The Langley Teachers’ Association is questioning why the auditor general’s report critical of the Langley School District was removed from the school board’s website.
LTA president Susan Fonseca noted that less than a week had passed since Chair Joan Bech’s sudden resignation. Bech left just days after speaking on behalf of the district to say that the AG’s recommendations for changes would be implemented. The removal of the AG’s report prompted a strong reaction from the teachers’ union. “This makes us question the remaining trustees’ commitment to implementing the nine recommendations,” said LTA president Susan Fonseca. The district is chalking up the
removal to technology glitches. “We don’t know what happened,” said Craig Spence, the district communications manager. He said the district put its technology staff to work, returning the document to the site. That was done Monday afternoon. The report is under the “board” page, and is in with a list of other board documents. It’s also available on the LTA website, the Langley District Parent Council (DPAC) website, and at www.langleyadvance.com.
As I write this, it’s Monday, the afternoon of the fifth day of the Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley, the exact midway point in our nine-day, 800kilometre journey. It seems a good time to look back on what I’ve learned. I’ve learned how to ride on slippery wooden gym floors… still a learning process. I almost took a spill this morning at a Chilliwack middle school, and I’ve almost wiped out in Surrey, as well. Some of the scariest moments on the tour came as my back tire spun on a slick, polished floor, and I wobbled dangerously close to crashing onto some first graders. I’ve learned the locations of a whole lot of elementary, middle, and high schools in Delta, Surrey, Hope and Chilliwack. (Up next: Mission, Langley, Abbotsford, White Rock, some more Surrey.) I know exactly how loudly a gym full of properly motivated children can scream. I re-learned something I’d forgotten: just how beautiful the Fraser Canyon is. On Sunday we rode from Hope to Boston Bar and back. We went up in pouring rain, but the green mountains, cloud-shrouded, were beautiful. The jade-green Fraser River roared beneath us, visible as we crossed a bridge or emerged suddenly from a tunnel. We rode back from Boston Bar in glorious sunshine on dry roads, enjoying the freedom to race at ridiculous speeds down a couple of straightaways. I have some new secret knowledge – who makes the best dinners in Hope, who has the best bannock recipe I’ve ever tasted, where to get the best apple fritters in the Fraser Valley. (There’s a reason the veteran riders call it the Tour de Food.) I think I’m going to keep those secrets to myself.

It’s a bit of an exaggeration to say dumpster fires are par for the course for Langley City firefighters. They’re definitely more common than assistant fire chief Peter Methot would like, but one Sunday morning will go
down in the local hall’s record books as unusual. It took four hours to extinguish a blaze started in a large dumpster outside Princess Auto on the Langley Bypass, Methot said. But that wasn’t the oddest aspect of the blaze that consumed the contents of the self-contained dumpster, which
included a compressing system. It’s believed the fire started early the evening before when someone used a blow-torch to attempt to cut inside the unit in search of scrap metal. “It’s beyond suspicious,” Methot said, explaining that sparks probably ignited some of the contents, but reduced oxygen in the container just kept it
smoldering for hours. Fortunately, the fire did not threaten any nearby buildings, but Methot said the unit’s size and design also required his team to get creative. They had to come up with innovative ways to get inside the unit to both extinguish the immediate flames and ensure they didn’t flare up again.

The unexpected warm weather of Saturday meant a picture perfect day for all the groups that took part in Community Living Day in Douglas Park. Organized by the Langley Association for Community Living, the 13th annual celebration was to recognize the talents, gifts, and contributions of people living with developmental disabilities. The day featured booths by various community groups and local businesses along with live entertainment, goodies, children’s activities, contests and more. The day wrapped up with a softball game featuring the RCMP versus local media. Each team also enjoyed having Special Olympians on board, and lessthan-serious officiating was done by Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender and Langley MLA Mary Polak.

Work on Langley Township’s next roundabout won’t be finished until council releases funds next year. Contractors hired by BC Hydro are currently working on the site, undergrounding power lines around 232nd Street and 56th Avenue. Telus must also put its lines underground in the near future. The Township is also removing some of the gravel and soil that was dumped around the site last year to level and settle the ground.
Once this round of work is done, the actual roundabout won’t be built until 2011, said Paul Cordeiro, Township roads manager. That will be dependent on the Township releasing the money for the next phase in its next budget. The cost of the roundabout is an estimated $1.2 million. The roundabout is one of several the Township has considered or built over the past few years, including two on 216th Street. Others have been proposed but shot down, such as roundabouts on 16th Avenue. Roundabouts usually replace stop signs, and traffic engineers prefer them to signal lights in some areas. They cut down on serious accidents and don’t need electricity or as much maintenance.

Douglas Park Community School students will be enjoying more programs and services thanks to people who donated goods and people who snapped up deals. The school’s annual yard sale this past weekend featured a gym and hallways loaded with donated merchandise and people shopping both days. “This doesn’t work unless people do both of those things,” said Suzanne Thom, the community school coordinator. The sale made almost $4,000. She noted that the overall number of donations was down, but the quality was better and most of the items had sold by Sunday afternoon.

TransLink fancy taking flight Forget about the Evergreen Line. It seems TransLink’s latest flight of fancy is a gondola that would transport students up Burnaby Mountain to SFU. “This could be a green alternative,” TransLink’s Ken Hardie told The Vancouver Sun. “What we really need to do is have a very serious look at the concept to see if there is a business plan for it.” We’ll admit the idea is intriguing. A 2.6-kilometre tramway based on the popular Peak 2 Peak Gondola that links Whistler and Blackcomb mountains would probably attract tourists to the area. It would also shave about six minutes off a typical 14-minute bus ride up the hill. But there’s a problem: TransLink doesn’t have a budget for the project. In fact, TransLink doesn’t even have the money to pay for its share of the Evergreen Line, which it has said for years is at the top of its list, nor does it have money to meet the desperate need for better transit south of the Fraser River. So the fact that TransLink is now floating the idea of a tram makes us wonder just what is going on at the regional transportation authority. While hundreds of thousands of prospective clients to the east of current facilities deal with the reality of waiting year after year for rapid transit that never comes, TransLink is focusing on dream projects that distract public attention away from its so-called funding priorities. With the possibility of a federal election in mid-April, maybe we’ll see some federal funds then. But provincially don’t expect the Liberals to put up cash in areas where most of their MLAs have safe seats. So how does TransLink close its funding gap of hundreds of millions of dollars? No wonder officials prefer to distract themselves with flights of fancy. Their reality is too harsh.

Original proposals still supported
Dear Editor, It is not only the “Silent Majority” that wants to see ParkLane complete the Bedford Landing development [ParkLane support silent, Sept. 10 Letters, Langley Advance]. Many community members who vocally oppose the rezoning application were part of the team that negotiated, with Interfor and Langley Township, the style of development that was to be built on the old mill site in Fort Langley. And those same people do wish that ParkLane would complete the works as previously promised. They wish that basements had not been built – against the original agreement. They wish the apartment building had been built per the original agreement. They wish the agreed seniors’ residence was not just an over-45s condo block. They are flabbergasted by the errors in the expert’s report on a hotel. They wish that the agreed
two-storey shops, with apartments over, were not going to be replaced by a four-storey monster block. And as more and more communities realize the long-term value of preserving the urban riverside for community use, many of these people wish the Township would consider a new community park on the riverside there – a park big enough to play in, to celebrate in, and to entertain in, yet close enough to walk to.
So J. Farrell’s opinion is respected, but seems to be a vocal minority. The majority of people discussing ParkLane’s new proposals seem to be against them. Those vocally in favour seem to be ParkLane, a few others in the business community and with interests related to ParkLane’s, and J. Farrell. J. On top of being past the deadline for submissions to council, the Waterfront Action Committee survey [Poll aims to preserve waterfront, Sept. 7, Langley Advance] was poorly written and the questions too leading to provide useful data. The FLC association is stuck on a 10-year-old plan that was designed to sell the property, by a company that never intended to build the plan. Dear Editor, Considering the bike helmet laws, why do I only see about 20 per cent of people – including children – wearing them? Every day I tell my son and daughter they have to wear their helmets. I get a huff and a puff and they put them on. Why do I feel like I am the only one who makes their children wear them? I heard that you can prevent your child’s death by 90 per cent if you make sure they wear their helmet. Ninety per cent! Why isn’t the law being enforced? I use the off leash dog parks. All I’ve ever asked for is a place to get fresh water for them after they’ve been playing. Now these people are talking about charging us to use facilities in regional parks. We just want a natural environment where parents can bring their children and pet owners can bring their pets to have fun running around, walk a trail, have some water, and do some more running around and trail-walking. We don’t need coffee shops or concession stands. These parks are areas where we bring our own picnic stuff and enjoy the surrounds of nature. That’s what parks are all about. Do I have to pay a fee to take my dog(s) into an off-leash park with facilities that I won’t be using? Why do we have an American specialist to help us make a decision for Canadians? D. Dear editor, I’ve found out that scientists have found the PTCHD1 gene for autism, and they’re now working on a project to eliminate autism from the world, through selective abortion. This has made me very upset, as I feel that every baby that’s conceived should be brought into this world. Autism is not an illness or a disease. It’s not a life sentence, either. It’s a developmental disorder. I was diagnosed with highfunctioning autism and Asperger Syndrome at the age of five and a half. How small is too small when it comes to residential lots in Langley City? Residents are being asked for their input at one of four public meetings in City neighbourhoods south of the Nicomekl River. “Results of a survey conducted in March of this year by Ipsos Reid showed that members of the community have a broad range of perspectives on the issue of smaller residential lot sizes,” said Gerald Minchuk, the City’s Economic Development director. City council had hired a planning consultant to gauge public sentiment and prepare a report. “The consultant concluded that the smaller lot sizes concept should be given

further consideration based on the potential benefits it could bring to the community,” he said. The upcoming series of meetings will give the public more input on the issue before any decisions are made. The meetings include information on smaller lot pros and cons, a questionnaire, as well as chances to ask questions. An online questionnaire will be available later for those unable to attend the public meetings. The meetings start Oct. 5 at Uplands Elementary, 4471 207A St., at 7 p.m. Simonds Elementary, 20190 48th Ave., is the site of a 7 p.m. meeting on Oct. 6. Tommy’s career on the racetrack was not meant to be. This thoroughbred was meant for a life of breeding, said Barb Beaton, owner of Fields and Flowers Farm in South Langley. She purchased him 20 years ago as a weanling, initially hoping and expecting him to make a name for himself on the track. It became apparent quickly that this wasn’t in his cards. After a mishap with a whip and a jockey during one of his first and last races, he went on to earn himself quite a distinction as a Canadian Sports Horses national sire of confirmation and performance horses. In other words, he became quite the stud, covered an average of 70 mares a season and siring multiple hunter jumper national and regional winners, Beaton explained. “He really built this farm,” she

Being practised at swordfighting might come in handy for the bride, suggested Captain Charity (Christina Carr), head of Jade Dragon Pirates (www.jadedragonpirates.com). The young bride and her entire bridal shower party were among about 200 guests at the second
annual Talk Like a Pirate Day at The Fort Wine Co. on Saturday. Though several members of the bridal party seemed more interested in the pirates than in sword lessons, they all gained invaluable information about how to protect themselves, and each received a pirate’s certificate, Carr said. “The improv scenes kept folks entertained, and the cast got to play,” Carr said, noting the day also
included games and face-painting. “There were a few really good groups and audiences today,” the captain said. “We were very happy that the sun came out, as did the wonderful people who love pirates, fun, cheese, and wine.” The Jade Dragon Pirates is designed to do parties, educational events, and social functions, and is best known in Langley for hosting the BC RenFest each year.

Langley’s British Columbia Hockey League squad completed a brutal stretch of four games in as many days, including a trio of road outings in three Vancouver Island cities Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Chiefs battled hard, losing 4-2 to the visiting Trail Smoke Eaters Thursday at the Langley Events Centre (LEC); earning a point in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs Friday at Weyerhaeuser Arena in Port Alberni; doubling the Cowichan Valley Capitals 63 Saturday at Island Savings Centre in Duncan; and edging the Victoria Grizzlies 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Bear Mountain Arena in Victoria. Eight games into their BCHL season, the Chiefs have only lost once in regulation time, and lead the eight-team Coastal Conference with a 5-1-0-2 record.

Spartans off to winning start to BCIHL season The trick paid off as after that, momentum soon swung Trinity Western’s way. Three-and-a-half minutes after the Spartans’ first goal since 1991, Vos – last year’s BCIHL’s leading scorer and recent transfer from Fraser Valley – came off the right wing and beat Fraser Valley goalie Adam Postmus up top. The heated affair continued in typical fashion with these two teams as it quickly became clear the change of name from Titans to Spartans wasn’t about to simmer tensions within the already feisty rivalry. A little more than six minutes into the second period, the Spartans’ Josh Stephenson gave TWU a 3-1 lead when he slipped through a pair of defencemen, put a shot on net, and then buried his own rebound. In the first Spartans men’s hockey game in 20 years, the hometown Trinity Western squad downed its cross-town rivals from University of the Fraser Valley 54 Friday at the Langley Events Centre. While the Fraser Valley scored first four minutes into the game after a fluttering puck found its way to the front of the net and was quickly banged home by Chris Price, it didn’t take long for Trinity Western to find its game and even up the score. And they did it with, what will be remembered in Spartan lore as, TWU head coach “Dwayne Lowdermilk’s guts.” Midway through the first period, with the Spartans already on a five-onthree and the faceoff in the Fraser Valley zone, Lowdermilk pulled goalie John-Paul Chapman in favour of a sixth skater and, via a set play, Robert Vos hit Pete Masterton in the slot with a pass. Masterton promptly rifled the puck into the bottom corner of the UFV net.

It is with great sadness that we announce the quiet passing of Charles W. Dillen of Langley, B.C. on Sept. 17, 2010. He was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and moved to B.C. in 1950. He served his country in World War II from 1941 to 1946. After moving his family to B.C. he found work at McDonald Cedar Products in Fort Langley for the next 35 years. He had many hobbies and just generally enjoyed spending time with his family.
