A
Inmate charged with attempted murder
An inmate at Fraser Regional Correctional Centre has been charged with attempted murder after severely injuring another inmate on May 19, 2010. Alexander Tanasescu, 27, is charged with attempting to kill a 36-year-old inmate. Marnie Mayhew, spokesperson for B.C. Corrections, said the victim is still in hospital almost two months after the attack. Mayhew said the corrections branch has completed its own internal investigation. “Our own internal review found that staff responded properly and appropriately and followed required procedures,” she said.

Crime Gun shots heard, bullet casing found in residential area Ridge Meadows RCMP are investigating a complaint of gun shots in the 12000 block of 223 Street. On Monday, July 12, just after 9:30 p.m., police received a report of five or six gun shots being heard. Police immediately attended to the area, but did not locate anyone who had been a victim. A further search, with the assistance of a police service dog from the RCMP Lower Mainland District Police Dog Section located a spent bullet’s casing. Superintendent Dave Walsh said, “Anytime the safety of our citizens is jeopardized, police take that file extremely seriously. We are actively investigating this incident, but have few leads to follow up on. t’s summer and school is out — except for a small group of Grade 1 and 2 students who are boosting their reading skills in the school district’s Reading Racers and Apprentis Lecteur programs. There are many reasons why some students are still struggling to read at the end of Grade 1, said Lisa Jakeaway, elementary facilitator for the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district, and the Reading Racers program was designed to give them a boost during the long summer break when some kids regress in their reading. In addition to better reading skills, the most important outcome is a growth in confidence and in a desire to read and learn, said Amanda Levesque, one of the Reading Racers teachers at Golden Ears Elementary School. In addition to three English classes, there is a French class at Pitt Meadows Elementary called Apprentis Lecteurs where 16 Grade 2 students are practicing reading in French. At Reading Racers, the students are in groups with other students who are closer to their reading level. “All of a sudden, they’re not the only ones who are having trouble reading,” Levesque said. The Grade 1 students get four intense literacy-focused groups throughout the morning, and when they leave, they take along a book and a poem to read at home. Fun activities like playing in the gym are incorporated into the program as well. This is the seventh year

the program is being offered in SD42, but it has been cut from previous years. Last year, Reading Racers was a full-day program with seven classes of students from kindergarten to Grade 3. There were 112 students in the program in the summer of 2009. This year because of budget constraints and after a reassessment of the priorities of the program, it has been reduced to four classes with strictly Grade 1 students in the English program and Grade 2 in the French program. The sessions only

said. However, the school district reassessed the program this year and came to the conclusion that from a financial perspective it didn’t make sense to take the children off-site in the afternoons. This year, the afternoon recreational component was taken out reducing it to a half-day program and the focus was put strictly on improving literacy. “It’s not a daycare - it’s a reading intervention program,” Vandergugten said. Each classroom has a
teacher and an assistant, but the program also draws on high school and teacher volunteers who help the “emerging readers.” While there are about half the number of children compared to last year, Vandergugten said he thought they were able to offer the program to those students who were most in need. According to the school district’s achievement contract, the students who attended Reading Racers last year all improved in their reading scores during the four-week program.

The body of a man found in a shallow grave on 112 Avenue in late June has been identified by the Ridge Meadows RCMP as Maple Ridge resident Robert Trouton, aged 52. A police dog found the body on June 24 when Ridge
Meadows RCMP officers were executing a search warrant in the 28000 block of 112 Avenue in Whonnock. The body was found buried in a shallow grave and a body part was sticking out. At that point, the search was halted and it was treated as a possible homicide and the Integrated Forensic Investigation Unit was called
in. Police said the body in the shallow grave had been there for “some time” and it was exhumed by forensic specialists. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team was also involved in the investigation along with the Ridge Meadows RCMP Major Crime Section. At the moment, the death
is being treated as having occurred from natural causes, but foul play has not been entirely ruled out. Police and the B.C. Coroner’s Service are still waiting for the final autopsy results. Police also found 1,000 marijuana plants inside the residence. The man who lived at the residence, Stuart Ernest Gardner, 55, was
charged with neglect of a dead body, production of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. Gardner has been charged previously with theft under $5,000, personation with intent to gain advantage, driving while prohibited and impaired driving.

andowners along the North Alouette River are demanding answers from the District of Maple Ridge about when a promised hydrological study on the river will be completed. They also want to know what’s happening with an application by a farmer on 224 Street to put fill on 6.8 hectares of his property and to build a new berm. The application was forwarded to the agricultural land commission in January 2009 and adjacent homeowners are worried it could cause flooding problems on their land. Dian Murrell and Rosemary Webster came to council Tuesday night with their concerns. Murrell said the hydrological study was supposed to be completed by the end of 2008 but residents are still waiting. “If one property owner keeps raising their property and that particular property is close to the river and on the river then it distributes the water to other properties, flooding them more,” said Murrell. “We want to make sure that has been reviewed by an engineer and according
to the soil deposit bylaws they can’t deposit soil if it’s going to impact neighbours heavily and so we’re very concerned that if this one goes through that it will.” As for the hydrology study, Murrell said they want a timeline for when it will be done and then to know how it will be used. “The one thing that happens down in this area is we can’t do this until we have the hydrology study, we can’t do that and permits shouldn’t be allowed and yet they do keep going through,” said Murrell. “One of the things we want done is under the 224 Street bridge the build up under there is quite high and of course they don’t want to do it until the hydrology study is done.” The District of Maple Ridge convened the Alouette River Flood Management Task Force, which made a series of recommendations in 2008 to try and mitigate future flooding. One of the recommendations was a hydrological study of the river. “We’re trying to make sure this task force was not in vain, number one,” said Murrell. “We did do a lot of work and we came out of it with a lot of hope and that
hope is waning.” Rosemary Webster said she’s worried her property could be “wiped out” if a neighbour is allowed to put the fill on his property and build the berm. “Why is one person allowed to do all of this and put everybody around him in jeopardy just because he wants to increase his crop yield? That’s ridiculous,” she said. Meanwhile, Webster says she becomes more nervous every year the rainy season approaches. “We’re going to be getting into flood season again rainy season in the fall and I have no idea what’s going to happen. The stress level that we’re under here every time it starts raining and we don’t even have to look at the (river gauges) because all we need to do is look out the window here at the river and as soon as we start to see it coming up my anxiety level starts creeping up and I’m thinking is this going to be it,” said Webster. She has a message for the district: “Do something about it.” “I don’t know what it’s going to take. Loss of life or our place being completely wiped out,” she said. Russ Carmichael, director

We have lots of farming activity on that land,” he said. Farm activity includes growing potatoes, hazelnuts, heather and poplar trees, said Robson. Fry said the application would likely go before ALC commissioners sometime in the summer. “They’ll more than likely visit the property and meet with the applicant and then they will decide whether the proposal is one that they can approve or one that they would deny,” he said.

The City of Pitt Meadows received a cheque for $3,325,925 on Thursday morning - a low-interest loan of just over $3 million and a grant of about $300,000 to help fund the South Bonson Community Centre, which is currently under construction. Treasury Board President and Minister for Asia-Pacific Gateway Stockwell Day came to Pitt Meadows to deliver the cheque, which was part of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Green Municipal Fund. The South Bonson Community Centre, which is currently under construction and is expected to be ready in September, 2011, will be LEED - Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - certified and building emissions are expected to be 55.8 per cent lower than buildings built to standard codes. Day pointed out that there are 730 Green Municipal Fund projects throughout the country, initiated at the local level. “It’s all about individual programs adding up,” Day said.

Trio charged with invading grow op
Ridge Meadows RCMP have laid charges against three men for a break and enter, and charged the homeowner of the residence for production of a controlled substance. At approximately 4:20 a.m. on Tuesday, police were called to the 12200 block of 244 Street in regards to suspicious activity taking place. A group of men were seen near a shed on a property, trying to get into the shed. Upon arrival, police noted a marijuana growing operation in the shed. A police dog from the RCMP Lower Mainland District’s Police Service Dog section
was brought in, and the three men were taken into custody. Police then arrested the owner of the residential property for the illegal growing operation. A search warrant was granted, and police seized 265 marijuana plants, along with several pounds of marijuana that had been harvested. Coquitlam residents Hyun Shin, 21, and Yonatan Kassa, 25, and Hankil Lee, 21, from Port Moody, have all been charged with break and enter with the intent to commit an indictable offence, and assault. Peter Martin, 37, has been charged with
production of a controlled substance. All four were remanded in police custody until their first court appearance on Wednesday, where Martin and Lee were released, while Kassa and Shin remained in custody. “This file illustrates how the police and the community can come together and combat the illegal growing of marijuana,” said Staff Sgt. Good signs for local fishing industry
It’s still too early to tell, but many signs are pointing to a healthy return of sockeye salmon in the Fraser River this summer. “The forecast for Fraser River sockeye is in the range of seven to 11 million,” Barry Rosenberger, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans area director for Interior B.C., said Tuesday. “In the Columbia River this year, it’s three times the forecast, and most of them are bound for Canada. Right now, the Skeena River is coming back at about twice the forecast.” Those numbers buck the trend of recent years’ disappointing data for the
much-desired sockeye. Last summer’s sockeye season was a disaster. While 10.6 million Fraser River sockeye were forecast to return, the final tally reached a mere 1.4 million - the worst in 50 years. Rosenberger said the DFO estimates threequarters of the Early Stuart run has entered the Fraser and 87,000 of them have been accounted for. The 2010 forecast is for 110,000 in total. He said the Early Stuart run is the smallest of the stock groupings on the Fraser River system. Every year, they must swim up the Fraser and Nechako rivers to their spawning
grounds around Stuart Lake, 150 kilometres west of Prince George. “The Early Stuart run will still be going on for another few weeks,” said Rosenberger. It is rarely opened for commercial fishermen, and the planned closure for Early Stuarts for the native fishery “would be over at the end of this weekend,” said Rosenberger. But Ernie Crey, fisheries adviser for the Sto: lo Tribal Council, said that opening isn’t soon enough. There is no formal deal between the Sto: lo and the DFO for this year’s salmon season, he said. — Postmedia

Politicians want trust on garbage
Maple Ridge council joined a growing chorus of voices Monday opposed to Metro Vancouver’s proposal to incinerate garbage at waste-to-energy facilities. Some, like Delta Mayor Lois Jackson, who also serves as the Metro Vancouver chairwoman, support the plan. She points to a consultant’s report that says continuing to bury Metro Vancouver’s garbage for the next 35 years will cost $1.5 billion. The report said that burning the garbage in a waste-to-energy plant will result in a profit of $20 million for the region over the same period. She said in a recent interview that she’s concerned some councils are making decisions based more on emotions instead of science. But other communities aren’t buying that argument. Vancouver is against the waste-to-energy facilities. The Fraser Valley Regional District is against it, saying that the facilities will increase pollution wafting into the eastern part valley that already gets big city smog. In Maple Ridge, the issue of science was one that Councillor Mike Morden addressed, saying that there are “all kinds of studies both ways.” Coun. Craig Speirs was more blunt about the impact of incinerators: “There’s no magic to it. They do pollute. They pollute a lot. If we did one in region it would be the largest single point source of pollution in the region.” Morden made an excellent point by saying that if the incinerators are approved, they should be government run and not farmed out to a private corporation because such a business would be only interested in profit. Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore, who is the chair of the solid waste management committee, said there’s “no denying incineration does cause some pollutants” but he said incinerators offset pollutants created elsewhere, like in landfills. He said modelling conducted for Metro Vancouver showed waste-to-energy would “contribute less than one per cent to the overall air quality.” So we have some on council saying the incinerators would definitely be a dangerous polluter and we have some from Metro Vancouver’s board saying any pollution would be minor and not worth worrying about. The problem is that if these incinerators are approved, once they are built if they are found to be polluting can the region get out of a long-term contract with a private company? Does any government agency have the funding to do the kind of testing that will consistently assess pollution levels? And will this kind of project send the wrong message to residents that they don’t have to bother recycling anymore because the trash will just get burned? The public is being asked to trust certain politicians and Metro Vancouver staff that they will make sure we are well protected. Re: An alternate ‘theory’ on Dziekanski, TIMES Opinion, July 6 The article by Lyn Cockburn gives me the opportunity to also add my “alternate theory,” which has been on my mind from the time of the unfortunate incident of Robert Dziekanski’s death. Let me stress that this does not in any way defend the actions of the RCMP, but I do have some questions. Seeing that it took at least seven years of planning to get Robert so far as to immigrate to Canada, how come he did not even have a basic knowledge of the English language, enough to make himself understood and to ask for directions? And since his mother had been in Canada for obviously even longer than that, was there no way she could have familiarized herself with the airport in order to know how to find her son? Failing all that and knowing the language difficulty, should he then not have carried a note explaining who he was and why there might be a problem? It seems to me that the outcome would very likely

It’s then given to farmers and landscapers as a fertilizer. In San Francisco, restaurant and grocery food and green waste is collected and biodegraded by nitrifying bacteria until it’s black gold: top soil. It’s then spread throughout Napa Valley for the vineyards. Perhaps someone could invest in a similar idea for the north Fraser Valley. I read that Covanta has offered to build a WTE plant free, which should be a clue that there is more to WTE than meets the eye. While the air pollutants are a major concern there is still not much said about the ash residue, which is said to be between 10 and 30 per cent. To give you an idea of what that would look like: If Covanta should choose to build a plant capable of processing 40,000 tons per year the ash residue would be enough to cover over 1,000 acres a foot deep over a 25-year contract at 30-per-cent residue. In some European countries that ash is considered hazardous waste and has to be landfilled accordingly. If we divert 70 per cent through reduce, reuse and recycle, the 30-per-cent residue would not be hazardous waste. Should a WTE plant qualify as an independent power producer (IPP) under the Liberal green power plan, I would assume that if (due to environmental concerns) the plant was ordered closed some authority would be expected to compensate Covanta for the cost of their plant and the loss of income from the power it would have produced by the end of its contract. While humans may think

No date has yet been set for the festival, which usually
happens in August. The TIMES has tried repeatedly to find out what is happening with the jazz and blues festival but hasn’t been given any information from organizers. Kelso will fund his new festival by charging businesses $100 to set up a booth at the festival site. Admission will be free for attendees. “I want as many people to come out and enjoy the day even if that means making no money myself,” he said. ❚ The festival will include a kids area. To celebrate the 100th years of B.C. Association of Agricultural Fairs and Exhibitions, Country Fest - July 24-25 - with the assistance of the Pitt Meadows Museum, their volunteers and School District 42 student volunteers, will feature a heritage display. The display, which will be situated in the lobby of the Golden Ears Curling club, will showcase 109 years of fairs with signage from the centennial in 2001, displays from the museum and some hands-on activities using heritage equipment to interest all ages. Other fairs in B.C. celebrating their centennial in 2010 are PNE, Abbotsford Agrifair, Grand Forks and Luxton while the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Agricultural Association (Country Fest) celebrates its 109th birthday this year. Unlike most, our local fair has changed its name many times from Maple Ridge Fall Fair, Maple Ridge Annual Exhibition, Maple Ridge - Pitt Meadows Exposition, Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Fall Fair, Maple Ridge Centennial Fall Fair, North Fraser Valley Exhibition, Ridge Meadows Fair and Maple Ridge Fair. The past directors of this organization certainly believe in the old saying “a change is as good as a rest.” “Changing the event’s names is confusing to some but changing with the times is crucial to the success of any event,” said a Country Fest news release. “Recognizing and striving to find the entertainment needs of all family members is one of the many strong qualities of the organization. River group hosts tours to promote efforts T
he Alouette River Management Society has spotted the first few sockeye salmon coming through the diversion stream at Allco Park in the past week — as of Tuesday when they held their first open house of the summer, 11 fish had been spotted coming through. Last year, about 700 sockeye were expected but only 45 came through the hatchery, so this year’s early numbers are looking good, according to ARMS acting executive director Abby Cruickshank. ARMS held the first of three summer open houses on Tuesday, and about 15 visitors to the hatchery were able to feed salmon in the holding pool and learn the names of the five types of salmon before education coordinator Carleigh Smart took the group on a tour of the hatchery and to look at the plants in Allco Park. The group learned to identify common berries and trees and were warned of the dangers of eating elderberries and touching devil’s club plants. The society is holding open houses throughout the summer to bring the public out to the facility and raise awareness about their work. On July 27 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., ARMS will be hosting its second open house that will include a walk and talk through the Hatchery at 1:30 and a scavenger hunt through ALLCO Park. The River Heritage Centre will also be open for viewing and some crafts and games will be available for the kids. On Aug. 7 from 7 to 9 p.m., ARMS will be hosting its third open house around a campfire. Come hear the local legends, mythical and true, while roasting marshmallows around a glowing fire next to the Alouette River. There are also selfguided tours of some of the highlights of ALLCO Park and brochures for these can be picked up at the River Heritage Centre. Bawn B. hiked and took long walks with her dog before she was hit in a car crash (the defendant went through a red light and struck her right front fender). After the accident, she suffered ongoing back pain, especially when sitting for a long time, walking up stairs and going on longer walks. She moved to a smaller acreage and needed help with chores. It turned out that Bawn had degenerative arthritis before the accident (even though she had no symptoms), which the accident hastened and aggravated. However, even without the accident, the arthritis would most likely have started to soon cause her pain and stiffness anyway. Is the defendant (and ICBC) still responsible for her injuries? If you have a pre-existing medical condition, BC courts look at two different legal principles to determine how damages should be assessed. In a “thin skull” situation, the pre-existing condition makes you more susceptible to injury, but if you weren’t involved in the accident, it would not flare up and cause symptoms. Here, the defendant must take you as they find you. If you have a thinner skull than average (and the average skull would not have cracked in the accident), so be it – the defendant must still compensate you for all your losses flowing from your fractured skull. On the other hand, in a “crumbling skull” situation, the defendant isn’t responsible for all your post-accident symptoms. If you have a pre-existing arthritic condition which is aggravated by the accident, and ICBC proves that you likely would suffer arthritis symptoms in future, ICBC isn’t liable for all your losses. The idea is that the law aims to put you back in the same position you were in before the accident (in so far as money can do that) – but not to put you in a better position. Typically, the court deducts a percentage off the total damages to reflect the “contingency” (probability) that the pain and limited movement would show up regardless of the accident.
deduction was appropriate because her degenerative condition was “severe.” Damages for her pain and suffering, which were assessed at $55,000, were reduced by 25%; her total compensation amounted to some $93,000. With Cheri-Lynne G., however, the BC Supreme Court deducted only 10%. Hit head-on by a street sweeper, she suffered injuries to her ribs and left shoulder plus a sprain to her neck and back. At the time, she was a skating instructor. Before the accident, she had mild degeneration in her cervical spine that caused her to miss some work. After the accident, she also hurt her knee rollerblading and took three months off work. Soon after returning to work, she found a new administrative position because she couldn’t do her job as a skating instructor as well as before. The court concluded that Cheri-Lynne’s duties as a skating instructor were aggravated by the injuries she received in the car crash. But, the court said, there was also a “real and significant chance that the plaintiff’s pre-existing injuries and the injury suffered after the accident would have shortened the plaintiff’s career as a skating instructor, regardless of the injuries from the accident.” Damages for her pain and suffering were assessed at $67,500 ($75,000 minus 10%); her total award was just under $100,000. Funds raised from the June, 2010 campaign will support scientists and clinicians at the Vancouver Prostate Centre. This team of some of the brightest research minds in Canada has been studying the molecular and cellular events involved in the process whereby cancers become resistant to hormone withdrawal therapy of prostate cancer patients. They have found that a protein called the “androgen receptor” is critical for this type of treatment resistance and that by eliminating this protein they can cause many tumours to die. Recently, they have had an exciting breakthrough discovery of an entirely new class of drugs that can effectively inhibit, and in some cases, eliminate this protein. With the support of Prostate Cancer Canada and Safeway, they can continue to focus exclusively on further developing this promising research. ast year, the Dressler family was new to Maple Ridge and 12 year-old Nicole found herself popular at the first block party in her Albion neighbourhood. “I met our new neighbours at the party and soon found myself babysitting children in the area,” said Nicole. This was a networking benefit neighbours Alan Robbie and Donna Stevenson hadn’t predicted when they and some others invited everyone in their 45-house development for a block party. “About one hundred people attended and there was something for every age, including face painting, balloon animals, water balloons, piñatas and live musical entertainment,” said Robbie. “I think, in all, everyone had a great time and welcomed the opportunity to relax with neighbours that you normally just see drive
by in their vehicles.” Later this month Robbie’s neighbourhood in Albion will be gathering for their second annual block party helped with partial funding from a $100 block party grant. The summer block party season is in full swing. Family tradition continues with Canadian Tire money
T
he St.-Amour family in Maple Ridge has created a three-generation family tradition involving Canadian Tire money and a cherished possession for each first-born child. The tradition continued recently when Spence St.Amour was able to buy his first bike with a giant wad of Canadian Tire money. The tradition began in 1960 when Spence’s Grandpa Steve St.-Amour was six years old. He and his dad and grandpa travelled to Ottawa from their home in Aylmer, Que. to go to Canadian Tire. He thought his dad and grandpa were looking for

Steve took his son to the store and asked him how he was going to pay for the bike he loved and he said he didn’t know but he said he would do anything. “I gave him a lunch bag and he opened it and it was just full of Canadian Tire money,” said Steve. Richard ran with the bike to the counter, forgetting the pile of Canadian Tire money and having to go back to collect it. “It was pretty amazing actually because when I was six years old your bike was your whole life,” said Richard. They recall it took quite a while for several staff
tools and he told them he was going to look at bikes. “I just sat there on the floor staring at my bicycle,” he said. The store manager asked him if he was going to buy the bike or if he could stop blocking the way. Then his grandpa and dad presented him with a stack of Canadian Tire money and told him to go buy his bike. “Inside I was just boiling with excitement. I had my bike,” he said. Steve said back in 1960 it took a long time to accumulate that much Canadian Tire money. The tradition continued in 1980 when Steve’s son
members to count all the money. However, that’s now changed. In 2010 when Spence got his bike the
manager was able to just put the Canadian Tire through a counting machine. Spence (pictured) was as delighted as his dad and
grandpa to get his first bike and to pay for it with a stack of Canadian Tire money. However, Steve jokes that kids now seem more into Wii than they are into their first bike. “(The manager) at Canadian Tire was excited because he’s heard about these stories but he’s never seen it,” said Steve. “He said that we had made his day.” Richard is vowing he’ll continue the tradition with his first-born grandchild, which pleases Steve. “A lot of the younger generation isn’t big on tradition. I think there’s something we’ve lost along the line,” said Steve.

It is with sorrow and a measure of relief, that we announce the passing of Douglas (Doug) Eivend Straker, loving Husband, Father and Papa. Born Sept. 22, 1950, Doug passed away in the early morning hours of July 12, 2010, from the unforgiving disease of ALS. Doug is survived by his wife of 37 years, Karen (Reed), his sons Jeff (Amber) and Peter (Andrea) and his grandchildren Danika, Taylor, Victoria, Nicholas and Lucia. He is also survived by his brother Robert (Pat) and his mother-in-law, Monica Reed. Doug will be fondly remembered by his large extended family and his wonderful friends. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Alex and Molly Straker, and his older brother, Richard. Doug enjoyed watching sports of all kinds. There is no funeral at Doug’s request but in honour of his love of sports, the family would like to invite you to a Tailgate Party on Saturday July 24th, 2010, from 1:00 - 4:00 pm at Albion Community Hall, north on 240th Street at Lougheed Hwy, Maple Ridge. Please join us in wearing your favourite sports apparel. The family would like to thank the staff at McKenney Creek Hospice for their kind care and attention to Doug. It was like he was at his own “Club Med”. No flowers by request, but donations in Doug’s memory to the ALS Society of BC, #208 - 1600 W 6th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V6J 1R3, would be gratefully appreciated.

On Deck Yong receives $5,000 bursary Pitt Meadows taekwondo athlete Yvette Yong received a $5,000 Team Investors Group Amateur Athletes Fund bursary. Investors Group annually awards 20 $5,000 bursaries to assist Canada’s elite amateur athletes with the costs of training and competition. “This bursary will help to fund national qualification events needed to help me prepare and qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London and bring home a gold medal for Canada,” Yong said. “I hope that I can serve as a role model for other young girls in my community to be active and to set goals in life ... and work hard to reach those dreams.” Yong won a gold in 2010 Canadian Senior National Championships, gold in the 2010 German Open, Silver in the 2010 U.S. Open and a bronze in the 2009 World Championships.

t’s not often that people under the age of 40 are inducted into hall of fames. For Leanne Ball and Tracy Townsend, being part of the induction class of 2010 is a rare and special honour. And a bit of a surprise, too. The two former ringette teammates were recognized last month when Ringette Canada honoured the 1996 and 2002 Canadian teams that were world champions. Ball, who was a goaltender and now calls Pitt Meadows home, went through a year-long gruelling tryout process to make the 2002 squad, which saw Canada edge archrival Finland for the world title. Both have fond memories of the teams. “When you travel for a month with a group of people that are so individually unique and skilled, the memories come fast and furious,” recalled Townsend. Canada needed overtime to defeat the Finns that time around. Prior to 2002, the national program had incorporated a true national team process, with numerous

Ball said that exercise, which involved a lot of travelling and training before ending up in Edmonton with a 3-1 triumph, was the most memorable part for her. “It’s way up there as an accomplishment,” she recalled. “It was more than the championship, but the whole process that stands out, just getting there. We had players from all over, the coaching staff and training staff were just amazing.” She didn’t play in the final, but was a standout in an earlier victory over Sweden. “Once you get to the world championships the competition is just Finland, the other teams weren’t that strong,” she said. “That final was a pretty cautious, real tight game.” Both players, who in the late 1990s headed overseas to play professionally in Finland, still remain passionate about the game – which was invented by a Canadian in 1963. ❚
