Hugh Oakes married into a pretty wild family. Since the 1970s, he’s been surrounded by absolute animals. Oakes married into the Hines family when they owned the Vancouver Game Farm (now called the Greater Vancouver Zoo). The 120-acre facility opened its doors Aug. 20, 1970. Pat and Ann Hines operated the game farm with family members and a few employees, before turning over operation to their daughter Eleanor and her new husband Hugh. The Oakes sold the facility in 1991. Hugh was back for the threeday anniversary celebration over the weekend to see how the facility has changed over the years. “We had more animals,” Oakes explained. “But I had a zoo staff of three.” He noted that times have changed for zoos. Back when it started, there was more emphasis on captive breeding to supply other facilities. But the prices for animals have dropped so there isn’t the same incentive. After selling, the Oakes owned and operated the Okanagan Game Farm until its long-term lease expired and they sold off in

Langley City Councillor and artist Rosemary Wallace put her acrylic painting, which she calls Come Together in Song, up for bids at Arts Alive!, with proceeds going to the Langley City Terry Fox Run set for Sept. 19.
It was a street party of epic proportions that attracted thousands to downtown Langley City’s this weekend. It was the annual Arts Alive!, and organizer Teri James said the huge crowds and ambience made the oneday festival the best she and others have ever seen in the event’s 17-year history. “The best part for me was that it was very much felt like a street festival,”
James said, pointing to the mix of music, exhibitors, food, activities, and buskers making an ideal combination. “I think it went exceptionally well,” said James, who has overseen the past eight Arts Alive! festivals. In fact, arriving in the office Monday morning, she was confronted with a sea of emails. It turned out that every one of the three-dozen correspondence bore accolades, and most also contained requests from vendors wanting to sign up for next year. “As event organizer, it’s always nice to get the positive feedback,” James said. “I’ve received nothing negative at all.”

Pooch gets new leash on life Surgery and therapy have helped rescue a dog named Indy from a life of pain.
by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
Indy doesn’t have a middle setting. The pub-Boston terrier mix is tearing around the Brookswood home of Oliver and Hama Bender. Indy is playing with her new best friend, fellow canine Kirby. Finally, she’s pooped. Indy drools a bit, then plops down at the feet of Oliver and promptly goes to sleep. “It doesn’t slow her down,” Oliver said. He’s talking about her malformed hind leg. Indy runs with a very slight limp, the result of a genetic condition that left a back leg twisted and painful from the time she was a puppy. Now, at about two years old, the dog is pain-free thanks to two sets of owners and the Langley Animal Protection Society (LAPS). Indy’s story began with a breeder somewhere near Prince George. LAPS director Sean Baker believes she was the product of bad breeding, of a breeder who was just trying to create as many pups as possible. Indy’s degenerative bone condition was likely a result of not keeping track of which animals were related. “It showed classic signs of somebody who was just breeding dogs for profit,” Baker said. Indy’s back leg has a degenerative bone condition. The femur, the bone between the knee and the hip, wasn’t formed properly. Indy began to show signs of problems fairly early on. Her first owners, a family from Walnut Grove, took Indy to the vet and paid for badly needed orthopedic surgery. The surgery was a success, but to ensure Indy regained the use of her leg, months of expensive rehab were also needed. Her original family simply couldn’t afford it. They reluctantly arranged to place her with LAPS, which could get her the care she needed.

Oliver and Hama Bender have taken in Indy, a dog that was born with a malformed leg. LAPS partnered with Canine H2O, an Abbotsford firm that offers swimming therapy for dogs. Several free swims were arranged, and Indy’s leg gained strength as she paddled about in the pool. In between, leg exercises had to be performed regularly. Indy is now thought to be pain-free, and she has regained a significant amount of use in her bad leg, Baker said. While she was still recovering, LAPS began looking for a new home in which to place a dog that might still have costly vet bills in years to come. They called the Benders, who had been looking for a canine friend for Kirby, their previous shelter dog. They brought Kirby to meet Indy, and the
two hit it off right away. Kirby, although bigger, is a bit of a pushover, so Indy, smaller but high energy, is a good partner, the Benders explained. “She’s so fast, even with it [her leg] being less developed,” Hama said. They also noted that Indy is fearless, friendly with people and dogs, and tolerant of their cat. The dogs will have plenty of company, as they accompany Oliver to work every day. The Benders know that arthritis may be a problem for Indy later in life, but they’re prepared for the vet bills and extra care she may need. “She seems to be settling in really well,” Oliver said.

block early Saturday morning. Just after 2 a.m. the pickup turned from Fraser Highway on 201A Street, where the road check was set up. Rather than stop for the officers – who were wearing reflective vests and holding flashlights topped with orange cones – the driver swerved over the centre line and drove directly at one Mountie. The officer managed to jump out of the way unharmed, said Langley
RCMP Cpl. Holly Marks. An officer in a car, lights and sirens on, followed the pickup to Michaud Crescent, where the truck slammed into an apartment and lamp post. The driver, a 22-year-old Surrey man, was arrested and hospitalized for injuries. A blood sample was taken to check for alcohol. The truck had to be hauled out of the building. Charges of assault with a weapon and impaired driving may be laid.

Mountie recovers from Friday crash
A local police officer was responding to an armed robbery when he was struck on the Langley Bypass Friday afternoon. A veteran Langley Mountie was in hospital Friday afternoon, after his cruiser collided with a pickup truck at 56th Avenue and the Langley Bypass. The officer was responding to an armed robbery call at the TD Canada Trust on Willowbrook Drive, when he was struck in the centre of the intersection. He was rushed to hospital by ambulance, but Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly Marks said Monday his injuries included a mild concussion and soft tissue damage. She noted that the driver of the pickup was not injured in the crash. Police temporarily closed 56th Avenue, both east and westbound, while Langley Traffic Services investigated the accident with the assistance of the Integrated This story first appeared Collision Analyst and as breaking news at Reconstruction Services. www.langleyadvance.com The crash occurred at about 2:50 p.m. when the officer was driving northbound on the bypass, with his emergency equipment activated, Marks explained. The eastbound pickup collided with the rear driver’s side quarter panel of the police cruiser. The truck sustained front end damage, and Marks said both vehicles were towed from the site and will undergo mechanical inspections. “Police are taking measurements at the scene of the collision and will complete neighbourhood inquiries to ensure they have spoken to all potential witnesses,” Marks said. Anyone who witnessed the crash, who has not yet spoken to police, is asked to call Langley RCMP at 604532-3200 as soon as possible.

Finding funds is the hard part Gearing Up
Cyclists are like paddling ducks. The upper body stays almost motionless, while the legs move furiously. Matthew Claxton Similarly, there is a lot mclaxton@langleyadvance.com of furious work that goes on more-or-less below the surface before the Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley hits the road. If you could peek into the mass emails that fly back and forth between the riders, you’d see more than 20 people coordinating dozens of fundraising events. Everyone wants to get a few extra dollars to hand over to the Canadian Cancer Society, to benefit children with cancer. Every rider has pledged to raise a minimum of $5,000 before putting feet to pedals on Sept. 23. That means asking for money from the public, and asking for it in creative ways. If you were in downtown Langley City on the weekend, you may have had your picture taken with Const. Karen Cryer, who was helping out with a fundraiser organized by my co-workers at the Langley Advance. Like that effort, a lot of fundraisers put the riders front and centre. And like that effort, they almost all require a group effort. We’re a team not just on our bikes, but while getting those all-important donations. This spring, Sheriffs Jason Charles and Eric Mead organized a Spinathon in Surrey, getting a whole host of riders to ride stationary bikes in the middle of the Guildford Mall for a weekend. Shoppers got to watch us going nowhere, fast, for three days. Then there are the pole sits. Tour de Valley team captain Ken Usipiuk is a big fan of pole sits. Which is good, as he’s done them five years running in North Delta. Usipiuk spends about 40 hours on a rocking metal platform in front of a Save-On-Foods “It’s a small sacrifice,” he said after his July event. “This is the easy part. Riding our bikes for nine days is the easy part.” With two other riders, he raised more than $8,000 in a weekend. We’re now in the final month before the ride actually begins, and like training to ride, the fundraising is moving into high gear. Pub nights and pole sits, jail and bails, and of course pleas to friends and family will all be involved in the next four weeks. One thing I’ve found is that people are incredibly generous when you ask. A small part of it is the fact that we’re going to undertake the ride. But the larger part is the cause. Everyone understands the importance of the Canadian Cancer Society’s work. Almost everyone who donates takes me aside and says “I lost my father/mother/sister/brother/child/friend to cancer. I wish I could give more.” • The 2010 Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley takes place Sept. 23 to Oct. 1, as riders – including myself – travel from Delta to Boston Bar and back.

Many employers are looking to change shift patterns, reduce overtime, cut back on pay or benefits, freeze wage levels, or minimize bonuses. The employment contract may permit some changes, however, the employer must still act reasonably, for example giving employees prior notice of such changes. Even if a benefit is non-contractual or discretionary, the employee may still be entitled to it, if it has been provided consistently over time. A prudent measure is to explain the reasons for the change and seek the employees’ agreement. If a unilateral change is made and the employee continues to work, the employee may be deemed to impliedly agree to the change. This is more likely if the change is felt immediately, such as a pay cut, rather than later, such as reduced severance or pension benefits. However, the employee can resign and claim for constructive dismissal if they do not agree to a fundamental change and reasonable notice of the change was not given. It may be safer to dismiss with working notice and then re-hire on revised terms.

Wild ride lasts 40 long years In a world of shifting enterprises and quick-change business assets, reaching a 40-year milestone is a significant accomplishment. It’s even more significant when the public’s perception of the type of business being conducted has changed dramatically – and not necessarily in a psitive way – over those four decades. Of course, shifting public perception over the treatment of animals – and particularly “wild” animals in captivity – hasn’t been the only hurdle that the Greater Vancouver Zoo has had to overcome to reach its 40th anniversary as one of Langley’s, and certainly Aldergrove’s, pre-eminent tourist attractions. There have been controversies to fuel the flames of public perception – eagerly fanned by animal rights activists – particularly in the zoo’s more recent history. There was the matter of a suitable enclosure for Hazina the Hippo, a project that seemed to go on interminably, until charges were laid – and then dropped at about the time it became clear that the ever-stretching timeline collapsed and the fine, new facilities came into being. There was longtime favourite Tina the Elephant’s deteriorating condition, finally relieved by her removal to a more suitable facility in the United States – but too late, as she died not long after her arrival there. There were positive points, too, like the zoo’s involvement in saving endangered species like the Oregon spotted frog. The zoo’s tourism dollars boost the local economy, and there is no denying some educational – alongside the entertainment – value for children (of all ages) to see live wild animals up close, even if wild behaviour may not come with package for many species kept in captivity. For some activists it has been 40 years too long… but as long as thousands continue to flock to the zoo, and as long as watchful eyes ensure that the animals are treated well, it will remain a significant part of the local business community. – B.G.

Mufford overpass
ALC seeks more information Dear Editor,
In a final gasp, the Agricultural Land Commission has convened a public information meeting on the Mufford Crescent/64th Avenue overpass proposal, at the Langley Events Centre at 7 p.m. on Aug. 30. The first public hearings on the issue were held 20 months ago, and again with farmers and concerned citizens a few weeks ago, on July 22. The proponent, with his engineering resource (who gave us the 200th Street/Highway One intersection), advised that this four-lane travesty is required to transport cit-
izens of the Willoughby area to the hayfields of eastern Langley. They were unable to defend dumping all of that traffic onto 216th Street, currently a busy two-lane rural road. They refused to consider the “J Option,” proposed at the original meeting, as it did not meet the required east/west connectivity test. The only reason I can see the need for east/west connectivity is for the eventual development of the Salmon River Uplands, once GVRD water hits that area. This might prove the real economic “prize” for the developers, and this

Schools circumvent tax hike Dear Editor,
I was just on the B.C. provincial website, looking at what is taxable. I found it interesting that, if a school or school board makes a purchase, there is no tax. Maybe schools should be purchasing school supplies [Back to school now pricier, Aug. 3 Letters, Langley Advance] and passing the cost on to the students via a school fee.

Free speech
Students’ rights escorted off Dear Editor,
Recently a fellow Kwantlen classmate was escorted off the premises of Surrey’s campus and told to stop handing out his flyers about the school’s new cafeteria provider, a multi-national corporation with a long list of allegations questionable work practices. It is one of the largest private prison operators in the world, and has contracts with the U.S.A. military. When students are buying food from this provider, they are ultimately supporting the profit of punishment and war. At an educational institution where we are taught to be critical thinkers and take direct action to bring change, a student was punished and refused the right to express an opinion. I hope I’m not the only one frightened by this, and scared of what rights the university will take away next.
Kirsten Williams, Langley

is a subtle way to get fast access built. The J Option allows for the eventual and inevitable expansion of the Kwantlen agricultural campus, a community rail station for Kwantlen, and most critically, handling the seamless rerouting of traffic off of the Langley Bypass to eastbound Glover Road (Highway 10) and on to Highway 1, or westbound to 64th Avenue with preemptive lights when unit trains cross the b ypass – thus ensuring the desired east/west connectivity. As the number of unit trains will double over the next 20 years, this is a critical feature and benefit of the J Option solution. It is imperative local citizens put their vacations on hold for three hours on Aug. 30 and make their views known to the ALC.

Animal welfare
People need saving first Dear Editor,
I am more than a little concerned regarding the priorities we appear to have established. While there are devastating floods in Pakistan rendering millions homeless and countless men, women, and children dead, we decide to use our scarce charity dollars to rescue Chihuahuas – all of this with the encouragement of Donny Osmond, from one of the richest families in the western world. Am I alone in my thinking that there is something wrong with this?

Census
Conservatives don’t need accuracy Dear Editor,
I have many concerns about MP Mark Warawa’s letter [Census threats not appropriate, Aug. 17 Letters, Langley Advance]. The Long Form Census has served this country well. Canada has lost a dedicated and respected civil servant, Dr. Munir Sheikh, former head of Statistics Canada, who resigned due to the Conservative government’s fumbling to fix something which does not require fixing. The list of groups opposed to the Conservative government’s proposed changes to the Long Form Census is long because a non-mandatory census is statistically invalid, and useless.
TODAY’S FLYERS... in the Call 604-856-7733 for delivery info.
Yet the Conservative government is proposing to spend $30 million more for a useless, voluntary census. The privilege of living in a country like Canada includes the responsibility of voting in elections, and of completing both the short and long census forms. I would have to conclude that the Conservative government does not need accurate data to govern, since they have shown that they govern on ideology.

Guides compiling school kits For children whose lives revolve around disaster, war, and poverty, school supplies can be a sign that someone far away cares. by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@langleyadvance.com
O
lga Nickel’s goal is to send 1,000 school kits from Langley to needy children around the world this fall. And she’s well on her way to reaching that target thanks to help from a few hundred Langley residents, and a gaggle of Girl Guides from White Rock, explained Nickel, manager of the Mennonite Central Committee’s Ten Thousand Villages store in
downtown Langley City. All the Sparks, Brownies, Girl Guides, Pathfinders, Rangers, and Guide leaders with the Peninsula District of Girl Guides of Canada are helping compile hundreds of drawstring bags filled with school supplies for children in Third World countries, explained the group’s international advisor Leslie Payne. Their contribution to this program began last year, with the Guides putting together about 100 kits after Payne serendipitously discovered the program while shopping in Ten Thousand Villages. There wasn’t enough time to put together a district-wide undertaking last year, but Payne was able to reach out and get a commitment from all the girls and women before this year’s summer break. They’re expected to compile 280 to 300 kits in mid-September. continued on page A12…

He said like many research facilities, TWU tries to minimize use of animals but for some research, they are necessary. The construction will allow up to 50 more students to do research and provides modern facilities for students and staff “so we can do cutting edge, world-class research right here at Trinity Western University,” Leung told the Langley Advance. During the formal ceremony, Leung and the other dignitaries shared that they are working in the name of God. “We trust that our activities in this extension will glorify His name,” he said.

Dr. Ka Yin Leung, the dean of natural and applied sciences, and TWU president Dr. Jonathan Raymond are looking forward to construction of the Neufeld Science Centre expansion. Heavy equipment is already in place but paused long enough to allow for the ground-breaking ceremony Monday afternoon.

rinity Western University’s Neufeld Science Centre was built in 1964 and updated in 1993. Since the march of science never ceases, the Christian university decided it was time to update the centre again with a $3.3-million expansion. Dignitaries broke ground Monday on the space that will provide 8,624 square feet of science and technology research labs and teaching space for the university’s nursing, chemistry,
and biology programs. The work involves a two-storey addition to the existing Neufeld centre. Construction is expected to be done by mid 2011. “We’ll be ready for our summer programs,” said Dr. Ka Yin Leung, who heads up the natural and applied sciences department. The federal government is providing more than $2.6 million from the Knowledge Infrastructure Program for post-secondary schools. That funding is for the science centre, Norma Marion Alloway Library, and an upgrade of TWU’s information and communications technology infrastructure. The science centre project will increase TWU’s research capacity. Leung explained that they will

found the hands-on aspect of shopping for the school supplies particularly meaningful. Some children even spend their own allowance money. They can’t imagine being so poor that they have no paper,” Nickel said. “All of us at Ten Thousand Villages Langley are excited about the help we receive from our customers and supporters, like the Girl Guides. And every year the participation of the Langley community with the school kits grows a little bit more,” she added. Ten Thousand Villages, which sells artisan-crafted accessories, home decor, and gift items from around the globe, ventured into the kits 15 years ago. This year’s program began Aug. 15, and will continue until Sept. 30. “It is time again for back to school shopping – an ideal time to share the excitement of learning with children in developing countries, who can only dream of new school supplies,” Nickel said. ‘Battle of Brookswood’ part of Cascades Clash by Troy Landreville
tlandreville@langleyadvance.com
Mat Andreatta and Beau Brooks are soft-spoken, mildmannered teenagers who plan on punching each other repeatedly in the face, head, and upper bodies Friday night. Personality-wise, there’s little separating the two super-featherweights highlighting Clash at the Cascades 3 at the Coast Hotel & Convention Centre. That’s because on first encounter, both appear humble and polite. When they get in the ring for their amateur boxing bout, all niceties will, and must, be escorted out the door. Andreatta, 16, has the edge in experience, but only just. Fighting out of the host City Boxing club, he owns a perfect 3-0 record. Brooks, 17, a product of Revolution Gym, will make his ring debut. The question for both boxers is obvious: what’s a nice guy like you doing in a rough sport like this? “I’ve always wanted to box since I was young,” Andreatta explained. “But I never really got around to it. I got into hockey and stuff. I just like coming here [to City Boxing’s gym] and working out. I just like being here.” Andreatta reflects on the night he entered the ring for his first official bout. “It was intimidating but it was probably one of the best feelings I’ve ever had,” he said. “It was the scariest thing of my life. I was just shadow boxing, and then they called me up. As I was walking to the ring, everything just went away. I felt like I was supposed to be there.” Even though they live in the same part of Langley, Andreatta and Brooks know little about
each other. “I’m facing a kid from my school,” Andreatta said, of Brooks. “I never really talked to him. I just know of him.” “I’ve seen him fight once, but I haven’t really seen him other than that,” Brooks remarked. “I’ll know when I get in there, I guess.” Andreatta said he’ll get a feel of what Brooks has to offer early on in the bout and then adjust his style accordingly. “For the first little bit of the first round I’ll see what he is doing and then try to counter...” Andreatta said. “I’ll just use my jab a lot and try to set that up.” If he gets hit with a good punch, Andreatta said he’ll just keep going forward, “because that’s what fighters do. You can’t really stop.” For his part, Brooks is excited about his first, likely leathery taste of competitive boxing. “The nerves will be there, but I’m looking forward to it,” he said. Brooks hopes Friday’s bout will be the first of many in his amateur career. “We’ll see how things go on Friday, I guess,” he said. The future foes shook hands and said a cordial, and of course, polite, “hello” prior to a promotional photo recently. The Andreatta/Brooks bout is

Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words I’m a small town B.C. guy – born and raised in Parksville on Vancouver Island. I began playing football while attending high school at Ballenas Secondary and because of my size I was a natural fit on the offensive line. In fact, I did so well that I was named my team’s Most Valuable Player in my senior season. Following my high school graduation, I had an opportunity to head south to continue my education and play football for the University of South Carolina in the NCAA’s Southeastern Conference, which features some of the most competitive college football in the United States. After playing four years on the Gamecocks’ offensive line, I had a newfound appreciation for my adopted home but was nonetheless excited to return to British Columbia to don the black and orange as the Lions’ first-round selection in the 2008 CFL draft. I’d seen firsthand what playing in front of some of the most passionate football fans is all about and I knew I’d see similar support from Lions fans back home in B.C. Now in my second season on the Leos’ offensive line, I feel privileged to come to work every day and play the game I love. Nothing would make me happier than to bring the Grey Cup home to British Columbia and share that experience with my family and friends. Through thick and thin, the guys on the offensive line have become family to me and I’m proud of the contributions we make on and off the field. As a kid who dreamed of playing professional football from a young age, I remember looking up to athletes for inspiration. For that reason, I enjoy taking part in the Lions’ community programs throughout the year, particularly the Terasen Gas Energy Champions initiative. It gives me a feeling of pride to give back to the local community and know that in some small way I could be having a positive influence on the younger generation.

Who’s got it? It was anybody’s ball as White Rock Titans receiver Silas Huizinga and Langley Cowboys defenders Nathan Warren (left) and Colten deJong jockeyed for position during an attempted pass attempt. The ball ended up in the hands of deJong, who made an impressive interception with his back to the play. The Cowboys/Titans clash was part of the Langley Golden Helmet Tournament at McLeod Athletic Park. The pre-season tourney ran Aug. 21-22 and featured teams from the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland in the flag, atom, peewee, junior bantam, bantam, and midget divisions.

attracted a lot of people,” he said. Allison said COMBSPORT has many advantages, including an improved scoring system. “We use the 20-point must system that had been used in amateur boxing until the late 1990s,” he said. “The computer scoring system is what is killing boxing, not MMA [Mixed Martial Arts] as most boxing people like to believe.” Former Canadian Olympian Dale Walters – who captured bronze in the bantamweight division at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles – will work as one of the referees. Darren Cooper and Gurpreet Buttar, both Langley residents, will be matched up on the card.

…continued from page A19 There is a lot at stake, says City Boxing trainer Dave Allison, who is promoting the show. “They are fighting for a B.C. [welterweight] championship,” Allison reported. Allison is amped up about the bout, the event, and boxing’s resurgence in Langley. “I have not enjoyed boxing this much since the 1990s,” he said. Part of the reason for amateur boxing’s recent surge in popularity locally, according to Allison, is its link to COMBSPORT (The British Columbia Combative Sports Association), which is sanctioning the card. “We are growing so fast it is unbelievable. Funeral Services
PRE-HST SAVINGS
EXTENDED
The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) came into effect on July 1st, increasing the cost of funerals by 7%. In many cases, this amounts to an increase of $500 or more. While we assisted hundreds of families with their pre-arrangements prior to the July 1st deadline, many others were unable to complete their plans before the HST became effective. By planning ahead you will: • Relieve your family of the emotional and financial burden an unplanned funeral can cause • Prevent emotional overspending • Lock in prices at today’s rates
We’re happy to announce we are extending the pre-HST savings – but only for a limited time.

Riding into late summer Lexie Graham enjoyed the sun and a ride on a springy hobby horse during the 14-monthold’s visit with her mom to Walnut Grove Community Park. The expected clouds and rain held off most of Saturday, and, along with a combination of sunshine and warm (but not hot) temperatures, made for a picture perfect summer day, which was good news for people out and about in Walnut Grove and other parts of the Lower Mainland during the first half of the weekend.
