ing, the driver arrested, and a knife found inside. However, the man originally gave his name as Jordan Bourget, a 20-year-old Langley man. A fingerprint comparison three days later sorted out the suspect’s true identity. Bourget contacted the Langley Advance this week to say he was not in town when the offences occurred, and the Langley RCMP confirmed that he was not their suspect. “Langley RCMP regrets any inconvenience caused to Jordan Bourget as a result of the original media release,” said Marks. Smith is known to police, Marks said.

The man originally identified as a suspect in a strange series of threats and driving offences is innocent, Langley RCMP say. The man they arrested on April 16 had given a false name, and it took several days to sort out his identity, said Cpl. Holly Marks. The man has now been identified

by fingerprints as 19-year-old Jordan Joshua Smith, of no fixed address. Smith has been charged with assault with a weapon, dangerous driving, and uttering threats. Due to allegedly giving a false name, a charge of obstructing a police officer has been added to the list, Marks said. Smith was arrested after a man was threatened with a knife at a gas station at the corner of 72nd Avenue and 200th Street. The man with the knife left the scene in a U-Haul truck, later reported to the police for erratic driving on 96th Avenue. The truck was stopped near Rawlison Crescent at a train cross-

Numbers of those casting an early ballot in Langley are sharply up from the 2008 election. A total of 5,215 people cast votes at advance polls held over the Easter long weekend, a 42 per cent increase on three years ago. That’s on top of 915 who cast special ballots at the Elections Canada office, open for voters seven days a week during the campaign.

“It’s a good indication that there’s not much apathy out there,” said returning officer Patrick Lucier, who is coordinating Elections Canada’s work in the riding. Polls were open on Friday, Saturday, and Monday in Walnut Grove, Aldergrove, Brookswood, and at Langley Secondary. Lucier described the voting as steady, without long lines any time. Langley residents seem more keen on casting their ballot early than those in other parts of the country. Nationwide, advance polls were busy, with lines up to an hour and a half long reported in some ridings.

More than two million Canadians cast ballots during the three days of advance polling over the weekend, according to preliminary estimates from Elections Canada – a 34.5 per cent increase from 2008, when 1,528,780 Canadians voted in advance of election day. The Elections Canada office in Langley is located in unit 107, 6375 202nd St., just off 64th Avenue. It is where people can cast special ballots, or inquire about their voter registration. To register to vote, either government issued ID, or other non-photo ID plus proof of residence, or the confirmation of your identity by another registered voter is required.

He set the first walk at 28 km – seven kilometres longer than a half marathon. For the current walk, individuals, families, businesses, schools, teams and other organizations are all encouraged to take part. Trophies are given out in the following categories: • most walkers from an elementary school; • most walkers from a secondary school; • the oldest walker to participate; • most walkers from an organization; • most walkers from a family; and • most creatively dressed walker The walk will finish up at 3 p.m. at the George Preston Recreation Centre.

An Aldergrove man admitted to gun and drug offenses after a surprise witness switch. An alleged Red Scorpions gang member pleaded guilty Wednesday to drug and gun charges after his former girlfriend decided to testify against him. After delivering his opening statement on the first day of trial for Jason William Brown and Terra Lynn George in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster, prosecutor Peter Eccles stayed the charges against George and announced that she would be the Crown’s first witness. After a brief break, Brown changed his plea to guilty for two of the five charges he faced – the rest were stayed. Brown and George were charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime, and possessing a restricted firearm with ammunition. Brown faced an additional charge of possession of a firearm contrary to an order. In the fall of 2009 Abbotsford police searched Brown’s Aldergrove home and found two one-kilogram bricks of cocaine, two bags containing 26 grams of cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, $7,700 in Canadian currency, 9mm ammunition, a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and an eight-round magazine. Brown admitted to possessing cocaine and meth for the purpose of trafficking, and possessing a restricted firearm. A sentencing date will be set next week.

Fatal numbers Last year 95,000 workers were injured on the job in British Columbia. One hundred forty-three lost their lives at work. Those numbers are as reprehensible as they are astounding. Yesterday’s Day of Mourning, recognizing on-the-job fatalities in this province, across Canada, and around the world was an important recognition of those lost lives. It’s important to remember those who have died in the service of their communities – because, after all, that is what we all do when we go to work each day. Everyone with a job – whether a lawyer or construction worker, an accountant or a forklift driver, a politician or a fast food restaurant operator, airline pilot or auto mechanic – contributes to the local economy. Some serve the community more directly, in non-profit organizations, or toiling in public service as doctors and nurses, teachers and janitors, police officers and firefighters. Some of the jobs that support our communities throughout the province are more dangerous than others. Those police officers and firefighters, for instance, know from the get-go that there may be times when they’ll have to put their lives on the line to protect the rest of us. Despite improvements, some of B.C.’s most fundamental industries, like mining, fishing, lumber harvesting, and agriculture, continue to present serious threat of debilitating or fatal injuries to workers in the field. Special occasions like the Day of Mourning that was marked in many places throughout the world yesterday help to raise public awareness of the dangers, and consequently very likely will save some lives. But workers themselves need to be vigilant to the hazards around them, employers need to be mindful of their responsibilities to reduce hazards, and governments need to be more resourceful in establishing rules – and enforcing them – to ensure workers’ safety. It’s literally a matter of life and death. –B.G.

Vandalism starts in Ottawa

Dear Editor, Tanya Tait’s letter [Vandalism disheartens, April 22 Letters, Langley Advance] regarding vandalism to election signs, her lament at this flouting of democracy, and her thanks to Mark Warawa’s team of supporters for “working in the rain, hail, and cold to repair and replace damaged signs to the best of their ability” rings slightly hollow. These awful acts of savaging signage come with more recent campaigns, a sign of our times. Compare Langley signage savagery with Conservative conduct in Ottawa, and which is worse? Two Conservatives charged with breaking the law on campaign finance limits, the Bev Oda “not” affair, hiding of information about the cost of government programs, found in contempt of Parliament after a minister lied to the House of Commons Committee (a reported first for any western democratic nation), and there’s more. I wouldn’t brave our inclement weather to re-elect any party with this record, not on a sunny day. Larri Woodrow, Walnut Grove

Numbers thousand times off

Dear Editor, I’m sure I’m not the first to notice or mention this, but the letter from J. Evanochko [Economy relies on votes, April 26 Letters, Langley Advance] contained some very serious numerical errors. Whether a typo (times three) or an error on the writer’s part, the figures of $13 million, $55 million, and $65 million should have read $13 billion, $55 billion and $65 billion – 1,000 times more than the figures in the letter. national parties agree that the federal government has an important, ongoing role to play in our cities and communities. The parties have committed to develop a long-term infrastructure plan that builds on recent investments in municipal roads, bridges, water systems and public transit. Check out FCM’s election website at www.fcm. ca/election2011/index. asp for party leader videos that speak about the future of the federal-municipal partnership and the issues affecting our cities and communities. As well, the website provides FCM’s detailed assessment of each party’s platform commitments to municipalities. I encourage you to set aside a few minutes to watch the videos and read the platform assessments. Then send an email, a tweet, or a Facebook message to your community, with a link to the FCM election website. (If you spread the word on Twitter, include @FCM_ online, so FCM can retweet your messages.) I urge you to get out and vote. Canada needs its next Parliament to make communities a priority, and take practical action to meet growing challenges on local streets. Parliament needs to hear from voters like yourself that these issues matter. Bob Long, Councillor, Township of Langley

Township council

Budget council responsibility

Dear Editor, Your article [Tax increase passes council, April 22, Langley Advance] raises concerns that the mayor has abdicated his responsibility to be actively engaged in the budgeting process that is so important to the taxpayers of the Township of Langley. The Township, incorporated as a municipality in 1873, is one of B.C.’s oldest. A primary reason for incorporating is to provide a responsible local government. The council, of which the mayor is part of, is entrusted by the taxpayers to provide a budget and set the tax rate. The mayor chose to sit this budget out by not contributing any constructive ideas to help reduce taxes. Calling the budget a “staff budget” is a clever way of blaming our hardworking civic employees whose task is to provide the budget to council for revisions. The budget is a council budget, and as such it is council who provide direction to staff. Simply saying that he “agrees to disagree” is not good enough. We expect the

TODAY’S FLYERS... in the Call 604-534-8641 for delivery info.

mayor to provide leadership and contribute to creating a responsible budget. Whether the mayor likes it or not, he entered office in the midst of the five-year Township of Langley financial plan, initiated in 2007. Amongst other items, the plan allowed for increased public safety by adding police officers and transitioning to full-time firefighters. These costs are due now. By voting against the budget, the mayor has ignored our need for increased safety. This is no different from any household planning to purchase a car or go on vacation without a solution to pay for it. I encourage the men and women who live and work in the Township of Langley to observe what the mayor is doing to our future. He appears to be more interested in gaining votes in November than doing what is right for the Township. Jack Froese, Langley [Editor’s note: Mr. Froese has indicated that he intends to run for Township mayor in the November civic elections.]

RCMP

Rescuers recognized for helping hand

by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

A single incident led to five people – three civilians and two Langley RCMP officers – being recognized for helping save a life. On Nov. 19, 2009, Sabray Cadman was driving through Langley on her way to an important event – the upcoming birth of a grandchild. Insp. Amrik Virk said Cadman stopped her car and called the RCMP to report a man who was clinging to the outside of the railing on the 208th Street overpass. The distraught man was threatening to jump. While Cadman talked to him, Daryl Hiebert and David Harris, working for

Matthew Claxton/Langley Advance

Three police officers and three citizens were given certificates of appreciation by the RCMP. Main Road Contracting, passed on the highway. They turned their vehicle to block traffic under the overpass. Harris also tried talking to the man, while Hiebert kept police updated on the situation. The first two officers on the scene were Const. Nicolas Ruegg and Const. Kevin Gilderdale, who slowly moved closer to the man, trying to engage him

in conversation. They finally had his trust enough that he asked for a cigarette. When he leaned forward on the rail to get a light, the two Mounties grabbed him and pulled him to safety. The man was later checked out by mental health professionals. He has since thanked those who saved his life, Virk said. It was an unusual day

for both the civilians and the RCMP officers, Virk noted. “We don’t rescue people off of ledges every day,” he said. A sixth certificate of appreciation was given to Sgt. Ravinder Pawar for an incident on June 20, 2009, when he was serving in Surrey. Pawar was called to a home by an interrupted 911 call. He found that a man had broken into his girlfriend’s house, attacked her, and then barricaded himself inside. The frantic girlfriend said her child was still inside. Pawar, along with other officers, found the child unharmed, then turned their attention to the man. He was wielding a knife and was trying to choke himself with a cord. The officers managed to get the knife away from him, then got him medical attention.

Cell calls an issue for substitute teachers

TOCs are concerned about answering their cellphones while driving, to get work. by Heather Colpitts

hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com

Teachers on call are asking for the Langley School District to changes its automated dispatch system in the

name of safety. The district has for several years had an automated system that starts calling substitute teachers based on a specific rotation. The teachers must use the phone keypad to enter information about whether they can accept the job. That means teachers on call must answer the phone or lose out on work, but there are laws against driving and using cell phones.

The Langley Teachers’ Association Teacher on Call chair said it’s a safety concern for local teachers on call. “We are dedicated to our jobs, so risk the daily fines,” said Antonia Tsiolas. She asked the district to upgrade to a voice-based system or to hire staff to handle dispatching. She said TOCs being able to get jobs is even more vital with the reduction of the school calendar by six days.

Corix, the water company that has built equipment in Langley for years, is expanding into a new facility. The new 80,000 square foot facility will be built in the Gateway 200 Business Park, on 200th St. near the interchange with the Trans Canada Highway. It will allow Corix to move workers from its existing plants in Langley City and Abbotsford, along with employees from its offices in Cloverdale to one location, said Corix VP Jack Touhey. There will be about 160 people working on the site when it is completed. Construction is expected to wrap up late this fall or early in the winter, with the first few employees moving in around November or December, and the full complement on hand by January. Corix has long used its existing Langley plant to build water filtration systems. In 2007, it was hard at work creating a new system for the Vancouver Island community of Tofino. After suffering through a widely publicized water shortage earlier in the decade, Tofino needed a new source of water. The government there turned to Corix to create a water filtration system that would take water from a local river – water that was green with living things – and turn it into clear, clean potable water.

Corix is planning to bring all its operations from Langley City, Surrey, and Abbotsford to one location at a new plant in Langley Township. This illustration shows what the building will look like when completed. The systems Corix builds can be fully assembled in its own factory and then shipped around the world. That makes it a good fit for small to medium sized communities, Touhey said. While most of their product is sent to North American customers, they also ship overseas. “We just supplied three plants into Ireland,” Touhey said. The large water filtration plants are

Rents going up for industry Langley and its neighbours are expecting a good year for industrial land values. by Brian Morton

Growing confidence in the Fraser Valley’s industrial real estate market adds up to ‘robust’ growth in the sector this year, according to a report released recently.

The report, which looked at Abbotsford, Surrey, Langley, and Chilliwack, concluded that while rent levels throughout the Fraser Valley industrial zones are starting to rise, overall vacancy levels continue to decline. Indicative of the activity is a major new industrial park in Pitt Meadows that its developers say will eventually be the second-largest industrial park in the province, after Richmond’s Kingswood Industrial Park.

There seems to be a lot happening within the business community of Langley this month to help out some incredibly worthy causes. I’d like to start by pointing to a shred event being held at Vancity Credit Union’s Langley location on Saturday. They’re hosting the event as a fundraiser, hoping to raise decent coin for the Maple Discovery Gardens. The Shredathon runs Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the branch at the cor-

And speaking of benefit events, M&M Meat Shops is gearing up for its 23rd annual Charity BBQ Day, being held at 465 locations across Canada, including the branch (not far from Vancity) on 200th Street and the Langley Bypass. The beneficiaries, in this case of this charity event, is the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada. The goal, company wide, is to raise about $1.6 million this year just by flipping burgers and hot dogs. Over the past 22 years, M&Ms has raised in excess of $20 million for medical research into the inflammatory bowel disease. There are more than 200,000 Canadians suffering with IBD, and no known cause or cure yet, so hats off to the local store owners for pitching in and trying to end the problem.

Ice cream scooping

Haven’t heard the results yet, but I’m hopeful the fundraiser at Baskin Robbins on Wednesday went well. Another cool fundraiser, pun intended. Baskin Robbins Canada and our local team at the store off Willowbrook Drive got all fired up – again, pun intended – to support the nation’s fallen firefighters. For five hours that night, the staff sold 31-cent scoops of ice cream to clamouring fans. Aptly named 31¢ Scoop Night, the money raised from the one-night fundraiser seems like a commendable way to pay tribute to our nation’s fallen firefighting heroes and raise funds for the families they’ve left behind. The CFFF strives to remember fallen firefighters through memorials,

honour fallen firefighters by managing the Canadian Firefighters Annual Memorial Ceremony, and financially support the families of fallen firefighters with the CFFF National Scholarship and Bursary Endowment Fund. Online donations to support CFFF can also be made by the public at the site.

Showing Mom love

IGA MarketPlace, which we have a few of still in Langley (despite the loss of Fort Langley’s store), is holding a special little campaign aimed at fundriasing for the BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre Foundation. The four-week promotion, called Bunches of Love, leading up to Mother’s Day next weekend sees $2 from every $14.99 bouquet of flowers sold going to the charity of choice.

Boost for Special O

Throughout April, the hardworking employees in Canada Safeway stores around the country are helping to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics through the Families Living with Disabilities campaign, which supports Special Olympics BC and Easter Seals. Initiated in 2009, the campaign raises funds and awareness for families living with disabilities. Since its inception, the campaign has raised $700,000 for Special O programs across Canada. Last year, the fundraising raised more than $400,000 in support of Special Olympics Canada, and of that, more than $120,000 was from B.C. From March 31 to May 1, staff in stores across all of Canada have been asking customers to donate $2 to the cause. Staff also hosted fundraising events such as barbecues, bake sales, and in-store raffles. And for every person who “likes” the Canada Safeway Facebook page this month, the Canada Safeway Foundation will donate $1 to Special Olympics and Easter Seals.

Record career is like a fairy tale for home builder

by Troy Landreville tlandreville@langleyadvance.com

M

urrayville folk musician Tim Lindberg has gone solo – with a little help from his friends. After six years with the local group Doubting Paris, Lindberg and his former bandmates amicably parted ways. Lindberg’s first solo record could be described this way: if the music of Counting Crows and Shawn Mullins produced a child, out would come Love Songs for the Weary Traveller. “It’s definitely got hints of classic rock and roll, but it’s on the lighter side, more ‘folkier’ side of it,” he said. Lindberg is a retro kind of guy. He drives a original mint green 1960 Chevrolet Bel Air and his radio dial has been stuck on the “oldies” station for the two years and counting. “The trendy music, I’ll touch on it, but it never seems to last,” he said. “A lot of the music that comes in fads and waves, it seems it doesn’t have that same timeless quality and nostalgia that a lot of the music from the ’50s and the ’70s.” In those days, the songwriting ability was so much stronger than it is today, Lindberg noted, which is why, when writing Love Songs, much of content was influenced by the classic rock genre. Lindberg adoration for music comes from hands-on experience. Once he started playing it, he found his passion. “I fell into it [music] than trying to make it happen,” he said. “I loved it and just kept doing it, you know?” His solo album “just felt right,” Lindberg

said: “It’s probably the most natural I’ve felt with music.” Two musicians who played on his solo album (released back on Nov. 9) are from the aforementioned Doubting Paris: electric guitarist Zaac Pick and drummer Jay Stewart. “We’re still friends; we still play music together,” Lindberg said. He balances music with another passion of his, building homes with business partner Daniel Huscroft through their company Lindcroft Custom Dwellings. “We build fairy-tale homes like cottages and tree-houses and things,” he explained. A fellow musician, Huscroft also played

electric guitar on Lindberg’s solo effort. “We build when we get a chance, and we play when we get a chance…” Lindberg said. “It’s extremely difficult to do, in theory, but I have an extremely gracious and supportive wife – and two kids who are too young to tell me otherwise.” Lindberg is dad to two-year-old Judah and nine-month-old daughter Willow. On first encounter, Lindberg noted, Judah usually asks people, “Are you a rocker star?” “All my friends are in the industry so he [Judah] thinks everybody has a CD and is a ‘rocker star,’” Lindberg said with a chuckle. Lindberg’s wife Raven played a crucial role when he per-

formed in a pair of Canadian showcases at the South By South West music festival in Austin, Texas. “We were there for a week and she came with me. She did a lot of the PR and management work,” Lindberg said. “We’re a team, right? When I’m doing music stuff she’s excited. She’s part of it.” At one of the largest music festivals in the United States, Lindberg, Huscroft, Pick, and Ryan McAllister played in front of audiences ranging from 600 to and 1,000-plus people. Stewart was the drummer for all four acts. “The four of us all have solo records and we all played in each other’s sets, and that was how it was,” Lindberg said. “It was really neat to be in a big United States showcase, having this ‘Canadian club’ for a couple nights.” Performing in front of hundreds upon hundreds was quite a culture shock for an artist who often plays in cafes and clubs. While with Doubting Paris, Lindberg’s also jammed on acoustic guitar for an intimate audience of one: Raven. “Local shows are like between 75 and 250 [people],” Lindberg said. “I would do a cafe here for 70 people but downtown at a club for 200.” Lindberg said 13,000 acts performed over the course of the five-day festival. “It was insane,” he said. “It’s the Olympics for music!” A return trip south of the border is in the cards for Lindberg, who is busily trying to book a college tour in the U.S. He also hopes to market Love Songs through film and television. “I have a couple of companies that are shopping the record for that,” he said. “And really, just the love of playing – I want to keep playing live because that’s where the joy is.” He has an ambitious goal of putting out a record every year-anda-half. “This one just came out three months ago and I already have about half of a record ready,” he said. light attendant Jeannette Cooper travels the world, her life a constant adventure. Despite her endless travel, this Milner resident is always glad to come home. And never more so than last week, when – still jetlagged from a trip to Korea, Cooper learned she was the winner of an adventure package for her own backyard. A few months ago, the Langley Advance invited its readers to help kick off a new feature in the paper, called Advance Travellers. They were asked to take copies of their newspaper with them on trips to exotic destinations, then take a picture of themselves and send the high-resolution colour jpegs, along with some details, in to the newspaper via email: travellers@langleyadvance.com. The response was terrific, and readers are continuing to share their vacation pictures, which we’re in turn publishing in our print and online editions, said editor Bob Groeneveld. During the launch, the Advance held a contest, offering a surprise adventure package. And now, thanks to the support of countless local organizations and businesses, this faithful reader has came out a winner. Cooper took home an adventure package that includes gift cards and

admission packages to a variety of places: including the Bedford House, Fort Langley National Historic Site, The Redwoods Golf Course, the BC Renaissance Festival, Saje, Choo-Choo’s restaurant, Frostings Cupcakery, Langley Centennial Museum, Langley Playhouse, Township of Langley recreation facilities, Aldor Acres, the Canadian Museum of Flight and Bistro Restaurant, and the Langley Community Music School. “I just want to thank you and the Langley Advance for randomly picking me as your winner for the Advance Traveller contest,” Cooper said. “I just love the prize package! Can’t wait to use the dinner gift cards plus see a few plays. There are so many things to do that I don’t know where to start. I’m going to be busy right up until we pick our pumpkins at Aldor Acres.” Overwhelmed by the prize, Cooper added: “As you know, my job as a

Langley Rotary Club has come up with an early Mother’s Day gift idea that guarantees to earn beaucoup brownie points for any gifter. Langley Sunrise Rotary Club is presenting an all new Taste of Fort Langley on Tuesday night, giving people a chance to explore the birthplace of B.C. while also sample some of the historic village’s tastiest cuisine. Rotarians will guide dinner guests to the “finest dining that Fort Langley has to offer,” taking them from one restaurant to another, said founder and organizer Tom Louie. By the end of the evening, participants will have savoured a full-course meal, complete with dessert. “How the event works is that guests are organized into groups. Each group visits a restaurant for a set amount of time and served a specific course,” Louie explained,

roughly 45 minutes at each restaurant, with a 15-minute lapse in between to walk to the next restaurant – all within walking distance of each other. “The first restaurant that a group visits serves an appetizer; the second restaurant that the group visits serves a salad, and by the time the group reaches their final destination, they will enjoy a featured dessert,” Louie elaborated. Participating restaurants include Village Tea & Coffee Company, Beatniks Bistro, Tracycakes Bakery Cafe, Fort Neighbourhood Pub, and the Full Barrel Cafe – which is within the walls of the Fort Langley National Historic Site. “The concept of restaurant hopping has proven to be very successful in White Rock,” Louie said. “We recognized this as an opportunity to import a good idea to Langley.” It’s hoped this will grow into one of the club’s largest annual events. Rotary continues to fundraiser for countless local and international causes. The dinner circuit starts at 5 p.m. and runs until 10 p.m. Tickets are $45 and must be purchased in advance at 778-298-7790.

celebration with roots back to 1862 has come to Langley. The second annual Cinco de Mayo festivities are April 30 and will be a fundraiser for the Langley International Festival. Cinco de Mayo is a holiday held on May 5 that commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It is celebrated in parts of Mexico and the United States, and has evolved in the U.S. to be a celebration of Mexican heritage and culture. Langley’s celebration in the Douglas Recreation Centre will be a flurry of dance, food, music and fun, organizers promise. “We encourage the public if they have Mexican outfits, to dress up,” said Maria Hillmer, with the international festival.

The band will perform for the start of the 49th annual Langley Walk on May 1, providing a fanfare at about 12:25 p.m., and has a concert at the Rose Gellert Hall on May 4. When the band visits, it’s R.E. Mountain Secondary handling the plans. Through the program Jeunesses Musicales Canada, the REM School Jazz Trombone Committee is looking after all the logistics. The Jeunesses program is in partnership with Canadian Heritage and intended to promote classical music to young Canadians. “They will also be at R.E. Langley Elks bring a taste of Hawaii to Brookswood Pig roast raises money for community projects.

T

he Langley Elks Club is giving people an excuse to drag their Hawaiian garb out of the closet as the club hosts the 11th annual Pig Roast this Saturday. As people arrive at the George Preston Recreation Centre, they will be greeted by the aroma of the pork roasting outside the centre. “Our event is successful due to consistancy in good food, good music and lots of fun,” said Barb Gee, club publicity director. “Most people come every year, some from the Okanagan Valley, Kamloops and across the Lower Mainland.” Proceeds from the pig roast goes to Elks charities. Many of the Elk causes help children, including the BC Family

Hearing Centre for speech and language therapy for children, scholarships, Cadets and Elks Camps. “We are greatly involved in the community with: Canada Day, International Festival, Christmas in Williams Park, and the Abbotsford Airshow,” Gee said. People will enjoy dancing to the Haywirers. There are

also draws, prizes and auctions for things such as games, baskets, gift certificates and more. Tickets, $25, are only available in advance. Families are welcome but each person must have a ticket. For tickets contact Barb and Gary Gee, 604-889-1160; Dave and Deb Sallenback, 604-856-3559; or Steve Clark, 604-746-2205.

Performing arts

Finals go Saturday The top 15 acts are on stage this weekend.

L

angley Has Talent has secured a longtime Canadian talent as one of the judges for this Saturday’s finals. Susan Jacks, the popular singer with the Poppy Family in the 1960s and ‘70s, joins Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender and talent company owner Lissa Lloyd. They have the unenviable task of selecting the winners from the 15 acts chosen in the semifinals April 16. More talent has been added to entertain the audience while the judges do their work Saturday evening at the Christian Life Assembly. “There are special performances by Aaron Prichett, Langley’s country music star and Cliff Prang, a local comic,” said Peter Luongo, event chair. This first ever Langley Has Talent contest has been organized by four Rotary Clubs of Langley to raise awareness of the need for a performing arts facility in this community and to raise funds for it. The finals will result in the one act receiving the top prize of $2,500 while the second and third place winners receives $250. There are also promotional packages for the winners. Tickets are $20 each and available through the website www.langleyhastalent.com.

14. Do you support a woman’s right to obtain an abortion as currently legislated?

Federal election 2011

25 Questions

Langley candidates in the May 2 federal general election was offered an opportunity to expand on their yes/no responses (page A3). Here are three answers from:

Mark Warawa Conservative Party 4. Should for-profit options be part of the public health care system?

A Conservative government believes that all Canadians should have access to publicly funded health care under the Canadian Health Act. The previous Liberal government cut health care transfer payments to the provinces by $25 billion, which caused a shortage of doctors and nurses and long wait times. Our government has increased health care funding to the provinces by 33%. Delivery of health care is a provincial responsibility. We will continue working with the provinces to ensure quality and timely health care for all Canadians.

6. Should Canada implement a federal cap and trade system for carbon dioxide?

No. A cap and trade system could only be considered if done jointly with Canada and the U.S. Canada’s number one trading partner is the U.S. Both countries have strong economic ties. If Canada were to attempt a cap and trade system by itself, it would not be effective at reducing emissions and would disadvantage Canadian business and manufacturing because of the increased costs, causing lost jobs in Canada. Our Conservative government is committed to creating new jobs through training, trade and low taxes.

I am pro-life. Prime Minister Stephen Harper and a Conservative government will not introduce or support abortion legislation. Find all of Mark Warawa’s responses online at www.langleyadvance.com, click on ‘Decision 2011’

Rebecca Darnell Liberal Party 9. Are higher corporate taxes justified to increase services or pay down the deficit?

The Liberal Party will peg corporate tax rate at 18%, which provides $6 billion for services, as well as pay down the deficit.

10. Are higher personal income or sales taxes justified to increase services or pay down the deficit? The Liberal Party will pay down the deficit, without raising taxes.

21. Is this the right time for a federal election?

Yes. The Harper government failed the Canadian people. This is the first government in the history of Canada to have ever been found in contempt. Contempt of Parliament is the offence of obstructing Parliament in the carrying out of its functions, or of hindering any Member of Parliament in the performance of his or her duties. Actions that constitute a contempt of Parliament typically include such things as: deliberately misleading a House of Parliament; refusing to testify before, or to produce documents to, a House or committee; and attempting to influence a Member of Parliament. Find all of Rebecca Darnell’s responses online at www.langleyadvance.com, click on ‘Decision 2011’

Carey Poitras Green Party 6. Should Canada implement a federal cap and trade system for carbon dioxide?

Cap and trade imposes a significant transactional cost and is very complex to

operationalize across the whole economy. The Green Party will use a cap and trade component where it makes sense.

7. Do you support expanding free trade agreements to Latin America, Asia, and/or Europe? The Green Party supports fair, global trade. Global equity, Canadian sovereignty, human rights, and the environment first.

21. Is this the right time for a federal election?

Conservatives were found in contempt of Parliament, so we had no choice but to go to election. Find all of Carey Poitras’s responses online at www.langleyadvance.com, click on ‘Decision 2011’

Piotr Majkowski New Democratic Party

3. Does Canada’s health care system need more funding?

Yes. Absolutely. Canada urgently needs more doctors and nurses to cut wait times and address the needs of a burgeoning, aging population. Ottawa needs to enforce the Canada Health Act to stop the spread of private, for-profit health clinics. The NDP has a four-point plan to modernize medicare that includes a national drug strategy, a national human-resources strategy, a national disease-prevention strategy and a national seniors’-care strategy. I’m a nurse, and I witness the harmful effects of our health-care crisis first-hand all the time.

11. Would you support recall legislation for the federal government, allowing dissatisfied constituents to remove their MP?

Yes. Many Canadian voters feel disenfranchised under our first-past-the-post system which rewards only the candidate with the most votes and doesn’t reflect the wishes of the constituency as a whole. B.C. already has recall legislation that affords unhappy voters a chance to unseat an MLA who performs poorly (or doesn’t perform at all), and federal politicians should face similar medicine.

17. Should more money be put into criminal rehabilitation?

Yes. Not just into rehabilitation, but also into prevention. The NDP has an anti-gang strategy that would focus on at-risk youth and make it illegal to recruit gang members. Many young Canadians might reject the lure of criminal activities if there was a national effort to improve their educational and job opportunities, and their social welfare. Find all of Piotr Majkowski’s responses online at www.langleyadvance.com, click on ‘Decision 2011’

Craig Nobbs Pirate Party 9. Are higher corporate taxes justified to increase services or pay down the deficit?

Yes. A corporate tax rate of 17.5% would help pay down the deficit quicker than the current 16.5%, allowing for Canadians’ tax dollars to be used more wisely than paying off interest payments long term. Keeping the tax rate low at 17.5% would also ensure that small and medium-sized businesses retain the needed money to maintain and grow their businesses.

10. Are higher personal income or sales taxes justified to increase services or pay down the deficit?

Yes. A minor and temporary increase of of both the income and sales taxes with the specific intention to pay off the deficit would be acceptable. However, once the deficit has been paid off, both taxes would be returned to their current levels in short order.

14. Do you support a woman’s right to obtain an abortion as currently legislated?

No. Currently, there is no legislation on abortion to support; only case law which is sparse and non-committal at best. A woman’s right to abortion should be protected in cases where there is risk to the mother’s life or a medical complication presents. Additionally, in cases of rape/ incest then the decision being at the sole discretion of the victim within the first trimester. The Langley Chiefs are now officially the Langley Rivermen. The name change comes with a change of ownership, a deal now approved by the BCHL. “We take over the team June 1,”Roy Henderson, one of the new owners, told the Langley Advance. Henderson, 61, and his brother John, a 65-yearold accountant, own the franchise after receiving approval from the league and the league franchise committee. Roy was a Philadelphia Flyers scout who has worked at various levels of sports and hockey organizations. He was GM of the Langley Thunder and hopes to bring some of that experience to the Rivermen, namely the close connection between the community and the team. “It’s a community team,” he said. “We’ve got to get a better relationship with minor hockey. We’ve got to give just as much to the community as we take.” That means working with other hockey groups in the community to watch and help develop talent. “We’ve got to bring the

The Hendersons have been working on the improvements they plan for the team even before the final approval came through. “We already went down and visted with Tourism Langley,” Roy said. That was to find out all about the community events and groups. Roy said the team has to be more involved in the community, let its volunteers know how vital they are and have a better connection with sponsors. “We’ve got to get more fans in the seats,” Roy

added. The Hendersons take ownership of the club from the previous group which included Moray Keith, Heinz Hasselman, coach Harvey Smyl and Jim Bond. The sale could mean moves for the Hendersons, currently based in Chilliwack. In addition to having been the Thunder GM and a Flyers scout, Roy has run Global Sports Scouting for about two decades in Chilliwack. He’s off to Chicago for hockey camps, where he will be looking for potential Rivermen talent. The team already has its talent behind the bench but Roy would not disclose who is going to be the coach/GM. The Rivermen will be looking to make hockey games more of an event that offers something for the whole family, such as kids activities. “It’s not going to be just a hockey game,” Roy said.

Boxing

City Boxing has found a new home base at Revolution Gym. Amateur boxing in Langley has a richer tradition than most would expect. The Langley Boxing Club has been around since the 1940s and up until the early 1990s, the Ross family had been at the heart of the sport locally. Denny Ross and his two sons kept the club and sport alive in Langley for years, according to Dave Allison who in 1991 brought his then eightyear-old son James to the Langley club to give him a taste of the “sweet science.” Allison himself, 30 years earlier, also entered a club at age seven, back in the 1960s with his father who boxed in Scotland and in the British Army. The Allisons took the mantle passed on by the Ross family and have kept the sport going in Langley. James Allison went on to have a great amateur career that included 72 fights including seven B.C. titles and two national medals. Dave, a prominent name in the B.C. boxing scene, trained James. Most recently Dave Allison trained Sarah Pucek who achieved a world top-10 ranking as well as a national medal. Allison also trained former world champion Diane Dutra. Dave Allison was head coach of the Port Kells Boxing Club through much of the 1990s and at times trained both Tim Thurston and Tyler Jackson as well as Thurston’s

An invitation by Tim Thurston and Jackson brought everything full circle, now that the Allisons’ City Boxing Club has merged its boxing program within the confines of Revolution Martial Arts and Fitness. “It is bringing the rich local tradition of the sport in this area to a facility that is truly world class,” said the elder Allison. “It has been difficult for us to keep a competitive boxing program operational and making the economics work. Tim invited us to Revolution and has

Two of Langley’s young and up and coming boxers challenged two Americans earlier this month. Fighting in the States is always a challenge for Canadian boxers due to the depth of competition on the U.S. side, Dave explained. Mat Andreatta, who just turned 17 in January, had the toughest challenge when he took his 6-0-1 record into the ring with 20-year-old Nestor Garcia. Andreatta’s last fight was against 22-year-old Derrick Wong, 118 pounds to Andreatta’s 125.

Revolution already had a boxing program, however it was mostly a fitness/recreational program. This program is still available at Revolution, however now a real serious boxing program is operational.” He added that his boxing program is “second-to-none and real competitors are being produced.” “Even those who wish to train for fitness will benefit from the higherlevel atmosphere,” he added. “The sport of boxing is rich in tradition in Langley, and I believe still the best sport out there to build character in youth,” Dave Allison said.

Jarid now a coach …continued from page A33

Meanwhile, Texas, Arlington has offered Jarid an assistant coach position. Over the past four years, Vaughan has shone while on his scholarship and competing with UTA. He finished his university career as a multiple-time point-scorer in the Southland Conference Championships, and won an individual championship in

the 200m race at the 2009 SLC Outdoor Championships. Vaughan also placed second in the 100m behind current UTA standout Cordero Gray, and finished second in the 100m at the Texas Relays. He recorded the fastest university 200m time in America, and the fourth fastest in American university history. After that he had a chance to compete nationally before suffering a major injury at the end of the season. Overall, Vaughan scored seven times in individual events and numerous times as a member of UTA men’s relay teams.

In 2010, Vaughan went national, placing third in the 200m at the Canadian championships. Earlier in his career, Vaughan was named to Team BC for the Canada Games. Jarid’s and Jade’s parents, Debbie and Bernie Vaughan, originally from Zimbabwe in Africa, are going to miss their daughter. “We are going to miss Jade so much – it is a bit harder for a girl to go so far away from home at such a young age, but at least she will be near her brother, and the funny thing is that he may even

end up being one of her coaches,” Debbie Vaughan said. “Both Jarid and Jade love Langley and Canada, and although emigrating has been difficult for us financially, we are so appreciative of the opportunities given to the children, which they would never have had otherwise.” Jade added with a smile, “Yes, we do love our home of Langley. I am hoping my brother can put Langley on the map next year at the Olympics in London, and every time I race in the States I shall be thinking of my friends and family back in Langley.”

Trinity Western alumnus Chaim Schalk (Red Deer, Alta.) got one step closer to his dream of representing Canada on the beach volleyball court at the 2012 Summer Olympics after helping Canada to win the NORCECA Central Zone Phase of the Trinity Western University Athletics photos men’s beach volleyball Chaim Schalk, in action as a Continental Cup. member of the Trinity Western The cup event was held University men’s volleyball team. at Boco Chica, Dominican Republic. Schalk, who played for the Spartans men’s volleyball team from 2006/09, was part of a four-man Canadian contingent that not only beat Cuba in the final match but also earned a berth in next year’s Continental Cup Final, an Olympic qualifying tournament. In the final, Schalk and playing partner Martin Reader beat both Cuba teams in the final series and then won the golden set 15-13 to lead Canada to the title. The tournament is a little different style than conventional volleyball tournaments in that two teams represent each country and travel through the draw as a four-man unit. Both teams play both of the other teams in what is basically a best-of-five series. Schalk and Reader got to the final by first helping Canada to a 4-0 win over the United States April 18 to earn the red and white a spot in the semifinals. After fellow Canadians Christian Redmann (Toronto) and Ben Saxton (Calgary) won the opening match 2117, 21-16 over USA2, the Schalk/Reader team ended the four-match series by beating USA1 21-15, 21-16 in the first game and then taking the second game after an injury forfeit. Redmann and Saxton finished the sweep with a 21-15, 21-19 win over USA2. In the semifinal the Canadians won three out of four over Puerto Rico to advance to the final. Schalk and Reader beat Puerto Rico A 21-19, 17-21, 15-11 and lost to Puerto Rico B 21-16, 21-16, but with a pair of wins from the other Canadian pair over Puerto Rico B and over Puerto Rico A, the Canadians were off to the final where they were able to knock off Cuba.

WRIGLEY, Kenneth Brooke

Of Langley, B.C., passed away Easter Sunday morning, April 24, 2011 after emergency surgery at Langley Memorial Hospital. Born October 17, 1921 to James and Eleanor Wrigley in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, he lived a life devoted to providing for his family and caring for his wife of 59 years, Joan. He is survived by his wife Joan and his two daughters: Pat and her partner Kim and their three children, Kevin, Bryan and Barbara; and Eleanor and her partner David and their two children, Curtis and Amy. Kevin’s four children are Ken’s great-grandchildren: Larissa, Alexis, Bryce and Makayla. Growing up in the Depression years on the Prairies meant being creative and making your own fun. Ken did this well and through the Scouting movement made many life-time friendships and a desire for service organization work. After war-time Army service, Ken moved from Saskatoon to Winnipeg, tackled university for two years, set up a printing business, continued volunteer work with Scouting and met Joan Chesney. Family life followed, along with a 20+ year career in the Reflective Products division of 3M in the provinces of Manitoba, Alberta, Ontario and lastly British Columbia. Throughout this time, he was an active member of the United Commercial Travelers (UCT); he was very proud to receive a 60-year membership plaque and visit from fellow members this past fall. He enjoyed the good work and good people of UCT. Ken enjoyed home and family life, together he and Joan added personal touches, both in the house and the garden. He enjoyed taking his family on road trips and camping trips, especially in the large station wagons. In retirement, Joan and Ken enjoyed their travel trailer in Lynden, Washington, and being first in-line at the garage sales in Lynden and Bellingham. He always enjoyed family dinners and visiting with his grandchildren. His hobbies included model railroading and, more recently, circus model building and attending shows with his circus models. Ken had a fun sense of humour, he hoped to bring smiles and friendship to all he met. He would want a thank you to go to all his caregivers at LMH, acute and convalenscent care and ask that they remember him with a smile. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice. A celebration of a long and fulfillling life will be held at Harrison Pointe, 21616 - 52 Avenue, Langley, 2nd Floor, on Tuesday, May 3, 2011, from 2-4 p.m.

We Believe in You.

HUGE COMPLEX GARAGE SALE

Saturday, April 30th From 8am until 4pm 8716 Walnut Grove Drive Kids’ stuff, household, books, games, toys, tools

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Chase money. Your charm and magnetism hit high strokes all week – use this in the pursuit of money, or in love’s service. The main thing is, don’t waste this time – five of eight planets are in Aries! This gives you extra kick, clout and luck – and hints that whatever happens now is significant in terms of your entire 80 or 90 years. Other than a bit of deception Wednesday morn, and a sluggish Saturday, this is a lucky, smooth week. Get things done! Two cautions: A partner or competitor has the upper hand. Don’t fight. If you oppose authority you’ll lose. Taurus April 20-May 20: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness climb, especially Monday onward. Get out, be seen, start significant projects. Your “world wide” luck is still a bit low, but that will change soon. June 4 will bring almost 13 months of huge, decade-high luck, particularly in finances, investments, debt, sex, lifestyle changes and commitments in legal, educational, cultural or travel areas that somehow turn your life around. So some of your energy right now might be wellspent preparing for future (near future!) action. Tap government, charities, researchers: They will aid. Gemini May 21-June 20: Your energy is a bit low, so don’t put yourself in a “performance situation.” Rest, protect your health, dress sensibly, eat right. Fulfil obligations, but ignore those who clamour. You’re still in a period in which big wishes, lifemate needs and social yearnings are likely to be fulfilled. Some things can prevent this: first, deep, heart-bending romance, creative outpourings or taking big risks; second, investments, lifestyle changes, health, or “deep sex.” Of these, the “second” will be lucky June 2011 to June 2012; the “first” will begin to improve after mid-2012. Wish!

Cancer June 21-July 22: You optimism, popularity and delight rise (all week, but especially Monday/ Tuesday). Social joys, flirtations, wish fulfilment and entertainment arrive! Make and accept invitations. Wishes might particularly come true in career, status and business areas. Something really significant has been building here for some months, and has either already offered a big step up for you, or will soon. Be alert, eager and ambitious. Two things can impede your advance: a partner, mate or competitor (or a “stubborn public”) or a home situation that demands compromise. Rest, plan midweek. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Be ambitious – you can make strides upward now. Although you might not see discernible progress, you’re “preparing the way” for a great run of luck in career, business, status and prestige areas from early June right into June 2012. So plug away, especially Monday. A major trend still flows through your areas of law, love, culture, far travel, education, publishing and intellectual endeavours. This is a lucky, surprising influence, so be ready to say “Ah, ha!” and embrace what comes – now into 2018, these zones (e.g., travel, school) could bring your mate for life! Happiness, midweek! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The big action, significant occurrences remain heavily weighted toward sexual bonds, intimate commitments, lifestyle changes, research, secrets, financial actions, investments, debts, consequences – and, overall, luckily so! But a new element enters now, an element of peace and understanding, of wisdom and compassion. You can decide to make a commitment while you’re clear about the results. Legalities, love and ethics also enter. This can bring sex with love, great cooperation with another, investments that are ethical also. Monday, Thursday, Friday support your efforts.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Though deep sexual, financial and health themes arise in May, a strong and lucky accent remains on relationships, marriage, business partnerships, fame and public relations, contracts and negotiations, litigation, relocation and opportunities in general. You’re cautious, 2010 to late 2012 – that’s good, but caution seldom grabs the prize. You have to leap, too. You know there’s at least one thing or person to leap to, and of course, reasons to and not to. My advice: Leap. A love affair, pregnancy, new financial picture, new domicile, even new country could result. Wow – life! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Though most of the luck and action of your life remain in the machinery, work and health realm, that won’t last past June. May brings intriguing meetings, partnership proposals, dealings with others, new contacts – and, perhaps, ideas/visions of new places you’d like to be, either across the globe or up the ladder of success. Maintain your equilibrium and sense of diplomacy this month, don’t fight or argue. Realize some of the new urges and new contacts that arise now hint at, might even develop into, the huge, lucky opportunities that arrive this June to June 2012. (Hints Monday.) Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Powerful luck, trends, movement, change still affect your romantic, creative, child-oriented, pleasure-seeking, speculative and sports zones (to June 4), but another trend moves in through May: Work. Work, health, machinery, duties, all that good stuff. As these don’t combine that well, usually, I’d split my time between them. Keep your eye on that quiet, deep long-term goal, too. Monday brings work success. Life’s filled with opportunities Wednesday noon to Friday noon – if you know how to co-operate, to accent another’s needs/desires. Soon, a major work project!

Call 604-998-0218 604-444-3000 to place your ad to ad

May 1 - 7 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: The weeks ahead successfully combine security and expansion. Although romance, creativity, speculation and pleasure are accented in May, your luck in real estate, home, security, retirement, “Mother Nature” and similar zones continues strongly – but only to early June. If you’ve been hesitating about buying (repairing, renovating) that home or starting that retirement fund or garden, or about having a child, you should act soon. (One exception: real estate might be luckier if you wait until after May 10.) Romance Tuesday. Tackle chores midweek to Friday. Diplomacy, Saturday! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Pay attention to your “base,” especially Monday/Tuesday – family members, home, security, these deserve attention all month. You might have frequent visitors, or be travelling around town a lot, texting or phoning – but as the weeks pass, this travel and talk gently subside, to bring you, by June, into a year of quiet, peaceful domestic bliss. Or luck, at least, for some homebased friction will exist, mid-May through June. Romance and/or creativity, games and gambles pull you Wednesday to Friday. A Gemini might be involved. All’s fine! Chores, Saturday. Rest, nap all week. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: This is a pretty smooth, easy week – though Saturday (May 7) might be a little frustrating or rocky. The accent lies on short trips, acquaintances, siblings, paperwork, details, messaging. Be curious, follow your nose. Since money matters are still blessed (into early June) the best course would be to use this communications and fact-oriented period in the pursuit of money, to communicate with clients or potential employers, VIPs, etc. (Monday is good for this.) Your home life, family, security and diet (nutrients) gain importance Wednesday-Friday: Good results! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

Consider the facts...

The average home on today’s market, if priced correctly, will sell in less than 3 weeks!

Why pay high commissions? Our commissions are totally negotiable! If we sell it ourself, % our commission is only of the selling price!

2½

If you, the homeowner, wish to work your own open houses & at the same time you find a buyer, we do the negotiating and the paperwork, % etc., it’s only commission period! (Minimum $5000 00)
