May Day in Fort Langley holds dear to Olivia McKenzie’s heart. The Homelife Benchmark realtor and mother of two – fiveyear-old Anna and one-year-old Chase – busily inflated balloons to hand out to visitors prior to the 88th annual May Day parade Monday. the 1940s, and her grandfather worked as a realtor in the area in the 1970s. A lifelong Fort Langley resident, the 36-year-old McKenzie has never missed a May Day celebration at the village. “This is my hometown,” McKenzie said, “and this is a great event for the community that I’ve known my whole life. We do it as a family every year. This year we have three generations of our family watching the parade together. In the past we’ve had up to four generations.” McKenzie said her daughter was up at four o’clock Monday morning, in eager anticipation of the festivities. Noting that long-time Fort Langley residents are excited about seeing the parade restored to its original route, McKenzie said she will continue attending Fort Langley May Day parades and celebrations, “until I can’t go anymore.” This year’s parade route headed south from Mavis Avenue on Glover Road to 88th Avenue, then west to Trattle Street. The end of the parade brought visitors to Fort Langley Community Park, where the fun continued with traditional May Pole dancing, entertainment, rides, games, displays by community groups, and food.
