Crown contends cover up Trial begins for man charged with killing wife and dumping her body on Deltaport Way BY
TOM ZYTARUK
Optimist contributor
A former Surrey teacher on trial for the 2006 murder of his pregnant wife staged a missing persons complaint with police in an attempt to conceal the crime, the Crown alleges. Mukhtiar Singh Panghali, 38, is being tried for second-degree murder and interfering with a dead body in the strangulation of his wife, Manjit Panghali, 30, in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster.
Prosecutor Dennis Murray outlined the Crown’s case at the beginning of the trial Monday morning. The Crown alleges Panghali killed his wife after she’d returned home from a prenatal yoga class, staged the discovery of her car in Whalley, burned her body on a South Delta beach and then delayed for as long as he could to lodge a missing persons complaint with the Surrey RCMP. His wife’s charred remains were discovered along Deltaport Way several days later.

She was four months pregnant with couple’s second child. Panghali originally elected to be tried by judge and jury but last month decided to be tried by a judge alone. With head shaved and wearing a white dress shirt, Panghali listened intently from the prisoner’s dock as Murray told Justice Heather Holmes the couple had been “in the throes of some difficulty in their relationship” at the time. The court heard Panghali reported his wife missing to

police “about 26 hours” after her disappearance. When he’d been encouraged by others to call police sooner, Murray alleged, Panghali gave various reasons why he didn’t want to do that. The prosecutor accused Panghali of making a “concentrated effort to cover up the fact” he saw his wife after her yoga class, and tried to create an “impression” of concern. “The accused was not telling the truth,” Murray alleged. The trial continues.

A Tsawwassen man was sentenced Friday in a Seattle courtroom to more than four years in jail for mail fraud. Barrie Turner, 66, was sentenced to 51 months in prison, three years of supervised release and ordered to pay more than $300,000 in restitution. Earlier this year, Turner was arrested and charged with mail fraud in connection with the operation of a series of fake “executive dating” websites. He was arrested in March trying to cross the border into Point Roberts as part of a U.S. Postal Inspection Service investigation into Executive Dating LLC, which ran Executive Catholic Dating and Executive Gay Dating among other matchmaking websites. In total, he operated more than 200 “executive dating” websites. Turner pleaded guilty to the charges earlier this year. At his sentencing in a U.S. District Court, Judge Ricardo S. Martinez told Turner: “You stole the victims’ money, you stole their hope and dignity for the most base of reasons — money.” The investigation determined more than 1,000 people signed up for dating services from one of the 240 bogus websites. Some paid as much as $1,500 for the services. Turner sent out fake matches to customers, sometimes using the same photo while the identity information was changed to match each client’s geographic location. The payments were sent to UPS stores in different states and then forwarded to a mailbox in Point Roberts.

Carol Berner turned and mouthed “I love you” to her son and sister as she was being led in handcuffs from the courtroom after receiving her sentence last Friday. Berner was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for her role in the 2008 crash that killed fouryear-old Alexa Middelaer and seriously injured her aunt, Daphne Johanson. She was convicted in July of impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm. In handing down his sentence, Surrey Provincial Court Judge Peder Gulbransen said impaired driving causing death is “one of the most serious offences in the Criminal Code.” “The commission of such an offence involves a high level of moral culpability.” Laurel and Michael Middelaer, Alexa’s parents, said while the sentence is around what they expected,

Carol Berner (right) enters Surrey Provincial Court to attend her sentencing hearing. The judge commented on the effect the loss of Alexa has had on the Middelaer family. He likened it to an earthquake or a tsunami and called the loss “profound.” “The grief from the loss of their daughter permeates their very being,” Gulbransen said. He went on to say the case is an example of what can happen when people choose to drink and drive. “I can only hope that
those inside and outside of the courtroom heed the message.” The sentence also carries a five-year driving ban for Berner. Outside the courthouse, Berner’s lawyer, David Tarnow, said he was disappointed by the sentence and was planning on filing an appeal. “I respect his honour, Judge Gulbransen, a great deal. We had a very long
and hard-fought trial,” Tarnow said. “I just think he made several errors in the way he looked at some of the points of law. We’ll be arguing in front of the Court of Appeal eventually that he did make those errors and we’ll see if the Court of Appeal agrees with him or with me.” He also said he will ask the court to release his client on bail pending the results of the appeal.
Berner files appeal to challenge conviction and sentence is launching the appeal on several grounds, including that: her charter rights were violated when she was held in a police vehicle for 30 minutes and when the investigating officer questioned her before warning her of her right to counsel; and the arresting officer did not have reasonable grounds to ask for a breath sample. Berner is asking for an
acquittal, a judicial stay of proceedings or a new trial. Many of the grounds of Berner’s appeal were brought up by the defence during the four-week trial. Tarnow applied for a judicial stay of the charges against his client because, he said, her team was unable to mount a full defence. At trial, he argued the case was hindered by
the fact Berner’s car was destroyed before they had a chance to examine it and a possible witness in the case, the Delta police constable who worked on the reconstruction of the crash, was unable to testify due to medical reasons, which is also mentioned in the application to appeal the conviction. Berner is appealing the 30-month sentence on the
grounds that is was “excessive in all the circumstances.” She is asking for a reduction to a suspended sentence and a term of probation. Berner was convicted of impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm in the
2008 crash that killed fouryear-old Alexa Middelaer and seriously injured her aunt, Daphne Johanson. Berner was driving the car that hit Alexa and Johanson on May 17, 2008 as they fed horses on 64th Street in East Ladner. The little girl died later at B.C. Children’s Hospital. Johanson suffered serious injuries. Jessica Kerr

Celebrating a life well lived Upbeat affair at South Delta Baptist just the way Edgar would have wanted SANDOR GYARMATI
It was a fitting send off for a truly amazing gentleman. Hundreds came out last Friday for a celebration of life at the South Delta Baptist Church for Edgar Clesson Dunning, the beloved journalist and storyteller who passed away suddenly Oct. 23 at the age of 100. The event was a chance to bid a fond farewell to the longtime resident, whose life of accomplishments and contributions enriched the community. Rather than a being a sad, somber affair, the gathering was very much a celebration, filled with laughter and music, the way Dunning would have preferred. Even in his advanced years Dunning, a lifelong learner, was still writing a column for the Delta Optimist, traveling and maintaining an active social schedule. He was born in Elbow, Saskatchewan on Jan. 7, 1910, arriving in Ladner as a 12-year-old when his father started the Optimist. Dunning eventually took over and was editor and publisher for many years. An enduring figure admired by many for his class, humour, warmth and sharp mind, Dunning was actively involved in the Delta community he cherished. While he received numerous awards and adulation, as well as being called an inspiration, the personable newsman was always uncomfortable with praise, quickly pointing out the efforts of others in whatever he was involved in during his well-lived life. He was remembered for many things, including an infectious smile, quick wit and many humorous quips. Calling him a “true renaissance man,” master of ceremonies Rev. Jim Short described Dunning as a man of humility and generosity. Friday’s service had heartfelt reflections from several speakers, including Optimist editor Ted Murphy, Mayor Lois Jackson, MP John Cummins, Dave McMillan of the Kinsmen Club of Ladner/Tsawwassen, MLA Vicki Huntington, Ladner Business Association president Brad Cooper, family friend Gordon Davis and Arla Kostynick of the
McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre. Dunning’s daughter Susan Darlington and granddaughter, Brianna, with family relative Dorothy Neilson, also spoke and led the audience to sing Oh Dear! What Can The Matter Be. Having known him for over 20 years, Murphy noted Dunning was just starting to get used to sending his Rambling column via e-mail, quite an accomplishment for a centenarian. Murphy also recalled how Dunning was a welcome visitor to the office, often providing a “Did I ever tell you when” story. One such tale was from the 1940s when Dunning turned down an offer of land in Tsawwassen from someone who owed the newspaper an outstanding advertising bill. “Edgar was a great newspaper man, but no one would confuse him with George Hodgins,” laughed Murphy.
North wrote that after an Optimist reporter many years ago was sent by Dunning to cover the flooding along the Fraser River and provided a lead paragraph describing the landscape as God having cried, Dunning’s response was, “Forget the flood, interview God!” Saying Dunning will be missed, Kostynick recalled how he would participate at the McKee centre’s sit and fit exercise classes, sometimes deciding to sing. Cooper described Dunning as “a living archive” whose sense of time will be missed but not forgotten. Davis read a letter from journalist Don North, who knew Dunning for many years and described himself as a protégé. North wrote that after an Optimist reporter many years ago was sent by Dunning to cover the flooding along the Fraser River and provided a lead paragraph describing the landscape as God having cried, Dunning’s response was, “Forget the flood, interview God!” Noting Dunning should be remembered for the laughter and the happiness

A celebration of Edgar Dunning’s life was held last Friday afternoon in Tsawwassen. he provided, North also wrote, “Any encounter with Edgar would lift our spirits and often end up lifting spirits too.” North also recalled his letter congratulating Dunning on receiving the Freedom of the Municipality ending up in one of Dunning’s columns in the Optimist. North wrote he was astonished Dunning won the award, thinking he already had one because Dunning acted as if he did. He also wrote, “Old age is no place for sissies and Edgar had shown us youngsters that diligence and wit are not attributes embarked only by the young.” Huntington said Dunning was an irreplaceable man who showed how life should be lived. “Not one bad word did I ever hear about Edgar Dunning or from Edgar ... Whether he was in 19th century costume or his plaid sports jacket, he was a consummate gentleman,” she said. “Edgar left Delta with a legacy of stories and history, but I think what Edgar really wanted to leave us all was an understanding that community happens when people share a path. Edgar made us understand that Delta is a special place because real people built real lives and contributed richly to this place he called home.” Calling him a true pillar of the community, Jackson said Dunning was a humble man, noting he didn’t want the new Delta municipal and museum archives named after him after it had been announced earlier this year.
Cummins said Dunning never acted his age in that he could relate to people no matter how old they were. Neilson provided a couple of stories that described Dunning, saying spending time with him was never dull. Dunning was involved
CHUNG CHOW
with many groups, including the Kinsmen Club of Ladner, the first service club in Delta, which he helped form in 1935. Last year he received Kin Canada’s highest honour by becoming a Hal Rogers Fellow. The Kinsmen flag was
presented to Dunning’s family at Friday’s celebration. A music lover, Dunning was one of the founders of the Delta Community Band Society, the sponsoring organization for the Delta Community Band. At the celebration the band played some tunes Dunning had previously said he’d like hearing at his memorial. Dunning was predeceased by his wife Elsie Maria Bowing (1916-1998). The couple had two children, Susan and Gene, three grandkids and one great grandchild. The archives under construction at the former courthouse won’t bear his name but will have the Edgar Dunning Reading Room. McMillan suggested municipal officials begin considering some new street names, including possibly changing Ladner Trunk Road to Edgar Dunning Boulevard. No doubt Dunning would have had a good chuckle over that one. He was an integral part of Delta’s history and things just won’t be the same without him.

The municipality is getting ready for what could be a busy snow season. Engineering staff outlined to Delta council last week key initiatives undertaken to improve service levels during extreme snowfall. The changes to the snow and ice control policy come as predictions for this coming winter suggest a moderate to strong La Nina, meaning a cold weather pattern and higher than normal snowfall accumulation. An engineering department report notes many lessons were learned as a result of the heavy snowfall experienced during December 2008 and early 2009. Some of the initiatives
already undertaken include fully stocking the works yards with approximately 2,000 metric tonnes of road salt, while an agreement has been secured with Mainroad Contracting Ltd. to guarantee an additional supply of up to 1,440 metric tonnes. The overall supply would be equivalent to the amount used during the extreme winter of 2008/09. New equipment, including a two-tonne dump truck, a civic maintenance vehicle and three plows, were purchased. Delta staff last year created a new emergency response protocol where a direct phone line will link police, fire and ambulance to request site specific snow clearing to provide access to emergency stations. Civic staff members are working with representa-
tives from the Kennedy and McKee senior societies to develop a Snow Angel Program, administered by the societies and supported by Delta. The program assists seniors who need help with driveway and sidewalk snow clearing using community volunteers. To more effectively communicate the current status of a snow or storm condition, a road conditions hotline (604-952-3820) and web page were established last year. The hotline will have a voice message updated every four hours. Businesses are required to clear snow in front of their premises, however, it’s only voluntary for single and multi-family residents. Delta’s snow and ice control budget for 2010 is $205,000.

Chamber tells minister interchanges needed

In a letter to Transportation Minister Shirley Bond earlier this month, chamber chair John Appleby warned the effectiveness of the $1 billion highway could be significantly compromised as soon as it opens if two intersections proceed as planned, one in the Tilbury Industrial Park and another in Sunbury. The chamber says fullscale interchanges are needed at both locations.
CHUNG CHOW
An interchange for the South Fraser Perimeter Road is being constructed near the junction of Highway 17 and Deltaport Way. “The principal issue in this case is the two intersections governed by traffic lights at two key points where full-scale interchanges are required. Anything else will simply cause traffic to be brought to a standstill,” the letter states. It adds that large commercial vehicles, 70-feet or more, need dedicated acceleration and deceleration lanes to allow for safe operation. “Without those features, which require an interchange configuration, the financial and environmental costs of businesses and the
community most certainly will be higher than they could be.” The province announced last month construction had begun on a new interchange on Highway 17 as part of the SFPR project. The province said the interchange, which will connect Deltaport Way and Highway 17 traffic to the new SFPR, would improve mobility, reduce congestion and support economic development in and around Deltaport. The new 40-kilometre, four-lane SFPR will extend from Deltaport Way to Highway 1 in Surrey.
Hats Off headlines busy month for chamber The Delta Chamber of Commerce has a handful of events scheduled for the coming weeks. First up is Friday’s Hats Off to Excellence Awards Gala at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn where the chamber will recognize some of Delta’s outstanding citizens and local businesses. Up for Citizen of the Year are Bev Day, Peter Guichon and Al and Phyllis Wawryk. An After 5 social networking get together is set for Tuesday, Nov. 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mario’s Kitchen in Tsawwassen. It costs $15 or bring a friend for $25. On Tuesday, Dec. 7 the chamber is offering a free BCIT Virtual Business Hub Webinar. The 30-minute session will feature a panel of industry leaders having a roundtable discussion on what will get businesses more traction in the marketplace. The chamber’s annual Christmas luncheon will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at the Riverhouse Restaurant & Pub in Ladner. The business group’s volunteers will be

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW It was a tribute Edgar would have enjoyed. The South Delta Baptist Church was filled with laughter and music — two of Edgar Clesson Dunning’s favourite things — as hundreds gathered to say goodbye to Delta’s beloved centenarian last Friday afternoon. When someone passes it’s such a solemn time it almost seems disrespectful to laugh, but that’s exactly what Edgar would have wanted us to do. When the guy tells the band he’d like to hear it play the songs selected for his celebration of life ahead of time because he might not be able to hear too well at the actual service, it most definitely sets the tone for the occasion. And everyone obliged. Although it was still an emotional time, the laughs and the Edgar-isms provided the levity that had been requested not only by the man of the hour but by his family as well. I did my part by telling a couple of my favourite Edgar stories, including the one about his refusal to accept acreage in Tsawwassen to settle an outstanding advertising bill because all the trees had been cut down on the property. This happened back in the 1940s, I believe, but I still smile every time I remember Edgar recounting the tale and rhetorically asking: “What good would that land have been to me?” He was a true character and I’m glad his celebration of life reflected that fact. I should also mention the Corporation of Delta, which has long had a soft spot for Edgar, was instrumental in organizing the service. Thanks particularly go to the always-affable Judi Stene. I’ve long maintained those of us at the Optimist have been extremely lucky to have had Edgar around for so long. The paper is 88 years old, so to have someone who was here at the beginning has been absolutely remarkable. Edgar would want it clarified that he wasn’t here for that first issue in March of 1922 (the family, including a 12-year-old Edgar, didn’t move from Alberta until the school year had finished), but you get my point that he’s been an invaluable resource for a long, long time. However, that link to the past and all those history lessons he provided wouldn’t mean anywhere near as much if they hadn’t come from such a wonderful man. He set such a great example, not just from a newspaper perspective, but also on how to live your life; how to conduct yourself and how to treat others. He was a true gentleman. I’m going to miss Edgar for a lot of reasons, but none more so than because I’ve lost a dear friend.
Campbell’s botched delivery consistent right to the end DAN SOUTHARD
COMMUNITY COMMENT Hmm, how to sum up Gordon Campbell’s downfall in a few simple words? How ‘bout, bad advice and bad public relations? Ya, that’ll do. Over the past five or six years I’ve become convinced that Campbell’s advisors wake up every morning, have a shower, then spend a few minutes knocking themselves silly with ball-peen hammers. How else can you explain the incredible missteps that have caused Campbell’s policies to often be less criticized than the way in which they were introduced? Even when Campbell cooked up something pleasing for us he would inexplicably garnish it with a dollop of dung. Even Campbell’s resignation was clumsily executed. If you’re going to fall on your sword, then just do it. Don’t lean on it for an inde-
terminate amount of time before allowing the blade to pierce your flesh. Nevertheless, I still contend that even at his worst Campbell was better than Glen Clark at his best. So, can the Liberals bounce back and win the next election? Maybe, but only if the new leader comes from outside the Liberal government, allowing the candidate to distance herself (hopefully) from the HST debacle and simply promise to honour the outcome of the forthcoming referendum. If Liberals choose a leader from within Campbell’s caucus, then their defeat is almost guaranteed, even with Carole James at the helm of the NDP. While Campbell’s demise was inevitable, the timing was surprising, and the same can be said for the now defunct proposed Tsawwassen Area Plan. For me, the plan really fell down when the idea of increasing density around our schools was narrowed to one school, Cliff Drive Elementary. Having watched traffic steadily increase through the Cliff Drive neighbourhood, while other areas received traffic-calming measurements and reduced speed limits, Cliff Drive residents were

clearly in no mood to also absorb the bulk of infill housing for the community. Still, the people who worked on the area plan deserve our appreciation for their efforts. They devoted many hours towards developing a proposal they believed would be good for Tsawwassen. Sure, the noodle they tossed at the wall didn’t stick, but at least they were willing to stand over the hot stove and face the heat. Now for some truly sad news. Tsawwassenites will have noticed the absence of the Skirt Lady over the past months. I’ve been trying to uncover her whereabouts since mid-summer and have recently been told she passed away. I don’t know this to be true for a certainty, but I believe it to be so. I have a soft spot for goodnatured eccentrics such as Skirt Lady (whose real name was Irene Jordan), and have been trying to think of a suitable way to honour her memory. Maybe a day, perhaps the first day of winter, in which Tsawwassenites don their skirts, shorts or even long sweaters, and walk from 7-11 to Tim Hortons. It would be a small, but visible, tribute to a unique person who made our town a more colourful place.

Letters to the Editor
More needed than cameras Editor: Re: Nab red light runners with camera, Nov. 3 I couldn’t agree more with installing a red light camera at the intersection of Highway 10 and Ladner Trunk Road. I see motorists running the light almost every day. I wish red light cameras would be installed at many more intersections. The fine goes to the registered owner and he or she can fight the battle with whoever drove the vehicle. In addition, I support much higher fines for those who run a light and get pulled over. Running a red light is dangerous and irresponsible. This being said, I think a major cause of motor-
ists running red lights is the inefficient and, frankly, maddening absence of “green waves” that would work at the speed limit and improve traffic flow. 56th Street in Tsawwassen is a prime example of light after light working opposite. Gridlock, a huge carbon footprint and irritated, fuming motorists speeding up to try “catch” the light and then going through a red light is, in many cases, the result. It is the same all over Vancouver and hopelessly inefficient and dangerous. Surely a lot of this can be improved, even if it means pedestrians have to wait for the light to change. Now, can we next address all those folks that
hog along in the passing — left— lane at 70 km/h holding up traffic and turning the right lane into the passing lane? Oh, I almost forgot about the single motorists using the HOV lane while the rest of us are busy abiding with the traffic laws and calling the office on our newly acquired blue tooth gizmos. Then there are the tailgaters and the idiot kids using the roads as their personal racetrack. The list goes on. It is concerning to see the lack of skill in so many motorists and some of the maddening inefficiencies of our traffic systems. I feel sorry for the police trying to keep up with it all. Hans Verbeek
Council congratulated for shelving Tsawwassen plan do it at the expense of the quality of life of too many of us. I know council can come up with a better plan that won’t destroy current single-family areas and won’t encourage more people to live under the power lines. The thing council did get right was to leave the
Southlands zoned agricultural. In this case, it listened to the majority. There were calls to return this area to the ALR. I would urge council to do just that and put this divisive issue to rest. This could be council’s legacy. Agnes Jackson
Remembrance Day musical moment moves neighbour Editor: I am a shift worker and was disappointed to find out that I was scheduled to work graveyard shifts over Remembrance Day. I have always participated in Remembrance Day ceremonies in some form or another, including marching
in Ladner. Having worked through the night until the morning of Nov. 11, I fought to stay awake until 11 a.m. to pay my respects. At 11 a.m., I went out on my back deck and bowed my head. To my surprise, and as clear as could be, I heard
the Taps bugle call. I don’t know who the bugler was or where it was coming from, but I have to say I was very impressed. I would like to thank my neighbour for sharing that moment with me and our neighbourhood. S. Bruce Redmond
Tribute to ‘Rambling’ comes in the form of a limerick
Editor: Each time I pick up the Optimist, it reminds me of how much we will miss the “Ramblings” of Edgar Dunning. Reading the accounts of his life makes me wonder
when the movie will come out. For myself, I can’t think of Edgar without thinking about his limericks, so I sat down and wrote a few. Here’s one: There once was an Edgar
named Dunning, Whose Ramblings in the paper were cunning, A limerick a day, Seemed to be his way, And we certainly wish he was still running. Ian Kent

Change is inevitable, so issue is whether it’s done properly
The Municipal Council of The Corporation of Delta will hold a Public Hearing, in accordance with the Local Government Act, to consider the following proposed projects and related applications: Date: Time: Place:
Tuesday, November 23, 2010 7:00 pm Council Chamber Delta Municipal Hall 4500 Clarence Taylor Crescent Delta, BC V4K 3E2
Editor: Re: Council finally realizes that change not welcomed in Tsawwassen, letter to the editor, Nov. 10 R. Smith says he and some of his friends are happy with Tsawwassen remaining the “way it is” and they don’t want further change. Unfortunately for this shortsighted perspective, Tsawwassen will certainly change. The issue and the opportunity is whether that change will be managed and planned or whether it will happen haphazardly and result in circumstances that may be difficult to accept.
A Council meeting is scheduled to immediately follow this Public Hearing in the event Council wishes to give further consideration to any projects at that time. Addtional Information Additional information, copies of the bylaws, supporting staff reports, and any relevant background documentation may be inspected until Tuesday, November 23, 2010. It’s important, as well, to recognize that Tsawwassen’s plans are not just Tsawwassen’s plans. Tsawwassen is one part of Delta — a much larger community than just the sunny enclave on the border with the U.S. Middle and North Delta — if you face north and look to the right — are around and will probably want to have a say in what happens down there, particularly seeing as they help to pay for it. And then, of course, Delta is only one small part of the Lower Mainland, and we could go on, couldn’t we? Firth Bateman

Opinion
I have been trying to put words to paper about the Basi-Virk case. It isn’t easy. How does an elected representative write responsibly about such disdain for the people; such lack of respect for democracy; and such a complete collapse of ethics? It is a drama that has sullied the very name of justice and which has dragged prosecutors and courts into a smelly, dirty mess. Even more unsettling is the realization that Basi and Virk are unsavoury fall guys in a sorry story of insider privilege. It’s a story of bribes, money laundering; illegal bidding processes; friends in high places; powerful people; lies to the public; arms length go-betweens; secret meetings; leaked confidential documents;

sition and the electorate cannot affect government decisions, then we have only one hope left — the party caucus ... the elected members of the legislature that are supposed to be representing the people. But can a caucus overcome the virulent virus that forces members to be loyal to the party and not to the people? At some point in our lives, most of us have faced moments of decision: Do we do what is right or do we do what is convenient? Do we risk favour, or do we curry it? Do we stand on our own two feet, or do we hide in the crowd? Do we protect power, or do we curb it? These are tough decisions that have consequences. A caucus has power if it has the will ... and it is time the government caucus examines the principles of democracy; listen to its conscience; hear the people of this province; and exercise a deliberate will to curb power and give it back to the people.

big, big money. And when the story gets too close to friends in high places, a sudden settlement puts it all to bed and the “criminals” go home to limited house arrest and solvency ... rescued by the very taxpayers who were prosecuting them in the first place. And the icing on the cake (for me, at least) is a legal system that can charge and fine a company for bribery and let its principals go scot free: after all, that nasty little company came up with the idea and initiated the dirty deed all by itself. It is a legal nicety that brings justice into disrepute. The whole sordid mess has brought justice into disrepute. Are you as disturbed and worried as I am? The congregation of Ladner United Church is busy once again preparing for its annual Christmas Village Bazaar. Being a “heart for God in the Heart of the Village” is very important and the church wants to invite everyone, young and old, to come and experience the music (there will be travelling carollers), laughter and fellowship. As in every bazaar, the baking and sweets are usually the first stop but there is also a table full of crafts and local artists’ cards. The “Kids Zone” returns with games, small crafts and
items to buy. There is much more to explore after one has had a hearty lunch of homemade soup, tried your luck at the bottle mania game and checked out any treasures in the Collectables. The last stop is the silent auction where local businesses have donated items to be auctioned off as well as the “baskets” that have become a highlight. There are so many interesting items that you may need to wander around a few times. The bazaar runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27. Ladner United is at 4960-48th Ave.

An bars for her role in the crash that killed Alexa Middelaer and injured appeal is planned. The Optimist asked: Daphne Johanson in 2008. She was convicted of impaired driving
What do you think of the sentence?
Geoff Heith Two years is nothing. Especially for people who drink and drive regularly, it shows them they can get off pretty scot-free.
Peter Davis Number one, I think the sentence is probably appropriate. Number two, I think the drinking and driving laws, the new laws, are not good. The old laws were good enough if enforced properly.
You can have your say on this issue by taking part in our web poll at www. delta-optimist.com
Patrick Lanchester Probably not enough.
Scott Alexander I think the sentence was appropriate to the public response, and with the pressure the courts had on them to go as close as they can to the maximum. It was an unfortunate accident.
Warren Willis I think it’s a little heavy. My wife disagrees with me.

Seafair captures Tim Jardine Showcase Islanders overcome slow start and cap their tournament run with easy win over Surrey in championship game BY
MARK BOOTH
mbooth@delta-optimist.com
The Seafair Islanders swear they weren’t playing possum during the early stages of the 17th annual Tim Jardine Bantam Showcase. After somewhat sputtering out of the gate, the favoured Islanders cranked up their game when it mattered the most to capture the eight-team rep tournament hosted last week by the South Delta Minor Hockey Association. The Islanders had opened the event on Remembrance Day by tying Surrey 4-4 and dropping a 3-2 decision to the host South Delta Storm. In past years, that likely would have been enough to keep them out of the semi-finals — with only the top two teams from each round-robin group advancing. However, this edition adapted a different format that saw all eight participants advance to a quarter-final playoff round. Seafair blasted Mission 8-2 on Saturday then slipped past Langley, 5-4, in the semi-finals Sunday morning. The Richmond squad completed the run with an 8-2 romp over the same Surrey team it tied three days earlier. Islanders coach Russ Weber insists his team didn’t do anything
differently in the medal round or take it for granted that a playoff berth was guaranteed. “From our perspective, we approached every game the same and didn’t perceive anything,” said Weber, who has now won this tournament three times after earlier guiding a pair of Richmond Minor teams. “This format is maybe new to South Delta but it’s not new to tournaments. I think it’s more user friendly and does a better job of making sure the best two teams are in the final rather than being penalized for one bad game.” Despite a talented line-up that is considered a provincial contender, the Islanders are still working at establishing themselves as an elite A1 team. They went unbeaten in the second flight of Pacific Coast Amateur tiering play which earned them a promotion to flight one for the regular season. That will mean a steady diet of perennial powerhouses such as Burnaby and North Shore Winter Clubs. The host Storm saw their tournament title hopes end with a tight 2-1 loss to Semiahmoo in the quarter-finals. The locals also managed to play Surrey to a 2-2 draw in their final round-robin game — meaning they went unbeaten against the two finalists.

Sun Devils delighted to enter playoffs as underdogs will have a very good shot at it.” What does has Moon somewhat concerned is his team coming off a two week layoff after Langley forfeited their final exhibition game. It was all too familiar to what happened a year ago when the Devils saw two games removed from their schedule then entered the playoffs with little in the way of momentum. However, the team has enjoyed some solid practice sessions at the Winskill turf and the players are focused on the task at hand, with many of them taking in Handworth’s 44-0 opening round win over Nechako Valley last Friday. What they saw was the Royals’ balanced attack, led by running back Victory Sun and quarterback Stephen Cyr who tossed four touchdown passes. “He has good wheels and can be elusive,” said Moon of Sung. “They also have a good

As long as they can dust off the rust in time, the South Delta Sun Devils like their position heading into their Friday afternoon provincial quarter-final date with the Handsworth Royals. Despite riding a four-game win streak into the post-season and earning an opening round bye, the Sun Devils are underdogs against their fourth ranked North Shore opponent that plays in what is considered the tougher of the two Lower Mainland conferences. That’s just fine with head coach Ray Moon. “This is the position we want to be in,” he chuckled. “We don’t mind lying in the weeds at all. We think we match up well with them and if we can control the trenches then we

deep threat and their tight end is another weapon. “Our first priority, though, is containing their running game.” The layoff has provided enough time for senior Ray Calderwood’s status to be probable for Friday’s game after suffering a knee injury last month against Sands. “He’s done everything short of surgery to be able to play,” added Moon. “He is one of our top senior players and just his presence is a going to be an emotional lift. Our senior class is a great group of kids and the heart and soul of this team. Our Grade 11 and 10 players really look up to them.” The game will take place Friday at UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium with kickoff slated for 3 p.m. The initial plan was to stage all rounds of the playoffs at the temporary Empire Stadium but cost factors led to a different venue.

X-treme capture Surrey tournament
NOTHING CAN STOP ME
The Ladner X-treme U10 girls soccer team went undefeated to capture its division at the Surrey Breakers’ Seventh Annual Remembrance Day Tournament. Ladner opened play against an unknown tier team from Port Coquitlam and it didn’t take long for striker Dannica Desgroseilliers to put her team on the board. That seemed to open the floodgates for the X-treme, which consists of players from two U10 House teams, as they cruised to a 4-0 win. In the afternoon, they played a gritty team from Guildford. The first half was a nail biter and there were plenty of scoring for the Ladner girls but they had a hard time finding the back of the net. A halftime pep talk from coach James Mercredi, seemed to turn things around as his girls exploded for four goals in just 12-minutes. The game was capped off by an outstanding indirect free kick by Taylor Mercredi and Christy-Anna Chung which completely caught Guildford off-guard to cap a 5-0 win. Ladner knew it faced a stiff challenge against the Surdel Thunder
Ladner X-treme won three straight games at the Surrey Breakers tourney. who entered the tournament having not lost this season. The locals came ready to play and only a couple of phenomenal saves by the Surdel goalkeeper
prevented Amrita Bains and Hanna Hansen from opening the scoring. In the second half, the Thunder’s keeper and best player came out and played forward. Within five
minutes, her team generated a number of scoring chances. Fine defending from Rebecca Fraser, Brianne Rennie, Taylor Mercredi and Teah Bryce shut down the Thunder’s biggest threat and took the advantage away from an aggressive Surdel team. The X-Treme managed about four shots on net, throughout the half, but was unable to put the ball over the goal line. That was until about three minutes left when Taylor Mercredi bombed a goal kick past the entire Surdel team and managed to find a gap between defenders. The ball found Desgroseilliers who dribble down the wing and managed a rocket of a shot that went straight into the opposite side of the net, to secure a 1-0 victory. The Ladner girls fought hard to go undefeated and considering this is their first time playing together, they managed an outcome that could not have been scripted any better. The X-treme also features Jaileen McCormick and Sophia Janzen. Absent were Gabrielle O’Brien and Ginnie Stefenelli.
Ice Hawks produce thrilling win over northern rivals It took one of the more thrilling finishes in franchise history for the Delta Ice Hawks to remain the top team in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League. Mark Whiteley and Liam Harding each scored in the final minute of the third period and Cody Fidgett tallied in overtime as the Ice Hawks
roared back for a 6-5 win over the North Delta Devils on Saturday night at Sungod Arena. The team’s perfect record under new head coach Dave McLellan looked to be in serious jeopardy when the Devils jumped out to a 4-0 first period lead. However, the Ice Hawks chipped away at the large
deficit and pulled within one on Kye Benjaminsen’s goal. The Devils pushed the lead to 5-3 with a third period power play tally and looked to be on the verge of victory until the Hawks’ last minute heroics. Whiteley scored with 50 seconds remaining and Harding notched the tying goal with 19 sec-
onds left. He then set-up Fidgett’s game winner at the 2:10 mark of overtime. Harding finished with four points and now leads the league in scoring with 41 points in 20 games. Spencer Traher had the other Delta goal. The locals were coming off an 7-2 road win over the Abbotsford Pilots.

Millicent was born in Vernon, BC and moved to Duncan, BC where she attended Queen Margaret’s School for Girls. Her father Harry Fox was owner of Fox’s Dry Goods in Duncan for many years. After graduating from school, Millicent attended the Vancouver School of Art, studying sculpture. Millicent continued her love of sculpture all her life and was active in the art world right up to her passing. Millicent married Jim Harrison, in Victoria, BC and later moved to Ottawa with her children in 1956, where she continued her art career, doing many sculptures and portraits for private collections and commissions – Museum of Man, Newfoundland Museum, Discovery Train, Bank of Canada Money Museum, Post Office Museum, Department of Labor. She also taught at the High School of Commerce and St. Lawrence College. Her private collections included works for the Ron Southern family of Spruce Meadows, Calgary; Prime Minister Diefenbaker’s grandchildren; Margaret Trudeau; Terry Fox and many others. Millicent moved back to Vancouver Island, with her husband in 1977, where they owned and operated the Dutch Latch restaurant on the Malahat Hwy. She continued her art career in Vancouver and taught sculpture at the Silk Purse Art Studio in West Vancouver, for 5 years. She moved to Tsawwassen in 2001 to live with her daughter Janet, continuing to teach and exhibiting her works. She will be remembered for her love and kindness by friends and family as well as her positive and energetic outlook on life. A memorial celebration of Millicent’s life will be held at St. David’s Anglican Church, 1115 - 51A Street, Delta BC (Tsawwassen) on Sunday, November 14, 2010, at 2:00 PM. (Refreshments to follow in Church Hall). www.stdavidsdelta.com
