Cummins is calling it a career
After almost 18 years in Ottawa, popular Conservative MP announces he won’t be seeking re-election BY

Longtime Delta-Richmond East Conservative MP John Cummins won’t be running in the next federal election, which could be just around the corner. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office announced last weekend that Cummins, an MP since 1993, as well as Treasury Board president Stockwell Day (Okanagan-Coquihalla) and Transport Minister Chuck Strahl (Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon) won’t be running for the Conservatives in the next federal election.

Cummins also made the announcement to local riding association members Saturday. Saying he was tired of the long cross-country trips to Ottawa, Cummins confirmed his retirement plans with the Optimist Monday. It’s not clear, however, if he’ll leave politics completely. He said he hasn’t made a decision, as of yet, on taking a greater role, and perhaps leading, the B.C. Conservative Party. Unlike the nomination process to find his replacement federally, Cummins has plenty of time to decide if he’ll take over the provincial Conservatives, who will select their leader May 28. As far as who will become the federal Conservative candidate in this riding, that will be decided as soon as next Monday. As of Monday, at least four candidates have already surfaced to replace Cummins, and more could follow, prior to a nomination meeting at the Sundance Inn in East Ladner.

DeVries and Saip eyeing Tory nomination
Constituency association in hurry to find replacement as meeting set for next Monday BY

It looks like there will be at least two prominent Delta names in the running for the nomination to replace Conservative MP John Cummins in Delta-Richmond East.
Former Delta Chamber of Commerce president Maria DeVries confirmed she would be seeking the nomination at the Conservative riding association’s meeting in East Ladner next Monday. DeVries, who ran third in the Delta council by-election last
fall and was poised to run for the Liberals in the 2009 provincial election before stepping aside for Wally Oppal, has been involved in several different community causes and local organizations. While she has experience with politics and is on the riding association’s board, she has never been
elected to office. Also expected to have his nomination papers filed is longtime Delta school board chair Dale Saip. He confirmed his interest in running Monday. The veteran trustee, first electSee NOMINATION page 3
