For just a few moments this week the packed courtroom at the Carol Berner sentencing hearing got to see what the Middelaer family has lost. On Monday afternoon, Michael Middelaer, Alexa’s father, showed a short home movie as part of his victim impact statement and there on a large screen the little blond girl, who many have only known in death, was alive again and singing carols with her class in what was to be her last Christmas concert. Michael Middelaer touched his hand to his heart and paused for a moment before continuing with his statement. It was one of six read out by the family. Many in the Surrey courtroom were reduced to tears as the statements were read. Berner, who was convicted in July for her role in the May 17, 2008 crash in East Ladner that killed four-year-old Alexa Middelaer and injured her aunt, Daphne Johanson, was to be sentenced Monday, but that has now been delayed until Friday. Laurel Middelaer told a packed courtroom that she feels an ache in her womb at the loss of her daughter. She said she is still haunted by what she witnessed that day and talked about how she and her family have been damaged. “God, do I miss her. But I live each day by choice. I have to,” Laurel said. “Now we are merely shells of what we were before.” She also read out a statement from Christian Middelaer, Alexa’s 10-year-old brother. In a statement directed to Judge Peder Gulbransen, he said: “This has to stop. It is not right. Why is

“If there was anything I could do or say to take away your pain, I would,” Berner said through tears. “All I can do is take responsibility for my actions.”
She said she would never get behind the wheel again, has stopped drinking and found God. See BERNER page 3

Ladner woman’s battle with flesh-eating disease featured on tonight’s episode of TLC’s Untold Stories of the ER BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
An amazing life and death battle that began at Delta Hospital will be featured in an American TV medical documentary tonight. The Learning Channel series Untold Stories of the ER will air the episode “Life and Limb” featuring the story of Ladner’s Lana Idestrup. Idestrup was six months pregnant in December 2007 when she arrived at the ER with extreme pain in her ankle. Thanks to a good hunch and quick thinking by the medical team taking care of her, an early diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis, commonly known as flesh-eating disease, saved Idestrup from losing a limb and her unborn baby. “They only had a 48-hour window. With their suspicion I was very fortunate that they were able to figure out what was going on with me,” Idestrup told the Optimist prior to the airing of the show. Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare infection of the deeper layers of skin and tissue. In the early stages, signs of inflammation may not be apparent if the bacteria are deep within the tissue. If they are not deep, signs of inflammation such as redness and swollen or hot skin show quickly. “I couldn’t even put pressure on it. Of course, you show up, you’re pregnant and you don’t know what’s safe for the baby and what’s not safe for the baby. My fever was up and I was still feeling pain through the

BERNER from page 1 There was a brief delay in the proceedings when, after finishing her statement, Berner appeared to have a severe panic attack. The courtroom was cleared while Berner was attended to and after some time, she was led from the courtroom by a supporter. Once court resumed in her absence, Berner’s lawyer, David Tarnow, told the judge his client, who was described by several character witnesses, two of which testified in court, as a kind, loving and strong single mother who would never hurt anyone on purpose and has overcome much hardship in her life, should not go to jail. “What we hear in the
courtroom is that there should be restraint,” he said. “Not everyone has to go to jail ... there has to be restraint ... this lady should not be going to jail.” Tarnow has asked for a suspended sentence that could be served in the community. “I ask your honour to not incarcerate but craft the sentence in a way she could give back,” he said. The Crown is seeking a three- to five-year jail term, citing Berner’s deliberate decisions to drive after drinking and to speed, and the gravity of the consequences of those decisions warrant the sentence. “She is the sole cause of the collision, with devastat-
ing results,” said Crown prosecutor Kim Wendel. The Crown is also seeking a five- to seven-year driving ban. Berner was convicted of impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm as a result of the 2008 crash. Alexa and her aunt had been feeding a horse in the 4300-block of 64th Street in East Ladner when a car driven by Berner plowed into them. The little girl was fatally wounded and died later at B.C. Children’s Hospital. Johanson underwent extensive surgery and spent four weeks in hospital. • Visit www.delta-optimist.com for the latest.
endured reminded Sinclair of a similar case the nurse dealt with two decades earlier when a man developed the disease after pricking his finger on a thorn bush. “One of the things is that it’s an infection to the skin that’s extremely painful, that’s why I recognized it with her. The pain level didn’t match what it looked like on the skin at that point,” she said. “There’s nothing we could prove until we had blood cultures back. All we knew for sure is that she went into septic shock and needed a higher level of care. If someone goes into sepsis who’s pregnant there’s a high risk they’ll go into premature labour.” The Idestrup family has been back to meet with care team members at Delta Hospital to thank them for helping to save Lana’s life and that of her daughter. “Lana and Jon and the baby came back to say hi to us and show us the result and we were just in tears. We couldn’t believe what a good news story it was,” said Sinclair. The TLC show has mostly actors playing the parts of doctors and patients in real life stories, but Sinclair, who acted as a technical advisor for the episode, plays herself. Holly is now almost three. Idestrup has two other children, Adam, 21, and Justin, 7. Her story is the TLC show’s first foray into the Canadian health care system. Untold Stories of the ER is scheduled to air at 9 p.m. on Delta Cable Channel 47.

Developers not behind area plan: council Civic politicians say there were no discussions prior to proposal to increase density in certain neighbourhoods BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Delta never had discussions with developers about potential changes to resi-
dential neighbourhoods during Tsawwassen Area Plan deliberations. That was the message reiterated by several councillors during their regular
weekly meeting Monday at municipal hall. As expected, Delta council approved a recommendation to abandon the proposed area plan bylaw, due to the overwhelmingly negative reaction at last week’s public hearing. The main bone of contention was a proposal to redesignate several neighbourhoods just north of the town centre to allow for townhouse development. The homes along the power lines corridor
would have also had a new designation for higher density development, although developers would still have to go through the regular rezoning process. Coun. Bruce McDonald, who chaired the area plan committee, said civic officials never discussed burying the power lines with anyone at any point during the area plan process, contrary to claims raised by several residents at the public hearing.
“There’s been some interesting newspaper articles recently. I want to assure council and the public that the committee never, at any time, discussed with any developer burying hydro lines. In fact, the committee never discussed burying hydro lines among itself,” said McDonald. “Every single meeting that we had, every single one, was public and every single one had people observing. We never dis-
cussed hydro lines and never discussed changes of value for properties were they to be redesignated.” Mayor Lois Jackson said it’s also unfortunate council is being made to be on the defensive because of anonymous e-mails containing rumours and innuendo by “some very malicious people.” Delta CAO George Harvie will come back with a new area plan next year for council’s consideration.

The municipality is continuing to work with a River Road property owner to address concerns around public access to the dike. Many local residents were upset last month after a fence appeared blocking a portion of the dike near 46A Avenue and River Road West in Ladner. Several locals who regularly walk, run or cycle along the dike contacted the Optimist expressing con-
cern about the fence. The situation escalated recently when, after someone cut through the fence, the property owner replaced the fence with a shipping container. There are several properties, both residential and commercial, that span the dike between the water and River Road West. Tom Leathem, Delta’s director of community planning and development, said last month the property lines of those lots do extend from the water all the way to the
road, including the dike. The property owner is well within his rights to put up a fence on his property. Under an agreement with Delta, the property owners must maintain a right-ofway with access points for the municipality to ensure dike and drainage management work can be carried out. However, nothing in the agreement makes allowances for public access. Steven Lan, Delta’s director of engineering, said the property owner, as many others along the dike, has
allowed public access for many years but recently decided to put up the fence due to ongoing vandalism and unsavoury activities taking place near the property. Lan added that while the property owner can block access through his property with a fence, the shipping container cannot remain at the site. “We’re hoping to find a resolution that addresses the property owner’s concerns as well as allows public access,” he said.

ning were on the minds of many as Huntington fielded several questions about Metro Vancouver’s regional growth strategy and the plan for Tsawwassen First Nation reserve. While Huntington did not comment on the TFN’s specific proposals, she did say she is disappointed with the plan to build out the area. Huntington also used the meeting to get feedback on how she should be communicating with constituents. A few ideas were floated, including increased use of social media, a newsletter, columns in the local papers and more town hall meetings. “I think it went very well,” Huntington said after the meeting, adding she was pleased with the turnout and the variety of questions.

“They are not going to stop building that road,” she said. “They are adamant.” Talk also turned to the HST. When asked why the government can’t just make the change now instead of going through the referendum, Huntington said the problem is the province signed a five-year deal with the federal government that would leave Victoria with a $1.6 billion bill from Ottawa. The contentious Tsawwassen Area Plan and the Southlands also came up. One questioner asked if the Southlands could be returned to the Agricultural Land Reserve. Huntington replied that it could, but that would have to be initiated by the municipality. Development and plan-

A wide variety of topics were covered Monday night at Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington’s first-ever town hall meeting. More than 100 people came out to the forum, sponsored by her constituency association, at the Tsawwassen Longhouse to hear from and question the first-term independent MLA. “I think we’ll have an interesting discussion,” Huntington said at the outset, adding she wants direction from constituents on what issues she should be championing and how best to communicate with the community. She shared some information and thoughts with the crowd, including several insights into how things work in Victoria and how she navigates the largely uncharted territory of an independent MLA. Huntington also touched on Gordon Campbell’s recent resignation, telling the crowd she feels it’s improper for the premier to continue in the position following his announcement. She said an interim leader would be the proper course of action. Following that, the floor was opened to questions and comments, with one constituent asking about the chances of halting construction of the South Fraser Perimeter Road. Huntington replied that she has brought the issue up on several occasions and while ministers and government staff are willing to answer questions, a change of plan is a non-starter.
A celebration of Edgar Dunning’s life will be held this Friday at the South Delta Baptist Church in Tsawwassen at 1:30 p.m. Dunning, a respected journalist and noted historian, died Oct. 23. He was

Students Catherine Anderson (left) and Gabrielle Rushton paid tribute to Shelley Davidson at a school assembly after the Pebble Hill teacher received a Heritage National Excellence Award for Teaching. She has been teaching in Delta for 30 years.
School, has been selected as a recipient of a Heritage National Excellence Award for Teaching. Offered by Heritage Education Funds, a Canadian RESP company, these awards recognize five outstanding educators in Canada each year. Davidson was selected as this year’s Western Canada recipient. An assembly was held late last month where Scott McIndless, CEO of Heritage Funds, presented Davidson with a plaque and a cheque for $5,000. Ragini Kapil, former Pebble Hill principal and nominator, said, “Shelley creates a warm, caring
atmosphere within which students feel comfortable to learn and express themselves. Shelley also plays a significant role as a literacy coach in the district and for our school.” Davidson has lived in Delta for over 50 years and has been teaching in Delta for 30 years. “When I was in Grade 1 I wanted to be a teacher in Delta and my dream came true,” Davidson said. “It is a privilege and an honour to receive this award. I love coming to school every day and working with the wonderful students, staff and parents of Pebble Hill Traditional.”
Name: Halia Age: 4 Occupation: Kindergarten student What is the activity? Swim lessons Where & when does it take place? Wednesdays and Fridays at Sungod Recreation Centre pool. How often do you participate? Twice a week How long have you been involved? Since I was nine months old. Why did you get involved in this activity? My mommy said if I wanted to swim with dolphins, I would have to learn to swim first. (Halia hasn’t been swimming with dolphins yet, but it is on her ‘to do’ list.). What do you like best about this activity? I like pretending to be a mermaid and I like the great teachers. How does it benefit your life? My mommy says it is an important life skill but I just think it is so much fun . What other things do you do to keep active? I dance, skate and play the violin. Did you know that Delta aquatic facilities offer private or semi-private lessons? These are great if your child (or you) needs extra help or learns best one on one. As well, if your child has advanced to a skill level where they need to pause while they wait to catch up to age categories, private lessons can help maintain skills and endurance and teach new ways of enjoying the water. Swim lessons for people of all ages are available at Sungod Recreation Centre, Ladner Leisure Centre and Winskill Aquatic & Fitness Centre. Red Nose volunteers expect to be even busier this holiday season Stricter drinking driving laws to increase demand for seasonal service DAVE WILLIS
It’s looking like this holiday season will be a very busy one for Operation Red Nose. A kick-off event was held Monday in Ladner for the safe driving service that begins operation later this month. It’s expected demand for Operation Red Nose will be higher than ever this year now the province has implemented stricter drunk driving rules. Operation Red Nose coordinator Carlene Lewall said over 300 volunteers took part last year and she expects more will be needed this time around. While drinking and driv-
ing can have tragic results, those incidents can be easily prevented, said ICBC road safety co-ordinator Jacqueline Tokaryk. ICBC is a provincial sponsor of the Operation Red Nose program. During evenings when the program is in service volunteers will drive people and their vehicles home for a donation. Stats from last year show nearly 500 rides were given in Delta/ Richmond. Locally the Delta Gymnastics Society hosts the national program. Proceeds will go to the Delta Sports Development Centre in Ladner, the society’s new home. Lewall noted the centre is on schedule to open in March.

This year Operation Red Nose, in partnership with ICBC, CTV, Richmond RCMP, Delta police and local sponsors, will service the communities of Delta and Richmond on Nov. 26 and 27 and Dec. 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18 and 31 between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. Visit www.operationrednosedelta.com for more information. TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW Town planning in a community that’s essentially built out comes with inherent challenges, but even recognizing those obstacles it’s still hard to overlook the debacle that has unfolded in Tsawwassen. Civic politicians abandoned (Delta’s word, not mine) the area plan bylaw last week after residents came out in force to voice their opposition during a public hearing at the South Delta Recreation Centre. To be fair, the vast majority of the unrest came as a result of one specific component of the plan, namely the idea to transform existing single-family neighbourhoods into higher density zones. What’s more, abandon is probably too strong a word as much of the work done to date is perfectly acceptable and it’s only certain parts that have to be amended. Having recognized all that, it’s still curious, and not in a good way, how a plan that was 18 months in the making, and featured two series of public consultation meetings, can go so wrong at the hearing stage. In most instances, a hearing is the first opportunity for councillors to get public feedback, but given all the time and money expended on area plan consultations prior to last week, you’d think those over at municipal hall would have already had a pretty good idea of where Tsawwassenites stood on the issues. At least they should have, yet they floated a proposal that completely bombed. If this was the first, shall we say, hiccup along the way it could be written off as an anomaly, but it’s just the latest of many moves to draw the ire of the public. To be fair, again, updating an area plan in Tsawwassen was most definitely going to be a contentious undertaking no matter what, but I don’t think it’s a stretch to say the way it’s been handled has thrown fuel on that fire. Whether the problem stems from the process Delta is using or the advice politicians are getting is up for debate, I suppose, but to have this one go off the rails suggests something needs to change going forward. The bottom line is that civic staff and politicians, along with a citizen committee and the wider public, spent 18 months putting together a blueprint for Tsawwassen’s future, yet the end result somehow missed the mark. I’m not looking to hang this failure on anyone in particular, but I do think it has to serve as a wake up call that the current method of public consultation isn’t working. Given all that has gone on in the last year-and-a-half, we should have got more bang for our buck.
It’s not first time Indian city has found a Canadian twin SYLVIA BISHOP
COMMUNITY COMMENT Does anyone else wonder why a $65,000 junket to Mangalore, India, paid for by taxpayers, ranks as important during a time when Delta really needs its mayor at home? It just seems frivolous. Ever fair, I called Hamilton, Ontario, which twinned with Mangalore years ago, to find out how it benefited. More on that later. Even before the mayor returned to Delta, Indian news provided a lot of coverage. The rock star reception in the heat of Mangalore must be a wistful memory after the less than rock star, but oh so heated, Tsawwassen Area Plan public hearing reception here. But I digress. Indian news reported meetings and receptions with enthusiasm, even though reports seemed similar. They must have used the
same press releases for information. Characterized as an effort to strengthen economic ties, there was a lot of excitement surrounding the visit, and some skepticism. In the memorandum of understanding signed by both corporations — why aren’t we called cities — they “agreed to collaborate to promote and facilitate cooperation and exchanges between members of the business community....” Sounds vague to me, as it did to one of the councillors of Mangalore. She cited the signing of a similar agreement with Hamilton and could not recall how it helped. Business? Mangalore’s economy has a strong IT sector, agriculture processing and port-related activities. Chemicals and fertilizers, an iron ore company and an oil refinery round out the major enterprises. Are we going to in-source the IT services we’ve been outsourcing? And apparently, for Delta business people interested in checking out the possibilities in Mangalore, you have to go on your on dime on your own time. Airfare is not cheap. Round trip via Hong Kong or Frankfurt puts you back $5,000 and a day-and-a-half of travel, according to Expedia.

Could it be the location? It is true both cities are on the water and have sea and air ports nearby, but I think it was over the top to report Delta’s “palm fringed beaches” as the mayor did in one news report. Mangalore is in a tropical monsoon climate. Delta enjoys a temperate climate. Seaports? Mangalore lies on the west coast of India, so if business wants to ship products, it’s got to navigate Africa’s Cape, Atlantic Ocean and come through the Panama Canal and/or truck across the United States. A city on the east coast of India would navigate the Pacific Ocean shipping lanes. Is it our diversity? People from all over the world call Delta home. Many of them are from India. Most of those speak Punjabi, a language that’s not spoken much in Mangalore’s state of Karnataka. Odd to pick a city to twin with that doesn’t speak the language of the majority of our Indian residents. And Hamilton, Ontario? It took a different approach. It based twinning less on business and more on building a community of world citizens in recognition of the diversity in Hamilton’s community. Peace was one of the guiding principles. Interesting.

Tsawwassenites oppose poor plan, but not development as a whole
Editor: Re: People all over, including right here, want political leadership, Community Comment, Nov. 6 I must admit Mike Schneider has me a little confused. I have read his Community Comment articles with interest, but it seems to me he has completely missed the point to the recent hearing in regards to the proposed Tsawwassen Area Plan. He talks of local politicians bowing to public pressure and scrapping an 18month planning process so no one would get hurt and greedy developers wouldn’t get their way. He also insults another councillor for not having her eyes open in regards to the problem of irrigation on the Southlands. Lastly, he grumbles about
no new development on the Southlands and no new housing designations in Tsawwassen. Was he even at the same hearing as I was? I don’t think I heard anyone say no to new development in Tsawwassen. What I heard was a community standing up and saying no to a poorly conceived plan that redefined the Tsawwassen core that would eventually consume more than 500 households in already existing single-family neighbourhoods. I would ask him, what point is there in an 18month planning process that doesn’t take the opinions of the people affected into account? I heard from many people that had no issues with a thoroughly intelligent plan that would add capacity without the destruction
of an existing community. I also heard nearly all say they would appreciate having an ability to express their opinions on this subject without partisan politics and slanted public opinion polls that are worded in such a way as to deceive the respondents into obtaining the answers they desire. Most of all what I heard was this community needs to know above all that a proposed development has not been conceived through collusion and behind closed doors. Most importantly, what I saw was a mayor who man-
aged a public hearing under extremely difficult circumstances and recognized the fact the people were not happy with the proposal as it was presented and sent it back for revision. Schneider has made his pro-development views exceedingly clear in the past, but just because some do not agree with his vision of Tsawwassen does not mean our community will stagnate and die. Tsawwassen will grow and with good planning it will flourish and still be the place we all love to live in. Mark Rudge
North Deltan not ready to buck up for Southlands
Editor: Re: Get everyone together to buy Southlands, letter to the editor, Nov. 6 The idea that “all of Delta” might accept a “five-year $100 levy” to assist with the public purchase of part of the Southlands property is a non-starter for this resident of Delta — North Delta, to be exact. In case you aren’t familiar with the nether regions of the community, “North Delta” is that part of Delta way off in the boonies that generates the larger share
of the municipal cash flow, but which also apparently — and allegedly — evidences a variety of characteristics (crime, housing stock, general and overall appearance, etc.) that some residents in some of the other parts of Delta prefer to distance themselves from — at least if comments emanating from the recent Tsawwassen area planning process are to be believed. It’s (the public purchase of the Southlands) an illadvised idea at this stage of community discussion, in any event. Firth Bateman
Council finally realizes that change not welcomed in Tsawwassen
Editor: It is indeed refreshing to hear the mayor and the rest of Delta council have finally realized the vast majority of Tsawwassen residents do not wish any further development or change. We are happy the way it is. It is unfortunate council didn’t realize this before it approved that huge monstrosity at Tsawwassen Springs. R. Smith

When completed, this plan will provide advice to municipal staff for stormwater management in the Boundary and Shaw Creek watersheds to allow for improvements to the overall watershed system. The issues being examined include flood risk and mitigation, preserving and improving aquatic and riparian habitats and developing effective and affordable watercourse improvement programs. The information gathered at this public meeting will be used in the plan development and to evaluate alternatives.

Editor: Home improvements are nice for the person receiving them. They are annoying, however, for me and my husband (we adopted this street) who spent time cleaning up the debris you so kindly threw over the concrete barriers at the corner of Admiral Way and Admiral Boulevard a few

Caution: Bad winter ahead!
Prepare today with a BCAA Membership! A dead battery or locking your keys in the car can become potentially dangerous when the weather turns nasty. And with all the talk of a harsh winter on the way, it’s time to think about a BCAA Membership to protect the ones you love. With BCAA’s legendary Road Assist service, you can be certain that help is never far away.
We are in for a cold and stormy winter.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac and local weather forecasters predict that we will be experiencing one of the coldest winters on record, with the heaviest snowfalls in mid- and late December and late February.
Will your car be ready?
One of the best ways to be prepared for the severe weather on its way is to be proactive.
One line of attack is a BCAA Membership.
According to Colin MacPhail, Director, Membership Marketing and Product Management at BCAA, many people wait until the first snowfall to call and by then BCAA is already very busy responding to their existing members. “When it cools down, our call centre gets flooded with phone calls, so we are telling people not to wait until their lock freezes or their car won’t start to call us,” says MacPhail. Meanwhile, winter driving can be rough on your car, which is why it is important to properly winterize your car to avoid costly car repair problems later. Fall is the best time to get your car ready for old man winter.
Here are a few things you can do right now:
Check to ensure you have the proper winter antifreeze and keep it topped up at all times; check tires for tread wear (snow tires are optimum); and have an emergency kit in your car at all times - it should include a shovel, sand for weight and traction, tire chains, a blanket, water, food, candles, a flashlight, a reflector and flares. “Should you get stuck on the side of the road for a few hours, someone should know of your trip plans and when you are to be where,” says MacPhail, adding to always have your cell phone fully charged when going on a long trip.
A membership offers great peace of mind and wonderful benefits.
On top of reliable roadside assistance, members also have access to thousands of Show Your Card and Save partner locations across North America where you can save on travel, hotels, car rentals and much more!
The price for peace of mind?
For details call 310-2345, click on www.bcaa.com or visit your nearest BCAA office.
Less than $100 for an individual membership and even less to add an additional member.

Delta must meet Metro quota citrus hair salon B.C. will increase by about 60,000 per year. They say, “The major factor driving population growth over this period will be migration to British Columbia. International migration will account for 75.1 per cent of the population gain, followed by interprovincial migration at 24.6 per cent and natural increase (births minus deaths) at about 0.2 per cent.” Metro Vancouver’s Draft Regional Growth Strategy, in Appendix A, projects regional population growth to be about 35,000 people per year and assigns quotas to member municipalities to plan the added dwelling units needed. According to the strategy, the role of municipalities is to: “Adopt Regional Context Statements which include policies or strategies that indicate how
municipalities will meet the estimated future housing demand as set out in Appendix A which: i) ensure the need for diverse housing options is articulated in municipal plans and policies, including neighbourhoods and area plans; ii) increase the supply and diversity of the housing stock through infill developments, more compact housing forms and increased density; iii) ...” It goes on at length, but you get the idea, you read it in our area plan. Regional district members must ratify and be bound by this and the Local Government Act to plan for dwellings deemed needed by Metro. Delta’s quota is 6,000 total added units between 2006 and 2021. TFN has a separate quota over this period of 1,000. The
Tsawwassen Area Plan would have added 4,157 units in 10 (not 15) years. It appears to me that years wasted by council’s area plan committee learning our wishes had absolutely nothing to do with what we wanted, only where to put Delta’s quota. Since Tsawwassen’s plan was the only one being prepared, and since no one wanted what Metro deemed required (except Southlands development supporters) it seems to me that Delta’s growth quota was arbitrarily plunked down in and around our town centre. Candor about council’s (Metro’s) objectives could have saved us endless meetings and forums. Hopefully they can re-negotiate the quota, or find some gullible part of Delta that won’t scream so loudly. Ed Ries

Bringing their stories to life
Ladner man researches names on local cenotaph
By Jessica Kerr One local man is choosing to honour our veterans in a different way. Ladner’s Peter Broznitsky describes himself as a history buff and an amateur military researcher. In 2003, he started looking into his own family’s ties to the military; both of his grandfathers served during the First World War. More recently, he expanded the scope of his research. He is currently undertaking a project to identify all of the men and women from Delta who served in the Canadian Forces during the First World War. Currently, he’s focusing on Ladner’s cenotaph and is hoping to find out more about the people behind the names engraved there. It’s not easy work. He has been sifting through census data from the early 1900s, military records, old newspapers and other bits and pieces found at the Delta Museum and Archives. “You have to be kind of... a bit tenacious,” he said. “It’s kind of detective work.” Broznitsky said so far he’s identified two pilots, two sailors, two nurses and more than 280 soldiers. Some of those soldiers enlisted, fought and died in France and Flanders, he said. Others were conscripted and made it to England or stayed in Canada. There are 27 names on the cenotaph in remembrance of those who served and died during the First World War. Broznitsky is working to bring their stories to life but he is also facing a few mysteries. “From the evidence so far, it’s not clear why some of the men have their names engraved on the stone,” he said. Typically,
the name of a person who died during the war would be engraved in the cenotaph in his or her hometown, or where they were living. For example, Sidney Welsh. His name appears on the Memorial Park cenotaph and he was the son of a farming family here. He returned to Canada in 1917 and died in Vancouver in 1919, most likely during the Spanish flu epidemic, Broznitsky said. Robert Scott is another one of the names engraved on the cenotaph. “Robert Scott is an interesting name,” he said, and one that has proved difficult to track down. “Many men named Robert Scott died in the First World War.” Then there’s the mysterious S. Montgomery, whose name is reduced to an initial on the cenotaph. So far, Broznitsky has been able to deduce that two who were listed as S. Montgomery died in the war, however neither was from Delta and the name also appears on the Mission cenotaph. The two sailors on the cenotaph, Malcolm Leonard and Fred Whitworth, both died on the same day in different places. With his research so far, Broznitsky has been able to compile some general statistics. Of the 27: six were born in Ladner, five in England, three in Scotland, one in Wales, two in Ireland, one in Vancouver, two in Alberta, two in Manitoba, one in Ontario, one in Quebec and one in Sweden. Just two of the 27 were married. Twenty-two are buried or remembered overseas, the rest in Canada. The youngest was just 18 when he died, the oldest was 38. Broznitsky is appealing to the public for help with his project. He’s looking for any information about, or photos of, any of the men whose names appear on the Ladner cenotaph. He can be contacted at pbroznitsky@ gmail.com.

Remembering the fallen at Agira Tsawwassen’s Sean Hodgins visits Canadian war cemetery in Sicily BY
SEAN HODGINS
Optimist contributor
This past summer, we remembered . . . This past summer my extended family and I were privileged to enjoy a Mediterranean cruise. One of our stops was to the island of Sicily, a land with a unique history, though long part of modern Italy. While the tour itinerary shuffled the masses to Taormina, where we docked, my mother joined me on my planned day trip to the ancient town of Agira and the Agira Canadian War Cemetery, a two-hour drive inland. In July, 1943 the Canadian Army, Navy and Air Force took part in Operation Husky, the invasion and eventual conquer of Sicily. After the disastrous raid on the Germanoccupied port of Dieppe by the Canadians the previous summer, Canadian politicians and military leaders lobbied Allied war councils hard to be included in the next big military operation
to earn their redemption and prove their mettle. Operation Husky would be their chance. Forming part of the larger AngloAmerican force, Canada’s First Army Division became a major part of the invasion force. Sicily was garrisoned by both Italian and German forces. Their air bases on Sicily protected shipping convoys vital for their forces in North Africa. Since the defeat of those forces by the Americans and British earlier in 1943, those air bases continued to menace Allied shipping in the Mediterranean and the British base in Malta. Operation Husky was intent on demolishing that menace as a prelude to a later Allied invasion of mainland Italy. After the Allied landing on the southern tip of Sicily on July 10, 1943, the Canadians were assigned a line of advance roughly up the middle of the island, between the Americans and British. For several days there was only sporadic fighting as the Germans

Graves Commission, in all its cemeteries, allows the families of the war dead the opportunity for an inscription on the headstones. Among the over 500 graves at Agira, the inscription by the family of Private T.F. Simpson of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada made me think about how fortunate my generation has been: “In Loving Memory / Of a Dear Husband and Daddy / Ever in Our Thoughts.” Like so many other Seaforths, Simpson died on July 21, 1943 fighting to take the town of Leonforte. As we wandered the cemetery I reflected on what constituted life’s problems. I realized how petty indeed most of them are standing in this place where over 500 Canadians gave it all up so our future could be free. The narrative of Canada’s military history is often so broad the individual loss is forgotten, but at Agira we remembered. Tsawwassen resident Sean Hodgins is president of the Century Group.

The cenotaph now features a new concrete perimeter to help veterans move around the monument more easily, especially when it is wet and muddy. Hillairet said the project had a cost of $13,000 and that Veterans Affairs Canada would be covering approximately half of that. She noted with the help of Delta Parks and Recreation, South Fraser Concrete and Ocean Construction, the project was completed under the projected cost. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 61 would like to thank the following people that made this restoration possible: • Department of Veterans Affairs Canada • Mayor Lois Jackson and council • John Cummins • Vicki Huntington • Hans Meerdink, John Price and the crew of South Fraser Concrete • Ocean Construction • Ken Kuntz, Shane Margetson and crew of Delta Parks and Recreation • George Koka and Bob Taggart of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 61

Two minutes of silence The government of British Columbia is calling upon all citizens young and old, all businesses and all civic leaders to join in a two-minute wave of silence at 11 a.m. on Remembrance Day. When the guns fell silent on the First World War battlefields and the armistice was signed at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, the moment in history was embraced as Armistice Day. As Britain and its Commonwealth Dominions began planning Armistice
Day services for the following year, an Australian journalist proposed in a letter, that a respectful silence to Remember the Fallen be included in the ceremonies. This letter, scribed by Edward George Honey, was published on May 8, 1919 in the London Evening News and brought to the attention of His Majesty King George V. This silent observance was incorporated into the first Armistice Day service held on November 11th, 1919 in Britain and the Commonwealth Dominions.
Vicki Huntington
Following the Second World War, Armistice Day was renamed as Remembrance Day to honour the fallen from all wars, past, present and future. Over time, the silent observance was not consistently observed by all countries. In 2000, The Royal Canadian Legion and other Commonwealth nations rallied together to revitalize the significance of the silence observance and called for an international two minute wave of silence.

Veterans across Canada have one thing in common. They fought for a cause they believed in and for the freedom that we enjoy today. Canada is one of the best countries in the world to live, work and play because of their efforts and sacriďŹ ce. We owe those who fought for and served our nation a great deal. Delta Christian School is excited to take bargain hunting to the next level as it prepares to host its first annual Upscale Garage Sale this Saturday. Parents and students want to host an event that is both unique as well as relevant and appealing to the community. This sale will have a classy feel yet still offer
hundreds of items at garage sale prices. “Instead of searching through piles of junk on a driveway, we thought it would be fun for shoppers to enjoy the ambience of an upscale boutique as they search out incredible deals,” says Julie Kraft, an event organizer and self-proclaimed bargain hunter.
School doors will open at 9 a.m. and the sale will continue until 3 p.m. A vast array of quality items will be available, including clothing, toys, housewares and even furniture. The sale will also have a café where shoppers can enjoy coffee and treats. Delta Christian is located at 4789-53rd St., Ladner.
WE WILL PURCHASE ITEMS SUCH AS:
CHAINS • EARRINGS • RINGS • WATCHES • BRACELETS MEDALLIONS • DENTAL GOLD BROOCHES • DIAMONDS EMERALDS RUBIES • PRECIOUS STONES BROKEN CHAINS • CLASS RINGS • GOLDEN CHARMS

Devils take aim at first ever B.C. title Second ranked senior girls field hockey team looks to end standout season in Victoria this week by making history BY
MARK BOOTH

The South Delta Sun Devils are 72 hours away from finding out if their talent rich roster translates into making history. The Tsawwassen school is looking to cap a memorable season in style at the Provincial “AAA” Girls Field Hockey Championships which get underway today in Victoria and concludes Friday. With a line-up that features three players involved in the senior or junior national team programs, it’s hardly a stretch to suggest this is the Devils best opportunity to win their first-ever B.C. title. “They certainly have the technical ability to win it all,” coach Neil McLennan agreed. “They are a very good team and if they are on their game and playing to their potential, they are exciting and enjoyable to watch as well.” “Whether that translates into (ultimate) success, you just never know.” McLennan has been around long enough to know talent doesn’t mean everything, especially in a tournament where it will likely take six wins in three days to be standing on top of the podium. Unpredictable November weather, bumpy fields and defen-
sive-minded teams are all intangibles that can end championship dreams. Then there’s the one opponent the Devils have yet to solve this season — the top ranked Carson Graham Eagles. The North Shore school defeated South Delta in the Bridgman Cup final last month and also prevailed in the semifinals of the UBC tournament. As the top two seeds of the 16-team championship, they likely won’t see each other until deep into the playoff round but that doesn’t mean the Sun Devils aren’t anxious to get another crack at their biggest rival. “There definitely in the back of our minds,” smiled junior national team member Emma Mackie. “But we now know our (roundrobin) pool opponents so we are just focusing on those games right now and the other teams that will be in our way. “(We know the school has never won a provincial title) but we are looking to change that this year. It’s good for us to be playing on a water-base field and (being in Victoria this time) is the change of scenery that might change the cards for us this time.” Despite a roster that is about to lose six players to graduation, the Devils still feature some excellent young talent that has made valuable contributions this season,

The first-year Grade 10 fit in immediately with this tight knit group. “They’ve all been great and
welcoming and I have never felt out of place,” she said. “We’ve been training hard and I think we will be ready to rumble.”

Seafair is one of the early season provincial contenders and are led by forward Tyler Sandhu — a projected top pick in the 2011 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. Other participating teams include: Richmond, Semiahmoo, Mission and Juan De Fuca. The playoff round gets underway on Saturday with quarter-final games starting at 12:45 p.m. The semi-final games are slated for 8 a.m. and 10:45
a.m. on Sunday and the championship game is set for 4:15 p.m. All games will take place at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The last time the host association took top honours was in 2006 with a team that featured arguably the deepest talent ever assembled by a South Delta Minor Hockey rep program, including current Vancouver Giant star Brendan Gallagher and several others who are now playing at the junior level. That team culminated its season at the provincial championships.

United Martial Arts in fine form at Western Canadian Challenge
Tsawwassen’s United Martial Arts turned in a strong showing at the recent Western Canadian Martial Arts Challenge at BCIT. The team brought in eight competitors and walked out with 10 medals. What was most impressive was the results produced by UMA’s first-time competitors. Taylor Brown received a silver medal in Junior Mixed Martial Arts division and a bronze in Modified Muay Thai after moving up a weight division. Logan MacLean earned fourth place in Jr MMA, ending each of his first two matches with a TKO. Spencer Smith captured silver in a very competitive Jr MMA division, and Travis Hoheisel also brought home silver in Modified Muay Thai—a very tough division. “These are impressive results for our first time fighters, they had some tough
matches, but each put in the time to train for their division to ensure a safe, fun, and positive experience,” said coach Sami Gustafson. Also representing Team United and bringing home gold medals were veteran competitors Ashvin Bilga, with one TKO in Jr MMA; Adi Zemel, finishing his gold medal match with an arm bar in Jr MMA; Hunter Clennan, earning gold in both Jr MMA and Modified Muay Thai; and Cameron Bryan bringing home gold after winning each round with a submission (one arm bar and two rear naked chokes) in Jr MMA, as well as a gold medal in Modified Muay Thai sparring. Andrew Davis and Gustafson, who coach and also own the gym, were very proud of all the competitors and look forward to training for the next tournament.

Pearson earns all-star award for runner-up Thunderbirds Victoria Pearson had a leading role in the UBC Thunderbirds’ silver medal finish at last weekend’s CIS National Field Hockey Championships in Guelph. The forward from Tsawwassen finished the tournament with three goals, including UBC’s lone tally in the championship game —a 2-1 loss to the University of Toronto Blues. Pearson’s goal in the 26th minute put UBC on even terms. The Blues netted the game winner with four minutes remaining. The South Delta secondary graduate was also named to the tournament all-star team.

A community service from the
The Tsawwassen Royals continued their strong play of late with a 3-0 win over the GFC United Lions in Vancouver Metro Soccer League Second Division play. After two solid outings in the previous weeks, the Royals were looking to explode against a team lower in the standings on a chilly Friday night at the Winskill turf. However it was a disappointing opening 70 minutes where the Royals seemed to play to the level of their opponent — with scrappy play, short possession periods and not finishing their chances. The soccer gods did look kindly on the Royals after substitutes Andrew Hodges , Skafti Sinclair and Manu Meneses injected life into a game going nowhere. Hodges challenged for a cross in the 18 yard box that eventually hit the post and rebounded for Sinclair to head home the game’s opening goal. The Lions seemed to collapse at that point. Meneses found himself in open
space coming off the wing, moments later, and fired a long range shot that tipped in under the crossbar for the Spaniard’s first of the season. The highlight of the night came off the foot on an unlikely source — fullback Andy Raines. With the urging of the fans behind him, he found space coming off the sideline and unleashed a laser to the top corner at the far post. It was definately a goal of the year contender. Raines thanked Hodges for the hard work to set up the play . “The evening was not a masterpiece performance but with ties in the past two games that should have yielded better results, we were satisfied with the win,” said Royals coach Jim Norris. The previous weekend saw the Royals travel to North Vancouver for a key divisional game against Wickham FC. The two squads entered the match as part of a three-way tie for second place in the league standings. The Royals dominated the opening
30 minutes but did not create many good scoring opportunities. A free kick at the edge of the 18-yard box and the subsequent rebound gave Wickham the go ahead goal midway through the first half. The Royals did not change their strategy and their persistence paid off with about 20 minutes game when rookie center back Nick Jorgenson scored on a header off a corner kick . The Royals almost produced the winner off of several free kicks in the final minutes but had to walk away with a disappointing 1-1 draw. That result came on the heels of battling league leaders HNK Vaterni to a scoreless draw despite the locals enjoying the better scoring chances. The Royals (5-2-2) travel to Vancouver this weekend to face the Green Devils. Corner kicks ... The club’s CAT team dropped a 2-0 decision to the Richmond Olympics last Saturday at Minoru Park.
DDRC crews shine in Victoria head races
Delta Deas Rowing Club had a successful weekend at the University of Victoria head races. On Saturday, DDRC competed in the Head of the Gorge which is a race notorious for the difficult trip to the start line through the Tillicum Narrows. The rowers had to battle a 9 knot
current to get through the narrows to the start line but it was worth the effort with four Delta crews placing second and one snagging a third place finish. It was the usual crowd pleasing spectacle with a number of boats flipping as they attempted to traverse the raging current, including a Delta
double. The DDRC crew valiantly got back in their boat and finished the race. On Sunday it was on to the Head of the Elk — a grueling 8 km race around the perimeter of the lake. Once again Delta came through with three first place finishes and a second.

RUDSTON-BROWN, DOROTHY Febuary 19, 1925 - October 31, 2010 Sadly, after a brief illness, our dear mother Dorothy RudstonBrown passed away Oct 31, 2010 at age 85. Predeceased by her husband of more than 50 years Bryan in 2005, she leaves behind sister Shirley, sons David (Denise), Blair (Melody) and Blake. She was enormously proud of her 6 grandsons Cory (Leanne), Chris, Sean, Jeffrey, Alex and Mark. She was also greatly pleased to welcome greatgrandson Reese in 2010. She was also a beloved Aunty Dot to many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Her loss will also be felt by her many friends. Born in Cloan, Sask in 1925 Dorothy grew up on the family farm and many of her values and her enormous strength of character came from that family and land. The closeness of that family carried her through all of her years and she was a vibrant presence at any family event. She married Dad in Calgary in 1954 and married life took them from Calgary via Vancouver to Tsawwassen where they moved in 1964 and never left. Raising a family and having a career as a librarian caused the years to whirl by and they remained active until Dads later illness. After his death she lived a busy life spending as much time with family as possible and maintaining old friendships while cultivating many new ones that she valued immensely. She faced her final illness with her typical courage and real concern for the loved ones left behind. She lived as she wanted, fully and enthusiastically to the end. Please join us in a celebration of her life that will be held on Sunday November 14th 1-4 pm at the Beach Grove Golf Club. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Delta Hospice Society would be appreciated.
PRUSS Patricia Louise
Oct. 14, 1943 to Oct. 22, 2010 Pattie passed away peacefully in the arms of longtime love and companion Robbie Kerr. Pattie and Robbie enjoyed 41 years together, 38 of those years in the house of her dreams on the Fraser River. Pattie worked for many years in the fishing industry and happily retired with her beloved pets and gardening. Pattie will be lovingly remembered by her family and many friends. There will be no service by request, but a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Donations in Pattie’s memory can be made to the SPCA.
Born June 2, 1919 in Vancouver. Passed away November 1, 2010. Pre-deceased by his wife Valerie in 2005. Survived by his sons Doug (Carolyn), John and daughter Barb (Angie); granddaughters Lisa and Cynthia (Petar); brother Bob (Margaret); and sister-inlaw Birdie Cavanagh. Ted served in the RCAF during WW II and was assigned to ground crew preparing landing fields for allied planes in the liberation of the Netherlands and Belgium. He joined his father, which later included his brother, in the family wholesale business, founded by his grandfather M.P. Morris. Together they ran a successful cordage, gift wrap and florist wholesale supply company until 1999. Following in his father and grandfather’s footsteps, he held the position of Consul for Chile in Vancouver from 1964 until 1971. The family is extremely grateful for Dad’s outstanding care at Delta Hospital, the Irene Thomas Hospice and Kin Village Long Term Care Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations to Kin Village Association 5410 10th Ave, Delta, BC V4M 3X8. A memorial reception is planned on November 20. Please contact tedmorris91@gmail.com for details, by November 16th.
When we are sad and lonely And everything goes wrong, We seem to hear you whisper, “Cheer up and carry on.” Each time we see your photo You seem to smile and say, “Don’t cry I’m only sleeping We’ll meet again someday.”
DAVIES Ernest Harry Born April 14, 1922 in Amulet, Sask., Ernie passed away peacefully at his home in Delta on October 31, 2010. He was predeceased by his wife Evelyn.
