To say Al and Phyllis Wawryk were surprised to be named recipients of the Citizen of the Year award at the Delta Chamber of Commerce’s Hats Off to Excellence gala is an understatement. “My wife and I were actually stunned,” Al Wawryk said a few days after the Friday night banquet. “We were absolutely flabbergasted.” The couple received a standing ovation and Phyllis was moved

With the recent blast of cold weather, South Delta’s emergency shelter opened its doors for the first time last weekend. Debbie Mitchell, who has helped organize the local effort at Ladner United Church to house the homeless during inclement weather, said the shelter was advised to open last Friday night. Initially, she said, the shelter was told to stay open until Wednesday morning but with the cold weather sticking around for a few more days the shelter has been advised to stay open until Friday morning. It officially opened Nov. 1, but last weekend was the first time the shelter was told to be ready to accept those in need. Mitchell said no one came on Friday or Saturday nights, but on Sunday one man took advantage of the facility. She said it was hard to put him back out into the cold early Monday morning, but the shelter only has enough volunteers to operate from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. The local shelter is one of many emergency facilities open to the homeless during extreme weather conditions from November to March. On nights where an extreme weather alert is issued, as was the case in the last few days, the church will convert its nursery into an overnight shelter for those with nowhere else to sleep. Anyone interested in volunteering with the local shelter is asked to contact Ladner United Church at 604-946-6254 or by e-mail at ladner.united@dccnet.com.

Gentner touted for leader With James facing unrest, website pops up calling on Delta North MLA to run for top job SANDOR GYARMATI
BY

SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Promoted by some as an ideal candidate to lead the provincial New Democrats, former Delta councillor Guy Gentner says his interest is first and foremost to represent the wishes of his riding. The NDP’s MLA for Delta North since 2005, Gentner’s name has surfaced as a possible replacement for Carole James. It’s a scenario that could be plausible in light of tumultuous events on the provincial scene, although at this point Gentner hasn’t said he intends to run for the job. The embattled Liberals, suffering from an all-time low in the opinion polls thanks in large part to the highly unpopular harmonized sales tax, continue to have well publicized problems, even after the announcement by Premier Gordon Campbell that he plans to step down. Although the next provincial election is still more than two years away, things seemingly should be turning in the New Democrats’ favour. However, the opposition party has problems of its own with James’ ability to lead it to victory openly doubted by dissidents. Last week, James, whose party has been defeated twice under her watch, was dealt another blow when Kootenay West MLA Katrine Conroy resigned as caucus whip. Columbia River-Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald had previously resigned as caucus chair following James’ expulsion of MLA Bob Simpson for his public criticism of her. The most recent resigna-

Delta North MLA Guy Gentner, some people’s choice to replace Carole James as NDP leader, has never been shy about speaking his mind. tion came a day before the party’s provincial council endorsed James’ leadership. If James can’t defend the challenges from within, the question then surfaces about a possible replacement. That’s where Gentner, the two-term MLA for Delta North and currently the critic for intergovernmental relations, might come in. Having served on Delta council from 1999 to 2005 under the TriDelta banner with Mayor Lois Jackson before making the jump to provincial politics, his name has surfaced as a possible leadership candidate. Recently, a website at www.hesourguy.weebly. com appeared carrying the title He’s Our Guy! Draft Guy Gentner for BCNDP Leader.
The site’s anonymous creators, calling themselves The Committee to Draft Guy Gentner for BCNDP Leadership, said the party needs to present another credible and progressive alternative. When the website appeared, Gentner had no comment about its content other than to note he was surprised by it and had no knowledge who’s behind it. At the NDP provincial council meeting last weekend, delegates voted by a large margin against a resolution for a leadership convention. However, 13 of 34 MLAs, including Gentner, did not don yellow scarves in a public demonstration of support for the leader. In an interview this week, Gentner, well known for being outspoken on issues
as an MLA and during his Delta council days, said he wasn’t offered a scarf. He also noted he wouldn’t have been comfortable with “flag waving.” Gentner hasn’t come out publicly questioning James’ leadership or her ability to win the next election. However, as far as the NDP holding a leadership convention, Gentner noted a large majority of the membership in his constituency indicated they wanted one. “Most of them didn’t necessary have objections to Carole per se, they just wanted an opportunity to reinvigorate, renew and rebuild. So I’ll stand up for what my members want me to do,” he said. “I think it’s positive. It would have meant a new mandate for Carole, per-
haps.” University of Victoria political science professor Dr. Norman Ruff told the Optimist the more puzzling aspect of the turmoil within the NDP is there’s no obvious successor to James, at least not anyone who might perform more effectively. John Horgan or Mike Farnworth could handle the leadership and Leonard Krog might take a run at it again, but probably none would be any better at improving the party’s standing, said Ruff. A leadership review for the NDP is held during the party’s convention. Under the party’s constitution, a leadership race would be triggered if a simple majority of convention delegates vote in favour of holding such a contest.
The ranks of independents joining Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington in the legislature continue to grow. Last week’s expulsion of MLA Bill Bennett from the Liberal caucus makes it four independents since Huntington successfully ran on her own in the last election. Bennett, the former energy minister, was tossed following harsh criticism of Premier Gordon Campbell. He’s joined by NDP MLA Bob Simpson, who was ejected by leader Carole James following his public criticism of her, and Peace River South MLA Blair Lekstrom, who quit the Liberal caucus over the HST. Huntington said the needs of British Columbians have been pushed aside by the wellpublicized turmoil within the Liberal ranks. “Whether it’s the premier, ministers or taxes, the B.C. government is imploding before our eyes. We are witnessing the spectacle that comes with the sudden unraveling of centralized power,” Huntington said. “Two former members of cabinet have decided truth is more important than position and principle more important than power,” Huntington continued. “When Mr. Bennett admitted to reporters that the system won’t put up with honesty, he was admitting what the people of Delta South declared at the ballot box: We are taking back government.”

B.C.’s finance minister made a stop in South Delta yesterday morning to dispel some myths about the HST. Delta’s three Rotary Clubs — Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta — have teamed up to raise money for the Rotary Ethics in Business Award and invited Colin Hansen to speak at a breakfast meeting at the Delta Town & Country Inn. Hansen said he welcomed the opportunity to speak to the crowd about the new, and controversial, harmonized sales tax, which went into effect July 1. “I think there’s an important decision that all British Columbians have to make,” he said, referring to next year’s referendum on the tax. In the lead up to the September referendum, Hansen said he is getting out and talking to various groups about the HST in an attempt to dispel a number of myths. He adamantly opposes the argument the government was planning to implement the HST before the 2009 provincial election. “We were not,” he said. He said the idea of harmonizing the GST and PST has been looked at by Ministry of Finance staff on several occasions since it was introduced by the
federal government in 1995. However, Hansen said, the B.C. government was long opposed to it because it was felt the regulations around the HST were too restrictive. Almost all of Delta’s new designated off-leash parks are now open. Several areas in all three communities have been designated as off-leash parks where dogs can roam free. Delta council agreed to create off-leash areas earlier this year. Parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz said the 11 of the 13 sites are now available, each having new dog waste bag dispensers and signage. He said at the two remaining locations the municipality still requires agreements with landowners, including a hydro rightof-way in North Delta and part of Paterson Park owned by Kwantlen Polytechnic University. The off-leash parks now available in Tsawwassen are Dennison Park, Pebble Hill hydro corridor, Beach Grove Park and Deltaowned land adjacent to the now-closed Boundary Beach Elementary.

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW Let’s just shut up and win the next one. I suspect that had to be the thinking of the NDP’s provincial council, which voted 84 per cent last weekend against holding a leadership convention next year. Carole James’ supporters have every right to view the move as an endorsement of the party’s current leader, although cynics might suggest it has much more to do with stabilizing a boat that can finally see port. The Liberals are floundering in the polls and it doesn’t appear a saviour will appear before the party holds its own leadership convention next year. Watching the Liberals imploding before their very eyes, New Democrats should be poised to form government — all they have to do for the next 30 months is sit back, be quiet and enjoy the show from a front row seat. Yet just as things are looking up for the NDP, internal fighting threatens to torpedo the party. Dissension within caucus ranks has been gaining strength in recent weeks, initially fueled by James’ expulsion of MLA Bob Simpson and then bolstered by the resignations of both the caucus chair and whip. Many MLAs refused to endorse James’ leadership when pressed on the issue by media in Victoria. With the party possibly headed toward a Liberal-like meltdown, it’s clear the provincial council was going to take whatever steps were necessary to avoid that fate, endorsing James and averting a divisive leadership battle first and foremost among them. It remains to be seen, however, whether backing the MLA from Victoria-Beacon Hill, who became leader seven years ago yesterday and has failed to take the NDP to the promised land in two subsequent elections, was the right move in the long run. The get-in-line-behind-Carole edict prevents an airing of the NDP’s dirty laundry and suggests to the public there’s only one dysfunctional party in B.C., but I’m not so sure it puts the whole leadership issue to bed. If all is not well, and that certainly seems to be the case in the NDP caucus these days, it won’t magically get better just because the provincial council says so. I understand the reluctance to embrace a leadership convention, particularly given the state of the Liberals, but it should be remembered that two-and-ahalf years can be an eternity in politics. It’s more than enough time for a party sagging in the polls to rebuild its fortunes and it’s also an extremely long time to keep whatever dissatisfaction exists from bubbling to the surface.
Term limits allow politicians to keep in touch with reality DEBBIE McBRIDE
COMMUNITY COMMENT In the words of a past vaudevillian comedian, “It’s a fine mess we’ve gotten ourselves into, isn’t it?” That’s an apt observation of today’s politics, the sorry state of which has turned governing into a comedic tragedy worthy of a vaudeville stage. How is it that we’ve arrived at a situation where politicians generally are held not just in disrepute, but with such deep contempt? Indeed, the entire political process has become a source of public distrust and every government action is viewed with suspicion. I’d venture to say it’s because many politicians have been acting in ways that have brought their reputations to the low point in the way society views them and the public may be justified in its cynicism.
Yet it’s not really politicians’ fault they’ve stopped listening to regular citizens and doing the job those who elected them wanted them to do. That job included keeping taxes to a minimum, spending those tax dollars wisely and implementing the promises and policies that had been sold to citizens during the election process. That, as we increasingly see, doesn’t happen. Politicians have become our rulers rather than citizens doing their civic duty. We have even arrived at a place where we are unable to attract new, enthusiastic people to run for those much maligned political offices. It’s time to fix that and we can get a good start by putting term limits on our elected officials. Holding political office is supposed to be the place where rule by autocrats and bureaucrats is held in check by the representatives of the people. Elected officials are there to give voice to those who put them in office and keep the voices of the people firmly at the forefront. Let’s face it, politicians have a lot of power over our lives and it’s in society’s best interest to keep that power in check. That power

can be co-opted when politicians stay too long at the public trough. They develop Rock Star Syndrome. A political career, like a musical one, usually starts as an avocation, which can become a successful career. All of sudden you’re given perks and special status and all that can be just too good to give up. The money, the power, the very specialness becomes an expectation. The power, of course, attracts those who are happy to use that influence for their own agenda and suddenly the line is drawn between “us” and “them.” Rock stars, after their last record bombs, are often forced back to playing in the neighbourhood bars they started out at. We need the same remedy for politicians. Let them run for two terms and then make them take a break and be removed from the hallowed halls of power. Later, after a taste of reality, let them run again. Politicians counter this by saying it takes time to learn how things get done in government. They obviously need reminding that in real life, taking a more than a couple of months to learn your job is reason for dismissal.

Aircraft Alley is living up to its name once again Editor: How can one tell winter is fast approaching? That’s easy, just tune in early mornings and you will hear the regular hum of aircraft descending over South Delta. If you are unfortunate enough to live close to 56th Street near Point Roberts, you may be especially disturbed. (I did suggest some
time ago that 56th street be re-named “Aircraft Alley.”) It was interesting to hear at last week’s Delta council meeting that YVR has installed a temporary noise monitoring station in Ladner. Are residents of that community even aware of this as the station has not yet appeared on web trak? On Dec. 6, YVR representatives are to meet with
council. If anyone in South Delta is being disturbed, please note your concerns (noise@yvr.ca) or 604-2077097, or go to YVR’s online web trak. Residents of South Surrey, with support of their mayor, took on unfriendly skies. It makes one wonder if that noise is being directed over South Delta! Jean Wightman
Great time at McKee anniversary dinner Editor: We attended the fifth anniversary dinner and dance at McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre on Oct. 29 and just wanted to acknowledge all the volunteers who helped to make that evening special. There was a great crew
of servers making sure we all were fed, then clearing the tables, pouring coffee and tea with a smile. Then the musicians and singers kept us up dancing or tapping our toes ... all volunteers. A great time was had by all. We are so fortunate to
have this facility in our little town of Ladner as it’s so accessible for seniors. However, we can’t forget that it wouldn’t happen without people volunteering. We are grateful for their generosity. The Rithalers and gang at Table 12.

Editor: I want to again express thanks on behalf of Bruno Epp’s siblings — Penticton to Chilliwack, spouse Gail in Montana — for the compassionate and patient attention he is receiving from the nurses and care-
givers at the extended care unit of Delta Hospital. We are always welcomed by the visitor-friendly staff and can leave with optimism that Bruno is left in the best of care. Denise, his most frequent visitor, whom Bruno calls his angel, will
attest to this. It’s also important to mention the many friendly volunteers and the residents who make a significant contribution to the cheerful environment at Delta Hospital. George H. Epp
Tribute to Edgar naturally comes in form of limerick Editor: What a fitting tribute to Edgar Dunning earlier this month. To see so many people at the church, it goes to show you just how many lives he touched, including your humble scribe
who said that his limericks would keep coming. So in respect of the celebration of life, I offer this verse: The celebration of life for Edgar was a ball, There were so many
moist eyes round the hall, It’s OK to shed a tear, For a man we held so dear, For his loving memory will stay among us all. R.I.P. Edgar Ken Oakley

I’m writing to express my support for changing the laws back so we can drink while driving. It’s a right. I should be able to have a few drinks when I go out, so long as I’m careful. Besides, I’ve heard you get less injured if you crash while drinking, because you’re more relaxed. There was blood everywhere. The nurses were cleaning up the body while the housekeepers mopped the floor. The trauma team had left, because there wasn’t really anything more for it to do. I looked at her body. Was she even 20 years old? She had her new party dress on. It lay on the side of the bed, shredded after we’d cut it to get at her. After all, the people that cause car crashes are usually just drunks, not regular people. And I can tell when I’m drunk. Also, there aren’t any buses running when I’m ready to wrap up
after a night out, so what do they expect me to do? It’s not my fault. They brought in the white body bag after they had cut the lines and tubes. You have to roll the body to one side, slip the bag under, then roll to the other side and pull the bag underneath. Try not to get the blood and fluids on the outside of the bag — it looks bad when you roll the stretcher out of emergency. They left her dress on the bed. No more parties. And what about the restaurants? They’re losing money because people are worried they can’t drink. Is that fair? Same thing happened when they banned smoking — another stupid law. Although I guess the restaurants are doing OK after that, but still, it was tough for a while there. I looked at the social worker, and we both took a breath. We had done this together too often. She had found the family, and they were already waiting
Everybody hates it not a valid reason BY
THOMAS FALCONE

The HST may be one of the most unpopular initiatives to emanate from a B.C. provincial government since the infamous fast ferries. The B.C. Liberals have decided to hold a referendum next year to determine the fate of the hated consumption tax. This brings up an interesting question: How important is a law’s popularity in determining its validity? There are many things about the HST to dislike. First of all, it’s a consumption tax that everybody pays regardless of their socioeconomic status. Consider this situation: two people are purchasing an essential household appliance (a washing machine or a refrigerator). One of them makes $10,000 a year and the other makes $100,000 a year; the appliance costs $500. They will both have to pay 12 per cent tax on their purchase, which is $60. To the appliance buyer that earns $100,000 a year, $60 is a fairly insignificant amount of money, but $60 probably means a lot to somebody who only makes $10,000 annually. Something about this
seems morally amiss to me and I think suggesting “the HST is fundamentally unfair” is a far more powerful argument than saying “everybody hates the HST.” Sometimes governments make just laws that are unpopular, and sometimes governments rescind popular laws that are unjust. One of the most important but unappreciated things about life in a liberal democracy like ours is that we don’t put everything to a vote, and we shouldn’t. The only thing that is scarier than the prospect of an absence of democracy is the tyranny of the majority. Just because most people are against something, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it. And just because most people support something, doesn’t mean we should do it. The scale of validity our society uses to judge the merit of laws should weigh how just they are, not how popular they are. So, yes, the HST may be a very bad idea. But I don’t think we should argue it’s a bad idea just because most of us don’t like it. Thomas Falcone is pursuing a double minor B.A. in political science and philosophy. He has been a student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University since 2006.
in a special area of the emergency department. We called it “the family room.” Ironic, because it was where a lot of families came to an end. We headed toward the hall. I wondered, as I always did, what I would say. I mean, I feel badly about people who get hurt by drunk drivers, but how much harm can a couple of drinks do? All I’m saying is, let’s not overreact. Let’s try not to hurt people, but
let’s not take away my fun, OK? They looked rough. Anyone would — it was late, and they had the growing dread that only comes when you get called to the hospital at two in the morning. She had soft eyes, and they were already wet. He looked like he’d worked hard with his hands all his life, and he had them clasped tightly in front of him. There was a younger daughter with them, already
angry, refusing to look at either of us. We introduced ourselves, and sat down. I took a breath. What I’m saying is people should be able to have a couple of drinks at dinner. If people can’t hold their liquor, then they shouldn’t be going out. And another thing, people get in crashes without drinking, so why all the fuss? I told them as best as I could. There is, of course, no good way. She sobbed,
and grabbed her husband’s arm. He put his head in his hands, and just said: “Oh, my little girl,” and didn’t move. The younger daughter moved toward her parents, hostility gone, scared now, and they both grabbed her and clung on. She was all they had left. I felt sick. And sad. And angry. I think you see my point. Dr. Bruce Campana, a former Tsawwassen resident, is an emergency physician now living in Sooke.

Cummins gives fish inquiry a failing grade Cohen’s interim report gets an “F” as MP says it fails to assess how Ottawa is managing Fraser River fishery
The Cohen Inquiry has issued its first report three months late. The report weighs in at 680 grams (or nearly one-and-a-half pounds) and has 302 pages. If prizes were awarded for weight or number of pages, the report would be given high marks; for content it
investigations that were directly relevant to his inquiry, Cohen simply summarizes the recommendations of 22 different reports. Some were noteworthy but most were inconsequential. Instead of making substantive assessments of how the government implemented or failed to implement recommendations, he merely summarized in point form what the government claimed to have done. Fishermen have not forgotten the investigations by Peter Pearse, John Fraser and Bryan Williams. All heard considerable evidence of widespread and ongoing problems in the administration and enforcement of aboriginal fisheries. Their reports contained a long series of recommendations with regard to addressing the problems in the administration and enforcement. This interim report paid scant attention to these issues. There are many references to the Supreme Court’s decision in Sparrow, but only one to the Van der
Peet decision and it made no mention of the fact the court rejected a Sto:lo claim to an aboriginal right to sell or trade salmon, an issue central to many of the fisheries management and enforcement problems on the Fraser. The interim report sets out the various technical and scientific studies the inquiry has established yet seems blind to the obvious problem of using former DFO staff to conduct such work when the inquiry has, as its first order of business, a review of DFO departmental management policies and practices. In addition it is never explained why the commission is undertaking such work. Cohen’s terms of reference never requested such scientific studies. Furthermore, the interim report was never to be a recitation of what the commission was doing; its sole task was to evaluate or judge the value or quality of previous studies and the government’s implementation of their recommenda-
tions. At no time does Cohen explain why he failed to make the required assessments. While DFO is undoubtedly relieved at not having to face any assessment of its failures to implement earlier investigations, Cohen’s inaction is not something that can be put at the door of DFO. It was Cohen’s job and he failed to do it. Cohen claims his staff “toiled long hours to get the commission in operation as quickly and efficiently as possible.” Fishermen might be tempted to ask to what end? Cohen and his staff have clearly wasted their first year. There is nothing in this interim report on how DFO might make changes in its management of the 2011 fishery. Most importantly this is not the report that was asked for, nor is it what fishermen had reason to hope for when the Cohen Inquiry was established one year ago.

Baby steps on road to lunch self-sufficiency LIVING MATTERS Yesterday, a co-worker brought spaghetti and meatballs for lunch. The day before, another brought a panini — on bread she made herself. I’d like to report that I brought pasta primavera or thinly sliced flank steak on rye. But I did not. I brought $7.50, and waltzed off to the nearby sandwich joint. Where bringing lunch to work is concerned, I’d like to say I try. And I do. I stock up on ham. I stock up on multi-sized containers. But then, well, the ham finds itself three days past its best-before date. And I

Name: Mike Age: 25 Occupation: Security and Canadian Armed Forces What is the activity? Working out, both cardio and weights. Where & when does it take place? Ladner Leisure Centre, in the Weight Room and the Pool. How often do you participate? Two to four times per week How long have you been involved? Three years. Why did you get involved in this activity? Because my scale said 300 lbs! I decided I wanted to be fit and healthy . What do you like best about this activity? I love the facility and the friendly staff. I also love the hot tub. How does it benefit your life? It helps me in many ways: I have more energy, I am happy when I look in the mirror and it helps to be fit in my career. What other things do you do to keep active? I walk the dog, go rock climbing and I run. Did you know that a combination of weight training and cardiovascular exercise is the best prescription for physical health? Weight training builds the muscles we need to remain strong while cardio exercise builds endurance and healthy heart function. If you want to be even more ‘well-rounded’, you can add in some flexibility training such as Pilates or yoga. All of these activities help us attain and then maintain a healthy weight, sleep better and fight disease. If you want to give a gift of good health this Christmas, ask about fitness package options at your local rec centre. sional cleaning. Oh, and did I mention she goes to night school twice a week? And that she comes to work, not only dressed, but in clothes that have been ironed within the previous day or two? She makes her lunch, my colleague. She’s something of a miracle woman. “I wish I had chow mein,” I groaned. “It’s from last night,” she said. “Why don’t you just pack up last night’s dinner and bring it to work?” I thought of the suggestion. For one thing, I told her, that would involve at
least two minutes of my time, two minutes that would have to be lopped off either my bedtime or my morning wake-up. “And for another, I’d actually have to remember to do it,” I pointed out. “I’d never remember.” “Write yourself a reminder,” she said. “Tape it on a cupboard door.” “But then I’d have to remember to write a reminder,” I said. “I’d never remember that.” The colleague smiled sweetly and began to eat the lunch she’d brought. It
looked so, well, unlike anything sold at the sandwich joint. “Tomorrow,” I told her. “Tomorrow, I do it.” So I went home. And the colleague went off to night school and/or hockey, after which she probably knit up a new sweater to wear to work the next day. “Weeeell,” said the perfectly outfitted, ever-restfullooking colleague the next morning. “What did you bring for lunch?” I fell into my chair, and tossed my purse on my desk.
“It’s from last night,” she said. “Why don’t you just pack up last night’s dinner and bring it to work?” “A banana,” I said. “And a can of chicken noodle soup. You wouldn’t happen to have a can opener, would you? And a stove?” OK, so it wasn’t exactly the perfect lunch, but it’s a move in the right direction. I’ll bring the Mr. Noodles next. And some day, with luck, chow mein.

An apple. Some homemade oatmeal cookies. And some chicken chow mein.” “You make the noodles?” I asked. She looked at me as though I’d lost it. “Are you kidding?” she asked. “Who has time for that?” The colleague, apparently. Could falling back be making us fat? A British professor seems to think so.
bring about a slump in the psyche, often leading to a mood disorder, which affects a substantial amount of Canadians every year, Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.).
Reluctant Patients
Mayer Hillman, the senior fellow emeritus at the University of Westminster in London, has written an essay in the British Medical Journal claiming that losing an hour of daylight each fall could be contributing to obesity and illness levels in the U.K. and abroad.
“Seasonal Affective Disorder ... is influenced by the ability of the person who is affected by it to have enough exposure to sunlight or UV light, or light in general.”
Divide and Conquer
Hillman discusses the lack of exercise in the U.K. as the main factor in the country’s rising obesity levels, and notes that an extra hour of darkness in the evenings makes people even less likely to go outside and be active.
Lu suggests our location in the northern hemisphere is the main issue for local sufferers. Because the difference in the length of daylight between winter and summer days is so pronounced due to our latitudinal whereabouts, that the effects of S.A.D. are increased.
“It’s an interesting hypothesis, but I don’t think we have any evidence from rigorous research to back that up,” says Dr. James Lu, the acting medical officer for the North Shore.
Among the symptoms of S.A.D. is a craving for carbohydrates, or “comfort foods,” which can lead to weight gain. Lu feels a direct link between the

clocks going back in fall and obesity is rather tenuous, but considers this possibility should be of interest to researchers and warrants further examination. One recommended treatment for S.A.D. is light therapy, using fluorescent lamps to replicate the additional hours of daylight in the summer months. Alternatively, one effective remedy for both is already programmed into us.
Foods for healthier skin
throughout the year, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevators at work. So despite the extra hour of darkness brought about by turning back the clocks, we can still make the most of our rainy, dark winter months.
It is common sense that a healthy, balanced diet is good for overall skin health, but there is a lack of scientific evidence to show that certain foods specifically prevent wrinkles, acne or other skin problems.
Get up to the mountains, strap on your skis, snowboards or snowshoes, or get to a fun dance class at your local gym. Get motivated and feel better all year round.
Winter Exercise Ideas
When we are depressed, we go against our natural tendencies to be active. By getting the motivation to up our levels of fitness, we can stave off the blues and any unwanted pounds. The key is to be prepared for the oncoming time and weather fluctuation, says Lu. “Seasons change and we do need to adjust in terms of physical activity.” Lu recommends braving the winter chill and getting active outside. “You could still go for a walk or run in the winter in Vancouver, you may need to adjust to the rain or dress appropriately.” At this time of year, raking leaves is a great way to stay in shape, he says. Later on during the winter, shoveling snow is marvelous for the cardiovascular system. Lu recommends making small changes to your daily routine that can be kept up
It is more likely that in our busy lives surrounded by fast food, caffeine and sugary treats, we lack the basic vitamins and minerals that help to protect our skin cells.
Outside Add lights to your running gear to exercise more safely outdoors. Lights that can be fastened to your belt, bag or buttonholes are available at MEC from $3.75.
Here are the top foods for healthy skin:
Enjoy our beautiful mountains. See why the grey winters here are an inspiration to so many. Admire the scenery and enjoy the snow. Grouse Mountain is easily accessible by car and transit and offers many different activities, including skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and ice skating.
Berries, broccoli and beans: To keep your skin healthy, you should load up on these antioxidant rich fruit and vegetables. Antioxidants can protect your skin from the inside out, by neutralizing damaging free radicals, which harm your skin cells and are believed to contribute to wrinkling and sagging. Though they are naturally good for you, taking antioxidant supplements can be harmful. A balanced diet is all you need to get your quota of antioxidants.
Inside Look into the inexpensive and fun fitness programs at your local community centres. Why not try a class, or enjoy a dip at your local swimming pool. See why so many people love yoga. Visit one of the wide varieties of yoga classes for beginners to advanced yogis and feel your spirits rise.

Salmon, sardines and flax seeds: Rich in omega-3, the essential fatty acid, which is believed to help skin retain moisture and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Carrots, kale and spinach: These vitamin A rich foods helps repairs damaged skin cells and resists the bacterial growth that leads to acne. Citrus fruit, tomatoes and peppers: Packed with vitamin C, these foods can help prevent some DNA damage from the sun, which leads to early signs of aging.
Once the problem foods have been identified, it is important to see a registered dietitian to ensure your child is still getting all their nutrients from a balanced diet.
Cristina Sutter is a registered dietitian at Satori Integrated Health Centre in Steveston. She has 10 years of experience providing nutrition and exercise counseling and seminars.

Dietitian Cristina Sutter recommends a balanced diet for healthier looking skin.
Brazil nuts, tuna and garlic: Rich in the trace mineral selenium, these foods also have antioxidant properties. One skin condition to be aware of: Eczema in babies and children may be linked to certain food sensitivities. Some cases of eczema may improve by avoiding foods to which there is a known sensitivity. Common foods that can cause problems include milk products, nuts and shellfish, but a doctor or naturopath can pinpoint your child’s specific food sensitivities.

“Going back to how we’re built and what we’re meant to be as a human living being — we’re meant to be moving,” says Lu.
Almonds, avocados and soybean oil: These “good fats” are rich in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant believed to help keep skin firm.

Does PAIN keep you from living your life?
Men less likely to get a regular check up
TRY CHIROPRACTIC
IT WORKS
JIM GIBSON
Men shy away from medical checkups, according to a U.S. study. It’s a finding local general practitioners don’t dispute.
❑ Are you a slave to migraine or tension headaches? ❑ Do you feel that your low back and neck pains are robbing you of quality time with your family? ❑ Are you worried about tingling? ❑ Are you unable to lift objects because of painful arthritis? ❑ Are there activities in life you are unable to do because of pain and discomfort?
Just 57 per cent of men, compared to 74 per cent of women, had had a routine medical checkup within the past 12 months, according to a report by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. “That doesn’t surprise me,” general practitioner Chris Pengilly says, estimating women comprise 60 per cent of his appointments. GP and author Dave Hepburn says female patients outnumber men among his 20- to 50-year-olds.
If you are answering YES - Stop suffering, WE CAN HELP • Chiropractic is a natural, effective and drug-free solution • Chiropractic is cost effective • Chiropractic is scientifically proven as an effective method of treating many of today’s health problems. • Adjustments don’t hurt - They actually feel good
Both doctors find men start showing up — reluctantly — in their 50s for prostatecancer testing. They often claim it wasn’t their idea to book an appointment.
Call today for your complimentary consultation.
“A lot of men say, ‘I’m here because my wife wanted me to come,’ “ Hepburn says. He has even heard of men seeing a doctor as a “gift” to their wives.

Why women outnumber men comes down to their familiarity with routine testing and

Men are more likely to embrace stoicism than women, according to Hepburn. “They like to think of themselves as omnipotent and ‘disease won’t get me,’ “ Pengilly says. The rationalization is: If you can’t touch it or feel it, a medical problem doesn’t exist. They are also scared, he adds. “You don’t have cancer until the doctor tells you you do.” If you’re young and healthy, you probably don’t need to see a doctor, Hepburn says. However, just as cars need regular checkups as the mileage ramps up, so do men as they pile on the years. What usually brings a man into his office is the sudden death or potentially fatal diagnosis of a friend, colleague or family member. “It’s a shot across the bow,” Hepburn says, adding, “Fear is a great motivator.”

men’s general aversion to doctors’ offices. Women are used to coming for such tests as pap smears and mammograms. For men, routine testing is “quite foreign,” Hepburn says. Yet regular testing for prostate cancer, diabetes and colon cancer gives their doctors a baseline to note any changes.

Divide your plate and conquer your nutritional battles Now, fill one half of it with vegetables. Divide the remaining half into quarters. Fill one quarter with whole-grain carbohydrates. Fill the remaining quarter with protein. Bingo — you’ve controlled your portions, managed your caloric intake and ensured you get enough vegetables for long-term health and disease prevention, because “it’s loading your plate with lots of colour and antioxidants,” says Andrea Holwegner, a registered dietitian. And because the technique provides a good balance of carbohydrates and protein, it also serves to stabilize blood sugar and control appetite. It works for all three meals. “We teach our clients that at
Not surprisingly, the size of the plate itself counts with this strategy. Like portions, dinner and glassware have been supersized over the years. In 1912, for example, a serving of pop was the size of “a little Styrofoam cup,” Holwegner says. Now glasses are double and triple that size. With the endless refills in restaurants people are drinking a litre or more of pop over the course of a meal. Dr. Brian Wansink, a leading food psychologist from the U.S., found that downsizing from a 12-inch dinner plate to a 10-inch one encourages people to eat 22 per cent less. “Food psychology research suggests you’ll perceive the
food to look bigger when it’s on a smaller plate, versus the same portion on a bigger plate,” says Holwegner, who explains that people feel “cheated” with the big plate but perceive more “abundance” with the smaller one and therefore eat less. You can also use a little food psychology to boost your intake of veggies. Most people struggle to eat a half plate of, say, broccoli, even if they like it. “Dr. Wansink’s done a lot of studies on the variety of foods, and we know that the more variety of food you’re offered at a meal, the more you’ll eat. This can work to your advantage when we’re trying to get more vegetables onto the plate. If you have two types of vegetables, you’ll likely eat more than if you just have one type.” Dividing your plate is a fast and easy way to get started on a weight-loss program, but people can still sabotage
their efforts with second helpings, heaping food on their plate or “adjusting their visual cues.” A reminder: the protein should be the size of the palm of your hand; the carbohydrates the size of your fist (at least one-half of your daily carbs should be whole grain); and the produce as much as you can hold in two open hands. Keep in mind what you’ve eaten throughout the course of a day and adjust accordingly. “When I eat pasta it’s going to be more than a fist,” says Holwegner. “But that’s not the day to start with a bagel, eat a foot-long sandwich for lunch and then have two or three cups of pasta — unless you’re underweight and training for an Ironman!”

The Flow’s artistic director and founder Julie Brash (left) and faculty member Sarah Siviter are offering a $500 scholarship to local dancers.
Dance company is offering $500 scholarship
The Flow Dance Company is offering a $500 scholarship to local dancers. “We feel this would be a good way of giving money back to the dance world,” said Julie Brash, the artistic director and founder of The Flow, a group that received non-profit status in 2005. The scholarship was created with proceeds from a show put on by the dance group earlier this year. Dance students in grades 10 to 12, who are taking their dance education in Ladner or Tsawwassen, can apply. Brash said an impartial adjudicator will look over submissions. The submission deadline is Dec. 13 and the recipient will be announced at a Flow performance on Jan. 30 at
Genesis Theatre in Ladner. Applicants must submit: • A dance resume, accompanied by a covering letter. • An essay of 5,000 words, as to why the dancer believes he or she should be the recipient of the scholarship. • A two-and-a-half- to three-minute video of original choreography, performed by entrant or, with their teacher’s/choreographer’s permission, if the choreography has not been done by the student. Submissions can be sent to: The Flow Dance Scholarship Adjudicator, C/O 13-5600 Ladner Trunk Rd., Delta, B.C., V4K 1X4. For more information contact Sarah Siviter at Sarah@deltawolf.com.

Lead & dream vanishes on Sun Devils South Delta blows 18 point cushion as season ends with heartbreaking quarter-final playoff loss to Handsworth MARK BOOTH
mbooth@delta-optimist.com
The South Delta Sun Devils’ second half vanishing act wound up costing them their season. Despite entering the high school football playoffs with four consecutive wins, the Devils’ lack of offensive production in the final two quarters this season was a major concern. Sure enough it was the difference between advancing to the semi-finals and going home. South Delta opened up an 18-0 first half lead but didn’t score again in a 2118 quarter-final loss to the fourth ranked Handsworth Royals last Friday at a chilly UBC Thunderbird Stadium. “It’s one of those things we will be looking at in the extended off-season,” sighed
Devils head coach Ray Moon who watched his team also get blanked in the second half by Seaquam and Sands, only to win both times. “It might just have to do with our lack of depth. The guys are going all out in the first half and are basically tired in the second half. We had 10 seniors that we relied upon a lot this season.” The Sun Devils were clinging to an 18-15 fourth quarter lead when the Royals’ Mitchell Barnett intercepted a Mitch Rushton pass with 5:12 remaining. Handsworth then put together its best drive of the game — culminating with quarterback Stephen Cyr scoring on a one-yard sneak with 2:46 left. South Delta marched down to the Royals 40-yard-line only to turn the ball over when Rushton was sacked on fourth down. The Devils’ defence produced nine sacks,

two interceptions and a pair of fumble recoveries yet it still wasn’t enough. “Taylor Harrison, Riley Jones and Trevor McDonald were dominant,” said Moon of his top defensive players. “They were in (Cyr’s) grill the entire game. “This is one of the strongest groups I have worked with in years and it’s a real missed opportunity.” The Sun Devils opened the scoring when Josh Cochrane hauled in a 22-yard touchdown pass from Rushton on a fourth-and-13 play in the opening quarter. Running back Ray Calderwood, who courageously played on an injured knee, played a big part in his team’s second major. He converted a fourth and two from the Handsworth 19-yard-line then scored two plays later from eight yards out. The third major came courtesy of Harrison, as the standout lineman lined-up
at fullback and rumbled his way into the end zone from the six-yard-line. It was a tough outing for the Sun Devils on special teams as all three convert attempts were missed, including a two-point try. South Delta also surrendered a 62-yard kickoff return to Royals’ star back Victor Sun. The short field led to Handworth’s opening touchdown and provided momentum, heading into the second half. “Between the turnovers and some poor kicks, we just kept giving them good field position to work with,” added Moon. “The kids did leave everything on the field and were absolutely exhausted by the end of the game. “They also were upset with the situation, knowing they were definitely capable of beating them.”

Stewart earns top honours
Former Sun Devil soccer standout named B.C. Colleges player of the year
Tsawwassen’s Reynold Stewart has been named the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association’s Men’s Soccer Player of the Year after an outstanding season with the Douglas College Royals. The former South Delta Sun Devil standout and Tsawwassen Soccer Club product was the British Columbia Colleges Athletic Association’s leading scorer for the second year in a row, netting 15 goals in 12 games. In the past two years, he’s twice been named BCCAA Player of the Year, as well as BCCAA provincial championship MVP and BCCAA first team all-star. He has played for the Royals soccer team throughout his three years at Douglas College. Ray Sarkis, vice-president of programs for the CCAA, cited Stewart’s statistics in the award’s selection process. “Stewart has had an incredible record this season,” said Sarkis, further highlighting the Douglas College’s team accomplishments. The Royals were undefeated, finishing the
Reynold Stewart regular season ranked first in both the BCCAA and the CCAA. The Douglas College Athletic Department describes Stewart as a “leader both on and off the field. He
puts team success above individual success and takes every opportunity to help himself and those around him become better athletes and individuals.” During the off-season, Stewart plays with Richmond Hibernia of the Vancouver Metro Soccer League and gives back to his sport by helping out with soccer camps. Unfortunately, an injury hurt the Royals chances of repeating as provincial champions. In the semi-finals against UNBC, Stewart managed to net the equalizer in the 55th minute. However, he would later leave the game with a foot injury and UNBC completed the upset with a 2-1 win. Douglas did manage to beat Thompson Rivers 2-1 in the bronze medal game, despite Stewart’s absence. Other finalists included Patrice Dion (Francois-Xavier Garneau), Kailen Murphy (Seneca College), Brian Peters (University of New Brunswick-Saint John) and midfielder Thiago Silva (NAIT).

OLIVER, Margaret Helen (nee Carr)
October, 1918 – November, 2010
It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Margaret Oliver, beloved Mom, Grams, Gigi on November 11, 2010 in Royal Columbian Hospital, New Westminster, BC. Margaret was born in Barrie, Ontario. She is predeceased by 3 of her sisters, Marion, Isabel and Enid. Left to mourn are her sisters Wilda and Joan, her loving son Jim (Verna), granddaughter Alisen (Martin) and great-grandson Cole; her loving daughter Carole (Lou), grandchildren David, Cyndi (Julian), Kristine and great-grandchildren Megan and Emma; also many nieces and nephews. In 1953 Margaret and family ventured to the west coast, residing in Princeton for a year, then moving to Kitimat in 1954, where she began working at Canada Post in 1962. She transferred in 1972 to the Tsawwassen Post Office, where she worked until her retirement in 1983. She enjoyed retirement, travelling while she was able, going to the Casino, but most of all, the times she was surrounded by her loving family. In later years her failing eyesight limited her to spending her days knitting “dish rags” and giving them away, listening to her talking books, and having a daily Caesar at “Happy Hour”. In the last few months she resided at the Assisted living Kinsmen Centre, where she enjoyed the supportive care she received from all the staff and the residents she met. Special thanks to the staff of the Kinsmen Assisted Living, the Doctors and Nursing staff at Delta Hospital and Royal Columbian Hospital. A Memorial Service was held at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road in Ladner on Monday, November 22nd, 2010 at 1:00 PM, with a private family interment at Boundary Bay Cemetery. Reception followed at private family home. In lieu of flowers, donations to the CNIB or charity of your choice would be appreciated. “We miss you Mom, Grams, Granny, GiGi, “Li’l M”, Auntie Marg, Jimmy & Margie. We are thankful you are not suffering anymore. The angels will be happy to hear your comic relief. You were so loved, and will be so missed.” On-line condolences at: www.deltafuneral.ca.
