everal men and youths gangraped a 16-year-old female, while at least one youth took pictures at a Pitt Meadows rave last Friday, according to Ridge Meadows RCMP. Police say pictures of the alleged incident are now spreading “like wildﬁre.” “I’ve never experienced anything like what’s happened in this current investigation,” said Sergeant Jennifer Hyland. Police arrested a 16-year-old earlier this week, and are pursuing

criminal charges against him for production of child pornography. Police allege the arrested youth witnessed a sexual assault for more than 20 minutes, took photos, and sent them to friends on Facebook. Constable Aaron Lloyd said the graphic photos have been disseminated via Facebook and cellphones, and police efforts to stop the spread of the pictures have been futile. Lloyd said police began their investigation after a young person saw the photos on Facebook and contacted them. Ridge Meadows RCMP are currently trying to track down the ﬁve to seven men and youths they allege committed rape.

Photos of the alleged sexual assault were distributed on cell phones and posted on Facebook, according to police. “Every time you hit send on that photo, you are distributing child pornography,” Hyland said. Police are asking witnesses to come forward. A few hundred people attended the rave, according to Lloyd. He said some young people have been uncooperative with the investigation. Hyland said there are rumours and comments on Facebook indicating the alleged victim consented to have sex. “Despite what some people think they saw, this was rape,” she said.

Hyland said the victim was likely drugged and could not have consented. When asked how the victim was faring, Hyland replied, “Not well.” She said the alleged victim was injured and was currently receiving medical help. Police are awaiting the results of a toxicology test to help determine if the young woman received a daterape drug. Inspector Derren Lench said police believed a party at the secluded, rural Pitt Meadows property was going to take place on Saturday, and not Friday. “We would’ve liked to have had a stronger presence,” he said. Lench said police are looking at

investigating a number of possible offences associated with the party. “Obviously, the ones we want to put behind bars are the ones who actually committed the rape,” he said. Lench said tickets were sold for the rave. Pitt Meadows Mayor Don MacLean said a peaceful party had been held at the private property two weeks prior to the rave. “It’s deeply disturbing,” MacLean said, regarding the alleged sexual assault. He said a similar incident could have happened in any community. Lloyd said the young people whom police believe planned the rave are not the owners of the property.

Man missing since August 28 Ridge Meadows RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance in locating 56-year-old Wayne David King who has not been heard or seen since getting on a bus in Maple Ridge; he was supposed to be heading for Vancouver around 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28. King had just recently moved to Maple Ridge from Vancouver. He has some medical issues, and he has no medications that he requires, which will severely affect his health. King is described as a white male, 5’05” tall, and weighing 99 pounds. He has short grey hair. Anyone with any information as to King’s whereabouts are asked to call Ridge Meadows RCMP at 4636251 or any police department in the jurisdiction that King is in.

Mexican car stopped with spike belt Shortly before 3 a.m. on Thursday, police attempted to pull over a pickup truck with Mexico licence plates on Dewdney Trunk Road near 232 Street. The driver refused to pull over, and accelerated east. Police did not engage in a pursuit, but were able to deploy a spike belt, which flattened the truck tires. This forced the suspect to stop the truck. He attempted to run away but was apprehended and arrested near the truck, which had made its way onto 269 Street. The suspect was held in custody for a first court appearance later on Thursday.

Changes are taking place in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Times newsroom. Bob Groeneveld, whose column Odd Thoughts has frequently appeared on the Times Opinion page and website, will be taking over as editor, bringing with him more than 33 years of journalism experience. With him comes assistant editor Roxanne Hooper, who will take on a major role in the day-to-day editorial management of news for the Times. Also a long-time veteran in the industry, Hooper spent 12 of her 30 years in journalism as a reporter in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, so this week’s appointment is something of a homecoming for her. “Maple Ridge has always been close to my heart,” said Hooper. “The individuals and organizations I worked with there have always stood as an example to me of how volunteers can make a community special. I’m really looking forward to rekindling old friendships.” Community involvement is important to both Groeneveld and Hooper. During Hooper’s tenure in Maple Ridge, she

was deeply involved in such organizations as the Friends In Need Food Bank Society, serving both as a volunteer and on the board, chairing the organization through a major restructuring. Among her many other involvements in the community to which she is returning, Hooper served as co-chair and board member for the citizen advisory committee for one of Maple Ridge’s prisons, and worked with the Maple Ridge Fair, including redesigning a new prize book that earned the organization provincial accolades. Her strong afﬁnity for the Maple Ridge community helped Hooper to achieve the prestigious Eric Dunning Integrity Award from the B.C. & Yukon Community Newspaper Association, along with a host of other awards from the BCYCNA, the Canadian Community Newspaper Association, other peer journalism organizations, and appreciative charity and community groups. “As someone who has spent many years across the river in Langley, I realize I’ve got some catching up to do to get up to speed here,” said Groeneveld. “I’m going to rely heavily on Roxanne’s

experience and her ability to connect with the community, as well as senior reporter Maria Rantanen’s wealth of knowledge, in order to ensure that Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows readers get a full and interesting accounting of their community events and news in the Times.” Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Times publisher Ryan McAdams said he is conﬁdent both Groeneveld and Hooper will be a good ﬁt in their expanded roles. Groeneveld remains the editor and Hooper steps up as assistant editor at the Langley Advance, where both have worked effectively together for the past several years. Groeneveld stressed, “I want to make it very clear that we’re aiming to enhance the Times newsroom with an additional presence. We will continue to operate the Advance and the Times as very separate community newsrooms, to ensure that both are effective mirrors of their respective communities, focusing on what makes each community distinct and special.” Former Times editor Chris Campbell has left the company. Robber smashes cell phone, punches man

Ridge Meadows RCMP are investigating a robbery from a man who was walking in the 11900 block of 227 Street. At approximately 12:40 p.m. on Monday, the victim was approached from behind by a lone male. The suspect surprised the victim, and produced a weapon while demanding the victim hand over personal property. When the victim relinquished his

cell phone, the suspect smashed it on the ground and punched the victim. The suspect then ran off. The victim did not get a good look at the suspect, but said he was a well-tanned white male, with hairy arms. He was wearing black jeans and new red and white shoes.

Sex assault, confinement could net 14 years Alleged drug dealer Victor Joseph Reis was found guilty of sexual assault and conﬁnement on Wednesday stemming from a night in Maple Ridge two years ago. Justice Terence Schultes eviscerated the testimony of several defense witnesses, referring to various statements as “absurd,” “unrealistic,” and “a fabrication designed to work backwards.” Reis could be facing more than 14 years in prison. The sexual assault took place in an area of Maple Ridge nicknamed the ghetto, due to the high rate of trafﬁcking and drug use. The victim, who cannot be named due to a publication ban, used hard drugs like crack-cocaine and heroin, said she only expected to make a short trip with Reis, but once in his basement suite, he refused to let her leave. Reis repeatedly yelled at her to take off her clothes, according to the victim. She described Reis as “vicious” and “psychotic.” Reis threatened her with a sword as well as a bat at various points in the evening, spat on her, and choked her with his forearm while telling

statements some witnesses made to police and their testimony in court. Jim Wagner, who saw the victim the morning after the assault, initially described her to police as “upset and breaking down,” but told the court she didn’t seem distressed that morning. Jeff Skea testified he entered the apartment to buy drugs while Reis was asleep on the night of the assault. He testified the victim was watching a video and seemed: “Content, calm and relaxed.” Judge Schultes called Skea’s testimony “absurd,” with “no possible basis in reality.” Schultes said Skea’s account of paying for drugs with an “honour box” was not credible. Schultes also took issue with Skea’s “bizarrely offhand manner of giving evidence,” and said the witness did not take the trial seriously. The defense contended the victim, who suffers from bipolar disorder as well as having drug addictions, was unreliable. Defence attorney Tony Zipp called several witnesses who testified they thought the victim wanted to have sex with Reis. Schultes said he considered the victim’s

Crown prosecutor Winston Sayson said the verdict would result in some relief for the victim.

A nurse’s examination shortly after the assault revealed soreness consistent with recent blunt force trauma, but DNA evidence was insufﬁcient, according to Judge Schultes. Schultes focused on several contradictions between Reis’ testimony and the testimony of other defence witnesses. Reis denied ever using cell phones to arrange drug deals, although Schultes characterized Reis’ house as being: “ubiquitous with [cell phones],” and said other witnesses testiﬁed to seeing Reis make drug deals on his cell phone. Reis explained the bat police found in his apartment by saying he played baseball recreationally, a statement contradicted by another witness, according to Schultes. The judge said Reis’ small bat would only be useful to a man of Reis’ size for striking others. Judge Schultes said there were “critical inconsistencies” between the

While the province of British Columbia boasts increased funding for gaming grants this year, some Maple Ridge cultural, environmental and community groups using gaming money have taken cuts to valuable funding. British Columbia has given out $120 million in gaming grants province-wide this year – $7.4 million more than last year. Maple Ridge received $716,310 from this pool, but more groups have been applying for available funding, resulting in some receiving less than they desire. The maximum amount available for gaming grants changed this year to $100,000 per organization, which MLA Marc Dalton said allows for gaming funds to be spread more widely throughout the applicants. This year the Ridge Meadows Child Development Centre received $100,000, down from $120,000 in 2009-2010. Audrey Taylor, the executive director for the centre, said $20,000 less means a staff member could lose a quarter of his or her hours. “It’s about a quarter of a time,” Taylor said. “It means either less hours per staff member or less staff. In our case we currently have a

federal grant, so we’ve been able to absorb some of that.” However, the centre’s federal grant ends in September 2012. “We’re feeling the effects now, but we’ll feel the effects even more after the federal grant is finished,” Taylor said. “What a decrease in staffing means is that basically parents and students need to wait longer for service. There is a three to 12-month waiting period, or sometimes more.” The Maple Ridge Historical Society also received less than they hoped for. This year they received $15,000, while two years ago it was $30,000. “Last year it was taken away [completely], then this year we got back half of what we’d originally been getting,” said Val Patenaude, Maple Ridge Museum director. “That funding covers all the things we do in the community that are outside of the museum building.” Patenaude said the absence of a gaming grant last year was difficult, because they tried to continue their usual programs in the community. She said even without the funding, they made an effort to keep doing the programs the community enjoys and expects. See GRANTS, Page 7

The Alouette River Management Society is in the third year of a three-year contract, receiving a $40,000 grant annually. Abby Cruickshank, the acting executive director of the society, said they plan to apply for funding for next year as well. “The gaming money goes to the general operation of the society ... It is a huge deal for us,” Cruickshank said. “It’s the sustaining funding for our organization.” Marc Dalton said while the gaming grants are important, having less funding available may not be completely negative for the recipients. “If you rely too much on public funds, that can be difﬁcult if you go through the ﬁnancial crises that we went through last year,” he said. “I think it’s healthy

for any organization to have a broader source of funding, above and beyond government funding, like support from the community. In the long term it will probably beneﬁt the organization.” The Cythera Transition House Society, a non-proﬁt organization that provides help to abused women and children, embodies this advice. Although they received $25,000 less from gaming grants this year, they have been able to remain successful thanks to community support. “We have the means and we have a huge volunteer base; we can manage,” said executive director Teresa Green. “It didn’t affect us as much as it probably did others. That’s where our thrift store really comes in handy, through community support. We will be able to sustain our level of program services.”

Ridge Meadows RCMP’s Street Enforcement Unit, along with the Marijuana Enforcement Team, executed a search warrant on a home in the 25000 block of Ferguson Avenue in east Maple Ridge, seizing marijuana, ﬁrearms, machetes, and cash. The policing teams entered the home just after 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Two Pitt Meadows males, 25 and 22, were arrested, along with a 25-year-old Maple Ridge man, after they attempted to escape. A total of 1,280 marijuana plants were located inside the home, as were the ﬁrearms and machetes. Police seized a quantity of money that they’re alleging is proceeds from the sale and distribution of the illegal drugs. The warrant was granted to the police on a theft of hydro (electrical power) allegation.

Referendum date gives Liberals time to regroup and marshal its forces

Voters of British Columbia will have a chance to decide for themselves what should be done about the HST. But their decision will have no more weight than a strong suggestion. A special committee comprised of 10 MLAs – six from the government side of the legislature and four from the opposition – has voted to take the Harmonized Sales Tax to a non-binding referendum (although the premier has vowed it will be binding, if you can trust anything that man says anymore) a little more than a year from now. Not surprisingly, since the committee’s make-up was dominated by BC Liberals, the decision is the most favourable outcome for Premier Gordon Campbell and his government. It’s also no surprise that the NDP members of the committee wanted to send Bill Vander Zalm’s anti-HST bill – the result of his successful citizen’s initiative – directly to the legislature, to be put to a binding and conclusive vote. Scheduling a referendum for Sept. 24 of next year accomplishes two things for the beleaguered Liberal government and its leader. Surely, they are hoping that a full year will allow angry British Columbians – whipped to a frenzy by the anti-HST campaign – to forget what they hate about the HST, while (they surely hope) the economy “ The obvious stall could just rile recovers voters even more .” enough for riled voters Bob Groeneveld to calm down. HST hits you even after death Editor: Between the everyday life of work, kids, maintaining a home and trying to stay healthy you don’t pay much attention to what any politician says, whether they are left, right or centre of the road. It all becomes an irritating buzz in your ear like the mosquitoes in the tent when you’re camping. I follow the politics of my paycheque. I have a good job. I work and I pay my bills. What is left at the end of the day is getting less and less. With the new Harmonized Sales Tax there should be no doubt why. To make my dollars go further I bought used clothing and found it is now taxed with HST. School supplies for my three kids this year had the HST added on. I sent my work boots in to be re-soled for the very ﬁrst time and even they are not exempt from the HST. I paid for my son’s karate lessons and shazaam, the HST. The ultimate has to be the new cost of death. I was helping my mother go over her estate plan and discovered that you now have to pay HST on the funeral. In B.C., you now pay taxes all your life and even in death. Did the government need to add tax to these

Tymoschuk, who is in the ninth grade, said she was inspired to start helping people about two years ago. She was in the hospital for her ﬁfth surgery and her mother was handling the

ancilliary costs that came with the eight-day stay. “She wasn’t working, so she was probably worried about money and worried about me,” Tymoschuk said. It was during that stay a social worker named Cheri King offered her mother some coupons to ease the costs. “She’s very helpful and kind,” Tymoschuk said of King. See TEEN, Page 12

If you’re hurt in an accident, you have a duty to “mitigate” (take reasonable steps to minimize) your losses relating to your injuries. The reason is to prevent you from receiving “damages” (compensation) for any losses caused by your own neglect. Typically this comes up when the defence (i.e., ICBC) claims that you ignored medical advice. They might argue that you would be much better and have recovered more quickly if you had followed your doctor’s recommendations. If they prove this, your total damages may be reduced. For example, in one case, the plaintiff chose naturopathic remedies instead of the injections and surgery recommended by three orthopedic surgeons for her injured shoulder. The court reduced her damages by 30% for her failure to mitigate. But the defence must prove that your failure or refusal to follow the recommended treatment meant you didn’t get better as fully or quickly as you could have. Take the recent case of a plaintiff who suffered herniated discs in his back when he was rear-ended. The defence argued that he failed to mitigate by not continuing to pursue the physiotherapy, massage therapy, kinesiology or acupuncture three months after the accident, as recommended. They also argued he should have hired a personal trainer or followed a structured exercise program. But the plaintiff did see a chiropractor regularly, bought a new mattress for his back, purchased a home gym and gravity extension table and followed an exercise program at home, and took prescription and herbal medication. The BC Court of Appeal decided that the defence hadn’t proved that the plaintiff’s “less than full compliance with medical recommendations would have made any difference to his continuing disability.” Accordingly, the plaintiff’s damages of over $170,000 were not reduced. What if you stop following the recommended medical treatment because you can’t afford it? In a recent case, an active 30-year-old apprentice plumber suffered moderate soft tissue injuries to

his neck and back when his car was forcefully rearended. Four years after the accident, he still took narcotic painkillers for headaches and couldn’t ski, hike, hunt, camp or do yard work as before. For 18 months after the accident, he regularly saw a physiotherapist, massage therapist and chiropractor and went to the gym almost daily. He was starting to feel stronger and better. But then ICBC stopped paying for his rehabilitation. He only earned about $30,000 a year and couldn’t afford treatment on his own. At trial, ICBC argued he didn’t mitigate his losses and his damages should be reduced. The BC Supreme Court said, however, that the assessment of whether a plaintiff has taken reasonable steps to minimize their losses depends on all the circumstances. Financial circumstances are one factor to consider. This was not a case where the plaintiff refused to follow medical advice. Indeed, the plaintiff saved for an annual gym membership and six months later (two years after the accident), returned to the gym and lost weight. When his income increased, he also returned to massage therapy. The court decided that he didn’t act unreasonably in determining how best to try and pay for the treatments that had helped him, but which were no longer going to be paid for by ICBC. His total damages of over $400,000 weren’t cut as a result. If you’re injured in an accident and entitled to damages, a lawyer can help protect your rights and obtain the best compensation for you.

Miranda Tymoschuk was in the second grade when she had surgery to lengthen her left leg. Since then, she’s gone under the knife eight more times, but rather than bemoaning her fate, the Thomas Haney student is trying to make life better for other patients at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster with each cookie she bakes and every pop bottle she collects. Over the past two years, Tymoschuk has helped raise more than $1,700 for Pay it Forward, a charity that tries to cushion the financial blow for families in the middle of a medical emergencies by taking care of expenses like parking and meals. “They need help to get their meals and for transportation costs,” she said. “Some people get flown in and all they have is the clothes on their back.” Tymoschuk has a condition called posteromedial bowing, which causes her left tibia to grow at a slower rate than her right tibia. Tymoschuk has also dealt with mild scoliosis and high cholesterol, an ailment she said she inherited from her father. Her father died of a heart attack when Tymoschuk was five. Adding to her troubles, Tymoschuk wrote in an email she’s currently dealing with an undiagnosed problem. “For the past five months I have really not been feeling well,” she wrote. “I have seen a doctor about it but we don’t know what’s wrong yet.” Despite it all, Tymoschuk sounded chipper while describing a bake sale she’s planning to hold in October at Haney Place Mall. Tymoschuk said the mall

Tymoschuk credits the surgeries and hospital stays for giving her a greater understanding of the hardships some people endure, as well as putting her in touch with Pay it Forward. Tymoschuk shares her experiences with children facing limb-lengthening surgery on her website, theillizarov.yolasite.com, which includes the history of the surgery (ﬁrst used on Russian soldiers in WWII) and tips on how the surgery will change the patient’s wardrobe (zippers and snaps are recommended). Her surgeries have involved the surgeon breaking a bone, inserting screws in her leg and slowly pulling the bone apart. The bone is then supposed to grow back together. Tymoschuk said she’s had two major surgeries and several emergency surgeries caused by screws falling out and other problems. In total, her left leg has been lengthened by approximately seven centimeters as a result of the surgeries. “There were points when I was really tired and really not feeling good,” she said.

Tymoschuk said after a good night’s sleep, she usually felt better in the morning. Tymoschuk expressed gratitude to Big Feast Bistro for donating bottles, as well as a small circle of friends for donating their time. “I have one friend named McKenzie Bowker, and whenever I do something she’s more than happy to help,” she said. She said her goal is to raise at least $5,000 for Pay It Forward. Tymoschuk is considering a career as an orthopedic surgeon.

Parent asks drivers not to idle cars

The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows board of education wants to get the message out that idling cars in front of schools is not healthy for arriving students. Prompted by a letter to the board from a parent at Alouette Elementary, the board requested the superintendent of schools to ask principals to get the message out in school newsletters. Kari Hurtado, the parent from Alouette who wrote to the board of education, stated in the letter that she has seen parents running their cars for up to 15 minutes while waiting for their children. Trustee Kathie Ward said cars are at “exactly the right height” for children to be breathing in exhaust fumes, and, given the mild climate, there isn’t any need to idle cars.

War brought out quirky teachers Back to school, with all its days and hours and memories. It’s a long time since I sat in a classroom and answered to my name but there are moments when it’s as though it were yesterday. I should tell you that the Second World War played games with my education and I found myself being moved from place to place and school to school too many times for a smooth passage. Alan When I was nine I was Woodland sent to a mixed elementary school where I was the only Here and southerner among several hundred midlanders and then I moved to boys schools at eleven (twice), twelve (once), thirteen (twice) and fourteen (three times), before returning to the coast when it was believed the threat of invasion was over. We arrived home just in time for the ﬂying bombs, but that’s another story. Most of the young teachers had gone to war and the ones we had were either too old for the forces or had delayed retirement to serve their country in front of a blackboard. This had advantages and disadvantages: the plus side being that some of the teachers were highly skilled in the subjects they taught and brought an expanded world view to the narrow curriculum. Our geography teacher had cycled through much of Europe before the war, knew where you could freewheel downhill for six miles and the quality of the wine in the estaminet at the bottom. One physics teacher, who enjoyed his pint, would set distance problems from one public house to another, but to ensure freedom from inquiring school trustees and parents, he asked us to call them milk bars. And one math teacher had such colourful

language that we spent less time taking notes about the subject than we did making notes of how it was expressed. A thin student would be described as willowy, a larger one as a beefy great herbert. A French teacher, who fought in France in the ﬁrst World War and had a detailed knowledge of the pleasure palaces of that complex and interesting land, would set us the heavy (to us) task of producing an essay in French every week. To make this imposition bearable we thirteen year olds decided that we would There entertain ourselves by agreeing on a word or a phrase that each one of us would use in our essay. The word vitesse means swiftness or speed, so ‘a toute vitesse’ means really moving along. In each essay we introduced some kind of vehicle, person or animal that was really moving along. The essays came back. The teacher said not a word. Thinking his failure to comment on our ploy was because he hadn’t paid enough attention to notice, we decided to up the ante. One of the meanings of the French verb effrayer is to terrify, from which comes effrayant, terrifying. So in our next essay each of us had the same vehicle, person or animal now travelling across the page ‘a vitesse effrayant’ – perhaps not grammatically correct but terrifyingly fast. That got him. But how did he react? When he had our full attention he said, “About your essays: I have a mind to speak to you in French, but you and I know, that even if I did so at a speed substantially less than that which appears to have caused you such collective amusement, I doubt the best of you would catch the half of it.” I know that’s what he said because I made a note of that too.

Artists Rik Watson and Claire Louise Stephen are welcoming the public onto their property at 25812 Dewdney Trunk Rd. for the 11th annual Art in the Swamp exhibit. Admission is free. “People really have a good time,” Stephen said. “We don’t charge the artists anything and we don’t charge the public anything.” The weekend art show will feature as many as eight artists. Scott Schell, Watson, and Stephen are scheduled to show their artwork from 10 a.m. to 4:48 p.m. both days. Watson will have his interactive art on display, including the toll-free Golden Feet Bridge that leads to Weasel Wood, the Peace Maze, the Path of Peace, and Hackers Heaven, a hacky-sack course based on famous art pieces. “Over the years I have developed a bunch of outdoor installations,” Watson said. “In the back ﬁeld I have a peace maze that you can see on Google Earth.” Stephen will show her 12 Angel paintings that will be featured in her 2011 Angel Calendar. The artists will donate 10 per cent of their sales to the Friends in Need Food Bank.

ome folks keep a bucket list – things they want to visit, do, or accomplish before they meet their maker. For some, items may include getting married, having a child, then a grandchild. World travellers might add visiting Stonehenge, the Egyptian pyramids, or the Great Wall of China, and daredevil-types would likely attach sky-diving to their list. This fall, Yuen’s Family Martial Arts owner and instructor Perry Bateson will be able to

check off an item that is way off the beaten track - in both a metaphorical and a literal sense. From Nov. 29 to Dec. 11, Bateson will lead a group of his students and other volunteers from the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows area into Orellana, Peru, where they plan to furnish and refurbish a building housing school children. “In this town down the Amazon, there’s a school there, and the kids come from surrounding areas to go to school,” Bateson explained. Bateson and his team of between 10 and 14 volunteers are bringing 20 bunk-beds for the children to sleep on. The Canadian contingent also plans on painting, and building tables and chairs during its stay. Outfitting the building with furniture and beds is one of three objectives Bateson and his team hope to accomplish while in Orellana. “We are also going to teach the kids to farm, to grow their own food,” Bateson said, “so that we start a generation of kids looking after themselves.” Bateson admits he has “no farming experience whatsoever,” but added it is a learning experience for all involved. The organization STIMMA, an acronym for Short Term Immediate Medical Missions Abroad, has purchased a small plot of land for the children to farm on. The volunteers will ship in fertilizer and seeds to grow cucumbers, tomatoes, beans and peas. Bateson’s final objective is to establish a water irrigation system. “Hopefully we can get the kids to begin filtrating and cleaning their water,” Bateson said. “They take everything out of the Amazon, so worms and parasites are a huge problem for them. We are trying to get them trained on drinking clean and fresh water.” Going back to the bucket list concept, Bateson said this mission has been a longtime goal of his. “It was something I always wanted to do in my life,” Bateson said. “Then my daughter

Then a couple of my students started to ask about it, so we had a meeting with the group from STIMMA and it started to materialize from there.” Bateson can thank his good friend Google for connecting him with STIMMA. “I just started Googling and researching organizations that met the needs that I wanted to get involved in, and they were just a very small organization that was doing small missions,” Bateson recalled. “I didn’t want to get involved in anything too overwhelming or too big. So they are just a small organization.” As luck would have it, STIMMA representative Lindsay Buss is based out of Maple Ridge. Late November is the best time to go, Bateson said, because there has to be enough water in the Amazon to hold the boats his group will be travelling on. “Because it’s down the Amazon, then off the main river, we have to make sure there’s water to make sure we can get down to the town,” Bateson said. Bateson hopes his trip to Peru will affect the students and parents going. “I think it really gives them a sense of humility, and a sense of giving back to a community and what that really means,” Bateson said. He is calling for help and donations from the community. Each volunteer will bring two 50-pound hockey bags full of supplies. Donations are needed of hockey bags, personal hygiene supplies, light clothing and ﬂip-ﬂops to donate to children in Peru. A bottle drive is also being held at the martial arts school Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. to noon. Garlic – smelly but wonderful

Being a chef, I am certain that you will think my opinion is biased when I tell you that garlic is my friend. However, I have reasons to support my love for this little bulb. I honestly believe that most people who say they hate the taste of garlic must have been exposed to an overpowered caesar dressing or Greek tzatziki sauce at some point in their lives. Garlic, when cooked, does not have that overly pungent flavour reminiscent of these raw form recipes. Alternatively, it has a sweeter and smoother temperament and adds a depth of flavour to your dish that cannot be mimicked. A perfect example of this would be roasted garlic. Whole heads of garlic roasted in the oven can be pureed and mixed into an endless variety of recipes such as bread-dough, dips, spreads or stuffings, and it’s one of the easiest things to prepare: Preheat your oven to 450 degrees. Keep the garlic heads whole, and cut off the tops of the garlic heads, just enough to expose the tops of the garlic cloves. Place the garlic heads of garlic in an ovenproof casserole dish equipped with a lid. Drizzle one teaspoon of olive oil over each of the exposed garlic heads, and season lightly with salt and fresh cracked pepper. Cover and bake for 45 minutes. Remove from the oven and let stand at room temperature (with the lid on) until cool enough to touch. Serve whole for presentation, or squeeze out the cloves and mix into a variety of spreads, dips or sauces. Garlic is one of the oldest cultivated plants known to mankind and has been hailed as one of world’s most celebrated medicinal vegetables. There are many stories of old that proclaim of its pure powers to increase endurance and stamina. It also has many therapeutic properties. Medical studies have confirmed that garlic contains natural antibiotic and cleansing qualities and it is used to treat a wide range of health problems. When buying garlic, you want to make sure that that the bulb or “head” is not discoloured and it is tightly

Chef Dez On Cooking wrapped in its own natural paper-like skin. Do not buy garlic that is falling apart, as this is a sure sign of its age. Additionally, stay away from garlic that has little green sprouts coming from the encased cloves – although these are virtually harmless, they are a sign that the garlic has been stored in an area that is too humid. Garlic is best stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space and it will keep for several months. It is not recommended that you store garlic in your refrigerator. I personally cook with and consume garlic on a daily basis. There are many great ways to add this wonderful vegetable to a variety of dishes; just practice “moderation” if the thought of the taste in your recipe scares you. Dear Chef Dez: I have heard that the common garlic available in grocery stores comes from China. Is this true and if so where can I buy local garlic? Roy R. Nanaimo Dear Roy: Yes, this is usually the case. The sign at your produce counter should say where the garlic is from, or if sold in small mesh bags of three heads there will be a tag on it. Alternatively you can always inquire with the produce staff if you are unsure about the garlic’s origin. A favourite local garlic of mine is Red Russian. It has more ﬂavour and usually larger cloves. Local farmers’ markets or more specialty stores usually carry it. A few phone calls to markets in your area, before you venture out, will save you some time. TaeGeuk Tae Kwon Do is holding a grand opening for its first branch school in Maple Ridge this Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The mayor will attend this community event, along with three past taekwondo Olympians, who teach and train at the school. There will be trial lessons from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as a formal demonstration from 4 to 5 p.m. All that is required to attend is a non-perishable food item that will be donated to the food bank. The food drive is TaeGeuk Tae Kwon Do’s entry in a competition hosted by True Sport, a national organization dedicated to the growth of community sports. On Saturday, local sports groups will be competing by doing something good for their community. $5,000 to $10,000 will be given to the city of the winning sports organization. eat fear to a pulp – it’s something mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters have to do each time they go into battle. In Dan Carter’s case, the idea of defending himself from flying feet and fists, vice-like choke-holds that may make his eyes roll back into his head, and potentially bone-breaking submission manoeuvres only make him a bit fidgety – a visitor armed with pens, a notepad, a tape recorder, and a digital camera, well... “Everyone’s going to feel nervous when it comes down to it [MMA fighting]. This interview probably makes me more nervous than when it comes down to the real thing,” the 33-year-old said earlier this week, after working out at a frenetic pace inside his garage/training facility/ home office in Maple Ridge. “When fight night comes, it’s either you or me. You don’t want to be held back by fear.”

Carter will compete in the bantamweight division at Extreme MMA 3 – The B.C. Championships tonight (Friday). The event is being held at the Boulevard Casino’s Red Robinson Show Theatre in Coquitlam. While he has been involved in MMA for a relatively short three-anda-half years, Carter’s history with combat sports dates back to when he was a kid. He wrestled and boxed in grade school as well as high school in his hometown of Orillia, Ont. His background makes MMA a natural ﬁt, said Carter, a married father of ﬁve. “MMA just seemed like an extreme sport,” he added. Carter owns a 1-1 record under the Canadian Amateur Combat Sports Council, which is presenting tonight’s card. Carter is chomping at the bit, saying his main attribute is his willingness to “just go out there and do it. I don’t have the fears or anything holding me back.”

“I’ve been sharpening every angle of my game. I’ve worked on everything,” he said. Carter said he’s an effective fighter on the ground, but instinctively finds himself in a vertical position most times, which makes the format of tonight’s card tailor-made for him. A “30-second ground rule” will be in play, meaning if the combatants aren’t generating enough action on the mat, the referee will order them to stand back up and resume the fight on their feet. “The ground rule makes for a lot of action, plus there are shorter rounds so these guys are going to come in and push hard,” Carter said. During tonight’s single-elimination tournament, Carter will fight once, or as many as three times, depending on how he fares. Also scheduled to enter in the bantamweight division are 22-yearold Evan Recard, 20-year-old Brandon Pohynayko, 23-year-old Abdul Majid, all from the Lower Mainland, 22-year-old Ross Walker, a Western

Who Carter initially goes up against was anyone’s guess leading up to Extreme MMA 3 – until today, that is, when Carter learns who his first opponent will be. That element, he said, adds to the excitement. “You never know who you are going to fight,” he said. “You never just train for one guy if you intend on moving on in this tournament. You’ve got to train for everyone possible. Then, as guys get eliminated, you find out who you are fighting, as well. You’ve got to be chameleon-like and adapt quickly.” If Carter wins his first bout, he’ll very likely fight again later on during the show. Troy Landreville/TIMES MMA, From Page 26 Carter trained for the better part of a year for tonight’s event. “Each time I train, I train to be better,” he said. “I wanted to fight in the Canadian championships and I wasn’t ready. This tournament’s not weak; these guys are coming in and they’re ready to go. I trained for eight months to get to this point.” To make the 145-pound weight limit, Carter had to shed close to 25 pounds. “As long as I keep myself hydrated properly, I’m within five pounds now, so it comes pretty easily,” he said. Carter will have a training partner competing on the card. Rob Woodcock, 24, of New Westminster is scheduled to compete in the lightweight division. Out of a warehouse in Maple Ridge, Carter trains MMA fighters. “I do it for the love of it, man,” Carter said. “I bring in guys who want to do it, and if they’re serious, I train with

them.” The sport of MMA is pointed in a positive direction, in Carter’s opinion. “By unifying the rules in amateur as well as pro is important,” Carter said. “It seems like we take a few steps forward, then at times it feels like we take a step back.” On the subject of moving forward, Carter said he isn’t looking past tonight’s challenge. “I’m treating it like it’s my last time,” he said. “You never know with this sport. It’s up and down every day.” During tonight’s amateur MMA tournament, up to eight men per division will compete, with only one surviving to be crowned B.C. champion. There will be six weight divisions. Joy of art at Camp Goodtimes attended in previous years. The throng of eager campers painted at the outdoor studio set high overlooking the beautiful Loon Lake. They worked in groups to plan their paintings based on the theme: “What Camp Goodtimes means to me.” The theme was chosen to honour the 25th anniversary of the camp and the teens responded by creating meaningful and moving canvases. Despite the adversity many of these teens face, the atmosphere was joyful and positive. Picard, always the captivating and gregarious teacher and master painter, circulated through the tight clusters of painters offering encouragment and direction. Volunteers kept the water

Imagine a summer evening, 67 teens full of gusto, 12 large canvases stretched tautly along tent walls, and dozens of pallets loaded with bright pools of paint. That was the scene at Camp Goodtimes situated deep in the forest beside Lake Loon, Maple Ridge. The annual summer camp, hosted by the Canadian Cancer Society, is for children and teens with cancer. This year is the 25th anniversary. James Picard, renowned Canadian artist, teacher and humanitarian, spearheaded the class for the fourth consecutive year. Picard’s return to the camp was highly anticipated by the teens. Word spread about the fantastic experience from those campers who

buckets clean and the pallets full. Some teens quietly collaborated, sharing ideas while others bantered and teased. Laughter and teamwork were abundant. The bond amongst the teens was palpable. Time seemed to be suspended as creativity and companionship ﬁlled the evening air. At the end of the night, the dozen ﬁnished canvases were powerful expressions about camp: friendship, gratitude, hope, comfort, acceptance and survival. These teens, who are dealing with extreme situations, conveyed their emotions with frankness and honesty. Something truly magical took place that evening and art was the vehicle.
