arnell Pratt, who killed 24year-old Grant De Patie in a brutal gas-and-dash incident in Maple Ridge in 2005, is out of jail on statutory release. The only special condition the national parole board imposed on Pratt is that he’s not allowed to have direct or indirect contact with De Patie’s family members. Pratt will also be under standard statutory release conditions. By law most federal prisoners are automatically released after serving 2/3 of their sentence if they have not already been released on parole. During their statutory release peri-

od offenders are monitored by the Correctional Service of Canada. “My hopes are that he will be successful,” said Grant De Patie’s dad Doug. “Grant gave his life preventing Darnell from committing that crime...In light of that I hope the best for him. I hope he does well for himself and becomes a member of our community. I don’t want a failure for him.” Doug said Pratt was a “young kid” when he committed the crime and he works on feeling forgiveness towards him every day. “We all have to move on. Grant’s dead. Nothing I say or do will bring Grant back so it’s really all about Darnell now,” said Doug. However, Doug said if Pratt vio-

lates the conditions of his parole he’ll “have something to say” about it. “I think perhaps he’s going to get some of the help he now needs dealing with his drug and alcohol abuse and those sorts of things. I don’t think he necessarily was getting as much as he could inside. I think this is more of the setting for him to get proper counselling,” said De Patie. Pratt, who was 16 at the time of the crime, received a nine-year sentence for dragging De Patie for seven kilometres under a stolen car in an attempted gas-and-dash. However, in April 2007 the B.C. Court of Appeal reduced his manslaughter sentence to seven years.

He also was given credit for time served prior to sentencing so his sentence amounted to five years and 10 months. During his sentencing the court heard that Pratt, an Aboriginal, was raised by a single mother addicted to meth and he had been in and out of government care since he was 12. He had a Grade 8 education and admitted to being drunk daily after he turned 16. The B.C. Court of Appeal found that his youth and aboriginal background should have been given more consideration in the original sentence and the court emphasized Pratt’s rehabilitation as a factor in sentencing. — With files from Canwest News

Sharpe’s Agency, a Pitt Meadows icon seen by thousands of cars that zip through the community on their daily commutes, will have a less visible location as the highway expands to accommodate the rapid bus lane being added to the highway. Pitt Meadows Mayor and owner of Sharpe’s Agency Don MacLean came to an agreement with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure this week on selling his property to allow for the highway expansion. “They weren’t generous, they were fair,” MacLean said. “Which is probably how they have to use public money.” MacLean has until June 24 to sign the papers for the one-third of an acre he owns and while the ministry wants the business out by Sept. 1, he thinks that’s pushing it and hopes to change the date to Oct. 1. He feels that is a more reasonable timeframe to find a new location in the downtown area of Pitt Meadows. The province’s 2031 transportation plan includes a graded intersection for the Harris and

MacLean’s property, the new rapid bus lane would have gone within inches of his front door, which would have probably put him out of business, he said. The view at Harris and Lougheed h a s c h a n g e d s i n c e Ma c L e a n arrived 25 years ago — Hale Lumber was still operating for a few years where Meadow Vale Mall now exists, and then the lot sat empty for a few years with coyotes and other wildlife wandering around before the mall was built. The building was originally the Sharpe family’s farmhouse. Danny Sharpe, a former mayor of Pitt Meadows, owned the insurance company Sharpe’s Agency when MacLean went to work there 25 years ago. But the other half of the building housed the Pitt Meadows’ branch of the CIBC and in the 1970s, it was the target of a bank robbery and shooting. Over the years, the building also housed a lawyer, an accountant, a taxi dispatch service and Meadowridge Realty before Sharpe’s Agency took over the entire building. MacLean said his feelings about moving are “mixed” — the museum has requested some piece of memorabilia from Sharpe’s Agency.

District gets poor ranking for high taxes on business

he Canadian Federation of Independent Business has ranked all B.C. municipalities on how high taxes are for small business compared to residential and Maple Ridge ranks in the top 30 “worst offenders” by population and 47th worst overall when population isn’t factored in. According to the CFIB the average business in Maple Ridge pays 3.4 times more on its taxes than the average residential taxpayer. “Small businesses are unreasonably burdened with paying almost three times the property taxes of residents, on average,” said Brian Bonney, director of provincial affairs for the CFIB in a media release. Other Metro Vancouver municipalities fared worse than Maple Ridge in the survey with, for example, the average Coquitlam business pending 4.98 times more than a residential payer and the average Vancouver business paying 4.85 times more than the average residential payer. The CFIB is calling on municipalities to freeze business taxes until businesses are only charged twice as much as residential taxpayers or for the province to legislate a cap on municipal business property taxes. Dean Barbour, executive director of the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Chamber

of Commerce, said the gap in tax rates between residential and business points to the need for a business vote in municipal elections because “business people don’t have a say yet they’re paying three times, sometimes four times more than anybody else.” “We want to see the taxation with representation so that’s why we believe in having this business vote,” said Barbour. Barbour said the chamber would also like to see more effort being put into attracting new businesses and industry to the community to help alleviate the tax burden. “The business base we do have pays dearly. What I want to see is see our local governments continue to work hard at diversifying our economy by drawing and attracting more business, by putting in incentives to bring bigger business with higher paying jobs with more opportunity in the future to continue to grow the local economy,” said Barbour. Barbour said the Pelton family’s plan to develop a light industrial park on land it’s applying to have taken out of the agricultural land reserve would be an example of positive economic development. “This is one of the arguments that kind of falls back to the Pelton proposal,” said Barbour. “ There comes a point where certain ventures need to be considered for the

Is it discriminatory to make drivers get a medical exam when they reach 80 years of age? One expert on aging and mental health suggests it may be, and says many attitudes and policies around senior drivers are ageist. However, others say the problem of older drivers who insist on getting behind the wheel despite deteriorating mental abilities is a major and growing safety concern that could soon turn into a crisis. In British Columbia and Ontario, drivers who are 80 years old must submit to a medical exam to continue driving. Such legislation, along with newspaper reports that overemphasize collisions involving older drivers, and stereotypes that suggest all seniors are potential threats behind the wheel, contribute to an overall negative public sense of senior drivers, said Holly Tuokko, director of the University of Victoria’s Centre on Aging. “I think our laws are ageist, definitely,” she said, referring to B.C. Tuokko, a psychology professor, specializes in mental health and aging and the functional capabilities of seniors with respect to driving. Although there’s a correlation between aging and the onset of an increasing number of medical conditions, Tuokko said she questions the government’s decision to require all drivers to take a medical exam at age 80. “There’s some good reasons why we have an age criteria, but there are some countries that don’t and they don’t see a higher crash involvement, and their stats don’t rise,” Tuokko said. If medical conditions rather than age are the issue, it might make more sense to start testing at age 40, she said, when age-related medical conditions begin. — Canwest News

Paul Gill, general manager of corporate and financial services with the District of Maple Ridge, questions the ratio that CFIB came up with. He said according to his calculations in 2010 the ratio is 3 to 1 for business versus residential and in 2009 it was 3.3 to 1.

“To focus on a ratio analysis alone to reach conclusions isn’t telling the full picture,” he said, adding Maple Ridge ranks “quite favourably” when compared to other nearby municipalities when it comes to taxation rates. “Our council takes the burden of taxation very seriously. When we look at our overall budgets we look at how much is required to provide the services citizens want. We spend a lot of time making those decisions. We also have a very close look at how the tax burden looks compared to the communities around us,” said Gill. Gill said the district recently reduced taxes for light industrial and is reviewing taxes for heavy industrial. “Where adjustments were required we’ve made those adjustments,’ he said. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said “homeowners say the same thing” about taxes being too high, but services have to be funded. “I do realize and respect the fact that there is that differential (between business and residential taxes),” he said. “I’m not going to diminish the burden that’s on the small business guy.” How e v e r, h e s a i d h e doesn’t feel spending in Maple Ridge is “out of control. We’re trying to deliver services to the community,” he said. CFIB represents 10,000 small and medium-sized businesses in B.C.

Swift named parks head K

elly Swift will be replacing Mike Murray as the general manager of community development and parks and recreation. Murray is retiring after a lengthy career working for the district and Swift will take over the role as of June 28. Swift has worked for the district since 1990, starting out in customer service, then becoming a recreation coordinator, recreation manager and recreation director. She has a diploma in therapeutic recreation, a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal and Business Studies and a Masters of Business Administration. “I am absolutely delighted that Kelly has been appointed to lead the parks and recreation division,” said Mayor Ernie Daykin in a media release. “She is a marvelous example of how an employee can take advantage of the educational and career opportunities available at the district. Kelly has provided terrific service to the citizens of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows throughout her career and now she will have an opportunity to have even greater impact in her role as leader of the division.” Swift told The TIMES the district has been a “tremendous place to work” and she’s excited about the new opportunity.

“I feel I’ve been given a lot of opportunity to learn and grow over the years and I’m really looking forward to more of the same,” she said. Taking over for Murray won’t be easy, she added. “I can tell you one of the most common phrases I’ve heard from people is they’re big shoes to fill and that’s true. Mike has not only been with our department for over 30 years he’s been the leader in the department for 30 years. He just has a tremendous amount of experience that he’s gathered over all of those 30 years that I’m going to miss,” she said. The department is currently reviewing a draft parks master plan that was put together after extensive community consultation. An implementation plan will be put together in the fall, which council will vote on. “The implementation plan is about looking ahead, looking out 10 to 20 years,” said Swift. Swift said one of the issues that needs to be addressed is that “some of our facilities are getting very close to being at capacity.” “I do think it’s important we’re planning right now... recognizing our situation in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. We’re still going to see significant growth over the next five to ten years,” she

said. The master parks plan recommends adding another 69 hectares of parkland by 2020 in order to meet a proposed new target of four hectares of parkland per 1,000 population. “In the park area a lot of the park work is funded through development cost charges so we have a longterm capital plan in place. I really think the master plan is reinforcing that we continue working in that direction,” said Swift. Swift believes Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadow’s parkland “is a strength.” “I’ve lived here for 20 years and I have my favourites spots and I’m a real advocate for our trail network,” she said. Swift is currently in the process of visiting every park location in the two communities. “I think we have an extensive and beautiful park network,” she said. “It’s a priority to continue on the path that we have been on.” One challenge is the popularity of Maple Ridge Park. Swift said the district wants to “add amenities” in other parks “rather than everyone congregating in one main park.”

rom her deck in Langley, the new executive director of Tourism Maple RidgePitt Meadows can watch skydivers jumping from airplanes at the Pitt Meadows Airport. As the new head of tourism for the two communities, Kristina Gervais sees a lot of tourism potential from the Pitt Meadows Airport in addition to the wide variety of outdoor opportunities that Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have to offer. “We don’t want residents to take their out-of-town visitors to Stanley Park first,” Gervais said. On June 1, Duckworth Management Group started its work as the new tourism operator for Tourism Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows. Duckworth has contracted Gervais as the new executive director and she began her job on June 2. This summer the focus will be to continue promoting tourism through the visitors’ centre at Harris and Lougheed, but this fall, she plans to start looking ahead on how to start developing it into a “full-fledged destination marketing cen-

tre.” In addition to the natural attractions like Golden Ears Park, the trail system, Whonnock and Pitt Lakes, Gervais said her job will also include attracting visitors to the new Wild Play attraction and Raptor’s Ridge as well as seasonal attractions like Meadows Maze. “Food is the new wine,” Gervais said and she would like to support more culinary tourism, for example, promoting companies like Hopcott Meats, a local family-owned business. The Circle Farm Tour, a self-guided tour of local producers, is an example of culinary tourism, and Gervais wants it to get more attention in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Gervais pointed out that the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows visitors’ centre is a resource for local residents - not just for visitors who are looking for something to do or trying to find their way around. She also wants to get local residents involved in volunteering with the visitors’ centre. The visitors’ centre was run by the non-profit society Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows

Tourism, but their contract was not renewed at the end of 2009. The society then disbanded and therefore didn’t bid on the new contract. Kate Zanon, Pitt Meadows Economic Development CEO, who oversees the tourism contract, said Pitt Meadows council was looking for a contractor “who was more in line with the goals of council,” adding they would have considered a bid from the now defunct society if it had been in line with what they were looking for. Duckworth Management Group has operated the Metro Vancouver’s Brae Island Regional Park-Fort Camping in Fort Langley for the past seven years. Gervais has worked for more than 20 years in the hospitality industry and not-for-profit operations. She worked as the tourism and visitor services coordinator for Tourism Langley, a destination marketing organization, and managed two visitor centres in Langley, tourism training, nonprofit coordination with Fort Langley BIA, hotel management, travel agent training, marketing, event planning and volunteer coordinator to name a few.

NOTICE OF LOWER WATER LEVELS: HAYWARD LAKE RESERVOIR Ruskin Dam Crossing Closed June 7-25 Starting June 4, 2010, the water level in the Hayward Lake reservoir will be lowered to accommodate maintenance work on the Ruskin Dam spillway gates. Lowering of the reservoir will begin on Friday, June 4 to reach the elevation of 34.5 metres in four days. Lower than average water levels will expose steep shorelines and slippery slopes along Hayward Beach and the entire reservoir shore. The beach can be used with caution but the water will not be accessible. The Hayward Lake boat launch will be closed. The picnic grounds will remain open and available for public use. Trails will remain open; however hikers will be unable to complete the Railway/ Reservoir Trail loop due to the closure of both the Ruskin Dam and the Floating Bridge at Hairsine Creek. An environmental management plan has been developed to protect ﬁsh and wildlife during the lower water levels. The water will begin rising again on Friday, June 25. Normal operating levels will return well before Canada Day, July 1. Hayward Street across Ruskin Dam will be closed to all pedestrian and vehicle trafﬁc June 7 – 25 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays only. Arts Council doles out funds despite cuts T

h e Ma p l e R i d g e P i t t Meadows Arts Council announced Tuesday the recipients of the 2010 grant and scholarship programs, this despite cutbacks that have hurt arts organizations. The announcement was also made with the Maple Ridge Jazz and Blues Festival missing from the list due to the fact it’s not likely to take place this summer. Upon announcing this year’s grants and scholarship recipients, Lindy Sisson, executive director, said that “though our own B.C. Arts Council support was cut by 46 per cent and our gaming funding has been cut by 55 per cent, it was very important to the board of directors to continue this tradition. It is vital for the health of the community in this region that the Arts Council continue to support our grassroots community arts organizations to the best of our ability as they too are feeling the

crunch of decreasing funding.” In support of their activities over the 2010/11 season, 11 arts organizations will receive funding, including: Garibaldi Arts Club, Clear Focus Camera Club, Maple Ridge Choral Society, Maple Ridge Historical Society, Emerald Pig Theatrical Society, BC Girls Choir Society, Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Art Studio Tour, Millennium Players, United Circle of Arts, SPECC-tacular Productions and the Caribbean Festival. In support of School District 42 students pursuing further arts education, the Arts Council provided four scholarships of $1,000 each to the following students: Aimee Marie Oliverio (Maple Ridge Secondary) for Music, Cecilly Rose Day (Maple Ridge Secondary) for Musical Theatre, Colleen Dixon (Maple Ridge Secondary) for Visual Arts and Jamie-Leigh Gonzales (Garibaldi Second-

Board president Roger Welch noted that reviewing the scholarship applications and auditions has become an annual highlight for the Scholarship Committee, saying “the organization is very pleased to be able to help young artists to further develop and share their significant talent and skills and we hope that our contribution increases their ability to reach their goals.”

Separation and Divorce; Resolving High Conflict through Mediation & Parenting Coordination. Do you and your ex frequently engage in unproductive arguments about the care of the children? Do you need information and assistance in developing/revising a parenting plan? Do you worry about the care of the children when they aren’t in your care? Do you worry that the other parent is trying to damage your relationship with your children? These questions address concerns that are common in high conflict separations where parents have little trust in each other. Parents typically hold negative perceptions and beliefs about the other parent creating stress for the children and disrupting any cooperative decision making. Parents often end up going to Court to settle trivial matters because their level of conflict impairs communication. Some parents, particularly where the break up was traumatic find themselves in constant conflict about their children and parenting issues long after the date of separation. Parenting Coordination is new to British Columbia however it has been used in other jurisdictions. Parenting Coordination involves the appointment of a professionally trained Parenting Coordinator(PC) who can assist parents to resolve disputes through mediation and if an agreement can not be reached, then the PC can arbitrate the issue and make a decision in the best interests of the children. The PC is a neutral person who is appointed by consent of the parents and the Court giving the PC the authority to make legally binding decisions if mediation fails. The PC assists with day to day issues such as changes in the access schedule, transportation, clothing and equipment transfers, pick up and drop off times, sharing of vacation and Statutory Holidays, communication protocols and many other issues. The PC helps to reduce conflict thus reducing the need for Court involvement and Court applications. The PC typically works with a family for a minimum of 6 months although a 1 to 2 year appointment is most common. The PC service is paid for by the parents with each parent responsible for half of the fees. A retainer is paid and a contract signed by both parents prior to the PC beginning to work with the family. Parents are encouraged to consult with their lawyer about the appropriateness of using a PC in their case. In British Columbia, Parenting Coordinators are governed by the BC Parenting Coordinators Roster Society. Tanning shop gets robbed

Police are investigating a robbery from a suntanning salon in the Westgate shopping mall in Maple Ridge. The incident occurred at 10:15 a.m. on June 16 when one white male walked up to the front counter and demanded money from the till. He was given an undisclosed amount of money and met up with another white male outside. The main suspect is described 5’8, 150 pounds with short brown hair. He was wearing a red and white striped baseball hat, a black long sleeved T-shirt, which had a logo on it, green camo pants, and sunglasses. His accomplice is 6’0, weighing approximately 190 pounds and also had short brown hair. He was wearing a blue baseball hat with writing on it, a black fleece jacket and blue jeans. I rewrap the shrapnel in the tissue it has nestled in since I became the one to look after it. I had no thought then that all these years later, apart from a few old photographs and dad’s signature on a marriage certificate, it would be the only token I have that connects me to him. Fathers don’t last forever. If you have something that reminds you of yours, keep it safe.

It’s time to clear something up. It’s time to educate both certain local politicians and Fraser Health. The concern about the possible closure or watering down of certain services at Ridge Meadows Hospital — including pediatrics and obstetrics — is not some media-created act of fiction. It’s based on local history and a clear knowledge of how health authorities like to work. Rowena Rizzotti, executive director for women’s health at Fraser Health, came to Maple Ridge Council on Monday to discuss the health region’s review of pediatric and obstetric services. Some of the recommendations in the “expert review” have health professionals in our community concerned. But Rizzotti decided to play the blame game, saying no decisions have been made and wondering why people are speaking out so early in the process. “It’s kind of unfortunate that some people will look at those recommendations and make assumptions that we’re adopting them as they’re written and that’s really not the case at all. We’re a long ways away from developing any actions and implementations,” said Rizzotti. Then Councillor Judy Dueck decided to join in the chorus. “Unfortunately, from time to time things get out into the media and the assumptions are made without all of the facts,” she said. OK, we got it. No decisions made yet, check. Except nobody has said a decision has been made yet, but there is a good reason for people to get worried based on some of the recommendations. That’s because in 1998 the government tried to get rid of pediatrics. Announced it and everything. Then the community rose up and staged mass rallies and lobbied the government until it reversed its decision. And considering the dire state of our provincial and health authority finances, when we see recommendations like this it makes sense for people to speak up now. You’d think a community-minded individual like Dueck would get that, but she decided to take a cheap potshot at the media. Sorry Judy, we’ll keep speaking up to protect local services. Coun. Craig Speirs spoke up Monday, giving an impassioned defence of protecting local pediatric services. He should know, his child needed those same services. It’s a pity the rest of council didn’t speak up and send a clear message because if no decisions have been made yet, we’re sure a strong statement from local politicians — other than Speirs — would have helped.

Local pediatric unit helped my son

I am a parent of a fouryear-old son who was transferred into the Ridge Meadows Hospital pediatric unit after a post-operative, open heart surgery infection at BC Children’s Hospital landed him in hospital. Only two weeks after having a gortex pipe replace an underdeveloped right ventricle in my son’s heart, doctors identified a rapidly spreading infection developing in my son’s chest, getting ever closer to his chest bone. It was difficult to identify the exact type of infection, so my son would need to be hospitalized. After starting out the treatment, which required two different fairly aggressive antibiotics to be administered through an IV three times each day, my son was transferred from BC Children’s Hospital to Ridge Meadows Hospital, under the supervision of Dr. John Archer to complete the remaining four weeks of treatment with the support of a wonderful nursing staff. Being closer to home and having access to his younger sister and the opportunity to

Indeed, carrot flies despise coffee so much that it will deter them from approaching even their favourite egglaying places. Or so I was told. And it

seems to work. No guarantees here, you understand, but it has seemed to work for me when I’ve tried it. Before your baby carrot plants are big enough to house those miserable fly babies, sprinkle a light layer of old coffee ground over the row. Keep spr inkling some fresh (old) grounds on the row every week or so until the carrots are ready to harvest. No pesticides, and no pests — it’s win-win. And the carrots seem to like the coffee and put more effort into growing big and strong and delicious — for which I reward them by throwing them, live, into a pot of boiling water at the end of the season!

have a confession to make: I’ve been stealing coffee grounds from the office. Worse still, I got caught. Okay, it wasn’t as heinous a crime as you might be thinking. I wasn’t stealing “ground coffee” so I could take it home to make illicit brew. I was swiping “coffee grounds” — the crud left in the filter after the perker is done perking. I wasn’t committing any crime by saving perfectly good organic matter from the office kitchenette garbage can. On the contrary, I was saving the grounds from a boring and vapid future in a landfill, giving them instead a useful and important environmental role within the scenic setting of my back yard. Now, although I was doing nothing wrong, you understand, I also wasn’t really keen on getting caught spiriting them away, and becoming known among the office whispers as “the weird guy in the corner office who collects used coffee grounds.” But my real reason for secrecy was that I didn’t want to have to explain myself and my actions. I didn’t want everyone to discover my secret, as I feared that would open the door to others to start hoarding coffee grounds for themselves, thus limiting the available supply for me to tap into. How right he is in how our society has become “consumed with consuming.” People today are judged and valued by what they have, cars, fancy house, etc. This is in my opinion wrong and a sad testament of what our society has evolved to. It is the result of years of programming and brain-

washing by the corporations of this world, who have convinced us that the material world is the only world; and unless we have Wal-Mart’s on every corner we surely cannot be happy or satisfied in life. Even the mayor in the last municipal election said that the burning issue with the voters was more malls and shopping. Well, I believe the real burning issue in the last municipal election was the fact that 70 per cent of the eligible voters did not even bother to vote. What a disgrace. But I guess they were too busy out shopping and couldn’t find the time to vote. Life has many great things to offer us and I believe that pursuing knowledge and wisdom is a better alternative to material things. The greatest people on this earth, like Gandhi for one, were not “consumed with consuming,” but had higher aspirations of creating a better world for all. There were days where we said, ‘Boy, what are we doing out here?’ But we’re shooting for the end goal,” said Ackerman. “The little milestones, like hitting 75 kilometres on a training ride — for me, that was quite exciting. Then you get to 100 kilometres and you think, ‘This is actually doable.’” The trio is devoting their efforts in memory of Finn Sullivan, a three-year-old who died of a rare form of cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma in 2008. Team Finn was established last year and featured about 30 riders who made the trek to Washington, raising $172,000 for cancer research in the process. Those numbers have jumped exponentially over the course of last year, as the 2010 edition of Team Finn boasts 140 riders and crew members. Donation totals have already exceeded $477,000 ahead of the two-day ride set for Saturday and Sunday. “At first it was because of my good friend’s diagnosis, but as I got involved with Team Finn, I realized that

Those seven words will be adorned across the chests of more than 140 participants out of the 2,700 riders set to take part in this weekend’s Ride to Conquer Cancer. Consisting of Canadians and Americans, members of Team Finn will make the twoday, 280-kilometre trek from Surrey to Redmond, Wash. this weekend as part of the annual B.C. Cancer Agency fundraiser. The team includes Kim Boekhorst, Darryl Ackerman and Maple Ridge native Darcy Balla. Their training started in earnest in February, with each of the three riders committing themselves to their bikes regardless of rain, fatigue or whatever else life could throw at them. “Anyone who can go through chemotherapy, my hat’s off to them,” Balla said. “Getting on a bike for a few hundred kilometres is nothing in comparison, but it’s the least I can do to support these people.” The three banded their efforts together in support of Darryl’s wife, Catherine, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2009. “When it was revealed that Catherine was diagnosed in September it really hit a lot closer to home than what you normally read in the paper or hear on the newscasts,” said Boekhorst. “The stats that are thrown out there — two out of every five Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer — but that just didn’t become real until it hits you personally.” Along the way, there were the inevitable mornings and days where the body said no, but the mind said yes. Prosthetist opens locally MARIA RANTANEN mrantanen@mrtimes.com eople who make artificial limbs are few and far between not just in the developing world but in the Lower Mainland as well. A prosthetist who has recently opened the first two prosthetic offices north of the Fraser has experienced both advanced, cutting edge technology in B.C. and its less sophisticated equivalent in Haiti and Pakistan. Last year, Scott Pearen travelled to Muzaffarabad, Pakistan for an intense six months making prosthetics with the Red Cross. Muzaffarabad is in Kashmir, an area that is normally limited to foreigners. A group of four prosthetists were making up to 100 artificial limbs per month, whereas a prosthetist in Canada normally makes three to four per month. “It was insane,” Pearen said. “It was so streamlined and efficient.” No t o n l y w a s t h e p a c e intense, the cases he saw and treated were extremely rough, for example, amputations where people’s limbs had been chopped off with a knife. “I learned an immense amount about general health,” Pearen said of his experience in Pakistan. Four years ago, Pearen went with a Canadian group of health care professionals — a group called Healing Hands for Haiti — to make prosthetics. In Haiti, before the devastat-

think their bionic leg is cool and show it off, Pearen said. “I just want to cover it up and hide it,” Milliken said. “Young males love the technology look,” Pearen said. “If I had it, I’d be showing it off.” About 10 per cent of prostheses are needed after someone loses a limb in a trauma, and five per cent of cases are the result of cancer. A prosthetist is needed for about every 100,000 residents, Pearen said, but before he opened his offices in Port Coquitlam and Maple Ridge, there hasn’t been a prosthetist north of the Fraser River closer than Abbotsford. Pearen estimated that there are no more than 20 prosthetists in British Columbia and he doesn’t think there are enough prosthetist being trained in Canada. The two-year national program Pearen attended at BCIT produced 11 graduates every two years, but of Pearen’s class only three became prosthetists while the others went into orthotics. ing earthquake in January, the majority of prostheses were needed for people who had been in major car accidents. When Pearen was 16 years old, his father lost his foot in a grain auger in Saskatchewan and that’s when he knew he wanted to have a career making artificial limbs. Making a prosthetic is 70 per cent science and 30 per cent art, Pearen said. The three important elements of prostheses are comfort, function and cosmetics. While in Pakistan a large majority of the prostheses are needed for earthquake victims and in Haiti they were largely needed for car crash victims, here in Canada, the vast majority — about 85 per cent — are for people who have lost limbs due to complications from diabetes. As people live longer, they will be more likely to develop diabetes and also more complications from poor circuluation, like losing limbs, Pearen said. Bob Milliken was 32 when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and four years ago in his 50s he lost his left leg due to a bad infection in his foot. It took three months for his stump to heal before he could get fitted for a prosthesis. Young women tend to react the worst to having a prosthesis, Pearen said. But there’s also a generational divide between young men and older men in regards to their prosthesis — Milliken would rather cover his up with foam padding and long pants whereas younger men often

Heather Taylor and Hilary McCarten paint rocks to go in a special garden. Students, teachers and supporters gathered Wednesday in the Westview Secondary School’s courtyard for a special ceremony and barbeque to celebrate work accomplished and to come in their “Green the Courtyard” garden project. Students from various classes including English 9, Communication 11 + 12, Leadership, and Support Connections collaborated on the project. Previously the courtyard was un-used space, but with financial support and hard work students have cleared garden beds to grow edible fruit producing plants. Future plans include construction of a tool shed with help from the Carpentry 11 class, and centre gazebo-like structure to grow vines on.

Nashville won against Ottawa Thursday at Albion Elementary School to win the 20th Annual Stanley Cup Finals. The winning team was captained by Stephanie Richards and Brayden Lamont, with players Blake Forbs, Sam Shaw, Evan Pontes, Kiara McHugh, Alivia Stockall and Angel Koch. The 10-team tournament is part of the intramurals program for Grade 6 and 7 students, where captains get to pick their players. The cup itself was originally made of paper mache, but upgraded to duck tape when the last tier was added. The winning team did a victory lap around the school.

ARTS FISHING FOR COMPLIMENTS

For the sixth year, Kerry Kunzki will be riding 400 kilometres in 18 hours in Ride2Survive. “I ride for my kids and my future grandkids,” said Kunzki. “I’m more looking to the future.” On June 19, 112 cyclists will be stopping in Pitt Meadows as part of their trek. Ride2Survive participants will be pedaling from Kelowna to North Delta in an effort to raise money for cancer research. A dozen of the riders are cancer survivors themselves, who will wear yellow as they lead the last stretch of the ride, called the Yellow Mile. “Our last stop is at Pitt Meadows. Show up and wave a flag, wear yellow, cheer us on, that would be great,” said Kunzki, who also does running operations. The group is scheduled to arrive at the Boston Pizza at 8-8:30 p.m. but anyone planning to come is encouraged to go to their website and check the GPS tracker to find out where they are. Kunzki has been there since the beginning and describes the first ride as “17 crazy dudes got on their bikes and tried it out, we didn’t bring enough food and we had a van beside us.” Michael Booth, media volunteer said, “Supporters are encouraged to come out wearing yellow to inspire riders to finish the race.”

Pitt museum sets slate for Heritage Thursdays

ummer is approaching quickly, and so are the many programs put on by the Pitt Meadows Museum. They have something for every member of the family. The 15th annual Heritage Thursdays children’s program is here and this year they’re bringing back one of our favourite themes: Decade Parade, where we’ll be time warping through the different decades of the twentieth century. During each session, the kids will learn groovy dance moves, make nifty crafts and have a far out time learning and interpreting history. The weekly program will be held from July 8 to August

are away, the Pitt Meadows Museum has something for you, too. Beginning on June 23rd they present: Let’s Get Digital - A beginning guide to new technology. The aim of these sessions is to introduce further skills to people who already have a base knowledge of computers. They will be using the Adobe Creative Suite and focusing on programs such as Photoshop and InDesign. They will also touch on creating basic websites using classic Html, Dreamweaver and online programs such as Flickr and Facebook. The museum is also hosting a botanical drawing class every Sunday between 1 and

2 p.m. that will run throughout the summer season. Bring your sketchbook and join the museum artists in our newly developed Heritage Garden for an introductory to classic drawing technique and flower identification. This year the 2010 B.C. Rhythmic Gymnastic Provincial Championships took place in Vancouver on June 12 and 13. Eight gymnasts from Club Adagio Rhythmic Gymnastics in Maple Ridge competed in the event and performed very well at the competition with successful results in many categories. The year end show for Club Adagio will take place at the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre gymnasium on Saturday, June 19th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Come and see Maple Ridge rhythmic gymnasts in their final performance of the season. Most people aren’t looking for powder in July, but if you are, you might find some if you take two chairlifts up Blackcomb and then hop on a bus and go to the Blackcomb Glacier terrain park. That’s where Kody Yarosloski will be snowboarding for a week this July. The deal he made with his parents was if he passed all his courses at school – he’s in Grade 8 at Garibaldi – and did 75 hours of yard work on their acreage in Whonnock, he could attend the weeklong camp. He has 17 hours of yard work to go and it looks like Grade 8 was a success. “It’s amazing – I like being outside, going through deep snow, in powder,” Kody said of his chosen sport. There are three rules at the Camp on Champions at the Blackcomb summer glacier camp: don’t do drugs, don’t drink and don’t be a dick. Any of these three will get you kicked out, said Kody’s mother Lisa Yarosloski. Generally a good attitude helps snowboarders, and this was one reason Kody was chosen to be on the B.C. Snowboard Association’s provincial development team. Some kids at the two-day tryouts that ran on May 6 and 7 were told to leave because of their attitude. Kody has been snowboarding since he was six years old and usually snowboards at Seymour and Grouse but recently has been spending more time in Whistler. It wasn’t always easy going for the young snowboarder – he remembers his first time on the hill being upset at the challenge. But his confidence has blossomed over the years, and Lisa credits this to years of Sun Hang Do training which took him from being an extremely shy child to a self-confident young athlete. Kody eventually completed his third-degree black belt under Dave Kinney. While the development team will cost a pretty penny, Lisa said the experience of working with professional coaches and snowboarders from September to April is “priceless.” To train for “air awareness,” the development team will do trampoline practice with the snowboard on. That teaches them to b e c o m e m o re a w a re o f where they are as they flip and twist in the air – a lot like trampoline athletes need to be aware of their surroundings as they flip in the air. Kody’s big goal this year is to land a rodeo – a back flip with a spin.

Erin, 17, took gold in the Junior Women Category (under 21 years), with scores in her two rounds of 371

Fish biting at derby

he Chamber of Commerce serving Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows along with their partners hosted the second annual Alouette Lake Fishing Derby Sunday under the watchful peaks of the Golden Ears Mountains. The day began with a vibrant sunrise over the eastern lake shore as 78 fishermen of all ages prepared to do battle with Alouette Lake’s

fishing education centre and a hot lunch provided by the Kiwanis Club of the Golden Ears. Last year’s winner, Ernie Ryz, pulled a 12-pound Dolly Varden Trout out of the lake while doing some prefishing a few weeks ago but was not as lucky this time around. This year’s biggest fish, a two-pound Rainbow, was

Summer is the most critical season of the year to conserve water. The demand for water can nearly double on hot summer days. So Metro Vancouver is calling on all residents and businesses to comply with lawn sprinkling regulations that came into effect on June 1. The restriction remains in place until Sept. 30. During June, July, August and September, sprinkling

will be permitted between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m. and between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. on the following days: Wednesday and Saturday for even-numbered addresses and Thursday and Sunday for odd-numbered addresses. “We have plenty of water for drinking but shouldn’t be drowning our grass or hosing down our driveways in the middle of summer,” said Tim Stevenson, Chair of Metro

Vancouver’s Water Committee. “Drink lots of tap water on a hot summer’s day. But don’t waste this world-class resource on grass that will green up again in the fall.” Since 1993, lawn sprinkling regulations have been in effect from June 1 to Sept. 30 every year. Analysis shows the twice-weekly sprinkling restrictions have led to reductions in peak day per-capita water use of 25

per cent. Reducing outdoor water use is particularly important in summer to ensure there is sufficient supply to meet peak and emergency water demands. If businesses and residents in the region continue to conserve water, it will allow Metro Vancouver to push back the date when new pipelines and reservoirs will have to be built - minimizing additional costs to
