People with questions about medical marijuana can seek answers at a community meeting on Friday evening, July 9 (tonight). Hempyz, a gift and novelty store on Fraser Highway, is sponsoring the meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the Douglas Recreation Centre. Since 1999, Health Canada has administered the Marijuana Medical Access Regulations that allow people to use pot for certain medical conditions. Hempyz owner and meeting organizer Randy Caine is licensed to dispense medical marijuana to people who have Health Canada approval – a responsibility that involves going through annual legal screening. It was because so many people were coming into his shop, desperate for information about the medical marijuana program, that he has held similar meetings in the past – and it’s also why he’s become a licensed dispenser. He provides medicinal pot mostly to older people, although he deals with some younger recipients who have ailments such as MS or cerebral palsy. “Mostly it has a lot to do with pain management or nausea,” he said. He noted that one of the speakers on Friday evening, Simmi Dhillon, is a 37-year-old mother of two who, after sustaining a spinal injury that left her with radiating headaches, tried many prescription medicines. Dhillon, with a history in criminal justice and married to a police officer, was finally able to find some relief with medical marijuana. Caine said that’s what the information session is for – to provide people with answers they can use to make informed decisions. “You ought to be the one who makes that determination,” he said. Also on Friday evening’s speakers’ list are Bob Kay, founding member of BeKind, the Okanagan Growers and Compassion Club, and Rob Calloway, who has a masters degree in psychology and health. The venue can accommodate about 200 people. Caine said he hosted an information session there about 18 months ago which attracted about 60. This time, when he was distributing flyers to announcement the meeting, the community seemed much more open, he noted. He understands people in the community have widely differing opinions on the issue. “I respect that,” Caine said.

The deficit can now safely be eliminated. Langley School District’s plan to eliminate its $13.5 million debt and deficit shortfall, which was submitted to the provincial government in the spring, has has been approved

by education minister Margaret MacDiarmid. “Langley’s board of education wishes to thank the minister and her staff for understanding the very difficult situation this school district has found itself in,” Langley board chair Joan Bech said in a press release. Langley schools will have until June 30, 2015, to get the books in order. The district already went ahead with the cuts set out in the plan, while it was still awaiting word from the ministry. According to the plan, the district will cut $3.375 million from its

annual budgets, starting in 2011-2012. The deficit, incurred in the 20082009 and 2009-2010 operating years, was due to financial errors and inadequate financial controls, which resulted in the board making decisions based on inaccurate revenue and expenditure projections, according to the board’s announcement on the plan approval. “We have worked very hard to gain approval for this plan,” Bech said. “Now we will have to work just as hard to ensure Langley School District never again finds itself in a similar situation.”

Langley RCMP Const. Alex Evans tore down police tape from across 240th Street Thursday morning.

All police found were shell casings and bullet holes after someone fired several shots into a home near Brown Road Park early Thursday morning. At about 2:09 a.m., someone fired a gun into the home, on a property with greenhouses. No one at the house was hit by the gunfire. In the aftermath, witnesses heard a vehicle driving away, but no one was able to provide

a description of the car. Police spoke to both witnesses and the people living in the house. Everyone has been cooperative with the investigators, and none of the people living there are known to police. That has left police with little motive for the crime. The Langley RCMP Serious Crime Unit is still investigating. A stretch of 240th Street near 50th Ave was closed until mid-morning Thursday for the investigation. Mountie arrested for drunk driving

When Langley Mounties pulled over a drunk driver near the Cascades Casino on July 2, they found an RCMP officer behind the wheel. The 44-year-old officer works out of the E Division Headquarters unit,

not with the Langley detachment. She was arrested and now faces a charge of impaired driving. The incident began with a complaint of a suspected drunk driver leaving the casino, and a description of the car was broadcast to all officers on patrol in Langley. Police found the vehicle and pulled over the driver soon after. “Every police officer has seen firsthand the trauma and heartbreak caused by drinking and driving,” said Cpl. Annie Linteau, spokesperson for the RCMP E Division. “Every case of impaired driving is disappointing but

especially when it involves a police officer.” The officer is apparently still on duty, but her work status will be reviewed when Crown counsel approves the charges. The officer’s name will also not be released until charges are laid. A decision on charges will likely be made between now and August, Linteau said. The officer has a 21-year service record with the RCMP. A first court appearance has been scheduled for Aug. 26 in Surrey Provincial Court.

The team of cyclists involved in this year’s Ride for Hope benefiting Canuck Place Children’s Hospice completed its 200-kilometre journey at around suppertime Wednesday. They left from Alliance Principle Ingredients on the Langley/Surrey border at around 8 a.m. July 7 and rode to Hope, reaching their destination of Memorial Park just before 6 p.m. The ride – under a scorching sun – served a fundraiser for Canuck Place, which provides pediatric care for children with life-threatening illnesses while providing support for their loved ones. Fundraising totals were still being counted at press deadline. Last year’s ride raised more than $50,000. Ride for Hope’s major sponsors are London Drugs, Alliance Principle Ingredients, and Jamieson Natural Sources.

Gizella Pat and her family fled Communist Hungary during the 1956 revolution, but people around the Lower Mainland and even Washington State came to know the name Gizella not from politics but from pastry. After living in Austria for a time, the 100-year-old woman and her family came to Canada in 1957 and around 1959, she started Gizella Pastry in Vancouver. She sold the pastry shop a few years later, after building up a client base from throughout the region. That’s because it was one of only two true French-style pastry shops in the Lower Mainland. Pat would go on to live in Surrey and for the past few years Langley with her daughter Marta Taszner and her family. It’s here Pat started going to Southgate Church and where in late June, the church’s seniors group threw her a surprise 100th birthday tea. Today is Pat’s birthday and on Saturday, the whole congregation, along

Ironically Pat herself didn’t give much thought to the milestone until recently. “On my 99th birthday, somebody say to me you know how many days are [until 100],” she said. Despite some recent health ups and downs, including fluid in her lungs, she’s determined to regain strength and carry on, the head of a proud family. Pat has two sons (in Kelowna and California) and her daughter. There’s also six grandchildren, four great grand children and two great great grandchildren. Recently Pat was one of the dignitaries in the Langley Community Day parade, driven along the route in a classic vehicle. In fact history surrounds Pat. She still uses brocade chairs owned by her mother and her bedroom is filled with cherished antique and vintage furniture and photos that harken back to a time before computers and space travel. For her birthday several politicians and others sent accolades, including from the Canadian Cancer Society. Pat’s husband, who taught at university in Hungary before they escaped and emigrated, died of a fast moving cancer 47 years ago and she was a fundraiser for the society for 40 years.

Students, staff, the community, and businesses are joining forces to make Brookswood Secondary greener. Can the students be hired out for landscaping work? That was the first question several people asked when the new Brookswood Secondary School courtyard garden was unveiled on June 29. Phase one has seen the tired, aging courtyard renewed with student-built, raised wood container boxes, benches, planting beds, irrigation, and more. “We actually had over 60 students involved in the building,” explained theatre teacher Sharon Conrad, who has overseen the plant side of the project. It’s a space that will be available to many at the school. “The design of the space is intended to be multipurpose – an outdoor classroom for teachers and their students, a viewing area for performances, a quiet space to sit and enjoy nature, a showplace for student artwork and a meeting place for all,” she said. Under the guidance of building and construction teacher Bruce Fraser, two classes of students started building. “The Brookswood Courtyard Project has been in the works for many years and now after all is said and done, they have completed Phase One of creating a beautiful and functional space for the staff and students,” Conrad said. While the building started last fall, the

project has been in the works for longer because it required the support of so many different groups. The courtyard houses six large trees because of a $1,900 donation from the Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds program, intended to green up school grounds. The parent advisory council provided building materials while Van Noort Nursery donated plants, Ackermans gave sand and Murphy’s donated soil. The students have also had help from staff with CUPE local 1851, vital when it came time to move 20 foot trees with 900 lb. root balls. Current students built the courtyard and future students will maintain it. “The students will learn about the plants, as well as participate in the seasonal maintenance of the space,” Conrad said. Future phases of the project involve the installation of a water course and putting in more plants and decorative features. Conrad would like to hear from anyone in the community with plant materials they are willing to donate, particularly lithodora, a trailing evergreen. “I would love if anyone has rocks,” she added. She would like to hear from people with large landscaping rocks (up to about 300 lb. or three feet in diameter). The caveat is that the donor would have to make arrangements to get them to the school because there is no funding for this. Beat the heat, or it beats you Some of the sirens you’ve heard around Langley in the past few days have been firefighters and paramedics rushing to deal with people overcome by the heat. After a long, damp spring, summer has arrived with a vengeance. And while we aren’t quite dealing with the savage temperatures seen in Toronto – or right here a year ago – we’ve still seen temperature records broken. So please, be careful out there. Watch for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Fraser Health warns that muscle cramps and nausea, headaches, dizziness, vomiting, fatigue, and weakness can all be signs of heat exhaustion. To recover, rest somewhere cool, put ice packs under the arms, at the back of the neck, or on the groin, and gradually drink fluids. For heat stroke, symptoms are more severe, including confusion, weakness, loss of consciousness, hot, dry skin, and a body temperature as high as 40.6 C. For that condition, call 911, get the victim to a cool and shady area, and loosen or remove clothing. Ultimately, a trip to the hospital is necessary. To avoid that, keep cool and drink plenty of water. That advice goes for your pets, too – don’t leave them in the car at the mall, even for “just a minute.” If you can’t stay cool at home, get out of the house – go to the library, the mall, a community centre. Anywhere you can sit down and enjoy air conditioning and sip something cool. Finally, watch the smoking. Our firefighters have already seen several grass fires caused by discarded butts. – M.C.

Dear Editor, Longtime owners at Meadowview Estates in Langley say it was the second time since 1986 that a hot air balloon has landed in the nature preserve at the bottom of 201A Street, right on top of the new North Nicomekl Trunk Sewer (where it’s already backfilled and grassed over, and fortunately not in the as yet incomplete section 30 metres further west. It happened on Saturday evening, after sunset. The noise from the burner brought everybody out to watch it. Sundance Balloons’ C-GKB1 (yes, these things have numbers just like planes) sat there for a while with a full crew and passengers, who enjoyed the scenery and the wild life around them hanging over the railings of our complex. The impact of climate change and the changing economy need to be included in the study. Planning of climate-resilient communities should be based on smarter growth today. A public discussion with the community of Fort Langley, ParkLane Homes, and invited experts could see ParkLane steward a development that can finally leave a lasting positive legacy for all of Langley, and could also be a model of sustainable development for all of B.C. Students create one cool educational website

People can learn some pretty cool stuff on an interactive website created by a team from Lochiel U-Connect. by Heather Colpitts

They’ve spent months scouting the moon and zipping off to Mars, but still made it home for supper each night. A group of eight students at Lochiel U-Connect Education Centre created Ice Worlds, an interactive website that’s so educational and entertaining that it earned them the B.C. School Superintendents’ Association scholarship for Grade 8/9. Using past space experience and their own imaginations, the youngsters created new worlds for people to explore. Not bad for kids not old enough to drive cars, let alone pilot space ships. The over-arching theme of the whole project was ice, so users can find out about ice on other worlds as well as how it behaves on earth. “Our kids have done some very cutting edge programming,” said teacher John Harris, who has been honoured for his interdisciplinary teaching style. Team member Ryan Scovill out-ofschool hobbies include computer programming. The Grade 7 student plans to study computer science, and believes space travel will become commonplace in his lifetime. Scovill likes the possibilities that are opening up as people learn more about earth and other worlds. “We’ve just scratched the surface of

He helped develop the website and the interactive elements for Ice Worlds, as well as serving as a site administrator for the 3-D world, overseeing when there are users other than the students themselves. The site at www2.sd35.bc.ca/uconnect/ ice/index.html is open to anyone with internet access. “I think it’s awesome,” he said of the final result. “I learned so much this way.” In addition to having to learn about computer programming, the students had to learn about science (how ice acts in

different environments) and about history, because the program includes re-creations of NASA space missions. The superintendents’ association teamed up with Apple Canada in 2001 to offer an award for technology-based learning. The selection criteria for the submissions include creativity, visual appearance, technical quality and educational content. There are four grade categories (Grades 6/7, 8/9, 10/11 and 12). This year, the volunteer judges had to assess 60 entries. The feedback from the Lochiel project includes judges’ comments, including,

Roadway Boulevard and Ditch Maintenance

As part of its annual mowing program, Langley Township maintains its municipally-owned roadway boulevards and rural roadway ditches. This ongoing program covers approximately 3,500 km of roadside sections, and is responsible for weed control, quality appearance, and maintenance of sight lines at intersections. During the spring and summer months, two roadside mowers and two brush whackers are assigned to predetermined routes to ensure that each section is completed at least twice. Requests by residents and businesses for mowing and brush whacking are recorded, then included in the seasonal program. To attend to individual requests would require reassigning the equipment, which would reduce the Township’s ability to complete all required sections. Local Mounties are concentrating efforts on fighting property crime after local numbers took a jump. Langley RCMP Insp. Richard Konarski was at Langley City council Monday to review the RCMP’s quarterly report, revealing the most noticeable trend was with property crimes. While figures show that serious crime numbers are decreasing, property crime has become a sore point for the community. “In April and May of this year we had quite a spike,” said Konarski, who added it was particularly noticeable in Langley City and Brookswood. The RCMP crime analyst has identified about 10 different groups of perpetrators. Konarski noted that in June, there was a drop in many crime categories because of some arrests, which he Richard Konarski explained was in keeping with the Langley RCMP Inspector cyclical nature of crime. As people are arrested, charged and jailed, communities see drops in certain types of crimes. As well, the overall state of the economy plays a role. Last year metal prices were low so there was little theft, but commodity prices have risen so copper theft is up. And last year, the RCMP spent much more time dealing with fraud, much of that centring around credit and debit card scanners. “One of the areas where we have actually dropped is fraud,” Konarski explained. Also of continuing concern are thefts from vehicles, as people steal goods that are easily fenced (GPS units, stereos, and purses, for example). “I guess the public isn’t really getting the message that they need to put their toys away,” commented City Councillor Rudy Storteboom. Langley RCMP is making some changes in its operations, starting an effort to target prolific offenders to “keep the heat on them,” Konarski noted. “We’re introducing a second crime analyst at the detachment,” he said, noting a focus on property crimes.

Tim Hill is still waiting for his cheque from Langley’s Saul Pressman. Hill’s wife, Moira, died in 2008 of colorectal cancer. During the last stages of her illness, she and her husband had tried a variety of alternative treatments, as conventional medical science ran out of options. One of those alt med treatments was ozone therapy, an unproven and untested idea that ozone molecules can kill cancer. The couple cashed out RRSPs and ordered two ozone treatment units from Pressman and his Plasmafire International company. The first, smaller unit arrived, but a sauna unit never showed up, although Plasmafire cashed the Hills’ cheque. After Moira’s death, Hill decided to take action against a company he believed swindled him. In April, Hill won a small claims case against Pressman, after Pressman failed to even show up to defend himself in Surrey Provincial Court. Hill is now owed $4,315.79, the cost of the missing sauna unit plus expenses. But Hill still hasn’t heard from Pressman. “I’ve still got to chase this guy to get the money,” Hill told the Langley Advance from his Calgary home. Hill is now waiting to see if federal regulators take action against Pressman’s business, before he takes further legal steps to recover the money. This Saturday is the second anniversary of Moira’s death. With the legal case against Pressman settled, Hill is still mourning, but he does feel a sense of satisfaction. “If I had let this go, it was probably something that would haunt me for quite some time,” he said. Going to the media and the small claims court has been helpful, he said. “It settled me down and brought some closure.” Hill said he knows that many people, like himself, will grasp at any faint thread of hope when a loved one is terminally ill. However, he hopes that bad publicity will keep more people from going to Plasmafire in the future. “My job now is to help out the next

Although Plasmafire’s website makes few medical claims for its ozone dispensers, two online books attributed to Pressman are widely distributed on alternative medicine sites. They make extravagant claims for the healing effects of ozone in a variety of forms. Pressman has also claimed success treating AIDS with ozone. Last fall, the Langley Advance spoke with Linda Balneaves, a UBC professor who studies alternative medicine. She said that ozone therapy has never been scientifically studied in humans. Actually breathing in or otherwise ingesting a significant amount of ozone could actually damage tissue. Ozone, composed of three oxygen atoms, is a main components of smog.

The recent court case was not the first time Pressman has been before a judge over financial matters. In 2007, Pressman was ordered to pay more than $7,200 in back rent owed on a Langley City warehouse space. Owner Murray Wood said getting the money from Pressman proved difficult, and it took eight months before he was paid in full, despite a judge’s order to pay up in 30 days. Other court cases filed against Pressman involve credit card companies, banks, and private individuals. Since the late 1990s, court records show Pressman has been involved in small claims cases nine times. The Langley Advance again attempted to contact Pressman about this story, but he did not respond.

Contrary to my coworkers’ stance on the monarchy, and noting all the angry letters they’ve received since penning their recent columns and editorials on the subject, I get to be the bearer of positive news about the Queen. As most of you know, her majesty the Queen and Prince Philip travelled through parts of North America from June 28 to July 6. Well, there was never any expectation that the Royal couple would travel west on this trip – especially as far west as B.C. – local monarchists will be elated to know they did get a little taste of Langley earlier this week. Much to the delight of Mike Raffan, the proprietor of Wayne Cuddington/Canwest News Township 7 The Queen on a visit to Canada. Vineyards and Winery, a 2007 Chardonnay from the local operation was served up during one of their dinners. The state dinner – served up Monday in Toronto and hosted by the federal government – featured herb-roasted Alberta beef tenderloins, two B.C. wines (the other was a 2007 Mission Hills Reserve Merlot), poached Nova Scotia lobster, Ontario fennel and asparagus salad, and it was topped off with a Quebec favourite, a maple syrup-inspired dessert. “We were thrilled when we saw… that our 2007 Township 7 Chardonnay was chosen to be served to the Queen during her recent visit to Canada,” Raffan said. “Considering that the official federal dinner was held in Ontario, and that there are hundreds of Canadian wineries to choose from, our selection was a true honour.” continued on page A16…

The most recent came this week, when they were named a 2010 Progressive Employer of Canada because of their momfriendly work practices. While she hoped to travel south, and help with the cleanup efforts personally, Husick said that’s not possible for her right now. So this local effort will have to suffice for now. “Everyone can make a mark in their own community,” she said, rallying people to do whatever they can to help minimize the environmental devastation. For $20, all of which goes to the cause, she’s offering a 15-minute studio session of the dog – alone – on a white background. A local photographer with a passion for animals is doing her part this weekend to help wildlife affected by the BP oil spill. Lisa Husick is hosting a Paws for the Cause fundraising dog portrait shoot, with 100 per cent of the money going to the Alabama Wildlife Centre. This fundraiser is set for Sunday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will be held in Husick’s home studio at 5003 205th St. Husick has been working in the photography industry since 2002, and while she shoots the traditional wedding and family portraits, she’s also trained as a photojournalist and has been published worldwide. While she’s only called Langley home for the past year, she was born in Canada, but grew up in the United Kingdom, and has also lived in France, Japan, Scotland. She received her first camera at age 11, which she credits with opening her up to the world around her, and now she strives to tell stories with all of her

Stage ‘superstar’ scoops honours TWU grad Kaylee Harwood was labelled the most promising newcomer to the Vancouver theatre scene during the Jessie Awards.

I then hopped around from show to show with different community theatre companies in the area, and found it hard to stay focused on school that second year. That was when I had a meeting with Angela at TWU and said this is what I want to do and study and how should I go about pursuing this goal.” As Harwood immersed herself in the craft, she discovered her wider range of abilities and interests. She trained and worked on shows in Vancouver and took a gig in Chemanius before her last semester. All those experiences helped her realize her calling.

“I’m grateful that I had a history of performing before I went to university, but my years at TWU were when my acting training took off, and I feel incredibly indebted to the theatre department there for the opportunities in every aspect of theatre-creation.” Her former instructor weighed in on Harwood’s awards and her talents. “Kaylee Harwood is a superstar,” said Konrad. “She’s got the whole package. She can sing, dance, act, and audition. And more importantly, she’s a lovely human being so people like working with her. They will be on the Spirit Square stage from 5 to 6 p.m., as part of the Concerts in the Park 2010 Series. The Hot Moonbeams will play tunes ranging from “powerpop” to garage rock, and even alternative rock.

quick-growing ground-cover may not make you happy in the long run. All groundcovers are invasive, and the quick-growing ones need extra vigilance to stop them from infiltrating into your garden beds. One of the better lawn alternatives is white clover. It’s amenable to most soils, is drought-tolerant, and its deep, tough roots are unappetizing to chafer larvae. It can go for weeks without mowing and is fairly resilient to foot traffic (though not as durable as grass). As well, white-flowered clover is a sun-loving legume that actually improves the soil by fixing nitrogen at its roots. The flowers attract honey bees and native bees to your garden, where they’ll hang around and pollinate flowers and fruit. The biggest negative is

that it’s usually grown from seed, so it will take a few months for good coverage – though friends who see white clover as a weed may be happy to have you dig plants out of their lawns! If garden centres can’t help with clover seed, I suggest you try www.oscseeds. com, a Canadian company based in Ontario. It offers several lawn alternatives. But I should mention ‘Crownvetch’ is on invasive plant lists, and Sweet Woodruff has become a nightmare for many gardeners. If your lawn is sunny and well-drained, creeping thyme can handle some foot traffic. Creeping thyme has tiny pink flowers in summer and is beautifully fragrant when trod on. If your soil is heavy, amend the top few inches by digging in sand. An alternative might be stonecrop (Sedum acre). If your lawn is shady or part shady, you might try violets or Geranium macrorrhizum, which has pink flowers much of the summer. I learned how rugged this geranium is by seeing it thriving along the edge of a narrow driveway where teenage boys routinely drove their cars over it.

Bugleweed (Ajuga reptans) is also good in shade and has spectacular fourinch spikes of bright blue flowers (sometimes pink or white) in spring. But the quickest shade carpeter is Creeping Jenny – especially when started from plants. Unfortunately, it’s also great at jumping border edges. But its golden form is quite beautiful. If your lawn is very shady and your soil wants to make moss, why not let it? Moss doesn’t stand hard use and is slippy for running feet, but it can handle occasional, gentle walking. For a moist, very shady lawn, moss grows more easily and is less expensive than anything else. Dear Anne,

After New West scored less than a minute later to tie the score at 9-9, Langley’s Joel McCready gave the hosts a 10-9 advantage. From there, it was all ’Bellies, who filled the Thunder net with four balls to take a 13-10 lead. Langley’s Alex Turner scored at the 13:27 mark of the third period to stem the bleeding somewhat.

Neither team could find the net for the next few minutes. New Westminster’s Cliff Smith scored with 38 seconds remaining in the game to cap the night’s scoring. Leblanc led all Thunder goalscorers with a hat trick. Belton tallied twice while Langley’s leading scorer Garrett Billings scored once and added six assists.

The win improves the ’Bellies record to a WLA-best 10-3. The loss snapped the Thunder’s modest two-game winning streak, as they fell to 5-8. There is still hope, as the fifth-place Thunder are just two points out of a playoff spot. The top four teams in the WLA earn tickets to the post-season.

Superweek gets underway with a Canadian Criterium Championship on the line and top riders from elite American and European teams gunning for $40,000 in prize money.

LOSC head coach Brian Metcalfe was happy with his swimmers’ performances. “It’s always great to have a large team at a meet and even better when so many of them come away with medals,” Metcalfe said. “This was a great warm-up for the difficult meets now coming up for these swimmers.” Recently, a small number of LOSC swimmers attended the B.C. AA championships in Surrey to try and achieve their qualifying times for the B.C. AAA meet, being held in Kamloops this coming weekend. Facing stiff competition, most of the Olympians managed to book their tickets for the provincial championships. Robyn Nakano, 11, put in some strong swims and ended up not only qualifying for the AAAs this year, but next year, as well. She won gold in the 200m fly with such a fast time, she also gained the 12-year-old qualifying standard. Nakano also won gold in the 100m fly and 200m backstroke with two more AAA qualifying times. Liam Taylor, 11, had a prolific meet, winning gold in the 1500m freestyle and 400m freestyle swims, and silver in the 100m freestyle and 200m freestyle, with all these efforts qualifying him for the AAA championships. Gabriella Szalkai 11, swimming in the same 200m fly event as Nakano, won silver and a spot at the AAA meet. Olympians coach Rhonda Mackay said, “These guys were so determined to make their qualifying times and did not disappoint themselves. I am so proud of them and can’t wait to see them compete in Kamloops…” Olympians fall registration will be taking place at Walnut Grove Pool Sept. 8 and 10 (4-6 p.m.) and Sept. 11 at both Walnut Grove and WC Blair pools (9 a.m. to noon). Langley Olympians swim club members added to their medal collections after a fine showing at the Summer Solstice Invitational Meet, hosted by Hyack Swim Club. This long course (50metre pool) meet took place at the City Centre Aquatic Complex in Coquitlam. The Langley swimmers came away with a large collection of medals and a couple of new club records. Aldergrove is the site of the boys provincial soccer championships “B” Cup, which kicked off yesterday (Thursday) and runs until Sunday. The event features 48 teams in age groups ranging from U13 to U18, with eight teams in each age group representing the various regions across the province. The tournament is taking place at Aldergrove Athletic Park and Aldergrove Community Secondary School over four days, for a total of 96 games.

The LUYSA U13 silver Rage, coached by Ian Smith, kicked off Thursday against a team from the Columbia Kootenays. The LUYSA U15 gold team, coached by Steve Riley, began its provincial quest with a game against Cordova Bay (Vancouver Island) Thursday. The Spartans newest women’s soccer recruit has the ability to be an effective player at the university level, says TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh.

The Trinity Western University Spartans women’s soccer team continued to stockpile an already daunting cupboard of talent when coach Graham Roxburgh recently announced the signing of striker Melissa Horahan. The 5’8” Surrey product, who just graduated from Fraser Valley Christian, joins the Spartans after spending the last two years with the Vancouver Whitecaps Prospects program. While Horahan has been battling knee injuries for the past two years, and will red shirt for her first year at TWU, Roxburgh is thrilled with having such a high end talent join the Spartans. “I am delighted Mel has chosen to attend TWU and be part of our soccer program’s future,” said Roxburgh, who has led the Spartans to three national championships in the last five years (2009, 2008 and 2004). “Mel is a very good player

North Langley fell a run short in its bid for gold at the B.C. championships. The North Langley Inferno were off and running to begin the Squint Lake Provincial Softball Championships in Burnaby. The weekend began with a bang, with the local super mites winning the base running competition. Saturday, the Inferno ended up in top spot after round robin play, compiling a perfect 4-0 record to finish first out of 16 teams. Sunday, after two impressive wins over Newton and Richmond in the quarter-final and semifinal, respectively, the group of 10-year-old girls squared off in the championship game against a strong Ridge Meadows Strikers squad. hen Pam Erikson came around the corner in her back garden Sunday, she was not astonished to see a trio of women lounging on a bench in amid a sea of flowers, shrubs and trees. After all, that’s what her ninth annual charity open house was all about – people coming out to enjoy her one-acre North Otter garden, while at the same time helping to raise money for a charity. These women, however, definitely caught Erikson’s attention – not because they had a tea towel laid out on the lawn with a china tea cup and saucer placed before them – and not because each of the women held teacups filled with the steaming hot beverage. All that was still not a total shock, Erikson said. What caught her off guard was the writing on the tea towel. It was a towel from Yorkshire, England – her birthplace. She emigrated from Britain when she was 14 years old, and her mother, grandmother, and her own children still call Langley home. And as she discovered, these women – who had never been to her gardens before – decided to visit and have a tea party of sorts in honour of their late mother. The eye-catching tea towel had belonged to their mother, and they set it out with a cup of tea, in her honour.

Dhruv Natha, 11, won a three-foot tall stuffed Rottweiler dog at the open house. That encounter, and the subsequent visit that lasted more than half an hour, was the best, unexpected highlight of Erikson’s weekend. Last Saturday and Sunday, the daylily diva invited thousands of people to tour her private gardens, the only toll she asked was a donation to the Critter Care Wildlife Society on 216th Street in South Langley. Without question, the weather deterred some spectators. Attendance this year dropped to around 1,000, down significantly from last year’s 2,000 garden lovers. Despite that, Erikson is delighted to announce that between the garden tour donations, and a raffle held by the Aldergrove Daylily Society, she’s going to be able to present a cheque for $2,110 to the charity. “It was wonderful… It was very well attended and a lot of new people came out, people who said they just discovered us and they’ll be back,” said Erikson, who is already making plans for next year.

It’s comforting to know there are truckers like John Beeler sharing the roads with us. The Fraser Valley driver, who has logged more than 3.75 million kilometres without a preventable accident or injury, was honoured in Victoria recently for his exemplary attention to safety. Beeler is a veteran driver with Canadian Freightways who was given the 2010 Professional Driver of the Year Award by the BC Trucking Association, during the organization’s annual general meeting in Victoria last month. He’s driven 29 years accident free. The award is sponsored annually by BCTA and Volvo Trucks Canada to recognize and promote safe driving among professional drivers. In addition to excellent driving records, award winners have often distinguished themselves through service to their communities and acts of bravery, explained BCTA president and CEO Paul Landry. “John Beeler represents the best of the best on the road today, and we’re very proud of his accomplishment. Like many of his colleagues, he quietly and tirelessly, day in and day out, helps to transport consumer goods and other necessary freight safely and efficiently throughout the province,” Landry said. During his long career as a commercial truck driver, Beeler pestered numberless mechanics about every aspect of his vehicles, so that he could identify problems himself and have them put to rights. leadership outside his regular driving duties. “John Beeler’s positive attitude, patience, courtesy and thoroughness are well known. He is a leader in maintaining the high standards that Canadian Freightways has set for its fleets.
