Herbal Elixirs OREGANO FINDS A PLACE IN THE MEDICINE CABINET.
It appears the Italians may be on to something. Long regarded for their lower than average mortality rate (including less incidence of heart disease and cancer), Italians may be benefiting from more than general healthy lifestyles. Could it be that the use of an abundance of herbs on pizza and in spaghetti sauce over in the old country is the secret to a life devoid of illness? Could the answer simply be the oregano generously sprinkled into and onto their delicious suppers? More specifically, it could be the use of oil of oregano, grown in the Mediterranean region.
This herbal extract has properties that practitioners of natural remedies claim will aid or prevent a multitude of maladies. Cultivated from mountaintops, the oregano flowers are processed for their main ingredient – carvacrol — and oil of oregano (at 75 to 85 per cent strength carvacrol) is available at many stores and pharmacies. It usually comes in a liquid form, and users say between three to six drops in a small glass of water is the ideal application. But do be warned – if you have an aversion to Buckley’s Mixture, oil of oregano is also an “acquired
taste.” Strong and bitter, it’s a grin-and-bear-it experience, but one that will grow on you. B.C. Institute of Technology is at the forefront of natural product research. The school states that according to Health Canada, 71 per cent of Canadians use some form of natural health product as part of their healthcare regimen, including vitamins and minerals, herbal remedies, homeopathic medicines, traditional medicines, probiotics, and other products like amino acids and essential fatty acids.
Whether an NHP is taken in the form of a bulk plant substance, capsule, tablet, liquid extract, or food format, it needs to be safe, effective and of high quality. For this reason, it is important that analytical methods are developed to determine the integrity of NHPs sold for consumption. The research conducted at BCIT’s Natural Products Research Group (NRG) involves investigation into a variety of NHP issues. These include the determination of toxic components and contaminants, the quantification of “marker” compounds, and the analysis of medicinal preparations used in clinical studies.

The raw milk debate: worth the risk? Barbara Schellenberg grew up on a farm in the B.C. Interior, and when she wanted milk she got it from a cow. To her, the pasteurized white liquid inside the four-litre cartons at the supermarket isn’t the milk she knows and loves – it tastes and feels different. Instead, she gets her milk directly from a farm in the Fraser Valley – unpasteurized and nonhomogenized, with a layer of cream settled on top, just like in the stories children hear from their grandparents. There’s only one problem: The province’s health authorities label raw milk as a dangerous product, and say it’s illegal to sell or distribute. The Fraser Health Authority has sought court order against the former owner of the farm, who is now being charged with contempt of court for refusing to shut down the operation. “For me, I think it’s frustrating. People have
a right to real food, and it just makes you think. What are they going to push next?” said Schellenberg, who despite her personal love of raw milk, can’t bring any into her North Vancouver restaurant, Ethical Kitchen, even for her own personal consumption.
“I don’t like the taste of pasteurized milk, it just tastes cooked.” She said she’s never been sick from milk and didn’t understand what the fuss was about. Raw milk is legal for consumption in Canada by animal owners themselves, but it’s illegal to sell or distribute. To get around that problem, groups set up cow shares, where people purchase a portion of an animal in the herd so that they can be considered owners. That’s what Michael Schmidt did at his farm in Durham, Ont., where he was still charged with
19 counts related to the distributing and selling of raw milk. In January, a judge acquitted him of all charges, ruling that he was distributing milk to co-owners of the cattle, not selling to the public. That’s also how Our Cows Cooperative in the Fraser Valley, originally called Home on the Range and started by farmer Alice Jongerden, hopes to skirt B.C. regulations. Jongerden is facing contempt of court charges as part of her battle against Fraser Health. Schmidt has now taken over the farm, and said he plans to fight any attempt to shut them down the same way he did in Ontario, though he admits there’s some personal risk. “For me it’s a matter of principle. Do people still have the right to make a decision for themselves or is the government now cracking down dictatorially on very personal decision,” he said. He believes raw milk is healthier, contains

The most common bacteria infections associated with drinking raw milk are E. coli, which can be fatal, and Campylobacter, which can cause fever, diarrhea and severe pain. Both bacteria can enter the milk from contamination with fecal matter or improperly cleaned equipment, but are largely killed in the pasteurization process.

TIME TO GET YOUR D
“When you look at where disease comes from related to milk, it’s virtually 100 per cent due to raw milk, he said.
As we approach the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, it’s clear that in many areas of North America, sunshine is in short supply. What’s more startling is that many North Americans – studies suggest 30 to 50 per cent – are deďŹ cient in the sunshine vitamin, Vitamin D.
PHOTO PAUL MCGRATH
Carsley said he understood the argument some people make that it’s their right to drink the type of milk they choose. Still, he said the law exists especially to protect children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems, who are most at risk. “Practically speaking it’s kids who are particularly vulnerable from getting very sick if the milk is contaminated from E. coli, they can get very serious kidney damage or even die, he warned. He wasn’t aware of any raw milk producers within the area covered by Vancouver Coastal Health, but said any new operation would be treated the same as in the Fraser Valley. The risk of pathogens isn’t something that worries Schmidt, however.
Nina Stuhlmacher is a raw milk drinker.
“There’s no food, no government-inspected food, that they can guarantee that the food is free of pathogens, he said, arguing proper procedures help prevent disease. It’s a debate, he says, that won’t end any time soon. TESSA HOLLOWAY
According to nutrition expert Gloria Tsang, founder of HealthCastle.com, vitamin D deďŹ ciency is an issue all year long, not just during winter days with few sunshine hours – but the winter season is an especially important time to ensure good vitamin D levels, since the sunshine vitamin helps protect against winter u. “We call vitamin D the sunshine vitamin,â€? Tsang says, “But the reality is that most people don’t get enough vitamin D from the sun at any time of year – especially since it’s now so important to protect our skin from the damaging effects of the sun. We can get some vitamin D from food sources, but the truth is that just about everyone should be taking a vitamin D supplement, too.â€? In addition to helping ďŹ ght the u, vitamin D has other important effects in the body. It aids calcium and phosphorus absorption, helping prevent bone diseases like rickets and osteoporosis, and studies have shown that is has a strong association with lowered cancer risk.

DENTISTRY IN THE 21ST CENTURY: NEUROMUSCULAR DENTISTRY Your mouth speaks volumes about you before you speak a word. This is where we “live, eat, breathe, communicate, swallow, taste and experience sensation. One of the most intriguing phenomena in all of physiology is the “bite. The bite can significantly affect posture and is very much implicated in headaches, jaw pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, vertigo (dizziness), and Tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Dr Janet Travell, physician to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, states that 90% of all pain is of muscular origin. If your teeth don’t fit together properly, your muscles accommodate, forcing your jaw to close on a path, or be held in a way that stresses and fatigues the muscles over time. Muscles “rule and we want happy “rulers (muscles). It is widely believed that 80% of all headaches are caused by a poor bite. A poor bite results in muscle tension. Objective data is obtained using Computerized Bioelectric Instruments which give precise measurements of muscle status and Lucie function, jaw movements and joint sounds. If it has been measured, it is a FACT. If it has not been measured, it is an OPINION. Neuromuscular Dentistry provides an opportunity to live without pain. It is a branch of Dentistry that considers the entire system that controls the position and function of your jaw – muscles, teeth, joints and nerves – to achieve optimal results. Today’s Dentistry invites people to explore the possibility of looking great and functioning properly, as a correct (Neuromuscular) bite is a foundation for optimal health. Shabnam
Fatty ďŹ sh, like salmon, tuna, sardines, and mackerel, as well as cod liver oil, are the best food sources of vitamin D.
Enjoy eggs Egg yolks contain small amounts of vitamin D3.
Find fortiďŹ ed foods Milk fortiďŹ ed with vitamin D virtually eliminated rickets in the 1930s, and is still a prime source of vitamin D today. Other vitamin D-fortiďŹ ed foods include breakfast cereals, yogurt, and orange juice.
Munch on mushrooms Some mushrooms contain vitamin D2, including some mushrooms grown in conditions speciďŹ cally designed to boost vitamin D content.
Be safe Take a supplement: Expert opinions vary on how much vitamin D we need (some experts recommend up to 1000 IU per day for adults), but most agree we’re not getting enough. Since it’s hard to absorb vitamin D from food sources, your safest best is to take a supplement, especially in the winter. Of course, we all get some of our vitamin D supply from the sun – but increasing your sun exposure to up your vitamin D intake is not a good idea, since the potential risks to your skin outweigh the beneďŹ ts of the additional vitamin D. Focus on eating vitamin D-containing foods instead, and top up your intake with a good supplement. More healthy eating tips from registered dietitians are available at www.HealthCastle.com.

Power Surge: the juice on energy drinks Dietitian JENNIFER SYGO investigates the contents of the can.
Adults can barely make informed decisions about energy drinks, so what are kids to do? I remember when Red Bull, the industry leader in energy drinks, first emerged in the Canadian market. It was 1997, and after the initial brouhaha died down, I assumed it would remain a fringe product, much like Jolt Cola, the retro drink that once proudly boasted “all the sugar and twice the caffeine” of Coca-Cola. As it turned out, I was entirely wrong. Not only did Red Bull stick around, energy drinks have become a major player in the beverage industry, with Canadians guzzling some 35 million litres in 2006 (up from 26 million litres in 2001).
Energy drinks are now the fastest growing part of the soft drink industry, with some 300 brands now available in North America alone.
LIVINGWELL HOME CARE SERVICES INC www.livingwellhomecare.ca Offering Professional Home Support Services to the North Shore, Bowen Island, Squamish and Vancouver
As a result of the growing demand, you can now find energy drinks of all shapes and sizes, ranging from monstrous sugarand caffeine-laden cans, to concentrated energy shots and sugar-free diet drinks.
While energy drinks have gradually wormed their way into our collective consciousness, they haven’t done so without controversy. Some of the earliest warnings surrounded their use with alcohol - experts feared (and still fear) that the combination of caffeine, a stimulant, with alcohol, a depressant, could be tough on the heart. More than that, several studies have shown that mixing alcohol and energy drinks tricks you into feeling less drunk than you actually are, making you that much more vulnerable to drinking too much. While health experts have made their concerns about energy drinks well known, that hasn’t stopped their use among the

drinking classes; as any frequenter of a club scene will tell you, the “vodka-Red Bull” is as popular as ever. Unfortunately, a study on college students also shows that those who mix energy drinks with booze are four times more likely to drive drunk than non-mixers - again, a consequence of the false sense of sobriety they induce. While mixing alcohol and energy drinks remains a concern, the latest health controversy stems from an editorial in the Canadian Medical Association Journal recommending restrictions of sales and marketing of these products to children and youth. Since many energy drinks contain more caffeine than a child under 12 should consume in an entire day (80 mg), and some contain 200 mg of caffeine per serving or more, the consequences of children consuming these drinks are serious - and that’s without getting into the sky-high sugar content (note that a typical cup of coffee contains 80 mg to 140 mg of caffeine). Not surprisingly, the energy-drink industry shot back, claiming their marketing is directed at adults, not kids. Of course, as any sports-savvy marketer will tell you, having athletes as endorsers (Red Bull leads the way as a sponsor of athletes in Major League Baseball, beach volleyball, skiing and snowboarding, not to mention teams like the Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls) is a great way to increase brand awareness among impressionable children and youth.
Botox Cosmetic Fillers Laser Hair Removal Skin Tightening Microdermabrasion XFOL Chemical Peels IPL Photo Skin Rejuvenation
Energy-drink officials also point to what they feel are clear - though often tiny - warnings on their labels that their products should not be consumed by children, or by pregnant or breastfeeding women. Fair enough, but with easy accessibility, no laws regulating their sale, and a sugary taste that is all too appealing to kids, perhaps it’s not surprising that it’s estimated that some 40 per cent of children and adolescents consume the stuff.

Decoding your deodorant So in the name of raising awareness for parents, kids, rock stars and athletes alike, here are some key facts to remember when it comes to energy drinks: 1. Energy drinks are not the same as sports drinks. While most sports drinks do contain sugar, it’s usually in a lower amount than you’ll find in pop, and they also contain electrolytes (salts), designed to replenish energy and sweat losses accrued during intense activity. Energy drinks, on the other hand, are designed to boost energy, or wakefulness, during periods of fatigue or exertion, usually in the form of caffeine.
Sports-minded or not, most of us wouldn’t leave the house without applying underarm deodorant. To find out what we’re slathering on our armpits, Patrick Langston takes a close look at the fine print of one popular brand. • SPORT SCENT Fragrance to mask body odour. For some, “sport” may call to mind the scent of a locker-room. • ANTIPERSPIRANT Antiperspirants temporarily block sweat glands, reducing the moisture on which odour-producing bacteria thrive. • DEODORANT Deodorants mask the odour that arises when perspiration, which is actually odourless, is colonized by naturally occurring bacteria. If you’re bacteria, the wet, warm climate of an armpit is the best place ever. • POWER RUSH A marketing term, presumably suggesting fast, effective action.
2. Energy drinks are governed by different labelling laws. Most sports drinks, along with pop and juice, display the nowfamiliar Nutrition Facts Panel, listing calories, fats, sugar and other key nutrients. Depending on their ingredients and the claims they make, however, energy drinks are often classified as natural health products, allowing them to leave sugar off their labelling, leaving consumers in the dark.
• WATER A carrier for other ingredients; its fluidity also makes the product easier to apply.
3. Energy drinks often contain more than caffeine.
• ALUMINUM ZIRCONIUM OCTACHLOROHYDREX GLY Prevents sweat glands from excreting liquid by forming a temporary plug in the sweat ducts. The skin’s natural sloughing eventually removes the plugs. The Alzheimer’s Society says there’s no proven causal link between aluminum and the disease. Debate continues about a possible relationship between aluminum in antiperspirants and breast cancer. The United States Food and Drug Administration suggests that people with renal dysfunction consult their doctor before using antiperspirants with aluminum. A small percentage of people are allergic to aluminum, and may contact dermatitis from antiperspirants containing aluminum. • ALCOHOL DENAT (DENATURED) Because alcohol evaporates quickly, the active ingredients of deodorants and antiperspirants are often dissolved in it. Alcohol also creates a pleasant, cool sensation as it evaporates and may kill bacteria. • CALCIUM CHLORIDE • A FIRMING AGENT • CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, DIMETHICONE, TRISILOXANE • SKIN CONDITIONERS PATRICK LANGSTON – POSTMEDIA NEWS
Although caffeine is the most common stimulant you’ll find in energy drinks, you’ll also see other stimulants, such as guarana, taurine, ginseng and ginkgo in various amounts. Since each stimulant works in different ways and at different dosages, making sense of it all becomes nearly impossible for the average consumer.
THE BOTTOM LINE: When it comes to energy drinks, Pandora’s box is already wide open. While adults certainly have the right to choose what they eat or drink, the thought of a child or teen guzzling back the equivalent of two cups of coffee in a single energy shot is alarming. When you add in the at times massive sugar content, you have a recipe for a nutritional disaster that’s best avoided by almost anyone. Healthy sleep makes for happy children Sleep. Without enough of it, your child may have difficulty functioning throughout the day, concentrating at school and then settling down at night again. Sleep is how your child’s body recharges and prepares itself for the activities of the following day. So how do you know if your child is not getting enough? Sleep consultant Crystal DiNicolo says, “Signs that your child isn’t getting enough sleep may include moodiness, irritability, behavioural problems, lack of concentration or motivation, hyperactivity at bedtime and clumsiness.” She also adds that if you notice that your child wakes up frequently in the night or too early in the morning, or has an inability to cope with stress, sleep deprivation may be the culprit. According to DiNicolo, parents can follow some general guidelines when it comes to how much sleep is enough.
Per night, children aged three to five should be getting 11 to 13 hours; kids from five to 12 should get 10 to 12 hours; and 12- to 18-year-olds should aim for nine to 10 hours.
PHOTO DREAMSTIME.COM
If you suspect your child isn’t getting enough sleep, a number of factors may be involved, from nutrition to sleep environment to bedtime routine. Diana Steele, registered dietitian and owner of Eating for Energy, says there is a correlation between what a child eats and his/her quality of sleep afterwards, and what he/she eats can make the difference. “If the food [you give your child just before bedtime] is high in protein, it can take a while to digest,” Steele says. She suggests carbohydrates are better than protein for a pre-bedtime snack, but parents should make sure it is not sugary and does not contain artificial colouring (which Steele says have been linked to ADHD and other behavioral problems). She suggests wholegrain cereal and milk, toast and peanut butter or a little jam, or yogurt and fruit. Why? “Because when carbohydrates are digested, serotonins are released which turn into melatonin, which helps you sleep,” Steele explains.
Timing is important too. Don’t send your child to bed 30 minutes after a big dinner, but don’t send him/her to sleep hungry either. “If you have dinner shortly before bed, your child’s body will be spending all its energy digesting instead of winding down. And if your kids are hungry before bed, don’t let their growling tummies keep them up. Instead give them a small, healthy snack to tide them over the several hours of sleep they will get.”
What your children do before bed is linked to how long it takes them to reach sleep. DiNicolo explains, “Stimulating activities such as watching TV or playing video games right before bed have been linked to the increase in the amount of time it takes for children to fall asleep. These activities should be stopped at least an hour before bedtime.” DiNicolo adds that getting our children into a bedtime routine, no matter how old they are, can signal the mind and body that sleep is coming soon. “This can include a bath, putting pyjamas on, eating a light snack or reading a book,” she suggests. “And choose an early bedtime so your kids aren’t pushed into overtiredness, which makes falling asleep and staying asleep much more difficult.”
Kids can fall asleep almost anywhere, it seems – except in their own beds at bedtime!

Although public health nurses can give general advice, there’s no specific one-on-one help for sleep issues anywhere in the public system. That’s about to change, however, with the Rocky Sleep Study examining problems with sleep in parents and their children across the region and in North Vancouver. The study places parents in two groups – one which immediately receives help on how to improve their children’s sleep, and another which receives general safety help first and sleep intervention after several weeks as a control group. “Our goal is to try to introduce it as a routine intervention in the context of the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, so families out there who have babies with sleep problems aren’t left wondering where to go to help,” said Wendy Hall, a professor of nursing at UBC who is heading up the study. Occupational therapist Jennifer Garden offers a personalized sleep intervention service on the North Shore, and she said public health interventions are sorely needed. While most of her clients have private insurance that covers her cost, she said nobody should have to pay for what is essentially basic care. “We all act differently when we’re tired but in children a lot of it comes out in aggression or behavioural issues, and they’re often mislabeled when they get to school,” she said, adding that can result in a misdiagnosis for something such as Attention Deficit Disorder. More information on the Rocky Sleep Study can be found online at www.rockysleepstudy.com. Garden can be reached through www.otvancouver.com. TESSA HOLLOWAY

Hear at Home gives you back a full life As we age, our body functions alter in their level of performance. One of the most common effects of aging is hearing loss.
Jennifer Abbott, of North Vancouver’s Hear at Home Mobile Hearing Clinic, helps educate people about hearing loss and prevention.
... promotes education about hearing loss and protecting the hearing you still have... “Hear at Home believes and promotes education about hearing loss and protecting the hearing you still have, says Jennifer. “We offer free seminars to groups of 5 or more who want to learn about hearing loss and what their options may be when seeking help. Though many people realize they have a hearing problem, it can be difficult to admit. “On average people wait 7 years to deal with hearing loss once
they have realize they have a problem, says Jennifer. “I think the Baby Boomer generation is not as likely to compromise their quality of life and this figure will be reduced. I have many clients who say, ‘I’m determined to not suffer with my hearing loss like my mom did’. Advances in hearing amplification technology and improvements in design have spawned a new generation of hearing aids that are more effective and more discreet. “Not only are hearing aids smaller, but newer technologies in sound processing translates into a considerable improvement in sound quality making them more appealing to the user. The ‘Open Fit’ design is something of a breakthrough. “Open Fit hearing aids were introduced 5 years ago and
people with a common high frequency hearing loss report a significant increase in hearing aid satisfaction. It sits behind the ear with a clear thin tube going into the ear. It’s well hidden and offers a more natural sound experience. It’s because of this design that people are actually saying, ‘I love my new hearing aids.’

veryone has been through it, is going through it or will go through it one day. However, those adolescent years bring with them a host of challenges for both teens and parents that can sometimes leave everyone feeling a little baffled.
“Teenagers are . . . posed with the challenge of finding a balance between staying close to their family, particularly their parents,

and then forging their own identity, and so depending on the health of that family that can be easier or more difficult to do, says Vancouver psychotherapist Katherine Young, who runs Head and Heart Counselling. “So, if they are successful in forging their own identity but they have to sort of really separate themselves too much from their parents, then they’re left really vulnerable without that guidance. On the other hand, if they don’t separate themselves enough they’re left in sort of an infantile state where they don’t figure who they want to be.

“One of the biggest questions I think that comes up for teenagers and mental health is the structure in the family, whether there’s enough structure or too much. A child that does not have enough structure will have difficulties developing the inner controls that everyone needs to prevent things like substance over use or computer over use, which, Young says, is a problem she is seeing more and more frequently.

Too much structure can also hinder the transition from child to adulthood.
“With too much of that, it’s kind of the same thing,” Young says. “The child doesn’t develop that internally. So, they can either go into a rebellion against the parents where they’re still not really discovering who they are they’re just reacting against what they perceive as excessive control or they just stay in kind of a child-like state and not learn to take risks in the world and face their fears.” It’s a delicate balance and Young sees many families that are having a hard time walking that tightrope. It’s all about emotional needs and it’s the parent’s job to try and read that in their children, she says. That’s what forms the relationship and the connection between parents and child. “You can have all the discipline in the world and if ... there’s not a relationship to base that on, the kid’s not going to care.”
it to school; and mis-use of substances. “Experimentation is normal in adolescence,” Wagner says. “It’s normal to expect kids to do a little experimentation.” However, for some experimentation can turn into mis-use and abuse. While there are individuals at every age that can be affected by serious mental illnesses, the general teen population is most susceptible to anxiety, depression and substance abuse. Wagner says he also sees a number of younger patients who practice self-harm or are exhibiting suicidal tendencies. “If a child is exceptionally irritable, that can be a sign of anxiety and depression,” Young says. “If they withdraw from a more full life that they were living, from friends and from activities; if you see a change; if they were pretty good at doing their homework and then they stop; excessive crying.”
It’s important for parents to walk the line between counsellor and disciplinarian.
These behaviours are not difficult to spot, she says. Parents should also keep an eye on kids that are involved in several clubs and after school activities and always strive for perfect marks to ensure they’re not pushing themselves too far and not enjoying their activities anymore.
The adolescent years are also when control over things extracurricular activities and food intake shifts from the parent to the child.
Teens are stereotypically thought of as moody and driven by hormones. However, Young says it all has to be taken into context. “I always want teenagers to feel like their feelings, their behaviours have meaning and they make sense,” she says. Registered psychologist Dr. John Wagner says there are signs parents should keep an eye out for: social withdrawal; problems with basic functions, such as eating, sleeping and making

“Just learning the basics of life takes some discipline and structure to do; nutrition, getting a little exercise, all those basics.”
“For the first time they’re thinking, ‘Well, maybe I shouldn’t drink that Coke, it sure has a lot of sugar in it,’” Young says. “So they’re developing that inner control and some kids go
ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM STIFF NECK, SHOULDERS & BACK?
“One of the primary things is just talking with kids,” Wagner says, adding parents should be up front with teens, ask open-ended questions
and take the time to listen. “I think it’s really important to let your child talk to you about what they’re going through even if it puts you in an awkward position,” says Young. “I would advise parents to try and walk that line and try to manage that grey area where your child can still come to you and talk to you, but that you still have some behaviour limits around alcohol and substance abuse and sex and all that stuff.”

For some people, winter is fun and exciting, for S.A.D. sufferers, winter can be dreadful. Research from around the world has shown KEVIN Manager that artificial bright light (10,000 lux) can put the fun and excitement back into winter.
Even though we have evolved as outdoor people, we now spend our time in dimly lit offices, watching TV, in malls, etc. We lack the bright light that is so essential to our well being. During fall and winter, about 20% of our population is affected by S.A.D., resulting in fatigue, lethargy, anxiety, weight gain, social withdrawal, etc. 75% of those affected are women. So, during those dark depressing winter days, make sure you have one of our bright lights to bring back your sunny disposition.
