The Salvation Army is in the business of helping others in Langley. But right now, it needs help itself. The annual Kettle Campaign needs more volunteers to hit its goal of raising $400,000 this year for the Gateway of Hope shelter. They need about 500 volunteers who can give a total of about 5,000 hours of service ringing bells and standing with the kettles in front of local stores. If more volunteers can’t be found, the fundraising drive will likely fall short of its goal, said Troy Gaglardi, who is overseeing the campaign. A lack of people is the only problem. Gaglardi said Langleyites are showing their usual generosity when it comes to putting money in the pots. Gateway of Hope provides an ongoing shelter program for Langley’s homeless, as well as meals and a variety of services for those living on the street, or just those in need of some help. While many of its programs are funded through the provincial government, it can offer more if it makes enough money during this campaign, one of the biggest fundraising drives of the year. “It’s wonderful to be able to offer the soup and a bed,” Gaglardi said. “It’s a start, but it’s not a solution.” The Gateway of Hope also offers job training and counselling. It has 25 rooms for long-term residency, for people who have begun to turn their lives around but need a stable foothold. It also runs the emergency cold and wet weather shelters for Langley, a program that has been activated several times already this winter. The Langley RCMP offer rides to the homeless from around the community, and have brought in several people who couldn’t face the cold weather. Gaglardi said there are still some homeless people who prefer to stay outside in the cold, and won’t come to the shelter. But he hopes that a human connection can be made eventually. While help with the kettle campaign is the top priority right now, Gaglardi said the Gateway of Hope could also use some aid in the kitchen on Sundays. Many of the volunteers who help prepare meals are at church on that day.

Mary Polak MLA for Langley
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
At the beginning of this month I was privileged to take part in the CKNW Orphans’ Fund Pledge Day. I was joined on air by Wally Buono and Dennis Skulsky of the BC Lions. Throughout the day sports figures, politicians and community leaders took to the airwaves encouraging donations to support children in need across BC.
Mary shows off her Christmas spirit and pretty festive coat, at the Magic of Christmas parade in Langley.
It was heartening to witness the spirit of giving that is so much a part of our communities. But there was a sad note as well. A new report shows a drop in the number of Canadians who donated to charities last year. Sadly, this has been a trend over the last few years. This year, please take the opportunity to make Christmas brighter for needy families. Make a donation or volunteer some time. I know your own Christmas will be brighter as a result.
Merry Christmas to all! Mary Polak MLA for Langley

Hockey funded
A Langley hockey program that helps young people connect with the police in a positive way got a boost last week. The Langley Crime Prevention Society was handed a cheque for $2,500 from the RCMP Foundation. The money will help fund another year of weekly hockey games. The games are intended to build bridges between the kids, who have often been in trouble with the law or at their schools, and the police. Insp. Richard Konarski and Supt. Derek Cooke presented the cheque on behalf of the foundation. • More online

Website revamped
It isn’t always easy to find simple information on Langley Township’s website. When is garbage picked up? How can I get a burning permit? Will the snow be plowed off my road? Steve Scheepmaker, with the Township’s IT service, said a new website that will launch in the first few months of the new year should make things easier. The new webpage will cut out jargon and will be designed to promote information people are actually looking for to the top of the page. “It’ll sort of bubble up to the top,” Scheepmaker said. The new site’s structure is actually already finished. • More online

A Langley woman in desperate need of major dental care may have found a solution to her problem. Tracey Woods has been offered free services by a Surrey dentist, Dr. Panos Andreou with the Omega Dental Group. However, Woods and her family are now trying to determine if Andreou has access to the facilities needed to perform the delicate work. “Our big concern is whether we can get OR time with this guy,” said Woods’ husband, Scott. He and Tracey planned to talk to Andreou more this week, and the dentist told the Langley Advance he would need to consult with Tracey and her doctors.

Children get glimpse of Christmas past
Old-fashioned Christmas activities have a way of appealing to modern kids. by Heather Colpitts hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com
The timer goes ding on the toaster oven and it’s time for another batch of small gingerbread men cookies to come out. The toaster oven door opens and the room at the Langley Centennial Museum fills with spicy aromas as students watched their small cookies put onto cooling racks. If the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, the way to a student’s mind is through all the senses.
Heather Colpitts/Langley Advance
Claire Jersey, Isabelle Blassnitz, and Adriana Smith found out rolling out cookie dough is not as easy as it looks.
So the museum includes hands-on activities that show students what Christmas was like for children in a bygone era. By the time the season is over, many area children will have taken the Pioneer Christmas program. “We have 900 students attending the Pioneer Christmas Program which only runs for five weeks,” explained Jeff Chenatte, the museum arts and heritage educator. Pioneer Christmas is geared for students in kindergarten and Grade 1, and features lots of opportunity to get their hands going. “The program is run in stations, where children are playing with heritage toys, making Heather Colpitts/Langley Advance and baking gingerAdriana Smith showed how it’s done when she and Langley Township bread men, as well Mayor Rick Green tried stringing popcorn to decorate trees at as making heritage Langley Centennial Museum. RCMP corporal scores big award by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
Cpl. Norm Massie started out just wanting to play basketball and floor hockey with kids, when he began working as a school liaison officer. Two decades later, he has won the RCMP Foundation’s Golden Spur award, in honour of his creation of an annual basketball tournament. Massie, a Langley resident who works with the federal Border Integrity service, was one of the first liaison officers in Surrey. He started playing ball hockey and basketball with students during lunch hours, and brought in other RCMP officers as well. It was a good way to introduce police and teenagers to one another, in a context that didn’t involve traffic tickets or handcuffs. “That was an opportunity we seized to kind of put the police in a new light,” Massie said. The games proved so popular that Massie was inspired to start an annual basketball tournament. He worked with school counsellor Rick Inrig, who’s nickname is “Mr. Basketball.” 204th St.

Now the annual Surrey RCMP High School Basketball Classic involves 24 high schools, with 24 senior teams, 16 junior teams, and takes six days to complete. More than 600 players will take part in 70 games in January in the next incarnation of the tourney. There’s also the popular coaches versus RCMP officers game, held every year before the championship match. “You can imagine how competitive it is, and it’s usually a very close game,” Massie said. The RCMP have even been known to cuff a few players on the other team to give them a small edge. While the games themselves are fun, Massie is most proud of the memorial scholarships handed out every year at the tournament’s close. One is the Const. Roger Pierlet Memorial Scholarship, named after the first RCMP officer killed in Surrey in the line of duty. Pierlet was shot purely because he was an officer, by a man with a grudge against the police. More memorial scholarships are handed out in the names of Ed Schellenberg and Chris Mohan, the two innocent men killed in the Surrey Six slayings. Massie was surprised and pleased that his 20 years of dedication won him the Golden Spur Award from the RCMP

Wrong records being broken There are a few things sadder than a child with an empty stocking on Christmas morning… but not many. This is shaping up to be an empty Christmas for a lot of children in the Langleys. And that means Christmas will also be a cold place to be for their mothers and/or fathers. The continuing recession has taken its toll, as Canada appears to be catching up to the rest of world in failing businesses and rising jobless rates. While some politicians at the federal and provincial levels boast about the country’s economic resilience and cheer about job-creation statistics during those weeks when the numbers rise a bit, the reality is that many of the jobs “created” leave those lucky enough to get them still in poorer shape than when the world economic collapse began at the end of 2008. Even among many of those who have jobs, money is short. And those hardships come home to roost when Christmas rolls around. They show up in the help needed by the Salvation Army, in the growing numbers of families needing help from the Langley Christmas Bureau and the Langley Food Bank, and in the decline in donations available to the volunteers who struggle to meet the needs of the community. The Christmas Bureau volunteers are expecting to break records this year – but the records they expect to break are the ones they’d really like to avoid. As of Monday, they already had a list of 700 families pleading for help to make it through Christmas this year, and that number has been increasing daily. The bureau wraps up its operations on Friday. It would be a nice Christmas present from the community to its volunteers if they could also have a record-breaking year for donations. – B.G.

HST
Complete information needed
We need an independent group of three to five qualified people to assemble all of the pros and cons of the HST, and that information made available to voters. Going to a restaurant and paying HST on a meal is not enough information to vote “no”, and getting a low-income cheque in the mail is not enough to vote “yes”. The way the HST was introduced was a big mistake, and voting it out may be another big mistake. I ask the authorities to do it right and make sure voters understand both sides of the issue, so our decision will be what is best for our province and its people. Eric J. Bysouth, Langley
Overpass
Let Surrey solve its own problems Dear Editor, Why is Langley City putting $8.5 million into the 196th Street project, three overpasses, and roads that will mainly benefit the Surrey industrial area? The same question could be proposed to Langley Township and the money it are putting into the project.
Where is Langley City getting the money? Why are they trying to pass this through council in a hurry, during December, when people are busy with the holiday season? Do the residents of Langley know how much this project is going to cost them in future tax dollars?
Traffic calming
Calming motion overridden
Dear Editor, Township staff overrode a motion, passed by council on Oct. 4, approving Traffic Calming for 201st Street from 74th to 68th Avenues to be completed by September 2011. We purchased our house in Willoughby so we can walk to school with our children. Come and witness the problems on 201st Street on school days, during school hours. Jo Jo Imai, R.C. Garnett Elementary PAC Treasurer [Note: Find more letters on this topic online at www.langleyadvance.com.]
Why was this just recently opened up to the public, even though it’s been years in the planning? Yes, we need rail overpasses – but not these. This project will not help Langley traffic issues. Let Surrey build them, if it thinks it needs them, out of Surrey tax dollars and on Surrey roads. I can think of a lot more constructive ways to use $8.5 million dollars for the people of Langley. Stop by for 10 minutes at the open house on Dec 16, 5-8 p.m., at Nicomekl Elementary School, and leave your opinion there for Council to know that you don’t want them to spend your tax dollars for this project. Dear Editor, The HST debate carries on, and next year we in B.C. will vote “yes” or “no” to decide if we will keep it or cancel it. To do what is right, we must know, in more detail, what our vote will mean. In general, the “no” side has just said no, and has not supported its argument with enough facts for any reasonable person to make an informed decision. The “yes” side, including government, has put out a considerable amount of supporting information, but has not made it available to the majority of citizens. We have to do better than that, or the wrong decision may be made.

Freedom of Information
WikiLeaks will restrict freedoms Since the recent spate of WikiLeaks, we’ve heard of countries forcing servers to limit access to information. There will be more pressure on servers and search engines. Government transparency is also under attack. Freedom of information usually allows access to information at the end of a predetermined period of time. That will change, too. I suspect that when the doors are open, information will not be there at all. Governments will learn to
Township council
Outburst potentially costly
Dear Editor, I attend most Township council meetings. At the Dec. 6 evening meeting, the audience witnessed a very animated outburst by Councillor Charlie Fox [Task force costs divide mayor from council, Dec. 10, Langley Advance]. Indeed, it was something to behold. Perhaps Coun. Fox might consider something to calm him down before attending council meetings. Otherwise he might blow a gasket or something. That, of course, would be his problem, but by-elections are just too darned expensive. T. Braaten, Aldergrove

leave no information at all. Matthew Claxton’s column [Anonymous takes on the world, Dec. 10 Painful Truth, Langley Advance] reveals another startling behaviour: malicious attacks by anonymous hackers on VISA and Mastercard. These attacks are enabled by an entitlement mentality just like that of Julian Assange of WikiLeaks. Certainly, freedom as we know it in 2010 will continue to change, as it has since 2001. More startling is a symptom of a failing civilization, like a snake eating itself, destruction from within, not from Barbarians at the gates. George Orwell really did predict the future in his book Nineteen Eighty-Four. He just got it wrong by 20 years. Brian G. Dear Editor, In the years since 9/11, our freedom to move about the globe has been severely limited. Security is so tight everywhere that now even our private parts are not private at airport security. This is the new freedom. It is a high price to pay. Our access to the internet will be severely limited as the result of WikiLeaks. Google and Microsoft have been cooperating with China in the past few years, to limit Chinese citizens access to information.

Fatal crash
Memorial still making waves after quarter century A visit with her family to a memorial site in Kentucky helped a Langley mom relive some memorable moments from 1985 – and beyond.
“They maintained them beautifully,” Nikkel said. “It was surreal. This was something that was part of an experience I had as a teenager, yet 25 years later the impact is still being felt.” (Nikkel blogged about the experience at janicenikkel.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive. html). With the recent 25th anniversary of the tragedy, Nikkel is sharing her story in an effort to inspire youth with the message that they can make a difference. “It’s a message I share with my four kids all in school here in Langley, and those I come in contact with,” Nikkel said. “I didn’t tell this story for a long time because I didn’t want people to think, ‘Oh, she’s trying to get attention for herself.’ But I really want to inspire, especially to young people, that they can make a difference. Even writing a letter can start a chain going that is beyond anything that you can imagine.” At an early age, Nikkel’s four children were made aware of the story. A life lesson is attached to it: do unto others. “I’ve always challenged them to think of others,” Nikkel said. “Our Christian faith plays a big role in our family. It takes courage to be that kind of person who is not always thinking of yourself.” Planting trees is a tradition in Nikkel’s family, and had been something they’d done in memory of family and friends who’d passed away. When her grandfather and grandmother passed away, the family planted trees in their yard to remember and honour them. When she travelled west in 1988 to attend Trinity Western University, trees once again became part of her story. When six Trinity Western pilots died in a crash in 1991, Nikkel suggested that flowering trees should be planted in their memory. “They make a row of some of the prettiest trees on Trinity’s campus in the spring and fall,” Nikkel said. “Today, we have a cedar tree farm in South Langley. I never imagined I’d be a tree planter for life.”

Then UPI [United Press International] picked up the story and it snowballed from there,” Nikkel said. “It was all over. My neighbours were in Mexico and they were reading about this young girl in Ontario. It was literally global.” Nikkel’s gesture made her a local and national celebrity at the time. She was named Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year, was interviewed by CBC radio and on television, visited with former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney in his office, and even received a telegram from the late President Ronald Reagan. “There was this one year of my life where I was a celebrity, I guess you could call it,” Nikkel said with a laugh. The story took a tangible turn when the late Frank Lockyear, from Portland, Ore., heard about Nikkel on the radio and helped the then-teenaged girl and her family coordinate with the 101st Airborne Division to plant trees in memory of those who lost their lives. A small forest in Kentucky sits eternally silent, but each of its trees has a story to tell, thanks the thoughtfulness of a Langley mom. On Dec. 12, the 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky commemorated the 25th anniversary of the tragedy that took the lives of 248 soldiers and eight crew members, who crashed in Gander, Nfld., on their way home from a peacekeeping mission in the Middle East. South Langley resident Janice Nikkel was 15 years old and living in Oakville, Ont., when the tragedy occurred. At the time, she was preoccupied with the standard list of items important to teenaged girls in the mid-1980s and today: school, sports, friends, and boys. “I didn’t think about it at the time, even though it was big news across Canada,” recalled Nikkel, a 40-year-old married mother of four. That is, until Nikkel’s mom compared the crash to about 10 classrooms at her own high school, imagining each person had had someone die in their family – right before Christmas. “This was what it would have been like for the families of the 101st – all from the same base – right before Christmas,” Nikkel said. Nikkel asked her mom what Canadians were doing to show our support. Her mom didn’t know. That’s where Nikkel’s story begins. She wrote a letter to the Toronto Star newspaper, stating that she’d donate her baby-sitting money to start a living memorial for the soldiers who’d died in Canada. “I didn’t think anything would

Volunteers Unlimited partnered with Toy Traders on Langley Bypass to participate in a Saturday toy drive for the Langley Chrism-
tas Bureau and needy families. Matthew Purdy, owner of Toy Traders, let Volunteers Unlimited set up a donation booth right outside his store. Langley shoppers stopped to by drop off an unwrapped toy or donate cash to the cause. Purdy said he was able to help by letting people buy toys to be donated at wholesale costs. Making Spirits Bright LANGLEY CHRISTMAS BUREAU With your generous support, the Langley Christmas Bureau is able to provide Christmas gifts to nearly 1300 children every year. These children range in age from newborn to teenagers. Without your generosity, they would have nothing to look forward to on Christmas morning. Please drop off your unwrapped gifts or gift cards. Donations will continue to be accepted up until 4 p.m., December 23rd. Although appreciated, please refrain from donating stuffed animals.

busy with its holiday work, it’s struggling to meet demand. Requests for help are up this year and donations are down. As of Monday, there were some 700 families registered and the bureau expects to reach a record-breaking number of requests. The bureau supplies gifts to the children of needy families. It is struggling to meet the need for gifts in the nine to 11 age category for both girls and boys, as well as the 12-15 boys category. But cash contributions allow the bureau to get gifts specific for age and gender. More about the bureau is available by calling 604-530-3001 or by checking out www.langleychristmasbureau.com.

There were dreams of a green Christmas at the Langley Chapters store last week. Debbie Fleming (above), Robin Cooper, and Tess White of Langley Township’s Engineering Division were on hand at the Langley Chapters store on Dec. 7-8 to wrap purchases in free, eco-friendly materials that had been recycled – and could be further recycled again after use. Keeping Christmas Traditions Alive
When Santa Claus goes to check his list (twice), it won’t be difficult to find the children who have been nice. Students from all over Langley School District are donating free time before Christmas to wrap gifts in Willowbrook Shopping Centre. From 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., every day until Dec. 24, students will wrap presents in return for donations for schools. “The response was astonishing,” said Susan Cairns, executive director of Langley School District Foundation. More than 400 students, teachers, parents, and district employees have come forward to commit time. “We’re hoping to raise $20,000, and we’d like to do it every year,” Cairns said. The money is needed for extracurricular programs that have had to be cut back as school boards tighten their budgets. Marinna Delisimunovic, 16, wrapped gifts with three fellow high school students recently.
“We’re hoping to get funding for our school programs, and any events and trips we’ll have,” she said. As the Christmas shopping rush approaches the final week, Cairns expects four times as many volunteers will be needed to keep up with the wrapping demand. Students taking part represent a variety of local schools. All proceeds will be distributed proportionally to the schools that helped out, based on their numbers of volunteer hours. Shoppers can go to the wrapping station and pick the colour and style of the paper and ribbon for their presents. For those who are environmentally conscious, the paper is eco-friendly. The gift-wrapping station is located near the SportChek entrance of Willowbrook, next to the Please Mum store and across from the currency exchange booth. Cairns said volunteers are still welcome, and can contact her or Joanie Proske at 604532-1464.

Express blast past Chiefs on road trip
The Langley Chiefs need to work on their defense following a 4-0 loss. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
The Coquitlam Express lost no time in showing the Langley Chiefs who was in charge during Friday night’s game at the Coquitlam Sports Centre. The Express played their home ice advantage to the hilt, skating off with a 4-0 victory. “The low point was that we lost, and I’m not sure that there
was a high point,” said Chiefs head coach Harvey Smyl. The game began well enough. “I thought we played a decent first period,” Smyl said. However, the only goal of the period went to the Express’s defenceman Jared Eng. It was in the second period that things went south for the Chiefs. “There was some turnovers that cost us dearly,” Smyl said. Just after the 16-minute mark, Garrick Perry put the Express up 2-0. The Chiefs never managed to recover, and Coquitlam added some insurance in the final 20
minutes of the game, with Matt ents, but their major problem Mazzarolo scoring unassisted, was not heading for the goal and Jason Grecia when the Express adding the final was a man down, “The low point point. four wins and a tie in their last 10 outings, they still remain near the top of their Coastal Conference ranking in the BCHL. The Chiefs are second only to Powell River, a team that’s given them, and every other team in the league, plenty of trouble in the past few months. The Chiefs’ next game will be an unusual one, starting at 11 a.m. at the Langley Events Centre. Smyl said the game is designed to be for a luncheon crowd. Tickets for the game are available at the LEC.
