Conservation officers have put down a cougar who is believed to have killed two goats and was seen roaming around Webster’s Corners Elementary School. Tracking dogs located the cougar around 10 a.m. on Thursday in the vicinity of the school on 256 Street and Dewdney Trunk Road. Conservation officers felt it was necessary to kill the cougar due to its proximity to homes and the school. “The conservation officers feel there was only one cougar in the area, but no one can be 100-per-cent certain about that. Therefore we want to caution people in the area to be on the lookout for any cougars, and take proper precautions, and call us or (conservation officers) if they see one,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Inspector Derren Lench. Cindy Hoflin called authorities about the cougar after she found her two Pygmy goats, Happy Goatmore and Sparky, dead in their pen with bitemarks on their neck at around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. She turned around and started walking towards her barn, expecting to confront a dog. “I got about eight feet from the barn and (the cougar) popped its head out,” she said. Hoflin lives next to a daycare and her pen shares a fence with the daycare. Hoflin was concerned the cougar could have hurt one of the children who feed her goats from the other side of the playground fence. Conservation officers spent Tuesday and Wednesday trying to catch the elusive cat. “We saw the cat. It ran by the houndsman and into the creek,” said conservation officer Terry Myroniuk. They couldn’t track it from the water. Myroniuk said cougars are difficult to successfully relocate and don’t adapt well to captivity. Myroniuk said he hasn’t had to kill a cougar in six years as a conservation officer. “I hate having to be the executioner,” he said. — With files from Canwest News

he family of a 44-year-old man who has been left paralyzed on one side and unable to speak after he was assaulted at the Wolf Bar in Maple Ridge on June 13 is pleading with the public to come forward with any information about the assault. The assault on Del Parent, father of two, occurred around 2 a.m. at the bar, which is in the 22300 block of Lougheed Highway. Parent was treated by paramedics at the scene. He got home on his own that morning. However, Del’s brother Andre Parent, said he got a call from his brother’s co-worker on the Tuesday after he was assaulted because
Del hadn’t shown up for work for two days. “I went to his house and found him collapsed on the floor,” said Andre. He was taken to Ridge Meadows Hospital by ambulance and a CT scan revealed serious bleeding in his brain. He required immediate surgery at Royal Columbian Hospital to relieve the pressure. “He’s suffered severe mental and physical damage as a result of the injuries,” said Andre. “He will be handicapped for the rest of his life.” Andre said it’s unlikely his brother will work again and could lose his house. He added that the last fight his brother was involved in was in high school and said “he’s not a man who would harm anyone ever.” See ASSAULT, Page 5

Pitt Meadows adds inventory tool on site Businesses looking for space in Pitt Meadows or realtors looking to lease or sell land, buildings or commercial/retail space in Pitt Meadows have a new search tool courtesy of the City of Pitt Meadows. Potential investors can use a webbased marketing tool to see what lands and spaces are available in Pitt Meadows. “When potential investors request information, few cities are able to provide comprehensive and accurate information on the available land and commercial/industrial building stock available in the community. This is largely due to the fact that spaces can change quickly and real-estate websites list information by paid subscription,” said Kate Zanon, CEO of Pitt Meadows Economic Development. The website can be searched using price range and type of property. It will then list what is available and the selling or leasing price as well as other information posted by the agent. The database can be found on the city’s website (www.pittmeadows. bc.ca - search under Business>/Economic development>commercial property search). There’s no fee for the service and it is accessible 24/7. Pitt Meadows ‘ghetto’ fixed up

A
total transformation has breathed new life into the Harris Road Housing Co-op, say some of its residents. After two-and-a-half years of work and millions of dollars, the repairs and renovations to the Pitt Meadows co-op are now complete. And resident Jo-Ann Howell, who serves as project liaison for the coop’s building remediation committee, couldn’t be happier. “It’s been a very long but exciting process,” she said. The complex was deemed a leaky co-op around 2002, explained Howell, who added that it took years for the project to come to fruition. With a price tag of between $10 and $12 million, work on the complex included: • Changing all of the water pipes from copper to pex. • Replacing the existing wooden siding of the units with vinyl. This included, if necessary, going through to

Troy Landreville/TIMES the inside of units if rot was discovered. “In some units, there were workers inside the living rooms,” Howell said. “In my unit, I had no walls,” added Loretta Taylor, a remediation committee member. “The whole wall had to go.” • Replacing the doors,
windows, and roofs of each unit; • And building new fences in each backyard. Funds for the project were provided via a partly interest-free loan from the Homeowners Protection Office (HPO) as well as from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation
(CMHC). The residents will repay the loan through housing charges, which will increase each year until the co-op reaches market value. Howell said there was much concern and comment over the years regarding the appearance of the co-op, as well as concerns over the health and safety of the
residents. Now the co-op members have reason to celebrate. “This was deemed the ghetto of Pitt Meadows,” Taylor said. “My family came in when I first moved here and said ‘Oh my God. What is she living in.’ I couldn’t wait for my family to come back.”
Pitt councillors want details on Formosa motives

The majority of Pitt Meadows council supported a subdivision of Formosa Nursery but two councillors opposed it, citing support for agricultural land. Councillors John Becker and Bruce Bell voted against forwarding the application, which will allow the owner Ting Wu to either ask the Agricultural Land Commission to subdivide the lot or to ungazette a road along his property line which would allow the city to subdivide the property. The Golden Ears Way leading to the new bridge cut Formosa Nursery into
two pieces with about five acres to the south of the new road and 37 acres to the north where Wu and his family have a nursery and a blueberry farm. “I’m philosophically opposed to subdivision within the agricultural land reserve,” said Coun. John Becker at the 6 p.m. council in committee meeting. He added that he also couldn’t support it since there was no explanation from the applicant about what he planned to do with it. The second parcel is five acres in size, and Becker said that is “economically viable” for agriculture. “Mr. Wu has suffered

enough having the road go through his property,” said Coun. Deb Walters at the committee meeting. Later at the council meeting, Walters said she would not support forwarding the property to be pulled out of the agricultural land reserve. Coun. Doug Bing suggested council defer their decision after saying he didn’t know Wu’s motives to subdivide the property. “Mr. Wu has been put through hell over this road,” Bing said. The motion to defer failed, as did Bell’s motion to deny forwarding the application. When council voted to forward it, Bell and Becker voted against it.
Wu was at the regular council meeting at 7 p.m. during which the mayor asked him what he intended to do with the subdivided property. He indicated he planned to build a house on the fiveacre property. In order to get sewer service from Maple Ridge, the property has to be subdivided. Currently, the property is one lot and therefore can only have one home on it. At the committee meeting, Diana Williams with the Pitt Polder Society said she was worried about the subdivision of the property in the ALR. “ALR land has been known
to come out of the ALR,” Williams said. Coun. Gwen O’Connell responded to her that Pitt Meadows has a good record of protecting farmland. The decision made by council allows Wu to apply to the ALC to subdivide his property into two lots. However, at the southern property line of his property is a strip of land “gazetted” — dedicated — in 1895 as a road. Wu has the choice of seeking to ungazette the road, in which case it would be added onto his farmland, and the property would be subdivided into a separate lot by Pitt Meadows development staff.

Pitt Meadows council affirmed that marijuana grow-operations aren’t allowed anywhere in Pitt Meadows or as a farming operation. Because medical marijuana is permitted by Health Canada for people with serious illnesses, people who are authorized to possess it can get it from Health Canada, grow their own or
designate someone to grow it on their behalf. The City of Pitt Meadows consulted with their lawyers who recommended that, in order to clarify the prohibition, the city should define grow-operation and prohibit it as a home-based business. The city needed to define agriculture as excluding grow-operations as the
current definition was broad enough to possibly include medicinal marijuana. While growing marijuana for other people is licensed by the federal government, municipal zoning regulations still apply. The bylaw passed first and second reading and a public hearing for it will be held on July 20. — Maria Rantanen
Farm market pilot project set for an eight-week run
The Osprey Village Farmers’ Market will run for eight weeks this summer as a pilot project. The first market day is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 1 and will run for seven weeks after that ending on Sept. 19. The Haney Farmers’ Market Society is organizing the market, but market manager Eileen Dwillies said that it was the Osprey Village Business Association that got the ball rolling and the businesses from the area will take part in the farmers’ market. Dwillies hopes Pitt Meadows residents will come
out to support the market and buy from the venders. “If they believe in farmers’ markets, now it’s time to show their support,” Dwillies said. The venders won’t be motivated to come back if marketgoers don’t buy their products, Dwillies added. Twenty-six venders have signed up, many of whom sell their wares at the Haney Farmers’ Market, Dwillies said. There is room for 35 venders. There will be coffee, tea, smoothies for sale as well as samosas and bannock. There will be “market music” as entertainment
and a café table. People are also encouraged to cycle to the market where they can leave their bikes at the bike lockup. If this year’s eight-year pilot project is successful, the business association hopes the market can have an even longer run next year. The first Osprey Village Farmers’ Market will be held on Aug. 1 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. when there will also be an opening ceremony. Osprey Village is located by the Fraser River at the south end of Bonson Road. The market will run every Sunday thereafter until Sept. 19.

Some politicos trash incinerator Some civic politicians have come out against Metro Vancouver’s controversial proposal to build a trash incinerator to burn the region’s waste, just weeks before they’re set to vote on the plan. At least four municipalities, including Vancouver, say they don’t support building a $470-million trash incinerator as part of the region’s solid-waste management plan, noting Metro should focus instead on ways to reduce the amount of waste, boost recycling rates and explore other options to deal garbage. A staff report scheduled to go to Vancouver city council this week also suggests that there should be “further assessment of mass burn incineration,” including an independent review of the current findings and recommendations. “There’s much more information we need before we pass it,” Vancouver Coun. Raymond Louie said. “If we’re more successful in both reducing our waste and redirecting that waste to recycling and composting, then we won’t need that [incinerator]. We don’t want to build a white elephant.” The incinerator plan has been mired in controversy since it was first proposed by Metro Vancouver as an alternative to the Cache Creek landfill, which was slated to close this year but
has since been given approval for an expansion that could see it remain open for another 35 years. But Metro Vancouver argues it prefers dealing with its garbage closer to home. In its solid-waste management plan, it wants to raise recycling rates from 55 per cent of garbage today to 70 per cent by 2015, with the remaining 30 per cent burned instead of buried. Port Moody also voted against incineration, saying it isn’t an environmentally friendly option, while North Vancouver, which has been in support of incineration, is likely to turn tack, Mayor Darrell Mussatto said. Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart also suggested the public should be asked how they want to divert the remaining 30 per cent of garbage instead of being asked their views on incineration. “This isn’t against incineration, but we have nothing else to offer,” Stewart said. “What are we going to do with the residuals? If we don’t incinerate it, do we store it in the landfill in Cache Creek or put it in a bog in Delta?” The Metro Vancouver board is scheduled to vote on a final solid-waste management plan on July 30. But first it has to convince its other member municipalities - and the provincial government - they should buy into its plan.

Andre held up a photo collage that Kyle and Kayla made for their dad for Father’s Day. He was unable to respond and laying in a hospital bed when they showed him the collage.

He said such a program could have helped police in this investigation. “I would encourage whoever it was to come forward. This is a very serious file for us. Don’t close wards, urges child centre

he board of Ridge Meadows Child Development Centre decided at a recent board meeting to publicly lobby to maintain pediatric beds and the maternity ward at Ridge Meadows Hospital. Fraser Health commissioned an expert review of the pediatric and obstetrics departments throughout the health region and recommendations made by the consultants have sparked concern, including among local doctors, that Ridge Meadows Hospital could lose its obstetrics department and pediatric beds. Fraser Health officials told the public during a recent public meeting that no decisions have been made on the recommendations and the health region is consulting staff at individual hospitals and will come up with an action plan in August. Audrey Taylor, executive director of the centre, said she understands no decisions have been made but the board of the centre and staff want to publicly oppose any change in obstetrics or pediatrics. “We really want to add our voices to those other people who are concerned about these recommendations,” she said. The centre provides services for 705 children in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows who have development delays or disabilities. “We recognize that Fraser Health has to look at the report and probably make some difficult decisions but we think our community has grown and the pediatric beds are just incredibly important to families,” she said. She added there’s a concern if Ridge Meadows Hospital
lost its pediatric beds there’s a chance pediatricians in the community would leave. “Our board felt they really wanted to make a more public statement about our support for the hospital and the pediatric and maternity beds,” said Taylor. Toni Grozdanich’s son Brayden gets assistance from the centre and she is opposed to any change in obstetrics or pediatrics services at Ridge Meadows Hospital. “It’s not a very smart idea. Where are the mothers supposed to go to get help? They would have to drive so far to get help,” she said. “If there’s an emergency that’s just ridiculous. They could lose their children. What are they thinking? I can’t imagine having an emergency in the night and not being able to go right there (to Ridge Meadows Hospital).” Grozdanich said she wouldn’t have wanted to have to go to another hospital to give birth. “Every hospital should have a maternity ward and pediatricians that are there for emergencies if need be,” she said.

Yip, Ladd work hard, show class
If you are a hockey fan, there’s good reason to be beaming these days. No, not because of the Vancouver Canucks. Hopefully next spring we’ll be beaming. The reason to beam with pride is because of two Maple Ridge-bred hockey players who are finding great success with the NHL. Andrew Ladd is the obvious one to highlight. Ladd is bringing the Stanley Cup to Maple Ridge on Sunday, July 18, for a public event from noon to 2 p.m. at Planet Ice. This is the second time Ladd has brought the cup to town. He won in 2006 with the Carolina Hurricanes before being inexplicably traded to the Chicago Blackhawks. Ladd was drafted fourth overall, but his road to getting drafted that high wasn’t always so sure. Ladd became highly regarded through hard work in the minor leagues that got him noticed. Once he got in the league, he has proven to be a winner on and off the ice. Event organizers say Ladd has been a class act to deal with while organizing the cup visit. But a lesser-known talent has emerged in Brandon Yip. His road to the NHL should be an inspiration to all people who face long odds in life. Yip wasn’t drafted in the first round. Or the second. Try the eighth round, 239th overall, by the Colorado Avalanche. Most players drafted that late are mere afterthoughts in the annals of hockey. But not Yip. He put his head down and went to Boston University for four years, winning the 2009 NCAA Championships along the way. Then he went and played for the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League. When he finally got called up due to a rash of Avalanche injuries, Yip made the most of it, scoring 11 goals in just 20 games to lead all rookies in goals-per-game. Then he hurt his shoulder and missed nearly all of March. But he didn’t let that get him down either. When he returned he racked up four points in six playoff games, ranking second on the Avalanche. And then on Wednesday the team announced it had signed Yip to a two-year contract. The message here is, of course, work hard and don’t give up, no matter how daunting a task.

Take your medicine like a man
A
statistic stuck out for me the other day, not for the number attached to it, but the disclaimer. It was from the website prostatecancer.ca (yes, mom, I do read more than ESPN and Maxim online) and the number listed how many Canadian men will be diagnosed with the disease this year (25,500). But the disclaimer added “not including cases that go undiagnosed due to men’s unwillingness to go for annual checkups.” And when they say “unwillingness” Chris they are politely trying to say some Campbell (many...most...all?) men are chicken when it comes to going to the doctor. Out of That’s right, we’re cowards. How many times have you heard a man coughing, sneezing and groaning to the point that you think they are really a World Cup soccer player that had been tapped on the arm and went down like they were shot with a rifle? And then you asked that man, his face as grey as a rotting piece of veal, “Why don’t you go to the doctor?” Why, you might as well have asked him if he needs a map for directions or if he wants to read the instruction manual. We men like to be spitting up blood and on the verge of collapsing before we will even entertain the thought of going to the doctor (the dry, hacking cough I’ve had for two months will testify to that point). Now throw in the idea of going for a prostate exam and you’ll know why a prostate cancer website mentions so many undiagnosed cases of the disease due to the “unwillingness” of men. I’ve been thinking about this subject lately because Sunday is the one-year anniversary of the death of Dr. Hanna Binder. She was a popular Maple Ridge physician who helped me through a difficult time physically. She was also an outspoken advocate of men getting regular prostate exams. She spoke with me at length on the subject. Last year, while in her a vehicle on the freeway in Chilliwack, she was involved in a horrific crash. Her
daughter Maia and friend Dr. Maria Daskiewicz both wrote letters to the editor about the anniversary of the crash and highlighting the benches that have been named in her honour. That got me to thinking about the subject of preventative health and why so many people avoid simple exams that can save their lives. Look, I hate somebody poking around my, er, internal affairs as much as the next guy, but this is life or death. I don’t want to ever have to tell my daughter that daddy’s got cancer when I could have caught it early on by simply going to the doctor. Time How do you tell your child you were too chicken to let your doctor let his or her fingers do the walking? I’m not trying to preach here, but there is a more personal reason for all this ranting. Somebody close in my family was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year. This person discovered the cancer early on after going to his doctor for an exam. This person was in his 70s and had never had a prostate exam before. But his doctor insisted. After treatment and surgery, this person is now pretty darn healthy and facing more years of healthy living. All because he finally got checked out. The facts are simple, according to the experts. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian men — it will afflict one in six men and is a greater threat for those with a family history of the disease. It’s turning up in men in their 40s. It develops as a result of dietary, environmental and heredity factors (more research is needed to identify its causes and prevent the disease). New, preliminary research suggests pharmaceuticals may help prevent prostate cancer in men at high risk of the disease. Often without symptoms in its earliest, most curable stage — making annual testing ever more important. It’s time to stop being so uncomfortable about the subject. It’s time to bend over and take your medicine like a man.

❚ Mailbag More ‘brilliance’ from TransLink with toll hike Editor:
Re: Increase in bridge tolls slaps users, TIMES Opinion, July 6 Well, chalk up another brilliant decision by the morons at TransLink. Not enough traffic, make the people who do use it pay more. Why don’t you revise the way the tolls are collected in the first place? We use the bridge maybe a couple of times a year, so a transponder is not economical for us. Instead, TransLink sends a two-page invoice. Really? It likely costs TransLink more than the actual bill to generate it, send it and process the remit. Why don’t they set up a couple of old guys in a booth at the on-ramp or install receptacles and bar gates, so you’d just have to toss in your toonie or whatever, and be merrily on your way? That would be such a simple solution the tolls might even be lowered to make more people want to use the bridge. Oh, right, we’re talking about TransLink, where stupidity is the order of the day. E. Signs unclear Editor:
Can I be the only person in the Lower Mainland who deplores the clarity of our signage? Quite often the sign is offered when it’s too late to change lanes. There is one sign, no advance signs, or incomplete or unclear signs. Does this not often cause accidents? It is bad enough when the weather is clear, but when it is dark and rainy it can be disastrous. It has often occurred to me that if you already know where you are going there is no problem. Signs, however, are supposed to be intended for those who don’t know where they are going, hence the need for signs. Yes, there are now google maps, mapquests, and GPS devices, but not everyone has those. And even if you do have them, they are sometimes inaccurate or not up-to-date, or just as confusing. Canada has progressed significantly in labour regulations to address sexism, racism, harassment, job reprisals, intimidation, religious persecution, verbal abuse, discrimination, etc. There is still much work to be done, as people encounter continued job disgruntlement spawned by unfit managers/ superiors and redneck bullies at work. For those who lack a conscience, it is not a “cute context” if a manager is foul mouthed to an employee. It is disrespectful, belittling, unprofessional and contemptible and is verbal abuse that is subject to an official complaint by Employment Standards. If a young child called a neighbour’s parent a “f***” I am confident there would be justified and swift consequences, as even in a joke it is not acceptable at work. It is wrong for a teacher to call a parent “idiot” and that would have some form of discipline with their superior. However, it is sad that some would try to protect their own colleagues from disciplinary action because of a cohesive mentality thinking they are

he opportunity to unleash your inner daredevil comes July 15. That’s when WildPlay Maple Ridge celebrates its opening. The element park, located at the site of the old Maple Ridge Campground (13165-236 St.), runs daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. before closing on Sept. 6. The deal was reached earlier this year and it includes a partnership with Ridge Meadows Parks and Leisure Services that means $6,000 worth of free passes annually to benefit the community. WildPlay’s Monkido treeto-tree courses are elevated obstacle courses set in a Douglas Fir forest, and securely suspended between the trees at 10 to 60 feet off the ground. Some of the elements of the park include zip lines, suspended bridges, scramble nets, and swinging logs. Levels of the adult tree course are: • Green - minimum level, minimum skill; • Blue - medium elevation, medium skill; • Red - advanced elevation, medium skill; • and Black - advanced elevation, advanced skill. The children’s course is lower than the “big kids” full course, and is designed for youngsters too small to reach
the continuous safety lines. There are requirements to be met before you can start “monkeying around.” • Everyone must demonstrate the ability to use the equipment before access to any course.

Mix bag has ‘artifacts of memory’ Philip Mix describes his new exhibition at the Maple Ridge Art Gallery during the month of July as “the artifacts of memory.” The works, rendered in oil on linen, offer the viewer a series of dreamlike landscapes that engage the eye and the mind by shifting the viewer’s perception along a plane of staggered focal points. Initially reminiscent of classic vistas of Western Canada, a longer look is rewarded with a somewhat altered view, where the

streaming, refracted light speaks of the Mediterranean and other sunny climes. Speaking of his own work dating from 2005-2010, Mix comments, “As a body, these works describe a journey; individually, they define moments of quiet clarity. But perhaps they are best described by the Latin subtitle of the painting Sundail VII, Non Sine Lumine, ‘not without light’.” Mix spent many years living abroad, drawing inspiration from the rural
landscapes of the villages in which he resided: Capestang, France; Nayharia, Israel; and Killi, Cyprus among them. Although he acquired a degree in Fine Art from the Alberta College of Art, it took many years of travel and study before he felt inclined to follow his muse back to Canada. He now works full-time in his sequestered studio in Chemainus, where he describes himself as something of “an anomaly in this age of high-tech wireless wonder.”

Casting not black and white for Hairspray G
aribaldi theatre director Cyndy Lacroix decided her department would put on Hairspray this fall but the questions the play raises have her wondering how to cast the play. Hairspray, a play about racial tensions in the 1960s, deals not only with race issues, it also deals with size issues — its main character Tracy Turnblad is overweight and her weight is a big part of the play. Lacroix said casting for Hairspray has made her think long and hard about who can play what characters — can Caucasians play people of colour and can a slim girl play the part of the overweight Tracy Turnblad? The compromise Lacroix came up with casting for the main role was to double cast it: one actor is large and the other isn’t, she said, and they will act on alternating nights. But it is the race and skin colour issue she said she is really struggling with the most.
When casting — especially in high school productions — there is no questioning when an 18-year-old is cast as a 96-year-old, Lacroix said. But the question she’s grappling with as she casts for Hairspray is “can a Caucasian student respectfully represent the journey (of someone) of another skin colour?” Lacroix said putting on the musical would be a “deeper, richer experience” if she could bring in people of all ethnic backgrounds, and she would like to put out a call to the community looking for people of various backgrounds to take part in the play. As an administrator, Garibaldi vice-principal Grant Frend said Hairspray provides “on-ramps of discussion” around issues like race, abilities and other social issues. “I think the value of this play is the questions it will generate,” Frend said. “An educator’s job is to give
yourself permission to expose kids to as many issues as possible,” Lacroix added. A lot of Broadway plays are kept at a “comfortable emotional level,” Lacroix said, but Hairspray opens up dialogue about a lot of uncomfortable ideas. Hairspray follows on the school’s production last year of Rent, a play about artists in New York during the 1980s when AIDS was just coming to the surface in the United States. “Rent was an amazing springboard to talk about so many important issues,” Lacroix said. The school’s role is to prepare kids for the world, Frend added, and this is one avenue to do that — a more interesting avenue than just a textbook. “The theatre mirrors life,” Frend said, and that is especially important in a high school setting. Lacroix said in Canada the discussion has shifted from racism — “(which) comes from an emotion

They are boiled down until the sauce thickens, more cherry liqueur can be added at this point, and then served over ice cream or cake. One of my favourite childhood recipes is one that my mother made for our family every cherry season. She calls it cherry soup. It is whole cherries cooked in a sweet, red, cherry broth with curds made out of flour. Dear Chef Dez: I just recently bought a whole case of cherries because they were on sale for a great price. What are some ideas that I can do with them? Ron S. Abbotsford Dear Ron: There are many great ways to serve cherries. They add a great contrasting colour and flavour to green salads, and are also delicious in custards, sorbets, ice cream, fruit salads, and pies. Black Forest Cake is another famous dessert with cherries. You can also try making cherry wine or macerating them in vodka to make your own cherry liqueur. The Ridge Meadows Royals Black Peewee team came in third at the All Star Kick Off Tournament at Lionel Courchene Park in Surrey. They won their first three games: 7-5 against Surrey, 10-5 against Newton, and 10-3 against Burnaby. Their final game placed them in third position after they were beat by Richmond 4-3. The Peewee team was coached by Rupert Reed, Les Giles, and Brian Galloway in the spring and summer ball seasons.

ormer bantam A2 hockey player Matt Halajian is no longer playing on top of frozen water. Rather, he’s immersed himself into the warmer, chlorinated variety of H2O to pursue his athletic endeavors. The 15-year-old has stepped away from ice hockey to concentrate on water polo, a sport that likely gives him a serious case of skin wrinkling on the tips of his fingers (he’s normally in the pool training or playing seven times a week). The decision to throw his efforts into the often roughand-tumble aquatic sport will soon be taking him across Canada, and beyond. A Maple Ridge resident who coaches younger players with the Haney Neptunes, Halajian has earned a spot on the U16 boys national water polo team, which will represent Canada at an international tournament in Belgrade, Serbia next month. Comprising of the top 20 players in Canada, the national team will spend the first two weeks of August at the University of Toronto for centralized training, followed by a week’s training with the Serbian U16 national team in Belgrade prior to the tournament in late August. Halajian is a quick study in water polo. When he started playing in a league a year-and-a-half ago, he had modest expectations. “When I started, my goal was to make the starting lineup [of my club team],” the lanky, 6’5” Halajian said Halajian plays four/five side, which he compares to right wing in ice hockey. “I like shooting,” he said. “I try to be a goal scorer.” He said he loves the wideopen style of water polo.

Matt Halajian is heading to Toronto, then Serbia, as a member of the U16 boys national water polo team. “There’s not a lot of rules,” he said. “There’s a lot more freedom. Whatever the ref doesn’t see, that’s fine. I get competitive sometimes but I also try to know where the line is, and not cross it.” Halajian is one of three Maple Ridge residents competing as members of Canadian national water polo teams this summer. All three started with the Haney Neptunes summer program before moving on to the Fraser Valley Water Polo Club (FVWPC). ••• Seventeen-year-old Victoria Smith is a member of the U18 women’s squad.
After a mini centralization camp in Montreal this month, Smith and her teammates travel to Emmen, Netherlands to compete in the Butterfly Trophy Tournament, and then to Dunaœjvros, Hungary to take part in the Olympic Hopes Tournament before returning home. ••• Nathan Kotylak has earned a spot on the U18 men’s team. No stranger to intense competition, Kotylak was a key member of the 2010 Fraser Valley team that won gold at April’s Canadian national club championships, in which he

The U18 squad then heads to California for joint training with the U.S. national team. Yip signs for two years
Maple Ridge’s Brandon Yip was been signed to a two-year one-way contract with the Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club which will take him through the 2011-12 season. The team made the announcement on Wednesday. Yip was a restricted free-agent. Yip, 25, was recalled by the Avalanche on Dec. 18 of last year and went on to tally 11 goals and 19 points (11g/8a) in 32 games during his rookie campaign. He finished first among all NHL rookies in goals-per-game at 0.34. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound right wing also appeared in all six playoff games for Colorado, recording two goals and two assists to rank second on the team in postseason scoring with four points. “We’re pleased to have Brandon under contract,” said Avalanche General Manager/ Executive Vice President Greg Sherman. “With his energy and style of play, we think he can be a solid player for our team.” Yip missed the first two months of the 2009-10 season due to a hand injury he suffered during a preseason game on Sept. 18. He made his professional debut with the Lake Erie Monsters (AHL) on Dec. 1 and his NHL debut on Dec. 19. After going pointless in his first two contests with Colorado, Yip tallied 11 goals and 18 points in his next 20 games. He later missed 14 games from March 3-31 due to a shoulder injury. Selected by the Avalanche in the eighth round (239th overall) of the 2004 Entry Draft, Yip played four seasons at Boston University (Hockey East), where he helped lead the Terriers to the 2009 NCAA Championship ■

BRISTOW James (Jim) 1926-2010
With his family by his side, Jim passed away peacefully on July 2nd, after a courageous and heroic battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Joan; sister Connie; children: Dave (Sandy), Nancy (Rick), Dale (Bruce), Dawn (Donald), Glen (Debby); Grandchildren: Kevin, Ryan (Christine), Nicole, Jason, Trevor (Sarah), Bryan, Jeff, Taylor, Bailey: greatgrandchildren: Charlie, Samuel. WE WILL MISS YOU! A friend to all, Jim will be forever missed and never forgotten. His positive outlook and enthusiasm for life was an example to us all. December 12, 1921 ~ June 28, 2010
Ronald Stewart Alexander passed on June 28, 2010 surrounded by his children, Ronalynn and Brian, in Fort Langley, British Columbia. Ron was born on December 12, 1921 in Vancouver and was a brother to Garfield.
With wife, Doreen, and their children in tow, Ron moved to Kelowna to begin his teaching career at Kelowna Secondary School in 1960. While in Kelowna and to improve his education skills he moved back to Vancouver to attend U.B.C. where he completed his Bachelor of Education. In addition to his love of education, Ron also had a love for his community. Ron was President of the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce and he had the honor of welcoming Queen Elizabeth during his tenure. In 1975, Ron’s dream of becoming a pilot came true. Two of Ron’s many great achievements were his instrumental role in creating and instructing the first aviation program where a group of select high school students built a bi-plane (which is still in operation today) and the introduction of the Junior Achievement program in Kelowna school district. Through a variety of roles, from Vice-principal of Kelowna Vocational School to Inspector of Education for all technical classes in British Columbia, Ron retired as Supervisor of Education Services for Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows school district. During his retired years, Ron enjoyed fine woodwork and rebuilding cars, spending time with his second wife, Marci, writing stories and hosting guests at their Bed and Breakfast in Maple Ridge. Ron was a wonderful Grandfather to his three grandchildren: Kimberlee, Sarah and Michael. Until very recently, Ron still regularly flew to Chilliwack for pie and coffee with one of his greatest confidants and friend.

Ron graduated from Vancouver Tech School in 1939. A year later, he enrolled in the aero-engine mechanic program at British Commonwealth Air Training School and upon completion of the program, was sworn into the Royal Canadian Air Force. In 1945, Ron was given an honorable discharge from R.C.A.F. and started a career at Brown Bros Ford in Vancouver. A few years later he chose to move to Nanaimo working as service manager at a Ford dealer. While in Nanaimo Ron became interested in vocational teaching, that set his career path until his retirement.
