Bill Holliday proudly carried a Canadian flag rich with history during Sunday’s unveiling of the new Langley Legion location. The Second World War veteran was among those who held the flag in Europe in 1995 for the 50th anniversary celebrations marking the end of the Second World War. Mists of rain fell on Holliday and parade participants as they marched west along 56th Avenue, from the Legion’s former location on Eastleigh Crescent. The parade was followed by speeches, a ribbon cutting involving the Legion’s oldest members Alex Myscouth and Mary Bruhaug, and refreshments inside the Legion’s new building. The local Legion has now moved to 20570 56th Ave., two blocks west of the site it had called home since ground broke in 1947. The flag was front and centre during the weekend ceremony, as it was from April 26 to May 10, 1995, when it was taken on a tour retracing the liberation route of the Canadian Forces in Northwest Europe during the Second World War. It is now in a display cabinet at the Langley Legion. Holliday has a long history with the local Legion, and with the military. Serving from 1944, the year before the Second World War ended, to 1948, he joined the British army at 18 years old. Holliday went through base training as an infantryman – a driver/gunner of an armoured fighting vehicle. He transferred to REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) and trained to recover armoured fighting vehicles. “My job was to pick stuff up from the front lines. I was take the flag with us,” Troy Landreville/Langley Advance the recovery guy,” he Holliday said. “We first told the Advance when Led by an RCMP cruiser, a parade of veteran and opened it up when we he was profiled in arrived in England, Legion members made their way along 56th Avenue 2006 [Concentration and after that we Sunday afternoon. camp witness caught the ferry from remembers]. “I would pull tanks out of Plymouth to D-Day.” ditches, or pull them off the road and out of The flag travelled through France, Belgium, the way. “The Navy guys held a service and laid a wreath on the ocean,” Holliday recalled. “It was quite emotional. Everybody got emotional, and were eager to see the places. The thing is, a lot of us were disappointed because we were looking for the places that are no longer there.” Holliday was in charge of the flag. He carried it himself, and then passed it on to others. “I carried the flag first,” he said. “Then after that I dedicated a good representative to carry the flag to every cemetery, every battle area… everywhere we had a parade, someone else carried that flag.” Holliday served as sergeant-at-arms for the Langley Legion for 20 years and is now going on 85 years of age. He said he was honoured to once again hold the flag high as he led the parade down 56th. “I was a bit wobbly on the feet,” he said. “But I survived it.”

Butorac back in court for third murder charge by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Convicted Aldergrove murderer Davey Mato Butorac’s next murder charge is moving slowly towards trial, with his next court appearance set for this Wednesday.

It

Butorac was convicted of two counts of second-degree murder last month in the deaths of Abbotsford’s Gwendolyn Jo Lawton, 46, and Langley’s Sheryl Lynn Koroll, 50 – both killed in 2007. He was subsequently charged with killing fellow Aldergrove resident Margaret

Redford, who was killed in May 2006. Her body was found dumped in Bertrand Creek. Butorac’s court appearance this week was to be intended as a bail hearing, but in the wake of his recent convictions, it is unlikely. The trial date for the Redford’s murder has not yet been scheduled.

Risk diminishes

Firefighters welcome weekend rain Residents can breathe a sigh of relief after weekend rains cleaned the air. by Matthew Claxton

081010

mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

An air quality warning has ended, and local firefighters are breathing a sigh of relief after a weekend of rain ended a long dry spell.

The air quality advisory was issued Wednesday, as much of the Lower Mainland was blanketed in a brownish haze, caused largely by forest fires raging in the Interior. People with breathing troubles were advised to be cautious and avoid strenuous activity outside for several days. The fires were linked to a weekslong period in which no rain fell and Langley’s parks and lawns turned tinder-dry.

Langley City and Township firefighters were pleased to see the return of the rain. Over the past two weeks, they have fought a number of small grass and bark mulch fires, most caused by people tossing smoldering cigarettes onto roadsides and medians. “It kept us hopping there for a couple of days, that’s for sure,” said assistant City fire chief Pete Methot. The rain will help things return to normal.

Ruling closes in on drinking line The conviction of Carol Berner last week for impaired driving that caused the death of a four-year-old girl in Delta should be a wake-up call to any drivers who still haven’t come to an understanding that any amount of drinking does not mix with driving. Berner’s case was notable, not only for the horrific loss of life and the unusual undercover investigation that led to charges, but also for how ordinary her decision to drive was that afternoon. Berner was on a familiar road, in her neighbourhood, when she slammed into the young girl. She hadn’t been pounding shooters at a bar, but drinking wine at home, admitting to undercover officers she’d had three “fair-sized” glasses. She failed a roadside screening but didn’t blow over the legal limit when she was tested at the police station. Experts guessed her blood-alcohol levels were between 0.063 and 0.117. In short, she was driving close to the legal line. But last week, a judge ruled Berner’s judgment was impaired that day and the unusual speed and recklessness with which she drove were clearly related to the wine she’d been drinking. It’s a judgment worth considering, especially in light of B.C.’s new drunkdriving laws which come into effect this fall, including much-tougher penalties for lower blood-alcohol levels. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has long argued for tougher penalties at the levels where serious fines and driving bans will now kick in, because research has shown it’s a level where driver reactions start to be significantly impacted. The message is: If you’ve been drinking, you don’t have to be falling-down drunk to be unfit to drive a car – or for there to be devastating consequences.

I have always subscribed to the concept that the BC Ferries belong to the people of B.C. and are, in fact, an extension of our highway system. There should be no preferential treatment of anyone travelling on them, just because they can pay an extra fee for a reservation and whistle by all the poor slobs waiting in the heat for hours. On a recent trip from Vancouver Island, we arrived at Duke Point (in mid-week, mind you, not weekend high traffic) 50 minutes before our selected sailing, only to be told we would have a “probable one-sailing wait.” When asked why, when there were clearly not enough cars and trucks there to fill a ferry, we were told that “the reservation system is still open, and will be until they have sold their allowable number of reservations.” The predictable result was that it was a definite one-sailing wait, and we had to wait another two and a half hours for

the next ferry, even though we had been there in plenty of time and the “reservations” people showed up at virtually the last minute. Sorry, people, but this is nothing but a bald-faced cash-grab! This is wrong, and it needs to stop. We own the ferries and should not be subjected to this sort of thing. Is anyone else angry about this? Everyone I spoke to at the ferry terminal was angry as hell. We don’t live in the sort of country where the wealthy get preferred treatment on public services, nor would we want to. Why is this being tolerated? Try calling up the Ministry of Highways and asking for a “reservation” for your preferred spot in your next rush-hour commute. See what happens. This is what we get when we take a perfectly good (if expensive) public service and hand it over to private operators.

Media coverage

Advance did an incredible job Dear Editor,

The Township of Langley 2010 BC Summer Games are over and were very successful, except for one thing: media coverage. Your newspaper did a very good job. But the provincial media: radio, television, and papers such as the Vancouver Sun and Province were a total failure. They apparently believed the Games were of interest to Langley only, and treated them as such. Their zero coverage approach to the BC Games was a total disgrace and an insult to the people of B.C. I trust the people in charge of the BC Summer Games noticed the very poor provincial media coverage and are taking action to ensure it will not happen again. This was a B.C. event held in Langley.

Mufford overpass

Farmland destruction is madness Dear Editor,

Agricultural Land Commissioners got an earful from the farmers of Langley at Cascades on July 22. They were told in

Pay It Forward

Scooterist thankful Dear Editor,

I was riding my scooter on 64th Avenue, just east of 200th Street, when I accidently drove off of the sidewalk. My scooter fell on its side, with me in it. Since I am unable to walk, I found myself in quite the pickle. Fortunately, several vehicles stopped, and four or five people righted my scooter and helped me get underway. I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to those people. I had been so embarrassed, because of my “wreckless scooting,” that I didn’t express it enough at the time.

very clear and direct words that the farmers unanimously did not want a four-lane highway through the farmland. Not one person spoke in favour of the proposed overpass plan for the Mufford Crescent and Glover Road intersection. The farmers have been treated in a very bad way, and are fed up with the way the entire affair has been handled, including the fact that they were only given a week’s notice to attend a meeting of such importance in their busiest season. When will these people understand? Other options must be explored, including a more long-term plan than the one presented. Hopefully the Township will listen, and the ALC will do the right thing: Put a stop to the madness of farmland destruction. There was a very bizarre aspect to the meeting, as the proponents of the new highway plan explained how they were going to attempt to deter the public from actually using the new highway, in order to minimize the negative affects. Cops for Cancer

Preparations for tour getting more intense

Gearing Up Matthew Claxton

mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

My biggest fear when I signed up to ride with the 2010 Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley was simple: could I keep up? At the first meeting for the tour, I was pretty worried. There was Ken Usipiuk, the team captain and a veteran of several tours. Ken has a shaved head and an intense “We’re going to get this done” attitude at all times. He always remembers, and can remind you, why the tour exists: to help kids with cancer. Ken bears a slight resemblance to Yul Brynner (think more The Magnificent Seven, less The King and I). There were Tim Anctil and Jillian Ewanyshyn, our team trainers, both of them veteran cyclists with thousands of kilometres and many hundreds of hours of riding time under

their belts. Tim works at the RCMP training centre in Chilliwack; I soon found he thinks nothing of riding up to 150 km in a day. Jillian works here in Langley and, among other duties, sometimes patrols on a bicycle. And there was Craig van Herk, another Langley Mountie who’s ridden in the tour many times, and is now one of the organizers. He helps train new bike cops around the Lower Mainland. I later saw him lean off a moving bike and pick up a credit card off flat asphalt. (Try this sometime, but please wear a helmet and gloves. I won’t be held responsible for injuries.) Was I expected to ride as well, as fast, as far as these guys? I was in trouble. One of the things we were asked at that first meeting was whether we’d done much riding. Around me, many of the Mounties and municipal

cops and Corrections officers had a lot of experience. Not only had more than half done the tour before, but others were avid mountain bikers, or rode to work regularly. Me? I’d once ridden a lot, but I hadn’t been on my bike for more than a year when I decided to do the Tour de Valley. Was I in good shape at all? Well, I’d had a lot of practice over the winter with the remote control and/or the video game controller. Yes, my thumbs were in peak condition, ready to leap into action and… press buttons. So I was pretty worried about being able to keep up with the other riders. Fortunately, I quickly found out that while every rider is expected to get in shape, we have plenty of help. I mentioned our team trainers, and training is a big part of the run up to the Tour de Valley. Every month since April, there has been a mandatory ride. The rides began out in Sumas Prairie, with a nice, relatively flat journey through the floodplains, a little more than 50 km. Every ride after that was a little longer, a little more challenging.

Those rides are not just about getting in shape for the big ride this September. They’re about putting together the team, teaching everyone to ride as a unit. There are also regular, weekly rides around Langley, Surrey, or Abbotsford. Those rides have helped haul my flabby carcass to being, well, slightly less flabby. More important, riding together cements the reason why we ride. We talk about upcoming fundraisers we’re working on. We invite one another to our pub nights. We went together to Camp Goodtimes, as I wrote last week – an experience that will stay with me forever. I no longer fear training. Now my only worry is how much more money I can raise. The team, and the kids at Camp Goodtimes, keep my eye on the goal. Ultimately, it’s not about the ride. The ride just exists to bring attention to the Canadian Cancer Society, and to the work it does with children with cancer. That’s worth putting in the miles. This year’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley runs Sept. 23 to Oct. 1., from Delta to Boston Bar.

Health care

Langley mom desperate for relief from MS Liberation

Lena Close feels her only option is a surgery in Costa Rica next month.

Lena Close and her family are trying to raise money to cover the costs of an MS treatment not available in Canada. The Closes are trying anything they can think of to bring in money for Lena’s treatment.

by Heather Colpitts

hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com

They have set up the website liberatelena. weebly.com which accepts donations through Paypal. There is also information on the site about a bank account for donations. The Brookswood family has also started a bottle drive and is looking for contributions. People can drop them off at the Langley Bottle Depot on Industrial Avenue. Tell the staff they are for the Lena Close Fund. The website also has ticket information for the upcoming pub night at the Fox and Fiddle. Tickets are $25 and the event, which will feature prizes, is Sept. 11. Up for grabs are a TV, Canucks tickets, gift baskets and more. On Sept. 12, they are having a bowlathon at the Alder Lanes in Aldergrove.

Heather Colpitts/Langley Advance

Lena Close is heading to Costa Rica for an MS procedure not available in Canada in the hope that it can help her get her life back. Her illness has meant extra burden on her children, Aaron, 15, Kyle, seven, and 10-year-old Julia, as well as her husband Rob. It’s a disease little understood and one that affects each patient differently. The diagnosis came 10 years ago but it’s been within the last five years that MS has really taken its toll. Doctors are stumped why Lena, with clean MRI tests and no family history of the disease, would be so incapacitated. “I have completely numb hands and feet,” she said. MS affects every part of her body, including causing severe fatigue, eye problems, breathing problems, and mental fog. Lena dreads the warm summer weather most people enjoy because heat is a trigger. Naturally, MS has made Lena and her loved ones experts on the disease. She’s learned what works for her – a strict diet and supplements, and no MS medications, which she said make

her worse. But the steps only help with the symptoms. She’s looking for a way to stop the disease’s progression and the internal damage the disease causes. That’s why she is heading to Costa Rica in September for liberation therapy, a procedure considered experimental in Canada. She and Rob are spending several days there while she has a small surgical balloon threaded up through her abdomen and into her carotid artery in the neck. The balloons will be inflated to stretch the blood vessels and increase flow to the rest of the body. It’s a procedure many Canadian patients are travelling abroad to obtain. The Close family is scrambling to raise $15,000 to cover the travel and medical costs, raising about $2,800 so far. They need to reach out

because the family finances are so stretched already. The medical establishment has labelled MS as an autoimmune disease and left its treatment to neurologists but she said the therapy that pushes open blood vessels in the neck shows there’s more to MS. “Neurologists took over the disease and said ‘it’s a nerve thing,’” she commented. In hindsight, she’s seeing how there is a vascular component to her MS. Flare-ups are tied to her monthly menstrual cycle and she found out estrogen helps make blood vessels more elastic. As well, heat makes blood vessels constrict, so she spends her life surrounded by fans because getting warm causes discomfort. Lena said a few years ago, stem cells were touted as the new cure and there have been

Rob Close, Lena’s husband, said they are accepting donations from businesses of prizes for these events. The family can be reached at liberate. lena@gmail.com or through the website.

other therapies, like bee stings, that have been hailed but she is confident in the blood vessel treatment because she’s seen it help so many fellow MS patients. The family will be filming Lena before and after surgery and plan to post the footage online. Lena noted that it costs about $25,000 annually for MS drugs but the government won’t pay the estimated $1,500 that this surgery would cost if done in this country. And she’s realistic about the outcome, knowing about half of the patients have their blood vessels re-constrict but said it’s still more economical to have to redo a surgery than just go with the costly drugs. “My hope is it stops the progression, that’s the biggest thing,” Lena said.

0810

Lena Close doesn’t dream big. The 34-year-old would like to have some fun with her kids, or go to a movie with her husband. Heck, some days she’d settle for just being able to get into her own laundry room. Multiple sclerosis is making her world smaller, one nerve ending at a time. Since January, when the Langley mother of three had a flare-up and had to spend a month in the hospital and another month in therapy, she’s been confined to a wheelchair. It’s not how Lena and her husband Rob, 36, imagined their lives. They had a young family and had laid down roots in Langley. Lena had grown up here and Rob had been here since childhood. She was a financial services advisor at a large insurance company. Then came the diagnosis a decade ago. Rob now works at a recycling depot and tries to run a computer repair business from their Langley City basement suite, needing the flexible work hours to care for Lena and the kids. Each summer, she suffers through the heat. “It’s to the point where I have to quit my jobs every summer,” he explained. After the birth of her second child, Lena noticed her leg was numb and it spread to her lower half. In recent years, she stopped going on outings with the family because of the difficulty of getting around, the extreme fatigue, difficulty swallowing, and the need for frequent bathroom trips. “I’ve said, it’s not just us in this marriage,” Lena commented. “We have MS in this marriage, there’s three of us.”

Day promotes keeping kids safe Whether on bikes, in cars, or at home, little ones should be safe in their own community. From safe car seats to DNA kits, Safer Communities Day is about kids and keeping them protected in Langley. Children will be having so much fun riding their bikes, eating hot dogs, and meeting police officers and firefighters on Saturday, Aug. 21 that they may not even realize their parents and the community are taking measures to keep them safe. The fifth annual Safer Communities Day is being presented by the Township of Langley, Langley RCMP, and Recreation Excellence at the George Preston Recreation Centre at 20699 42 Ave. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., youngsters are encouraged to bring their bikes and helmets and take part in a number of activities with their families and friends. “This is a chance for kids to come out and enjoy themselves while learning some valuable lessons,” said Township of Langley parks and rec programmer Barbara Jeffery. “Parents, too, will benefit from the day, which will provide them with information about how to keep their children out of harm’s way.” During Safer Communities Day, youngsters can participate in a bike obstacle course, have a free hot dog lunch supplied by the Langley Lions, and enter to win a bike prize donated by Cranky’s Bike Shop in Aldergrove. For parents, BCAA will offer child seat inspections and the Langley RCMP will provide identity theft and child DNA kits. ICBC will bring in vision goggles, and volunteers from Block Watch and members of the Township of Langley fire department will also be on hand.

A bike rodeo of sorts has proven incredibly popular at the annual Safer Communities Day event. This year’s will be held at the George Preston Recreation Centre on Saturday, Aug. 21.

Foundation golf tourney teeing off Hit a few balls down the fairways, help local students. That’s what drives the Langley School District Foundation’s fifth annual fundraising golf tournament, scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 25 at Redwoods Golf Course. As always, this very popular tournament includes a tailgate party, followed by a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. After-golf events feature a steak and salmon barbecue, prizes, a silent auction, and a live auction. This year the foundation is raising money to support bursary programs for schoolage students to allow them to participate in conferences, dual credit programs, sporting events, and educational

activities – programs that require extra funding from students in order to participate. “There are a number of conferences and other kinds of educational events that offer great learning opportunities for students, but they can be very expensive,” said Susan Cairns, the foundation’s executive director. “We want to be able to help students who qualify, to be able to attend such events.” Students can apply for funding, much like they would for post-secondary scholarships and bursaries. They can also apply for funding to help with the cost of tool kits for apprenticeship programs, sporting equipment, field trips, art supplies and other items required for educational programs. The foundation hopes to

raise $50,000 at this year’s tournament. Hole sponsorships and silent auction donations are needed to help them reach their goal. Entry fees are $175 per

Teen tears up track at Canada Summer Games Tom has been working with Chris to bring him back from an ankle injury, but also on helping Chris feel comfortable running in close quarters and positioning himself on the track in relation to his competition. Tom feels Chris’ strength is in the longer races. and sure enough, Chris had a great 800m race at the Games and was rewarded for all his hard work with a silver medal. ••• Paige Norton, also of Abbotsford, is only 16 but is already a force to be reckoned with as she tore up the track in London, winning medals in every event she ran, bringing home gold in the 200m and bronze medals in the 400m and 100m. Like Chris, Paige competes in several sports, and has collected some incredible experiences through her involvement with Special Olympics, both on and off the sports field. Most notably, Paige was a medal winner in short track speedskating for Team Canada at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in 2009 in Boise, Idaho. She was interviewed not only by TSN in Boise, but also by ABC Sports, and has shared the stage with Vancouver Canucks Willie Mitchell and Ryan Kesler, as well as former Canuck Michael Grabner at the Special Olympics Sports Celebrity fundraising event. Not bad for a 16-year-old.

ANGRIGNON, Gladys Emeline (nee Rennie)

Gladys, our dear Mom, born February 19, 1923 in New Westminster, BC passed away July 19, 2010 in Tsawwassen, BC. She was predeceased by her husband Albert Angrignon (2004), mother Grace, father William and siblings Gordon, Evangeline, Fred, and Seldon. Gladys is survived by her children Edmond (Barb), Eugene (Gail), Randolph (Jen), John Scott, Joan and Gordon; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family. She is also missed by her sister Mildred Walker and twin sister Irene Armstrong. Gladys attended Normal school in Vancouver and started teaching in Surrey in 1942. After her adventurous travels in the US and Bermuda with Irene and friends, Gladys married her first husband, John Bradshaw and lived in the US. Upon her return to BC, Gladys started teaching school at Aldergrove Elementary. There she met her second husband, Al Angrignon. The two teachers blended their families in 1955 and lived in Aldergrove for many years before moving to Langley in 1968. They had wonderful friends in both communities that they enjoyed sharing their lives with. Mom was actively involved in community activities including the Langley Lady Lions; Aldergrove and Sharon United Churches and school activities. She loved to travel, golf, play cards, garden, bake - the family has been missing her pies the last few years. The family would like to thank Mom’s many loyal friends, and the staff at both Langley Gardens and The Waterford in Tsawwassen, for their support and kindness over the last few years. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Sharon United Church, 48th Ave & 216th Street in Langley - on Friday, August 13th at 2:00 pm with a tea to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation www.heartandstroke.bc.ca or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

EXTENDED

The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) came into effect on July 1st, increasing the cost of funerals by 7%. In many cases, this amounts to an increase of $500 or more. While we assisted hundreds of families with their pre-arrangements prior to the July 1st deadline, many others were unable to complete their plans before the HST became effective. By planning ahead you will: • Relieve your family of the emotional and financial burden an unplanned funeral can cause • Prevent emotional overspending • Lock in prices at today’s rates

We’re happy to announce we are extending the pre-HST savings – but only for a limited time.

New Patients Welcome

th

Hello, hello Residents in Walnut Grove and Fort Langley would have seen some vintage visitors this weekend. The All Truimph Drive In took place in Langley this year. The car show devoted to the Truimph brand vehicles that were made in Great Britain takes place annually in either Washington State, Oregon, or the Lower Mainland. This was the first time Langley played host. The weekend opened with social activities in Walnut Grove before Saturday’s daytime car show and evening banquet at the Fort Langley National Historic Site, and Sunday’s wrap-up. The event, despite the typically British weather, brought out 102 vehicle entries from around B.C., Alberta, the U.S. Pacific Northwest and as far as southern California. Triumph Motor Co., currently owned by BMW, started making cars in 1921 and many of the vehicles on display were from decades past. Heather Colpitts/Langley Advance

M

ealtime was mostly a chore for Walter. Living alone, he would simply choose what was easiest to prepare and eat it in front of the TV. Nutrition was rarely a consideration.

At Chartwell, our chef changes the menu daily, so Walter not only gets to choose from a variety of balanced meals, but he enjoys them with a side dish of laughter and conversation.
