The bill seems straightforward: Langley Township committed to pouring $100,000 into the BC Summer Games. Not too expensive, for an event that will host more athletes than the recent Winter Olympics. But behind that are a host of upgrades and new sporting venues that will be here long after the athletes have packed up their medals and left town. Using an analogy given by a fellow BC Summer Games director, president Michael Jackstien compared the final days of preparation for the humongous sports event in Langley this week to an arcade game called Whack-A-Mole. Davey Mato Butorac will be headed to prison for two murders, and still faces trial on a third. A B.C. Supreme Court jury took less than five hours to find Butorac guilty of killing two sex-trade workers. The six-man, six-woman jury, sitting in New Westminster, came back with the verdict Thursday night. Butorac is convicted of two counts of second-degree murder in the 2007 deaths Gwendolyn Jo Lawton, 46, and Sheryl Lynn Koroll, 50. Lawton’s body was found on March 13, 2007, dumped over an embankment beside a rural road in Abbotsford. She had been beaten and strangled. Threeand-a-half months later, Koroll’s body was found in a Langley industrial park. She had died of a skull fracture. Blood and DNA in the trunk and on the passenger side of Butorac’s car were matched to Lawton and Koroll. Police from the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) are pleased with the verdict, team spokesperson Cpl. Dale Carr said. “We feel a great sense of relief for the community,” Carr said. He had spoken to Bill Lawton, the father of Gwendolyn, not long after the verdict was announced. “He was elated,” Carr said.
Family members of the two slain women had been coming to court regularly as the trial neared its conclusion, to watch the proceedings. IHIT members were also pleased at the conclusion to a lengthy and complex investigation. “A lot of times we have to deal with putting together a lot of small pieces to make a picture,” Carr said. That was true in this case, which was largely based on DNA evidence, tire tracks, shoe prints, and a few snippets of videotape showing Butorac’s car at the scene where Koroll was found. The police worked hard to protect the community for several weeks after Butorac was first identified as a suspect, near the end of 2007. Butorac was arrested, but had to be let go because there was no hard evidence at that time. “We were faced with the terrible thought of having to release him back into the community,” Carr said. While police waited for lab results, they shadowed Butorac 24 hours a day for several weeks. Langley and Surrey RCMP and members of the Sex Predator Observation Team worked surveillance. “The lab called people in to work around the clock,” Carr said. When the DNA matched, Butorac was arrested. Butorac is also charged with the second degree murder of Aldergrove resident Margaret Redford in 2006. Unlike the other victims, Redford was not a sex trade worker. She lived in downtown Aldergrove, not far from Butorac’s home.

Gang task force officers, backed up by the ERT and a police helicopter, raided a Walnut Grove home Friday morning, seeking guns and drugs. The officers found drugs, cash, and drug trafficking paraphernalia at the property in the 9000 block of 217th Street, said Const. Shinder Kirk of the Integrated Gang Task Force. Marijuana and cocaine, in
quantities too large to be for personal use, were uncovered, Kirk said. About $3,000 in cash was found. “No weapons, but 10 restricted or high capacity magazines for an assault rifle,” Kirk said. That has police worried that there’s a high powered weapon out there somewhere. The 25-year-old resident of the home was facing firearms possession charges from a previous investigation. His name has not yet been released. The man who lives there is not known as a member or ally of any one particular gang, Kirk said. But he has been seen by police in the company of various gang associates.
Because of the possibility of guns in the home, police were taking no chances Friday during the raid, using the ERT and having the Air One helicopter hovering overhead, Kirk said. Inside the open garage of the home, a newer model black BMW sat next to a large ATV. The house is a newer home on a small lot, backing up against the Redwoods Golf Course. Neighbours were aware of the man’s previous interactions with the law. “Everybody wants him out,” said one neighbour, who asked not to be named. They know the police have been watching the house for some time, the neighbour said.

Achievements beyond Games Dream. Challenge. Achieve. Not every one of the young athletes who will be showing their best form in the BC Summer Games being hosted by the Township of Langley this weekend will go on to become Olympians and Paralympians. Some may never again be involved in tournaments outside their home towns. But they all were able to dream. They were able to dream of being good enough to join some of B.C.’s top rising stars on the track, in the pool, on the field, on the court… and if they never have Diving an opportunity to cominto the pete at this level again, Games they are realizing those dreams this weekend. Dream, Challenge, Achieve Not every one of those young athletes will come away from this weekend’s challenges with a gold medal. Some will leave with no medals at all – just a lifetime worth of memories that they faced their challenges, met them head on, and did the best they could do. For some, meeting the challenge was the biggest thing they’ve done so far in their young lives – and for all, it will be a growing experience. Every one will achieve something. For some, their achievements this weekend will put them onto a road that leading to greater competition, perhaps at national or international levels. But for all of these youngsters, the BC Summer Games will help them achieve something bigger than the sports they are competing in – something bigger than the Games themselves. From this time forward, they will know that they can dream, that they can face a challenge, and that by doing so, they can achieve their dreams. – B.G.

Dear Editor, I was away for a few days and came home to the sad information that Township council had, in its not-soinfinite wisdom, deemed 52nd Avenue the desired route for a trunk water line to Aldergrove. So who exactly desires this route? Certainly not the 52 per cent who voted against it at the two open houses held last fall. If more than half are against something, it should not be done. Is that not why we elect these officials – to do what the public wants? This council seems to have its own agenda – that includes the development of the Salmon River Uplands area. Does urban sprawl have to cover all of Langley? What will entice visitors from the city to come to Langley, once all the farm and agricultural businesses have been eaten up by developers? Obviously, the bottom line is that this council is intent on depositing as much money into the Township coffers as possible – but at what price? Meanwhile, that poor soul might have gambled (played) away hundreds, if not thousands of dollars without any challenge at all. At the same time, they have increased the possibilities for gamblers (er, players) to give away the family rent, groceries, child care, and debt service money to the cash-starved and gambling-addicted government. There is no limit, apparently, to the depth of moral decay to which this government will sink. Their so-called leader claimed at one point to be absolutely against any increase in gambling of any sort. Apparently, that was then and this is now, under the new name… “playing.” This is playing with fire for the vast majority of gamblers who choose to play against the rigged electronic games run by the government of B.C. Their
2009-10 net revenues were $1.7 billion. Where do they think this money came from? Does Mr. Campbell see his educated and moneyed friends “playing” on-line? I don’t think so. They know better than to play those ridiculous odds. The “playing” that they promote is for the poor, hopeless, and mathematically challenged masses. And given the newly expanded limits, it’s also a fine way for organized crime to launder ill-gotten gains, right into the coffers of the B.C. government. Again, from where does the money come? Do they care? P.T. Barnum supposedly coined the adage, “There’s a sucker born every minute.” The B.C. government lives by it. Remember: “Know your limit… Play within it.” Wayne Boylan, Aldergrove

Honesty lacking in tax
Dear Editor, As if the tax itself were not odious, but to attach “harmonize” – a real misnomer – is blasphemous. Who is running the show, a barbershop quintet? This brings up a salient point: musicians, not politicians, should be running the show. At least musicians are all on the same page of the same score at the same time. Disagreements, personal differences and technical problems are resolved on the spot. Paid customers – the audience, or in this case the taxpayers – receive value for money. The HST was implemented without a word of protest from our intrepid MLAs, or if they thought it was a benefit in any way, their explanations would have been at least appreciated. Instead, we were fed false leads, such as, “The tax will be recovered by other benefits.” What other benefits? The tax gatherers are insidious and stoop so low that even dew worms are worth an extra 12 per cent. Twelve per cent of what? And pity the poor parents with a child who has a small appetite but big feet. Soon most parents will be singing the old Fats Waller song: “I hate ya cause yo feets too big,” as they shell out an extra 12 per cent for an ordinary pair of shoes deemed to be adult size – and also for one bun (a dozen buns are exempt). Then there are the poor souls who have delayed house renovations until the arrival of suitable weather, purchasers of other big ticket items, and travelers who could not get away before the exigency of the tax which the Liberal government was not going to introduce. All discover sadly that their budgeted amount will be substantially less than actual cost. Watch the underground economy and the barter system increase while jobs decrease. A fresh breeze of honesty and straight answers would be a luxury that taxpayers are not likely to witness in the near future. Lorne Hardy, Langley

Dear Editor, I have a company come by once a week to pick up my dog’s “business” because I can’t throw it in the garbage. My previous tax costs were $2.86 for eight weeks of service. Now, with HST, I’m taxed $6.86. Nothing has changed. The service is the same: come by every week, pick up a bag, and leave a new bag in the bucket. And yet I am paying an additional $4. Dear Editor, We now have 75 new games to “play” on-line, courtesy of our benevolent B.C. government, via the BC Lottery Corporation. Is there not enough poverty and misery in this province? There is, apparently, always room for more. And let’s be sure to call it by the right euphemism: “play.” Let’s not ever refer to it as “gambling,” because that might just conjure up a legitimate game of chance, as though that were what you’re “playing” here. They opened up the weekly limit of $120 to a new high of $9,999 last year, because they are sure we all want to “play” more. And the whole thing is now available through iPhones and Blackberries. They cut the funding to problem gambling programs by 34 per cent. The Self-Exclusion Program clearly does not work. A self-excluded person will be allowed into any casino repeatedly, without challenge, unless they actually win a major prize, when they will be told, “Sorry, we can’t give you the money – you’re selfexcluded.”

Since the Games board wanted to feature someone local in this special song, Games ceremonies co-director Magnusson hunted out a “talented young lady” she remembered who started voice lessons at the school at age nine, and who went on to represent the school at regional, provincial, and even national music festivals until she was 20. Desrosiers has been studying a combination of classical and contemporary music for more than 12 years, and just completed her fourth year of classical opera studies at the University of B.C. The young local singer released her self-titled solo album last year (at www.tiffanydesrosiers. com), and is currently a singer/performer with two classical crossover groups, Il Voce and Classical Nouveaux. “It’s been interesting that almost all of my musical connections have approached me from outside Langley, and I would very much welcome the opportunity to work with and be recognized by local people,” she said. Admittedly, the chance to work with Johnson was motivation enough for her to take on the project. But hearing the lyrics and music cinched Desrosiers’ decision. “I love how the title and lyrics totally tie into the Games because it’s all about dreams and motivation. I think there should be more songs written out there that are positive, uplifting and inspiring,” she said. Johnson seemed equally charged by the chance to work with Desrosiers. “I also had the absolute privilege to work with Tiffany Desrosiers, a soulful and highly competent vocalist. She is a native of Langley and I’m sure we will hear much more from her in the coming years,” Johnson said. Because We Dream was first performed by Desrosiers during the torchlighting ceremonies at the Langley Events Centre in April, and she will sing it again live at the opening and closing ceremonies. As well, this song will be available free for athletes to upload during the Games, and Desrosiers is hopeful this performance attracts some new fans – both young and old. “I consider every opportunity to perform an opportunity to create a fan base and have my voice heard,” she said.
“This song was written to inspire not only athletes, but everybody to pursue their ‘dreams’. It’s ‘because we dream’ that we take action to achieve… it’s the journey of pursuing the dream that is in and of itself sufficient to build strength of character. This can be applied to sports, music, whatever is worthy of dedication.” Doug Johnson

At the Summer Games Zone 3 trials June 9 in South Surrey, Ellenwood qualified first in the 200m hurdles, long jump, and high jump. She will also be a member of Zone 3’s 4 x 400m relay team. So, with this year’s track record in mind, Ellenwood is a legitimate medal contender at the Games. “I’ve been thinking about the Summer Games for a long time – since the beginning of the year,” Ellenwood said. ‘Umping’ passion for District 3 Chief
A North Langley Diamond Sports pioneer started out as a parent volunteer who simply wanted to make sure the kids had a chance to play. Howard Maisey, now Umpire In Chief with District 3 Baseball, offered to umpire a game one day in 1991, when North Langley Little League was still finding its feet. His daughter Trisha, now a 28year-old mom, was one of North Langley’s first players back in those days. She played North Langley Little League baseball until she was 14. “One of the things they always seemed to be short of was, there was no set umpire program in the first year, so they just pulled parents from the stands,” Maisey said. “So I ended up umpiring a lot of the games.
