Perfect weather encouraged more spectators to come out for the annual Magic of Christmas Parade Saturday night in Langley City. “Honestly, it was the best parade to date,” said Teri James, head of the Downtown Langley Merchants Association. With draft horses drawing Santa and Mrs. Claus, and more floats and larger crowds than ever before, it all went off without a hitch, James said. She estimated crowds between 203rd and 207th Streets along Fraser Highway were twice as large as last year, with people lined up five-deep in many places. James said a rough head count came up with between 5,000 and 6,000 people. There were 47 parade entries this year, about half a dozen more than the previous best year. Because of the cool, dry weather, those entries could include a pipe band and several equestrian groups. In previous years, cold, wind, rain, or even snow has kept horses and pipers from participating. The colourful floats and entries in the parade were varied, including local businesses, horses, children, sports groups, and even jugglers. Live music began between 5 and 6 p.m. at several locations along the parade route, serving to help indicate that people could spread out, rather than all clustering on the one-way section of Fraser Highway, as they have in past years. The planners of this year’s parade have been working since August to get everything organized, James said. Now they’ll have a short break. Many of them also work to plan the annual Community Day Parade in the summer. Planning for that will start early in the New Year.

A 35-year-old woman is in police custody, her 34-year-old boyfriend in hospital
in serious condition after a stabbing in Aldergrove Saturday. At about 10:30 p.m., the Langley RCMP was called out to help paramedics with an injured man in the 27000 block of 29th Avenue. Officers found that the man had been stabbed. The victim was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. The woman was also injured, but she was treated at the scene and then taken into
custody at the local RCMP headquarters. No charges have yet been laid, said Cpl. Holly Marks, spokesperson for the Langley RCMP. The incident is being investigated by the Serious Crime unit and is considered a domestic violence incident, Marks said. The victim is now in stable condition in hospital. Marks couldn’t say if the couple was known to police before this incident.
