Property taxes to rise by 2.98% Average home to pay $55 more this year if civic politicians give final approval to hike BY

The average Delta homeowner could see the municipal portion of their property taxes go up by about $55 this year.

Delta council gave preliminary approval Monday night to the 2011 financial plan, which included a

2.98 per cent property tax increase.

Finance director Karl Preuss said the hike works out to an additional $55 on a home assessed at $536,000.

“Each year, Delta council is faced with the challenge of balancing the offering of valued services and programs to residents and

keeping property taxes at a reasonable level,” Preuss stated in his report to council.

“Council has an ongoing objective to find effective, efficient and economical ways to deliver quality services to Delta property owners.”

The 2.98 per cent figure represents a 2.48 per

cent increase for general municipal services and a .5 per cent hike for additional police staffing.

Preuss said staff originally came forward with a proposal that included a larger property tax increase but council asked bureaucrats to come back with a lower rate.

Delta homeowners will

also be paying more for water, sewer and waste removal services this year as civic politicians also gave preliminary approval to new utility rates this week.

A $60 increase to the flat rate utility fee, which covers water, sewer and solid waste services, would push it to $860.

Area plan will permit only modest growth

Document aims to protect Tsawwassen neighbourhoods The proposed Tsawwassen Area Plan given preliminary approval

by Delta council this week contains modest growth while maintaining, to a large extent, the character of single-family neighbourhoods.

While the future of the Southlands and the proposal to place all agricultural land in Tsawwassen in the ALR was the most riveting recommendation in the area plan written by CAO George Harvie, the rest of the document could also result in gradual, but noticeable, changes in the community.

The plan includes allowing the building height limit to increase from four to six storeys, but only in a confined area within the town centre. It keeps the current 1992 town centre growth cap at 1,000 units, which means there’s only addition-

al capacity for 242 units.

The plan also allows infill development throughout Tsawwassen on a “caseby-case” basis with community consultation and input.

A sticking point in last fall’s proposed area plan was a policy to increase density in the neighbourhood adjacent to the town centre. It has been removed after much outcry from homeowners in the area.

Harvie’s recommendations also include increasing the height limit from three to four storeys along the 56th Street corridor north of the town centre, with a small increase in floor space ratio.

Noting the document should be reviewed every five or six years, instead of the almost 20 years since the last plan, Harvie based his recommendations on feedback on the proposed area plan that had been withdrawn last fall.

He also focused, to a large extent, on future

growth on the Tsawwassen First Nation reserve. Harvie noted information provided by the TFN includes approvals for 1,400 to 1,800 residential units, while TFN members have also approved the lease of up to 100 acres along Highway 17 for a potential retail development of up to one million square feet.

Work is expected to be substantially underway by 2014, his report to noted.

The impacts of development on the reserve should be monitored so the Ladner and Tsawwassen area plans can be adjusted, Harvie recommended.

“Given all these considerations, the Tsawwassen Area Plan should reflect that future growth and change will almost exclusively take the form of infill development, and that such growth should be modest in scope.”

The proposed area plan will be subject of a public hearing on March 1.

by Maslovat last year, said she was impressed with Paton’s statement, noting he very much sounded like his father.

“I could not have agreed with Ian’s comments more.

The land needs to be looked at by the professionals.

I think we all have to be prepared for some of it to be excluded and then the community is right back in terms of where it started with trying to come to some conclusion about what those lands might be for,” she said.

Following the council discussion, a disappointed Hodgins was asked as he left council chambers

whether he’d file an objection with the ALC and how much of the land could end up being found not suitable for inclusion in the ALR. Hodgins’ only reply was that he didn’t want to speculate at this point, but he confirmed he would be filing something with the commission.

Hodgins wrote a letter to the mayor and council this week noting Delta already has the power to plan and zone as it wishes.

“It was only about one year ago that I sat with you at the municipal hall as you assured me that you would do your best to find an approach to Southlands that would benefit the community. The present recom-

mendation, by contrast, is a matter of short-term expediency taking precedence over the interests of the citizens of Delta and of agriculture,” he wrote.

During the council discussion, Coun. Heather King pointed out that while roughly 60 per cent of respondents in a mail-out survey preferred maintaining the land for agriculture, only 30 of 611 people who filled out a questionnaire at a public meeting on the Southlands said they wanted the land back in the ALR. Coun. Anne Peterson said Hodgins presented “an elegant” compromise, but it wasn’t supported by the community.

Rather than have farmers or ordinary citizens give their heated opinions on the agricultural viability of the property, Paton said it’s time to allow the experts and agrologists of the ALC examine the land to make a determination how much can be farmed.

Saying it’s unfortunate there’s only been heated arguments and no rational discussions about the future

of the land, Coun. Bruce McDonald, who chaired the area plan committee, said his group never disputed the value of the Southlands for farming. However, the public should be careful for what it wishes because there’s a possibility the ALC will only approve part of the property for inclusion in the ALR, leaving question marks about what to do with the rest.

Saying he was pleased with council’s decision to support the recommendation, as well as Paton’s comments, Southlands the Facts spokesperson Dana Maslovat said he’s confi-

dent most, if not all, of the Southlands will be put back in the land reserve.

“I think there’s different quality in there but that doesn’t mean it can’t be used for food or growing crops. The fact there’s different levels of it doesn’t take away from the fact it’s good agricultural land,” said Maslovat.

“I was pleased to see, knowing his (Paton’s) farming background that somebody with his knowledge and expertise would be in favour of it. When you look at (George) Harvie’s rational and recommendations, it shouldn’t be a surprise. It is a rational decision and what should be done.”

South Delta public schools didn’t rate well in the Fraser Institute’s latest ranking of B.C.’s elementary schools.

A ranking system that has long been controversial, The Report Card on British Columbia’s Elementary Schools 2011 released Monday rated 875 public and private elementary schools across the province.

It’s based on data from the province-wide Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA), tests mandated by the B.C. Ministry of Education that have also been a source of controversy.

“Using the Fraser Institute report card, parents can easily identify schools that show improved academic performance year to year,” said Peter Cowley, Fraser Institute director of school performance studies.

“And if their child’s school is not improving, or has declined, the report card gives parents the information they can use to ask

questions of school administrators and teachers.”

As far as South Delta public elementary schools go, Ladner’s Neilson Grove ranked highest, finishing 107th out of 875 schools.

It finished ahead of English Bluff (225th), Beach Grove (281st), Cliff Drive (375th), Holly (410th), South Park (410th), Ladner (513th) and Hawthorne (624th).

Pebble Hill and Port Guichon were not mentioned in the report card.

A pair of private schools — Southpointe Academy (30th) and Sacred Heart (57th) — fared better. Delta Christian was not included.

Teachers have argued against the validity of the Fraser Institute’s rankings, saying they don’t tell the whole story about a school while misusing the results of the standardized FSA. “Unfortunately, the teachers’ union doesn’t want parents and B.C. taxpayers to see the report card. The union doesn’t want parents to be able to compare schools based on student

assessments, which is why it is battling so hard to halt provincewide standardized testing,” Cowley said.

Cowley said British Columbians are clearly concerned about school improvement, and the Fraser Institute’s report card is the only easily accessible, objective tool that helps them identify whether schools are meeting students’ academic needs However, Delta Teachers’ Association president Paul Steer said the rankings have long been discredited.

“Parents should feel free to set aside the ranking of the Fraser Institute for elementary schools and to know in a general way there are lots of reasons to have confidence in Delta public schools, “ he told the Optimist Monday.

Steer noted standardized tests have a role when used appropriately.

“They can be useful for assessing the effectiveness of your entire system. So if you’re looking for information on how well you’re doing educationally as a

“The use of the FSA data by the Fraser Institute serves a more or less negative agenda that they’re advancing. Teachers, therefore, pay not much or any attention to the Fraser Institute rankings. We also believe that increasingly members of the public can see how shallow and inappropriate these rankings are.”

Delta police are investigating after a string of small fires in Ladner over the weekend.

between Friday and Sunday.

The string of arsons started on Friday when the unknown assailant set fire to cardboard in a recycling dumpster at 47A Avenue and Laidlaw Street.

Delta firefighters extinguished the flames, which were confined to the dumpster.

The arsons continued on Saturday with a second one at 48th Avenue and Laidlaw where a dumpster and mat-

tress were ignited in a parking lot.

This time the police used a K9 team in an effort to track down the suspect, who proved elusive.

The fire was contained to the dumpster and the mattress.

Police also received a late report of another fire in the 4800-block of Elliott Street when the complainant arrived at work and noticed the recycling dumpster had

been on fire.

The $150 worth of damage was contained to the dumpster.

On Sunday, Delta police received two more late reports of fires in the 5200and 5000-blocks of 48th Avenue.

In both cases, dumpsters behind local businesses were set on fire overnight.

Another $350 in damage was reported from those two fires.

As far as the development plans, Baird noted the band still doesn’t have anything to announce just yet regarding a commercial component it has been working on in recent months. Negotiations are still taking place, she said The band has also been actively pursuing projects for its industrial land as well as trying to land some stimulus funding from the federal government.

Tsawwassen First Nation Chief Kim Baird recently gained some insights into big business through a unique exchange program.

Baird participated last month in an initiative called the Leadership Exchange Program, which paired corporate and aboriginal leaders. It was the first exchange of its kind in Canada.

Each CEO and chief spent six days paired with their partner in their respective environments. In that time, the chiefs visited the corporations to get an inside look at the values and culture of their businesses. In turn, the corporate leaders spent time in the chiefs’ communities, learning their values and culture.

Owen said the family has worked to streamline the process in order to give customers maximum options while keeping costs down.

Owen recognizes the company isn’t breaking new ground.

“It’s not that we don’t do

what others do,” he says.

“We just do it better.”

MURPHY’S LAW I crossed the Golden Ears Bridge last month for only the second time since the $800 million span opened about a year-and-a-half ago and I noticed the same thing as I did the first time around — there was hardly a vehicle to be seen.

Granted, the most recent crossing was on a Saturday morning, not exactly prime time, but the bridge was so eerily empty it felt like I had ventured onto a closed road.

It reinforced the notion that spending a huge sum of public money to improve the north-south flow between Langley and Ridge Meadows was a curious decision when the overwhelming traffic pattern in that part of the Lower Mainland is in an east-west direction to and from Vancouver.

I raise this gem of transportation planning because I can’t help but think of the traffic counts municipal hall conducted a few years back when I see the construction taking place in these parts for the South Fraser Perimeter Road.

The $1 billion highway from the ports at Roberts Bank to Highway 1 in Surrey is supposed to provide that much-needed east-west route south of the Fraser River, but I wonder exactly how busy it will actually be when it opens in 2013.

The counts found the vast majority of traffic heading northbound on Highway 17 continues through the George Massey Tunnel rather than east via River Road or Highway 10. Granted, the South Fraser Perimeter Road will be a far better option than either of the current, and antiquated, eastbound routes, but, as the Golden Ears Bridge proves, you can’t change the direction people travel, regardless of how nicely paved the new route might be you’re offering.

Volume through the tunnel isn’t supposed to decline once the new highway opens, which has to tell you something about how much of an impact it’s going to make on the traffic flow around here.

When I watch the traffic reports on Global each weekday morning, I still see long lines along Highway 1 as well as in the Lougheed Highway/Mary Hill Bypass area, a situation the Golden Ears Bridge has done little to rectify. At least the provincial government is working on a new Port Mann Bridge, so there is hope on the horizon for commuters out there.

As for those of us south of the river, it looks like the South Fraser Perimeter Road is all we’re going to get. The truckinspired route that will link us to the Trans-Canada Highway appears to be the sum of transportation improvements scheduled for this region.

In other words, there’s no light at the end of our tunnel.

Divisive duo to leave Liberal race with boring conclusion DAN SOUTHARD

COMMUNITY COMMENT Mike de Jong was in town recently to remind us he’s running for the leadership of the B.C. Liberal party. A wise move, given everyone in the province, with the exception of his family, had forgotten he’s in the race — a speck on the horizon, but in the race nonetheless.

I doubt de Jong has expectations of victory, and I’m sure the same applies to Moira Stilwell.

They’re in it for other reasons now, and can at least take solace in the knowledge neither of them is at the bottom of the pack. That space is firmly occupied by Ed Mayne, whose leadership campaign has been more widely ignored than the “Slower Traffic Keep To The Right” signs on Highway 17.

This leaves Liberal members with three legitimate contenders

to choose from: Kevin Falcon, the pit bull; Christy Clark, the crowd favourite; and George Abbott, the nice guy.

I refer to Clark as “the crowd favourite,” but her crowd is limited to the general public, as Liberal members tend to favour Falcon.

A dichotomy? Sure. Indicative of a disconnect between the Liberals and the populous? Well, yes and no, but a fair bit deeper in the “no” side, I reckon.

Like me, many B.C. Liberal party members recognize is that if a cradle-to-grave federal Liberal like Clark takes the helm, a substantial number of centre-right voters will jump ship and paddle over to whichever conservative-based party appears the most buoyant.

Inevitably, that will result in (gulp) an NDP government.

Regardless, I still wouldn’t support Clark’s leadership bid, and not just because her anime eyes kind of freak me out a bit. I simply don’t believe Clark is up to the job, and I also think she’s even further disconnected from the voters than the Liberal caucus.

Clark is a federal Liberal who supported the attempted Liberal/ NDP/Bloc “coup.” She’s a steadfast

supporter of the HST, and angrily rejects any suggestion there should be further investigation into the B.C. Rail deal. These are all incongruent with the views of most B.C. voters.

Furthermore, Clark’s stint as a host on CKNW included numerous occasions in which she expressed regret for decisions she made, and policies she supported, during her time in government. While it’s great when someone is big enough to admit when they’ve made a mistake, after a while the accumulation of those admissions begins to paint a picture of incompetence.

It’s also indicative of a person who makes decisions without much forethought, also evident in her now-defunct, and ill-conceived, campaign pledge to scrap the HST referendum.

If I were a Liberal party member, I think I’d let out a long sigh and cast my ballot for Abbott. Of the three frontrunners, he’s the least divisive, and I think the most likely to win a provincial election.

Granted, Abbott’s not what you’d call a shining beacon of hope. In fact, he’s somewhat boring, but maybe boring is exactly what we need right now.

No qualms about complaints over noisy trucks at night night a number of trucks come, unload and/or load, and go.

Many, if not all, of them wake me up and sometimes I don’t get back to sleep for a long time, if at all.

So I hope for the sake of residents near Trenant Park Square (e.g. residents of West Shore Laylum behind London Drugs) that nighttime deliveries are not undertaken there.

Now, to the people who have been writing about the trivial nature of such complaints when compared to the really big problems faced by people, especially

in other parts of the world, I’d like to say a couple of things: First, these things are not mutually exclusive: that is, one’s concern about getting much-needed sleep does not mean the same person doesn’t or can’t have concerns for people suffering, often with their lives at risk, all over the world, be it Haiti or elsewhere.

Second, putting up with our “small” problems and not trying to solve them does nothing to help other people with their big problems.

Editor: Re: TransLink acknowledges more services required, letter to the editor, Feb. 5 TransLink’s Ken Hardie might well believe the “importance of having an integrated system” and believe his conclusion that, “ours is envied around the world.”

I wonder, though, if his

comparison considered the integrated system that serves Sydney, Australia and environs in a smooth, integrated, bus, train, ferry system. During our visits, we have enjoyed the system, its inexpensive rates and its friendly and helpful staff.

For a senior, the daily rate is A$2.50, which is about equivalent to C$2.50.

For that small fare, seniors

can ride any portion of the vast system all day. I question if TransLink’s system is “envied around the world.”

Incidentally, the population of Sydney and its surrounding communities is 4,534,133 as of Feb. 5 and that of the Lower Mainland 2,524,113 as of 2007. As people are wont to say, “You do the math.”

Editor: Re: School should be forgiving of students’ past actions, letter to the editor, Jan. 29 Forgive me if I’m a bit suspicious of Angie Thomas’ ambiguous accusations of Hawthorne’s teachers and principal. She states: “It is apparent that to forgive and forget is not something understood in the school system.”

Hmmm, let’s analyze this for a second, because I’d bet there’s far more to this story than her broadside suggests.

When a school chooses to deny participation in a specific activity, it’s usually indicative of the severity of the student’s transgression.

Schools simply don’t persecute and punish children for months on end, as she suggests.

The issue here would seem to be one of student accountability, consequences and the right of the school to sensibly censure students who’ve crossed the line, without parental interference.

Public schools do not punish students. They try to educate, modify unacceptable behavior and teach consequences through an escalating protocol, the final stage being expulsion. On a daily basis, they use the “carrot approach,” not the stick. If the system can be criticized at all, it is in being overly tolerant and too lenient on abusive students. But when schools do finally take action, it’s usually warranted and far past due.

As the parent of a learning-disabled child who has been ridiculed, traumatized and stigmatized mercilessly by attention-seeking schoolyard bullies, I have found public school policy to be the polar opposite of what

within safety boundaries, how can a Grade 7 student be expected to? Particularly one who already has a history of not listening to his teachers?

One of the normal complaints I hear from teachers I know is there aren’t enough consequences available to the teachers and administrators of the school. If this boy is being held back from going away to Whistler with his peers, it has got to be because of many different occurrences of misbehavior, lack of respect for the rules and not listening to the teachers.

I am sure the school district is sad this letter was sent to your paper, but as a taxpayer, I think it has made a wise choice.

Thomas suggests. I’ve witnessed the so-called “zero tolerance” policies regarding theft, verbal, physical and even sexual intimidation or abuse fold like the proverbial house of cards when it comes to real consequences for perpetrators.

While I applaud Thomas’ concern for her child, her decision to escalate a private policy disagreement into a public forum is highly misplaced. She may be better advised to take a close second look at the actions of her child and consider that Hawthorne has more than likely exercised its responsibility to enforce codes of conduct that protect all students.

Life has self-regulating consequences, which can be serious and painful for those choosing not to respect societal convention.

That Hawthorne is exhibiting leadership in helping educate young minds is commendable.

When I go grocery shopping, I tend to gravitate toward items that are priced well, packaged well and positioned on a shelf well within my reach.

Then there are the other considerations.

“Hmm,” said my husband the other day, after I’d returned from a shop. “I see you’ve bought a new kind of laundry detergent.”

“Darn right,” I said. “It’s Tide. Tide with Acti-Lift.”

“With what?” he asked.

With Acti-Lift, I told him. I admitted that I wasn’t entirely clear what Acti-Lift was, but I was pretty sure Tide was the only detergent-maker that had stumbled upon the ingredient and inserted it into its products.

“It has something to do with lifting,” I said. “Lifting dirt, I’m thinking. And in

a pretty active way. Sounds brilliant. You certainly don’t want your detergent to take its sweet time when it’s doing the heavy lifting.”

This represented the first time I had picked up anything containing Acti-Lift.

It did not represent the first time I had picked up an item because of some magical characteristic.

Some months back, I found a new shampoo — not because it was on sale or because it smelled like cedar boughs or because it was easy on the eco-system — but because it promised to be Volumactive.

“Now, I am just wondering,” I said to the cashier, “if you’ve ever tried this Volumactive shampoo.”

The cashier looked up from her scanning and smiled.

“What’s that?” she asked.

“This Volumactive shampoo,” I repeated. “I am assuming it gives your hair more volume. And in a really active way.”

She had not used the shampoo with Volumactive, but I decided to give it a try.

After all, I thought, a shampoo that’s Volumactive certainly sounds more promising than one that contains, oh, Voluminactive.

Then there’s toothpaste.

“You got new toothpaste,” the ever-grocery-observant husband remarked a few weeks back.

“This one on sale?”

“No silly,” I said.

“This is Crest Pro-Health Toothpaste. I figured that, at our ages, we really ought to be paying more attention to our health.”

“And what,” asked the husband, “does a toothpaste have to do with health?

Isn’t it important just to brush?”

“I have no idea what ProHealth is,” I said, exasperated. “But it’s not called NoHealth toothpaste, is it? Or worse, Anti-Health toothpaste? Don’t you WANT Pro-Health toothpaste?”

He shrugged. He wasn’t sure.

The husband, let’s say, is not as shopping savvy as yours truly. Granted, he tends to check out the price.

But I always read the labels.

The official opening of a major expansion to the fitness area at the Sungod Recreation Centre in North Delta will take place this Saturday.

Official ceremonies to mark the occasion will take place at 1 p.m. led by Mayor Lois Jackson. Nina Grewal, MP for FleetwoodPort Kells, will also be in attendance.

Drop-in admissions will be free that day and there will be prizes, sample classes, program demonstrations and refreshments between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. The facility will also be open for a free youth event for 13- to 18-year-olds between 9 and 10:30 p.m.

The Sungod expansion budget was $3 million, of which $2 million came from Delta and $1 million from Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The singlestorey addition at the front of the current weight room opened last month, increasing the floor space by about 3,500 square feet and adding more cardio and weight equipment.

Facility capacity has increased by approximately 100 people per hour.

Wild about the water

Marcia Strang and husband Gavin have been married for 12 years, and although she loves swimming and being in the water, and Gavin loves being on the water in any kind of boat, she couldn’t get Gavin interested in swimming. After much convincing and cajoling, Gavin agreed to go to Maui, where he bravely went snorkeling with Marcia — and loved it. They saw hundreds of fish, sea turtles and spent most of the time holding hands. Now they own their own snorkeling gear.

Fred and Diane Staton celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on an Alaskan cruise last summer. It was a lovely time, a great holiday and the beginning of the sixth decade of a wonderful marriage.

A pair of Ladner air cadets competed at the biathlon provincials at Mount Washington last weekend.

Shelby Raeburn finished third in the junior female category while Christopher Gaio came in seventh in the junior male category.

Both 14-year-olds are members of the 828 Hurricane Squadron.

This is Gaio’s first year competing, said volunteer biathlon coach Jeannette Neutce.

“He’s done really well,” she said, noting he had a second place finish in a zone competition last month.

Beverly: I love the new Weight Room; there’s so much room, it’s brighter, the new equipment is great and the staff is always helpful. Randy: I love the new, ultra modern weight room. Jacqueline: I like the new strength machines, no more cardio sign-up and the new treadmills with TVs. How does it benefit your life? Beverly: I feel better and sleep better. residents during March and April.

Many people do not know they need to file a tax return in order to receive the GST/HST credit or the Canada Child Tax Benefit.

Filing a tax return on time is important when receiving other benefits such as the Guaranteed Income

Supplement for seniors, MSP Premium Assistance and Pharmacare.

Speedy Thunder roll past Pacers Senior girls hoop team likely to finish third BY

It was billed as a key late season league game and ended up being more like a night school session for the Delta Pacers senior girls basketball team.

With a 6-2 record, the young squad was hoping to gain ground in the Fraser Valley West League when the undefeated Panorama Ridge Thunder (7-0) visited Ladner last Thursday. Instead, the Pacers will have to settle for third place when the league playoffs get underway later this week.

Their Surrey opponent used its athleticism to cause havoc much of the night and cruise to an easy 59-35 victory. With a backcourt that was missing two guards from the rotation, the Thunder took advantage with full court pressure that not only caused turnovers but had the Pacers out of synch on most possessions.

“Those girls were running as fast as they can,” marveled Delta coach Kerrie Trotman. “I haven’t seen girls coming like that at us this season, even the (higher) ranked teams. They are doing it all the time and they are quick.

“They were moving the ball faster than we could keep up. We are not quick and missing two of our guards made it an even greater challenge. It hurts with our (lack of) subs, quickness and ball handling. We panicked too.”

The Thunder represent just how different the landscape is at the senior level of high school basketball, particularly in the extremely competitive Fraser Valley zone.

Under Trotman, the Pacers were one of the best in the Valley at the younger Grade levels, highlighted by a second place finish and a top 10 provincial ranking in junior last season.

When this season began, the Thunder were not on the Pacers’ radar screen as they never were a factor in junior. Everything pointed to perennial powerhouse Elgin Park as being their biggest rival.

The Thunder handed Delta a 48-29 loss back in early January, then made their first-ever appearance in the provincial rankings with a 66-58 win over Elgin two weeks later. Their second victory over the Pacers puts them in the driver’s seat for a first place finish, while the locals are now looking for answers to close the gap between themselves and the league’s top two teams.

“I don’t know where (Panorama Ridge players) came from but they have sure done a good job,” added Trotman. “You can’t teach quickness and they have a lot of it.”

The Pacers conclude league play with games against Seaquam and Elgin Park before likely hosting South Delta, North Delta or Semiahmoo on Thursday to open the league playoffs.

It’s going to be a short stay in the junior ranks for Delta Pacers basketball coach Robin Wait.

After guiding the senior team to its first provincial tournament berth in 17 years last season, Wait stepped down to take on a junior squad that has plenty of potential.

The Junior Pacers have lived up to their billing, looking to cap an unbeaten run in district league play this week and being

competitive with a number of ranked teams in the province.

“We’re not at that level yet but we are getting closer,” said Wait of earning a provincial ranking. “It’s very important that these kids see some of the top teams in the province and we’re hoping to make a deep run in the Fraser Valley playoffs.”

Wait’s 15-man roster includes five Grade 9s who led Delta to a second place finish at last year’s Grade 8 Valley Championships. Three of them — Ryan Cowley, Clint Taylor and Andrew Jones

— are starters, joining Evan Messenger and Will Schwan in the first unit.

Another Grade 9 player — Gursharn Bajwa — was the team’s leading scoring before leaving for India in December. He is now back for the post-season.

At 6-foot-5, Cowley is already a force in the paint and plays basketball year-round as part of the DRIVE academy program in Richmond. He will be making the jump to the senior level next season and more of the Grade 9s are expected to follow.

“It’s different for me having a true post

option and running the offence through the post,” added Wait who has had to rely on more of a run-and-gun style with his past senior teams to overcome a lack of size.

“Will (6-foot-4) also gives us size inside and Andrew is a very polish point guard for his age.”

The hope is the young talent will put the Pacers back into contention in the Fraser Valley Southwest League next season, led by third-year guard Lucas Goosen who played key minutes last season as a Grade 10.

Selective application methods include: cut and paint or inject, backpack or ATV foliar spraying, wick-on, basal bark, squirt bottle and stem injection.

The little swim club from Tsawwassen showed it has big resolutions for 2011 at the Canadian Dolphin Swim Club New Year’s Invitational Meet.

Winskill Dolphins swimmers started the new year strong by breaking nine meet records and taking numerous top finishes.

Fresh from being selected to Team B.C., Vito Zou (14) led the charge by winning the 800m, 400m, and 50m freestyle events, setting new meet records in each one — 8:42, 4:09, and 26.23 seconds respectively. He also grabbed first place in 100m back with a four second best time. Jonathan Kraft (16) won the 800m and 400m free, setting a new meet record in the latter (4:08).

Gabe Lee (14) captured the 100m fly in new meet record (1:03) and also finished first in 200m free and 200m fly.

Sarah Yeo (13) won the 400m IM, as well as the 200m (2:29) and 100m (1:07) back, in meet record times. Aleckxeis Aficionado (12) captured the 200 IM, 50m fly, and 50m Back, setting a new meet record of 32.21 seconds in that event.

She fought a brave battle for 42 years with diabetes filled with many difficult challenges in the last eight years. Noelle was very sports minded and had a lifelong quest for travel and adventure. She experienced more than most could dream of.

Noelle leaves behind her parents Louis and Trudi Laurence of Tsawwassen, sisters Michelle (Ken) Wilson of Ladner and Melanie Laurence (Barry) of Burnaby. She will be sadly missed by her family, many close friends, health care providers and acquaintances worldwide. Noelle met life’s challenges with determination, dignity and a great sense of humour. She was a true inspiration for her family, friends and all who knew her. In lieu of flowers donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Delta Humane Society or Canadian Kidney Foundation will be greatly appreciated. No Service by request. Bob was born in Toronto, Ontario, second son of Lillian (MacBeth) and Gordon MacLaren, and younger brother to Bill. Bob attended public school in Toronto, and as a teenager was active in sports, excelling in high school football. He moved to Vancouver in 1948 with Lillian and stepfather Ewart Harman who had relocated to B.C. to start his own construction company. Bob worked briefly for his stepfather, then continued in the road construction industry, employed for many years with Standard General Construction. He met the love of his life, Diane Saunders (1932-2008) when Lillian was a patient at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver and as fate would have it, Diane was Lillian’s nurse. Bob and Diane were married on December 4, 1954 and spent the first five years of their marriage living in many small towns in B.C. while Bob worked road construction and Diane nursed. Daughter Suzanne was born in 1959 followed by son Dan in 1962. The family moved to Bayview Drive in Tsawwassen in 1965, and Bob started his own road construction company, Premier Paving and Construction, which he operated until his retirement.

Bob and Diane were members of the Tsawwassen Bowling League for several years, and Bob was involved in the Boundary Bay Lion’s Club, becoming President.

Golf was Bob’s passion and he became a member of the Beach Grove Golf Club, and served as President in 1989/90. Bob is survived by brother Bill MacLaren of Toronto, son Dan of Tsawwassen (Michael and Katie), daughter Suzanne of Calgary (Anna and Rhys), sister-in-law Joan Allester of Chemainus, and many nieces, nephews, extended family and close friends. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 12th, 2011 at 11:30am at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Delta, B.C. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to the Alzheimer Society of B.C., or to the Delta Hospice Society.
