After more than 10 years together, Mike Bryan made this Valentine’s Day extra special for girlfriend Janna Becker.

Bryan stunned Becker with an unusual marriage proposal at Captain’s Cove Marina in Ladner Monday afternoon.

Thinking she was at the marina for work, Becker was surprised when Bryan pulled up to the gas dock on Arktos Developments Ltd.’s evacuation craft. Clad in a tuxedo, and wearing a huge smile, Bryan jumped off the vessel and, after presenting Becker with a single red rose, he got down on one knee and asked her to be his wife.

“I was totally surprised,” Becker said afterwards.

She said yes.

Bryan said he decided to use

the Arktos evacuation craft as part of his proposal because the couple met when he started working there more than a decade ago.

“We were both coming from bad relationships and neither of us were looking to get back into a relationship,” Bryan said.

“We met at a time when I didn’t have a home of my own and I was broke,” he said.

“Janna never judged me and was there for me throughout the rough times...

There was something very special about Janna with her great smile and infectious laugh that made me know that I wanted her to be in my life.”

Bryan said that not once over the last 10 years has Becker pressured him to get married.

“So, after 10 years, I saved up, got the rock that she deserves and I am getting ready to propose,” he said in an e-mail to the Optimist prior to the big event.

The chairman of the Delta Chamber of Commerce board says planning about to get underway for container terminal expansion at Roberts Bank is a positive step for trade, but it’s important for the community to be part of the process.

In an interview with the Optimist, John Appleby said with growing trade, the key for Delta is to make sure there’s a facility that can move containers through as quickly as possible “With the weight of the world’s commerce shifting to the Pacific Rim, with the nature of the way we transport containers and bulk goods, there’s certainly a requirement in a change in the way we do it,” said Appleby.

“Our view is that there’s a certain inevitability and most of it for the foreseeable future will have to come through Delta. The biggest part we can do right now is make sure we’re part of managing the process.”

Port Metro Vancouver last week announced it’s launching what it calls the Container Capacity Improvement Program. It’s a long-term strategy focusing on increasing container handling capacity at Lower Mainland ports, with particular emphasis on Roberts Bank.

“This is the start of a long-term program that we see Terminal 2 being an integral part of. If you look at where we are, we

had that great recession over the last couple of years and now see a very strong rebound to the extent where we are already back to record volumes,” said president and CEO Robin Silvester in an interview at the time.

“I don’t suppose we’ll ever get to a position we don’t know the port is there, but we can certainly remain in a position where it doesn’t seriously impact our lives.”

Last year, the port authority opened a third berth at the Deltaport container terminal at Roberts Bank. An entirely new three-berth facility, T2, has been talked about for several years.

Noting environmental studies and community consultation will take place, Silvester said T2 could be up and running by 2020.

The group Against Port Expansion issued a letter to Delta council in response, noting a second terminal will create traffic nightmares for Delta.

“The port currently generates close to 2,000 truck trips a day. Imagine what highways 17 and 99 are going to be like when there are well over 5,000 truck trips a day. No, the South Fraser Perimeter Road will not help — most of the port trucks use the (George) Massey Tunnel and some go

along River Road,” APE’s letter stated.

Appleby, meanwhile, said the design of the South Fraser Perimeter Road is a concern for the municipality and chamber.

He said at several key points the road will have traffic lights instead of interchanges, which will slow traffic.

“If you decide we’re going to be part of the process in managing the material through the community by whatever means appears practical, and we’re certainly discussing with the Port of Vancouver their ability to move containers by barge up the river and by different techniques, that should be addressed,” he said.

“I don’t suppose we’ll ever get to a position we don’t know the port is there, but we can certainly remain in a position where it doesn’t seriously impact our lives,” Appleby added.

The prospect of T2 was also discussed at Delta council’s weekly meeting Monday.

A staff report noted several concerns, including the separation of the T2 application from the third berth application a few years ago.

The potential impacts associated with the T2 are being viewed as the same as those from the third berth expansion, only on a much larger scale.

It raises issues regarding the need to assess the cumulative impacts of both developments together, according to Coun Bruce McDonald.

McDonald said whenever environmental studies are done, they should include the impacts to the residents of the community as well.

Coun. Robert Campbell agreed, noting he’d like to see a comprehensive business case that demonstrates the necessity of T2.

Three levels of gov’t unite to address bullying Forum to be held at North Delta Recreation Centre next Wednesday, which is Anti-Bullying Day across Canada Delta North NDP MLA Guy Gentner, NewtonNorth Delta Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal and Mayor Lois Jackson have come together again to host a forum on bullying.

It’s set for Wednesday, Feb. 23, which is AntiBullying Day in Canada.

The three politicians first came up with the idea after they met with Maureen Chatham, whose daughter was murdered in 2008.

“After meeting with Mrs. Chatham, we had a discussion about what we as politicians could be doing in our community to help victims of violence. We discussed a forum on domestic

violence, but then decided that the symptoms of violence go much further than that,” said Gentner.

“Violence permeates our society in a variety of ways; different types of bullying are part of what could transcend into other forms of violence.”

The Anti-Bullying Forum — Take a Stand/Lend a Hand, being held at the North Delta Recreation Centre, is the first of what Jackson hopes will be the beginning of Delta coalescing resources.

“I envision a clearing house of sorts; a place where anyone can go to enquire about resources

available in Delta and how to access them. We could also institute a ‘hotline’ for those who wanted or needed anonymity. There are many wonderful organizations attempting to address this problem,” says Jackson.

“What is needed now, however is a coordinated effort to streamline all these resources and systems allowing anyone to simply and immediately access the proper resources. We are all working aggressively to that end.”

Delta resident and wellknown broadcaster Simi Sara will be the emcee for the forum. Featured speakers include Cindi Seddon,

author and co-founder of the Bully’s Beware program in Coquitlam; Jesse Miller, a national expert on cyberbullying; and others who will present their personal stories.

The forum will examine the reasons why children bully their peers, the types of bullying, the effects of bullying and what can be done to stop it.

“This is an important issue for everyone at all levels of government,” says Dhaliwal, “Finding a way to come together municipally, provincially and federally to help meet the need and to show unity of this issue will only help our commu-

Kittygate is just another example how membership sign-up rules need an overhaul, says Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington.

The independent member of the legislature, who decided to run on her own in the last election due to her discontent over what’s happened to the party system in the province, was asked her thoughts about

the recent controversy and infighting among the Liberal leadership candidates over membership irregularities.

The problems were highlighted when a cat belonging to a supporter of leadership candidate Christy Clark was signed up as a party member.

“The issue is across all parties and, for me, it’s a really distasteful part of the nomination processes. It has to be changed and parties

have to reconsider who do they want to control these very important nomination processes, a bunch of newcomers who know nothing about the internal workings of the party?” asked Huntington.

The cat in question belongs to Kristy Wawryk, the Liberal riding association president for Delta South, who could not be reached for comment about her kitty’s membership.

A raccoon that was electrocuted and lost its tail last month has recovered and was released last Thursday.

The animal “made a great recovery,” said Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. communications co-ordinator Yolanda Brooks. The raccoon, which had to undergo surgery to remove the remaining portion of its tail, fell after climbing up a transformer tower on Annacis Island.

Delta to meet with school district to discuss high priority projects

Civic and school board officials will try to work something out in order to get new playground equipment installed at local schools.

The council/school board liaison committee is scheduled to look at a potential list of higher priority projects this Thursday.

The issue of a lack of municipal money for the cost-sharing projects was recently raised by the parent advisory committee at Holly Elementary in East Ladner, which was alarmed to find out Delta’s playground equipment budget for 2011 was already

cleaned out.

That was due to council agreeing to provide $130,000 in a cost-sharing arrangement with the Tsawwassen Rotary Club, which is building a $275,000 waterpark at Diefenbaker Park.

A recent letter to council by the Holly PAC noted its application for a matching grant was submitted early last November, while the formal waterpark application was submitted more than a month later.

At Delta council’s weekly meeting Monday, Mayor Lois Jackson, noting Delta has provided funding for over a dozen school playgrounds in the last few years, said people should

understand school playgrounds are school district, not municipal, properties.

Thus, Delta should be approached last when it comes to looking for funding partners, she said.

Coun. Ian Paton, saying both his kids attended Holly, noted the playground is clearly worn out. He said he hopes something can be arranged because the area is filled with many young families that would utilize a better playground.

Coun. Anne Peterson agreed, but noted the loss of gaming grants has resulted in parent groups relying on local government for grant funding.

Victoria rescinded its playground grant program,

which was used by hundreds of schools to build playgrounds, last year.

Gaming grants for preschools, childcare centres and resource centres were substantially reduced.

Several of the Liberal leadership candidates have promised to restore gaming grant dollars.

MURPHY’S LAW At first blush, it appears Delta’s efforts to put the Southlands back in the Agricultural Land Reserve are about the worst thing that could happen to Sean Hodgins and his plans for Tsawwassen’s most controversial piece of real estate.

That could well turn out to be the case, but there’s also the possibility this move contains one heck of a silver lining for the president of the Century Group.

Should Delta make the application, and the Agricultural Land Commission approve the inclusion of the Southlands, in its entirety, in the ALR, it would obviously spell the end for Hodgins’ development aspirations. But what happens if the ALC rejects the application, like it did in 1992, or what if only a portion of the land is deemed worthy of being included in the ALR? Those scenarios, which are very real possibilities, would, in my opinion, actually boost Hodgins’ chances of seeing some form of development finally take place on the property his family has owned for the last two decades.

After watching the community debate the viability of that farmland ad nauseam, the thinking at municipal hall appears to be that the land commission is best suited to make such a determination.

The move could certainly be construed as more buck passing by local politicians, and voluntarily putting what is a Delta issue under the control of provincial officials, but if you’re looking for impartial experts, and this controversy could surely use some of them, it’s not a bad place to turn.

However, we have to be prepared to live with the results.

If a chunk of the property is not deemed fit for the ALR, then Hodgins is left with zoning that’s incongruent with the land’s capability. There’s nothing to say you can’t farm land that’s outside the ALR, but it hardly seems fair to tell the owner he must till soil the experts have deemed unworthy for inclusion in the reserve.

If that were the case, I suspect Hodgins would have a pretty good legal argument that any land rejected by the ALC should see its zoning altered to reflect that outcome.

Where that would leave Delta is unclear, but it’s safe to say that anything short of total inclusion in the ALR, which has to be considered a remote possibility, is going to renew the development debate for the Southlands.

Should we get to that point, the property owner would likely come back to the table, and in an ironic twist, could actually be in a stronger position than when this whole process started.

Public can’t let up in fight to preserve valuable farmland DEBBIE McBRIDE

COMMUNITY COMMENT Isn’t it interesting how differently agricultural land is viewed in the 21st century from the 20th?

Much of the last century was about progress and the mantra often heard when ordinary citizens questioned the decisions being reached by governments was: “You can’t fight city hall.”

To fight city hall was seen as (1) pointless; (2) standing in the way of progress; (3) too hard to do; and (4) subversive. Yet, in the 21st century, we have seen not only city hall fought but governments at all levels being called to account for their decisions.

In Delta, maybe because we are surrounded by agricultural land and are home to a very significant bog, its residents became leaders in the fight to preserve both. Putting a finger on why that happened really

doesn’t matter, what does matter is that it happened.

Delta residents, both North Delta and South Delta, crossed their Rubicon over 20 years ago fighting city hall and have realized significant success in raising awareness of and saving significant parts of Burns Bog and agricultural land.

While it’s tempting to pat ourselves on the back as we hear that Burns Bog is in the process of being declared a RAMSAR site and the Corporation of Delta will be asking the Agricultural Land Commission to have the Southlands returned to the ALR, let’s not. Neither has been achieved and we cannot stop paying attention.

It’s been said that only a portion of the Southlands may be viable for farming and that may be a good reason to return only portions of it back to the ALR. It could then be suggested those portions be developed.

Wouldn’t those not so viable portions be the perfect place to build farm buildings and manage wildlife? That would leave the other portions free to grow crops that can help provide the food security so desperately needed.

That needs to be said and imagined. Get out to the March 1 public hearing and support the return of all that land to the ALR and voice support for retaining all ALR land for food production.

Additionally, we face the ongoing South Fraser Perimeter Road, which threatens to become more of an industrialization project than a road and is a serious threat to the ALR land that runs alongside it.

For a very interesting read on that topic, I’d suggest you read Laila Yuile’s Internet blog on the land purchases all along that road.

I recently talked to Ron Emerson of the Emerson Group, a company that specializes in industrial properties, which has been purchasing options on properties north of Highway 17 between 52nd and 64th streets. He confirmed his company has optioned some of this land, which is in the ALR, with an eye to the future.

I appreciated his absolute candour when I asked him if it didn’t concern him that the land was in the ALR. His response? “Well, it is for now.”

To ensure our future food security, that statement needs to change from “for now” to forever.

TransLink proud of SkyTrain, but also willing to look at other technologies

Editor: Am I the only one who finds it ironic that within a few weeks we will have a new premier of B.C., put in place by a handful of party members, while at the same time a petition signed by hundreds of thousands of taxpayers must wait almost a year to be even addressed by the government.

You must also consider the HST petition was a meticulous process

watched over and scrutinized by numerous levels of government bureaucrats, while our new premier will be put in place under the rules of the Liberal party, which seem to allow all levels of shenanigans.

There is something very wrong here, and sometimes I wonder if there is anyone in government, anywhere in the world, who remembers who they work for.

Rapid transit has an enormous impact on how our region grows and develops,

and survey after survey shows it is the most effective in attracting people to public transit.

While Metro Vancouver has clearly valued the benefits of automated light rail with its speed of service, high capacity and efficiency, we agree with Johnston when he correctly points out there are other rapid technologies we should consider as effective and cost-efficient ways to expand our network.

Where we disagree is with his characterization of our SkyTrain system, with its 100 million-plus riders per year, as a “failure.”

Community needs new life Editor: I think it’s absolutely ridiculous the Southlands project gets shut down.

This community of 20plus-year-old houses is getting older by the day.

It would be nice to bring some new life into the community, perhaps some young blood too.

It would also be healthy for the local business owners to gain more clientele before the Tsawwassen First Nation builds its commercial component.

I am all for the develop-

ment of the Southlands and for those of you that don’t think four lanes is enough for traffic to pass through our town, just remember the Trans-Canada Highway was four lanes for generations and it has a million times as many vehicles.

Development ideas lost by putting Southlands in ALR

Editor: The recent decision of Delta council to accept the CAO’s recommendation to recommend the ALC place the Southlands into the Agricultural Land Reserve is wrong for our community.

First, it is clear the CAO is in a conflict of interest position regarding how the Tsawwassen Area Plan has been updated. He and his staff continually prevented serious and rational dialogue on the Southlands plan proposed by the landowner.

The area plan process was hi-jacked early in the game and at no time were the details of Century Group’s plan ever considered seriously by the committee, nor was it ever formally placed before the community for proper evaluation or discussion.

Forty per cent of the Tsawwassen community voted in favour of modest development of the property using the principles of urban agriculture. For such a manipulated, unscientific

and biased poll showing the community has changed from its 95 per cent against any development in 1989 to 40 per cent in favour, suggests considerable support existed despite all attempts to prevent the true value of the plan from coming forward.

And what about the opinions of Ladner and North Delta residents — when were they ever asked for their opinions on the matter?

Century Group does not deserve this behaviour of our council. The Southlands Community Planning Team’s work over a 24month period created a plan that integrated economic farming into the community in an extremely novel way.

It addressed each of the myriad of viewpoints from housing needs for young families and seniors to food security issues to the economics of farming the urban-rural edge.

It contained innovative approaches to reduce the community’s carbon footprint and created a way for

our town to show a new innovative way to deal with farming orphaned land.

It contained synergies that derive from geothermal district heating for communities and irrigation needs for farming that reduced costs for all and could prevent flooding of farmland such as occurred last fall.

These ideas will be lost to Delta but will be picked up somewhere else and applied to rectify how urban communities continue to develop in a piecemeal, sprawling manner.

But that is how Tsawwassen will continue to sustain itself — in an unplanned, poorly optimized fashion that will result in the withering on the vine of our community.

It demonstrates the selfish, whining attitude that permeates our community to not take on our responsibilities for participating in the welfare of future generations of Canadians.

Shame on Delta council and shame on George Harvie.

Group is about resisting all change over-30-years land-development controversy that is all about resisting change and a selfish unwillingness to accommodate a housing demand of an expanding local and Lower Mainland population.

Century Group president Sean Hodgins has shown to be a highly intelligent and ethical young man, with strong family, emotional and professional ties to the Tsawwassen community.

Deferentially receptive to community input over the years, Hodgins’ thoroughly charted Southlands’ development plan has been an exercise in responsibility, while regularly and painstakingly communicated to the community.

The project would see two-thirds of the 538 acres of the Southlands property allocated toward wildlife, community amenities, parkland and urban agriculture, leaving only one-third allocated toward dearly needed new housing at the southern side of the property — by any standard, a conceptual jewel and a future asset of substance to the town’s residents.

As one member of the opposing Save-theSouthlands movement has expressed privately, “The [Southlands controversy] is not about saving farmland, it is about not having change. I don’t want to see any change in Tsawwassen.”

It is this form of uncom-

promising rigidity that only a few years ago garnered our community a slew of state-of-the-art hydro-electric poles towering majestically through its residential neighbourhoods.

To further the endemic madness, a like-minded imperative saw a new Chevron Town Pantry service station centrally re-constructed to serve as the town’s de facto cultural focal point and foundation.

As a Tsawwassen resident on the sidelines, my wistful advice to fellow townsfolk would be to grab Hodgins’ Southlands proposal and run with it like a thief in the night — before it is too late.

First, one must remember that all of the lowland from the base of North Delta’s and Vancouver’s highlands was totally under saltwater.

Delta was not diked and drained until 1894.

You could only access Tsawwassen, Vancouver and New Westminster by boat. Once it was diked, you could only traverse it by horse and wagon.

As housing and businesses moved in, they required even better dikes and drainage to accommodate better

roads for the gas-driven vehicles and to prevent the residents and businesses from being flooded.

You see, all of us need these dikes and drainage or we couldn’t even access Tsawwassen, the port, the ferry terminal or build a railway or highway.

It is all of the people of the region, the province and

Canada to see that these lowlands we call Delta and Richmond are kept well drained and diked.

In lock step with a very vocal group of NIMBY constituents, Paton is unwilling to accept the Southlands’ proven uneconomic viability as commercial farmland.

Shine long gone, Bluey makes inglorious exit BARBARA GUNN

Bluey came to live with us a good 15 years ago. She wasn’t new, but she looked it. Her headlights sparkled and her chrome shone.

When she sat out there in the driveway, you could almost hear her purr.

My husband had found the her. He’d been searching for a vehicle for some time — a little runabout, he’d said, something really good on gas — and he scoured the want ads daily.

“I think we’ve found ourselves a car,” he said one day, waving the newspaper in my face.

Two days later, he brought Bluey home. She was pretty. She was sleek.

She was really good on gas.

But in the beginning, she wasn’t even a “she.” It took some time for us to assign her a gender, let alone a name.

For many years, we

even necked in the car.

Bluey was good. Bluey was good, that is, until the battery went. And then the tires. And the tail lights.

And the radio. And finally, the transmission.

My son grew tired of her. And he found himself something else.

Bluey sat on the property for a good 10 months, getting rustier than ever. Her hood became covered with tree debris, her tires began to flatten, and you could no longer hear her purr.

The tow truck came last Monday.

“Over there,” we told Bill, the man at the wheel, gesturing to a corner of the lot. “The little blue Saturn over there.”

He tipped his hat, backed in his truck and hooked his cables to the car.

The son and I watched silently as Bill rounded the corner, pulling Bluey from behind.

How odd, we thought, as she vanished from view, how odd to see her go. A car, after all, is only a car.

Except when a car has a name.

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington is encouraging community members to nominate worthy individuals for the Order of British Columbia.

The Order of B.C. offers British Columbians an opportunity to take part in the public recognition of individuals who demonstrate outstanding achievement in their particular fields.

called her “Dad’s car” or “the Saturn.” And then — for reasons I cannot remember — Bluey became Bluey.

And Bluey became a gal.

But over time, Bluey became something else: a little less shiny, and a lot less sleek. She didn’t always turn over instantly.

She coughed now and then.

She began to show a car’s equivalent of wrinkles: a little bit of rust.

My husband grew tired of her, and found himself something else.

He handed Bluey’s keys to the son.

The son was thrilled with his first-ever car. He washed Bluey. He waxed Bluey. He hung a deodorizer from Bluey’s rear-view mirror.

A team of volunteers working out of Tsawwassen Alliance Church is gearing up again this year to file income tax returns for people in South Delta.

With a mix of volunteers from the church and community, the program is now in its sixth year. It prepared over 140 returns last year, but with word getting around, there are expectations of handling up to 200 this year.

The process of preparing a simple return can be daunting for some, and the cost of hiring a professional can be a real burden for lower income people.

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program offered by CRA works within communities across the country to help complete simple tax returns for eligible individuals.

Introduced in 1971, this program was intended to ensure all taxpayers had equal access to the tax system. Each year over 16,000 volunteers associated with nearly 3,000 community partners help more than 500,000 Canadians file their tax returns.

Even if you don’t have tax to pay, you should file to take advantage of certain credits such as the HST rebate and the OAS supplement.

In order to qualify you must meet the following criteria: • $25,000 or less income for a single individual • $35,000 for a couple or an adult with one child • A simple tax return (no income from rental property, self employment, capital gains) • Investment income should not exceed $1,000 The clinics operate on a drop in basis; no appointments are necessary. They are held on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. during March and April.

South Delta Baptist lends its support to water park

Tsawwassen church donates $5,000 to Rotary project Pastor Paul Johnson of the South Delta Baptist Church was at the Tsawwassen Rotary Club’s meeting last week to present a $5,000 donation towards the club’s WaterWorks project at Diefenbaker Park.

Club president Rick Lewall and committee chair Vicki Sangster thanked Johnson and his congregation for being generous community supporters towards a “village hand pump” that will be installed in the water park.

The new park, to be completed by July, will feature various displays on site that detail how citizens in Third

World countries obtain clean water.

The project will also include a children’s water play area, wading pond, meandering stream with bridge and pathways that will greatly enhance the existing facilities at the 1st Avenue park.

Created in partnership

with the Corporation of Delta, the WaterWorks project is budgeted just over $270,000, with the Rotary club committed to half of those funds.

Yoga offers something for everyone Yoga has something for everyone, which may explain why its popularity has grown in recent years.

“I think everyone can do yoga and the sooner they try it, the sooner they’ll feel the benefits,” says Chantal O’Sullivan, who owns Shanti Yoga in Tsawwassen.

O’Sullivan started practicing yoga as a university student and says she fell in love with it from the first class.

“I just floated out of that class.”

She says she was attracted to yoga for the element of relaxation, but soon found the ancient practice can offer much more.

Veggie delights as appetizers JULIE VAN ROSENDAAL As winter lingers and it’s hockey that’s in season, eating on the couch need not mean mindless munching.

Every fall when hockey starts up, the TV spends more time on around our house. And in the evenings, watching TV produces an almost Pavlovian desire for snacks. If we’ve just eaten dinner, which is most often the case, this is not a good thing. Nor is an open bag of Cheezies.

In an attempt to avoid fattening ourselves up for winter, I’ve tried to multi-task at mealtime, coming up with snacky foods you can eat with your fingers, and that can do double duty as dinner or as appetizers.

Green Pea Hummus Hummus is an easy, good-for-you dip that takes five minutes to whiz together. Chickpeas take on other flavours well, so try adding a few roasted peppers, carrots or beets (with a pinch of cumin), a handful of fresh parsley, or some thawed frozen peas.

Hummus gets better with a day or two in the fridge, so it’s great to make ahead and dip into all week.

Makes about 2 cups 1 19-oz. (540 mL) can chickpeas, rinsed and drained 1/2 -1 cup (125-250 mL) frozen peas, thawed 2 tbsp. (25 mL) tahini (sesame seed paste) 1/4 cup (50 mL) plain yogurt

2 garlic cloves, crushed juice of 1 lemon (2 to 3 tbsp./25 to 50 mL) 1/2 tsp. (2 mL) cumin salt to taste 2-4 tbsp. (25-60 mL) olive oil

Put the chickpeas, peas, tahini, yogurt, garlic, lemon juice, cumin and salt in the bowl of a food processor and pulse until pureed. With the motor running, drizzle in the olive oil until the mixture is smooth and has the texture you want. If it’s too thick, add a little extra oil, yogurt or water. Taste and adjust seasonings (salt, pepper, lemon juice, tahini) to suit your taste. Serve with fresh or toasted pita chips and fresh vegetables.

Potato Skins This may seem like an obvious recipe, but cheesy potato skins are a quintessential finger food that you never think to make at home. The spice mixture adds a lot of flavour, and back bacon is much leaner than the breakfast variety.

4 medium baking potatoes canola oil salt and pepper curry powder chili powder 1/4 cup (50 mL) chopped back bacon or turkey pepperoni 2 green onions or a small bunch of chives, chopped 3/4 cup (175 mL) shredded old cheddar cheese salsa and low-fat sour cream

Preheat oven to 400 F (200 C). Poke the potatoes with a fork and bake them directly on the oven rack for about an hour, until tender. Set aside until cool enough to handle.

Cut each potato lengthwise in quarters and scoop out the pulp, leaving a 1/4 inch (6 mm) thick shell. Arrange skins on a baking sheet and brush with a bit of oil. Sprinkle lightly with salt, pepper, curry and chili powder. Bake for another 10 minutes, until crispy. Sprinkle with bacon, green onions and cheese, and bake for another 5 minutes, until the cheese melts. Serve with salsa and low-fat sour cream.

Stretching important to fitness regime For the best results, you should stretch daily.

The beauty of stretching is it can be done anywhere and you don’t need any special equipment. Yoga is a fantastic way to stretch and restore the body. Try attending yoga classes or follow a yoga DVD at home.

Here is a simple stretch routine to do each day: Neck and shoulder stretch: Either standing or seated, tilt your head to one side taking your ear to your shoulder until you feel a gentle stretch along the side of the neck. Repeat to the other side.

Seated chest and shoulder stretch: Either standing or seated, take both hands behind your back and interlace the fingers.

Lift the arms up until you feel a stretch across the front of the shoulders.

Delta homeowners are looking at increases in property tax and utility fees this year. Delta council gave preliminary approval last week to a 2.98 per cent property tax hike, which works out to about $55 for

the average home. The flat rate utility bill is also set to rise by $60, bringing it to $860 for 2011.

South Delta rinks earn B.C. berths

The South Delta secondary curling program will be front and centre at next month’s provincial championships.

Not only will the Sun Devils be hosting the event at the Richmond Curling Club, they will be represented by two rinks after the girls and boys went undefeated at last weekend’s Lower Fraser Valley Playdowns.

Enjoying the comfort of playing on their home ice at the Tunnel Town Curling Club, both South Delta teams went 5-0 to close out the “A” and “B” sides of the tournament.

It was further success for Shawna Jensen’s rink which had already qualified for the provincial junior girls curling championships. Her foursome also includes: Kayla Graham, Kaitlyn Sim, Krista Jensen and Madison McCardell. The group is coached by Ron Graham and has a promising future with the girls ranging from Grades 9-11.

The Sun Devils boys team was supposed to be in a rebuilding year, with only Cody Tanaka returning from last year’s trip to the provincials. However, the additions to the team have come a long way in a short time and proved that they too, are a force to be reckoned with.

Rounding out the team are: Donny MacKIntosh, Jackson MacKinnon, Louie Wong, Alex Masarsky. They are coached by James Brown.

Both rinks’ success wouldn’t have been possible without the terrific support of Tunnel Town.

“We’ve been lucky to establish a bit of a curling dynasty at South Delta, sending boys and girls teams to the provincials for the last three years, and it’s largely due to the incredible volunteer effort and support of members of the Tunnel Town Curling Club,” said Brown. “Ron Graham heads up our afterschool program, and there are a number of Tunnel Town members who help coach the kids.

Now, Erkamps is getting to be part of a multi-sport Games experience that takes place just once every four years. The start of the Canada Winter Games also coincided with the one year anniversary of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

CARLISLE Ronald Howe

29th Oct. 1930 – 14th Feb. 2011 Ron died peacefully in his home with his family at his side.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Ruth, children, Scott (Carolyn), Margaret (Andrew), Sandi (Chris), Dennis, ten grandchildren and his close extended family. He was predeceased by his sister, Ellen Owen (Doug). Ron, a retired Captain of the Vancouver Fire Department was the grandson of the first Vancouver Fire Chief John Howe Carlisle and the third generation in a legacy of Carlisle firefighters. Ron was born and lived in Vancouver until moving to Tsawwassen in his retirement. He enjoyed being active with the Tsawwassen Lawn Bowling Club and travelling with Ruth in their fifth wheel. He will be missed by his family and friends and will be remembered for his integrity and his love and commitment to his wife and family. A celebration of Ron’s life will be held on Saturday February 19th 2011 at 10:30 am at Ladner United Church, 4960 – 48th Ave., Ladner, B.C. Sincere thanks to Delta Fire Department, B.C. Ambulance Service, Delta Hospital, Home Care, and Dr. Hollinger. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Delta Hospital Foundation.

1926-2011

Passed away peacefully with family around her on Feb 8, 2011. Survived by loving husband Rothwell and sons Gerald (Jo-Anne), Donald (Nasrin), Glen (Cathy), Darcy, Daughter Lori (Ken), 10 grandchildren, and one great grandson. Mavis was born in Oyen, Alta., only child of farmers John and Mabel McArthur. Family moved to Surrey in 1942. Mavis worked for BC Telephone Co. for several years, met Rothwell and married in 1946. She lived on Embree Rd. farm and loved raising her 5 children. Retired with Rothwell to Tsawwassen in 1974. Mavis was gifted with music, dancing, limerick writing, and beautiful handwriting. Mavis will be greatly missed by her family.

Memorial service to be held on Sat. Feb. 19, 2011, 2:00pm, at Ladner United Church, 4960 48th Ave. Delta BC. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Delta Hospital Foundation, or charity of your choice, appreciated.

MacLENNAN Elva Margaret (nee Maw) Feb. 16, 1927 - Feb. 6, 2011 Elva died peacefully at home early Sunday, February 6th.

Elva was born at Mona Road, Peel County, Ontario where she grew up on a large farm operated by her father Seward Courtland Maw and her mother Anne May Agar. Elva was the second oldest in the family and had 5 sisters and one brother.

As a young teenager, she worked in the Malton area in a factory building Lancaster aircraft. After WW2 she went to work in Simpson’s in Toronto.

In late 1946 she met her husband Douglas Alan MacLennan at a summer cottage near Wiarton, Colpoys Bay while fishing. They were married April 30, 1949 and purchased a farm near Belwood, Ontario. While living in the Belwood area Elva and her family were members and attended the Belwood United Church. Known as a geat cook and baker she often cooked for farming crews working in the fields and road crews as the cottages were being developed around Belwood Lake. Her apple pie made with Duches apples took 1st prize more than once in the Fergus Fall Fair.

Elva took an active role in the 4H Clubs with her daughters and helping Mrs. Townsend, was a leader for several years.

In 1968, Elva moved with her family to Elora Street in Fergus.

During this time Elva and Doug spent weekends and summers boating throughout Southern Ontario, Muskoka and Georgian Bay. When Doug retired in 1988 they moved to Tsawwassen, British Columbia where they enjoyed several years boating and exploring the West Coast of BC. In 2009 Elva was becoming frail and she and Doug moved into a housing complex - The Waterford in Tsawwassen where they have enjoyed the camraderie of friends and staff. Elva is survived by her husband Doug and four children - Margaret, Ruth, Thomas and Donald. She has five grandchildren - Eric MacLennan Balac, Nickolas Reid MacLennan Whyte, Mitchell Alan MacLennan Whyte, Richard Douglas MacLennan and Rachel Alexandra MacLennan. Please join the family for ’A celebration of life and tea’ was held at the Tsawwassen United Church, on Friday, February 11th.

Anyone wishing to honour Elva’s memory, a donation can be made to Mount Saint Joseph Hospital, Tapestry Foundation for Health Care.

Beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. Predeceased by her husband Archie, parents (Joseph and Nancy Sawchuk), sister Therese. Survived and sadly missed by her sister Marianne, daughter Louise (Raymond Fung), daughter Lorene (Alan Sudeyko) granddaughters Natasha and Carmen Fung and Leah Sudeyko and many friends and family. Josephine (Josie) was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and spent her early years in Mundare Alberta, helping out in the family general store. She attended the University of Alberta, and began her career in teaching.

On June 2, 1954, she married her dear husband Archie and they moved to Rossland, B.C. where Archie worked for the Meteorological Service and Josie taught. Her career was joyfully interrupted when she welcomed her first daughter, Louise, followed by the happy arrival of second daughter Lorene in Edmonton. The family moved to Ottawa in 1960 and Josie returned to teaching in 1962. The family took advantage of their location, with holidays to Florida and the Maritimes. Josie also satisfied her joy for travel with trips with Archie to Russia, Japan, Europe and Mexico. Archie and Josie moved to Tsawwassen in 1981 where they spent the rest of their days. Josie was bereft when Archie passed away suddenly in 2002, but she bravely continued with her passions of gardening, cooking, long walks, trips to Maui and the one pastime dearest to her heart, spending time with her three beloved grandchildren. She was active and independent until close to the end when liver cancer took her life. Many thanks to Dr. Park, the caregivers at Delta Hospital, the wonderful staff and volunteers at the Irene Thomas Hospice and her pastor, who all provided comfort at the end. “Gram” was extremely kind and generous with her time and love for her granddaughters and daughters, whose sorrow at her passing is beyond words. Her spirit and strength will remain in our hearts, never to be forgotten. Service to be held at the Benediction Lutheran Church in Tsawwassen, on Monday February 21, at 2 pm.

No flowers by request. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Irene Thomas Hospice in the name of Josephine Novakowski would be appreciated.
