It’s been called the best Fraser River run in nearly a century, but those who fish the river only have a small window to reap the harvest. Reporter Scott McKenzie went out on a boat Wednesday and witnessed the frantic work.

Time’s short when fish biting

.C. is now reaping the biggest sockeye salmon return in nearly a century, just a year after one of the smallest returns on record. That’s why Phil Eidsvik, along with his 18-year-old daughter Andrea and colleague Glen Budden were out fishing sockeye on the Fraser River Wednesday for 32 straight hours. Fisheries officials estimated Tuesday that more than 25 million sockeye will return to the Fraser River this year, the largest number since 1913. Last year’s number was 1.7 million. That estimate could yet go higher, said Barry Rosenberger, area director for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, as Tuesday’s catch was the largest all year. The department has approved another set of openings for commercial fishing and expanded the fishery based on the record returns. Eidsvik said that he would previously be allowed to fish for three hours, which was moved up to five hours, and then to eight. Now he’s licensed for 32-hour days. The huge bounty is causing challenges for supplier and retailer 7 Seas, where they’re turning down fishermen due to a surplus of sockeye. “People have fish going rotten in their boats; it’s really bad,” said 7 Seas president George Heras. “The fish is overwhelming everyone right now because many people have left the business after so many bad years. Eidsvik, who is also the spokesperson for the B.C. Fisheries Survival Coalition, said that people are going to be stocking up their freezers because “it won’t be like this next year.” On Wednesday, Eidsvik’s boat drifted from close to the Port Haney Wharf to about 200 Street because it took so long to pick the salmon out of the net. have caught a year ago, Eidsvik said that he’d be happy to catch 50. During the 32-hour fishing day, the three crew members took shifts sleeping in the ship’s only bed so they could keep up the pace. The Eidsviks are from Burnaby and didn’t want to head back at all, Andrea said, because the two-hour trip along the river would be a waste of time due to the amount of fish they could be catching. “This is the first year we’ve fished sockeye in four years, and we don’t expect to fish for the next three years,” said Phil. “You can fish all day and there’s still fish at the end. It’s good news.” Rosenberger said 10 million salmon have been accounted for so far, with 4.1 million caught and 5.9 million expected to spawn.

A Pitt Meadows man convicted of possession of child pornography will spend his next seven weekends in jail and a year under house arrest, according to a judge’s ruling last Wednesday. After pleading guilty to one count of possession of child pornography Ray Murray, 66, will serve the minimum mandatory sentence of 14 days in jail, served on weekends, followed by 34 months of probation. Murray will not be permitted to be alone with anyone under the age of 16. Murray also pleaded guilty to one charge of improper storage of a ﬁrearm, resulting in the judge’s decision to prohibit him from using or owning ﬁrearms for one year. Judge Shehni Dossa said she had reviewed a portion of the threeminute video taken from Murray’s computer, which she said included prepubescent females and adult males. “Images in this instance are at the lower end of the scale of depravity,” she said. Dossa said there were mitigating circumstances in this case, due to the fact Murray had no part in creating the material nor any intent to distribute child pornography. Judge Dossa also cited a psychiatric report that stated Murray’s remorse was genuine. Dossa said Murray, who is divorced and retired, is “somewhat isolated,” but said he was a very low risk to offend again. Metro police in London, England noted the IP address for Murray’s computer during a child pornography investigation last year and passed the information to the RCMP. According to RCMP Sergeant Bev Csikos, Murray visited a childabuse website hosted by an English company and clicked to download a free three-minute trailer for a child pornography movie.

Upfront Courts Pekingese owner charged with animal cruelty

Pitt Meadows resident David Chan has been charged with animal cruelty in the alleged abuse of his seven-month-old Pekingese, Bosco. A veterinarian alerted SPCA constables after Chan brought the dog to his clinic on Feb. 9 suffering from a broken hip and two fractured hind legs. The dog was euthanized at Chan’s request. “During our investigation we discovered that Chan had taken 11 Pekingese dogs to three different clinics on numerous occasions between 2008 and 2010, all suffering from suspicious injuries and ailments,” said Marcie Moriarty, general manager of cruelty investigations for the SPCA. “Some of the dogs were already deceased from their injuries when he brought them to the clinics, others were suffering from burns, deep cuts, hemorrhages, ulcerated lesions, inflamed ears and eyes, serious fractures and malnutrition.” Moriarty said the SPCA pursued charges under both the Criminal Code of Canada and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and executed a warrant on Feb. 16 to take Dolly, Chan’s remaining Pekingese, into protective custody. While awaiting news on whether charges had been approved, the SPCA received a report on Aug. 19 that Chan had purchased another Pekingese dog and alerted Crown counsel. Chan makes his first appearance in Port Coquitlam court on Sept. 9. If convicted, he faces a fine of up to $10,000, up to six months in jail and a prohibition on owning animals for a period of time determined by a judge. Under his bail conditions Chan may not own, possess or be alone with any animal. See information about other local animal cruelty charges on Page 7.

few seconds after Doug De Patie addressed the National Parole Board, he turned his back on his son’s killer and rested his elbows on a

table. For about a minute, Doug struggled to shuffle the papers that contained his family’s victim impact statement. He struggled because his hands were shaking so badly. “I was very nervous,” Doug said after the hearing. “This wasn’t an easy thing to do. I would rather have done anything else than come here.” Everybody in that room at Matsqui Institution in Abbotsford — from the parole board members to the media to the parole officer to the two guards who sat close to Grant De Patie’s killer Darnell Pratt — were there to do a job. Doug wished Pratt luck. No, actually he wished Darnell luck. He called him by his first name and said that he hoped Darnell would turn his life around and become a good citizen. That would honour his son’s memory and make Grant’s sacrifice somehow worth it. That was when Doug still had hope for Darnell. On Tuesday, there was no hope in Doug’s voice. That’s what happens when a killer gets a second chance and then blows it within 24 hours by getting drunk, picking up heroin, making plans to flee town and not showing up to the halfway house.

File photo What happened broke Doug’s spirit. He didn’t hold back during the parole hearing, as well as after it when meeting with the media. He called his son’s killer a “sociopath” who had milked the system and was now lying in order to cover up for another series of blunders. “With the total disregard Mr. Pratt showed, it reduced the other conditions to the point where they were not worth the paper they were written on. Mr. Pratt has played the system since day one and will continue to do so...his actions are a slap in the face to the justice system and to my family grieving the loss of Grant to the hands of Mr. Pratt.” He believes Pratt is “institutionalized” to the point where he has little or no understanding of how to function as a normal citizen. “I don’t see much of a future for Darnell,” Doug

said. “He lives in the moment. He is his own worst enemy.” When the National Parole Board revoked Pratt’s parole, it gave the De Paties 15 months to not worry about what Pratt will be doing. In November 2011, however, Pratt will be released. Doug said he doesn’t want to have to go through this again, but that means Pratt will “have to do what he says he will, which is grow up.” In the meantime, Doug is readying his Newton home for sale. Doug and his wife Corinne are moving out of the Lower Mainland to a quiet spot. They will take Grant’s ashes, which are in an urn, with them, Doug said, adding that they will likely take down the roadside memorial that marks where his son’s body was found. “It’ll be good to be out of the Lower Mainland,” Doug said. “A fresh start.”

Killer not ‘transparent’ or ‘manageable’

Darnell Pratt, who dragged 24-year-old Maple Ridge resident Grant De Patie for seven kilometres under a stolen car in an attempted gas-and-dash, will remain in jail for another 15 months unless he is granted an earlier parole. The National Parole Board held a hearing Tuesday morning, but needed less than 10 minutes to decide that Pratt was “not transparent” and that he posed a “risk” that was “impossible to manage.” Pratt is now due for statutory release in November, 2011. It is not known yet where Pratt will serve the rest of his time. Police issued a Canadawide warrant for Pratt after he failed to show up at his

Kamloops halfway house in June. He was arrested two days later. During the hearing Tuesday, held at Matsqui Institution in Abbotsford, it was revealed that Pratt had been found drinking in a pub twice in two days. Police also found what they believed to be heroin in his pocket. Pratt denied that he bought the heroin. He said somebody gave it to him and he did not use it, although he admitted that if he hadn’t been arrested he likely would have used the drugs. Doug De Patie, Grant De Patie’s father, wasn’t buying that story. “I don’t believe a word he said in there,” De Patie said of Pratt’s statement to the parole board.

Pratt admitted at the hearing that he was planning on leaving Kamloops and going to Vancouver, although he didn’t have a vehicle. In a conference call at the hearing, his parole ofﬁcer in Kamloops, Lorne Purcell, said he believed that Pratt planned to either hitchhike or steal a vehicle to leave town. “In my head, I didn’t realize I was getting out, so it was a shock. I didn’t know what to do,” he said. Pratt said he didn’t know anybody in Kamloops, but later said he stayed the night at a “kid’s” house that he knew. Purcell recommended Tuesday that Pratt not be released and serve additional time in jail. “We don’t feel he’s

manageable,” Purcell said. Doug De Patie met with members of the media after the hearing. He was satisﬁed with the parole board’s decision. In his victim impact statement, Doug De Patie called Pratt a “sociopath” who is his “own worst enemy.” Pratt, who was 16 at the time of the crime, received a nine-year sentence for killing De Patie. However, in April 2007 the B.C. Court of Appeal reduced his manslaughter sentence to seven years, factoring in credit for time served prior to sentencing. According to the National Parole Board, his full sentence was six years and two months and De Patie’s statutory release

period would end on July 10, 2012. During his sentencing the court heard that Pratt, an aboriginal, was raised by a single mother addicted to meth and he had been in and out of government care since he was 12. He had a Grade 8 education and admitted to being drunk daily after he turned 16. The B.C. Court of Appeal found that his youth and aboriginal background should have been given more consideration in the original sentence and the court emphasized Pratt’s rehabilitation as a factor in sentencing. GE Bridge traffic increasing by Glenda Luymes Postmedia Network

One year after the Albion ferry last traversed the Fraser, traffic on the Golden Ears Bridge is slowly increasing. In July, an average of 25,700 vehicles crossed the bridge daily, up from 19,600 in July 2009, according to new TransLink figures. “We are really close to where we should be [in terms of traffic projections],” spokesman Ken Hardie said Wednesday. “Of course, more is always better, but the numbers are consistently heading up.” As first reported in May, the lower than expected use of the tolled bridge means it will cost $4.8 million more to operate than originally estimated. But Hardie said the bridge traffic will likely continue to increase into the fall. And drivers aren’t the only ones embracing the new bridge. Businesses on both sides of the Fraser say new clients are taking advantage of the quick crossing. Laurie and Ted Hume once owned a concession stand beside the Albion ferry lineup in Maple Ridge. Instead of panicking when they realized the ferry was going to stop, they used it as a reason to start their own restaurant. Kingfishers Waterfront Bar & Grill has become a neighbourhood meeting place and a draw for

diners from across the Lower Mainland, including Langley, just over the new bridge. “It’s so beautiful and quiet here,” said Laurie. “You used to hear the engines and the cars going by, but now we have sturgeon and beavers and seals.” General manager Trevor Thiessen said the Albion ferry trafﬁc was mostly commuters who wouldn’t have wanted to spend time and money on a meal. “It certainly hasn’t hurt us,” he said of the new bridge. Business owners in Fort Langley, on the other side of the old ferry route, aren’t lamenting the ferry’s end either. “The trafﬁc is a lot slower now,” said Fort Langley BIA executive director Shirley Stewart. “It hasn’t changed business too much, except the customers are a little more diverse.” Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said in May that the

bridge had been a boon to his community as well. In the ﬁrst quarter of 2009, when the bridge wasn’t yet open, Maple Ridge approved development permits worth $24.8 million. That more than doubled to $58.4 million in the ﬁrst quarter of 2010. In June, the Canadian Real Estate Investment Network ranked Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows as the second best place to invest in property in B.C., behind Surrey and ahead of Abbotsford.ReMax Ridge Meadows realtor Justin Hennessey, who has worked in the area for 11 years, said he’s seeing more than double the usual prospective buyers from Langley at open houses. “We used to see about one in 10 people from Langley, and now it’s three or four,” he said. Off the top of his head, Hennessey said that an average single-family home in Maple Ridge costs about $500,000.

She is pursuing legal action for what happened to her. Gray was held for more than 30 hours at a Toronto detention centre. Her father, Philip, who lives in Maple Ridge, feared for her safety. On Monday, he said he was disappointed in safety precautions at the courthouse. “The police ordered 300 people into a courthouse that has a ﬁre code limit of 176 in the hallway,” said Philip Gray. “That to me, is a huge oversight in public safety. “Why did they tell everyone to come on the same day?” Police say the majority of the people in court Monday were arrested on June 26 in front of the Ontario legislature. Charge dropped for local G20 protestor

The processing of hundreds charged during the G20 summit in June continued Monday in a small Toronto courthouse — with the case of a Maple Ridge resident getting settled. Ofﬁcials in three courtrooms are taking care of the accused in assembly-line fashion. The Crown’s evidence is disclosed to the defendants and future hearing dates are set no more than a month from now, giving adequate time to review the evidence and obtain legal council. “The outcome of these cases will speak volumes about the degree to which Canada is or is not a democratic state,” said Natalie Gray, who had charges against her — for obstruction of a police ofﬁcer — withdrawn for lack of evidence. What was not lacking was the evidence of a circular welt on her left arm, which she says was caused by the use of rubber bullets or another non-lethal projectile used by Toronto police to diffuse the G20 protests on June 26 and 27.

Couple accused of ignoring injury after dog allegedly hit by vehicle SPCA says dog was seized and taken to a vet, but by then it was too late.

harges of animal cruelty have been laid against two Maple Ridge residents after they allegedly failed to seek proper veterinary care for their injured dog. The couple faces charges under both the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the Criminal Code of Canada. The SPCA was called to the residence in February after receiving a report that a dog had been hit by a car and was later seen limping. “When our constables contacted the owners, the couple admitted that they had not taken (their dog), a 15-month-old rottweiler mix, for veterinary care,” said Marcie Moriarty, general manager of cruelty investigations for the BC SPCA. “We issued an order for the dog to be taken to a clinic and they eventually took him in

for an examination but refused the treatment recommended by the veterinarian.” The dog, which was kept outdoors on a chain, was seized by SPCA constables and taken for ongoing veterinary care, but later had to be humanely euthanized after treatment options were exhausted. “This is a very sad example of an animal who was needlessly left to suffer,” said Moriarty. “It is important that pet guardians understand their moral and legal responsibility to ensure that their animals are not in distress.” If convicted, the two people face a ﬁne of up to $10,000, up to six months in jail and a prohibition on owning animals for a period of time determined by a judge. On Monday another local dog owner received a ﬁne and a 10-year ban after pleading guilty.

Poaching a big concern for some

Phil is still worried about salmon poaching, particularly by First Nations fishermen. He doesn’t blame the fisheries officers, though, as he says it’s just due to limited funding and resources. “They know when fisheries officers aren’t working, so that’s when they fish.” First Nations fishers have licenses for personal or ceremonial fishing, not commercial, said Phil. MLAs split on parks criticism

arks in B.C., including Maple Ridge’s Golden Ears, are not being thoroughly monitored or properly managed according to a report released by the auditor general on Monday, but not everyone agrees it’s a problem that can be remedied. Maple Ridge-Mission Liberal MLA Marc Dalton said the type of in-depth management recommended by Doyle would be very expensive and possibly not ﬁnancially feasible considering the 13.5 million hectares that have to be dealt with. “There’s not a lot of fat to be cut,” he said. “As you can see from the [reaction to the] HST there is not an appetite for increased taxation.” Michael Sather, NDP MLA for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows, rejected the argument. “Parks pay for themselves,” he said, noting that a failure to maintain and manage parks could result in less

tourism. Auditor general John Doyle’s report singled out Pinecone Burke Provincial Park as an example of a park with no management plan. Dalton said park reservations are up 16 per cent this year, and those fees go back into the parks, but he stressed the lack of available funds. “Healthcare and education have been putting the squeeze on everything else,” he said. Dalton said Doyle had stepped out of the traditional role of the auditor general by asking the government to spend more money as opposed to rating the efﬁciency of its spending. Sather said the report was overdue. “The Campbell government has been neglecting parks for a long time,” he said. Sather identiﬁed irregular garbage pickup and the cancellation of nature programs as problems the government needs to address. “People know less. They’re not being educated

anymore,” he said. Sather expressed concern the government doesn’t have an accurate appraisal of the plants and animals in parks, leaving them with no knowledge of species that may be in danger. “The manpower isn’t there anymore to do biological studies,” he said. “We need an environment minister who’s willing to go to bat for the environment.” Sather said trying to reserve a campsite online can be an all-day activity. Dalton said having online reservations has allowed staff to be used as efficiently as possible. The auditor general’s report criticized the Ministry of Environment for failing to define what constitutes a healthy park. “The ministry [of environment] does not have sufficient and reliable information to determine what the management actions should be for the conversation of ecological integrity,” the report states. While the report called for larger parks, Dalton said

that move could be a poor decision for the economy. “As we allocate land for parks it reduces our economic base,” he said. “It limits our opportunity to create wealth and jobs.” Dalton questioned the report’s request for greater transparency and periodic reporting to the legislature, which he said was already being done. “There is public accountability,” he said. NDP environment critic Rob Fleming said without a change in policy, B.C.’s protected areas are “completely unsustainable.” Fleming said a major problem was with the provincial government’s priorities. “They have consistently put a number of the premier’s pet projects above parks management,” he said.

Murray, who had no prior criminal record, chose not to speak on his behalf before sentencing. During his year of house arrest, Murray cannot be outside his home without permission for more than two hours unless there is an emergency. Dossa ordered Murray

to take two counselling programs and not to view any pornography. Police will also have immediate access to any computer equipment that can store pictures or videos during Murray’s probation. Dossa said the sentence needed to reﬂect that possession of child pornography isn’t a victimless crime due to its exploitation of minors. Murray had to provide a DNA sample after sentencing.

More than a year has passed since the Albion ferries last set sail across the Fraser River, but still the two vessels remain docked as they wait to be sold. Drew Snider, TransLink’s public information officer, said that there have been some expressions of interest from prospective buyers, but there’s “still nothing firm.” The ferries are currently tied up and there is still some staff maintaining a presence at the docks for security purposes. Staff will also periodically fire up the engines of the vessels in order to keep them in good enough shape for a buyer to be able

to run them. TransLink has set the value of the ferries at about $1 million each, and a broker is still trying to work a deal, said Snider. “The market for commercial marine vessels is a buyer’s market, so it’s a matter of hanging in there.” At one point the ferries were even posted for sale on Craig’s List. The Albion vessels are 137 feet long, have a gross tonnage of 347 tonnes, are powered by two 350-horsepower diesel engines and carry about 32 vehicles and ﬁve crew per trip. The Klatawa is the older of the two Vancouver Shipyards vessels and was built in 1972. The ferries last set sail on July 31, 2009 at 12:30 p.m.

Free speech under siege

The case of Maple Ridge’s Natalie Gray reveals the sad state of free speech in Canada today. On Monday, Gray had a charge of obstruction of a police ofﬁcer during the June G20 summit in Toronto dropped — withdrawn for lack of evidence. By now, most people have heard about the riots that happened in Toronto during the summit. But Gray was involved in a peaceful protest the following day. A group of people had gathered outside the makeshift detention centre that was set up for the summit. Gray and others sang songs and welcomed detainees when they were released. It was all documented on video. But police, possibly jacked up from the adrenaline from the previous day’s events, stormed the crowd to move them out. Gray alleges that she was shot twice by police using rubber bullets. She has the welts to show for it. She was then arrested and held for more than 30 hours at a Toronto detention centre. Now, magically, the charge has been dropped. Did police simply want to get as many protesters out of the way as possible until after the summit? Arresting people on vague charges and then dropping them weeks later is one way to do it. Now Gray is planning to sue the police over her injuries. Those will eventually heal. The damage to democracy will take longer.

Safer roads are just around the corner. At least that’s the goal behind new drinking-and-driving legislation that will come into force. As of Sept. 20, police in B.C. will be armed with the toughest legal tools in Canada to get impaired drivers off the roads, faster and for longer periods of time. According to Solicitor General Mike de Jong, impaired driving has been on the rise in B.C. — an alarming revelation that spurred the province to make it easier to remove the perpetrators from their vehicles. When the new law comes into effect, drinking drivers who fail the Criminal Code standard 0.08 per cent breath test will be immediately banned from driving for 90 days, will have their vehicle impounded for 30 days, and will be fined $500 — aside from possible criminal charges that carry additional fines and potential jail terms. The new provincial legislation adds a “warning” range to the standard breathalyser test. A reading between 0.05 and the criminally liable 0.08 per cent will earn the errant driver a three-day driving ban and a $200 fine. Getting caught at that level more than once within five years ups the ante to a seven-day ban and $300 the second time, and a 30-day ban with a $400 fine for a third time. Research has shown that, although below the Criminal Code’s radar, drivers with blood alcohol levels between 0.05 and 0.08 per cent are seven times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than sober drivers are. Numbers of impaired driving charges rose 18 per cent from 2008 to 2009. Input needed on area for dogs Editor:

Re: Jerry Sulina Park I am writing in concern about the secrecy surrounding the implementation of a separate area for dogs. We like many others have been walking our dogs at this park for a lot of years with no problems. The rules are unwritten and always followed by people. If your dog is friendly he is off leash. If he (she) is not then keep it leashed. This is how everyone, including the people just there for a walk, know whether to approach the dog or not. It works well. I am not aware of any problems to date. Most dog owners attempt to keep the dogs away from the bikers. Unfortunately they are not always as considerate. On more occasions than I care to recall they will ride up fast and furious behind you with no warning they are coming.

Then they will yell at you for having the gall to be walking on the dike. Now there are also many very considerate and friendly bikers as well. We all try to get along and respect each other. This being said — why are they changing things without talking to the citizens who use this park daily year round? Surely we deserve some input to any changes being planned for this park. Trail cold on year-old theft

Ridge Meadows RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit continues to investigate a robbery of more than $100,000. On June 20, 2009, at approximately 4:15 p.m. an employee of a business was taking deposits to the Royal Bank in the Meadow Ridge mall on 207 Street in Maple Ridge. As the employee got out of his vehicle, with the cash and securities in a box, he noticed a male in a white van parked behind him. As the victim started to walk away from his car, the suspect got out of the van and ran up to him. The suspect had an object in his hand, and he demanded the victim place the box on the ground, which he did. The suspect grabbed the box, and quickly drove away. The victim did not get a good look at the suspect, and noted he was a nonwhite male, with a bandana covering most of his face. To date a number of inquiries have been made, but none have produced a good lead on a suspect. Inspector Derren Lench said, “I’d like to bring this incident to the attention of all business owners, and operators. Anyone who has to make these deposits of money, cheques, or other securities, to take extra precautions when doing so.” “Always be aware of your surroundings, and person(s), or vehicles, in the area. Vary

your routine, making these deposits at different times of the day, and changing the route you take to a ﬁnancial institute.” “If you notice anyone, or anything, you feel is out of the ordinary, do not get out of your vehicle, and call police at your ﬁrst opportunity.”

760 pot plants seized by cops

Ridge Meadows RCMP Street Enforcement Unit executed a search warrant on Tuesday, arresting three persons, and seizing more than 760 marijuana plants in varying stages of growth. The policing team entered a home in the 26900 block of 108 Avenue in Maple Ridge just after 8 a.m., locating two men, aged 64 and 36 years, and a 61-year-old female present in the home. The three have been released from custody, and the investigation is continuing.

Road mattress starts van fire

A mattress getting stuck under a van is being blamed for a vehicle ﬁre. Ridge Meadows RCMP and Maple Ridge Fire Department responded to a van being on ﬁre on the Lougheed Highway, near 240 Street, at approximately 1:20 p.m. on Wednesday. Police blocked the road

Citizen catches school vandals

A citizen is being credited with stopping some vandalism to a local school. At approximately 9:20 p.m. on Monday Aug. 23 the citizen came across four young people throwing paint balls at Kanaka Creek elementary school. Two young boys ran away, but the two young girls stayed while police were called down. The two teenaged girls volunteered to clean up the paint, which was washable, while they were turned over to their parents.

Ridge Meadows RCMP are investigating the theft of a storage trailer and contents from the 12200 block of Harris Road. The theft occurred between six and 7 p.m. Monday.

Popular Opry gets cancelled One of Maple Ridge’s most successful local live theatre productions has hit the dusty trail, at least for this year. The 2010 Ridge Meadows Opry, which has consistently drawn large crowds to the Arts Centre and Theatre in Maple Ridge, has been cancelled, according to Opry president and chair Andy Cleven. The Opry was a live event that put its focus on cowboy culture, with singers, musicians, dancers, comedians and even poets taking the stage. Money raised went to charity. According to a news release, there have been ongoing financial challenges faced by the Ridge Meadows Opry Society, a not-for-profit organization, since its inception seven years ago, in large part due to the costs of producing such a technically demanding show - even with a volunteer cast and crew. “In spite of those challenges the Opry has always managed to meet its financial obligations,” said Cleven. “It has also managed to make significant financial contributions to the

Asante Centre for FASD over the years from the proceeds of these shows. Unfortunately, rising costs associated with marketing and promotion of this fundraising production, plus increased competition from similar shows, has left the board of directors in the unenviable position of being forced to cancel this year’s production in order to avoid ﬁnancial difﬁculties.” According to the latest ACT calendar, there is a show called Barney Bentall and the Grand Cariboo Society scheduled for November, just weeks after the Opry would normally take place. “The Ridge Meadows Opry Society will sit down in the coming months to determine the long-term future of the Opry,” said Cleven. “We hope to be able to have better news for the community sometime soon. “The society wants to take this opportunity to thank its many sponsors, media and the community as a whole for your unwavering support over the past seven years. It has been a wonderful experience for us all, and we’ll see what the future brings.”

or most students in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, school is back in session Sept. 7. For football players at Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary (SRTS), classes started this past week, and the gridiron was their classroom. SRTS junior football is entering its inaugural year, which unofﬁcially kicked off Monday with the Titans’ ﬁrst practice at their east Maple Ridge school. Titans football, under head coach Tom Levesque and assistant coaches James White and Mark Ogloff, is a program a couple of years in the making. When Levesque joined school staff two years ago he was approached by principal Mike Keenan, who said there was interest in launching a football program at SRTS. “I had some experience,” said Levesque, a special education teacher, “so I said I would be totally interested in helping out and getting it started.” He added, “We started up this past spring. We put together a squad for guys who wanted to play junior [football]. We have a mix right now of kids who were in Grades 8 and 9 last year

and who are coming up...” The team consists of 30 players in Grades 8-10. Some of the Titans will be tapped to play offence as well as defence. Levesque is setting the bar high, even though the Titans’ program is in its infancy. “We expect to do lots of good things. We are totally putting things together right now - we are starting with a new coaching staff and a new set of players - but we really, really want to do well this year,” Levesque said. “We’re excited.” The team will get its first taste of game action at a jamboree at Terry Fox Secondary in Port Coquitlam Sept. 9, and Levesque said “we’re expecting to see good things out of our players then.” Levesque said he and the coaches did “a lot of work” at a spring training camp, to see what kind of athletes they were working with, and the skill set each of the players brings to the field. “We are working with them [the players] to see where they fit, and also to try to put together the best football team we can,” Levesque said. The Titans are in the B.C. High School Football Association’s Eastern Conference along with ‘AA’ junior varsity squads from Pitt Meadows,

Abbotsford Collegiate, Langley, Mission, Robert Bateman (Abbotsford), and Rick Hansen (Abbotsford). The team’s ﬁrst regular season game is Sept. 15 in Richmond against the host Hugh Boyd Trojans. SRT’s football program is one of just two in the school district, meaning that any students attending Westview, Garibaldi or Maple Ridge Secondary schools would have to transfer in order to play high school football. School district 42 has an open transfer policy that allows students to attend any school they choose, but Keenan said prospective football players won’t be given priority. Keenan also noted that students in SRT’s catchment are given priority if they’re attending a different school. Out of catchment students are accepted only if there is space in their grade level. Another problem that SRT will run into is that the Grade 10 students on this year’s football team won’t be able to play next year, as there still won’t be a varsity level team in place. Despite that, this year’s Grade 10s are counting on playing varsity football in their senior year. Keenan has informed parents of this and many of the players will continue to play community football as well. “A big commitment is expected [to play SRT football],” said Keenan. “But we will work in partnership with the Knights so that athletes can play both. “In fact we encourage players to play for both programs.” SRT isn’t funding the football program completely by itself, and according to Keenan, no other programs needed to suffer. “We did agree as an athletics department to keep things like new uniform purchases to a minimum during this period.” Keenan said that although he doesn’t have a total cost for starting the program, SRT did receive some ﬁnancial support from their Parental Advisory Committee, BC High School Football, SRT revenue and parents.

Synchro swimmers win at provincials The Haney Neptunes synchronized swimmers ended their summer on a high note as they competed at the Provincials in Kamloops from Aug. 18-19. The entire team was able finish in the top ten in every division they competed in. Kate Campbell and Brittany Sweet won gold in their intermediate duet as well as Gold and Silver in their intermediate figures. Kate Evans and Evangeline Kesteven won gold in their duet and finished fifth and second, respectively, in their beginner figures. Kristen Irvine and Sara Lynum won silver in their duet and finished third and eighth in their beginner figures.

Evans, Kesteven, Kristen Irvine and Lynum won gold in their team routine as well. Juliana and Manuella Silva ﬁnished in fourth place for their intermediate duet and eighth in their intermediate ﬁgures. The Neptunes will be holding their fall registration from Aug. 28-29 at the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre’s pre-school room. “We would love to see more girls come and join our group of girls,” said Joy Evans, director of synchronized swimming for the Haney Neptunes. Canada is on the cusp of a major change. The ﬁrst wave of our country’s aging baby boomers is about to turn 65. Healthcare jobs on the rise continued Dental Assistant Dental assistants can perform a number of duties in support of a dentist. These can include polishing teeth, applying ﬂuoride, preparing patients for dental examinations, preparing dental instruments and taking x-rays. Dental assistants require training in a college program and, in all provinces but Quebec, licensing is mandatory. Once graduated, Dental assistants can expect to earn about $16.51 per hour. The growth of employment for this ﬁeld is above average and expected to remain as such due, not only to the aging population, but also to the increase in Canadians with insurance coverage and improvements in dental technology.

Pharmacy assistants require completion of secondary school and a college program in Pharmacy Assistant or Pharmacy Technician training. Once completed, a Pharmacy Assistant can expect to earn an hourly wage of about $14.51. Nurse (Nurse Aide) Nurse Aides attend to the needs of patients in hospitals, nursing homes and other health care facilities. They may be involved in answering call signals, serving meals, taking patient’s blood pressure, collecting ﬂuid specimens, maintaining inventory of supplies and performing maintenance tasks such as cleaning and sterilizing equipment. A Nurse Aide usually requires a college program with practical, on-thejob training. Once graduated, a Nurse Aide can expect to earn about $14.77 per hour. The next few years will bring many changes with them.
