Transit
Budget deadline extended for TransLink A deadline extension gives TransLink time to talk about more funding options. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
There will be more time for Lower Mainland mayors to come up with a funding solution for TransLink. Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender, head of the mayors’ council that oversees funding
for the transit authority, said an extension until the spring has been granted by the provincial government. The mayors’ council had been facing the prospect of a Dec. 9 vote on whether or not to boost property taxes in 2012. A higher tax rate would have paid for TransLink’s Moving Forward plan, which includes the Evergreen Line SkyTrain extension, the North Fraser Perimeter Road, and a number of major new bus routes. However, the property tax plan
was highly unpopular with most regional mayors, and the vote was headed for a likely defeat. Fassbender said the change gives the mayors more time to discuss the problem with the provincial government. Fassbender has always said that the property tax increase was a “backstop” measure. “I think we need to look at carbon taxes, and what the philosophy of carbon tax is,” Fassbender said. Other possible funding sources are reallocating federal gas tax
revenues, and even tolls and road pricing. Fassbender pointed out that currently it’s the Fraser River that is to have all the tolled crossings. Finally, if a vehicle levy is an option, the mayors council will have time to look at how it is structured, Fassbender said. The vehicle levy idea was scrapped for consideration earlier this fall because of the looming deadline. The new deadline aims for a spring agreement.

Mountie nabs same car twice
A prohibited driver had two run-ins with the same Langley Mountie in just three days.
by Matthew Claxton
mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
It must have seemed like a nightmare come true for a prohibited driver nabbed twice in one week by an alert RCMP officer in Aldergrove. On Nov. 21, the Langley Mountie pulled over a vehicle in the 5900 block of 268th Street, said Cpl. Holly Marks. The car looked similar to one that was associated with a suspected criminal. It turned out to be unrelated, but the officer did discover that the driver was not supposed to be driving.
The officer served the driver with a notice of driving prohibition, Marks said. The driver left the parked vehicle behind. Three days later and a few blocks away, in the 26500 block of 56th Avenue, the same officer spotted the same driver in the same car. The Mountie turned on his sirens and lights, and the suspect apparently panicked. The driver tried to speed away, and promptly drove off the road. He then tried to make a run for it, but a police dog tracked him down and found him hiding nearby. A 43-year-old local man faces criminal charges. TELUS AUTHORIZED DEALERS Vancouver

Violence against women
Vigil remembers victims Thursday afternoon was a time of reflection at McBurney Lane. by Troy Landreville
tlandreville@langleyadvance.com
By late afternoon Thursday, snowturned to freezing rain in Langley – but it didn’t stop more than a dozen people, including Langley’s mayors and MLAs from taking a stand against those who use violence against women. Women and men gather at McBurney Lane for a candlelight vigil every Nov. 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Murrayville
Public invited under mistletoe
The day dates back to 1960, when the Mirabal sisters, activists from the Dominican Republic, were violently assassinated for their political efforts. As darkness took hold, several people spoke on the subject, including Dorothy McKim, executive director of Ishtar Transition Housing Society, Fort LangleyAldergrove MLA Rich Coleman, Langley MLA Mary Polak, Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender, Langley Township Mayor Rick Green, and Diane Warawa, representing Langley MP Mark Warawa. Near the end of the vigil, those who attended partook in a moment of silence to remember and honour victims of violence.
A special guest will attend Under the Mistletoe, the 10th annual holiday concert at Sharon United Church this Friday evening. And people will have a chance to have photos with a certain gent in red. Admission for the special evening is by donation. The show starts 7 p.m. in the church at 21452 Old Yale Rd. The concert is a chance to relax, enjoy an evening of holiday entertainment, and sing along to beloved Christmas carols and songs. The concert is followed by refreshments and the special guest. A pair of burglaries last week in Walnut Grove is under investigation by the local police. On Nov. 23, someone kicked in the door to a basement suite between 3 and 6 p.m., said Cpl. Holly Marks, spokesperson for the Langley RCMP. A TV, video game console, computer, and CDs were taken, Marks said. The suite had been ransacked, with items strewn everywhere. The next day, between 5 and 6:30 p.m., another home was broken into, this time through a rear window. Computers, a camera, and jewelry were taken. Once again, belongings were strewn about in several rooms of the house by the thief. Marks said police are urging residents to look at their home security.
It’s not necessarily a matter of having an alarm, but of basic things such as using a solid core door made of wood or metal. Glass in doors should be unbreakable. Screws holding hinges and striker plates should be 3” deep, and namebrand dead bolts should be used. “Anti-lift” devices like dowels or bars on sliding doors and windows can be helpful at preventing easy break ins. Never open your door to strangers, and install an oversized door viewer, Marks said. Don’t leave your automatic garage door opener in your car, and lock the door from your garage into your home. Finally, police suggest getting to know your neighbours. Join BlockWatch or a Crime Free Multi-Housing group. Anyone who can help solve the two Walnut Grove burglaries can call the Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200.

Drive for warm clothes kicks into high gear The blanket drive run by local realtors is now in full swing. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
The Realtors Care Blanket Drive has officially started up, and local real estate agents are now collecting warm clothes for the homeless and
disadvantaged. Langley realtors are collecting for both the Langley Food Bank & Free Store, and for the Gateway of Hope shelter. The two charities are looking for winter coats, hoodies, sweaters, long-sleeved shirts, pants, blankets, sleeping bags, scarves, and gloves. On average, more than 4,000 bags of gently used or new items have
been donated in past years. There are almost a dozen dropoff sites at various real estate offices around Langley, including in Aldergrove, Walnut Grove, and in Cloverdale. Chiefs deserve fans’ support There are countless local hockey fans, as well as those who are simply enthusiastic about community sports, who have been missing out on a fun night at the Langley Events Centre. The Langley Chiefs need bums – we’re talking the posterior variety, here – to fill seats at their hockey games. Langley’s British Columbia Hockey League team has averaged 1,549 fans at each of their 14 home games so far this season. On the surface, the number seem impressive, and places the Chiefs at the top of the BCHL home attendance heap among Coastal Conference teams. However, the LEC’s arena seats a capacity of up to 4,500. Recently, the players – who range from 16 to 20 years of age – and their coaches have been looking up at a swath of blue seats during play stoppages and intermissions. Chiefs hockey is cheap entertainment that’s geared for the entire family. Single game ticket prices are $13 for adults and seniors, and a paltry $9 for children and students. And, unlike games and events held in downtown Vancouver, there’s plenty of free parking available. On Saturday, a recorded attendance of 1,350 – more than 4,000 under capacity – watched the Chiefs fall 5-3 to the visiting Victoria Grizzlies. The crowd was even smaller Friday, as the Chiefs trounced the Surrey Eagles 5-1 in front of just 1,035 fans. When you consider the population of the two Langleys combined is about 130,000, and that local rinks are teeming with minor- and recreational-league hockey players each and every weekend, it’s obvious this community can do a better job of supporting its junior A team. When they’re not out on the ice giving 100 per cent, the Chiefs’ players are in the community, meeting fans, and influencing young lives in a positive manner. They deserve our support. – T.L.

Fort Langley
Santa great, tree lights a bust I attended the Christmas event put on by the Fort Langley Business Improvement Association, at which Santa came to Fort Langley by canoe. I was so excited to see that this was going to be happening. For years, I have watched Christmas movies being filmed here in the Fort with a large
decorated tree out front of the Community Hall. I have always thought that it should be a tradition and a community-building event here in the real world as well. So when I read that Santa would be arriving by canoe, and then carollers would be leading the public to the community hall for the tree-lighting,
Fort Langley
Tree lightly darkly confusing Dear Editor,
Were you in Fort Langley to watch Santa Claus being brought to shore by the canoe club? Did you go to the community hall to see the big Christmas tree being lit? My visitor came from Abbotsford to take in the festive event. We walked to the hall: no tree, no lights, no Christmas effects there! Back to the train station, where a huge tree was barely visible with three strings of lights! There were many families with small children, everybody looking for some event. We never made it down to the river. I do not know whether anything transpired when Santa came in. We just met all kinds of people shaking their heads, asking questions. There seems to have been some major confusion with the crowds on the sidewalk between the hall and the train station.
Barbara Boldt, Fort Langley
I was so excited that I emailed everyone I know in the area and told them to come out. Well, my kids were thrilled with Santa’s arrival, and we then followed Santa to – the Railway station. No carols, not at the community hall. We were told that everyone needed to come up top, on the road, and not be down in the field beside the railway station. We then were asked to do a countdown from 10 for the lighting of the tree – four thin stripes of LED lights that you could barely see, and only on one side of the tree (thus the reason for having everyone come up top). What a huge letdown. People started laughing and leaving. What happened to the old saying: if you are going to do it, do it right? Really, there was no point in having a treelighting at all. I will not attend again next year, should they decide to do it again.

FAMILY EVENT
Bus benches promoting adoption Dear Editor,
We have a number of friends here in Langley who would love to adopt, but have had to wait for a child, sometimes for years. Many men and women who feel unable to care for their child are frightened by the prospect of adoption. They see it as “giving up” their child to complete strangers. They don’t realize how much support there is out there for birth parents, for the babies and children, and for the adoptive parents.
TODAY’S FLYERS... in the Call 604-856-7733 for delivery info.
We want to encourage everyone to see adoption as the loving option. To that end, the Langley Pro-Life Society is sponsoring a number of bus benches that are aimed at drawing attention to the group’s new website, www.adoptionincanada.ca. Let’s change the face of adoption.
Jaclyn Penninga, Langley Pro-Life Society

plans during a CBC-TV panel’s climate debate last week. Alas, the Conservatives chose to send Baird’s other right hand man, Tom Lewinsky of Saskatchewan, who said the lack of action on the environment is the fault of the Liberals. That is when I turned to the recent mailer from Mark that trumpets the government’s economic gains. Front and back, only the economy. No word on the environment or Cancun leading to Durban or the delicate balance of Canada’s economy and the planet’s ecology. When Langley is represented by an MP that even his boss laughs at, those of us who have a consuming interest in the state of the environment can only weep at opportunities lost.

Langley MP Mark Warawa was featured in a lighthearted look at Parliament in Maclean’s magazine, Nov. 22. It appears that his sometimes boss John Baird featured Mark in his play of the week during the Conservative caucus meeting. By Baird’s count, Mark said “Mr. Speaker” 10 times in the first tape he played, and repeated “Mr. Speaker” 10 times in the second. Given that Mark has just 35 seconds each time he stands up in question period, he must be hard pressed to get a word in edgeways about the environment, since he is the parliamentary secretary to whomever handles that portfolio. With the Cancun Environment 2010 conference in session this week and next, we might have expected that Mark would seize the opportunity to lay out his boss’s

Windshield smashed by flying metal
by John Colebourn Postmedia Network Inc.
University student Greg Fleming knows how close he came to being a roadside statistic after a four-kilogram piece of metal crashed through his car windshield in South Langley. Fleming, 21, of Surrey was driving east along 16th Avenue, near 224th Street, heading to his girlfriend’s house Tuesday evening when the piece of metal smashed through his windshield with such force that it went out the back window and into the ditch. Fleming, a first-year student at the University of the Fraser Valley, shudders when he thinks of his brush with death.
“It was a huge noise – like an explosion – when it went through my windshield,” Fleming said. “The metal went through my windshield, hit my dash, blew out my DVD navigation system and out through the back seat and through the back windshield,” he said. “I was covered in glass. It was unbelievable. I was freaked right out.” Fleming was wearing glasses and feels he is fortunate his eyes were not damaged. He had a few minor cuts on his face from the glass but was not hospitalized. “The police officer couldn’t believe what happened,” he said. “He said there was a lot of force through the windshield and if I had been hit in the head, I would have died or been decapitated. “I’m lucky to be alive.” Fleming believes he was travelling about 60 km/h. It is estimated the metal came within about 12 centi-
metres of striking his head. “I’m still having nightmares over that,” he said. He believes the metal came from an approaching dump truck. Kelly took it to a truckers’ garage and was told it was a broken piece from a U-joint, a drivetrain part used when additional traction is needed. He figures the part fell off the truck as it moved along 16th Avenue. Langley RCMP Sgt. Ravi Pawar said he has never heard of any accident quite like this one. “He is very lucky,” said Pawar. “That piece of metal was sharp enough to decapitate a person.” He said there have been no witnesses to the accident. If found, the truck driver could face a violation under the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Act for having an unsecured part fall off the truck.

Final days of fall Shortly before a blanket of snow covered much of Langley for a short spell, a horse took advantage of the typical late fall conditions to graze on a property in the Derby Reach area. The snow has been melting away, and forecasters predict the usual rainy late-November/ early December conditions over the next few days. Troy Landreville Langley Advance

Chiefs win one, lose one
Langley Chiefs winger Matt Ius slid the puck towards the Victoria Grizzlies crease, while Victoria goaltender Matt Ginn went down to defend during Saturday’s British Columbia Hockey League game at the Langley Events Centre. The Grizzlies defeated the Chiefs 5-3.

The hosts scored three times in the second period and tacked on two more markers in the final frame to win by four goals. Gerling scored twice, including the winner in the second period, to lead his team to victory. Kit Sitterley, Tim Daly, and Strahle had the other goals for the Chiefs, who went 2-5 on the powerplay. Daly, the Chiefs’ top-scoring defenceman, added an assist for a two-point night. The Chiefs scored twice during a five-minute man advan-

Jones went to the aid of his goaltender Karel St.-Laurent, who was run into by McBride The aftermath of Jones’s altercation with McBride – who was assessed a minor penalty for goaltender interference and a game misconduct on the play – was powerplay goals from Gerling and Daly. Chiefs goalie Cole Huggins shut out the Eagles over the final 40 minutes of play to earn third star of the game honours.
The Chiefs, 18-10-1-4, remain in second place in the BCHL’s Coastal Conference. They are four points up on the Grizzlies, who have four games at hand. The divide between the Chiefs and the first-place Powell River Kings is pretty wide – the Kings hold an eight-point cushion. The Chiefs are back in action Thursday, when they visit Weyerhaeuser Arena to play the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. The next day (Friday) they are at Powell River’s Hap Parker Arena to face the Kings. They return to the LEC Sunday for a matinée (3 p.m.) game versus the Nanaimo Clippers.

Thunder announce new head coach for 2011 WLA campaign
Rod Jensen has loads of lacrosse experience as both a player and a veteran coach.
There will be a new leader guiding the Langley Thunder this coming season. On Saturday, the Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) team named Rod Jensen as its new head coach. Jensen has some experienced shoes to fill, as he replaces Randy Delmonico.
Delmonico was the Thunder’s head coach for the 2009 and 2010 campaigns, and, in his first year with the club, guided the Thunder to their first playoff appearance in their existence in Langley. For his part, Jensen has strong credentials. Most recently, he helped the Coquitlam Junior Adanacs win their firstever Minto Cup (Canadian championship for junior A lacrosse). Jensen also worked last winter as defensive coach with the Calgary Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse
League (NLL). It’s a position he is unable to fulfill this season for family reasons. Jensen’s coaching experience includes: • He was the head coach of Coquitlam Adanacs from 2005 to ’07, qualifying for the WLA playoffs each year along with Mann Cup appearance in ’07. • He won BCLA Coach of the Year in ’07 • He was the first head coach of Delta Islanders of the BC Junior A Lacrosse League in 2003 and ’04, winning coach of the year in ’03.
• Jensen was offensive coordinator of Vancouver Ravens (NLL) from 2002 to ’04. • He served as head coach of the Colorado Mammoth (NLL) in 2002. • He was the (WLA) North Shore Indians’ head coach in 1998 and ’99. As a player Jensen played all his minor and junior lacrosse in Richmond. Drafted in the first round of the 1984 WLA draft by the Vancouver Burrards, Jensen was a perennial all-star and top scorer.

The Langley Olympians Swim Club (LOSC) excelled in familiar waters earlier this month. The Olympians hosted their fourth annual short course (25-metre pool) invitational meet at Walnut Grove Pool. The meet drew more than 200 swimmers from across the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. LOSC came away from the meet with the majority of its athletes making finals. Three LOSC athletes set club records with Justin Schramm, 12, achieving his Age Group National Qualifying time in the 200m butterfly, in addition to the club record for this event, 2:31.57. LOSC records were also broken by Hillary Metcalfe, 12, in the 50m freestyle (28.52), 400m freestyle (4:45.77) and 400m individual medley (5:18.00). Eight-year-old Josh Kim got his name on the record board by setting a grand total of six club records. He set records in the 100m freestyle (1:28.38), 200m freestyle (3:16.70), 50m backstroke (46.81), 100m backstroke (1:39.32), 50m breaststroke (54.44), 100m breast-
stroke (1:55.88), and 200m IM (3:43.32). Renae Ledoux, 11, got her first AAA provincial qualifying time in the 200m breaststroke. LOSC placings were as follows:

TRUTH IN ''EMPLOYMENT'' ADVERTISING Postmedia Community Publishing makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711, Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
