House burned
Langley Township firefighters were called out on Remembrance Day to deal with a fire in the Brookswood area. The fire began just before 7 p.m. in the basement of a home in the 19700 block of 41A Avenue, said assistant chief Bruce Ferguson. Firefighters from three halls spent about three hours ensuring it was extinguished. • More online

Local volunteers are using their long memories to fill in gaps in Langley’s history.
by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
The photo shows a number of prominent Langley residents carrying a flower-draped coffin. The names of the pallbearers were written on the back of the photo, so identifying them was no problem. There’s just one issue. “We still don’t know whose funeral it is,” said Lisa Edwards, who is cataloguing a series of photos for Langley Centennial Museum. Earlier this year, the museum was given a large box of unsorted Langley Advance photos, most dating from the 1950s and 1960s. The photos included those taken by Advance photographers, and others submitted by people inside and outside of the community. There are photos of car accidents, of buildings under construction, of May Day events, and of a great many meetings attended by men in suits. To sort out the many mysteries represented by almost 1,000 photos, Edwards has assembled a team of half a dozen volunteers. The history photos group meets once a week, armed with magnifying glasses, and pores over the pictures. “It’s a lot like a puzzle,” Edwards said. In many cases, as with the funeral, the volunteers can

Without the news story or notes that originally went with the photo, there’s no context. A photo the volunteers went over earlier this month, for instance, showed a group of people cutting a cake. Icing on the cake reads, “From all of…” and the rest of the writing is obscured by an arm. Who was the recipient of the mystery cake? Another photo shows a building under construction. Is it a school? A government building? A community centre?
Another image shows a large military jet, without wings, being towed through downtown Langley. Doris Blair, Fay Morelli, Ellen Worrell, Betty Cox, and Alice Johnson are among the key members of the team. As they sit down to sort through a pile of photos, they prompt one another’s memories, bringing up details about a Langley half a century gone. “He married a girl I worked at the bank with,” one comments, singling out the subject of one photo. Others recall babysitting for a particular family, or attend-
ing Sunday school with their children, or the dirt floor of one man’s home. Worrell said she does the job because it’s a challenge, because it’s fun, and because it’s important for history. “And it’s good for the brain, isn’t it?” she said. “I think it’s important that we keep track of what’s happened in the past,” Johnson said. Edwards said the group has spent about 62 hours this year sorting and identifying photos. They have made their way through more than 500 of the package, and have about 300 more to go.

Rally will challenge government to do better A new local group is inviting the public to a rally on disability rights.
by Heather Colpitts hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com
A local disability rights advocate is hosting a public rally Nov. 20. Zosia Ettenberg, with the Langley PosAbilities Society, has announced the event and the creation of a new non-profit society
dubbed Civil Rights Now!, a non-partisan gathering for those who feel “the way the government of B.C. delivers services to people with disabilities strips them of their freedom and dignity,” Ettenberg said. The rally is open to everyone and will take place 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Langley Seniors Resource Centre, 20605 51B Ave. Ettenberg said people with disabilities and their families need the government to be willing to tailor services to the individual’s needs, equality provisions of the
Charter of Rights to have some teeth, and the ability for people with disabilities to have government-funded test cases of civil rights violations. “Civil Rights Now! is organizing a campaign to persuade the provincial Liberals and NDP to make a commitment that if they win the next election they will put these three ideas into action,” she said. People interested in attending the rally are asked to RSVP to pos-abilities@telus. net or call 604-961-0117.

Elks celebrate A local service club reaches its 75th anniversary.
William Lion McKenzie King had just been elected prime minister and people could pick up a gallon of gas for about 10 cents. The world didn’t know it yet but 1935 was half way through a decade-long Depression. In the midst of this difficult time came a group of Langley men who decided to start something no one at the time knew would be still vibrant in 2010. The Langley Elks Club was created on Oct. 21, 1935. At its start, the Elks Lodge 259 was an all-male fraternal charitable organization. From the start, there has been an emphasis on helping the community but what has changed is the structure over the past 75 years. Women are now members. And in the 1960, the Elks focused on children and families. The Elks Lodge celebrated its 75th anniversary with a gathering Nov. 13. The special guest was Dave Hurley, the national leader of the Elks of Canada. “Obviously, after 75 years Langley has a rich history as a lodge, and it is made possible by the past members and the members who make up the lodge today,” Hurley told the Langley Advance. The local Elks started out meeting in various locations before buying the old YMCA/YWCA property on Old Yale Road in 1985. In 2009, the group sold the site to the Harvest Baptist Church and purchased a strip mall in Brookswood, where it occupies some of the space. The focus of the Elks, and its related organization the Order of the Royal Purple, remains on helping others. The Elks Recreational Children’s Camp Society of BC presently operates four camps for children at no cost to families. About 30 years ago the Elks started the BC Family Hearing Resource Centre to help deaf and hard of hearing children to age five and their families. The local Elks also provide scholarships. People may not realize that the local chapter is also involved in making sure the community has fun, having supported Canada Day, the International Festival, Christmas in Williams Park and the Abbotsford Air Show, Langley Days Parade, Langley Good Times Cruise In, and the Community Children’s Christmas Party. The group meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in Unit 6 4044 200B St. People wanting more information can contact langleyelks@ gmail.com. Hurley noted that the Elks, like all service organizations, is always looking for members. Society has changed since many of these groups were created. “People don’t seem to have the time to commit to service organizations as we did years ago,” he noted. But he’s optimistic about the future of the organization because of the commitment of the members like those in Langley. “I’m positive we will be around to service the communities we live in for many years to come,” Hurley said.

A Langley man has devoted countless hours to creating jewelry from scratch. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
It was just intended to be a day in the great outdoors with the kids. For Ron Vauthrin, a few hikes in the late 1970s has turned into a lifelong passion. Vauthrin is one of the long-standing members of the Fraser Valley Rock and Gem Club, and a member of the Creative Jewelry Club based in Richmond. He’s spent much of the past 30 years shaping stones and setting them in silver. His interest began when he and his wife Sue were living in Castlegar. They started going on weekend trips with the local geology club, picking up rocks. Ron quickly moved through the stages of a rock hound – from finding and identifying the rocks, to cutting and polishing, to crafting rings, necklaces and pins. Within a few years he was silversmithing, and when he and his family moved to Langley in 1983, they sought out the local rock clubs to continue their hobby. A rock hound’s work begins on a hike. Many locals go off to Harrison Hot Springs to find suitable rocks, including fossil shellfish and ammonites, Ron said. Others scour the banks of the Fraser River for elusive and rare pieces of jade. Once the rough rocks are brought back home, they have to be cut and polished. A small workshop equipped with power saws and polishers in Aldergrove serves as the base of operations for club members. Once a saw slices off a good section of the rock, the piece is attached with sealing wax to a stick, and is then ground against a series of polishing wheels. This can be the trickiest part of the hobby. “Some rocks don’t polish,” he said, and jade and other stones can by tricky to smooth out. Then there’s the danger of the machinery itself. Ron knows of people who have slipped and lost fingernails. While he has never done that, he admits to having ground away a bit of skin once in a while. A piece of rock can be ground down to a specific size and set in pre-made jewelry settings, or a craftsman can make his own. Largely self-taught, he has passed along his skills to others in the hobby since the early 1990s. Ron and Sue took their kids with them on many of their early rockhound trips, and they now take their grandkids along. Ron is still excited to introduce others to the hobby. The Fraser Valley Rock and Gem Club meets the second Friday of the month at Aldergrove’s Old Age Pensioner’s Organization hall, at 7:30 p.m.

Over the past 21 years, the Rotary Club of Langley Central has hosted a celebration designed for sniffers, swirlers, sippers, swishers, and occasionally, spitters. After hours on Saturday, Nov. 6, the Willowbrook Shopping Centre opened its doors to oenophiles (wine lovers) during the 21st annual Fraser Valley Wine Tasting Festival. The final tally is not in yet, but festival co-chair John Morgan said they know the event raised in excess of $40,000, including a $15,000 contribution from BDO Dunwoody. “We had absolutely glowing reports from those there,” he added. Rotarian Wayne Crossen called the fundraiser a “huge success.” “I think it went very well,” Crossen said. “I talked to a number of people and they were all very pleased with the quality of the wine and food and the general ambience. Most are putting us on their list to come back next year.” Crossen said attendance was slightly lower than expected this year, and believed stricter impaired driving laws recently implemented in B.C., as well as the HST, had to do with keeping a few folks away from the festival. He was, however, impressed with

A Langley company is trying to come to the rescue of those who can’t come up with date ideas beyond dinner and a movie. Joey Peters and Jason Ballard’s Blue Door Apps has just created DateBank, available for the iPhone. Ballard, who has been married for a year and a half, said he always wanted to come up with interesting ideas for new dates with his wife.
already created. As a married man with three kids, Bateman said, it’s been a while since he thought about going on a first date. “I had to think waaaaayyyy back,” he said. But his wife was a big asset, as she could give the thumbs up or down to his ideas. Some of the suggested dates include a tea party for two, baking up some goodies at home, or heading out to geocache. Ballard and Peters plan on creating a number of apps, both for themselves and others. The global reach of the Apple app store means it’s full of potential, Ballard said.

The idea for DateBank was one of a large number he brainstormed with Peters when they decided to break into the world of mobile apps. Working with a programmer, they created a system that allows users to pick the style, budget, and time of day for a date. It then spits out a variety of options, along with descriptions of what’s needed, and tips for making things go smoothly. The 99 cent app so far has a fivestar approval rating from its buyers. “All the feedback has been extremely positive,” Ballard said. The pair tapped Langley Township Councillor Jordan Bateman to do the writing for the entries, and he added a few ideas to the 100-plus they had

Langley City residents don’t want smaller lots, a sentiment made clear at four recent public meetings. In light of the public disapproval of the idea, City staff are recommending City council leave things as they are, and not change the rules to allow smaller lots within neighbourhoods south of the Nikomekl River. The City-commissioned report on public sentiment came up at the Nov. 15 council meeting detailing the views expressed at the public meetings as well as through the online survey and in letters submitted to the municipality. City council was expected to review the report and debate the issue at Monday’s meeting, the results of which were not available before press time.

Try out stone cold sobriety
Rich Coleman’s remarks about the new drinking and driving rules are not helping drivers, pub owners, or police. The MLA for Fort Langley-Aldergrove said people have “misinterpreted” the rules to mean that they can’t have a drink at all and get behind the wheel. But hasn’t that been the message of the government, police, ICBC, and MADD for years? The days when it was considered normal to have a drink, or two, or six, and weave your way home are long gone. The tough new rules only changed the penalties for hitting various stages of drunk driving, including longer driving suspensions for those who were caught with more than .05 blood alcohol content. It has long been considered dangerous to have that much booze in your system. The problem with people who drink and drive is often that they either play down how much they’ve had to drink, or that they believe they “can hold their liquor.” Coleman is the top cop for a government that has promised it will be tough on crime. For him to suggest that cops are being too harsh with legislation that his own government introduced is strange. If people are too afraid now to have one or two drinks with dinner, good. If the new rules cause more people to take a cab, or assign a designated driver, that will undoubtedly save lives. As for bar and restaurant owners losing money – tough. Our society has been moving towards a saner appreciation of the dangers of drunk driving for more than half a century. If that costs bars a few bucks, it’s nothing compared to the human lives that could be saved. Ask any Mounties who have pulled over drunks, or who have cleaned up after a fatal alcohol-fueled crash, whether they prefer drivers to have one or two drinks, or none before hitting the road. – M.C.

Remebrance Day
Fort commitment continues
Dear Editor, Remembrance Day services have been held on and off at the Fort Langley cenotaph since the dedication of the monument in 1920. This year’s high level of attendance is a clear indica-
tion of residents’ continuing commitment to remembering the tens of thousands of Canadian servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives to preserve our freedom. The Fort Langley service
Remembrance Day
Fort’s service moving
Dear Editor, I have attended many Remembrance Day services in Langley. The most memorable one will be the ceremony I viewed in Fort Langley this year. It was fortuitous that I attended, but the reason was compelling: my friend Don, an ex-member of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, was meeting another Patricia who had recently returned from Afghanistan. When we met, we represented three generations of the regiment. The service was magnificently orchestrated, with throngs of onlookers enjoying the ceremony. The sound was brilliantly audible to all, as it carried the well crafted messages of remembering, bracketed by the outstanding singing of soloist Cole Armour and the piping of Carl Hampson. The Fort Langley Remembrance Day Committee, all the participants, and sponsors are to be warmly congratulated for creating a most memorable day. Not to be forgotten, either, are those wonderful airmen who have entertained us all for so many years. Well done! Mike Harvey, Langley
was a highly moving one, with much of the credit due to the efforts of the community’s youth: an 11year-old soloist, a choir of teenaged students, and dozens of members of North Langley’s Scouting and Guiding movements. The enthusiastic and caring participation of these young people is a clear indication that the torch of remembrance continues to be passed between the generations and instils considerable hope for our collective future. We would like to thank the Advance for building public awareness of this season of remembrance. We would also like to acknowledge the financial contributions and volunteer effort of community members and local organizations. The event would not have been possible without their kind assistance. Democracy gone awry
Dear Editor, Bob Moats [Simple concept hard to grasp, Nov. 12 Letters, Langley Advance] needs to go back and read the correct definition of democracy. Langley Township electors have had the privilege every three years to elect our councillors, and that includes the six with whom Mr. Moats seems to disagree. We have never had the opportunity to elect any Agricultural Land Commission member. To allow two unelected individuals to override six elected councillors is very undemocratic. Mr. Moats seems more interested in name-calling than he is in supporting our democracy. Hopefully, democracy will win and our elected officials will do their job. They are the ones we elected to make tough decisions. B. Penner, Langley Township

The result decides the standing of each country. Another report is the Corruption Index, which rates countries as to corruption in government, business, and industry. In this report, Canada is in the top 10 countries. The report clearly relates to the Economic Freedom report, as the same countries are at the top in both. The top 10 countries, from the top down, are Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Switzerland, Chile, United States, Canada, Australia, Mauritius, and the United Kingdom. The worst 10 countries from the bottom up are Zimbabwe, Myanmar, Angola, Venezuela, Congo Republic, Central African Republic, Guinea-Bissau, Burundi, Congo Democratic Republic, and Algeria. Before the current federal government was elected, Canada was in 13th place, so it is obvious things have improved, but we could still do better. With our people, resources, land area, education, and climate, there is no reason why we should not be number one. Let us all work to ensure we stay on track to eventually be number one. Dear Editor, With all the good and bad news about our federal government and Canada in general, it is difficult for most people to decide where Canada actually stands in relation to other countries, and if our country is doing a good or bad job as a democracy. Funds sought for holidays
The Langley Christmas Bureau is bracing for increased need this holiday season. by Heather Colpitts
hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com
Take one look outside and it’s easy to see that fundraising in this kind of blustery wet weather takes real commitment. So when the Langley Lions Club shows up at the Langley Christmas Bureau with a cheque for $9,753.67, the volunteers at the bureau know it’s money hardearned. Club president Irene Stokes explained that the members are helped in their fundraising by the Langley Leos Club (the group for younger members), the Fort Langley Lions, the Think Referrals Business Network, and friends and relatives. They were out during the 2009 holiday season accepting donations in Lions kettles, the results of which were donated at the bureau’s open house last week. There will be fundraisers out

Blackberries uprooted to save local orchards Volunteers hacked at invasive weeds and rescued long-forgotten apple trees. by Matthew Claxton
mclaxton@langeyadvance.com
photo contributed
From left to right, Jeremy Smith, Jillian Stewart, and Cheryl MacIntosh of the Derby Reach Brae Island Park Association hacked away at weeds on Nov. 9.
Members of the Derby Reach Brae Island Park Association pulled on their boots and gloves last week to tackle the scourge of blackberries. Volunteers took part in a Blackberry Pull, one which had nothing to do with cellphones and everything to do with protecting the environment. According to Lisa Dreves of the Langley Environmental Partners Society, the group hauled out five truck loads of Himalayan and cutleaf
blackberry on Nov. 9. The purpose of the pull was to free trees that had been slowly overwhelmed by the blackberry bushes over many years. Foreign varieties of blackberry are an invasive species, one that can easily overwhelm and destroy just about any native vegetation in the Lower Mainland. Only dense shade can halt the blackberry’s spread. The team that took out the vines had a great time, Dreves said. Not only did they free a number of native trees that were being overwhelmed, they found an ancient apple tree. Many old orchards and single apple trees can still be found around rural Langley, dating back to the days when
the area was first settled by Europeans in the midto late-19th century. The hacked up blackberry vines were hauled out by Metro Vancouver Parks, which has partnered with the club to help preserve the park’s natural ecosystems. The attack on the blackberry bushes was just one of the Derby Reach association’s recent efforts. Earlier this year they held an ivy pull to go after another invasive plant that can strangle native trees. Like ivy, blackberries and other invasive species are often brought to Canada as ornamental plants. They either spread from backyards into parks slowly, or irresponsible gardeners dump their cuttings and compost into parklands, letting them take root.

Golden Ears Bridge
Sealant removes crack concerns
Cracks have appeared in the bridge from Langley to Maple Ridge. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com.
Cracks in the Golden Ears Bridge are not unexpected, and are being sealed as they appear, mostly at on-ramps and off-ramps.

Cracks in the Golden Ears Bridge are nothing to worry about – in fact, TransLink says they were anticipated when the bridge was being built. Networks of cracks on several sections of the bridge, particularly near the off-ramps and on-ramps, has developed over the past several months. The cracks have all been filled with a sealant and aren’t developing into anything larger, TransLink staff have reported. The cause of the cracks, according to TransLink spokesperson Drew Snider, was the temperature when some sections of concrete were being poured. Because it was warm then, builders knew the concrete would change shape and crack later. Golden Crossing, the company that built and maintains the bridge, is responsible for sealing up the cracks as they appear.

• Education Minister Weir offered to allow Langley to elect a new school board, provided none of the trustees whom he had fired from the previous board, the result of a labour dispute with teachers, were re-elected. A public meeting decided that it was against a “franchise with strings attached.”
• Three young men were charged with drug trafficking in Langley, as part of a police raid that netted 42 Fraser Valley suspects. The arrests were believed connected to an undercover investigation at the Pleasure Fair in Langley on the Labour Day weekend. • Tenders were called for a new fire truck for the Zone 1 (Langley City) fire department. Alderman Bob Duckworth estimated the truck would cost between $25,000 and $28,000.
• A Fort Langley houseboat community broke up when it was hit by a boom of about 40 logs. Four houseboats were knocked from their moorings. One was hit hard enough to send it right out of the marina, and it was taking on water. Nobody was hurt.
NOVEMBER 16, 1950
• A missing Coghlan area girl raised the question of truancy in Langley. The girl had not been reported absent by her school. Teams of men search the bush and smashed shacks that had been built by students in the area.

Chiefs back on track after taming Bulldogs The Chiefs put the bite on the visiting Alberni Valley Bulldogs Saturday. by Troy Landreville
tlandreville@langleyadvance.com
The Langley Chiefs had more than one reason to feel good following Saturday night’s British Columbia Hockey League game at the Langley Events Centre. First and foremost, they doubled the Alberni Valley Bulldogs 4-2, thanks to a solid team effort that saw some unlikely scoring heroes – defencemen Brad Haber and Tyler Miller – find the net in the third period. Just as encouraging was the number of fans who ventured out to the LEC on a drizzly Saturday night in November to watch them play. A recorded attendance of 2,831 took in the game, the second largest crowd of the season. The Chiefs held the Bulldogs to 28 shots during the game, which was tied 2-2 after two periods. Haber scored the game winner, his first of the campaign, 2:15 into the third period to put the
Chiefs ahead 3-2. Miller sealed the win with 22 seconds remaining in regulation when he scored into the empty net, with Bulldogs’ goaltender Frank Slubowski pulled for the extra attacker. Chiefs head coach Harvey Smyl said it wasn’t a perfect game, but he’ll take the win. “I thought it was a very entertaining hockey game, with lots of effort from everybody on the ice and lots of chances offensively,” Smyl said. “While it was an entertaining game to watch, we hoped we could be a little bit better defensively, but the guys are making some strides.” Coquitlam Express 4, Chiefs 2 Saturday’s win was also key in regaining some momentum for a Chiefs team that had lost 4-2 to the Coquitlam Express the night before at the Coquitlam Sports Centre. The Express scored goals 28 seconds apart in the third period to take a 3-2 lead, then scored an empty netter with two seconds left in regulation. Langley went ahead 2-1 on a powerplay goal from Brad McBride at the 3:23 mark of the third period.

Langley Chiefs winger Matt Ius and Alberni Valley Bulldogs goaltender Frank Slubowski followed the bouncing puck Saturday at the Langley Events Centre. Ius and the Chiefs downed the Bulldogs 4-2. The Express tied the game with a powerplay goal of their own from Massimo Lamacchia 11:36 into the final frame, then jumped ahead by a goal at the 12:04 mark with a goal from Alex Petan. After a scoreless first period, Lamacchia got the Express on
the scoreboard midway through the middle stanza. Just 1:46 after Lamacchia’s goal, Langley’s Brandon Scholten potted his second of the season to tie the score at 1-1. The Express outshot the visiting Chiefs by a narrow 33-32 margin.
Chiefs 6, Victoria Grizzlies 1 In arguably the Chiefs’ most complete road effort of the season, they dominated the Victoria Grizzlies 6-1 Wednesday at Victoria’s Bear Mountain Arena. The Chiefs led 1-0 after the first period, 3-1 after 40 minutes, and tallied three goals in the final frame to seal the victory. The Chiefs powerplay was effective, going 2-5. Both of Langley’s powerplay goals, from Darnell Dyck and Josh Hansen, came in the latter stages of the third period. Langley’s Josh Myers set the tone by scoring 26 seconds into the game, in what turned out to be the only goal of the opening period. Despite losing by five goals, the Grizzlies outshot the Chiefs 42-37. Chiefs goalie Wyatt Galley made 41 stops and was named first star of the game. ICE CHIPS: The Chiefs are currently 15-8-0-4, and sit alone in second place behind front running Powell River in the eightteam BCHL Coastal Conference. They return to the LEC ice Wednesday when they host Coquitlam. Game time is 7 p.m.

Clash 5 survives hiccups A glitch didn’t take the shine off another night at the fights in Langley City. The fifth installment of the Clash at the Cascades amateur boxing series took a few hits, but stayed on its feet. With no main event on the books for the mid-week card, held Wednesday at the Coast Hotel & Convention Centre, Clash 5 didn’t live up to its predecessors. The series has been going very well, with five boxing events taking place over eight months. According to matchmaker and City Boxing trainer Dave Allison, no promotion in B.C. has done this many boxing shows over such
a short period, since City Boxing was hosting events a few years ago at its gym. “This was a Wednesday show, which was expected to be a challenge, but in the end it was not the mid-week time slot that hurt the event,” Allison noted. “It was the fact that a fighter could not make weight.” COMBSPORT (the British Columbia Combative Sports Association), the sanctioning body that supervises and sanctions the events, has specific rules and does not yield on rules that adhere to safety. This according to Allison, who noted that the main event in a show is always the important fight and when you lose it, that will inevitably hurt the event. continued on page A21…

Cross country running
Mustang runs to gold at BC jr. development championships Langley Mustang Joel Harrison was the leader of the pack at the BC Junior Development Cross Country Club championships on Oct. 30. The 11-year-old runner won his third straight provincial championship, with another impressive showing of strategic racing at
Aldergrove Lake Park. Harrison edged out the nearest competitor by a narrow half-second margin in the battle for first place. Harrison was one of two Mustangs medal winners at the event. The top female from the Mustangs was 10-year-old Mariana Martinez, who captured bronze
behind two exceptional runners from outside the Lower Mainland. The Mustangs fielded five other runners who showed well, including nine-year-old Meghan Daniell (sixth place), 10-year-old Diego Martinez (ninth place), 11-yearold Meghan Champoux (sixth place), and 12-year-olds Breanne
DeJong (11th place) and Chloe Hetherington (19th place). The race concludes the 2010 season for the Mustangs, with track and field slated for start up in early March 2011. For more on the Mustangs, including early registration, visit www.langleymustangs.com. TELUS AUTHORIZED DEALERS Vancouver

Langley Olympian swimmers, led by Michael Macdonald, left the competition in their wake at a meet at Simon Fraser University that had an international flavour. Last weekend a team of swimmers from Langley Olympians Swim Club (LOSC) took part in the SFU Clan Cup Invitational Meet. Primarily, this annual short course (25-metre pool) meet is for junior national/university level swimmers ages 15 and over. A total of 200 swimmers, including athletes from Osaka University in Japan, took part in this meet which attracted teams from UBC, the University of Calgary, UVic SFU, and local age group swimmers. LOSC swimmers achieving a number of second swims in the finals. Top swims came from: • Macdonald, 15, who won gold in the 800m freestyle, the top LOSC result at the meet; • Hillary Metcalfe, 12, the youngest swimmer at the meet, who finished second in the 100m breaststroke and seventh in the 50m breaststroke; • Hillary’s sister Martha, 14, who was sixth overall in the 400m IM; • Kate Thomson, 15, who placed sixth in the 100m breaststroke and eighth in the 400m IM; • Rachelle Salli, 20, who swam to fifth place in the 200m backstroke and seventh in the 100m fly; and • David Killy, 20, who came in fourth in the 100m fly. Langley Olympians head coach Brian Metcalfe said the meet was a great learning experience, for the whole team to be swimming against these top class university swimmers. “They all needed to up their game, which they all did, to produce some great swims,” Metcalfe said. “It was very rewarding to see so many of them reach finals. Overall a great meet with some excellent quality racing.”
Clash 6 set for Jan. 21 …continued from page A20 The Keith Holdsworth versus Jonathon Dubois title bout was cancelled when Dubois could not make weight. The semi-main event filled the gap well with Jesse Brenner of Surrey Boxing going up against Sim Brar of Bisla Martial Arts in an all-Surrey match up. Brenner, who is ranked No. 1 in the super welterweight division, lost the first round according to all three judges. Brar, the taller of the two, used his reach advantage well and kept Brenner at bay. Brenner solved the puzzle and made the changes he needed to make to take the second round on all three cards. So it all came down to a very close final round. “The judges did agree on the round and the split decision went to Jesse Brenner who remains No. 1 ranked,” Allison reported. In a cruiserweight (190 pound) contest, Langley’s Vincent St. Pierre, a 20-year-old Trinity Western University student, won a unanimous decision over a very game and tough Andrew Blanco, 19, of POWD, a Richmond boxing club. City Boxing’s Mat Andreatta, 16, stayed busy by taking part in an exhibition bout with his sparring partner Raj Somal, 17, of Bisla Martial Arts. Novica Pavic, 21, of Surrey won an unanimous decision over 19-year-old Yves Schubert, 19, of Blue Corner Boxing. Also in action were Aman Aujla and Big Nate Nowalk. The next Clash at the Cascades is scheduled for Jan. 21. It is expected at that show Keith Holdsworth will make his comeback by challenging Hardeep Saran of Bisla Martial Arts for Saran’s COMBSPORT B.C. light heavyweight title.
