stained towels safely out of my sight and rolling around in the washer, I went to work, spraying and scrubbing from about midnight into the wee hours of the morning. For the next month, no matter how much cleaner and Febreze we soaked into the carpet, that faint-yet-pervasive sour odour lingered. The moment I started to set foot downstairs, I was reminded of what has become known as “the housewarming incident.” Less than two months after the party, my wife and I found out she was pregnant with our first child. The news was simultaneously exhilarating and terrifying. I look back at that night now as a view into my future. It was almost as though the little fella knew what was coming, and wanted to give my wife and me a preview of what’s in store. From my very — and I mean very — limited

I cling to the faint hope that our little guy/girl will get over that pesky “pooping and peeing in my pants” phase after, oh, about two months. Maybe then he/she can give me a hand gesture or a wink, or some kind of sign so I can hurriedly carry him/her to the bathroom, and hold him/ her under his/her arms over the toilet where he/she will do his business, saving me the yucky cleanup duties. Okay, obviously that’s asking way, way, way too much — right? If I had a child like that, we’d be touring the late night talk show circuit. I’ve been told that when

If your doctor says that your cholesterol is too high and that you had double the chance of developing heart disease, would you do something about it? One certainly would. It is discovered that the incidence of heart disease was twice as high for people with periodontal disease. There is found to be a direct relation between heart disease and gum disease. Gum disease or periodontal disease affects the bone that holds your tooth along with the gums. New findings have emerged to explain how and why the bacteria that cause gum disease can increase the risk of heart disease. Check your oral hygiene twice a year by a hygienist, monitored by a dentist. After all, your teeth are supposed to last you your lifetime.

it’s your own child, changing diapers ain’t so bad — once you get past the initial gag reflex. But my future child won’t be leaving little mushy Raisinettes behind. I absolutely know this comes with the territory. After all, raising a baby isn’t for the weak of stomach, or faint of heart for that matter, which leads me to my next point. My wife and I are in full preparation mode for our pint-sized roommate, scheduled to arrive sometime around Christmas. Neither of us are spring chickens — actually, we’re more like a crotchety rooster and an old hen. We are between the ages of 35 and 42. For the sake of my marriage, let’s leave it at that. The fact we’re “new/old” parents adds to the challenge of child-rearing and the sleep deprivation that apparently comes with it. When he/she gets old enough to waddle, then run, will I be fit enough to keep up with him/her? So, to prepare, I have embarked upon quite an intense training regimen. I switched to light beer; I only eat one bowl of potato chips per night instead of three; and I’ve cut back my pizza intake to five slices per sitting, as opposed to my usual seven. I also plan on scheduling that “special” doctor’s appointment which men in their late 30s and early 40s know oh-so-well, and usually dread. You know the one — where you drop your boxers, spread your legs, quietly say a little prayer to yourself, and then search the doctor’s office wall for a degree or any other sign of legitimacy. In all seriousness, my wife doesn’t plan on raising our child alone. She wants me around as the years go by, and for that to happen, I made a promise to her to start taking better care of myself.

Healthy sleep makes for happy kids Instead give them a small, healthy snack to tide them over the several hours of sleep they will get.” What your children do before bed is linked to how long it takes them to reach sleep. DiNicolo explains, “Stimulating activities such as watching TV or playing video games right before

bed have been linked to the increase in the amount of time it takes for children to fall asleep. These activities should be stopped at least an hour before bedtime.” DiNicolo adds that getting our children into a bedtime routine, no matter how old they are, can signal the mind and body that sleep is

coming soon. “This can include a bath, putting pyjamas on, eating a light snack or reading a book,” she suggests. “And choose an early bedtime so your kids aren’t pushed into overtiredness, which makes falling asleep and staying asleep much more difficult.”

Sleep. Without enough of it, your child may have difficulty functioning throughout the day, concentrating at school and then settling down at night again. Sleep is how your child’s body recharges and prepares itself for the activities of the following day. So how do you know if your child is not getting enough? Sleep consultant Crystal DiNicolo says, “Signs that your child isn’t getting enough sleep may include moodiness, irritability, behavioural problems, lack of concentration or motivation, hyperactivity at bedtime and clumsiness.” She also adds that if you notice that your child wakes up frequently in the night or too early in the morning, or has an inability to cope with stress, sleep deprivation may be the culprit. According to DiNicolo, parents can follow some general guidelines when it comes to how much sleep is enough. Per night, children aged three to five should be getting 11 to 13 hours; kids from five to 12 should get 10 to 12 hours; and 12- to 18year-olds should aim for nine to 10 hours. If you suspect your child isn’t getting enough sleep, a number of factors may be involved, from nutrition to sleep environment to bedtime routine. Diana Steele, registered dietitian and owner of Eating for Energy, says there is a correlation between what a child eats and his/her quality of sleep afterwards, and what he/she eats can make the difference. “If the food [you give your child just before bedtime] is high in protein, it can take a while to digest,” Steele says, giving an example. “Proteins release amino acids into the blood stream, which isn’t good for sleep.” She suggests carbohydrates are better than protein for a pre-bedtime snack, but parents should make sure it is not sugary (sugar can cause a blood sugar crash and trigger crankiness, which can make sleep difficult) and does not contain artificial colouring (which Steele says have been linked to ADHD and other behavioral problems). She suggests whole-grain cereal and milk, toast and peanut butter or a little jam, or yogurt and fruit. Why? “Because when carbohydrates are digested, serotonins are released which turn into melatonin, which

helps you sleep,” Steele explains. Timing is important too, Steele says. Don’t send your child to bed 30 minutes after a big dinner, but don’t send him/her to sleep hungry either.

Creation, an intimate portrain of 19th century naturalist Charles Darwin, screens at the ACT next Monday by Jeremy Shepherd editorial@mrtimes.com

“You have killed God,” a colleague congratulates Charles Darwin. “I for one say good riddance to the vindictive old bugger.” Creation is a beautifully shot, hauntingly scored movie that focuses on the tension between a theory that leaves no room for God and the theorist’s need for faith, if not religion. Creation screens at the ACT this Monday. The movie portrays Darwin, the author of Origin of Species, tracing the evolution of creatures over millions of years, noting the most miniscule changes, but his research seems to chip away at both his faith and his health. Unlike many overly ambitious bio-pics, Creation looks at only a few years of Darwin’s life, the writing of his powerful and controversial book, his

relationship with his wife, his children and Annie, his favourite daughter. Darwin is played by Paul Bettany, an English actor probably best known for being Russell Crowe’s real and imaginary sidekick in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, and A Beautiful Mind. Darwin lives in the past, both for the purposes of studying creatures like an ancient, elephantsized sloth in what is now Argentina, and for speaking to his deceased daughter, who seems to be his soul, his conscience, and an impossibly idealized relationship. Annie always asks the right questions, always wants to hear another story and looks at her father adoringly. The relationship is moving even as we wonder if Darwin’s time wouldn’t be better spent with one of his living children. A reverend punishes Annie over a dispute about the existence of dinosaurs,

prompting Darwin to begin jettisoning his faith, a process he likens to the raising of a continent. Darwin credits the church for keeping society together, but the scientist is conspicuously silent when the church choir belts out a hymn, and he can’t bear to endure a sermon about man’s dominion over all crawling creatures of the Earth. Darwin is both convincing and sympathetic when he vents about the happiness deficit inherent in the miniscule number of trout eggs that hatch amid the majority that are doomed. As his depression over his daughter worsens and calls for him to finish his book increase, sickness overtakes Darwin. His hand shakes like a bad con man and he takes on the gaunt, sickly appearance of a stockbroker after a night of binge drinking. See DARWIN, Page 36

❚ Community Public Art

Mural blossoms on 227 Street A mural is taking shape on a building at 11910 227 Street, which houses a day program of the Ridge Meadows Association for Community Living. The mural, made with spray paint and handpainted with paintbrushes, will hopefully be finished tomorrow. A lunch is planned next Wednesday to celebrate the completion of the project. In March of this year, the association’s Self Advocate Group received a grant from the British Columbia Association for Community Living. Self Advocates Seeding Innovation, a project that funds self-advocates’ projects across the province, has goals to strengthen selfadvocacy networks, bring people together for support and sharing ideas, organize training and make positive change in community. Self Advocates of Maple Ridge applied for a grant to paint a mural in the community in the hope of bringing together groups with different abilities to create a work of art all can

enjoy. S.A.M. chose the building to be their canvas, with the support of building owner Brian Dodsworth. The Self Advocate Group approached Jessica Bailuk, a local artist, and volunteer Rebecca VanDeKeere to design the mural. Some of the difficulties the group has faced include how to paint on a high building and how the mural would look on such a large scale. The group began looking around the community at some of the recent murals they admired, and the name they kept seeing was Kups. After some research the group found the artist’s name — Kris Kupskay. S.A.M. invited Kupskay to a meeting to see their mural and explain their project goal. With a budget of only $2,500, they didn’t think they would be able to hire Kupskay, but thought he might be able to give the group some advice on how to make their project come to life. Kupskay turned out to be the group’s shining hero, volunteering his time and expertise to bring out

Jessica Bailuk touches up part of a mural on a building at the 11910 227th Street. Bailuk, who came up with the original design for the mural, has had help from artist Kris Kupskay on the project. The artwork is being done for the Ridge Meadows Association for Community Living Self Advocate Group.

the abilities of everyone who wished to try their hand at spray painting. RMACL and BCACL will host a Community Living Month lunch with music and food next Wednesday, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., to celebrate the completion. The lunch will be at 11910 227 Street, with tents set up in case of rain. This project has strengthened the community in such a positive way. Examples of Kupskay’s work can be found at thehiddenagendaprojects. com.

War and remembrance at local library World War I, see Nathan Greenfield’s Baptism of Fire: The Second Battle of Ypres and the Forging of Canada, April 1915 (2007), Mark Zuehlke’s Brave Battalion: The Remarkable Saga of the 16th Battalion (Canadian Scottish) In the First World War (2008) or Tim Cook’s two-volume set, At the Sharp End: Canadians Fighting The Great War, 1914-1916 (2007) and Shock Troops: Canadians Fighting the Great War, 19171918 (2008). Or borrow a DVD on the topic: In Front Lines (2008), the real-life correspondence of World War I soldiers and medical staff is read over a backdrop of archival footage; Brian McKenna’s The Great War (2007) re-enacts Canada’s role in World War I, with descendents of WWI participants in the film’s important roles (Justin Trudeau, for example, plays Talbot Papineau); the CBC’s Vimy (2007) commemorates Canada’s definitive battle of World War I on its 90th anniversary. Canada’s First World War accomplishments are equally well addressed in the juvenile section with books like A Nation Is Born: World War I and Independence, 1910/1929 (2006) by Sheila Nelson and Hugh Brewster’s At Vimy Ridge: Canada’s Greatest World War I Victory

(2006). Looking beyond the scope of the First World War, FVRL’s collection of novels, biographies, documentaries and other works of nonfiction on war and conflict is wide ranging; from the Napoleonic Wars to the struggle in Afghanistan, the war in Vietnam to South African Apartheid, the War of 1812 to the Rwandan genocide, your library will have something to suit every interest. FVRL also carries a long list of war movies on DVD. Take some time this fall to revisit old favourites, like The Dirty Dozen, All Quiet on the Western Front, or David O. Selznick’s 1957 remake of A Farewell to Arms. Or pick modern classics like Gallipoli, Saving Private Ryan, Apocalypse Now, Braveheart or Das Boot. More recent additions to our collection include Valkyrie, Charlie Wilson’s War, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Men Who Stare at Goats, Brothers, Dear John, The Hurt Locker, Paul Gross’s Passchendaele, and Shake Hands with the Devil, a feature film based on Lieutenant General Romeo Dallaire’s account of his ill-fated UN peacekeeping mission to Rwanda. November 11 is approaching, and it will be almost impossible in the coming weeks to avoid the disturbing but undeniably fascinating topic of war. War is rousing stuff, and it has been the subject of countless movies, television series, documentaries and books for all ages, both fiction and non-fiction, many of them available through your local library. To learn more about the day itself - the day that marked the end of World War I, and the day we commemorate those who died in that war and in others - look for Eleventh Month, Eleventh Day, Eleventh Hour: Armistice Day, 1918: World War I and Its Violent Climax, by Joseph E. Persico (2004 - also available on CD Book) or The Greatest Day in History: How, on the Eleventh Hour of the Eleventh Day of the Eleventh Month, the First World War Finally Came to an End, by Nicholas Best (2008). Juvenile readers should pick up Remembrance Day (2003) by Jill Foran, and younger children will enjoy Ron Lightburn’s vibrant illustrations in A Poppy is to Remember (2004) by Heather Patterson. Thrills and chills at Ghost Ridge Ghost Ridge is fun for the whole family, including those who don’t want a “jolt.” by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com

NO LONGER AT

There are those who like to be jump-out-of-your-shoes scared; then there are those who like to be just a little creeped out. This year’s Ghost Ridge fundraiser caters to both types. The annual haunted house will be on at the Albion Fairgrounds this weekend (Oct. 22-23) and next (Oct. 28-30).

A huge change for the event is there will not be a separate Kids Ghost Ridge. The loss of the “not so scary” will be replaced with the early opening of the Ghost Ridge Haunted House, which will allow children as well as folks that don’t enjoy the fear factor to visit Ghost Ridge. Between 5 and 6 p.m., the haunted house will have no dimming of lights, no fear of turning a corner, and no costumed scary actors unexpectedly jumping out. The early display is tailormade for for the younger set, and for adults who don’t feel like towing a defibrillator around with them during

Volunteer Sarah Parsons held the “severed” head of an unfortunate “victim,” and got up close and personal with a ghostly face to help promote Ghost Ridge 2010, which takes place this weekend and next. Troy Landreville/TIMES their visit. There will be one actor in each set in a position of security only. For the visitors who crave

the scare, scream, and heart thumping, the theme is “The After Death.” It all starts in a funeral home and then takes you

through what each group has interpreted as the worse kind of hell. See GHOST, Page 26

LIBRARY, From Page 23 On Thursday, November 4, Maple Ridge Public Library will host multiaward-winning Canadian writer Hugh Brewster, author of several popular and meticulously researched works of children’s historical fiction and non-fiction, many of them dealing with World War I and World War II. Brewster will discuss his latest work, Prisoner of Dieppe, part of Scholastic’s new I Am Canada series. This absorbing historical novel follows a group of young Canadian soldiers as they engage in the World War II Allied raid on Dieppe – an operation that cost many Canadian lives – and are captured by German forces. The program, to be held in the second-floor teen area at 1 p.m., is intended for children in Grades 5 to 7, but may be of interest to teens and adults as well. To register, please contact the library at 467-7417. There are many other programs and events taking place in the Maple Ridge Library this fall, including Pajama Storytimes from now until Nov. 26, the Wacky Wednesday Pumpkin Painting Contest on Oct. 27, Friday Fun Club every Friday in November, Teen Movie Night on Nov. 3, Morris as Elvis on Nov. 18, and the continuation of Essential Foreign Films. And if you’re free on Oct. 26, drop by the library between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. for customer appreciation day snacks. Jo-Ann Sleiman is the Information Services Librarian at the Maple Ridge Public Library

Thanks to the generosity of the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau, about 100 costumes are up for grabs. Each child will be given a numbered ticket and the winning numbers will posted at the exit door. All winners will be asked to go to a waiting area opposite the Maple Ridge Lions Club Kitchen and pick out the costume of their choice. To accommodate all members of the family, the waiting and activity area has been set up. It is situated in the exhibition building opposite the Lions Club Kitchen. It is offered to provide an area where family members who either have already visited the haunted house and are waiting for other members to go through,

Carrier of the week

or have children who just simply don’t want to go through. There will be coloring and some activities offered by the Maple Ridge Lions to raise funds for the fireworks. On Saturday, Oct. 30, Mad Science will be featuring a free show. As in previous years the Maple Ridge Lions will be taking food orders at the main kitchen. Profits from food sales assist with the fireworks costs. As well, the Maple Ridge Fire Department and Maple Ridge Lions have joined forces to feature a firework display. Admission prices are $ 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. each day, and $5 for children during “non-scary hour” from 5 to 6 p.m.

The seven deadly sins, a chilling water feature and a deadly forest are just a few of the sets created at the fairgrounds. “We have a really good reputation, now, for being really, really scary,” Ghost Ridge committee member Lorraine Bates said. “But there are people who really want to enjoy the creativity of the volunteers but they don’t want to be scared. It’s not just little kids; there are adults who won’t go into a haunted house. It’s a family event. We want to make sure all members of the family can come down and have a good time.” Four non-profit groups have been working on design and construction since September. Nobody is paid on this project and all profits will be donated to the four local non-profit groups. The 2010 groups are: • the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Agricultural Association; • the Society for Creative Anachronism – Medieval Group; • Millennium Players – Theatrical Group, and

• the Ridge Canoe and Kayak Club. “The haunted house is a unique project in the sense that the people who are the recipients of the money are the people who are building it,” Bates said. “So, if you want the money, it’s there but this is what you have to do. It’s a big commitment.” Ghost Ridge has the potential of raising up to $4,000, per group. “It’s nice because all the groups have had their funding cut, so these sort of projects are even more important now than they were a year ago,” Bates said. This weekend, tonight and Saturday, each child who visits Ghost Ridge will have the opportunity to win a Halloween costume.

WANT TO RECYCLE YOUR UNWANTED ELECTRONICS? Here’s where you can recycle them safely and free of charge in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge:

Pitt Meadows Bottle & Return-It Depot 19090 Lougheed Highway, Pitt Meadows (604) 465-2866

Ridge Meadows Recycling 10092 – 236th Street, Maple Ridge (604) 463-5545

WHAT IS THE ELECTRONICS STEWARDSHIP ASSOCIATION OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (ESABC) PROGRAM? ESABC is a not-for-profit extended producer responsibility program set up by the producers and retailers of electronics in British Columbia to provide a province wide recycling system for unwanted electronics.

ISN’T IT IMPORTANT TO REUSE BEFORE RECYCLING? While the program is designed to manage unwanted electronic products that have exhausted their reuse potential, we strongly encourage users to first reuse their products. If you choose to donate to a charity, make sure you have backed up your data and wiped your drives clean prior to donation.

WHAT ARE THE ACCEPTABLE ELECTRONIC ITEMS INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM? Effective July 1, 2010, the following items can be recycled free of charge at any Encorp Return-It Electronics™ Collection Site: display devices, desktop computers, portable computers, computer peripherals, computer scanners, printers and fax machines, non-cellular phones and answering machines, vehicle audio and video systems (aftermarket), home audio and video systems, and personal or portable audio and video systems.

HOW ARE ELECTRONICS RECYCLED? Electronics collected for recycling are sent to approved primary recyclers in North America. They are broken down using various manual and mechanical processes. Products are separated into their individual components for recovery. Through a variety of refining and smelting processes, the materials reclaimed from unwanted electronics are used as raw materials in the manufacturing of new products.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: A month of mystery, of psychological, financial and sexual depths awaits you. You might be “tied to” another’s finances, might invest, or take on a mortgage or other large debt. The end result will be a change in your lifestyle. This change might occur through other avenues also: health adjustments, sexual involvements (or pregnancy) etc. It’s a time of commitment and consequence. It’s also, to some degree, a time of karma – I hope you’ve been good! Research, intuition and subconscious promptings aid you. Chase money, shop early Sunday. Thursday to Saturday are sexy, romantic! Taurus April 20-May 20: The weeks ahead feature relationships – of all stripes, from marriage and business partnerships, to agreements, contracts, negotiations, dealings with the public, and the bevy of new relationships that relocation would entail. You are no longer (as in recent weeks) meeting friction and challenge from others. Now forward (to January) most dealings and links become unusually affectionate and gracious. Everyone wants to please – you included! It’s likely that a former bond, an “ex” or a former opportunity (relocation, business, public dealings, etc.) will loom large. Talk it up, Thursday. Gemini May 21-June 20: The next few weeks bring drudgery, chores, health concerns, machinery repairs/purchases and increased dependents’ needs. All these detracted from the pleasures of the last few weeks. So now the cosmos balances: during this “drudgery month” your chores will tend to be light and enjoyable, co-workers will be affectionate (or at least nice), dependents reward you and your health will improve...unless you have a sugar-related problem – e.g., diabetes. (If so, be vigilant through January.) Relationships grow fiery yet hopeful. Love could arise from an argument (and vice versa).

CALYPSO COURT 1030 - 5th Ave, New West Near Transportation & Douglas College. Well Managed Building.

Cancer June 21-July 22: The month ahead features romance, pleasure, speculation, creativity, beauty and charming kids. You’ll ride a winning streak! These enjoyable matters were sprinkled through September and October, but now they flower more fully. A contentious, intense tone yields to a softer, affectionate “dalliance” atmosphere. An old flame might appear, if he/she has not already done so in the last two weeks. Sunday’s for fun, social delights. Retreat to rest, plan Monday/Tuesday. Your energy, magnetism and effectiveness soar Wednesday p.m. to Friday – go out, NOT within! Money caution Saturday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The weeks ahead revolve around home, kids, property, security, soul, nutrition and Mother Nature. The friction that sandpapered these areas in recent weeks will fade – for two years. Now to January, affection fills your home. You’ll be charmed and charming! It’s a splendid time to decorate, vacation, take the kids to the pumpkin patch, etc. If you’re single, a romantic streak begins to wind through your days. If married, the boudoir brightens. If parenting, be gentle – you might push sports, adventure, too hard. Be ambitious Sunday. Happiness, hopes, plans and popularity Monday/ Tuesday! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Communications, paperwork, details, errands, short trips, siblings and casual acquaintances fill the weeks ahead. Much of this continues September/October’s trends, but in bigger, luckier ways. The focus of communications changes from sex, finances, mutual property, big changes, power plays, secrets, to something lighter, more gracious: affection/sensuality, earnings instead of assets, compromise instead of power plays, etc. Less is at stake, and that buoys your heart! Still, you’ll be short-tempered on the home front to early December: make peace! Social joys Wednesday-Friday!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Chase money during the weeks ahead. Buy/sell, cultivate new clients, seek a pay raise, etc. Also focus on, and complete, major tasks or health fixes. Putting them off would interfere with the lucky opportunities and relationship potentials of 2011. To late January, your work scene features intensity, longer hours and creativity – it’s one of the more interesting things in your life, until 2011.“Heavy” money issues enter Sunday (mortgage, investment, etc.) – be calm, even passive. Wisdom, gentle love early week. Ambitious wishes furthered Thursday/Friday, not before. A happy weekend! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Weariness ends – your energy, charisma and effectiveness rise – especially in money areas. For the next six weeks, increased money will come from work or health events, perhaps from overtime hours, sales. Though more money comes, strictly beware a simultaneous, unconscious need to overspend. You could purchase machinery or repairs – haggle, go slow, don’t “spend automatically.” A relationship puzzles you Sunday (perhaps because it’s going to end soon). Mysteries, hidden “treasure,” sexual lures fill Monday/Tuesday. Sweet, gentle love Wednesday-Friday. Be ambitious Saturday. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Rest through late November. Contemplate, plan, be charitable and spiritual, connect with institutions, government agencies. All these proceed splendidly, but other, more hectic pursuits meet headwinds, mainly because your energy and charisma are low. People don’t want to follow your lead right now. This could be a problem, because you’re feeling more determined, assertive and impatient than usual. Dicey combination! Turn that drive into creative pursuits. Indulge yourself with a little pleasure to defuse your ferocity. Valuable secrets surface Wednesday-Friday – pounce Thursday p.m.!

Oct. 24 - Oct. 30 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: A month of happiness stretches before you! Your popularity will rise. Social delights, optimism, bright future plans and group activities await. A light flirtation could occur – it could be more than that if you meet in a group. Sunday accents romance.Tackle chores Monday to Wednesday morning. Relationships loom large Wednesday noon to Friday eve. There’s a disappointment or obstacle here Thursday morning, but otherwise these few days offer success in negotiations, agreements, love, partnerships, meeting or serving the public. Be open, other-oriented and eager! Mysteries, Saturday. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: The weeks ahead luckily feature ambition, career, prestige relationships and your reputation. Climb the ladder, boost your position in the world! Bosses, parents and higher-ups will (by Thursday onward) drop the impatience and temperament of the last two months. They will strongly favour you now into next January: you’ll be surprised at how graciously you and your proposals are received. Travel and socializing issue a siren song for six weeks – enjoy, but don’t be overly distracted. Romance, creative urges and pleasure call you Monday/Tuesday. Tackle work after Thursday morning, not before. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Understanding replaces mystery, light replaces dark, a philosophical attitude supplants lust. You grow more calm and compassionate. You see your future more clearly, making this and the next few weeks a splendid time to make life-affecting decisions. You might wed, or meet an important love, in the few months ahead. Travel, read, communicate Sunday. Be near home or in contact with family – or pursue security, property goals – Monday/Tuesday. Romance, a creative surge or speculative urge comes Wednesday to Friday – it’s a trap to Thursday morning, succeeds after. Chores Saturday! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

Pumpkin Cross race set for Sunday It’s time for enthusiasts and amateurs alike to dust off their witch hats and pull out their bicycles in preparation for this weekend’s Pumpkin Cross race. The fourth annual Halloweenthemed cyclocross race, presented by Local Ride Bike Shop, will be held at the Maple Ridge Equestrian Centre Sunday. “After three years of successful Pumpkin Crosses behind us, we can guarantee the 2010 edition will be better than ever,” said race organizer Barry Lyster. “As usual, we’re encouraging competitors to wear costumes and we will be awarding prizes for the best one. We also give a cash bonus to any rider who wins his or her category in costume.” Creative costumes will give competitors a leg up on the competition, but they can make tackling the course’s obstacles difficult — like barriers, run-ups, sand, tight corners, slick grass and roots. Pumpkin Cross is open to all ages and all levels of riders. There will be a free kids race, a $10 U17 youth race, beginner races, and an open women’s category with separate prizes for category three and four women. Racing begins at 11:00 am. “This cyclocross course is short, fast, and filled with obstacles. Throw in crazy costumes and some of the province’s fastest racers, and it’s guaranteed to be a good time for everyone,” said Lyster. The highlight will be the elite men’s and open women’s races, featuring the top cyclocross riders in B.C. vying for the B.C. Cup title. Registration for the B.C. Cup event is available online at www. karelo.com until 8 p.m. on Saturday and on site at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. To avoid a late fee, pre-registration is recommended. Registration closes 30 minutes prior to each race start. For more information, go to www. localride.ca and click on Races to follow the links to Pumpkin Cross.

The Meadow Ridge Knights Atom Blue team suffered its first loss of the season last Saturday as the Abbotsford Falcons defeated them 22-12. The loss dropped the team out of a tie for first place. The Knights had another strong game on offence from Kade Cote and Brayden Hamilton, while Dryden Pollon and Blake Alford lead a tight Knights defence. The Atom Blue Knights play North Langley at McLeod Athletic Park, on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Atom Gold Knights dominated the North Langley Bears last Saturday with a 58-0 shutout. Tyler Spencer, Cody Hogarth, Michael Howarth and Liam Teboekhorst each scored touchdowns. The Gold Knights’ win was due to defensive players including Nickolas Lienhaas, Darius Joseph, Nicholas Stroud and Nico Zolliker, who smothered the Bears’ running attack. Gold will play Chilliwack Blue Atom at Townsend Park, Saturday at 11 a.m. The Junior Bantam Knights had little to celebrate in last Saturday’s game as the Chilliwack Giants scored early and often, defeating the Knights 56-6. The Knights shutout the Bears, 24-0. Mitch Thompson/TIMES had key blocks and Brian Dongalen scored the Knights only touchdown. The Junior Bantam Knights are at McLeod Athletic Park in North Langley Saturday for a must-win game if the team hopes to keep flickering playoff hopes alive. The Knights play at 2:30 p.m.

Three Maple Ridge boys excelled in local mini versions of Nascar races this year. Cody Hogarth, 8, Cole Slater, 8, and Caleb Orieux, 7, finished in the top four in points in the quarter midget racing Jr. Honda division. The boys race with the Langley Quarter Midget Association in Aldergrove, where children start racing at the age of five and go to 16 years old. Bill Slater, Cole Slater’s father, said the sport has brought their family together. Cole started racing when he was six years old, and his 5-year-old brother races in the novice class. Slater and his wife serves as the boys’ pit crew. “It was something different from the alternative of hockey,” Slater said. “It’s a good summer sport for the kids to be involved in. It kind of brings the family together

Nanaimo on Sunday. The Meadow Ridge peewee team scored the fourth Knights shutout of the weekend last Saturday, beating Chilliwack Blue peewee 12-0. The peewee boys play North Langley Saturday at McLeod Athletic Park at 12:45 p.m. as a team; we all work together.” According to the Langley Quarter Midget Association’s website, the cars are onefourth the size of midget racecars. The small one-cylinder engines are similar in size and construction to most lawn mower engines. The cars reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour, but Slater said the drivers are not in danger. “There are lots of safety devices,” he said. “There’s neck braces, five-point harnesses and seatbelts, and everything’s fire-rated. All the helmets and gloves and tie-down restraints for their wrists are all fireretardant, so it’s a very safe sport.” For information about the sport and the Langley Quarter Midget Association, visit www.LQMA.ca.

Legend has it that there was an Irishman named Jack who was a stingy prankster. Jack even tricked the Devil out of Jack’s soul, making the Devil promise to never possess it. When Jack eventually died, he was refused entry to Heaven for being too mean and ill-mannered. Jack went down to Hell and the Devil kept his promise, refusing to allow him entry there, either. Jack asked the Devil how he could find his way around in the dark place between Heaven and Hell. The Devil tossed an ember to Jack, who placed it in a hollowed-out turnip. He then roamed eternity with his Jack O’Lantern.

Ross Davies of KEEPS lets Kailin Wood, 8, (left) and her sister Camron, 6, take a closer look at a salmon during the Return of the Salmon event at Kanaka Creek on 240th St. in Maple Ridge on Sunday. The event had close to 400 people in attendence. Mitch Thompson/TIMES DARWIN, From Page 14 His conversations with the memory of Annie become haunting, providing solace while plaguing him as the daydreams morph into hallucinations. “I know not what ails me, but it’s more than I can endure,” he confides to a doctor. At his sickest, Darwin is stripped and scrubbed and doused with water until he seems like a secular martyr. Much like life, the movie contains too much suffering, and when Darwin chases the vision of his daughter through city streets, most of the audience would rather hear a scientific extrapolation about water erosion. The movie also features short stories that Darwin tells his children, featuring forcible attempts to civilize savages with Christianity and kidnapped orangutans. The vignettes tend to be funny and a welcome respite from

Darwin’s battle for health and sanity. Jennifer Connelly plays Darwin’s wife, and seems to channel all her emotion into her piano playing, maintaining a firmly set jaw as she asks her husband how much he cares for his immortal soul. The movie also benefits from a powerful and lyrical opening credit sequence, as the audience is treated to images of the cosmos, microscopic organisms, schools of fish and flocks of birds, all of which represent the many fascinations of Darwin. The movie is adapted from the novel Annie’s Box and directed by John Amiel, who has worked on lighter fare like the heist movie Entrapment and the spy comedy The Man Who Knew Too Little with Bill Murray. Creation is well-paced, and an interesting, if perhaps overly sentimental portrait of one of the most brilliant thinkers of modern times who was funny, caring, haunted, and a guy just trying to keep it together.
