Local teachers are upset they can’t use the district’s head office lawn for get-togethers. by Heather Colpitts hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com

The Langley Teachers’ Association has taken a page from youth culture by having members call to find out the location of an event. When the teachers’ union was told it could not use Langley School District head office lawn for barbecues Monday and Tuesday evenings, the group put out word to its members that they could phone the union office at 3 p.m. on each day to find out the new location. LTA president Susan Fonseca said the LTA executive hosted the barbecues to give members a chance to get together with the executive. She noted that there are a lot of “anxious” teachers in local schools because of the district’s $14.1 million deficit. The original plan was to have

these events, dubbed Forensic Audit Barbecues, go 5-7 p.m. both nights. They were also open to the public. Food was by donation and the money and any remaining food was earmarked for the Langley Food Bank. The union sent out notice to members and was told the school district had administrators take the invitations off the notice boards. “We have filed a grievance today over that,” Fonseca noted. “In our collective agreement, we have a right to post notices.” The union was also told it could not use the outdoor space at the offices of the public school board without a permit. Fonseca said the union has held previous events on the site, pointing to the candlelight vigil and protests, and no permit was needed.

She said the union also argued it was using public space. “We’ve been told that they don’t consider that public property,” she said. “It’s property owned by the board.” Earlier Monday, the union received an email from a staff member noting that the district policy requires space to “We feel be booked like we’re at least 10 days prior to being the event. muzzled.” She said it’s part of Susan Fonseca a pattern and pointed to the eight teacher delegations on the agenda for the school board meeting tonight (April 27). School policy calls for delegations to address the board for a maximum of 10 minutes. The LTA was told that the board decided that they could only have five minutes. “We feel like we’re being muzzled,” she commented.

Langley teachers aren’t just being vocal locally. Their lunchtime rally outside the education minister’s constituency office took place last Friday even through the delegation arrived to find the office locked. The goal for the rally was to garner attention for what is happening in the community. The delegation of teachers and supporters did just that, getting honks from passing motorists and notice on news broadcasts. “Langley teachers want the minister to acknowledge that Langley students now have the highest per capita debt in the province, and want her to step in to order a forensic audit and prevent the proposed cuts of $6.6 million to much needed services to students for next year alone,” said Fonseca. She’s critical of the province for imposing a special advisor to the Vancouver School Board ($18 million shortfall) but not Langley’s, which has a $14.1 million shortfall. “Langley School District’s finances are the biggest mess in the province,” she commented.

A Langley mother is sending pieces of home to her son who is serving in the military in Afghanistan. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

It’s a long way from Afghanistan to Langley. But little bits and pieces of home are making their way around the world, from a mother to her son. One of Arlene Grant’s most recent packages went over very well. She sent her son, Pte. Dave Kirkness, a jar of mixed nuts from a Langley specialty store. The owner of the store wanted to know how his product was going over with the Canadian Forces soldiers stationed near Kabul. A little later, Grant got an email back from her son. Included was a picture of him holding an almost-empty canister. There would be no more photos of anyone with the nuts, it said. They were all gone. “Delicious,” the email finished. Grant passed the photo along to the store owner at Ultimate Seafood Junkies, who had it framed and put up on the wall immediately. For Grant, an ad sales rep at the Langley Advance, it was another in the string of packages and messages that have been going back and forth ever since Kirkness deployed to Afghanistan with the Princess Patricia’s C Company in October. He’s scheduled to come back on May 17. “We’re counting the days,” Grant said. To make her son’s stay in the hot, dry

country more tolerable, Grant has sent butter tarts, salmon and beef jerky, chocolate, and games. Every package has been followed by an email home from Kirkness. “That’s sort of been the real saving grace for everybody,” she said. Grant said she can’t imagine how families coped during earlier wars, when mail was slow and news could take weeks or months to make it from the front lines to the homefront. Now, every time she turns on her computer and sees another message from Kirkness, she knows he’s fine. She knows what danger he is in. The most recent Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan, Pte. Tyler Todd, was a friend of

Kirkness. He was the 142nd Canadian to die in Afghanistan since the war began in 2001. While Kirkness is expected to return home soon, Grant doesn’t know if he’ll go back. The Canadian military mission in Afghanistan is expected to conclude next year, but some families are calling for it to continue. Grant doesn’t know whether the mission should continue or not. “It’s a waste when you lose these young men, but to have it been in vain would be a real crime,” she said. Kirkness has been in the military for more than two years, and has already signed up for another three year term in the military. “It just sort of seemed to be his calling,” Grant said.

Fuel spill

Fuel leaks into creek in industrial area

A fuel spill has prompted an Environment Canada investigation on the Langley-Surrey border. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Environment Canada is investigating a spill of fuel into a tributary of Nicomekl Creek that took place on Friday. Oil or gasoline spilled into McLellan Creek, which flows south parallel to the Langley-Surrey border and joins the Nicomekl River near walking trails in High Knoll Park. Surrey Fire Department crews put two booms in place to stop the fuel from flowing farther downstream. One was placed in the 19400 block of 54th Avenue, off Production Way, and another was placed farther downstream. At the first boom, the smell of gasoline

Matthew Claxton/Langley Advance

Booms trapping spilled fuel were put in place on a tributary of the Nicomekl River on Friday. was still strong in the air on Monday morning, and pools of gas were trapped among rocks by the side of the creek. According to Langley City fire chief Bruce Dundas, City crews were called on the weekend to check upstream. They couldn’t find any trace of oil or fuel higher than the spot at 19400 and 54th Avenue. “Clearly, the leak was coming from the

Surrey side,” Dundas said. The source still isn’t clear. Environment Canada representatives contacted on Monday couldn’t say much about the spill. Responsibility for investigating it had apparently passed to them from Fisheries and Oceans Canada. At least one person believes the creek has been a target before. A home-made sign taped to a lamp post near the site of the spill says an unknown person or company is dumping toxins in the river. It encourages passerby to call either the City of Surrey or the Wilderness Committee if they spot anyone dumping there. However, the Wilderness Committee, an environmental group based in Vancouver, doesn’t know who put up the sign. The Wilderness Committee’s Joe Foy said the sign has been up for some time, but anyone who actually sees dumping would be better off calling the Ministry of the Environment to report the perpetrators.

New group aids disabled by Matthew Claxton

mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

A new society to aid and advocate for people with disabilities held its first meeting Monday, and is already making plans for a variety of services. Langley Pos-Abilities will try and put assistive devices in the hands of people who need them, said founder Zosia Ettenberg. An assistive device could be anything from a wheelchair or scooter to a walker or special computer. The society will

focus on adults, as there are already charities that help children. One of the problems with assistive devices is keeping them running, Ettenberg said. “Quite often people have devices, but they can’t maintain them,” she said. The first fundraiser for the society will be a fashion show, featuring both disabled and able-bodied models, on June 27 at 2 p.m. at the South Langley Church, at 22nd Avenue and 200th Street.

The statistics about RCMP volunteers in Langley are impressive enough, noted Supt. Derek Cooke. The commander of the Langley RCMP detachment said well over 200 volunteers spent 27,000 hours working last year. Their duties included staffing community police offices, co-ordinating Block Watch, warning drivers about auto theft risks, and patrolling as auxiliary officers. “Consider the impact of those 27,000 hours you give to the community,” Cooke said at Thursday night’s annual RCMP Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.

Held at Newlands, the gala featured RCMP officers in red serge sitting down with the volunteers. Both Langley mayors also thanked the volunteers for their many hours of work. The Township’s Mayor Rick Green called the community involvement with Langley’s RCMP amazing. “There is not a community in the Lower Mainland that can touch Langley for the quality of people and the number of volunteers,” he said. “There is not enough money in everybody’s collective pockets to pay for the work that you do or the value you bring to our community.” City Mayor Peter Fassbender was equally effusive. “You do it because you don’t expect anything back in return,” he said. “You do it because you love this community.”

Work together Langley’s teachers may have a point. The current superintendent of schools may be the worst thing that ever happened to Langley School District. Or maybe not. Maybe Cheryle Beaumont is doing a fine job, hampered only by circumstance. It’s hard to know for sure, until the local administration and school board have a debt-elimination plan vetted and approved by the Minister of Education. All anyone outside the inner circle really knows with reasonable certainty is that Langley School District is in a $14-million financial hole that was dug by a variety of methods, from simple accounting errors to changes in funding allotments. And we also know that, if the district’s children – you know, the people who are at the bottom of it all (but should be at the top) – are going to flourish in their education, the teachers will have to eventually start working alongside this superintendent or her successor. Right now, with protests in Victoria, nastily satirical barbecues, calls for Beaumont’s dismissal, and snide comments all around, teachers are building a history of distrust and ill feelings that will be difficult to set aside when the dust finally settles. And it won’t matter whether that dust settles under Beaumont’s feet or on her packed bags; teachers have alienated much of the school board and helped create an atmosphere of animosity that will linger for some time, no matter who sits in the superintendent’s chair. That there is something wrong in Langley School District is without question – if everything were right, there would be no massive deficit with which to contend. Like the teachers, we still can’t understand why the provincial government, which has already stepped in to deal with lesser situations in other districts, isn’t taking a direct interest in Langley. But for the kids’ sake, teachers need to work with, not against the superintendent. – B.G.

Education

School cash spent unwisely children. Instead of concentrating on a new, good, balanced funding model based on average district cost to run, they misguidedly charge ahead towards a model of cheap, overcrowded schools, yet they have no financial data or educational results to defend this plan, and data on crowded schools shows poor results. Until they start to think of the district as a whole, with equal educational opportunities/models for all, and accepting that some schools may cost a little more than others to run, we, as a district, are doomed. They are pinching pennies to save dollars they wasted – at the expense of our children. A district-wide, efficient model of equaleducation needs to replace their current mind set of unsubstantiated hack and close. The current district with a smattering of middle schools, buses, varying policies, varying procedures, and chaos throughout is far from efficient. Balance education, not cost per child. Do it efficiently to save dollars and fix the community. We cannot accept this from an MLAendorsed superintendent and those incumbent trustees who follow her recommendations blindly. It’s time for a forensic audit, accountability, and to get some real data to make some real plans for the future. Writer’s anger misguided Dear Editor, I found the letter from Susan Hansen rather rude [Complainer could seek office, April 16 Letters, Langley Advance]. She lives in a different world. Everyone does a tremendous amount of research before buying a home. Clearly, once we purchase one, we want our neighbourhood to be correct – much as she does. Often, plans change, and progress in a community is unforeseen, once you buy in. Woebegone any developer who decides to build anywhere near Ms. Hansen’s house – not in her backyard. As far as attending council meetings, I wish we had the time. Both my wife and I work full time, and by the time we get home and have dinner with our children, we are finished. It must be nice to have the time Ms. Hansen has to attend all of those meetings. She misses several points in her letter, too many to list here, other than to say that she was unfair to Mr. Standcumbe [Truck route intolerable, April 6 Letters, Langley Advance] in her inappropriate anger towards him. tions from 240th Street and 52nd Avenue. The majority of rainwater refilling the water table enters in this area. Development would interfere with rainwater infiltration (pavement and other hard surfaces cause runoff and dropping water tables under development areas such as Walnut Grove) and would make water quality worse. Those arguing for the Fraser Highway route fail to appreciate that that route is also the 248th Street route. The pipes would not go all the way out Fraser Highway to Aldergrove, because the pipes north of Aldergrove are too small to supply Gloucester. Instead, pipes would cut through the critical area going from Fraser Highway up 248th Street to Gloucester. With both the Fraser/ 248th route and the 52nd Avenue route cutting through the critical Strawberry Flats recharge area, risks are high. The 64th Avenue route is the only route that does not traverse the critical area. Dear Editor, Langley Township’s engineering staff made the best of a difficult situation by suggesting the 64th Avenue route for water pipes to Gloucester/Aldergrove. The 64th Avenue route is the least likely to cause development pressures and thus “collateral damage” to the Hopington aquifer and the Salmon River. The Hopington aquifer supplies water to the provincially important and still healthy Salmon River. However, water issues (dropping water table

Dear Editor, The blame game continues to shift while facts remain: more than $14 million in (MLA-endorsed) superintendent and incumbent trustee mistakes are about to be paid for by our children. Langley School District’s past board majority and superintendent chose to spend millions expanding and buying new “option” schools during a declining enrolment, yet we are told this is not the cause of neighbourhood school enrolment issues. They spent tens of millions while ignoring multiple delegations regarding financial concerns and ignoring pleas to seek further financial information first, yet we are told this is not the cause of school district financial issues. They assured us that the costs of reconfiguration were ridiculously low, as they also assured us extra funds and resources were available to make all the transitions smooth, yet now they lay the blame on reconfigured schools being given too much money. They invested $3 million they had to borrow into the Langley Events Centre, and agreed to some $37,000 a year in ongoing costs for this investment – money they didn’t and don’t have. They closed multiple schools, claiming huge cost savings, and now are closing another, despite the fact they cannot produce evidence of any savings, yet we are told crowded schools, portables, limited gym/ library time, and commutes are best for our

Auxiliaries join up Langley’s newest volunteer police officers have graduated from their six months of training. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

There are very few people who would willingly take on many of the duties of an RCMP officer on a volunteer basis. However, on Saturday 13 new Langley RCMP Auxiliary officers joined the ranks of the detachment’s volunteers. They completed six months of intensive weekend courses, in everything from legal theory and problem solving to the proper use of force. The new officers will be out on the streets soon, different from their full-time colleagues mainly in the absence of a yellow stripe on the legs of their uniform trousers, and the lack of a gun on the hip. The volunteers have decided to serve for a variety of reasons. “For me, it was a chance to get out from behind the desk and see the other side of policing,” said Allison Noth, a civilian RCMP employee. John Pilgrim, like many other auxiliaries before him, is hoping to one day join the regular force. The intensive training has brought them together, said Glynton Brittain. “We’re bonded together as a group,” Brittain said. “You know everyone has your back.” The group is also full of praise for their trainer, Jean Galvin. Galvin has shepherded numerous auxiliaries into their duties over the past few years, and has seen many of them go on to become full-fledged Mounties. That constant attrition means there are always openings for more auxiliaries in Langley. Galvin said overall, it’s good for the force, which gets new recruits who already have a good idea what they’re getting into. “They’re a pretty special group,” she said of the new crop of auxiliaries. The new volunteers will be on the streets of Langley starting this week, following their graduation ceremony.

Walk building With the 50th annual Langley Walk just around the corner, in 2012, organizers in Langley City and Township are hoping over the next two years to rekindle the enthusiasm that drew thousands of participants to each of the annual events through the 1960s and 1970s. While numbers of walkers dropped off sharply in the 1980s, the Walks have been rebuilding, and participation in the community exercise – and healthy exercise as a community is precisely what Walk founder Pete Swensson had in mind – has been growing. This year’s Langley Walk starts from Willoughby Community Park at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 2.

Looking back… Langley’s history, as recorded in the files of the Langley Advance.

Walkers break records Seventy Years Ago

APRIL 25, 1940

• The Lochiel Community Club called for tenders to clear and surface an acre of land at the corner of Biggar Road (224th Street) and North Bluff Road (16th Avenue). • Gracie Fields was starring in Shipyard Sally showing at the Langley Theatre.

Sixty Year Ago

APRIL 27, 1950

• Directors of Langley Memorial Hospital offered the hospital building to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, to be used as a provincial infirmary if the sale went through. The money raised would go towards building a joint hospital facility for Langley and Surrey.

Fifty Years Ago

APRIL 28, 1960

• Citing yet another fatal accident atop Hospital Hill, the Langley Memorial Hospital Society’s annual general meeting called for installation of traffic lights on the Trans-Canada Highway (Fraser Highway) in front of LMH.

Forty Years Ago

collecting dust and drawing electricity on standby mode. By taking it to the nearest Return-It location, you can keep it off your bill and out of the landfill. So start there, and move on to other basement dwellers if you feel so inclined.

APRIL 30, 1970

• Records broken at the annual Langley Walk included the number of people who started the trek, the number who finished, the fastest time, the number of adults taking part, and the range in ages of participants.

Thirty Years Ago

APRIL 30, 1980

• Lawyers started a trespass action against Langley City on behalf of a resident, be-

cause no right of way had been granted for part of the land council was attempting to expropriate from her. About a fifth of her property was being taken for uninterrupted access to sewer lines.

Twenty Years Ago

APRIL 25, 1990

• A group of about 30 people walked back and forth in the crosswalk at Mavis Avenue and Glover Road in Fort Langley, tying up traffic and trying tempers, in protest against gravel trucks that were routing their loads through the middle of the village.

Ten Years Ago

APRIL 25, 2000

• Township Mayor Kurt Alberts referred to TransLink’s vehicle levy as an $18-million tax grab, and called on citizens to either fight the levy or demand TransLink bring better road and transit services into the Langleys.

APRIL 28, 2000

• TransLink chair George Puil responded to Langley’s concerns about value for its transit tax dollars by saying Langley was getting plenty of service already, and that Vancouver would do better on its own anyway. • MLAs Rich Coleman of Fort Langley-Aldergrove and Lynn Stephens of Langley came out strongly against TransLink’s proposed $75per-vehicle levy. • Langley City taxes rose 3.9 per cent. • Canadian Alliance leadership hopeful Stockwell Day, backed by local MP Randy White, visited Langley.

’Cats 8s win Foss Shield

Olympians take home hardware A challenging three-day meet tested the swimmers’ collective mettle.

The Bobcats remained perfect in league play after toppling Aldergrove 36-10.

The Brookswood Secondary Bobcats will be awarded with the Marvin Foss Shield today (Tuesday) as the top Grade 8 boys rugby team in the district. They earned the shield after keeping their perfect league record intact on Tuesday, April 20, with a 36-10 win over the Aldergrove Totems. Aldergrove came out with a very determined effort in the first half and led 10-5 at the break. After some adjustments, the young ’Cats started to break through the strong Totems’ defence. Then, in the last 10 minutes of the game, Brookswood scored two late tries to seal the victory. Gavin Rowell led all try scorers with a trio of major scores, while adding three converts. Other try scorers for Brookswood were prop Sean Murray, centre Sukmir Bakhal, and scrum-half Taylor Vance. Standouts noted by the Brookswood coaches included Curtis Breitkreuz for his tremendous support play around the field and tackle count, and Lucas Paterson for his aggressive rucking and ball retention. The ’Cats cap league play today (Tuesday) versus Westview at Brookswood Secondary. Their first playoff game is Thursday against Abbotsford Collegiate. Junior boys rugby The Walnut Grove Gators – the Art Smith Shield winners as the top junior rugby team in Langley – took a bite out of the ’Cats by a 24-7 count Wednesday. Isaac White scored BSS’s lonely try while Dan Dejo made the convert. Last Monday, the host ’Cats fell to Abbotsford’s Robert Bateman. The local juniors started off strong and led 17-12 at one point. Try scorers included White, Dejo, and Mitch Olson. Chris Bauder added a pair of converts. In the second half, the Robert Bateman squad took over and scored 48 points. The next game for the BSS juniors was Monday versus Rick Hansen. Results were not available at press time. Senior girls rugby The “St. Bob’s” (Langley Secondary/ Brookswood) girls beat North Surrey 24-15. Their next home game is Thursday versus Burnsview. The team will be presented with the Gord Dennison Shield prior to the match. • More online, including a list of district shield winners, at: www.langleyadvance.com, click on “Sports”

Langley Olympians swim club members departed from the UBC Aquatic Centre in Vancouver with trophies in tow. The Olympians won the hardware at the annual Mies Shootman long course (50m pool) meet. Hosted by the Canadian Dolphins, the three-day event saw Olympians swimmers achieve best times and win lots of medals. Martha Metcalfe won the high point aggregate trophy in the 13-year-old girls category. She achieved this by placing first in the 400m IM, 200m IM, and 100m fly; second in the 800m freestyle, 200m fly, and 200m breaststroke; and third in the 400m freestyle. Duncan Gleed, 17, captured the Tommy Balabanov Trophy for the fastest 100m freestyle swim in the meet (54.66 seconds), breaking the meet record. Gleed also won the 50m fly in the 16 & over boys division. During the meet, he also placed second in 1500m freestyle, and third in 50m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke. Other meet records were broken by Hillary Metcalfe in the 12-year-old girls 50m breaststroke (37.34 seconds), and Morgan Mark in the 15-year-old girls 100m freestyle (1:00.62) and 100m fly (1:05.89). Other gold medal winners were: Devon Mark, 11, William Karpan, 11, Justin Schramm, 12, Trista Tetreault, 11, Rachelle Kichton, 17, and Jessie Gibson, 12. Silver medalists included: Trista Tetreault, Hillary Metcalfe, William Karpan, Morgan Mark, Justin Schramm, Rachelle Kichton, and 13-year-old Romina Worthington. Swimmers finishing in third place were: Romina Worthington, Rachelle Kichton, Trevor Voisey, 11, Hillary Metcalfe, Jessie Gibson, Justin Schramm, Hannah Weinkauf, 11, Liam Taylor, 11, Devon Mark, Chelsea Borrowdale, 10, and 14-year-old Brennan Taylor. Three swimmers qualified for the provincial championships in Kamloops this summer: Paige Dong 11, Kennedy Douglas, 11, and Chelsea Borrowdale, 10. Olympians head coach Brian Metcalfe said it was a very long meet, spread out over three days with heats and finals. “A meet like this one challenges all the athletes, but I was very pleased with all our swimmers’ performances,” Metcalfe said. “There was some excellent racing, rewarded with lots of best times and many medals.”

High school ice hockey

Girl battles for sr. spot

DREAM, CHALLENGE, ACHIEVE!

by Troy Landreville sports@langleyadvance.com

Kara Montgomery simply wants to play hockey for her school at the highest level. The Grade 11 student at Langley Secondary has run into roadblocks in her bid to play for the LSS Saints senior varsity ice hockey team. “I was told that the team was full,” Montgomery said. “When I said the sign-up hadn’t even occurred yet, they said there was a difference in ability.” Montgomery doesn’t agree. She has nine years experience playing organized female hockey. “The way it stands now is that if there was a Grade 11 or 12 guy who has never played the game, would like to try playing, and borrows equipment from a friend, he can play on the senior team, but because we are girls, we are not afforded the same opportunity,” Montgomery said. Montgomery was also told there were safety concerns. “So they said there was a difference in mass and that the guys are bigger than me,” she said. “And that I might get hurt.” Considering the local high school hockey league is non-contact, Montgomery believes she would fit in. LSS offers two levels of organized hockey: junior and senior varsity. Last year, female players were included on the junior team for the first time, according to LSS principal Dawne Tomlinson, who noted that the coaching staff responded to increasing interest in female hock-

Tryouts for Fraser Valley boys metro soccer players in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Langley, and Aldergrove begin Saturday at Willoughby Turf Field (behind R.E. aforementioned four youth soccer associations are eligible to compete for teams at the U18, U16, and U14 levels for the 2010/11 season, starting in September. There are two teams (A and B) in each age group and each includes the year below (for example: U15aged players – born in 1996 – can try out for next season’s U16 team). Langley United will play host to the Fraser Valley U14A, U16A and U18B teams while Abbotsford hosts the Fraser Valley U18A, U16B, and U14B

squads. Tryouts begin May 1 in Langley for the U16A, U14A and U18B squads. According to the Abbotsford Youth Soccer website, the Abbotsfordbased teams’ tryouts begin May 5 for U14, May 7 for U16, and May 11 for U18. Players must pre-register before trying out. Visit www.luysa.com for Langley-based tryouts and www.abbotsfordsoccer. com for information about the Abbotsford-based teams. Dates may change.

Paddlers test Games course Fort Langley Canoe Club athletes hope to compete on home water this July.

A new sport for Langley is off and paddling, and had its first official outing on the Salmon River near Fort Langley. Kayak and canoe slalom racing is an Olympic sport on white water river courses, and up-and-coming athletes start on easy low flow waterways like the Salmon River. The local course is about 100 metres long with about 20 gates through which each paddler navigates (sometimes upstream through the gates – sometimes downstream) at one-minute intervals. Each person does two runs with the best time used for the final score – somewhat like skiing and bobsled racing. This event was run by the Centre of Excellence White Water Club from Chilliwack, in conjunction with the Fort Langley Canoe Club (FLCC). More than 30 athletes took part in a

clinic, as they familiarized themselves with the boat properties and paddle strokes that help with manoeuvring through the gates. They worked with some of the Chilliwack club’s top white water athletes, who have had success in national and international events. Since Fort Langley is one of the sites for the B.C. Summer Games in July, this was an opportunity to get an introduction to slalom racing, particularly for those athletes aiming to compete at the upcoming Games. FLCC members did very well, with Brodie Muench winning the men’s U14 class. In the junior men’s class, FLCC dominated with Josh Plankeel taking top spot, as well as earning the title of overall fastest competitor of the day. In addition, Colton Muench finished second and Jordan Traas ended up third among junior men. The FLCC offers kayak programs for youth starting next month, and has spring and summer camps to learn water and boat safety, while generally having fun learning safe boating skills.

de France. McAdams said the Advance can help by getting the word out to the community at large. “We bring the community together,” McAdams said. When they learn about the size and scope of the Games – there will be more events taking place than at the recent Winter Olympics – they tend to get excited, McAdams said. He even coached a team at a B.C. Games once, taking a juvenille hockey team to a Winter Games in Osoyoos in 1985. “I remember the impact it had on the kids that were involved,” McAdams said.

Whitehouse has also been involved in several previous sporting events, including playoffs for men’s curling when they were hosted in Langley. Both McAdams and Whitehouse are putting a lot of hours into the work already, and that will only ramp up as the Games start date on July 22 approaches. Whitehouse is juggling her duties for the Chamber with her work as a Games volunteer, and said the support from Langley businesses is making it easier. “The Chamber has been very supportive,” she said. D L O G R O F H S A C R E V L I ANDHYSMAIL IT? COME IN AND GET

No matter how many records are broken when the B.C. Summer Games come to Langley, it won’t mean as much if there are no cheering crowds. The job of making sure everyone in Langley knows about the Games has fallen to Lynn Whitehouse and Ryan McAdams. Whitehouse, the longtime executive director of the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce, is heading up promotions for the Games. McAdams, publisher of the Langley Advance, is working closely with her to spread the word. Under promotions come a number of projects. Whitehouse has to find enough volunteer photographers to cover every medal ceremony, take team pictures, and capture the action on the fields and tracks. There’s a website to manage, a souvenier program to create, and sales of souveniers to oversee. “It’s horrendous!” Whitehouse said jokingly of the scale of the task. “But I have a good team,” she added. About 100 to 150 volunteers will be needed just for promotions, Whitehouse said. That’s out of a total 3,000 volunteers the Games are hoping to find. Key to getting the word out is letting people know what a high-level event the B.C. Summer Games are, say both McAdams and Whitehouse. “You look at the alumni that have come out of the B.C. Games, whether winter or summer,” McAdams said. Summer Games athletes go on to national, regional, and world championships, even such massive events as the Olympics or the Tour

Like puzzles? Then you'll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your Sudoku savvy to the test!

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

GASTROPUB

A Gastropub is a genuine old gathering place, that has been restored, yet retains the character of a traditional manor or pub. The furnishings are of the turn of the century, simple but comfortable and cozy. The food is modern European and traditional homegrown from local farmers, bakers, butchers and purveyors of goods, with a dash of elegant personal touches. The prices though, are moderate for the types of dishes being served. Please share in this love as well, as you enjoy our hospitality, your meal and beverages at the Baron’s Manor Pub.
