Raw sewage dumped into Fraser River City wants answers from Metro Vancouver BY A LAN CAMPBELL

Richmond city officials are demanding an explanation from Metro Vancouver — after it was revealed that up to 154 million litres of partially treated and raw sewage leaked into the Fraser River. The two spills — from the Metro Vancouver-run Iona Island and Lulu Island treatment plants — happened last December during two power outages. The 38 million litres of sewage that flooded into the south arm of the Fraser from the Lulu site at the foot of Gilbert Road had undergone a non-mechanical primary treatment at the time of the leak, although environmentalists say the leak was still toxic. However, the 116 million litres that flowed into the north arm from the Iona plant on Sea Island was raw sewage overflowing from a containment pod. City officials, including Mayor Malcolm Brodie, are unhappy about the fact they were completely unaware of the incident until it was reported in the Toronto Star this week, along with a

catalogue of major sewage leaks across Canada. Now city council has written to Metro Vancouver demanding the full details of the spill and wanting to know the organization’s reporting procedures for such an incident. “I was absolutely dumbfounded,” Brodie told The Province newspaper. “Dumbfounded that there could be such an incident, and more alarmed that the city was not told about it at the time. “Any time there is a major issue of this sort, it’s only fair there should be communication between Metro Vancouver and Richmond immediately — and, hopefully, remedial steps are taken.” Brodie added that he has no idea if long-lasting environmental damage resulted from December’s spill. Senior abandons legal fight against landlord BY NELSON BENNETT

A Richmond woman who led the fight against Amacon over mass evictions at Richmond Gardens more than four years ago has had to abandon a civil suit against her landlord due to the prohibitive cost of litigation in B.C. Laara Raynier launched a civil action against Amacon in August 2007, alleging harassment. The alleged harassment included numerous suite inspections and eviction notices. The day she filed her suit, she received her seventh eviction notice, and she said she has received two more since then. Raynier has had every one of them overturned by the Residential Tenancy Branch, and still lives at Richmond Gardens. But it hasn’t been easy. In fact, the widow who is in her mid-70s, describes it as “four and three-quarters years of madness.” “It’s been quite an education,” Raynier said. What she learned is that civil court in B.C. has become almost the exclusive domain of governments and corporations that can afford the high court costs. Ordinary citizens in B.C. stand little chance of fighting a civil action, unless they want to risk losing and having to pay astronomical court and legal fees. “There are many, many impediments to access in general,” says Alan Parker, executive director of Access Pro Bono, a Vancouverbased legal organization that provides legal advice to people who can’t afford a lawyer and who can’t get Legal Aid. “Certainly the costs of your own lawyer is a challenge. The prospect of court costs being awarded against you is another.” Parker’s organization can provide legal advice, but doesn’t have the resources to take on full legal battles like Raynier’s. “We’re not an alternative to a properly funded legal aid system or to a properly accessible justice system,” said Parker. Raynier’s suit was set down for a 10-day trial earlier this year, but

Laara Raynier, who’s in her 70s, has had seven eviction notices overturned she said she recently had to accept Amacon’s offer that it would not counter-sue for legal costs if she dropped the suit. Without a lawyer to represent her, she feared she could lose her case, so she accepted. “I could not go to court unrepresented,” she said. “It’s just not right for a person to go to court on their own without the knowledge that the other side can bring against you.” Raynier is not alone. British Columbia has the highest court costs in Canada when it comes to civil litigation — something the Chief Justice of Canada, Beverley McLachlin, has remarked on. “For many people, the cost of a lawyer is out of reach, and complex legal procedures and delays

are denying people real access to justice,” she said at a justice forum in 2009. “Without legal help, people may face months, if not years, of personal difficulty as they attempt to navigate the sometimes complex demands of law and procedures. In some cases, people give up entirely.” McLachlin said evictions are the kind of civil actions many ordinary Canadians can no longer afford to fight in court. She said some courts report nearly half of litigants and defendants are representing themselves in civil court because they can’t afford a lawyer. If you’re accused of killing someone and can’t afford a lawyer, the government provides one for

you. But if you try to launch a civil action, you have to pay the court costs yourself. That’s not so much of a problem anywhere else in Canada, but in B.C. the court fees can be prohibitive. A trial that would cost $800 in Alberta would cost $40,000 in B.C., according to Peter Ritchie, the lawyer who represented the family of a victim of the sinking of the Queen of the North ferry. Like Raynier, they too had to drop their civil action due to prohibitive court costs. Even when someone may have a good case, Parker said many law firms will be reluctant to take a case on contingency if the likely payout is in the order of $20,000, which might not even cover the actual court and legal costs. Raynier’s trial was set down for 10 days. The fees for the courtroom alone for 10 days would have amounted to $3,640, according to one estimate. That’s not including all the other court fees she would have had to pay. She might also have had to pay Amacon’s legal costs, if she lost. “Lawyers tell me it was about $100,000, if I lost the case,” Raynier said. She might never have bothered with the suit in the first place had the Residential Tenancy Branch had the will or authority to order landlords to stop issuing eviction notices. Raynier’s MLA, Rob Howard, agrees nine unsuccessful eviction notices is “crazy.” “I don’t know what could cause anybody to try nine different times for the same thing and keep getting rejected,” he said. “That just sounds a little off.” Parker said the B.C. government has cut funding to Legal Aid to the point where many people who can’t afford a lawyer are denied legal representation. He said the government could address the problems of prohibitive legal costs by setting up more, low-cost mediation services to settle disputes out of court. Continued from page 1 there’s no alternative routing to provide power,” Cummins said. “I can’t see how a facility like that could tolerate a 24-hour shutdown. I think that’s totally wrong and inappropriate.” Metro Vancouver operations manager Paul Lam said the Iona Island sewage spewed into the Fraser after a containment pond reached capacity during a three-hour power failure. Lam added that the untreated sewage was diluted by heavy storm-water flow. The Lulu Island spill into the south arm of the Fraser River happened during a 16hour power outage the same day, which forced the plant to release 38 million litres of effluent that had received only primary treatment, not the usual secondary treatment, Lam said. He said the two leaks happened concurrently during a major regional power outage, and that Metro Vancouver filed emergency reports to Environment Canada and provincial authorities right away. Lam said Metro Vancouver informs any municipality of major sewage spills — but that the two spills in December in Richmond are not considered major. Lam said that Metro Vancouver completed toxicity tests the next day and judged

there was no environmental damage. Following the two incidents, there have been system upgrades at both plants, improvements in monitoring and improved delivery of power to the Lulu Island wastetreatment plant, he added. Despite Metro Vancouver’s assurances that the two Richmond spills were not toxic, Christianne Wilhelmson, executive director of the Georgia Strait Alliance, a marine environmental-protection group, disagreed. “If you have a large volume of primary treated sewage hitting the water at one time, you could have an acute toxic effect if any creatures are going by,” she said. “This is serious when something like this happens, and I’d hope Metro Vancouver would be more forthright about this happening. It’s our right, if we live in these areas, to know this is going on.” The media report released this week by the Canadian Press detailed how far more sewage has been spilled in Canadian urban centres over the last six years than any other harmful contaminant. The analysis revealed hundreds of millions of litres of sewage, as well as many other dangerous liquids, have been dumped right under Canadians’ noses. — with files from the Province

Why did Dziekanski die? Thomas Braidwood issuing inquiry report today

The Tasering of Robert Dziekanski at Vancouver International Airport on Oct. 14, 2007 gave the RCMP a black eye, and the Richmond RCMP in particular. But it wasn’t just missteps by the RCMP that ultimately led to Dziekanski’s death, and the lawyer who represented his mother during the Braidwood Inquiry says he’s interested to see what commissioner Thomas Braidwood will have to say about all the other agencies involved. “I think everybody has concentrated on the RCMP and the four officers and what happened there,” said Walter Kosteckjy. “I’m looking forward to what he says about the airport. I’m also looking forward to hearing about Canadian Border Services.” He was speaking in anticipation of Braidwood’s final report, which was to be made public Friday. Dziekanski’s death was caught on video by Paul Pritchard. It became the cornerstone of the Braidwood Inquiry, providing stark contradictions to RCMP’s version of what happened. Dziekanski, a 40-year-old Polish immigrant who spoke no English, had arrived at Vancouver International Airport at about 3:15 p.m. Oct. 13, 2007. He passed initial customs screening but did not show up to secondary customs screening until around 10:45 p.m. Meanwhile, as he languished in the customs area for more than six hours, his mother, Zofia Cisowski, had been making inquiries about her son. She was told there was no record of him having arrived and was told

she might as well go home to Kamloops, where she lives. In December 2007, YVR announced more than $1 million worth of funding to close some of the gaps that contributed to Dziekanski’s death, including improved language interpretation services. But Kosteckyj said one of the biggest gaps has never been closed: The inability of people to determine whether their relative, or whoever they’re picking up, has arrived. “I think the airport did a very good PR job to begin with,” Dziekanski said. “They made a lot of changes. The one change that is not made is that you have no way to contact one of your relatives or loved ones if they happen to be in the area. “They sit behind privacy (laws),” Kosteckyj said. Kosteckyj said he is also interested in hearing what Braidwood has to say about Canada Border Services Agency. “They had a protocol and that protocol wasn’t followed on this particular night,” Kosteckyj said. He explained CBSA is supposed to have “rovers” whose job it is to patrol the secure customs area, searching bathrooms and generally ensuring that someone isn’t trying to slip into the country illegally. “On the night in question there were supposed to be two rovers working,” Kostekyj said. “We never heard from those rovers. What a lot of crap, literally So, a power outage shuts down two sewage treatment plants in Richmond, allowing 154 million litres of untreated waste to spill into the Fraser River in December, and our elected officials only learn about it after the Canadian Press reports it six months later. What irks local politicians is that Metro Vancouver staff didn’t think this little oopsy was worth telling them about it. Mayor Malcolm Brodie was justifiably annoyed that he had to learn about the incident from the media. We suspect this happens more often than politicians would like to think. In some cases, bureaucrats may simply be insulating them from having to deal with something that, in the grand scheme of things, isn’t that grave, but which may have some bad optics. In other cases, they may be insulating something else: Their butts. Considering how much raw sewage Victoria, Montreal and recreational boaters dump into our oceans on a daily basis, the amount of raw and partially treated sewage that escaped in December may indeed be small. In many respects, the ocean is like one big toilet bowl. Organic waste is actually part of the ocean’s food web. It’s the other stuff we flush down our toilets that poses the problem for our oceans: Chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and human pathogens. What we had here was an accidental release. But cities like Victoria and Montreal are still getting away with pumping untreated sewage directly into the Juan de Fuca Straight and St. Lawrence River on a continual basis. When you consider this, you might understand why those in charge at Metro Vancouver didn’t think the December sewage spill was worth telling anyone about because, compared to what Victoria is doing, it’s a drop in the ocean.

Goose taught me to smarten up The Editor, Re: “Construction and geese don’t fly,” Opinion, June 11. Perhaps you’ve already had other persons e-mailing you, but I’m pretty sure that the goose you see now, is the second one to use the nest. I watched the first one with concern as well, until the signs and tape were finally put up ... wondering how on Earth was mother goose going to keep her goslings safe. I would see her as I drove to work in the morning and looked forward to seeing her again at night. Apparently they take seven to 10 days to lay their eggs and only until the last one is laid, does the gestation begin — 21 days. One day she gave me a whole different perspective on things. This was after waiting in line at a produce store and listening to a loud-mouthed bore declare the line wasn’t moving fast enough. This was after he had already been walking around, taking his time picking his items and all the while conversing loudly on his Bluetooth. As I drove, I was busy chastising myself for being a coward not speaking out to tell him to get a life. I slowed down as I drove past the little goose and there she was, hunched against the driving rain and all she did was shake her head, flinging off the rain drops and seeming to pull herself in a little tighter against the weather. There she sat, though rain, sun and wind ... day and night, unwavering. Here I was, grumbling and complaining and listening to others who do the same. Seeing her gave me a real ‘smarten up’ moment. I would always get a jolt of concern when she wasn’t there, logic said she was probably off getting a much-needed something to eat. At the same time, there was another goose giving close inspection of the nest. This second little goose is just the same, and I still always look forward to seeing her. I hope the people who put up the tape and signs are aware of when this one started ‘sitting’ and might be around when the eggs hatch. I feel lucky to have had these moments and wish mother and babies safe journey. Pam Porter Richmond

I hope our teens are listening

Three young people have been stabbed to death in B.C. in the past month, all seemingly killed over minor disputes. First there was Angela Qiu, 17, stabbed to death May 21 outside a Knight Street house party. Katey Gonzales, 18, from Surrey, has been charged with second-degree murder in the incident, after she turned herself in. No motive for the altercation has been mentioned by police. The second teen to die from stabbing died in remarkably similar circumstances. Ashlee Hyatt, 16, was stabbed June 2 also at a house party and also allegedly by another teen girl. Police said a 16-year-old girl was arrested after the killing. One witness told reporters that Ashlee intervened in an argument between two other girls and ended up stabbed, saying, “I don’t want to die.” And then on June 3, Justin Wendland, 15, was stabbed to death while waiting for a bus in Victoria. The man who turned himself in to police and who is now charged with the murder is reported to have been struggling with mental health and addiction. Three young people, with lives full of potential, were killed over nothing in the span of 13 days. And why? In the case of Justin Wendland it would appear that he was the proverbial innocent bystander, caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, who encoun-

tered someone struggling with inner demons. He’d been out swimming and was making his way home, which seems a wholesome activity for a 15-year-old boy. His death was a very unfortunate and tragic incident, but apparently random. For Angela Qiu and Ashlee Hyatt a different story emerges. For one thing, both were allegedly killed by another girl in the heat of a teenage fight. University of Victoria professor Sibylle Artz, who researched Reena Virk’s death, told the Province that homicides committed by girls are extremely rare. “It’s important to remember that homicides committed by girls are so uncommon that they are not even one per cent of the 650 homicides in Canada each year,” she said. And now we have two in a matter of as many weeks. I have no conception of what type of knife is used in this type of attack, but I shudder to imagine these teenage girls packing their weapon in their purse along with their lip gloss and eyeliner. And to think of them then getting angry, but not so angry they forget about the knife in their purse or their pocket. I can’t stand the thought that they pull

the knife out and they don’t just use it as a threat, they actually cut another person with it, badly enough to kill them. The mind boggles. I was a teenager myself, back in the dark ages, and I remember plenty of fights, even one or two between girls. But for the most part, the girl fights were verbal: teen girls have nasty mouths and they don’t hesitate to use their words to express their teenage anger and angst. Now, two girls are dead, and two others have ruined their own lives. As parents, we need to talk to our kids and let them know these things are happening, and that it’s not OK to be carrying around weapons. We may hesitate to invade our children’s privacy, but this is ridiculous. If you have reason to believe that your child might be leaving the house with a knife, by all means, search their purse. If you find something, take it away. “Don’t carry weapons. If you carry weapons, you intend on using [them],” Ashlee Hyatt’s father Greg Hyatt was quoted in news reports. “Don’t go to a party, get drunk and be tough. People have got to understand when you’re drunk and do something silly — or stupid, in this case — it changes everybody’s lives.” He should know, he’s lost a daughter. Kindness of strangers defines Richmond lost and confused soon-tobecome ward of the state pooch. Please understand that I’m not the least bit interested in seeing an animal, whom appeared to be well groomed with a collar and little blue jean bandana attached to his very warm neck, incarcerated until his owners came to bail him out. However, in my lifetime I’ve witnessed dogs who are essentially family members, run down by unsuspecting motorists and the drama that ensues. While standing at the side of Williams Road waiting for the animal control officer, a member of our city’s public works department stopped by the side of the road and I explained the situation to him. Just as we were talking, the dog’s owner appeared and stated that the dog on my leash (attached to my belt loop) was indeed hers. I explained to her that her dog was standing in the middle of Williams as dump trucks, buses, commercial vehicles and cars

were swerving to avoid hitting it. Furthermore, I made it clear to her that not only would she lose a clearly valued member of their home, but the trauma felt by a motorist accidently killing the dog would be just as great. I agreed to hand her pet over provided she go home and get a proper leash to walk the pooch home. If my daughter or any other family member was to accidently let our beloved six month old puppy out I would hope and pray someone like myself would act in the same responsible manner. I truly believe that this kind of good citizenship is what makes Richmond a good place to live. When people turn a blind eye to a lost animal as it wonders confused and frightened through traffic on any of our busy thorough fares its as serious as a small child or elderly member of society in a similar situation. If I came across an elderly member of our

community who might be suffering from Alzeimers or dimentia and seemed lost, I would certainly do everything I could to help. Similarly, I encourage everyone who is in a position to aid an animal in distress to step up the plate and do as I did in the name of my beloved pet and everyone else’s beloved pets. These acts of kindness and responsibility are the cornerstone of a healthy community like Richmond. Aging Canadians have apparently not saved enough to help fund their retirement. In the last year, there has been extensive discussion about how the CPP might be changed to help. Well, it appears that what came out of the Charlottetown meetings earlier this week was just a gradual increase in CPP premiums and, ultimately, CPP payments. I had hoped for more changes. I suppose what the Finance Minister may be saying, indirectly, is that Canadians will have to use other savings vehicles in order to fund their retirement. These vehicles will include RRSPs and Tax Free Savings Accounts (among others). We do have to make our own plans, and save funds. And I do expect in future that there will be more changes to the CPP but I think this was a missed opportunity to assist Canadians, some of whom probably need that assistance now.

The Editor, I just returned from my daily bike ride along Williams Road, when just west of the intersection of Williams and No. 2 roads I came across a small dog standing in the middle of the street. My immediate reaction was one of horror and concern for the safety of a vulnerable member of our community. I quickly got off my bike and being a dog owner myself, I attached a leash (that I always wear secured to my belt loop), onto the collar of the lost pooch. I then began knocking and ring doors in the neighborhood to locate the pooch’s home. The locals in the neighborhood pointed me in various directions and to no avail, the owner was not found. As a result, one neighbor who is a dog owner herself understood my dilemma and let me use her phonebook and telephone to call the Richmond animal control department and request that an animal control officer come out to retrieve our

Cool spring spawns hot deals

Our promising start to spring sort of fizzled as the weeks of rain carried on, and many of you have told me you feel far behind in the spring planting. I met one lady at a local nursery three weeks ago who asked me if a particular plant was a perennial or not. I replied it was, and she said “I’m not buying much, it’s so late.” I told her it wasn’t too late at all, and it isn’t. Many of our local nurseries are chock a block loaded with plants. Because of our delayed spring, they are eager to unload their plants and many are having sales already. Someone else asked my husband if it was too late to start peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes from seed. Both of us said yes, but seedlings are readily available and very inexpensive. On the other hand, there is still plenty of time to plant beans, corn, potatoes and peas. Peas thrive in this cool weather, and there are so many varieties. Hanging baskets are sale

priced, but if you can’t find what you want, there is penty of time to plant your own. It only takes a week or two for them to fill out (don’t let them dry out and keep them well fertilized) and you definately feel a great sense of accomplishment. Pay attention to location — if your basket is to hang in full sun or shade then it is critical that the plants match the environment. Look at the baskets that are for sale and pick your plants from what they contain. Don’t be afraid to ask the nursery staff for advice — they want you to succeed. Our cool weather has made it an abundant year for slugs, and whether you surround your seedlings with crushed eggshells, hair (neither which has worked for

us, but hey — give it a try) providing beer for refreshment, slug bait, or nightly attacks with scissors, one has to be vigilant. It can almost reduce me to tears to see the seedlings we have grown with such tender care for weeks chewed to bits overnight. The upside to our damp spring is that it has been great transplanting weather. If you can manage to transplant plants either from one area of your garden to another or from the nursery, it is best to do it when it is cool out. This is far less stressful for the plants and results in less “droopy” shock. Buy from our locals — we are so lucky here in Richmond to have so many nurseries at our doorsteps — an abundance of choice! Donning pink shirts or crazy pink costumes, golfers hit the greens at the Richmond Golf Country Club to raise money for a $60,000 Sentinel Gamma Probe for Richmond Hospital. The probe will help breast cancer patients by removing only the cancerous nodes — usually only one or two, rather than all 18 lymph nodes. The avid golfers raised $7,830 during the Pink Ribbon Golf Tournament held Saturday, May 29. During the gala dinner afterwards, Dr. Sharadh Sampath, general surgeon at Richmond Hospital, explained how the

Sentinel Gamma Probe will help breast cancer patients by detecting only cancerous nodes. The Sentinel Gamma Probe allows surgeons, during surgery, to stage breast cancers, to determine the course of therapy, and to evaluate the potential spread of cancer to lymph node tissues and organs. “We are grateful that the women members have chosen to support us and to help fund this specialized equipment to better treat breast cancer,” said Lisa Westermark, CEO of the Richmond Hospital Foundation “Their donation will improve care for hundreds of women in Richmond each year.”

Richmond storefronts. This issue has been overdue for discussion, since abandoned and surrendered dogs have been a major issue in Richmond for a very long time. These dogs often come from pet stores, but also come from pet dealers, otherwise known as puppy mills, selling directly to the public. Some interesting ideas were tossed around by the Richmond city council and since dogs and cats are abandoned and abused every day in Richmond, we urgently need to address this issue. One of the solutions considered by council was the development and enforcement of regulations for dog breeders. The idea has merit in that it addresses the issue of impromptu puppy mill-style breeding operations in the home of individual residents. This is definitely needed, and I encourage city council to move forward with these ideas. But the issue of animal overpopulation, surrender and abandonment in

Richmond will not be solved until we, as a community, recognize the magnitude and the severity of animal overpopulation in Richmond, shut down the puppy and kitten mill operations, and ensure that all our pets are spayed and neutered. Approximately seven million dogs and cats enter animal shelters each year in North America. Around 25 per cent of those dogs in shelters are purebred, but in Richmond over 57 per cent of dogs in the Richmond Animal Shelter are purebred. So although I think that dog breeding should be regulated to prevent puppy mill-style breeding facilities, with seven million dogs and cats entering shelters every year, should we really be selling animals at all? According the GPC meeting minutes, local pet stores sell more than 200 puppies annually and pet dealers sell even more. However, with just one search on Petfinder.com I found that there are currently 798 dogs for adoption in Richmond and the surround-

ing area! Of those 798 dogs, 53 are puppies. I don’t think we need more dogs or cats being bred and sold in Richmond when we have such a huge number that are already homeless. The costs of pet abandonment and surrender are felt by Richmond’s residents everyday when we pay our taxes to deal with this disturbing and ever-expanding issue of overpopulation. Please contact city council and encourage them to proceed to legislation to restrict animal sales in Richmond. Well over 798 dogs will thank you. You can enter your city or postal code and find all the dogs, cats, birds and rabbits for adoption in your area. You can even search for a new pet by age, gender, size, and breed. An appealing styling feature of the Lancer is its “shark attack” snout, plus it has a dramatic wedge-like side profile. The GTS edition is very easy to spot with its big (over the top) rear deck lid spoiler. The cabin size is generous, feels roomy for a compact car and is suited to bigger than average occupants. While there’s excellent fore/ aft adjustment on the driver’s seat, having attained a comfortable leg/ pedal position, I found myself having to reach a bit more

hen Lesley Hicks much-loved father, 82-year-old Percy Hicks, became too ill to be cared for at home or in hospital, the family struggled with what to do. Then the family — Lesley, mother Iris and brothers Paul, Eric and Tony Hicks — were referred to Richmond’s Salvation Army’s Rotary Hospice House. At first, Lesley Hicks said they were all reluctant, thinking the hospice would be a depressing and dismal last home for a father they cherished. Once they stepped through the doors, they soon changed their minds. “From the minute we walked into the hospice, it felt like home,” said Lesley Hicks, whose dad died in May 2009. “His room was lovely, like a hotel room, and all the medical equipment was nicely hidden.” She went on to add that they were moved by the added touches in the hospice, such as the large windows overlooking the gardens and the cozy homemade quilts on the beds, courtesy of local volunteers. The hospice also encourages family members to bring any personal item that might make their loved ones’ final journey a little easier on everyone involved. “My brothers brought their guitars and keyboards and had singsongs for dad, and we brought bird feeders for his balcony,” Hicks said. “Dad especially enjoyed looking at the grounds, which are so lovely … it really didn’t feel like a hospice.” Hicks said she could go on and on about the special care given by the staff, or the meals which came on dishes you’d serve at home, or the way the staff made the entire family, and more importantly their father, feel

The moment Percy Hicks, above, became a resident at the Salvation Army home, his family knew they’d made the right decision. like they were important and valued. “It could have been a horrific time, but it wasn’t because dad was treated with dignity and respect,” she said. “I only hope that when it’s my time, that I will be treated the same way. “We often go back to the hospice and visit the staff and my mom brings them baked goods.” Another important benefit for the Hicks family was that a real bond and support system developed with the other family members. “We were all there for the same reason and it helped to have people understand and relate to what you were going through …

we seem to draw strength from each other,” Hicks said. “The staff loved my dad so much. He knew, of course, that he was dying, and they helped bring him peace during his final weeks of life.” Those sentiments are echoed often by families, said Major Margaret Evans, the executive director of the local Salvation Army’s Rotary Hospice House. “When most family members visit the hospice for the first time they are surprised by how it feels,” Evans said as she gave a tour of the cheery, sunlit facility. “We often hear them tell us that they love that it’s a real home-like environment rather than a hospital.”

There is a fireplace and comfy couches in the “living room”, an open chapel and a lovely eating area. Evans went on to say that of its 10 beds, eight are reserved for Richmondites and two for Vancouver residents. “Family members and pets can come at any time of the day or night and each room has a flip-out bed so that family can stay overnight if they wish,” said Evans. However, the piece de resistance and Evans pride and joy are the flowering gardens. “We hired gardeners to create this beautiful and serene space,” she said. “We purposely kept it a little rustic with weathered wooden benches and a gazebo. “We had a resident once whose family opened up the doors of his room and wheeled him outside to enjoy the gardens.” The hospice, which is supported by Vancouver Coastal Health and the Rotary Club of Richmond, opened its doors in February 2006. It is an end-of-life palliative care facility for those with less than three months to live. “Since we opened our doors, we have cared for more than 300 people,” said Evans, adding priority is given to those the integrated palliative care team believes needs it most. “Each application is accessed by a team of professionals, including doctors and social workers, and no one is turned back if they can’t afford it … we will absorb the costs,” she said. “Anybody is welcome.” Its philosophy, added Evans, is to walk beside each resident to facilitate a gentle closure to life, with comfort, values and decisions respected and families supported. The 24/7 care team consists of a registered nurse, four LPN’s, a chaplain, care aids and cooking see Party page 26

ITALIAN BAKED STUFFED PEACHES Serves 4 INGREDIENTS: • 4 Large ripe peaches • 9 Crushed amaretti biscuits • 25g (1 oz) ground almonds • 1 egg yolk • 15 ml (1 T) cocoa powder, sifted • 30 ml (2 T) soft brown sugar

METHOD: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Wash the peaches and pat dry. Cut them in half following the natural line and remove the stone. Using a teaspoon, scoop out a little of the pulp from the middle of each peach half to create a cavity. Finely chop the scooped-out pulp. In a bowl, combine the chopped peach pulp, crushed amaretti biscuits, ground almonds, egg yolk and cocoa powder, and mix thoroughly until evenly blended. Fill the peach cavities with the almond mixture and place side by side in a baking dish. Sprinkle with brown sugar and bake in the oven for 25 minutes. Allow the peaches to cool and serve at room temperature, drizzled with the cooking juices.

INGREDIENTS: • 56 grams (2 oz) olive oil • 2 cloves of garlic • 1 small can of whole canned or crushed tomatoes • 2 ﬁllets of Anchovies • 1 small jar of pitted black olives • A spoonful of capers • Salt and pepper to taste • A pinch of crushed chilli peppers and oregano • Linguine for two

METHOD: Brown garlic and olive oil until tender. Add canned tomatoes. Add salt, pepper, oregano, and chillies to taste desired. Cook pasta on the side al dente. Mix anchovies, black olives, and capers in the sauce and then add it to the linguine. Serve hot. Add Parmesan cheese if desired.

From my desk, I watch the hail fall against the window in time with the clock’s steady heartbeat and my stomach mutters in agreement that it is time for lunch. Class ends and the bell rings its congratulations. I’m walking through the halls while more slowly, I’m Tiptoeing away from old memories. I’m now coming to where I know he stands, laughing with his friends. Completely at ease.

As part of our ongoing commitment to safety, Vancouver Airport Authority is conducting a mandatory runway lighting upgrade. This requires nightly closures of the south runway from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. from July 4 to August 28. During this time, the north runway will be used for departures and arrivals as required.

’04 champs strut their stuff at Chuckers alumni tourney Andrew Christie and Colin Schaap helped St. George’s win the prestigous Heavy Eight race at nationals.

Golden regatta for Richmond rowers

Four high school students from Richmond produced impressive results at the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association’s 65th annual regatta. The event was held on the 2,000-metre long Royal Canadian Henley Regatta Course in St. Catharines, Ontario. The three-day regatta attracted over 2400 athletes from 133 high schools from across North America. Grade 12 student Andrew Christie won the gold medal and the Sally Arbuthnut Trophy in the stroke seat of the senior men’s pair event. Christie and his partner posted the fastest qualifying times in both heats and semi-finals and raced down the course, leading wire-to-wire, in the final. Grade 11 student Colin Schaap competed in the senior men’s heavy four with coxswain event, advancing through preliminaries, semi-finals, and placing fifth in finals. Grade 10 students Cameron Howie and Calin Manea competed in the junior men’s lightweight four with coxswain and won the bronze medal.

Christie and Schaap also competed with their crew in the Senior Men’s Heavy Eight with coxswain — considered as the “blue ribbon” race of the regatta. Qualifying in first place through the semi-finals, the boys were excited to have the chance to compete for gold, and the most prestigious award in North American high school rowing — the Calder Cleland Memorial Trophy. At an estimated worth of over $200,000, the trophy is the most valuable sports award in Canada. By 300 meters, Christie, Schaap and their crew had earned a half boat margin over their rivals from Vancouver Island and the four other competitors. Over the remaining 1,700 meters, they extended their lead to almost six seconds as they crossed the finish line with a time of 6:04.59 for the win. Christie, Schaap, Howie and Manea all attend St. George’s School in Vancouver and train out of the John M.S. Lecky UBC Boathouse on the Middle Arm of the Fraser River in Richmond.

Prior to the final game, a moment of silence was held for long time Richmond Baseball coach Jack Oyhenart, whom passed away suddenly last month at the age of 56. Oyhenart was the first coach to bring Bantam AAA national gold to B.C., let alone to Richmond. He accomplished the feat in 1996 and again with Vancouver in 2000. While there are many people that deserve praise in putting the event together, the Chuckers send a a special thank-you to alumni coordinator John Kapp, Cindy Morrison, Jason Wegwitz Dave Rossi, Taylor Kipnes, the umpires and all those “unknown soldiers”, that manned the concession for over sevenhours. Many of them get to do it all over again when the Chuckers host the 2010 Midget AAA AllStar Game at Latrace Field on Saturday. Game time is 1:30 p.m.

Richmond City Baseball and the 2010 Midget AAA Chuckers hosted the “Chucker’s Alumni” this past weekend under beautiful skies at Latrace Field. While the competition was secondary to renewing old acquaintances, the “04 ProShow” won the three-team Challenge Cup — defeating the more recent Alumni Grads 5-0 in the final. Both teams got past the present Midget AAA crew 2-1 in the casual, round-robin affair. The winners were made up largely of the 2004 provincial champion Midget AAA Chuckers. head coach of that team, Josh Ridgway, was heard to say:“There’s no shame in losing to these guys. They could flat out play in 2004 and they can still play.” The tournament got off to an incredible start when the family of “Superfan,” John Stephenson, donated $1000 to the Chuckers Alumni in his memory. At the time of Stephenson’s passing last April, a commitment was made to recognize those that went over and beyond in helping to further the Chuckers’ program

Richmond Minor offers free hockey tryout Richmond Minor Hockey is hosting its first of three Try Hockey events on Saturday at the Richmond Ice Centre. Children ages four and up are encouraged to give hockey a try, free of charge. All equipment will also be provided.

The session is slated to run from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Garage rink. Registration is not required. The association also has other Try Hockey dates scheduled for Aug. 14 and Aug. 22.
