Police in favour of truck trains

Officers tell Delta council members they support pilot project that will see two-trailer vehicles travel local roads JESSICA KERR

While Delta has received some push back on a pilot project that would see longer trucks travel between Deltaport and Tilbury, members of the Delta police department have come out in support of the idea. In August, civic politicians endorsed a pilot project with Maersk Distribution that would

see the company operate extended length trucks between its River Road facility and the container port at Roberts Bank. The trucks, which are known as truck trains, are combination vehicles consisting of a tractor and two trailers that measure approximately 35 metres in length. Special Const. Sean Kelly, who works in the vehicle inspection unit, voiced support for the proposed project during a recent pre-

sentation to Delta council. “We support this. We support the number of trucks being reduced,” Kelly said. “We’ve had numerous dealings with Maersk and they certainly have a very well run company that has a satisfactory safety record. From my point of view, this is a very good thing.” Const. John Merrymen,

who works in the Delta police collision investigation unit, said he had a chance to look at Maersk’s proposal and while initially there were concerns about how the system would work with the existing infrastructure, the proposed changes at the intersection of River Road and River Way addressed that. “I believe Maersk has answered See TRUCKS page 3

Flying proves to be real workout Tilbury operation allows people to experience the feeling of flight — and get some exercise in the process BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Fly Zone Bodyflight president Peter Zaoralek says bodyflying provides a good workout and I wouldn’t disagree with him. It didn’t take long after stepping out of the vertical wind tunnel to notice my arms and legs to feel like they’d been through some decent exercise. “Anybody can get in there and learn to fly their body. It’s a great physical activity,” he said at a media launch last week at Fly Zone’s new Tilbury location. “It’s a lot of fun and you’ll feel it tomorrow, it’s like a full cardio workout.” Bodyflying is described as the art of flying your body in a controlled manner. It’s important to keep your body relaxed and your shoulders and hips square, visiting instructor Jeremy Peters said during a brief training session. In the wind tunnel, a transparent wall-to-wall acrylic tube with a 10-foot diameter fan to keep flyers suspended off the ground, it was tougher than I thought it would be to stay relaxed and keep steady.

Fly Zone president Peter Zaoralek says bodyflying is not only a lot of fun, but it’s also a full cardio workout. Instructors, who were in the wind tunnel along with assorted media members, communicated with hand signals because of the noisy fan. I tried to follow the

signals as best as I could remember, which wasn’t too well, and was just happy to not embarrass myself by crashing. Peters, who works for

a Texas-based company called SkyVenture, made it look very easy during a quick demonstration, even doing some acrobatic looking tricks.

Victoria’s Zaoralek said he first encountered bodyflying in 1997 in Europe and has been involved in it from a business point of view for over 12 years.

He said Fly Zone’s vertical wind tunnel, which is portable, is the “first and only one like this in Canada.” “It’s a custom designed chassis we can transport anywhere. It’s got custom gearboxes and specialty components.” The fan is said to be able to generate wind speeds of up to 220 km/h. Zaoralek said he chose Tilbury as Fly Zone’s location because it’s close to his manufacturing suppliers. “We’re looking at manufacturing these for international sale. A lot of my suppliers are in the Tilbury area and Richmond.” Fly Zone offers beginner packages, which include training, gear and two flight sessions, at $62.50 for adults and $52.50 for kids from five to 12. Deluxe packages, which include training, gear and four minutes of bodyflight, are $99 for adults and $89 for kids from five to 12. Thanks in part to a deal offered on Groupon, a daily deal website, Fly Zone is booked up for approximately the next three months, Zaoralek said. Visit www.flyzone.ca for more information.

Locals to get opportunity to vote for party leaders BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Delta South Liberals and New Democrats are getting ready to help choose new leaders for their respective parties. The NDP announced this week it has picked April 17 for its leadership vote to replace Carole James, while the Liberals had previously set Feb. 26 as the date to choose a successor for Premier Gordon Campbell. For both parties, the winner will be chosen depending on how many party

members vote for them, rather than a delegate system. Those wanting to vote for the Liberal leader have until Feb. 4 to sign up as a member, while prospective New Democrats have until Jan. 17 to join the party. Noting each member who votes will have an impact on who will become the next premier, Delta South Liberal riding association president Kristy Wawryk said the association is “enthusiastic and energized.” It’s a very exciting time

TRUCKS from page 1 those questions for us,” Merrymen said. Maersk is still in the process of obtaining all the permits — a highway use permit, a highway use licence and a provincial permit — before the sixmonth trial can begin. As well, some road improvements, which have not yet been completed, are required before the trucks

will be allowed to travel that route. Brian Hetherington, general manager of transportation and logistics with Maersk, told council that all the equipment that will be used in the project is new and state of the art. All the trucks are 2008 models or newer and all trucks and chassis are on a nine-day maintenance

to be a B.C. Liberal, she said, encouraging Ladner and Tsawwassen residents to sign up to be a member at www.bcliberals.com. The last time the party had a big swell in membership locally was in 1999 when Val Roddick won a by-election after a heated nomination race. The Liberal provincial executive last week unanimously endorsed the use of online and phone voting for members to cast ballots. Meanwhile, the NDP is also going high-tech in its search for a new leader.

Delta South riding association president Jim Morrison said regional centres would be established where members can vote, but they can also vote online. “There’s no convention delegates like the old days where you had a certain number of delegates selected per constituency based on the number of members and that sort of thing. Now it’s all one-member, onevote, no matter where you are,” explained Morrison Noting the riding association currently has about

75 members, Morrison said a gathering would be scheduled in Delta South for them as well as lapsed and prospective members. They can also sign up at www. bcndp.ca. Morrison said it’s an exciting time and a great opportunity for South Deltans to participate. While a handful of Liberals have already declared their candidacy for the party leadership, so far nobody has declared for the NDP. Morrison said there have been some rumours of not

only current New Democrat MLAs running, but also highly respected members of the public entering the race. As for the next provincial election in Delta South, whoever eventually gets the nod to run for the NDP and Liberals will be up against incumbent Vicki Huntington, who became the first independent in over 50 years to win a seat in the legislature in 2009. Huntington took advantage of voter dissatisfaction with the Liberal government to beat Wally Oppal.

schedule. “We have a very, very high standard for recruitment of drivers... we continually strive to exceed industry standards with respect to driver skill and ability and training,” he said, stressing that safety is a top priority for the company. If the project goes ahead, the truck trains will operate only during non-peak hours and will stick to a fixed route between Deltaport and the company’s Tilbury

location. As well, the trucks will have some restrictions around operation during inclement weather. “Safety being our primary focus, we’re not going to put anybody at risk, drivers and the general public,” Hetherington said. He told council using the longer trucks will mean fewer total trucks on the road, which will also have environmental benefits. Since Delta endorsed the plan, there has been some

opposition in the community to the longer trucks, including both MLAs speaking out against it. “It raises a whole lot of questions,” said Delta North MLA Guy Gentner. “The Liberals are fundamentally changing road transportation with the introduction of truck trains between the coast and the interior. I think this is just the beginning of the horror show on B.C. roads.” He has asked the practice

of permitting long combination vehicles be stopped until the provincial government addresses safety concerns and sustainable transportation alternatives. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington also said she has concerns about having these types of trucks on the roads. “I don’t like the concept of truck trains in urbanized areas,” she said. “I’m very concerned about the safety aspect.”

Comfortable ‘Landing’ spot for locals

Ladners Landing Facebook page growing in popularity as fans use online community to share information BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

What started as one person’s efforts to share local news and promote business has turned into an online community for many current and former Ladner residents. The Ladners Landing Facebook page has come a long way in a little over a year. With more than 1,000 fans and counting, the community buzz site offers everything from news, events and happenings to debate about local issues, photos, contests, business recommendations and the odd recipe. It started out about 15 months ago as a Twitter account. “We started engaging with local residents and re-tweeting news and local business offers,” said one of the site’s creators in an e-mail interview. “It really started trying to promote our great little town and businesses and local recipes, etc. and then it grew.” The Ladners Landing crew has decided to remain

anonymous. “This page is not about us at all,” they said. “Yes, we created it but it is not us that makes this page. We facilitate it and moderate it but it is out followers that make it what it is and the huge success it has become.” Facebook users who join the Ladners Landing page have the ability to post comments, photos and links, making it the go to place for many of them. When Ladnerite Don Flucker found an old photograph in the water by his Port Guichon float home last month, he posted it on the Ladners Landing page in an effort to try and track down the owner. Some local business owners use the page to get the word out about products and promotions as well as offering Ladners Landing contest prizes — massages, pedicures and lots of gift cards for local stores — which the page gives away through contests and draws. “Anything that can be sent out by e-mail or in the mail, we can give away. Delta riding new wave at John Oliver After deal with Whitecaps falls through, municipality embarks on planning process for East Delta park SANDOR GYARMATI

A new plan is being put together to expand John Oliver Park in East Delta. Earlier this year it was announced a proposed partnership between Delta and the Vancouver Whitecaps to further develop the site was dead and the municipality would embark on its own master plan for the approximately 20-hectare (50-acre) park. CAO George Harvie said Delta has $5 million in reserves to spend on the municipal project. The municipality acquired four smaller parcels adjacent to the existing park at the junction of highways 10 and 91 to increase the site’s footprint and allow for greater sports field development. Parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz told the Optimist a subcommittee of the parks and recreation commission began working on a new plan this summer, but that work was temporarily put on hold until an agreement with the Ex-Britannia/Red Lions Athletic Association could be terminated. Eight years ago, Delta signed an agreement with the rugby association for the club to invest $2 million in the park. The club eventually built a pair of rugby fields. The club was also to renovate the dilapidated John Oliver barn on the site, turning it into a facility with community meeting rooms and locker space. However, the club didn’t have enough money to upgrade the structure when it was determined that part of the project would cost much more than anticipated. The barn was eventually dismantled. “It’s unfortunate that sometimes we have to go through those exercises to find out to re-use and readapt that barn was so cost prohibitive that it became out of reach for any logical organization watching their money,” said Kuntz. “We put it (new master plan) on hold so that we could come up with an exit strategy for the Ex-Brits and they could close the books on their plans that were too aggressive for them to achieve. We’ve been able to nicely do that so that the Brit-Lions will still be there at the park and have use of the fields that they helped build,” he said. The subcommittee will

now resume work on the master plan, which will then wind its way to the commission and the parks department. Kuntz said a plan would likely be pre-

sented to Delta council in early 2011. “There’s no doubt the subcommittee feels there’s further opportunity for sports field and sports

development at the park,” said Kuntz. As far as constructing buildings for community uses, Kuntz said the master plan would likely include

some kind of field house. The Whitecaps had pitched a $31 million plan that included a clubhouse, a training facility and seven new fields, five for the

exclusive use of the soccer club. The plan collapsed after community access turned out to be an issue that couldn’t be overcome.

Border patrol

Delta police were called to the Point Roberts border crossing Friday to help find a man who crossed the border on a bike. The Canadian Border Services Agency received a request from the American Border Patrol to conduct patrols around the 5000-block of Wallace Avenue. The request was passed along to Delta police. The American authorities reported that a man with a moustache, wearing dark clothes and a hat, rode a bicycle with two bags attached to the handlebars across the border from the American side. Officers searched the area but could not locate the man.

Lack of growth causes concern

Chamber of commerce board worried what future holds for business and community BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

Business leaders are discussing what the future might hold with Delta’s continued lack of growth. Following the recent abandonment of the Tsawwassen Area Plan, the issue of growth has once again become paramount for the Delta Chamber of Commerce. “Our board has been discussing this and, in fact, we’re quite concerned as of late. The most recent example is the Tsawwassen town centre plan and we’re concerned about the negative impact not only in the business community but the

community in general about the lack of growth and what that means,” said executive director Peter Roaf. The chamber board is continuing its examination and over the next few weeks might come up with a report or perhaps request a presentation to Delta council. With Delta’s population stagnate and its demographic aging, coupled with looming commercial competition from the Tsawwassen First Nation (which happens to be a member of the chamber), local business faces lots of uncertainty, noted Roaf, adding some development such as the Tsawwassen FILE PHOTO

prepared an “Ideas” document that outlined a series of concerns identified during public consultation meetings. According to the document, those concerns included merchants finding it difficult to thrive given the lack of population growth and the aging demographic. It’s certainly not the first time the issue of growth has been raised by Tsawwassen businesses. In 1990, for example, the Tsawwassen Homeowners’ Association met with the Tsawwassen Business Association to see where the business group stood following a television news story that depicted Tsawwassen as a dying business community. THA spokesperson Wendy Jeske was quoted in the report as saying Tsawwassen’s many vacant businesses were victims of “poor business decisions and poor management practices.” Noting a no-growth policy had stagnated the town core, however, Century Holdings vicepresident Peter Mould said Tsawwassen was perceived as a no-growth community, both provincially and nationally. The area plan was eventually updated a couple of years later. The community, though, hasn’t come close to that plan’s projected population growth. Despite abandoning the current area plan bylaw this fall, municipal staff continues with the planning process for Tsawwassen and a new document is expected to be made public early in 2011.

Keri Laughlin was in Mexico on a six-month internship with a municipal planning institute.

Parts of her duties included helping work on a sustainable development plan for the city and looking at how to engage youth in local initiatives. “It became really difficult for me to do my job. I was supposed to go out and look for youth and how [they] were engaged in sustainable activities.” Laughlin said. “That was the most difficult part because I was putting myself at risk.” She said young people were hard to find in Chihuahua unless she went to a shopping mall. “I found out the shopping mall is where everyone goes because there’s a lot of people and there’s a lot of security guards. That’s their social landscape there. They don’t utilize their public spaces like parks or anything like that.” Her internship went from February to August but Laughlin didn’t spend the entire time in Chihuahua. Tsawwassen’s Keri Laughlin, 31, saw some of the effects of drug-related violence in Mexico during her six-month internship there earlier this year. “Within three months, a grenade was thrown through our neighbour’s window, I came across dead bodies, there were gunshots every night. It was increasing violence, it just got worse,” she said in an interview with the Optimist. Laughlin went to Chihuahua, the capital city of a state with the same name in the north of Mexico for an internship with a municipal planning institute. Laughlin went there after talking to other interns already in the city, located about five hours south of Puerto Vallarta, who said it wasn’t dangerous. She said her experience was completely different in Colima and that it was much safer.

“The level of safety there, it’s like a different country.” Laughlin said one of her lasting impressions from her time in Mexico is that locals are “trying hard to make improvements to their communities and cities in a sustainable way” but that politics and violence sur-

Things are going well for new My Party Rentals owners Jonn Epplette and Becky Watson. “We are thoroughly enjoying our new business and partnership. On top of that is has been wonderful to meet the customers and provide such a fun service to them,” they said. Since taking over the party rental store earlier this year the business partners have made several changes, including moving to a new location in Tsawwassen. “Although the square footage is the same as the prior building, we have set the store up differently, creating space for customers to really see all that we have to offer. This spot has great features such as parking at the rear of the shop where we take in returns and send out orders.” Epplette and Watson, who are longtime Tsawwassen residents, have also added items to the store’s inventory.

Examples include chocolate fountains, a candyfloss machine, a margarita/slush blender, a tabletop popcorn machine, a hotdog steamer machine, a large parquet dance floor, high chairs, booster seats and portable playpen/cribs. They’ve expanded their helium balloon inventory and created a workstation to put together balloon orders and have created new birthday party and dinner packages to allow for simple, one stop shopping. Future plans include

expanding the store’s inventory of chairs, tables, tents and adding chair covers to outfit weddings and events. Epplette and Watson say they’ve been getting encouragement and support from many people and businesses in the community since taking over the store. “We got into this business together as family friends looking for a new, fun and exciting challenge.” My Party Rentals is located at 5575-16th Ave. and on the web at www. mypartyrentals.ca. TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW It’s just human nature, I suppose. Earlier this year when Delta removed the heron-adorned Welcome to Ladner sign, replacing it with a decidedly blander version, folks in these parts were none too pleased. The quaint sign that helped express the community’s character disappeared in favour of a sterile replacement that was so non-descript it could have been installed at the entrance to just about anywhere. Normally laid back Ladnerites quickly sprung into action, putting their fingers to keyboards to express their opposition to the “improvements” municipal hall had undertaken. To its credit, Delta listened and a rather large heron has subsequently been added, giving the sign back its Ladner feel. I revisit this issue because since the heron was added we’ve received all of two letters complimenting the municipality for its efforts. One arrived late last month from Tom Jarecki, which got me thinking about the quiet acceptance the community has displayed toward the winged addition. And just as I was writing this column about that underwhelming response, a second letter, this one from John Ketteringham, arrived on Monday morning. That’s in stark contrast to a few months earlier when we received dozens of letters, e-mails and phone calls of complaint over the removal of the old sign and the installation of the new one. As a personal mea culpa, I must say I’m as guilty in this regard as the next guy. I had previously been critical of Delta’s decision to enlist Stephen Harper’s personal stylist to devise the new signs (OK, so they didn’t use him, but you get my point), yet had written nary a word about the subsequent improvements. So let me just say, I’m glad to see a heron returned to the sign to give Ladner its groove back. I guess it’s only human nature to complain when something doesn’t go as you’d like, but to stay silent when all is well. We do it in all facets of our lives, so it’s not surprising in the least to see the manifestation of such behaviour in the newspaper as well. If there’s one complaint I hear more than any other it’s the one about the constant negativity, particularly when it comes to letters to the editor. The query is phrased a little differently each time, but the gist of it remains the same: Why do you give the complainers a soapbox? I tell them we give everyone the opportunity to have their say on the letters pages, but it’s usually only those with a beef who are sufficiently moved to write.

Belief comes naturally to kids not constrained by cynicism SYLVIA BISHOP

COMMUNITY COMMENT Believe. A child does. In the early afternoon of Dec. 24, two working parents arrive home to prepare for Christmas Eve. In a nod to their own traditions, the Christmas tree does not go up until this day. Except for an advent wreath, there are few decorations around the house. For the young child, there is heightened anticipation. Both doors leading to the dining and living rooms are closed. It’s explained the dad is setting up the tree and decorating it with the help of the Christkindl and attending angels. They cannot be disturbed! And no matter how much the child attempts to squint through the cracks in the door jam, only a sense of flickering lights can be seen. It is magically quiet in there. In the meantime, the mother prepares a simple meal. It is the array of homemade baking, nuts

and mandarin oranges, which will round out dinner, enjoyed while presents are opened. As Christmas Eve is central to the celebration of the season, everyone dresses accordingly. This is an occasion and best clothes are in order! Finally, the mom calls. Things seem to be ready. And when the familiar Christmas record begins with its choir of angels, the child leads her parents through the kitchen door to behold a wondrous sight. A brightly lit and decorated tree transforms the living room. Beneath it, an array of wrapped presents. But this particular Christmas, a wish has been fulfilled and standing brightly in front of the tree is the long awaited new bike. Walking toward it, the child suddenly stops. There is a distraction. Looking through the glass door toward the foyer, the child sees the evening’s visitor. Dressed in magnificent deep red velvet clothes, trimmed with white fur, stands a portly, elderly gentleman. His cheeks are the kind of pink you get from being outside. On his nose, a pair of wire rimmed glasses. And he has a big smile on his face.

The Optimist encourages readers to write letters to the editor. Letters are accepted on any topic, although preference is given to those on local matters. The Optimist reserves the right to edit letters and the decision to publish is at the discretion of the editor or publisher. All letters must be signed, dated and include the writer’s phone number

He appears familiar, but resembles no one the child knows. She holds his gaze for several moments, taking in the importance of his visit. Turning to let her parents know who is standing there, he is already gone when she turns again. The evening proceeds in the warmth of family life, marked only by the child’s disappointment the visitor left before her parents saw him. They chuckle indulgently in the way adults, grown cynical, will do when confronted by things children understand so perfectly and adults no longer do. Days later, while walking through the neighbourhood with her best friend, she shares her experience, expecting her friend to scoff at her. Instead, her friend stops and turns. She too has something to share. On that same Christmas Eve, while walking home, she saw a passenger sleigh led by reindeer land on the rooftop of her friend’s house. It was silhouetted against the evening sky. She had not dared tell anyone, for who would believe such a thing? Comforted by their shared and special knowledge, the girls headed home. Believe. Children and the young at heart do.

Put more value on heritage

important part of Delta’s heritage. Preserving historic buildings makes sense economically, as the popularity of international heritage tourism clearly demonstrates. Additionally, preservation satisfies an emotional need and validates memories. Historic buildings give us a sense of place, contribute to the enjoyment of life and are of great value to society. One only has to look at the great success of heritage communities like Fort Langley or Steveston to see what great things can be accomplished when a community, including politicians, gets fully behind their community’s heritage. B. Yaworski D. Reynolds

Delta thanked for improving welcome sign

Editor: Some months ago when the heron sign on Ladner Trunk Road was removed and replaced by a generic (boring) sign, there were many letters written to the editor complaining about the new sign — what was Delta council thinking; who made this dumb decision, etc.

To their credit, someone from the municipality who was involved in the decision making wrote a letter to the Optimist explaining why the change was made, and admitting they didn’t expect the hugely negative reaction to the move. Now that the situation has been rectified by the addition of a heron to the

new sign, which is actually an improvement on the old set-up (almost creates a bit of a 3-D effect), I would like to say thank you to the decision makers, who not only listened to citizens’ complaints, but reacted in a totally positive way to resolve the situation. Ladnerites thank you. John Ketteringham

building remnants were not being taken seriously. We did take a closer look at the site and clean up and, in fact, did see some large beams, pieces of wood and equipment that could and should be saved. Hopefully it is not too late to save some remnants, although the quick clean up operation has not been lost on the writers of this letter. It was possibly too quick before a closer examination of potentially precious, reusable historic materials. It is our hope it is not too late to revise how council looks at the community’s historic buildings as less of a “salvage operation and safety liability concern” and more of a “proactive” recognition of them as an

12220328

Editor: As Ladner residents who regularly walk by the Seven Seas heritage site, we are very distressed to see the collapse of a building on that site and witness the loss of a valuable publiclyfunded investment decay and disappear. We are also concerned that Delta council and municipal staff may not be fully appreciating the heritage value of the buildings on that site — and possibly in our community. The main council discussion about the site on Dec. 13 seemed to be mainly about a “salvage operation and safety concerns.” For example: It appeared Coun. Heather King’s suggestions about saving some of the

Editor: Re: Aircraft noise levels unacceptable, letter to the editor, Dec. 15 Once again, residents of our town have complained to your newspaper about excessive aircraft noise levels and once again I shake my head. This subject first arose in the summer of 2007. I was taking a break from my Saturday afternoon gardening to have a cuppa and read the Optimist when I came across a letter about heavy aircraft flying constantly over the town. I was still working at the time so

every day. I have followed this issue for several years and then stopped following it when it was stated the flight path would be going up the centre of Boundary Bay instead of crossing over land. Well, to this very day, it’s not happening. I live one street off the beach, which puts me on the extreme east side of South Delta and supposedly on the west side of air traffic. I can say very honestly that I hear and see planes crossing over South Delta, west of my house, which is nowhere near the centre of the bay.

On numerous occasions while sitting outside, you have to stop talking because the planes are so low it affects normal conversation. I would liken it to being on the flight path of a runway because I have lived on one, so I would know. The small aircraft that fly out of Boundary Bay Airport show more concern over flight paths and noise than YVR, as most of their flights are over the bay, away from people. In my lifetime I have learned that people don’t tend to complain unless there is an issue, and there

is one here. And for YVR and it’s people to blow us off as if we don’t know what we are talking about just shows the lack of concern on this matter, as if they don’t seem to care even, though they say they do. To the people who control things at YVR, here’s a simple solution: reroute all plane traffic down the centre of the bay and that will stop the complaints. To the people of South Delta: keep complaining and carry a big stick. Sooner or later they are going to finally hear us. Rod Maksym

did not have time at home during the week and could not therefore verify or deny the claims. As I read the letter, the hum of an aircraft did come into my consciousness, so I timed its journey through my auditory range; it took precisely 37 seconds before I could no longer hear it and the loudest part took approximately 10 seconds. That afternoon, I spent three hours in my garden: for the entire three hours, there were neighbours mowing lawns using noisy gas-powered mowers, two people in the area were

pressure washing, one roof was being replaced with the constant hammering associated with that process, one neighbour was using a table saw outside constantly, another was tinkering with his car while playing his radio for the whole neighbourhood and children were screaming constantly. Now that is noise pollution. Now I am retired, and have been for three years. I still do not hear the “roar of jet engines every hour of every day.” I am a very light sleeper and have never been awoken by an aircraft; when I have been awake,

the small Dash 8 that comes through around 5:30 a.m. is barely loud enough to register before it is gone. Heavy jets cannot fly low over Tsawwassen, despite what your readers say, simply because we have Boundary Bay Airport in the region. The presence of those small planes, in fact, “protects” us from low-flying scheduled jet traffic. Perhaps the complainants should consider isolating themselves from society altogether, so they can find the absolute silence they seem to desire. Jacqui MacGillivray

Editor: Re: Complaints as noisy as planes, Dec. 18 In regards to Coun. Robert Campbell’s statement, that the noise complaints are unfounded, I strongly disagree. I am a longtime Boundary Bay resident and have listened to air traffic for over 24 years so I can honestly state what is going on regarding to the noise people are talking about. Due to health I am a stay at home person, so I hear every plane every day, very different than the lucky people who go to work

Bay resident says planes not over water when flying through Delta

Editor: Re: TFN housing likely in line with Metro plan, letter to the editor, Dec. 8 Thank you to Doug Raines, CAO of the Tsawwassen First Nation, for his excellent letter clarifying the planning process of TFN residential, community and economic opportunities within the frame-

work of Metro Vancouver Regional Growth Strategy. With the historic achievement of the Tsawwassen First Nation treaty, TFN became the first First Nation to join Metro Vancouver. It is so good to hear Raines acknowledge the inclusion of “... our natural environment and the greater

Africa. A petition was sent to Ottawa, which resulted in a private member’s bill. After a lengthy break for the Olympics and summer recess, the bill is back. However, there are still a few obstacles standing in the grandmothers’ way, said South Fraser Gogo Ruth Worthington. In an effort to drum up support for the bill, the South Fraser Gogos and their counterparts are sending cards to MPs. For more information, call Jesse Pringle at 604-946-1012.

The South Fraser Gogos and their counterparts across Canada are continuing to lobby the federal government to make it easier for HIV and AIDS prescription drugs to get to those who need them in Africa. The South Fraser Gogos are one of more than 200 grandmother groups across Canada that have been formed to support the work of the Stephen Lewis Foundation and his Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. The campaign is aimed at helping the growing number of grandmothers in Africa who are now raising grandchildren orphaned by AIDS. For more than a year,

the groups have been pushing the federal government to change legislation that allows the manufacture and exportation of low-cost generic drugs to developing nations. The legislation was passed with much fanfare back in 2004, but since then only one shipment has gone to Africa where there are more than 10 million people who would benefit from receiving the drugs. Jesse Pringle, who started the South Fraser Gogos in November 2006, said it looks good on the surface but underneath there is too much red tape. Gogo groups from across the country started a campaign to get the legislation amended to make it easier for drug companies to ship anti-retroviral drugs to

Delta employees raise in excess of $52,000 for the United Way in ’10

South Delta Secondary students performed last Friday in front of a packed gym at Extravaganza, the Tsawwassen high school’s talent show. Students did a spoof on Glee, a hit TV show about high schoolers in a glee club.

The Corporation of Delta’s 2010 United Way campaign was its most successful to date raising a total of $52,882.76. This is the fifth consecutive year Delta has exceeded its fundraising goal. “The dedication of our employees to this worthwhile organization is exceptional,” said Mayor Lois Jackson. “Delta’s successful campaign is another example of staff’s steadfast commitment to the community.”

United Way has recognized Delta’s contribution by nominating the municipality for the Employee Campaign Loyalty Award to be handed out next March. Jackson, Delta council and chief administrative officer George Harvie thanked Delta’s United Way co-chairs, Kate Steel and Michele Harris, along with the United Way committee and staff, whose efforts and enthusiasm made this year’s campaign the best yet.

Name: Scott Age: 23 Occupation: Full-time post-secondary student and parttime skating instructor What is the activity? Teaching skating. Where & when does it take place? Saturday mornings at Sungod Recreation Centre . How often do you participate? Weekly How long have you been involved? Since fall of 2004. Why did you get involved in this activity? I started as a volunteer and made a good impression. I have always enjoyed helping out in my community and jumped at the chance to move up and teach skating. Working with young children is a wonderful opportunity as I get to play a part in their upbringing. What do you like best about this activity? I like the opportunity to get some exercise while working and teaching others about the joy of skating. How does it benefit your life? It guarantees me at least a once per week exercise while I continue with my postsecondary studies. What other things do you do to keep active? I am part of a volleyball team with Volleyball BC, playing games once a week on weekends. Did you know that anyone can learn to skate? Delta has lessons for people of all ages and abilities. Once you are steady on your skates, you might enjoy Delta’s Winter Wonderland at South Delta Recreation Centre. It is set up to provide an old-fashioned pond atmosphere and runs Tuesday, December 28th to 31st with the public welcome each day between 10am-12pm, 1:30-5pm, 6-8pm. The last day of Winter Wonderland is January 1 when admission is free and the arena is open 2 – 6pm. For more information on swim lessons, contact your local rec centre and for other ways to be active in Delta, call Parks, Recreation & Culture at 604.952.3000 or go to www.corp.delta.bc.ca.

IT’S WHY I LOVE TO DRIVE.

Let’s get the Party started

Popular minor hockey tournament will feature nearly 400 local players The party is about to get started. For the seventh straight year, South Delta Minor Hockey Association is getting set to host its immensely popular Party in da House Tournament — Dec. 28-Jan. 2 at all three local arenas. What makes this even so unique is it features the core of every minor hockey association — recreational level players — and it’s exclusively for South Delta teams. It adds up to nearly 400 players, ages seven to 18, getting the opportunity to play plenty of hockey during the holidays. For many, it’s the highlight of the season. There is more than local bragging rights at stake as the winner of each division — Atom, Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget — will get to represent South Delta in the annual Delta Cup game against teams from North Delta. Not only does the “Party in da House” feature great

hockey games, but there are also skills competitions for the athletes to compete in. The contests involve every team and they are great events to watch as parents, players and fans cheer on the athletes as they compete in skating, puck handling, shooting and goaltending. What has also made the tournament a big hit is the generous support from the business community. The lengthy list includes Delta-based Firstar Sports apparel which is a major sponsor. “They have generously donate player-of-the-game prizes for all the games!” said tournament chair Theresa Watts. “This company is an awesome example of the support this tournament receives from many local businesses. Firstar outfits many NHL players and now they also outfit our ‘Party in da House’ players! How cool is that!” The tournament also

Bruce MacLean of Firstar Sports drops the puck Chase Boutillie (left) of the Hockey 4 Force team and Mitch Marentette of the Midget Wolverines. Firstar is a major sponsor of next week’s seventh annual Party in da House Tournament. features a “Hockey for Hunger” competition. Teams compete by donating food into a large hockey net set up in the Ladner arena. The winning team in this competition gets a team lunch from the Boot and Sombrero

Restaurant in Ladner — one of the event’s terrific supporters. The real winner is the Delta Food Bank. Last year, the tournament was able to donate 1200 pounds of food. It’s an awesome way for the players to learn how to give

back to their community. There will also be a massive raffle with 80 prizes, including tickets to a Vancouver Canucks game, a Team Canada jersey and a Canucks jersey signed by both the Sedin brothers. The tournament also

received a financial boost from the recent South Delta Minor Hockey Night at the Vancouver Giants game. Proceeds from the 50/50 draw went directly to South Delta Hockey — as did local ticket sales with over 1,000 sold.

Royals enter break on high note Tsawwassen Royals Soccer Club concluded 2010 on a high note with both its entries in the Vancouver Metro Soccer League producing victories on the weekend. In Division 2C play, Tsawwassen enters the Christmas break atop of the table after a 3-1 home field win over the Douglas Park Rangers. The Vancouver visitors entered the match unbeaten in their last four and their level of play showed in a 1-0 halftime lead. The Royals had not played badly but tactically were missing a step . Coach Jim Norris implored his players to return to their ground passing game and the tactic paid off immediately at the start of the half as Skafti Sinclair missed on a couple of close in opportunities resulting from patient build-ups. An overlapping run and cross from fullback Bruce Richters found Miguel Curiel’s head in the penalty area for the tying goal in the 60th minute. The advantage

was clearly to the Royals at that point and Sinclair headed home a crossbar rebound after a wicked shot by super sub Andrew Hodges . Sinclair’s speed was no match for the Rangers defense and he was brought down in the penalty box and confidently converted the resulting penalty shot to secure the victory. Tsawwassen will resume its schedule in January with an 8-3-3 record. Meanwhile, the Royals reserve squad rolled to an 8-3 victory over Coquitlam Metro Ford Wolves. Tsawwassen was up 4-0 at half-time on the nine men Wolves, before the teams traded seven second half goals. Colin Jones recorded a hat trick, while Brad Kaltenegger and Tim Enno each scored twice. Andrew Hodges rounded out the scoring. The Royals finish the year with two straight wins and third in the VMSL CAT division.

HORSFORD Irene Mary (Nee Hulock)

Aug 21, 1923 - Dec 16, 2010

Sadly, we announce the passing of Irene Mary Horsford, released from pain and discomfort over many months which she handled with grace and appreciation for her caregivers. Irene was predeceased by her husband Frank, brother Walt, sister Helen and grandchildren Erick and Alexander. She will be lovingly missed by daughters Tania (Patrick deceased) Mordaunt, Fran (Harvey) Linton and grandchildren Natalie (Jason), Peter (Christine), Chad (Pei Pei), Carl (Veronika) as well as great grandchildren Kenzie, Jaylie, Ella, Oliver, Evan and her special friend, Nancy Kajel. Irene was born August 21st, 1923 in North Bay, Ontario, married Frank in Toronto and lived briefly in Calgary before arriving in B.C. She worked in financial institutions as a statistician and manager in Vancouver before living in Mission, White Rock and Delta. Irene was admired for her creativity, independence, commitment, intelligence, wonderful story telling, style and poise. She was passionate about the welfare of animals. If desired, a donation in Irene’s memory can be made to the SPCA. It is with deep gratitude that we thank all those at Delta View Life Extension Care Home (Eagle Point) in Delta for their compassionate and exemplary care of Irene. She has requested that there be no service but a family dinner will be held in her honour.

TRUTH IN ''EMPLOYMENT'' ADVERTISING Postmedia Community Publishing makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711, Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.

Writing an effective classified ad is easy when you know how. What follows is a step-by-step guide focusing on the time-tested principles of a successful ad. • Use a keyword. Start your ad with the item for sale, service offered or the job title. • Be descriptive. Give customers a reason to respond. Advertisers have found that the more information you provide, the better the response. • Limit abbreviations. Use only standard abbreviations to avoid confusion and misinterpretations. • Include price. Always include price of the item for sale. • How to respond. Always include a phone number (with area code) and/or street and email address.

SUDOKU

Fun By The Numbers

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Like puzzles? Then you'll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your Sudoku savvy to the test!
