Space is limited to highlight all the services offered so you are encouraged to contact the individual organizations for more information. About the Leisure Guide This production of the Leisure Guide is presented cooperatively between the Parks, Recreation & Culture Department and the Association of Community Programmers, which include the Academy of Music, Arts Council, Community Schools, Leisure Recreation Group, Chilliwack Community Services, Chilliwack Family YMCA, Chilliwack and Yarrow Libraries, Museum, School District #33, Seniors Resources Society, and affiliated groups.
Service Commitment Leisure facilities and services are provided in the community by partnership of the Parks, Recreation & Culture Department, and organizations. We all take pride in the facilities and services we offer and strive to make each and every leisure experience a memorable one.

Upon reading through, you will notice the diverse and dynamic programming the City of Chilliwack, in partnership with the Association of Community Programmers, has developed for your enjoyment. The Chilliwack Cultural Centre, now in full operation, brings an offering of some amazing performances to the community. The contributions from some of Chilliwack’s arts and cultural organizations offers a wide variety of programs such as pottery, textile, guitar and piano lessons are available to anyone interested in encouraging the artist within. In addition, the Cheam and Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centres provide an ‘open all day’ schedule for you to enjoy a swim or workout at a time of your convenience. We invite you to use this guide as the resource for providing opportunities to becoming, or remaining, Active For Life. The Landing Sports Centre There is more to this facility then meets the eye. Located at 45530 Spadina Avenue this facility has the ability to host large functions, multiple sporting events, small meetings and is also ideal for weddings and other social gatherings.

Facility Rental Information Whether for a meeting, conference, banquet, wedding, dance, birthday party or sporting event the City of Chilliwack has a variety of facilities of various sizes that will accommodate your needs. For more information or to book facilities or sports fields please contact the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department at 604-793-2904.
• The main floor has a seating capacity of 1,872 people • The loft area can host 250 people a wedding or banquet setting and can host up to 300 people for a meeting setting. • If a small meeting room is what you are looking for the Clover Room has a meeting capacity of 30 people. The Landing Sports Centre is unique in that is also has four indoor tennis courts for drop-in tennis from October1st through to March 31st of each year. Evergreen Hall Located at 9291 Corbould Street the Evergreen Hall is a prime location for weddings, meetings of various sizes, and a variety of sporting events. The large Cheam Room has a built in stage available and stage risers are available for use as well. • The Cheam Room a full size gymnasium will host 400-450 people in a banquet setting and up to 658 people in theatre style setting • The Slesse Room has a capacity of 50-80 people • The Minto Room, ideal for smaller gatherings, in capable of hosting 20-25 people
Twin Rinks The Twin Rinks Arena, located at 5725 Tyson Road hosts two full size sheets of ice ideal for hosting large sporting events in both the winter and summer. The facility is also very popular for skating parties with a private dressing room also available (ask about our special party package). If you are interested in public skating but do not own you own skates there are rental skates available for your use here as well. Minor Hockey, Figure Skating and Speed Skating are a few organizations who call Twin Rinks home. The facility also has two meeting rooms, one with a 30 person capacity and the other with a 99 person capacity. Both rooms have audio, visual equipment available for rent as well.
Outdoor Sports Venues The City of Chilliwack has over 58 sports fields and 95 ball diamonds available to the community for recreational and league play. All groups and organizations wanting to play on any of these fields must first obtain a Facility Use Agreement from the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department. Regular sport groups should contact their league scheduler for times and fields available.
Portable Display Screen The City of Chilliwack’s portable display screen is 10 feet high, 17 feet long and contains over 245, 000 LED lights. Just like the ones you find in major sporting venues, the City’s portable screen has the capability of displaying DVD/video presentations, cable TV or live camera feeds. What an ideal way to broadcast your special event, or game. For information about renting the portable screen please contact the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department at 604-793-2904.

THE GREAT BLUE HERON NATURE RESERVE
The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve is a beautiful wetland site located along the Vedder River. Managed by the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society, the site is known for one of the largest the breeding colonies of Great Blue Herons in BC, as well as a wide variety of wildlife. Come walking and discover this lovely place at the south end Sumas Prairie Road in Greendale. There are no admission fees to walk the site or to visit the Rotary Interpretive Centre. The GBHNR Society is a non pro¿t organization and we welcome you to get involved in our conservation work. Consider supporting the Heron Reserve by volunteering, taking out a membership, making a donation or visiting our gift shop!

The site is open all year round and volunteers keep the Rotary Interpretive Centre open seven days a week, 364 days a year. Rotary Interpretive Centre 10:00 am to 4:00 pm (Feb 1 to Oct 31) 11:00 am to 3:00 pm (Nov 1to Jan 31) Walking Trails and Site open dawn to dusk NOTE: On rare occasions, Rotary Interpretive Centre is closed due to extreme weather or volunteer staff having to cancel at the last minute.

Community Profile - Gwynne Vaughan Park Located on the corner of Williams Road and Hope River Road, the Gwynne Vaughan Park consists of 6 acres of lawns, gardens and paths, all surrounding a heritage house built in 1896. This beautiful and unique park has become an increasingly popular site for wedding ceremonies, club picnics and family gatherings. Gwynne Vaughan Park offers a number of seasonally changing and beautifully planned settings for either large or small groups, whether it’s the Rotary Pavilion, a forest grove, or flower borders surrounding large wellmaintained lawns. It is also popular with local residents who enjoy a daily walk through the Park’s gardens and winding paths. Currently the Park also offers 20 community garden plots for Chilliwack residents who wish to produce their own fresh vegetables and flowers, meet new friends, share gardening ideas and expertise and enjoy the Park together. Thousands of plant lovers and bargain hunters visit the Gwynne Vaughan Park every year for the annual Plant Sale and Garden Party. Held the first Saturday in June, it includes more than 30 nurseries from around the Fraser Valley, featuring rare water plants, Japanese maples, specialty herbs and vegetables, and unusual perennials and shrubs which are not always available in local nurseries. Some garden
crafts and art are also available. A traditional strawberry tea held on the front lawn under the century-old maple tree is a popular treat. Local musicians, a variety of food, raffles, and children’s activities such as face-painting all make this a most enjoyable day. The money raised from this event goes to maintain and enhance the Gwynne Vaughan Park. There is also a popular holly and wreath sale every December, using material from the Gwynne Vaughan’s own trees and shrubs. Willed to the City of Chilliwack in 1991, the Park is administered by the Gwynne Vaughan Park Society. The Gwynne Vaughan Park Board and members of the Society, with the support and co-operation of the City of Chilliwack Parks, Recreation and Culture Department, develop and maintain the Park’s heritage house and its beautiful gardens and trees. The Gwynne Vaughan Park has received many generous donations over the years from both individuals and community groups, including the Chilliwack Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Chilliwack-Fraser and the Chilliwack Foundation. Lifesaving Courses The Bronze awards are a progressive program building knowledge and skills for water rescue- these are prerequisites and prepare participants for the National Lifeguard Service. Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross - ask about the prerequisites. Red Cross First Aid and CPR courses • Emergency First Aid, • Standard First Aid • Emergency Childcare First Aid oCPR level C • First Aid Basics for Kids(9-12yrs) full courses and recertifications Pleasure Craft Operator Card (9 years+) The Canadian Coast Guard PCO card is earned by scoring 75% on a test of basic boating safety knowledge. This lifetime certification must be carried onboard by operators of all pleasure craft powered by a motor. Take the BOAT study guide home and take the test when you’re ready. Affordable Recreation
The strength of a community can often be measured by the health and wellness of the members with in it.
The City of Chilliwack believes that, within reason, its citizens’ financial circumstances should not present a barrier for them to access leisure activities.
Leisure Access Pass Residents living within the City of Chilliwack who have limited financial resources, are encouraged to apply for a Leisure Access Pass. This pass will allow the holder a price- reduced entry into the Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre, Cheam Leisure Centre or any City run public program offered at Prospera Centre or Twin Rinks. Applications are available at the Parks, Recreation & Culture Department at Chilliwack City Hall, the Cheam Leisure Centre, the Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre or online at www.chilliwack.com
Grade 5 Get Active Facility Pass With the primary purpose of increasing participation and fitness levels of Grade five students, the Chilliwack Active Communities Committee is pleased to provide the Grade 5 Get Active Facility Pass program. In partnership with the City of Chilliwack Parks, Recreation & Culture, Leisure Recreation Group, the Chilliwack Family YMCA and the Chilliwack School District this pass is made available to all grade five public, home or private schooled students in Chilliwack. The facility pass provides free admission to public swims, skates and selected drop-in sports from September 1, 2010 to August 31, 2011. Get your pass, GET ACTIVE! KidSport™ KidSport™ provides support to children to remove financial obstacles that prevent them from playing organized sport. The mission statement of KidSport™ Canada states: “We believe that no kids should be left on the sidelines and all should be given the opportunity to experience the positive benefits of organized sports”. The guidelines for funding are: • Children aged 6-18 years are eligible to apply for a grant • Grants of a maximum $200 must be used for sport registration fees • Applications must be received prior to/or at the beginning of the requested sport season • Involved in an organized sport with a qualified coach Application for a KidSport™ grants can be obtained at the Chilliwack Parks, Recreation & Culture Department or online at www.chilliwack.com
2011 Chilliwack Community Sport Hero Awards Tuesday, May 3, 2011 Best Western Rainbow Country Inn The Chilliwack Sport Hero Awards honour long-standing volunteers that have contributed countless hours to the development and delivery of sport to our community. These awards recognize and thank community sport volunteers for their dedication and leadership.
Seeking 2011 Nominations Now! Criteria: a) Any individual who makes a voluntary contribution to sport through coaching, officiating, administration, special events, etc. b) Has been or continues to be a dedicated sport volunteer for a minimum of 10 years; and c) Is an unsung hero of sport, going above and beyond the call of duty and deserving of recognition.
