North-south split in voter turnout By-election is latest example of how South Deltans come out to the polls in greater numbers than North Deltans BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Last Saturday’s Delta council by-election provided further proof that North Deltans simply aren’t as interested in civic politics as their South Delta counterparts. Despite having a population of around 52,000, more than the approximately 44,000 combined for Tsawwassen and Ladner, the number of North Delta voters in the Sept. 18 byelection was once again smaller, even though half of the eight candidates were from North Delta. While the overall voter turnout was fairly strong at just under 25 per cent, no polling station in North Delta reached 20 per cent, unlike in Ladner and Tsawwassen where every station exceeded that mark, many by a significant amount. Ladner’s Ian Paton won the seat with almost 34 per cent of the vote. The second and third place finishers were fellow South Delta candidates, Sylvia Bishop and Maria DeVries. Mayor Lois Jackson, who has lived in North Delta for many years, said she isn’t surprised South Delta once again exceeded North Delta, noting it’s a difficult

Delta council by-election candidates campaigned in North Delta, but couldn’t prompt voters to go to the polls in numbers found in Ladner and Tsawwassen. issue to try to solve. “It has been like that ever since I’ve been around. The populous doesn’t seem to have the focus on municipal politics and municipal
system like they do down in Ladner and Tsawwassen,” said Jackson. “I guess there’s lots of reasons for that. Municipal hall is down there and the
majority of people in North Delta, with people coming and going all the time, might not even know where the hall is. It’s always been like that and we’ve always
had a lower voter turnout in North Delta than the other two combined,” she said. Jackson noted a big problem has been the lack of media coverage focusing
on North Delta, with Surrey news often dominating the community. What will make it worse is the gradual loss of community television programming as more people switch from Delta Cable, she said. As far as what can be done to engage North Delta residents, Jackson said many ideas have already been tried. “We’ve tried so many things. We’ve tried the Delta Page, we’ve tried taking meetings on the road and a lot of things like sending out newsletters,” she said. North Delta resident Sandeep Pandher, the fourth place finisher in last Saturday’s by-election, said the low North Delta turnout is troubling and the lack of news coverage exacerbates the problem. “It’s happening again and again. North Delta residents choosing not to participate, and it’s not a one-time thing. The South Delta issues seem to be dominating and it doesn’t help you have columnists saying you have to vote for someone from South Delta,” he said. “I think those kind of factors do play into the psyche of the voters and people were way more engaged in South Delta than in North Delta.”
Zalm steals page from reality TV to launch recall efforts SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Monday marks the launch of a competition by Fight HST to determine which B.C. Liberal MLAs will face recall campaigns. Fight HST leader Bill Vander Zalm this week announced his group will
begin a reality TV showinspired campaign called MLA Survivor Recall — Vote them off the Island, which will see which ridings can sign up the most canvassers between Sept. 27 and Nov. 15, the day recalls can begin. At the end of the contest, the three ridings with the
most canvassers will win the right to conduct the first recalls early next year under the Fight HST banner. A new recall will then launch every month in the order of how many canvassers have been signed up. Vander Zalm said Premier Gordon Campbell can avoid the recalls if the
upcoming referendum on the harmonized sales tax follows series of conditions, including requiring only a simple majority, that it be binding on government and held this year. A legislature committee voted to send the tax to a referendum and the date was set for Sept 24, 2011.
In an interview last week, Vander Zalm, a Ladner resident and former premier, said recalls would still likely proceed because the premier can’t be trusted. Also last week, a B.C. Supreme Court chief justice rejected Vander Zalm’s constitutional challenge to the HST.
Meanwhile, on another front in the battle against the controversial new tax, the New Democrats announced this week that leader Carole James has proposed an amendment to B.C.’s Recall and Initiative Act that would pave the way for a vote as early as this fall.

Delta council announced Monday night a name change for the new archives. Originally slated to be named the Edgar Dunning Archives, council decided at an in-camera meeting on Sept. 13 to name the new municipal-museum community archive building the Delta Archives. At that same meeting, civic politicians approved a motion to name the public accessible area of the new archive the Edgar Dunning Reading Room. The original announcement was made at municipal hall in early January, which coincided with the celebration of Dunning’s 100th birthday. Mayor Lois Jackson said the municipality was responding to a request for the change that came through the hall. “I thought it was kind of going too far to name the whole building after me,” Dunning said this week. Last September, the provincial government announced that Delta’s

The archives of the Delta Museum and Archives will also locate there. The $675,000 project will receive $225,000 each from Victoria and Ottawa, with Delta picking up the remaining one-third of the cost. Located adjacent to municipal hall, the building that will be home to the new archives was con-
structed in the 1960s. It had been the municipal hall for a number of years before the current hall was built. The building later housed court services before the provincial government closed the courthouse in 2002. Soon after the court closed, the RCMP Lower Mainland District Traffic Service moved into the premises and over the years there’s been talk of other uses, including a post-secondary institution. More recently, the idea of converting it into a climatecontrolled archive came forward.

Public hearing dates set for complaint against officers JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
The public hearing to investigate a complaint lodged against two Delta police officers will go ahead early next year. More than a year ago, the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner announced that a public hearing would be held to investigate allegations of unlawful entry into a home and use of excessive force by constables Steve Wilson and Sukhprit Sidhu. The complaint stems from an incident in Surrey in January of 2008 when the two officers entered a
home on 96A Avenue and arrested the son of the homeowner. Six days later, the homeowner launched a complaint, alleging the officers unlawfully entered the home and used excessive force in entering the home as well as in the arrest of the homeowner’s son. The complaint was forwarded to the Delta police department and an investigation was carried out by the department’s professional standards section. On Oct. 8, 2008, Delta police chief Jim Cessford determined the allegations were unsubstantiated based on the final report.
However, police complaint commissioner Stan Lowe raised concerns about the report and asked Cessford to reconsider. The chief reviewed the file, sought a third legal opinion and determined that his original finding — that the allegations were unsubstantiated — would remain. Lowe reviewed the matter and determined that in the public interest a public hearing is required. This week, the date for the hearing was made public. It is scheduled to take place Feb. 14 to 18 and Feb. 21 to 25 at the Robson Square Courthouse in Vancouver.

Houweling decides to burn natural gas East Ladner greenhouse had been seeking regional approval to exceed emission limits for wood-fired boilers SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Houweling’s Nurseries Ltd. has dropped an application to exceed regional air emission limits. The company had asked Metro Vancouver for a 15month delay in complying with the new regional agricultural boilers emission regulation bylaw, which drew the ire of Delta council. The regional district recently informed Delta the company withdrew its application to exceed the limits for its wood-fired boilers. President Casey Houweling told the Optimist his company has decided to use more expensive natural gas until new emission control equipment for burning wood waste can be installed early next year. “From the amount of back pressure we were getting, we looked at it and
said we’ll just shelve it and hopefully next year we’ll have our new facility up,” he said. Two years ago, after the B.C. Supreme Court upheld Metro Vancouver’s ability to regulate agricultural emissions by permits, and more stringently than provincial regulations, the district proceeded to adopt new regulations. The regional bylaw, which came into full effect Sept. 1, 2010, applies to both natural gas and woodfired boilers and primarily affects the greenhouse industry. A Delta staff report to council noted the rationale by Houweling in asking for an extension was that it would allow for additional time to acquire and install the required pollution control equipment to three wood-fired boilers. Delta staff felt that more than adequate time had been provided to greenhouse operators to prepare

In an earlier interview, Houweling said they were waiting for a clear direction because the regional district’s revised air quality regulations were still up in the air. He also said the new technology will cost his operation likely in the range of $5 million to $6 million. Saying they intend to achieve the highest standards, he told the Optimist his firm would work with the regional district. “We’re working with the GVRD to see what kind of alternative we’re going to come up with. It’s not that simple because, first, you need the GVRD to stand behind it and, secondly, because of the capital this takes you’re looking at a 20-year lifespan, and the third issue is the availability

MURPHY’S LAW Say what you will about Bill Vander Zalm, but the former premier is teaching the current one a few tricks about public relations. Faced with a petition against the HST of power-busting proportions, I fully expected Premier Gordon Campbell to defiantly stand behind his government’s decision to bring in the controversial tax. Based on the many opinion polls, it wouldn’t have been a popular move, but it would have stayed in character with the dismissive reaction given to the whopping signature total (which topped out at more than 700,000) gathered by Vander Zalm and his Fight HST cohorts. I thought the whole initiative would die on the floor of the legislature in Victoria with the governing Liberals ignoring the bill. That’s not to say the unrest would have been quelled, not by any stretch of the imagination, but it would have spelled the end of that particular process. Campbell’s Liberals chose the other option, deciding to put the issue in front of voters in a sanctioned referendum, which, in theory, should have scored it some public relations points by allowing the people to decide the fate of the tax. Like so much else when it comes to the HST, however, that hasn’t worked. The big sticking point is obviously the fact the referendum won’t be held for 12 months, not until Sept. 24, 2011. Even the most apolitical people furrow their brows over the need to wait an entire year to put the question to voters, so any goodwill Campbell hoped to create by taking it to the public has been lost in the furor over the delay. Meanwhile, Vander Zalm and the rest of the Fight HST bunch took a page out of reality TV this week by introducing MLA Survivor Recall, a contest where constituencies throughout the province compete to see which one will be first to launch a recall campaign against their Liberal representative. So while the Liberals will spend the next year trying to sell British Columbians on the benefits of the harmonized sales tax in the run up to the referendum, Fight HST will be stealing the show through highly publicized volunteer recruitment efforts and the subsequent recall campaigns. Any hope that people would either forget about the tax, get used to it or become converts will almost certainly be lost as Vander Zalm puts vulnerable Liberals in the crosshairs. Throw in the added economic uncertainty a tax in limbo creates and I don’t think it’ll necessarily be a beneficial year for the government.
Gain appreciation for food by understanding its journey MIKE SCHNEIDER
COMMUNITY COMMENT Food is becoming increasingly complicated. It used be that you could just enjoy it if you wanted to. Now you have to question where it comes from and decide if you approve of its journey to your plate. People love to talk about food, but increasingly they are talking about it in ways that would seem foreign to us just a few years ago. Not only are food travel itineraries drawn in to question, the way food is marketed, retailed and ultimately grown are serious topics at the dinner, council and boardroom tables. There seems to have been an explosion of opinion on how, where and when food should be grown and distributed. As Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, “Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil and you’re a thousand miles from the corn field.” There is no doubt that getting
back to a more simple understanding of how food is grown and how it travels in a global distribution network may help us make choices that can benefit our families and communities when it makes sense. If we take a few moments to consider our local environment we will see some telling statistics and traits that would suggest some changes may need to be considered. Perhaps the most obvious problem that we have locally is that we have an aging core of farmers in the Delta. Of the 260 operators reported in the 2006 census, it was noted that the average age of our farmers was 54.6 years old. Depressingly, just 20 of 260 operators in Delta were under the age of 35. On average, this is the fourth consecutive year of negative earnings in the farming community. Farming requires huge capital investments that are generally serviced by loans, a daunting scenario in any economic climate. What can we do? For starters, we can eat fresh local foods when they are in season. We should also try to understand a little about the market. We should know, for instance, that if every acre of farmland in the Delta was simultaneously farmed there would not be a market for all the crops.
The Optimist encourages readers to write letters to the editor. Letters are accepted on any topic, although preference is given to those on local matters. The Optimist reserves the right to edit letters and the decision to publish is at the discretion of the editor or publisher. All letters must be signed, dated and include the writer’s phone number
We should not expect the food we grow in Delta would stay in local markets. This would be the ultimate demise for our local farming community. In off season, try to remember that trade balances and demand will ensure there are fresh fruit and vegetables in the produce section. The choice is yours. Rest assured that given the opportunity for success, our farmers will farm and will evolve and adapt to new types of food production and market circumstance, ALR not withstanding. In Raj Patel’s Stuffed and Starved, there is the modest suggestion a re-acquaintance with food can be initiated right at your own dinner table. The idea is that if we take the time to appreciate how ingredients are grown, selected and thoughtfully transformed into dinner that we will gain a greater respect for the entire process of farm to plate. A chart in the book shows that from 1934 to 2010, home cooking times have gone down from 2.5 hours to eight minutes. Milestones along the way? Modern appliances 1954 (one hour), “prepared food” 1974 (half-hour), fresh and frozen foods 1994 (15 minutes), home delivery 2010 (eight minutes). Think about that the next time you order a pizza.

Reality check for premier conveniently forgets ever having seen an 18-page briefing on the HST before the last election. And this is the guy who is running the province’s financial affairs? Hansen has even gone so far as to try and play on the people’s emotions by “apologizing.” When I saw that headline in the papers I thought, “What? Could it be true? Has the man finally decided to come to his senses and come clean?” Then after reading the article I realized it was more of Hansen’s fluff. He was not apologizing for deceiving the voters, he was merely apologizing for not adequately letting the people know about the benefits of the HST. What is remarkably incredulous is Campbell’s and Hansen’s insistence the HST is “the best thing that could happen to this province.” Unbelievable! If they truly believed this,
then why did they not make it part of their campaign platform before the last election? I’ve no doubt they denied it was in the works because they knew the surest way of sabotaging the party’s chances of being re-elected would be to announce any planned tax increases, especially during an economic downturn. Campbell and Hansen operate on the premise that the end justifies the means. In other words, it does not matter what you say to the people, it does not matter if promises are broken, it does not matter if someone has lied. All that matters is the end result. Is this what we want our children to learn? If Campbell wants to talk about reality shows, the first thing he needs to do is a reality check because in my opinion he is out of touch. David F. Horvath
Sidekick offers professional quality show
Editor: Theatre in our very own community is alive and well! On Wednesday night my husband and I attended opening night at the Patti McGregor Theatre in Tsawwassen (formerly the Tsawwassen Arts Centre). It was opening night for a Canadian play by Paul McLaughlin called Jacques
Plante and the Parkdale Knitting League, produced by Sidekick Players and directed by Carroll Allan. We sat around our little table with our glass of wine and were spellbound by the story, the amazing performances and the exciting quality of this production. I’m still re-living the experience and am so grateful to be able to enjoy such pro-
fessional theatre here in this community. See this play if you can this week or next, but be sure to call to ensure a seat. Bernice Fehr Editor’s note: The play will be performed tonight at 8 p.m., tomorrow at 2 p.m. and Wednesday to Saturday of next week at 8 p.m. nightly. Reserve tickets by calling 604-288-2415.

Editor: I was quite amused when I watched Premier Gordon Campbell’s response to what Bill Vander Zalm has dubbed the MLA Survivor Recall. Campbell has been quoted as saying, “I think it’s a shame Mr. Vander Zalm thinks this is a reality television program.” I wonder if Campbell is aware of the kind of show he’s been putting on over in Victoria these past several years? Each time I tune in to the proceedings I don’t know whether I’m watching I’ve Got a Secret, What’s My Line, To Tell The Truth, The Gong Show or Let’s Make A Deal. Campbell’s number one minion, Finance Minister Colin Hansen, suffers from acute selective memory loss. When cornered he conveniently forgets preelection emails and conversations about the HST. He

Shoppers Drug Mart locations across Canada, including the one in Tsawwassen, launched the ninth annual Tree of Life fundraising campaign last weekend. The four-week campaign runs Sept. 18 to Oct. 15 and aims to raise funds in support of leading local women’s health organizations and charities in the communities they serve. This year’s campaign gives customers the option of choosing from different donation levels. A “leaf ” can be purchased for $1, a “butterfly” for $5 or a “cardinal” for $50. “The ninth year of the Tree of Life campaign will see 100 per cent of proceeds donated to women’s health organizations, ensuring women have even greater access to the information and resources they need to stay healthy in mind, body and spirit,” said Lisa Gibbs, manager of community investment with Shoppers Drug Mart. “With the commitment and support of our pharmacist-owners and their teams at store level, our employees and customers, we are confident that we will reach our goal of raising $2 million to improve the health of women and their families across Canada.” *** An annual charity golf

Children’s Hospital initiative that has established a network of health authorities and health care providers dedicated to excellence in the care of infants, children and youth in B.C.
Since 2007, Child Health B.C. has supported the creation of five child health facilities in B.C. as well as providing education and training opportunities for health-care providers with the goal of increasing pediatric care capacity throughout the province. “For more than two decades, we’ve focused our community support efforts on kids and their families,” said OFG president Steve van der Leest. “We’re grateful for the support of our suppliers, team members and customers, helping us bring kids the care they need, closer to home. The Classic Fore Kids tournament is a great example of that.” Since 1995, the tournament has raised close to $4 million for B.C. Children’s Hospital.

Heading north from Delta Street all the way to the Yukon
Dr. Janet Roberts is pleased to welcome ...
Reviews necessary as books begin arriving for the Christmas season EDGAR DUNNING
RAMBLING Dictionaries are like watches. The worst is better than none at all and even the best cannot be expected to run quite true. — Samuel Johnson. Christmas must be coming, judging from the number of books that have arrived recently for review purposes. So, we’ll have to interrupt the reminiscences about Delta Street but I’ll return to them — there are lots more — after I tell you about some of the literary works I have received. First is History Hunting in the Yukon by Michael Gates, published by Harbour Publishing of Madeira Park on the Sunshine Coast. Here’s a sample quotation from the book to give you a taste of the writing: “Over the years I have wandered over hills and into valleys, following trails left by travellers of old. What I’ve learned is that the human imprint in the Yukon is scattered everywhere — frozen in ice and snow, sitting on mountaintops and buried beneath buildings. History anywhere is a treasure and nowhere more fascinating than in the Yukon.” The book reveals fascinating accounts from Canada’s northern territory, such as the true story behind gunfighter Jack Dalton or pioneer woman Frances Muncaster, a slim beauty who mined for gold on Squaw Creek and was as comfortable in elegant evening gowns as she was in prospecting gear. It also provides an
account of the secret love life of Robert Service, who served as a bank clerk in Fairbanks, Yukon, and later in Duncan on Vancouver Island. It’s a good read about a fascinating part of Canada. The author settled in the Yukon in 1971 and fell in love with the north. He is the author of Gold at Fortymile Creek and writes a history column for the Yukon News. The next book, Slapshot Hockey Quizbook, is one of the more unusual books I’ve ever reviewed. It’s all about the game of hockey, about which I’m largely ignorant, and contains lots of trivia, puzzles and more information about the popular game. Compiled by The Puzzling Sports Institute, it’s published by Nightwood Editions and if you want to know about that organization you can get details at www.nightwoodeditions, an independent publisher. Hockey fans of all ages have a new way to enjoy their favourite sport with this collection of hockey puzzles. International Men of Mystery tests readers’ knowledge of foreign players. All in the Family asks for names of various family members. Odd Ones Out is a quiz looking for items that don’t belong and Quotables asks readers to decipher fact from fiction in a series of made-up and real quotes. The Puzzling Sports Institute is dedicated to the creation of fun and quizbooks for a variety of sports. It’s the brainchild of Jesse Ross, who claims to have loved sports for as long as he can remember. Even for me, ignorant as I am about the game, it was fun to read.

Junior authors showcase skills in contest Third annual Delta-based competition attracts entries from throughout the province
This summer young writers from around the province were invited to send in short stories to Delta’s third annual Junior Authors Short Story Contest. Forty-six stories were submitted from 13 municipalities ranging from Vancouver Island to the Cariboo. “We had eight stories from Prince George alone,” said contest organizer Laura Thomas of Ladner. “That’s just three more submissions than we had from Delta.” But Delta did take home some prizes. For the second year, Noa Wang of Ladner won the tween category (ages 10-13) with her tightly written and descriptive short story, Stars on the Surface. Aside from winning the tween category, Wang’s tale of survival was also the

This old gal was found sad and lonely and in need of some help. The people who found her believe she was abandoned. Matilda came into the shelter EXTREMELY MATTED and thin! Matilda is a much happier kitty now that she has a warm bed. She is a senior girly and is hyperthyroid so on a very cheap medication. Because of this she has a special reduced adoption price. What is most important is that she finds a wonderful, big hearted person with time and love to share!

The cold black saltwater clawed the sides of the white sailboat, pushing it back and forth between icy waves. The tar-like sea roared and hissed into the salty wind. It sounded like they were arguing. I slouched lower in my chair in the dusty boat cabin, scowling through the window and out at the grey deck. I saw my mother running around outside, yelling and waving her arms around at no one in particular. The sails were being whipped around viciously by the wind and looked like they were going to be torn to tattered white shreds any moment. As I glared out of the foggy window, I remembered my friend, Chelsea. She would be in Hawaii right now, I thought bitterly. While she was basking in the flawless sunlight and humming along to her iPod, I got to sit in a plastic chair in a grubby cabin while listening to the sea gnawing the boat into salt-flavoured pulp. I groaned and slumped even lower in my worn seat. I was so bored; there was nothing to do on this boat. Maybe my mom had some-

My brain dims and whirs but the sweatshop there never stops. So. This is how it starts. It starts innocently. It starts with warm milk with honey. It starts with buying NeoCitran on my way home from school. After that it’s Sominex. Lunesta. Sonata. Such soft, lullaby names. My brain dims and whirs but the sweatshop there never stops. But when I discover Ambien, the overworked underpaid child labourers unionize, and I — at last! — fall asleep. I did not expect the dizziness, though. I fall down the stairs. Trip over nothing. My fingers become lacerated with paper cuts. I buy band-aids and shrug it off. Once, out of the corner of my eye, I see my teddy bear playing Stella Stella Ola with my Simba toy, which proves how stressful midterms are. Everything is fine until the morning that my dog barks as I am leaving for school. I turn. There he is, eyes as big and dark as grapes, tongue lolling, fur glowing in the light. I stare at him. My stomach drops. What is his name? And then it comes back to me — Dipper! — and I am opening my arms, and he is licking my face, and I am off to school with my eyes clenched against the morning sun. Halfway through the dissection in Biology that day, I fall off my stool and hit my head on the floor. When I wake up, it’s in a
hospital bed. The doctor who comes in gives me a look that says Don’t bullshit me. I swallow my story about how dissections make me queasy. He says: lucky, life-threatening, hallucination, addiction. He knows a guy who tried to hang himself from his balcony after taking Ambien. I don’t really hear him because little green men are dancing on his shoulder. “What’s Ambien?” I try. He shows me my test results and I feel his eyes close down on my face like a clamp. Goodnight Ambien, good morning America. Now there are two clocks in my room. I love these clocks, these friends who have marched me off to sleep night after night after night. Tonight, one is a wounded soldier, limping, with one leg dragging behind, and the other is pensive: quiet for a few beats and then suddenly clear and precise-a heartbeat, fading in and out, in and out. Once, together, they discovered jazz. I used to think clocks were like bombs. Ticking ticking ticking ticking ticking as if toward some unseen Armageddon. Now I know the only bombs that really exist are strapped to our ribcages. They start the moment we start. They have been preset by an invisible hand, ready to detonate at any moment. These bombs are the only ones that ever really explode. Now I listen intently to clocks everywhere. I can always sniff out a clock. The ticking of my clocks is never the same. I close my eyes. Slide into their senza misura rhythm. Only then do I forget the spidery light telling knock-knock jokes at my window. Only then does my hyper brain calm down. I listen. And when the silence becomes so dense that it seems like it is the sound and the ticking is merely the space between, I know I am almost there. Listen. This is how I fall asleep.

Listen: I used to be able to sleep without the curtains drawn. The moonlight was once upon a time my purple crayon, and with it, I could draw anything I wanted on the blank canvas in the back of my mind that I reserved for dreams. But things have changed. We are estranged now, the moon and I. When she’s with me, the tides are my blankets and she tucks me into them only to periodically pull them away, leaving me exposed and insomnious in her light. And so every night I deadbolt the blinds and lock the curtains, equip my window with AlarmForce Security Systems. Still she tugs the strings of my mind. My brain becomes a crazy life factory, churning out things like what did I have for breakfast on Friday crap were the library books due today when is my Biology test oh my God is it tomorrow no it is next week okay phew what was that sound oh it’s just Dipper go to sleep go to sleep go to ... My bed is far too close to the window, that’s what it is. The moon’s tentacles pick the locks to my eyes, shoot the sentries patrolling my skull and end up in the auditorium of my mind, dancing, dancing, under the one burning spotlight that keeps me awake all night. The next day, I go swimming. I take a bubble bath. I do yoga. I consult a feng shui specialist. I put on a Debussy CD and lay in bed listening. No good. It’s the moon again, damn it. But no. Today I will not lose. Today I will fall asleep. And I won’t just fall asleep; I will fall asleep like Franz Liszt played the piano, with ecstasy and madness and with such style and obvious genius that it will become the stuff of legends, everyone will gasp and toss roses and in the morning, Cirque du Soleil will call and beg me to join (it will
be hard, but I’ll have to turn them down); I will fall into sleep as if into the arms of an adoring crowd, I will fall into sleep headfirst like some fall into love, my heart bound to my sleeve with Velcro and the parachute billowing behind. I get an hour and a half of sleep that night, and in the morning, I look like I have been mauled by a leopard seal.

who have had a family member disappear, and will never give up looking until the person, or their remains, are found. I am presently incapacitated because of surgery and have to use a wheelchair. I am learning to let go of many things and allow others to help me. I have learned that I cannot look for ways to do things. I need to let go of them. Perhaps the passage from Ecclesiastes relates more to faith. Many people will search and search for the “truth” when sometimes they simply need to let go, and let the truth find them. Jesus said to his disciples: “If you continue in my word ... you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” (John 8:32)

There is a wonderful passage of Scripture, familiar to many, from Ecclesiastes, Chapter 3 that begins: “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven....” It is a philosophical musing on the events of life, and it seems that all human life will encounter challenges and difficulties, as well as joys and successes, from time to time. I recently heard this passage read again, and one particular line caught my ear. Verse 6: “A time to seek, and a time to lose (the translation I was listening to said give up).” It struck me as an interesting thought because how many of us, if we lose something of value, will search and search until we find it? I think particularly of those people

Inspiring ability once again Celebrate the Child! fundraiser returns to Tsawwassen after inaugural success
C
DAVE WILLIS
elebrate the Child! Inspire Ability is back for its second go around. The fundraising concert, set for next Saturday in Tsawwassen, is once again helping causes in the Dominican Republic and another closer to home that both involve kids with disabilities. The inaugural event, held last November, had a “really good response,” says Randy Schmidt, one of the organizers. It raised $4,875 for International Child Care’s program for 400 disabled children in the Dominican Republic (which turned into $19,500 with a three-to-one match from the Canadian International Development Agency), and $1,650 for the Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions accessible playground project at Centennial Beach. Local jazz group Southside Vibe, Christian singer/songwriter Christine Magee, ventriloquist Neale Bacon, harpist Judy Henry and children’s entertainer Matt Levy are scheduled to perform at this year’s event. “We specifically designed it to be family friendly and be a great place to bring the kids and have fun,” says Schmidt. Jennifer Krempien, a five-time Paralympian in wheelchair basket-
ball, will appear as a special guest. “I’m looking forward to what she has to say about reaching her potential and helping our kids reach their potential,” says Schmidt. He says there are two main reasons to put on the event. The first is providing a fun evening that’s welcoming to families with kids

with disabilities and the second is having a chance “for those of us who benefited from the resources we have here to give back and give to those who don’t have some of those services.” International Child Care, a children’s health agency, will get three-quarters of the proceeds for its community-based rehabilitation program in Santiago. “The program provides weekly
visits and rehabilitation services and also helps get them enrolled in schools,” says Schmidt, who lived and worked in Haiti and the Dominican Republic for International Child Care in the 1990s. The rest of the proceeds will go to the Reach Child and Youth Development Society, a non-profit group that has been providing services to children and their families since 1959. One of Schmidt’s daughters, Nicola, has spina bifida, a condition where vertebrae don’t make their normal ring shapes around the spinal cord. “She gets lots of support and part of it comes from Reach. She’s just thriving. She loves school,” he says, adding that Nicola just turned six and has started Grade 1. Reach is embarking on a capital campaign to build a new child development centre in Ladner, says Cathy Nidoski, the society’s communications director She says the campaign is a fouryear project and Reach hopes to raise $4 million. “We are all very excited about this project,” says Nidoski. Celebrate the Child! Inspire Ability is set for Saturday, Oct. 2 at 2 p.m. at Tsawwassen Alliance Church, 4951-12th Ave. A silent auction begins at 5:30 p.m. while the concert starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $5 for kids, $15 for adults and $35 for a family.

Cycling comes second on tour Staples of a decent day in Hungary should include pork and Palinka BY

here are no crack of dawn starts when you’re traveling with Hungary’s Vinociped’s nine-day Wine and Bike tour. The name says it all — cycling comes second. Traveling north of
Europe’s largest body of freshwater, Lake Balaton, there is no emphasis on speed. However, there are a couple of things you should consider. Let’s start with the two staples of a decent day in Hungary. Naturally, it should involve pork and Palinka. Palinka is a way to forti-
fy yourself before breakfast, lovely for lunch, a great start to dinner and does double-duty as a nightcap. Palinka, at 40 to 50 per cent alcohol, is a uniquely Hungarian plum or apricotbased brandy. To be fair, we weren’t served Palinka at breakfast on this trip. However, we

met Hungarians, young and old, who swore it was the only way to start the day. Which brings us to the other Hungarian specialty: pork, or piggy, as in ... I felt like one. As we’d already discovered by spending a few days in Budapest, Hungary is a carnivore’s dream or an arterial nightmare. There’s nothing like a big plate of sausages served up with a side of ham. You can worry about your heart health when you get home, because while you’re here, your name is Porkahontas. By the fifth day, we’d left behind the beautiful meandering bike path near the lake to head into the Balaton Uplands, and up is the operative word. Because there are 20 of us, it takes awhile to corral everyone and get things happening but it’s nice to have a slow start and the breath to be able to idle along and chat. We cruise through villages made up of families with tractors in their driveways, past fields of golden corn and tree-filled gardens stuffed with fat pears and pudgy figs. Women still wear aprons here. One could only wish they could convince their Speedowearing, ditch-shoveling husbands to don the odd one too. And frankly, older gentlemen wearing only a Speedo whilst cycling is a memory I’d like to delete. No. I take that back. It makes me smile to even write it. Riding on quiet roads lined with shimmering poplars, we hear the birds and distant dogs. The end of August feels like the perfect time for this ride. We’re getting the last blast
of summer’s heat, with temperatures ranging from 29C to 35C, while also enjoying the first turning of the leaves. There’s time to stop and take photos of the endless fields of corn, the yards ringed with hollyhocks, oleander, roses and black-eyed susans and the endless pots of geraniums. Not to mention that the wide, smooth cycling path is dedicated to — wait for it — cyclists. Considering it’s been only 20 years since the end of the communist regime, things have progressed very quickly. Still, it’s not all wine and roses. There is no doubt that we have officially left the rolling countryside behind us. These are not extreme hills by any stretch, but the heat adds a new dimension. I amuse myself up the last slow grind by trying to count my body’s various salty tidelines. The road changes to a dusty track and we enter Gergeley Winecellar. Rows of grapevines plunge down from our feet towards the vista of the shimmering expanse of Lake Balaton far, far below. There is a giant’s outdoor oven redolent with smoky smells. Courtyard tables sit next to a small sloping area in deep shade from old apple trees. I want to throw myself under the dappled light of the orchard. But first? Wines await. The sweat chills on my back as we head into the dusty cool smell of rock and the yeasty aroma of fermenting grapes. The tastings are an elixir. Back in the dazzle of the day, we gather around

the outdoor oven as the lid comes off the huge troughlike roasting dish. It reveals whacks of wild pig, gargantuan ham hocks, potatoes, red peppers, carrots, onions and peas basting and mingling to create a savory blend of pork fat heaven. With greasy chins and rounded bellies, some of us step around the old dog snoozing between the tables. Blankets are handed out. I can’t quite believe it ... a bike trip with a naptime. The breeze rustles through the apple leaves. The air is a bouquet. There is the suggestion of apple, a hint of porky smoke, a redolent bottom note of earth; like a wine the gods would make of their finest August day. Yoga can benefit expectant moms p.j. wren
Well on Your Way
D
uring pregnancy, you will want to stay in shape and do what’s best for the baby-to-be. Prenatal yoga is a wonderful way to do both. Tanya Armstrong, owner of Buggy Babies in Ladner, explains that you do not need any yoga experience to practice prenatal yoga. In fact, she believes everyone can benefit from a prenatal yoga practice. Not only does yoga offer the mom-to-be fitness benefits, it also improves their balance, their circulation and it will help to ward off low back pain (a common complaint with expectant mothers). Yoga also teaches you how to breath deeply, which in turn relaxes you. And let’s face it, this will definitely come in handy while in labour. Armstrong offers these fitness tips to new moms-to-be when starting out with a yoga class:
• First off, it is important you get your doctor’s clearance, especially if yoga is completely new to you. • Listen to your constantly changing body. Never do anything that doesn’t feel good for you. • Do not overstretch in any posture. When pregnant the body releases a hormone called relaxin that is needed to allow the hips and ligaments around the pelvic structure to stretch to accommodate the upcoming birth. But this also leaves you at risk to stretch beyond your normal range of motion, which could cause permanent damage. So go into each posture slowly and with ease. • Seek out an instructor who is specially trained in prenatal yoga. • After the second trimester, avoid lying flat on your back for long periods of time as you will want to keep the blood flowing properly to your uterus. • During the third trimester be careful of balance issues now that your belly is bigger. Perform poses near a wall, or seated, to avoid injury to yourself or your baby. Try these yoga poses Armstrong performs in her classes and walk away feeling relaxed,

Warrior 2 Pose
Supported Child’s Pose This posture may help relieve backache and allow the baby to move into a more optimal birthing position during labour. This is also an excellent posture to receive massages (hint, hint all dads-to-be). • Kneel on pillows, or a bed, with wide knees (about a mat width apart). • Rest your head, arms and
chest on the pillows, making sure you’re comfortable — you need to be able to “let go” and relax. Warrior 2 • Begin with your feet hipwidth apart, turning your right foot about 90 degrees and bending the right knee so that it is over the ankle. • Your left leg stays engaged, with shoulders over your hips, wrists lined up with your shoulders and your gaze just beyond your right hand. • Armstrong likes to tell her participants, “There is no more powerful a warrior than a woman giving birth.” Thank you to Tanya Armstrong for her assistance with this column, especially since I know very little about yoga and even less about babies! baby. You can also try chanting ‘om’ before you start circling to signal the start of your yoga practice. At around 20 weeks your baby will be able to hear and feel the vibration of your voice. • Sit on a yoga block, or pillow, cross-legged, resting your hands on your belly. • Circle your pelvis/shoulders/ belly in a slow, circular motion. • As you round the spine, imagine giving your baby a big hug by drawing the belly button in towards the spine. • Do as many as you need in both directions, but if one way feels better stick with that. • Tip: the rocking movement may speed up labour. This posture can also be done seated on a birthing ball.

urnaby author Mary Barr will be at Black Bond Books in Ladner for a book signing next Saturday. She’ll be bringing a pair of her latest children’s books, the newest being The Trouble with Filly Tucker. The story is about a 10year-old girl who happens to be a witch. She “doesn’t practice her spells like she should and that ends up getting her in a lot of strife,” said Barr, adding the title will be the first in a Filly Tucker series. The second book, The Ditch Dog The Hedge Cat, includes two separate stories. One is about a stray dog while the other features a cat that wanders away from home. “They’re fast paced and fast moving and there’s a lot of adventure in them,” said Barr. She published the books through iUniverse, a selfpublishing company. While Barr said she’s been writing for nearly four decades, she started writing children’s books about seven years ago.

Author Mary Barr will be in Ladner next Saturday.
“I found it was a great balance to the murder mysteries ... the big 600- or 700-page adult books.” Barr said writing has been her passion for many years. “I feel and I know every single one of my characters,” she said. “I think that’s the most important thing if you’re going to write visually, you’ve got to understand your characters as people.” Barr will be at Black Bond Books at Trenant Park Square in Ladner from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. next Saturday. Visit her website at mary-barr.com for more information.

Sun Devils have their eyes on the big prize
With national team players and university prospects this might be South Delta’s best chance to win its first B.C. title MARK BOOTH
Even the typically subdued Neil McLennan is having a hard time buoying his enthusiasm about the season ahead for the South Delta Sun Devils. The longtime coach of the senior girls field hockey team is not one to toot his own horn about his program’s tremendous success over the years. Nor is he one to suggest a provincial championship is within his girls’ reach. “You know me. At the end of the day it’s how you play and the memories you make. That’s what it’s all about,” he smiled. What McLennan grudgingly admits is this year’s edition might represent the best opportunity to win the program’s first provincial banner. His roster is not only loaded with provincial and regional team players but some of
the top high school players in the country. South Delta opened its league schedule Tuesday by toying with the Seaquam Seahawks in a lopsided victory. A practice session would have certainly provided a greater challenge and that was without Grade 12 standout Sara McManus who was training with the senior national women’s team. She already has two international caps to her credit. Sun Devil teammates Shannon Herold and Emma Mackie are on the short list to make the Canadian junior team. Herold also has spent time with the senior national program and has U.S. schools lining up for her services. “It’s kind of exciting with the level and caliber of this team,” understated McLennan. “We have six Grade 12s and seven Grade 11s and this is a mature team that has traveled internationally
together. “They know each other really well and it’s an opportunity for them to decide if they want to push themselves to the top of the heap. The potential is definitely there to challenge the top teams in the province.” The Sun Devils will get their first taste of elite competition this weekend where they will look to defend their title at the John Ferreira Cup in Duncan. It’s then off to UBC the following weekend, before participating in the 73rd edition of the Bridgman Cup in Victoria. McManus and Herold were key contributors in Grade 10 when the Devils made an unexpected run to the provincial title game. Despite their bright futures and involvement with other teams, delivering SDSS its first-ever title is a high priority. “I’m really excited for it,” said

Tournament organizers have already put in a request to move the evaluation dates. “It’s unfortunate some of my Grade 12s might be in that position after playing for me the last four or five years then can’t make their last ever tournament,” said McLennan. “(Right now) I’m not sure who even will be invited or what other schools will be effected by it. You just never know what’s going to happen.” It’s one of the reasons McLennan makes sure all 16 players will see quality playing time against all levels of competition, including promising Grade 9 Samantha Redmond. “These are all good athletes and smart players,” added McLennan. “I’m comfortable putting all them out there in any situation.” Perhaps even a provincial championship game.

Herold. “I think we have a really good shot here to win it all and we want to go for it. “It’s going to take lots of hard work and preparation. We have a great mix and we keep getting stronger every year.” McLennan admits this group is good enough to play a more complexed system and prepare a number of them for what they might see at the university level. Still, there is no certainty the Devils will even be in a position to be on the provincial podium come November in Victoria. Last year’s playoff run, took a hit when McManus and Herold were invited to the senior national team selection camp during the week as the tournament and had little gas in the tank. Trouble might loom again this season with the national team carding camp scheduled at the same time as the provincials.

Dolphins star wins monthly swim award
An outstanding summer of swimming has earned Winskill Dolphins standout Noemie Thomas Swimming Canada’s Team Aquatic Supplies Female Athlete of the Month Award. Training under the guidance of coach Tom Rushton, 10 times a week at the Winskill Aquatic Centre, has certainly seen some results for this Grade 9 student at McMath secondary school. She holds a number of provincial records and is currently the 11-12 and 13-14 Girls Canadian record holder for the 100 metre butterfly. The 14-year-old was a member of the Canadian Prospects Team which competed at the Montreal Canada Cup where she was a finalist in 50, 100, and 200 metre butterfly events. She also helped to win a silver medal in the women’s 4x100 medley relay. Thomas was also selected to compete at the North American Challenge Cup but ended up swimming up to the Junior Pan Pacific Championships where she was the youngest member of the team. It was at the Jr. Pan Pacs where she swam her personal best time of 1:00.20 in the 100 fly, and claimed the new national record for 13-and-14-yearold girls. It was this performance in Kihei, Maui that resulted the monthly award.

Delta Ice Hawks made it three straight wins Tuesday with a 6-1 triumph against the visiting Abbotsford Pilots. They host Mission on Tuesday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Delta Ice Hawks are beginning to show signs of being the same team that made last season’s run to the Pacific International Junior Hockey League championship series. The Hawks picked up their third straight win Tuesday night — cruising past the visiting Abbotsford Pilots 6-1 to improve to 3-1-1 on the season. The team has added to their depth with the signings of fowards Jamus Lane and Mitchell Pacey. Both have wasted little time in making an impact. Lane, an 18-year-old South Delta Minor alumni who played in the B.C. Hockey League last season with Surrey, had a goal and an assist. Pacey also added a goal and is expected to provide a physical presence.
The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder led the BCHL’s Langley Chiefs in penalty minutes last season. Delta trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes but dominated the rest of the way. Second period goals from Cody Fidgett, Cody Smith, Pacey and Lane proved to be more than enough as Doug Birks picked up his third win in as many starts, making 27 saves. Smith’s second of the night and Cody Botterill rounded out the scoring. Spencer Traher and Ryan Cuthbert each chipped in with a pair of assists. The Ice Hawks were slated to visit Ridge Meadows last night and host the Mission Icebreakers on Tuesday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

A Time To Remember
PARKINSON Richard Eric (Rick) Dec. 19, 1920 – Sept. 7, 2010 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our Father and Grandfather. Rick passed away peacefully in his sleep at Delta Hospital. He was 89 years old. Rick was a Certified Orthotist and owner for many years of Hodgson Orthotics where he had a passion for helping people in need. He will also be remembered by many for his love of Square Dancing and summers at Anglemont on Shuswap Lake. Rick is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances, sons Gerald Eric (Anita) and Kenneth Earl (Mary) and seven grandchildren Steven, Michael, James, David, Laura, Jennifer, and Kyle, and his brother Garth. Grandad was very proud of his children and all his grandchildren. He will be sadly missed. The family extends our deep appreciation for the care and compassion shown by the nurses and staff at the Waterford Care Center. Expressions of sympathy can be sent to gerryparkinson@gmail.com.

Too much to do, not enough time? ... I can help!
604-878-5232 SINCE 1997
Cancer June 21-July 22: This week and the next few, settle into family, property, security, retirement prospects, Mother Nature, soul, the basics of your life and business. Despite this accent on home and soul – or perhaps due to it – romance wanders into your life (more like strolls, for it seems pretty intent) – if not now, then soon. (The influence lasts to next January.) If you’re happily married, the same influence enlivens and brings success to your dealings with children and/or creative projects. Hopes, optimism, social delights early week. Retreat Tuesday/Wednesday. Your energy returns Thursday onward. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The weeks ahead are generally easy, without “high stakes” pressure. But you’ll be busy – a flurry of travel, paperwork, details, errands and communications arrives. You might change homes, or renovate/decorate. This (or some other domestic adjustment) brings strife and affection – the strife lasts only through October, the affection through December. (Which hints at a splendid outcome.) You might sign legal papers involving property. Be ambitious Sunday/Monday. Social delights, wish fulfilment, light romance visit you midweek! Retreat, live cautiously Thursday/Friday. You shine Saturday! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Chase money, buy and sell, seek new clients or a pay raise during the next few weeks. Money isn’t easy for you to earn now through October 2012, but it can increase through creativity, art/beauty, judicious speculation/risk, pleasure fields such as vacation, recreation, camping, etc., and “indulging children” (e.g., toys, kids’ fashions). You might be busy chasing after or talking to a romantic/ sexual interest this autumn/winter – if you keep it light, you’ll succeed. Sunday/Monday are mellow, tickle your romantic antennae. Be ambitious midweek. Caution Thursday, joy Friday!

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: The weeks ahead feature relationships, opportunities and opposition, relocation, contracts, negotiations, litigation, agreements. In general, others will have the upper hand, so diplomacy/compromise is your protection, and eagerness to join is your opportunity. Your sexual side works overtime (right through December, but most strongly through late October) – excitement, attraction are certain, but don’t overstep social boundaries. True love could occur! Financial partnerships, agreements and investments that arise will grow to a November climax. Chase romance Saturday p.m. Taurus April 20-May 20: Work and health concerns fill the weeks ahead. Your drudgery will be amply relieved, though, by an unusual run of exciting meetings, attractions and exotic temptations. One particularly intriguing person, adventure or opportunity will “stick with you” right into early 2011. Still, don’t neglect chores. Your energy and charisma get a nice boost Sunday/Monday – Sunday could trigger one of those exotic attractions! Chase money Tuesday (easy, stable) and Wednesday (minor glitches). Communications, paperwork, errands irk you Thursday, succeed with ease Friday. Home, kids bless Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: Lie low Sunday/Monday: contemplate, plan for the future, attend to duties. Be charitable, spiritual. Your energy and charisma surge back Tuesday/Wednesday – romance is a definite possibility, if you chase it. Three factors characterize romance until October 2012: one, your affections mingle deeply and successfully with sexual and financial currents; two, there might be an age difference. Three, romance will be slow to develop, perhaps because others doubt your loyalty. (Or find you too old or young). You’ll have to “prove” your love. Money caution Thursday, luck Friday.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness reach a yearly peak now, Libra – charge ahead, insist on your way, start important new ventures or give a strong heave to ones that you need to complete. You’ll attract attention, but in a quiet way. Money will flow swiftly to you through late October, but you’ll be tempted to spend carelessly, especially with a partner, or in an attempt to attract a person or opportunity – slow down! Wait until November/December, when you’ll spend more wisely, and luckily. Sexy stuff Sunday/Monday. Love, wisdom midweek. Don’t push higher-ups Thursday. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: You’re weary but your sexual, partnership and romantic magnetism rises. Is that a good thing? Who knows? A moderate approach is best: don’t overwork, and keep your intimate clinches honest. Don’t embrace anyone you suspect could become a burden in future. (You hardly need this advice, anyway.) You face heavy travel, paperwork or communication duties now to late 2012. Ah, well, grin and bear it. Sunday/Monday spark an attraction: show humour! Intimate temptations come Tuesday (good) and Wednesday (iffy to suppertime, good late night). Careful (legally, ethically) Thursday. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Entertainment, light romance (heavy stuff would burden you in future) popularity, optimism and happiness – these pay a month-long visit! You might be held back by a nagging health problem (related to sugar?). This health influence lasts to January 2011, so take care of it now. If nothing “shows up” Sunday/Monday or Thursday, you’re fine. Tackle chores early week. Exciting meetings or opportunities arise Tuesday/ Wednesday – say Yes – don’t insist that it be “your way.” Be careful with finances, health, intimacy, commitments Thursday (Friday’s lucky here). Gentle love, joy Saturday.

Sept. 26 - Oct. 2 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Be on your toes – ambitions rise, and so do pressures to perform. The accent is on prestige relations, dealings with higherups. Your social side grows active – a light romance might be brewing. Be alert, though – don’t let an attraction interfere with (or smudge) your ambitions or reputation. Sunday/Monday are romantic, creative. Tackle chores Tuesday/Wednesday. (Tuesday best – get an early start.) Be cautious in relationships Thursday – agree to nothing, but alienate no one. Friday offers success in the same zone. Saturday starts a weekend of mystery, desire, investigation. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: A gentle, philosophical, loving mood comes upon you for a few weeks. Intellectual, legal, educational, cultural, religious, fartravel and international involvements are favoured. If you started an “angry communication” in 2009, it can be solved now. You might be surprised to find that you’re loved – or not! Bosses, parents and other “high-ups” continue to treat you with impatience and affection: maintain humour and you’ll maintain the affection. (The impatience will fade before November; the affection lasts to 2011.) Home, family Sunday/ Monday. Romance midweek. Caution Thursday! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Mysteries and investigation, subconscious urges, lust, large finances, lifestyle changes, commitments and consequences fill the weeks ahead. Be careful with legal, cultural and ethical zones – your impatience to get things done could stir up costly antagonism. (Despite this, these areas, as well as international travel and higher education, yield rewards right into January.) Tackle errands, paperwork – and meet a sweet friend – Sunday/Monday. Be domestic, restful Tuesday/Wednesday. Romance and speculation call you Thursday, but need much caution – try these Friday instead. Chores Saturday. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
