Delta police had to call in the military Monday after a suspicious device floated ashore in Boundary Bay. Police received a call after someone noticed the device near the dike in the neighbourhood of 96th Street. Once on scene, officers noticed the device had markings on it indicating the military should be contacted if it was located. Police secured the area around the device and contacted military explosives personnel on Vancouver Island. Upon their arrival, the military personnel deemed it was not an explosive and removed the device.

Ex-NHLer suing police & Delta Lawsuit now before B.C. Supreme Court stems from fight at North Delta bar more than four years ago BY

JESSICA KERR

A case against Delta police and the Corporation of Delta is before the courts this week. Former professional hockey player Garrett Burnett, who played one season in the NHL, is suing Delta police chief Jim Cessford and two officers for negligence and breach of duty. He alleges the department failed to warn the public of the dangers of entering Cheers nightclub in

North Delta. The allegations stem from a fight at the bar on Boxing Day in 2006. Burnett and several others were removed from the establishment after a fight broke out during which Burnett was hit in the head with a barstool. He suffered life-threatening injuries, was in an induced coma for 20 days and spent another four months in hospital. In 2007, he launched a lawsuit against the owners of the nightclub, Three Jay Holdings, and sev-

eral staff members, however a new suit launched in November 2008 also named Cessford, two police officers and the Corporation of Delta. The former owners of the club, which was sold in 2008, have settled, but the case against the police is proceeding in B.C. Supreme Court. In court last week, the defence called Jeremy Wocknitz, head of security for the club at the time of the altercation. Wocknitz said he was called

to the upper bar area when he received a report of an argument. He told B.C. Supreme Court Justice Austin Cullen that when he arrived at the scene, he spoke to a well-built man about six feet three inches tall, whom he later determined to be Burnett. The former hockey player was among a group of primarily Caucasian men arguing with a group of primarily Indo-Canadian men, he told the judge. He said he told Burnett the night was almost over and the

confrontation wasn’t worth it, but that Burnett was agitated and not listening to him. “He reached over to a table, picked up a highball glass and threw it at the other group of males,” he said. Under questioning from lawyer Jeremy Poole, Wocknitz said a fight then broke out. Unable to keep the two groups separated, Wocknitz said, security staff surrounded the group and See LAWSUIT page 3

Trying to predict the big one Professor says smaller seismic activity over time can provide clues to when a major earthquake will strike BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Research will be undertaken in B.C. to more accurately predict the risk of major earthquakes. In an interview with the Optimist, Dr. Kristy Tiampo, associate professor and industrial research chair at the University of Western Ontario’s earth sciences department, explained a new method she helped develop to predict earthquake risk over periods as short as five to 10 years. The method, called the Pattern Informatics (PI) Index, is a result of research funded by the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction, a not-for-profit organization sponsored by the Canadian insurance industry. “Despite the fact most seismologist say earthquakes can’t be predicted, there’s actually a significant amount of research in this area of forecasting, the idea that you can forecast or give some kind of probability of a large event in a certain region over a prescribed period of time,” said Tiampo

Noting attempts to forecast big earthquakes have been around for a long time, the PI index is different in that it relies on data on many smaller events to come up with patterns.

“Frequently, not always, but frequently, changes in stress occur where there’s going to be a large event.” Dr. Kristy Tiampo

Tiampo noted smaller earthquakes happen in reaction to stress fields. Collecting and analyzing that data can indicate changes occurring in the underlying stresses in the system. “Frequently, not always, but frequently, changes in stress occur where there’s going to be a large event,” she said. “It’s a probability forecast. In some ways it’s just like a weather forecast where you have a higher probability of a thunderstorm. It turns out it’s pretty accurate in the sense that

it’s very good at forecasting the locations of earthquakes, which are going to occur over the next 10 years,” she said. “If we had good data on these smaller events, and there is a large earthquake, it’s very probable that we will have chosen that location ahead of time.” Tiampo said most earthquake hazard maps are based on larger events and the average time between them. Not having an event around the time it’s expected would mean it’s overdue in conventional thinking, however, earthquakes are very much non-linear events that don’t have precise regularity, she said. She noted forecasting has been done in Eastern Canada, but forecasting maps for this region might not be as reliable as she likes because the data used for the analysis wasn’t as abundant. Her plan is to begin indepth research here this summer. “Not that long ago it was thought there was not much seismic hazard in the Cascadia region — Portland, Seattle Vancouver

Earthquakes Canada, a division of Natural Resources Canada, plots all earthquakes that have occurred over a 30-day period. Most of those are small magnitude events. and all up and down that area. There wasn’t a lot of small seismicity collected, but it is also hard to collect it because of the nature of that subduction zone, because it is very deep.” In December, the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction released a study titled Reducing the risk of earthquake damage in Canada: Lessons from Haiti and Chile. The paper warned there’s a 30 per cent chance an earthquake strong enough to cause sig-

nificant damage will strike southwestern B.C. within the next 50 years. Tiampo noted the newer forecast method would be useful when it comes earthquake preparedness and funding allocations. “In B.C., you’ll have a better idea if the resources and money should be put into upgrading your child’s school in Richmond or Delta, for example. It’s not meant to panic people,” she said. Former Delta-Richmond

East MP John Cummins recently read a statement in the House of Commons noting that on Feb. 15, a mild earthquake shook Richmond and Delta that provided a reminder of the need to have stronger infrastructure to withstand a major quake. Mayor Lois Jackson recently told the Optimist she has told staff the municipality should consider mock earthquake drills to test emergency preparedness.

Cummins says report proves HST is a tax grab BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

An independent panel’s report on the controversial harmonized sales tax in B.C. proves it’s nothing more than a tax grab, says soon-to-be provincial Conservative leader John Cummins. The former longtime Delta MP, who’s the uncontested candidate for the Conservative leadership later this month, is showing he’s not going to mince words when it comes to the contentious HST. Commenting on a report released last week, It’s Your Decision, which found the HST implemented last July is costing families about $350 a year more in sales tax, Cummins said this year families and consumers will pay $1.3 billion more in HST than under the old

PST/GST system. “The tax was supposed to revenue neutral with higher consumer taxes offset by savings for business and lower prices. However, this report shows that businesses are only saving $730 million. The HST has been a huge windfall to the government — they are taking in $600 million more than they were before.” Last week, an independent panel commissioned by the government, led by former Alberta finance minister Jim Dinning, released its report looking at the impacts of the HST. It found the new tax is costing families about $350 a year more because services previously exempt from the PST are no longer tax-free under the HST. Those services range from restaurant meals to haircuts to gym memberships.

LAWSUIT from page 1 pushed them out the exit door. Near the exit, Wocknitz

said he saw Burnett trip and fall and a glint of a steel bar stool being raised overhead.

It’s a message that’s already been delivered by FIGHT HST leader and former B.C. premier Bill Vander Zalm. He told the Optimist the report’s findings are based on everyday “routine” family purchases and don’t include larger expenses such as furniture, airline tickets or legal fees, for example, which would drive

costs even higher. “It’s a bit misleading and, frankly, there are a number of things in the report that are a bit misleading,” said Vander Zalm, a longtime Ladner resident. “You can use stats one way or another and they’ve used them to their advantage. I know everyone has a bias and when the government picked the panel they

had a bias, there’s no doubt about that. That’s why we need to take these reports with a grain of salt.” Following the release of the report, Premier Christy Clark promised to look at lightening the burden, hinting at the possibility of rebates, exemptions or even cutting to the rate. Last month, Fight HST released its own report:

HST or PST? The truth about the HST and why returning to the PST is better for B.C. That report concluded the HST will cost an average of $400 to $500 each year for every man, woman and child, for a total increased tax burden of $10 billion in the first five years. The report noted returning to the PST or a revised form of PST will save B.C. taxpayers billions of dollars. A province-wide vote on whether to scrap the HST will be conducted June 24 by a mail-in ballot. “I, quite frankly, believe the tax will disappear. They’re telling us it could take up to two years to get rid of it. It’s amazing how they can bring in a tax in a matter of weeks but when they want to get rid of it, it takes years,” said Vander Zalm.

Later he saw Burnett lying prone on the ground outside the club. No one has ever been charged with the assault and Burnett alleges the police

were negligent in their investigation. The 35-year-old Coquitlam native played on 13 teams in six leagues over his nine seasons in pro

hockey, mostly at the minor league level. He played in 39 games with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the 2003-04 season.

He was an unsigned free agent at the time of the incident and has not played hockey since. With files from the Province

Local schools in top third of province DSS places 50th & SDSS 87th out of 274 B.C. schools in Fraser Institute’s annual, and controversial, rankings BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

High schools in Ladner and Tsawwassen fared reasonably well in the Fraser Institute’s most recent ranking of B.C.’s secondary schools. Delta Secondary in Ladner finished 50th out of 274 high schools. The school earned a rating of 7.3 out of 10 for the 2009/2010 year. Meanwhile, South Delta Secondary in Tsawwassen finished 87th with a 6.7 rating. Southpointe Academy, a Tsawwassen private school, was the top ranked school in the district, ranking ninth in the province with an 8.9 rating.

Delta Secondary was the highest ranked public high school in Delta in the Fraser Institute’s 2011 report card. The lowest among the eight secondary schools ranked in the Delta district was North Delta Secondary, which finished 236th with only a 4.5 rating. “Our report card is the number one source for objective, reliable information about how B.C. and Yukon secondary schools stack up in terms of academics,” said Peter Cowley, director of the institute’s school performance studies and co-author of the Report Card on Secondary Schools in British Columbia and Yukon 2011. Earlier this year, the institute released its annual rankings of elementary schools in which Delta’s

public schools didn’t fare too well. Ladner’s Neilson Grove ranked the highest, finishing 107th out of 875 schools. Delta’s private schools scored better. The Fraser Institute’s annual rankings always create controversy and are routinely disputed by the B.C. Teachers Federation, which says they lack credibility. The rankings are never included on any Delta school board agendas. Cowley said his reports offer valuable insight about a school’s academic history and the demographic makeup of its population, key considerations when parents want to choose the right school for their kids.

A South Delta man is facing theft charges after he was caught in the act last week. Delta police received a report at around 3 a.m. Thursday that a man was going through vehicles in the 5400-block of Rawlings Crescent in Tsawwassen. Officers set up a perimeter in the area and within 20 minutes had found a 25-year-old man matching the description of their suspect. He was arrested and officers found several pieces of property — including sunglasses and an iPod — that were identified by two of the vehicle owners as belonging to them.

$20,000 grand prize to be unveiled at May Days The Delta Hospital Foundation’s new MiniHome Lottery features a prize worth over $20,000 for one lucky winner. The farm-themed family activity centre includes all the amenities of a real home. The 60-square-foot mini-home features a twostorey design, with a full sleeping loft. The prize will be awarded fully furnished, and professionally decorated, with an electrical outlet and free delivery (access dependant). The concept and creation of the mini-home has been a labour of love for three unique Delta residents. Sarah Gallop of Sarah Gallop Design Inc. approached Brandon Smith and Danny Christian of New Vision Projects with the idea of creating an activity centre with proceeds going to the Delta Hospital Foundation. “When I actually stopped to think about Delta Hospital, I was surprised by just how much time I have spent in this wonder-

ful hospital,” said Gallop. “As a designer, what better way to make a contribution than to design something? I partnered up with friends at New Vision Projects, and together we’ve committed to design and build the centre and donate it to the hospital to raise money for new equipment.”

“As a designer, what better way to make a contribution than to design something?”

Sarah Gallop

The mini-home has branched out further than Gallop, Smith and Christian. Various local businesses and individuals donated all the materials, supplies and labour needed. From design and construction to decorating and furnishing, every piece of the activity centre was provided not only free of charge but from Delta organizations as well. Delta Hospital

Foundation executive director Teresa Cooper was astounded by the immense generosity of Sarah Gallop Design Inc. and New Vision Projects. “Not only are these individuals donating their time and expertise generously, they are taking a leadership role by organizing this community event. It’s a fun and exciting way to give back to their hospital.” The completed minihome will be unveiled at the Ladner May Days parade on Sunday, May 29. It will be available for viewing throughout the summer at the Ladner Village Market and at Delta Hospital. Tickets are $5 and will be available beginning May 27 at 10 a.m. They can be purchased by phone at 604-940-9695 or at Delta Hospital, Delta Carpets or ICI Paints. For more information about the lottery, visit www. deltahospital.com or call 604-940-9695. The winner will be drawn Sept. 27.

South Coast opens fashion outlet in Ladner Village

South Coast Casuals has expanded. Owners Bill and Tracey McKnight have opened up a second location in Ladner Village, called Outlet Fashions, just up the road along 48th Avenue. “I think we saw a need to offer an opportunity to other customers to give them another shopping alternative, another shopping experience in Ladner,” says Jill McKnight, Bill and Tracey’s daughter. “We wanted to be able to offer quality clothing, the same as we do at the current store, but at discounted prices.” Jill says there will be a mixture of casual to dressy women’s clothing at the

second location. “We’re going to be continually changing the merchandise that’s in this store. It will be a different expe-

rience. With our existing store we build the merchandise through the season. In this store it’s going to be, once it’s gone, it’s gone. It won’t necessarily be the same merchandise coming in again.” Shoppers can browse at their own pace at Outlet Fashions, she says. “There’s a lot of custom-

ers who like the experience of flipping through the racks and feeling like they’re discovering it as opposed to having it all put together for them.” Outlet Fashions is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 5046-48th Ave. “We go back to factories back east and quite often we see stuff that doesn’t quite fit into South Coast Casuals but it’s nice merchandise, it’s at a great price and we’ll bring some of it in here,” says Bill McKnight. Tsawwassen poet Stephen Collis wins B.C. Book Prize BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Tsawwassen poet Stephen Collis has won a B.C. Book Prize. His 2010 release On the Material was announced as the winner of the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize last month. Collis said he’s happy his work received that kind of recognition. “My poetry is a little bit political, not in an elec-

toral politics sense, but in a what’s going on in the world in a big way sense, and it’s nice to see that kind of work can be seen as valid — that poetry’s not just about being lonely, sad or in love ... but it can be a place where you think through problems,” he said. On the Material came about through a long poem Collis wrote about the politics of travelling. “I was thinking about environmental things and

the fact that when we travel we do lots of damage to the world,” he said in a previous interview. While Collis was surprised to be nominated, it was a lot more of a surprise to win. He knows some of the other poets who were nominated and said they’re “wonderful writers” who’ve published a lot of books. Collis, who teaches American literature, poetry and poetics at SFU, has written three other books

Southpointe Academy students will present the musical Gone Missing this week. It will mark the Canadian premiere of the play, says director and Southpointe drama teacher Greg Kean. “I think that’s kind of a coup,” he says, noting the play debuted in New York and has also been performed in London. Gone Missing is from a New York theatre company, called The Civilians, which performs “investigative theatre.” The group picks a theme and goes out and interviews real people, says Kean. For “this one, it’s all about nostalgia and how we feel about things we’ve lost,” he says. “They’d pick the people who gave the most interesting answers and then they’d portray those people.” The Southpointe students in the show, who range from grades 9 to 12, are

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW Food security is a hot topic these days, one that has made its way to South Delta due to a variety of development pressures being exerted on this community. There’s one school of thought that, to oversimplify matters, suggests we’ll be unable to feed ourselves if we continue to pave over farmland. There’s certainly some validity to that argument, but where I have trouble with it is the assumption we’ll continue to produce food the way it’s always been done. From the way we interact with each other and the world around us to pretty much every other aspect of our everyday lives, technology has profoundly and permanently changed the way we live. Technology has also impacted food production. You only have to look at the many greenhouses that dot our landscape to see how it’s evolving. They might not be as pastoral as green fields or grazing animals, but they sure are effective. I’m not trying to be a shill for the greenhouse industry, or for development interests for that matter, but improved technology, whether it’s to the benefit of soil-based farmers or those who grow under glass, is changing the way we produce food. Go to the B.C. Greenhouse Growers’ Association’s website and the stats are eye opening, including this one: Greenhouses account for about 11 per cent of the province’s total agriculture production value yet they take up only 0.01 per cent of B.C.’s total farmland. Granted, they’re primarily growing only three crops — tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers — but they’re doing so with amazing efficiency. You’re telling me that can’t be duplicated, at least to some extent, with many other commodities? We are an affluent, technologically advanced society, so I’m not ready to buy the argument that we’ll soon be dependent on foreign countries for our food, only to be held hostage and charged outrageous prices. There’s no getting around the fact a growing population is putting pressure on our land base, but we shouldn’t shortchange good ol’ Canadian ingenuity. Swapping vast tracts of land to grow crops for the much more compact greenhouses is a bit like replacing that bulky old filing cabinet with a computer hard drive: you get the same results, they just come in a smaller package. I’m not suggesting we scrap the Agricultural Land Reserve and let developers run amok because we can grow all our food in hothouses, but at the same time I don’t believe widespread famine is around the corner either.

Hard to maintain idyllic places when we keep adding to them DEBBIE McBRIDE

COMMUNITY COMMENT I’ve noticed lately that development projects tend to promote their locations near seaside towns or surrounded by the serenity and beauty of farmland, declaring them to be a charming places to live. It all sounds pretty great and who wouldn’t want to savour and live in such idyllic places? This is something we are all familiar with, yet I fail to see anywhere that says such idyllic conditions are subject to changes that could be wrought when the project and others that could follow will alter the very atmosphere being sold. I know folks who moved to new projects in Metro Vancouver seeking that very lifestyle. Yet now their dream has become a nightmare of traffic, overcrowded schools and services. Trying to get their chil-

dren enrolled in any sort of activity requires them to queue up hours in advance. Who’s got time to enjoy any lifestyle when your life has become a hurry-up-and-wait existence? This is happening all over Metro Vancouver as residents are being convinced by planners that more people squished together is the best and only idea for communities. Homes and malls are being built on farmland and new, shiny and manufactured neighbourhoods are being sold as substitutes for older and likely renovated homes in established areas. Older neighbourhoods are being torn down piece-by-piece and densified with the dream that we’ll still be able to recapture the small town feel by squeezing in more people. Yet trying to recreate those old neighbourhoods is often like casinos in Las Vegas pretending to be something they are not. There are many neighbourhoods and small towns in Metro Vancouver that are being vilified for trying to truly maintain all the virtues being sold in large development projects being offered up as an ideal lifestyle. Shiny microcosms where the reality is often

very different from the dream and people often feel let down and cheated when what was envisioned fails to become a reality. Slowing down to accommodate kids on bikes and stroller brigades on sidewalk-less streets are not everyone’s cup of tea. Renovating an older, character home is not a project all would embrace, yet there are those who do want to truly experience the courtesy and charm of a slow moving, less than modern small town and make sacrifices to do so. We need to make an effort to save these kinds of areas wherever we can, because there is value to them, though admittedly it won’t be easy. I know lack of affordability for young people and the elderly is a truth wherever you reside in Metro Vancouver. However, let’s not fool ourselves into believing that more translates into cheaper. Suddenly there is pressure for more roads and more services. That costs money. How long will these old areas and towns remain after the push of development takes place? Will they continue to be places of charm? One can only hope so.

A12 The Delta Optimist May 11, 2011 Letters to the Editor

The hilarious comedy by Norm Foster

The Tsawwassen Arts Centre 1172 56th Street, Tsawwassen May 11 to May 21 (Wed to Sat) 8:00 pm May 15 (Sunday matinee) 2:00 pm

The Foursome is staged by arrangement with Pam Winter, Gary Goddard Agency, 10 St. Mary St. #305, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M4Y 1P9, goddard@canadaHlm.com, www.garygoddardagency.com

Editor: Re: Vision never sees light of day, May 6 As longtime residents of Tsawwassen, our family has been very much involved in the ongoing Southlands saga and would like to address the comments made in the article. The Southlands was purchased from a developer when his attempt to get approval for residential development failed. Century Group was aware from the outset there were risks involved in buying this property on speculation and has proceeded with caution. Century Group president Sean Hodgins formed the Southlands Community Planning Team, asking the Delta residents to contribute to the design of his proposed residential development. The members now feel they were not given the opportunity to share their vision for the Southlands,

particularly with the mayor and council. Proud of their contribution to the project design, this group remains convinced that saying “no” to the proposal is based on the ignorance of those in opposition. They persist in the belief the residents of the community are small minded, uninformed and negative. Rest assured the community understands their vision for the Southlands. The marketing of the project was extensive, inclusive and expensive and despite the tours, open houses, colourful brochures, a site model and endless public meetings, the majority of residents do not share their well-publicized vision. The question is not and never has been: What type of residential development do you want on the Southlands? Sue Lloyd states in the

article: “Then all of a sudden this group appears calling themselves Southlands the Facts and they get invited to this summit, but where’s our voice?” Really? This group came out of nowhere? Southlands the Facts has played a major role in this debate from the beginning. Spokespersons Dana Maslovat and Richard Kunz are representatives for the community group that supports the Southlands ALR inclusion application. They were invited to attend the summit to discuss alternative visions for the Southlands within the current agricultural designation and did not discuss or negotiate future uses for the land that involved a change in designation. The Southlands Community Planning Team’s voice was heard through and represented by the developer, Hodgins.

The summit organized by Mayor Lois Jackson was ill advised and inappropriate. Under the guise of compromise, the mayor ignored the will of the majority to return the Southlands to the ALR and gave Century Group the opportunity to submit a revised proposal for review by Delta council in September. Outrageous! Of the 1,486 people within Delta who have written mayor and council, 985 (66 per cent) support the ALR application. The Ipsos Reid survey shows 63 per cent support for the Southlands designation to remain agricultural. We live in a democracy — one person, one vote and no matter how influential or how many threats you make about greenhouses and pig farms, if you’re in the minority, you don’t get to decide for the majority. Make new animal shelter a priority

LEIG M5 GM6+ (3.

Editor: Re: Civic officials must find animal shelter new home due to disruption caused by highway construction, letter to the editor, May 4 I would like to commend Donna McKay for speaking out about the appalling conditions the Delta Community Animal Shelter finds itself in due to the adjacent construction of the South Fraser Perimeter Road. I, too, was appalled at how close the road is coming to the animal shelter. It is so stressful and confusing for these poor animals to be in a shelter in the first place and to place them under

+)%$&#' *()"!# '36+ M5 : 3E. 9O+9K 3EGGM35) 5+C I+7+9

further stress with construction noise is just plain cruel. Think of how disrupting it is to have construction in your own neighbourhood and then think about these poor creatures that have no voice and no choice. I commend the very hard working shelter staff that must watch this day after day. They are amazing and do their best for the animals in their care. This shelter needs a peaceful environment. Delta council should be looking out for all its residents, not just the two-legged ones, and needs to move this up on the priority list immediately. Rose Meyer

Socialist criticisms off mark

Editor: Re: Lefties get foothold in Canada despite failures all over world, Community Comment, May 4 I am continually mystified as to why Dan Southard’s uneducated blatherings get such a central focus in your publication. His latest column criticizing socialism with blanket statements with no basis in fact is a good example. He needs to inform himself of a few key points: the only provincial governments

with balanced budgets within recent memory have all been NDP. Two of the most successful countries in the world — Sweden and Norway — are both run on socialist principles. And let us not forget our illustrious Conservative government inherited a surplus from the Liberals and proceeded to rack up the largest deficit in Canadian history. As for choosing poverty, tell that to the woman who has escaped an abusive husband and is struggling

to make ends meet with no decent daycare and trying to maintain a household on a single income. Or how about those aboriginal kids who grow up in isolated reserves with no ready access to post-secondary education? Do they really have a choice? We need a government that makes policy decisions based on social justice principles. Southard is clearly not familiar with the concept. I suggest he finds out about it. Jane McCall

Better management of public money needed

Editor: The Delta school board is making cuts — yet again. Property taxes are going up — yet again. All while Delta’s parks and recreation department is building a water park at Diefenbaker Park. As far as I know, and I live within one block of the park, no one asked for this water park. I have several objections: 1. We live within five

minutes of the beach, the best beach in the Lower Mainland with lots of water and an excellent playground. We don’t need a water park that will be functional for two to three months a year. 2. The municipality will have to maintain this water park at some unknown cost for the rest of our lives. 3. Every year, Delta plants trees and rhododendrons at Diefenbaker Park

Runners aren’t the only ones at risk Editor: Re: Beautiful path spoiled by loose dog, letter to the editor, April 30 While he is at it, Brent Wladichuk should encourage runners and cyclists to blow a whistle or ring a bell when approaching pedestrians on the dike. Pat Cash

and then it doesn’t water them and they die, and then it plants more the next year with the same fate. Why did somebody get a contract for such an obviously unnecessary and undesirable expenditure when educational needs are being ignored and taxes are being raised? We must demand better management of our money. Cecilia Tanner Editor’s note: The water park is a joint initiative of Delta and the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen.

Earpiece is a sure sign of VIP status

Close encounter with fellow mall shopper shows even popular people have to pick up a few things for dinner BARBARA GUNN

LIVING MATTERS You can always identify a Very Important Person. A Very Important Person does not have a phone in a purse or in a pocket, or in a charger on the wall. A Very Important Person has a phone on an earpiece that’s always attached to, well, the ear. Very Important People do this because they are also Very Popular People. They receive calls frequently, so frequently, I suppose, that it would be near impos-

sible — or an utter pain, at the very least — to have to retrieve the phone from a handbag. “Oh look,” I said to the husband the other day. We were in a shopping mall. There, not less than 10 feet from where we were, stood a Very Important Person. “Look!” I said again, grabbing the husband’s elbow. “It’s somebody Really Important! I wonder if he’s in the movies! Or the NHL!” The husband looked at me. “He has the earphone!” I whispered. Yes, he had the earphone, but he had something else besides, something that proved — without the pro-

This, even though there wasn’t a ray of sunlight in the mall. “Oooh,” I said. “We should find an autograph book. Do you think this store sells autograph books?” “No,” said the husband. “It sells runners.” I looked around. The hus-

I listened in, expecting to hear the details of the signing of a contract. “Bill here,” the Very Important Person said. And then: “Oh, hi. Yeah, OK. Potatoes. Sour cream. And what’s that? Lettuce?” I shook my head in amazement. Very Important People, it occurred to me, may need their earphones and their shades to make clear they’re Very Special. But sometimes they do the most regular things. Even they go shopping for dinner.

fared well enough to knock the Liberals out of official Opposition status. Liberal party leader Michael Ignatieff announced a day later he would step down. The Optimist asked:

Conservative candidate Kerry-Lynne Findlay was victorious in DeltaRichmond East while the Tories also claimed enough seats for a majority government during last week’s federal election. The NDP

What do you think of the election results?

Alex Dowsett For Delta, it was predictable. It’s a Conservative riding. Federally, it was a surprise ... the NDP doing so well and it’s unfortunate that we have a Conservative government.

Gary Haylow Not exactly what I was hoping for. I’m more of a middle of the road guy.

Devils & Pacers in the mix at Valley championships The South Delta Sun Devils finally have some nearby company for this week’s Fraser Valley “AAA” Girls Soccer Championships. Under longtime coaches Stephen Burns and Brent Sweeney, the Devils have become a perennial powerhouse and are a virtual lock each season to be part of the 16-team tournament. The same can’t be said for cross-town rivals Delta Pacers who return to the championships for the first time in recent memory. The Ladner school nailed down a playoff spot with an impressive 3-1 home field win over the Tamanawis Wildcats last week to finish league play with a 3-1-3 record. They opened play yesterday against Charles Best of Coquitlam and are guaranteed at least one more game in the double knockout event which continues tomorrow. The Pacers’ breakthrough season was poised to happen given the success of the Ladner Attack at the community club level. The Attack have enjoyed one of the most decorated runs in the history of Ladner Girls Soccer, winning a pair of Coastal Cups and a provincial championship. Not only does the majority of the roster attend DSS, the U17 Gold team happens to be coached by principal Terry Ainge. While the Pacers are enjoying their run in unchartered waters, the Sun Devils have also exceeded expectations given the few seniors on their roster. Sure the team knew it would be in the playoff picture, since it qualified for the

provincial tournament a year ago, yet a perfect (7-0) in league play and earning the top seed for the Valley championships were an added bonus. South Delta enters this week’s play having lost just once all year — an early season exhibition game against Richmond’s McMath Wildcats — with the results also including a tournament win in Kamloops and an unbeaten run in Victoria. If anything the Devils, look to be ahead of schedule with the program poised to take a serious run at its second provincial title. “These girls are getting an opportunity to play together for a couple of years which is always a big advantage,” said Sweeney. “It’s a nice surprise to get the top seed but the Valleys are always tough and we will have to be ready.” Nine players on the team are also part of the girls soccer academy at the school which is run by Burns. “It’s definitely an advantage,” continued Sweeney, who added academy students from outside the SDSS catchment area are not allowed to play. “Just getting the extra training two or three times a week and working with Stephen is going to go a long way.” As the top seed, the Sun Devils enjoy home field advantage throughout the Valley playoffs and faced Heritage Woods yesterday in round of 16 play. A quarter-final date with Queen Elizabetth or Chilliwack looms tomorrow. All games are played at the Winskill turf field.

Ladner forward goes in second round of Bantam Draft Mitch Walter surprised to be picked by Edmonton while South Delta teammate Phoenix Worth is selected by to Lethbridge MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

As a Pee Wee call-up player two years ago, Mitch Walter realized just exactly what he could accomplish. On Thursday, he jumped on the very same path taken by South Delta Minor Hockey grads Ryan Olsen and Steven Hodges as a second round pick of the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. “Ever since they were picked I have been thinking about,” admitted the 5-foot-10, 151-pound centre from Ladner. “I got a chance

to play with those guys and later at a post-season skate, they were wearing all their new gear. I was still a young kid but at least I could relate to it better.” Walter was one of just two members of the South Delta Bantam AAA Storm to go in the draft. Defenceman Phoenix Worth was taken in the 10th round by the Lethbridge Hurricanes, following what has become somewhat of tradition. Worth is the third local blueliner to be picked by the Hurricanes in recent memory, joining current Chicago Blackhawks star Brent Seabrook and 2010 WHL second

round pick Macoy Erkamps. Both Walter and Worth helped their stock at the recent B.C. U16 in Kamloops which featured the top 1996-born players in the province and was heavily attended by WHL scouts. Walter has been considered one of B.C.’s top prospects since last fall and came on strong over the second half of the season, helping the Storm earn promotion to tier one status, then producing five goals and three assists in four games at the B.C. Cup. “There was definitely lots of pressure especially when you hear you’re one of the top 10 players in the province,” he said.

“But I was happy with the way the season went.” He admits he was surprised to be picked by the Oil Kings, having talked to them just once throughout the season, while Prince Albert was in contact with him “three or four times.” Walter describes himself as “strong skater, who like to go to the net and scores goals.” He captained the Storm this past season and credits his development to the Hockey Academy at South Delta secondary where he is currently enrolled for his Grade 9 year. “I wouldn’t be where I am as a player today without it,” he

added. “Just doing those three extra sessions a week makes such a big difference.” Walter will be traveling to Edmonton at the end of the month to attend a prospects camp, then focus on off-season workouts under Vancouver Giants strength and conditioning coach Ian Gallagher. His goal is to advance through to the Oil Kings main training camp, then play next season for the Greater Vancouver Canadians of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League. He got a taste of the BCMMHL as a call-up player for the Canadians this past season.

Thank You

The Ladner Lawn Bowling Club's annual Plant, Garage and Bake fundraiser held last weekend was an unqualified success again this year. As the club is funded by its membership the proceeds of this event are vital for the club operating costs. The participation of so many members of the community was sincerely appreciated. Thank you for coming and we hope to see you all again next year.

All Aboard For:

Pitching standout Carling Hare of Ladner has made a verbal commitment to continue her softball career at Simon Fraser University next fall. After receiving offers and interest from numerous programs south of the border, Hare decided to stay close to home to study Pre Law at the Burnaby Mountain campus and play for SFU head coach Mike Renney. Hare began her career at the age of five, playing at the T-ball level with the Ladner Minor Fastpitch Association. She later would join the South Delta Invaders rep program before moving to the White Rock Renegades in 2008. She is now a member of the Surrey ’93 Storm Gold team. In 2010, her first season with the Storm, Hare posted a 13-3 record, recording 59 strikeouts in 74 innings pitched, while surrendering just 12 walks. She posted a 1.99 ERA. Hare is also a member of the Great Britain national U19 and senior women’s team. She will be playing for Great Britain at the inaugural Canadian Open Fastpitch Championships, slated for July 9-17 at Softball City. The tournament takes the place of the Canada Cup.

Delta rowers thriving at Vancouver Island school

Delta rowers and Shawnigan Lake students Graeme Dawe, Robert Bracken, Saeed Naguib, and Jordan Johl excelled at the 41st Brentwood Regatta, winning gold in the Senior Boys Lightweight Eight event. Dawe, Bracken and Naguib also won gold in the Lightweight Four event and have experienced a remarkable journey as rowers to reach the podium in their Grade 12 year at the Vancouver Island school. As a result of their academic and rowing achievements, the soon-to-be graduates have offers in hand from prestigious

international, American and Canadian universities. The Brentwood Regatta is one of the largest high school events of its kind in North America and annually attracts more than 1700 athletes from the west coast of the continent. This year, the competition came from California, Oregon, Washington, B.C. and as far away as Australia. This weekend, Shawnigan Lake will be hosting its own regatta and is expecting a tremendous turnout.

Berekoff’s eight point night leads Junior Islanders past Timbermen Mike Berekoff netted a hat trick and added five assists as the Delta Islanders rolled to an impressive 14-6 road victory over the Nanaimo Timbermen in B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League action. The third-year veteran from Ladner scored twice in the the opening period as the Islanders jumped out to a 4-2 lead and never looked back en route to their second win of the season in three starts.

Mike Mallory also had a productive outing with four goals and one assist. Team captain Ryan Keith and Matt Messenger scored twice, with singles going to Issey Lamb, Andrew Schwab and Trenton Matsuzaki. Chris Jones added three assists. Delta returns to action on Saturday when the Langley Thunder visits the Ladner Leisure Centre at 7:30 p.m.
