Burnouts draw crowd downtown

Cruise-In or not, car buffs and hot rodders gathered to burn some rubber on Langley streets Friday.

The smell of burning rubber and the cheering of onlookers hung over Industrial Avenue in Langley City Friday night. Although the Langley Good Times Cruise-In was cancelled, more than 100 people and more than 30 classic cars lined the road between 200th and 200A Streets, from before 7 p.m. The car buffs were there to show off their cars and to check out others, but they were also there to cheer on drivers who did burnouts and doughnuts on the streets. “This is what it’s all about, right there,” said Dave, a Langley resident, indicating a soupedup engine. Hot rod and muscle car lovers like to see burnouts, Dave said. They’ve been going on along Industrial Avenue during Cruise-In weekend for a few years, he said. Dave and a friend visiting from Alberta were both sorry to see the Cruise-In shut down this year. “I loved it, I lived for this weekend,” he said. One of the drivers doing burnouts was also upset to see the Cruise-In shut down. The Langley resident declined to give his name.

He said he was sure it wouldn’t be long before the burnouts drew the police, but between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. there was no sign of a police cruiser. Rod Jones was another onlooker who was sorry the Cruise-In wasn’t taking place. He brought his two young boys to see the

burnouts and take some photos of classic cars. One burnout expert – his shirt proclaims him the “Burnout King” – wouldn’t mind seeing burnouts become a sanctioned and controlled part of the CruiseIn. “I’d rather see barricades,”

It’s still unknown if CruiseIn will return or not next year. Volunteers and Langley City officials are meeting later in the week about the question. Several people told the CruiseIn organizers in advance that they would hold their own, informal events on the weekend, whether the car show was held or not. Friday night, a more sedate crowd of car enthusiasts also filled the parking lot of the Tim Horton’s and the ICBC office on the corner of Logan and 203rd Street, which serves as an impromptu car show location every Friday during the spring and summer months.

Sunday is time to fight cancer

Langley offers up three Terry Fox Runs to choose from in 2010.

Pick the most convenient time – 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. The community has three Terry Fox Runs taking place this Sunday. Amputee Terry Fox had hoped to raise $1 from every Canadian to fund research and find a cure. When his efforts to run across Canada to raise funds and increase awareness came to a premature end with the return of his cancer, Canadians picked up the mantle, and for the past three decades, have continued to take part in the annual event. All funds raised at the annual runs are used by the Terry Fox Foundation to fund innovative cancer research. None of that money goes to administration. Registration for the 9 a.m. five- and 10-kilometre Walnut Grove runs is at 8:30 a.m. Everyone will gather at the Walnut Grove Community Centre and head out through the community. “We have lots of family join us. Strollers are very welcome. We have

They are also hoping to make the City run an annual event again. People at the City event

can do one km, five km, or 10 km routes, the longest along Nicomekl flood plain trails. The other mid-morning run takes place in Aldergrove, at the Kinsmen Community Centre, 269th Street and 29th Avenue. Registration opens at 9 a.m. with the run at 10 a.m. The Aldergrove routes are one-, two-, five- or 10kilometres. Organizer Nikki Castonguay noted that JD Turkey Farms is holding a fundraiser Sept. 18 with the proceeds becoming part of the Aldergrove totals. For Terry Fox Runs, people can walk, run, bike or even rollerblade their chosen route. The website www.terryfox.org lets people know which runs also allow people to bring their dogs on leashes. Pledge sheets are available from organizers or via the website www. terryfox.org. People can register online in advance. Participants do not need to reside in a community to take part in its event. The runs also go no matter the weather. “Terry ran rain or shine and so will we,” Copley noted.

Convicted murderer back on trial

Aldergrove’s Davey Mato Butorac made a brief court appearance last week, and the convicted killer is expected back later this month. Butorac, convicted earlier this year of two

Firefighters and Langley City politicians offered their tributes to fallen emergency responders as they unveiled a statue of a firefighter on Friday. The statue is located in front of the City’s fire hall in the 5700 block of 203rd Street, placed as if in the act of raising a flag. City Councillor Rosemary Wallace thanked the many community members whose passion led to the statue’s creation. Her mind was on the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks as the statue was unveiled, she said. In particular, the sacrifices of firefighters in the Twin Towers were in the

Referendum mostly a stall Voters of British Columbia will have a chance to decide for themselves what should be done about the HST. But their decision will have no more weight than a strong suggestion. A special committee comprised of 10 MLAs – six from the government side of the legislature and four from the opposition – has voted to take the Harmonized Sales Tax to a non-binding referendum a little more than a year from now. Not surprisingly, since the committee’s make-up was dominated by BC Liberals, the decision is the most favourable outcome for Premier Gordon Campbell and his government. It’s also no surprise that the NDP members of the committee wanted to send Bill Vander Zalm’s anti-HST bill – the result of his successful citizen’s initiative – directly to the legislature, to be put to a binding and conclusive vote. Scheduling a referendum for Sept. 24 of next year accomplishes two things for the beleaguered Liberal government and its leader. Surely, they are hoping that a full year will allow angry British Columbians – whipped to a frenzy by the anti-HST campaign – to forget what they hate about the HST, while (they surely hope) the economy recovers enough for riled voters to calm down. It will also give the government some time to marshal its forces, and offer the explanations it should have offered long ago. The referendum approach also favours the Liberals in that it is non-binding. Even if voters vote overwhelmingly to quash the HST, the government is not obliged to listen, anymore than it has listened to ordinary citizens on this issue thus far. On the other hand, the obvious stall could just rile voters even more. – B.G.

Mufford overpass

New road will benefit farms

Dear Editor, To the Agricultural Land Commission: I am a council member for the Township of Langley. I had the opportunity of attending your public meeting regarding our proposed overpass crossing in the vicinity of 64th Avenue and Mufford Crescent, Aug. 30. We at the Township of Langley have had several open meetings with the public regarding the 64th and Mufford overpass. Langley is not an anti-farming community. We have a rural plan that has been used as a template for many rural communities. It recognizes a variety of farm uses and protects much of our 75-80 per cent of Langley’s land in the Agricultural Land Reserve. Langley is concerned about safety at rail crossings. We have the support of our police and fire departments for the initiative of a rail overpass for safety reasons. After much hard work and through negotiations with the province, TransLink, and the railways, we have negotiated the 64th and

Mufford rail overpass. We cannot stop the trains (many of which are more than two kilometres long), nor can we force them to divert their routes. An overpass is our only option. We are not merely pushing a road and overpass through. We are expected to mediate strict conditions that will enhance the farmland, with an improved drainage plan for the area and a road shape using the least amount of farmland. We are not promoting a new bypass route with commercial/industrial businesses dotted along the route. I, for one, will not tolerate this suggestion. The land will remain agricultural, and that is final. The plan promotes an east-west highway route beneficial for future transportation. The Township of Langley has presented a plan that promotes a best-case scenario, given the challenge of the railway and our citizens’ safety. Frustration grows from land losses

Dear Editor, I am saddened by my friend Donna Passmore’s decision to resign as B.C.-wide director of the Farmland Defence League [Passmore resigns, Sept. 10, Langley Advance]. However, with thousands of members and many partner groups, FDL remains intact and actively committed to supporting the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) in enforcing their mandate, regardless of provincial and local council shenanigans. Many of us are frustrated at how the mandate of the ALC, explicitly to protect farmland, has been pushed aside for road projects and related development. However, I have high hopes that the new ALC chair can breathe the mandate back into the ALC. ALC Chair Richard Bullock has opened up some public dialogue which we have not had in the past 10 years. In the case of the Mufford overpass, all public input, both local and provincial, has been a clear “no.” We don’t want the Mufford overpass as proposed; it is

clearly the first phase of a mega-project on farmland, and as such, it is not good for Langley. The Mufford overpass is part of documented proposals to connect a new 216th Street freeway interchange across more farmland in a north-south fashion. It has no real use for Langley as an east-west connector. ALC Chair Bullock has let the public speak, and we have said, “No.” Elusive Mufford proponents seem only to be imaginary and unsubstantiated claims from a council majority, but not in the public meetings. I pray that Chair Richard Bullock will enforce ALC mandate, and not our provincial-council agenda. The job that Donna Passmore did was not an easy one, and it did not have a great deal of gratification. I hope that, after we see the ALC upholding its mandate, perhaps Donna will re-join FDL. HST has made us forget July’s carbon tax Dear Editor, I know most people are in a furor over the HST, myself included, but what most of us have overlooked is the added carbon tax that hit us in July, as well. I recently bought a fishing reel in Edmonton Mall. The sales person there expressed his outrage at the price of gas and the HST, saying he doubted he could afford to come back to B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell has expressed his arrogance and insensibility to the will of the people. Throughout the past few months we have received a barrage of misinformation and gobbledegook that it’s going to be good for us. For whom, I wonder? Meanwhile, Gordo is so busy trying to save the planet with his unproven theories about “global warming.”

But on A14 of the same edition, you have not very bright people who are going to waste good food [Eggs sacrificed for a good cause] by tossing eggs off Township buildings. How can they justify this wanton waste of a valuable food source in the name of charity? It makes absolutely no sense. Give the eggs to the food bank. Benefit delayed

A fundraising golf tournament benefiting professional golfer Sue Kim is put on hold. The tournament, to help Kim raise funds to attend Qualifying School, was originally to take place Monday, Sept. 20, at The Redwoods Golf Course [Kim fundraiser teeing off, Sept. 10, Langley Advance], and has been postponed. “Once I’m back at home, I’ll be able to organize it better and have it actually ready by the day of the tournament,” Kim wrote, in an email to the Advance. Kim, who last month finished in a three-way tie for third in her pro debut at the 2010 Canadian PGA Women’s Championship in Burlington, Ont., is currently away in Palm Springs, Calif., for the Qualifying School for LPGA.

It’s not a long walk, but it will go a long way to help the wild animals being rehabilitated in South Langley. The five-kilometre Walk

on the Wild Side event will be held on Oct. 3, to benefit the Critter Care Wildlife Society. The society takes in injured and orphaned animals, from flying squirrels to bears, and nurses them back to health for re-release. Volunteer Elaine Stirling is organizing this year’s walk-a-thon. Last year’s made $6,800. “We were quite pleased with that, so we’re going

to try and make it an annual event,” she said. Walkers pay a $5 registration fee, and raise pledges for doing the walk. The walk will be held from the south entrance of the Campbell Valley Regional Park, off 8th Avenue, with registration from 11:15 a.m. onsite. The registration deadline is Sept. 24. New bean counter hired

After a number of less-than-lengthy postings, the Langley school district’s top financial position has been filled. J. David Green has been hired after spending 30 years working in the public and private sectors. His most recent job was with the Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District, where he has worked since 2002 as a secretary-treasurer. Green is a chartered accountant, and is president of the B.C. Association of School Business Officials.

“We are very pleased to have Mr. Green as our corporate officer and chief financial officer,” said school board J. David Green Chair Joan Bech. Secretary-treasurer Green will take up his duties later this fall. The last permanent secretary-treasurer was Wayne Braun, who stayed for just four months in late 2009. Interim secretary-treasurer Dave Greenan stayed one day past his retirement to help see the district through a special budget meeting in June. Since Peter Greenwood left the post in late 2009, there has been no stable, longterm figure in the position.

Mall hula hoopers swing A Langley teen was among those who swung their hips for hours and ultimately won a prize. It is hard for most to fathom swinging a hula hoop for more than a few minutes. But recently, Willowbrook Shopping Centre held a competition that extended beyond mall hours – with the top two adult contestants surpassing the five- and six-hour marks. Willowbrook held what was called an Endurance Hooping Competition at the end of August that drew out 57 contestants from age five to senior. “The competition was amazing,” said Meghan McCrea, marketing director for Willowbrook. “One young girl calmly read two books while hooping. Another young boy swung the hula hoop around his waist at warp speed. Other contestants dance to the music as they hooped away.” The new competition – held in the mall’s centre court – was open to four age categories: children (four to 12 years old), teens (13-18), adults (19-64), and seniors (65 years and older). Everyone was competing for $250 Willowbrook gift cards. “All in all, the event was a great way to bring the community together and celebrate the end of summer with some hip-shaking fun,” said McCrea, adding that contestants lasted much longer than organizers had expected. The winners, those who continued without any washroom, food or beverage breaks, including 10-year-old Kaitlyn Gobillot of Surrey, the winner of the children’s category, for hooping three hours, 32 minutes, and 26 seconds (3:32:26).

In the teen category, the prize went to 15-year-old Lynnda Kim, of Langley, who hooped for 2:59:00. Evelyn Baillie, a 65-year-old from Surrey, won the senior’s category, hooping 0:33:08. “The shopping centre decided to amend the rules and award two prizes for the adult category, as at mall closing time the last two contestants were still hooping,” McCrea said. A drunk driver who left the scene of a crash, with his airbags inflated, was caught by Langley RCMP just before midnight Saturday. The driver had hit a car in the southbound lanes of the Golden Ears Bridge. The driver who had been hit called the Langley RCMP with a description of the fleeing car, and a licence plate number. The car was found nearby in a parking lot in the 9700 block of 197B Street, said RCMP Cpl. Holly Marks. A breathalyzer test held at the RCMP headquarters found that the 33-year-old

Surrey man had twice the legal bloodalcohol content. The driver will appear in Surrey Provincial Court on Dec. 9. That was not the last time a drunk driver tangled with RCMP on the weekend. On Sunday at 5:30 p.m., a three-vehicle crash at 44th Avenue and 200th Street sent three people to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Marks said. One driver, a 30-year-old Langley resident, was arrested for impaired driving, and refused to blow into the breathalyzer. He now faces an impaired driving charge and a charge of refusing to provide a breath sample.

I got up Sunday morning at 6 a.m. and frantically checked my email, hoping there was a message from our team captain or trainer, with the magic word “cancelled.” No luck. The rain was drumming like a manic metalhead in mid-solo, and it would do that all day. All six and a half hours that the Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley team would hold its final – and longest – training ride. This was the big one, the century ride. And by “century” I mean 100 miles, not 100 kilometres. Trainer/RCMP sergeant/ professional cycle torturer Tim Anctil had thoughtfully created an almost entirely flat route through the Sumas Prairie, Chilliwack, and Harrison Hot Springs. So at least we wouldn’t be going up or down hills in the deluge. We had an excellent turnout, despite the weather. Almost every rider was there, and of those who weren’t, at least two were deathly ill. Strep throat does not provide extra oomph to a long bike ride. We were damp before we started, we were soaked after half an hour and the first dozen klicks. Yet the mood was jubilant. Const. Les Betker, from Boston Bar, brought duck call whistles for several riders. When riders blew them, they drew looks from the few pedestrians or other

cyclists who were braving the weather (not to mention freaking out at least one actual duck). In south Chilliwack, we found ourselves riding part of the same route as a bike race. We breezed past one checkpoint, with a volunteer staring at us, wondering if we were going the wrong way. We also shared stories about our fundraising efforts, and about the upcoming tour. As one of the ride newbies, I’ve been asking quite a few questions. Jason Charles, a sheriff who works in the Surrey Courthouse, told me he found himself choking up last year when children at one school gave the riders crayon-drawn thank you cards. For ride captain Ken Usipiuk, it’s always the visits to the schools where junior team members – children with cancer – attended that get him misty eyed. “The ones that may have lost their battle,” he said. Even when the rain is pounding down, and teeth are chattering, there’s a good reason to keep going. The dollars raised by Tour de Valley all go to supporting children with cancer. By the end of the ride, we may have been a bit subdued – until the parking lot came into view, and we let out shouts of triumph. We’d completed a day of riding that was worse than anything the actual Tour de Valley will throw at us. • The Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley takes place Sept. 23 to Oct. 1, and riders will cover 800 kilometres over nine days, raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society. School Inspector Calvert was sent from Victoria to assume control of Langley school operations. The mentally handicapped man had been brought to Langley Memorial Hospital where he underwent treatment and observation for three hours before being released. While the trips can be challenging, Libby and Steeves, who are both retired, say hiking and snowshoeing are great ways to stay active physically and socially. “People may wonder, ‘Can I do it? Am I too old? Am I not fit enough?’ but we manage because we are together and encourage one another,” Libby said. “There is a lot of enthusiasm.” There are “humongous spin-offs” from it, too, said Steeves. While those in the program start off making regular weekly treks to regional parks, mountains, lakes, and canyons within the Lower Mainland, bonds quickly form and soon new friends are hiking, camping, and vacationing on their own. “The friendships that have stemmed from this are incredible,” Steeves said, encouraging those who enjoy the great outdoors and may be going for long walks on their own, or participating in activities such as pole-walking to give hiking and snowshoeing a try. “It is more than just fitness: it is wellness,” said Libby. explained. “For Level 2, participants should be in good physical condition and come prepared with hiking equipment,” she said. A daypack, rain gear, and proper footwear are needed for the hikes, and arrangements can be made to outfit those who are without snowshoes. Trips run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for both levels, and the cost for each session is $34. Transportation from the Aldergrove Kinsmen Community Centre or the W.C. Blair Recreation Centre is included, along with leadership for each trip. For Libby, snowshoeing was something she did as a teenager in Girl Guides. She was eager to try it again. But planning trips and getting to and from potential destinations was a hassle. That’s why she was pleased to sign up for the local program. “I love the peacefulness of being out in the woods, but my friends and I didn’t want to organize trips or drive there ourselves. Plus, we could always talk ourselves out of it,” Libby laughed. “But this way, there is nothing nicer than having someone drive you home so you can relax and reflect on the day. A full day of physical activity, stunning local scenery, and socializing with others: for some people, hiking and snowshoeing aren’t just activities, they are a chance to enhance wellness and forge friendships. For many years, the Township of Langley has been offering programs that give people a chance to enjoy the great outdoors in the company of others. Monday marked the start of a new season of hiking excursions that will morph into snowshoeing expeditions when winter arrives. Long-time participants Judie Steeves and Ann Libby are eager to start the new season. They also hope newcomers interested in trying hiking and snowshoeing will sign on and discover a new passion. Whether walking on the ground or the snow, the women say it is an excellent way to stay in shape, clear the mind, and meet new friends. “We love to get out there and pound away,” Steeves said. “Yes we get wet, yes we get muddy, but it’s a very friendly bunch and the program is excellent. Anybody new who comes out will not be left on their own. There’s a lot of camaraderie.” Two levels of hiking and snowshoeing are offered, said Township recreation leader Alex Thompson. Hiking and Snowshoeing Level One provides an experience for those new to outdoor recreation. Day trips take place every Monday (they started Sept. 13) until Dec. 13, and vary from easy walking to moderate hiking or snowshoeing. “We will be travelling a distance of five to eight kilometres each trip, with elevation gains of up to 1,300 feet,” Thompson explained. Those who are experienced or looking for more of a challenge can join the Level 2 program. Daytrips take place every Wednesday (they started Sept. 8) until Dec. 15, and the hikes and snowshoeing trips are rated easy to difficult. Participants will travel seven to 14 kilometres in distance, and expeditions may involve elevations gain of up to 1,495 feet, Thompson

Chiefs clip Eagles, then earn point in OT loss

Ask the Langley Chiefs’ coaches and they’ll tell you: there were few moral victories to pull from their team’s British Columbia Hockey League home opener Saturday at the Langley Events Centre (LEC). Sure, the Chiefs erased thirdperiod deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 to earn an overtime point in front of 2,907 fans at the LEC. But the bottom line is, the Chiefs lost 4-3 in OT to the visiting Surrey Eagles. Head coach Harvey Smyl didn’t like what he saw. “I thought we were easy to play against, and I thought we were poor in a lot of areas,” Smyl said. “I thought we didn’t play well, whatsoever. Certain guys did good things at times and poor things at times. Our older leaders need to be better than they were.” Associate coach Barry Wolff said the setback left a somewhat bitter taste. “It was definitely great to get the point, but we didn’t play even close to our potential,” Wolff said. “Our goals are pretty high. We think we have a pretty good team this year.” The Eagles scored once in first period and again in the middle stanza to carry a 2-0 lead into final frame. The Chiefs’ Josh Myers played like a man possessed early in the third period to spark his team’s comeback bid. Myers deftly tipped in the Chiefs’ first goal at the 4:11 mark. Less than two minutes later, he tied the game on a goal-mouth scramble.

Tuohy’s goal stood up as the game winner. The third period was scoreless for more than 16 minutes, before Surrey’s Jeff Vanderlugt made things interesting by scoring on a powerplay with 3:15 remaining in regulation. Surrey’s comeback attempt ended with 41 seconds to play, when Chiefs defenceman Tim Daly deposited the puck into the empty net, with Lessard pulled for the extra attacker. ••• The Chiefs have added some depth at the forward position by acquiring Darnell Dyck in a deal with the Okotoks Oilers of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. To make the deal, the Chiefs had to part ways with versatile defenceman Colten Hayes. Hayes spent one season in Langley, splitting time between defence and at forward. With recent moves that the Chiefs have made, bringing in Ius and Mike Tebbutt, the club wanted to add another playmaker and did so with Dyck. Adding some intrigue to the story is Darnell Dyck the fact that Newest Langley Chief Dyck was a one-time Chiefs stickboy. “Darnell is a player who will add some more size to our forward corps and at this time it was another piece to the puzzle in trying to put the best team possible on the ice,” said Smyl, who was careful not to place expectations on his new addition. Next up, the Chiefs travel to Prince George Friday to take on the Spruce Kings, and visit Quesnel Saturday for a date with the Millionaires.

For that reason, I love taking part in the Lions’ community efforts during the season, particularly the club’s annual Timbits Camp. Colleen Webber had their initial shots stymied by Barton before the open net was found to put TWU up 1-0 in the 12th minute. With steadily improving offensive pressure throughout the first half, the Dinos were rewarded by their midfielder Brittany Benson in the 32nd minute. Taking a pass from Lindsay Burrowes, Benson’s long shot just squeaked past Spartans goaltender Kristen Funk to tie the game up at one. Funk had eight saves in the victory for TWU while Barton suffered her second eight-save loss of the weekend despite solid play in net for the Dinos. “I was really pleased with the way we started. We really got after it and had lots of ball pressure and it was a great goal to finish,” TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh said. “I was also pleased that in the second half we were able to respond well after a tough situation.” Shortly after halftime the game was delayed due to a scary situation involving rookie Trinity Western defender Jennifer Castillo. After a Dinos free kick went wide of the Spartans’ net, Castillo fell to the ground, seemingly untouched, and was attended by training staff. She was taken off the pitch via ambulance. TWU sports information director Scott Stewart said Castillo fainted on the field, and flew home late Sunday. He said she will be reevaluated this week. The Spartans will return home to host the University of Regina Cougars and the University of Manitoba Bisons this weekend.
