Jill Foster, a longtime OWL (Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society) volunteer, released a young eagle back into the wild Saturday eight weeks after it fell from its nest at the Westham Island Bridge. The eagle was rescued by the Bates family, who own a farm near the nesting site, after it was found under their truck on July 3. OWL volunteers had attempted to rescue the eagle, which had not had any food or water for four days during a heat wave, earlier that day but could not find the barely fledged bird. The bird, who was named McIvor, was captured by Vancouver SPCA and then turned over to OWL. After two months of recovering at the East Ladner facility, McIvor was released back into the wild within sight of the nest where it hatched. Members of the Bates family were present for the release.

There was hardly a mention about the Southlands as council endorsed the proposed new Tsawwassen Area Plan moving to the public hearing stage. On Monday, the civic politicians agreed to send the draft area plan back to staff, which will come up with a bylaw that’s tentatively scheduled to go to a public hearing Oct. 26. The new area plan calls for modest growth, explained community planning director Tom Leathem. Some elements in the new plan that council may end up changing, based on their discussion this week, included the proposed four-storey height limit for buildings in the town centre. Several council members noted it would leave no incentive for property owners to redevelop. Coun. Anne Peterson described the limit as “a waste of vertical real estate.” Another issue was the proposed height limit for homes in Beach Grove and Boundary Bay. The idea of retaining a slightly higher limit for properties fronting the beach didn’t sit well with councillors. Coun. Bruce McDonald noted the height issue should be examined for Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta as a whole. The proposal to designate the power line corridor as a potential townhouse area was also discussed. Coun. Anne Peterson wanted to remove that provision but her motion was rejected. Coun. Heather King said she’d support such a designation if it meant a developer would have enough financial incentive to bury the power lines. The new area plan calls for the designation of the Southlands property to be maintained as agricultural. McDonald started off the area plan discussion by reading a statement expressing his disappointment that members of the Tsawwassen Area Plan Committee, which he chaired, were accused of being bias. He said there was a “win or lose” attitude by some in the community who also attacked staff. The bylaw will come to council for first and second reading Sept. 13.

Delta Hospice Society executive director Nancy Macey and volunteer Patrick Lobsinger meet in the lounge area of the Harold & Veronica Savage Centre for Supportive Care, which opened in Ladner earlier this year along with the Irene Thomas Hospice.

Hospice offers comfort and care BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

It’s been more than they could have imagined but even more is possible when their fundraising is complete. That’s what Nancy Macey says while assessing the new Delta Hospice Society care centre and the resident care building which opened earlier this year in Ladner. It took years of dedication and hard work by the executive director and others with the volunteer organization to finally see their dream of a new and enhanced care model to assist those facing life-threatening illnesses and their families come to fruition. An $8.5 million project, the Harold & Veronica Savage Centre for Supportive Care and the adjacent Irene Thomas Hospice, located on Clarence Taylor Crescent adjacent to Delta Hospital, was built entirely thanks to the donations. The Fraser Health Authority provided the land and operating dollars are provided for the 10-bed palliative care unit, but it’s still up to the society to fund the operations of supportive care centre, which provides information, counseling and acts as an allaround resource base for families. Macey was interviewed at the grounds of the new centre last week and also on hand were employees Dalyce Wickett and

Catherine Andrews, as well as longtime volunteer Patrick Lobsinger. “Towards the end, so frequently, people end up in hospital but so few hospitals are really geared to take care of them,” said Lobsinger, who has been helping a male patient at the hospice deal with end-of-life issues. Lobsinger said he heard the centre described as an “acute, comfort, care” facility. According to the society, this past year the Centre for Supportive Care received more than 14,000 phone calls and visits. After opening this February, the Irene Thomas Hospice has accommodated more than 70 patients as well as their loved ones. Andrews said the hospice residence gives families a chance to be a family again and care for each other. “They can say things that need to be said and to spend quality time with the person who’s dying, because often times they’ve been struggling to care for them at home or care for them at hospital under difficult conditions. Coming here means the care team can care for those needs,” said Andrews. Macey agreed, saying, “One of the things with having this new project, I realize now, we have specialists who support families, like medical specialists. That’s been such an important thing for people when they have to be hospitalized or have to have care out-

side of the home. The setting is also a more appropriate place for families.” Macey said the counselors at the supportive care centre provide a segue into all the care that’s available, whether someone with a life-threatening illness is still at home or requires a hospice bed, so they can get the right care at the right time at the right place. “So often when people are in the community and have a diagnoses or are very ill, they don’t know what’s available,” she said. Andrews noted community health nurses do a good job in helping people with serious illnesses stay at home for as long as possible. “Often times we become partners with the community health nurses and families at a much later stage in their journey than in other communities. Sometimes the families that come to us from our own community stay quite a short time, which is a very appropriate use of this resource because what it means is it’s connected to the way the community is already doing business,” said Andrews. The hospice society’s thrift store in Tsawwassen provides a majority of the funding to operate the supportive care centre. “What’s important for people to know about that is what the thrift store means is that the society can be responsive to the

things this community needs, it’s not dictated by anyone else,” Andrews said. Macey noted that in addition to its support services, the supportive care also started an early Alzheimer’s group, a caregiver’s group, a bereavement walking group and a relaxation group. The society is also hoping to start a pain and symptom management clinic. However, the biggest challenge the society still faces is that the fundraising goal is not yet complete. About $900,000 is still needed, said Macey, noting community groups and individuals are continuing to help out. “There’s a lot of support but when you have $900,000, it’s a big final piece, so it is a challenge how we go forward. That eats up funds we can be putting into service,” she said. An unusual challenge, meantime, the staff at the centre face has been from bunnies, which are overrunning the grounds due to being displaced by the construction of the new gymnastics facility across the street. Macey noted some of the rabbits have begun burrowing into the foundation of the buildings, which will require $20,000 to refit to prevent the critters from causing any further damage. For more information or to make a donation to the Delta Hospice Society visit www.deltahospice.org or call 604-9480660.

Complaints prompt revamp of new Ladner sign BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

The new municipal sign letting motorists know they’re entering Ladner is going to change following complainants about the recently installed structure. Delta council this week approved a staff recommen-

dation to come back with a report detailing a proposed addition to the silver coloured sign that replaced the decades-old wooden sign on Ladner Trunk Road. Delta replaced several signs throughout the municipality using tourism grant money from the province, but CAO George Harvie

said that while most comments were positive about the signs, there’s been a high degree of dissatisfaction with the Ladner signage. It replaced an old sign that depicted a heron. Saying the new sign didn’t quite fit, parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz noted the old sign

had to be replaced because it was rotting. However, one idea to bring back a popular element of the old sign is to attach a “sculptural element” to the new sign, he said. Kuntz then showed councillors a sketch of a potential addition to the

new sign, which would have a large metal heron sculpture added to the side, set behind the sign overlooking it. He noted it’s just one possible new look for the structure. He said the addition would have anchors plated onto a concrete base to pre-

vent theft. Council is to get the report at its next meeting in a couple of weeks. Noting her office has received many calls and e-mails about the Ladner sign, Mayor Lois Jackson said she’d like to see whatever changes are made to the sign done soon.

Businessman reaching out to others along river Individuals need to get organized or they risk losing their voice with Port Metro Vancouver, says Mike Owen BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

One local businessman who operates on the Fraser River is hoping to organize others to present a unified voice to the port authority. Residential water lot users, fishers and business owners of small and medium sized companies that work on the Fraser River and Burrard Inlet need to get organized or risk losing their voice with Port Metro Vancouver, said Mike Owen, president of Mike’s Marine Services Ltd. in Ladner. Owen is a member of the General Commercial User

Group, which is made up of a number of local business owners and water lot users in the area. The group collates input from residential and small and medium sized commercial port users and communicates that information back to its members and the port authority, as well as submitting names to be considered for the port authority’s board of directors. Owen said there used to be separate groups for each port authority – Vancouver, North Fraser and Fraser River – however after the three merged into Port Metro Vancouver (PMV),

the groups in some areas seem to have fallen by the wayside. Owen is reaching out to water lot users and businesses along the river to “see if there is a need and a willingness to organize.” He said the merger produced a myriad of small and medium sized users spread along the port’s 600 kilometres of shoreline with no effective contact list or means of collectively communicating with the port authority or each other. “The general commercial users need to be well organized to engage the port authority, communicate their concerns and provide

nominees for consideration to the board,” Owen said. “The large commercial users, like terminal and rail, clearly have a voice,” he said. “The general commercial users are the most populous, yet lack effective organization and that is hurting us.” Owen, along with a core group, represented general commercial group interests on the Fraser River for nine years before the merger. He is now seeking to unify all the users across that port’s 600 kilometres of shoreline, including Burrard Inlet. “Now that there is a new merged port, if we want

to be heard, have a say in port governance, or even be kept informed about what’s going on in the port that might effect our businesses or residences, it is incumbent upon us to get organized,” he said. “We can’t sit back and just hope someone will do it for us.” An annual meeting for the General Commercial User Group is in the works for this fall. Owen is encouraging all individual persons, small and medium sized companies working in the PMV jurisdiction, and holding a water lot lease or permit, to contact him by e-mail at

Mike Owen Organization needed mikesmarine@dccnet.com, or by fax at 604-940-9747, to ensure their contact information is added to the group’s database.

Recent Pirate Pak Day at White Spot helps Zajac Ranch for Children dedicated to giving children with life-threatening illnesses and chronic disabilities a chance to enjoy the experience of going to summer camp. “We are absolutely thrilled with the contribution from White Spot,” said

Mel Zajac, founder of Zajac Ranch for Children. “We want to thank everyone who took part in Pirate Pak Day. Because of you, so many children’s lives will be enriched through our camp program.” *** M&M Meat Shops across the country are inviting Canadians to gather with friends and family on Sept. 16 to celebrate the sixth annual National Family Dinner Night. National Family Dinner Night celebrates spending quality time with family and friends. The importance of family dinners reaches beyond

simply sharing a meal. Research has shown that gathering around the table presents a valuable opportunity to interact, strengthen relationships and affirm the

briefs value of every individual in the family and their role in the community. For every resident that registers a pledge to participate in National Family Diner Night at www. nationalfamilydinnernight. com, M&M Meat Shops will make a $1 donation

to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada, up to $100,000. *** Employees from one local company are giving up their locks for a good cause. On Sept. 2, several employees from the Century Group maintenance department will shave, buzz or trim their hair to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. The employees have been collecting donations and will face the shears at Figaro Hair Design in the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2.

Fire fundraiser back on Briefly cancelled, today’s event to help blaze victims

The fundraiser to benefit the victims of July’s fire on Evergreen Lane is back on. The event, which is scheduled to run from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Kirkland House in Ladner, was briefly cancelled by the original organizer before being taken on by another. The fundraiser will include a barbecue, silent auction, 50/50 draw, as well as DJ entertainment. The blaze started at about 7 p.m. on July 30 at a two-storey apartment complex in the 4600-block of Evergreen Lane. More than 20 of the 66 suites in the complex were damaged in the fire and 22 residents were displaced. In the aftermath of the fire, the community has rallied to help the victims. Deltassist and the Salvation Army have been inundated with donations. The Delta Firefighters Charitable Society collected financial donations for two weeks after the fire.

MURPHY’S LAW Tired of our usual bike ride to Deas Island Regional Park via the Millennium Trail, we went in search of something new. I had been told you can get out to Wellington Point Park by using the dike along River Road West, so I thought I’d give it a shot, with my wife and son along in our recent convoy. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with the extended Millennium Trail, which has become a great addition to the biking network, but there’s only so many times in a row you want to see the same scenery. Picking up the dike at the edge of the village, I have to say the river views are fleeting at best, but it does provide an opportunity to stay safely above the traffic that speeds along just below. Often times it’s hard to tell it’s a public right-of-way as the path cuts through the front of several industrial operations and other various driveways and, thanks to some overgrown bushes, narrows to the point where you can’t pedal side-by-side, but it did allow us to get closer to our final destination and take in some different scenery in the process. When we reached Mike Owen’s marina my wife was taken by the sudden improvements to the path. The former Citizen of the Year has done it up the right way, adding lighting, nautical artifacts and flowers to make that portion a more pleasurable ride. Once you get beyond Owen’s property line, however, the path comes to an abrupt end. It’s only another few hundred metres more to reach Wellington Point, but to do so we had to venture onto the road. Traffic was light enough it wasn’t an issue, but I’ve driven that stretch enough times to know that’s not always the case. Not wanting to push our luck, we retraced our steps, but the next day took the car out there to survey the situation. Not only is it necessary to complete the path to Wellington, but with a bit of effort there’s an opportunity to continue it well beyond that point. It appears, thanks to wide shoulders and existing greenbelts, it would be possible to take it past the Westham Island Bridge turn off and link it with the dike path that begins (or ends if you’re coming the other way) just beyond the float homes at Canoe Pass. Doing so would create a fabulous amenity, a trail that would stretch all the way from Ladner Village (or Deas Island with a little extra work) to Roberts Bank. The vast majority of that network is already in place, so it wouldn’t take too much on the part of the municipality to complete the project.

Today’s children need more unplanned time and places to play DEBBIE McBRIDE

COMMUNITY COMMENT Have you ever marveled when children prefer to play with the box the toy comes in to the toy? I’ve been reminded of that anew with the arrival of grandchildren. Like any grandparent I want them to have fun when they see me and so I dutifully go to the store to make their every dream come true. I’ve come to notice though, that while they love, of course, those doodads and things that flash and make noise, they usually go back to loving the simplest of things. Paints, paper, glue, a pair of scissors and they are happy to create whatever they see in their minds. Never mind that sometimes they need to tell us what it is, they know. My grandson and I can hap-

pily while away a couple of hours with play dough and I have been amazed at how many things can be made from that simple little hunk of dough. We’re at the end of summer and for me it’s always been a melancholy time as schedules return and the daylight hours get shorter. For today’s children it’s a return to yet more schedules, including play dates. Is it just me who thinks a child having a play date is an oxymoron? Oh, I know we need to schedule time for learning and dentist appointments but can’t we sometimes just let children have time to explore life free of facts, figure and organized sports? We need to let them play with a box and let that box become whatever they want it to be. A car, a castle or something in their mind only they can imagine and see. I’ve been reading a fascinating book by Richard Louv called Last Child in the Woods and it’s a book that every adult, especially community planners, should read. It was written to draw our attention to what is happening to the natural world and how it relates to

our children’s sense of wellbeing now and in the future. While it’s intent is to educate us as to how we’ve taken the really natural world away from our children it also shows us how our well intentioned methods of manicured lawns and play parks are robbing the future generation of the ability to think, if you’ll pardon the pun, outside the box. Most inventors and free thinkers grew up without the “advantages” of the structured modern world and were left free to explore their natural environment. All the great innovators are those who spent much of their childhood playing in untended fields and forests. Research is proving what past generations have always understood, we need to go outside and play. They have also realized that when children go outside and play they need a natural place that is unstructured and allows them and their imaginations to run free. So as we go about planning our children’s every waking moment, let’s plan for them to have time to just mess around and also plan for natural places to do just that.

coming the next night to watch the movie. The other two nights were incredible with over 1,000 people watching the shows each night. The most rewarding part of hosting these events is watching friends and neighbours, families and kids of all ages enjoy an evening at the park or at the block party. Many people don’t know that our events are unique in that we feature pre-movie festivals. Most communities just invite

people to join once the sunsets and simply present the movie. At our events, we go to great lengths to feature many businesses and groups from our community in various ways including: opportunities to raise important funds and awareness of many non-profit groups, to showcase local and upcoming talent in the arts with music, sports and dance presentations and to sample a variety of products and services through interaction with the public or

through ads and “trivia” on the big screen. We invite all who attended to send us comments, feedback, photos and ideas for next year’s events. You can e-mail us at biaoffice@ shoptsawwassen.com or post them on our Facebook group Shop Tsawwassen. Photos of the event can be seen on the BIA website at www.shoptsawwassen.com. How about an add-on to the new Ladner welcome sign? Editor: As a part-time members of the community (due to traffic congestion and working in Vancouver) for the past 38 years, Ladner has been a living organism away from the big centers and has been home. The hellos and smiles of people have not been lost here and

of the most part the people are still considered one of its most important assets. One of the fingerlings of that asset is the ability of people to express themselves in a healthy way and then get on with the business at hand. We’ve all read and heard the criticisms about the loss

of the heron signage at the entrance to Ladner — I for one agree that much thought didn’t happen when the new one was installed (whatever the reasoning behind it). However, it is what it is — but it doesn’t have to be left the way it is. Would it not be good if a local artist was to design

a metal silhouette of farming/fishing/wildlife/tourism imagery (or whatever else to represent the community) that could be bolted to the top of the current bland signage of the land, sea to sky colouring? Common Ladnerites — get your thinking caps on. M.D. (Merv) Jones

New welcome sign isn’t as bad as info reader board Editor: While I see the topic of the heron sign is starting to resemble a dead horse, and I agree with that horrible generic sign, being well, horrible I have another idea to put forth. Worse than the new sign to me is the large mall-like entrance mechanical sign set against a background of chain link fence that first greets all driving by or entering Ladner.

I’m sure we are able to get community information in a much less ugly and invasive way, say the Optimist for one. How about placing an artistically pleasing sign and sculpture with say a bit of colourful greenery, quaint but modern. Do you see what I’m getting at city hall? I am getting a glimpse into the future of the new waterfront project, oh boy. Kim Brennan

Ah, Grade 5. That’s where I’d like to be heading next week. This is not to say I am not happy where I am, which is a heck of a distance past high school. But let’s just say I could get inside a time machine. Let’s just say I could return to school — at whichever grade I chose. It wouldn’t be to kindergarten: too much of that blasted separation anxiety. It wouldn’t be to Grade 12: too many nasty provincial exams. It would be to the world of the 10-year-old. Glorious Grade 5. I would head off with what I took, let’s just say, more than a couple of decades ago. New red shoes. A tartan skirt. A cardigan, made by my mother. Oh, and the sweetest zippered handbag. In Grade 5, I had made the move. I had left all that childish primary world behind me. The finger paints. The plasticine. Dick and Jane. A dog called Spot and a cat called Puff. I had entered a new world, a place where the focus was on sophisticated stuff. You know, like the MacLean Method of Handwriting. And times tables. And science experiments. We no longer listened to our teachers tell us stories about mice that talked and cats that had magical powers. We were big kids. We went to the library and picked out our own books, and we read them during

silent reading. We were neither here nor there, but we were in the best place imaginable. High school was light years away. Grade 2 was decades in the past. Still, I had the handbag. It contained neither crayons nor lipstick, but things I might have found useful. A ballpoint pen. A scratchpad. A little pack of tissues. Perhaps a total of 50 cents.

I had entered a new world, a place where the focus was on sophisticated stuff. You know, like the MacLean Method of Handwriting. And times tables. And science experiments. I ventured off into Grade 5, feeling on top of the world. I wasn’t a kid. I wasn’t a teenager. I was what they called a tween — long before they’d invented the word. Glorious Grade 5. We looked at each other, we newbie fifth graders, and smiled. We were smug. We knew, I suspect, what fifth graders know everywhere: that the silliness was behind us, and that there was silliness ahead. We were in a plateau. We were in a place where lip gloss was optional, but not mandatory, where hopscotch was still acceptable, but not required. We were children, and we were not children, but we were the happiest people alive. I won’t experience Grade 5 again. But I hope all you 10-year-olds love it.

World of the 10-year-old a fun one

Optimist contributor

It’s no secret that Delta is a haven for migratory waterfowl. Each fall we witness the arrival of hundreds of thousands of ducks, geese, and swans to our area, an annual natural event that has earned Delta the label of Canada’s most significant Important Bird Area. These birds feed in a variety of habitats, including foreshore tidal marshes and on farmland. The winter cover crop program, one of six stewardship programs offered to local farmers by Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust, helps to share the cost of establishing cover crops in late summer. The cover crops, which are usually cereal grasses like barley, oats, or wheat, provide feeding habitat for waterfowl and also protect the soil from winter rains and provide green manure that can be ploughed in to improve soil structure. Each year local farmers plant an average of 3,000 acres of cover crops across Delta. Cover crops and other farm fields provide places for waterfowl to feed but ensuring that there is enough habitat to support waterfowl in a landscape that is becoming more developed each year is not easy. Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust recently conducted a study of winter

cover crops to determine how we can increase the habitat value of cover crops for waterfowl. It is important to understand that cover crops vary dramatically depending on their growth stage or what type is planted. For instance, barley and oat cover crops will die-off during mid-winter because they cannot tolerate frost, whereas winter wheat will thrive in the cold. Winter wheat planted at the end of August will establish a much greater amount of biomass compared to a field planted towards the end of September, simply because it has longer to grow. With these details in mind, DFWT biologists worked with local farmers to determine exactly how many waterfowl were supported by the different cover crop management techniques. Once a week biologists visited a variety of fields and counted up the most tell-tale signs of waterfowl: fecal pellets. Anyone who has seen a sports field grazed by Canada Geese knows that fecal pellets are hard to miss and it turns out that they are a reliable indicator of how many birds have used a field. We found that winter wheat cover crops planted in late August and early September supported the greatest densities of waterfowl. And as we expected, barley and oat cover crops

supported far fewer waterfowl because they died off during the winter. With this information, we have restructured the cover crop program and are paying farmers more for winter wheat cover crops, especially those that are planted before the end of August. By encouraging farmers to plant winter wheat instead of barley and oats, we can increase the carrying capacity of cover crops eightfold! That in itself is a positive contribution to conservation. The agricultural practices of the past half century have been one of the most significant contributors to biodiversity loss. Ironically, farming is now one of the only human industries that can help to conserve what is left. Planting cover crops is an example of cooperative stewardship that not only conserves wildlife but maintains our valuable and finite soil resources (which there isn’t a lot of in B.C.). It is important to recognize that farming in Delta faces a unique set of challenges, including rising production costs, loss of markets for vegetables, pressure from development, and even over grazing of hay and grass by waterfowl. Despite this, local farmers continue to work with DFWT to conserve our wildlife resources. A copy of our research report is available online at www.deltafarmland.ca.

Local group at PNE tattoo Navy centennial event features Delta Police Pipe Band The Canadian Navy Centennial Tattoo at the PNE this Saturday will have some local flavour to it. While groups from England (Her Majesty’s Royal Marines band) and Hawaii (the U.S. Marine Corps band) are lining up to perform, the Delta Police Pipe Band will also be taking part. “The Delta Police Pipe Band is very pleased to be participating in a celebra-

tion of the Canadian Navy’s 100th anniversary,” the group’s website states. There will also be a massed band salute to the Seaforth Highlanders, a Vancouver-based infantry regiment, that’s marking their own 100th anniversary. The Metro Vancouver Navy 2010 Commemorative Society is presenting the event. Ladner’s Bob Juulsen is

treasurer of that society and also the president of the Vancouver Naval Veterans Band, which will be performing at the tattoo as well. Juulsen, who plays baritone horn, served in the Canadian Navy from 1953 to 1981. The tattoo is set for Saturday at 1 and 4 p.m. at the Pacific Coliseum at the PNE. Best friends help B.C. win national title Summer of baseball culminates with Lexie Brenneis and Paige Harbord earning gold at Canadian Bantam tourney MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

Forget about camping or going to the beach. Best friends Lexie Brenneis and Paige Harbord hung out together on Team B.C. this summer winning a national championship. The Ladner teens culminated a memorable month long journey on Sunday night in Richmond as B.C. captured the Canadian Bantam Girls Baseball Championships with a 5-4 win over Ontario. The result completed an unbeaten run for the host province and marked the second time in three years it has finished on top of the podium. At 14, Brenneis and Harbord were the young-

we first started practicing as a team, we didn’t know anybody’s name and we were really kind of nervous. Then we end up right here (winning a championship). All these girls are just amazing.” Brenneis and Harbord have grown up playing among boys in the Ladner Minor Baseball Association. This season, they were teammates in the LMBA’s Bantam House League. Harbord won silver two years ago as a member of Team B.C. at the Canadian Pee Wee Girls Championships. Brenneis was playing for the Ladner all-star program at the time. They both attended Team B.C. tryouts last month and earned spots on the 14-play-

B.C. defeated Ontario 5-4. est girls on the team and still have two more years of eligibility at this level. They are already thinking about repeating in 2011 when the tournament is held in Nova Scotia. “We have been best friends for a long time and to be on this team has been an amazing experience,” smiled Brenneis. “When

er roster. Nothing against their Ladner teammates, but the intensity and caliber of play at the Nationals was unmatched. “Everyone was just way more focused and together as a team,” said Harbord. “It was definitely a better experience than playing boys house ball.” Harbord also plays rep

fastpitch with the Invaders program and will continue to do both in the future. Brenneis has played nothing but baseball. “I’m thinking about switching but I haven’t made up my mind,” she said. “I am very set on baseball. It’s basically my entire life.” Based on her role with Team B.C., there will be plenty of more highlights too. Despite her age and lack of experience at the national level, Brenneis proved to be one of B.C.’s workhorses. She pitched in a 72 semi-final win over Quebec, then got the start against Ontario, working nearly three innings before departing when her pitch count for the day (95) had reached the maximum. She also saw regular duty in right field and hit the ball hard in each of her four plate appearances. She singled in the seventh that led to a pair of valuable insurance runs. She was also robbed of another hit on a spectacular line drive catch by Ontario shortstop Breanne Wilson-Bennett, that led to defensive player of the game honours. Harbord also saw some time in the championship game, coming off the bench in the late going as a pinch runner. The girls will bask in their glory over the next few days before heading their separate ways. Brenneis will be starting Grade 9 at Delta secondary school next week and Harbord is off to Little Flower Academy in Vancouver. “We’re still going to be seeing lots of each other,” promised Brenneis. And there’s always next summer helping B.C. win gold again.

Strong finish earns McPherson Beach Grove Amateur title

The Envision Financial Beach Grove Amateur provided another exciting event as Earl MacPherson came from behind to claim the title. A member at Semiahmoo and Loomis Trail, MacPherson fired a final round of 70 to finish at 2-under (140) and edge first round leader Jerome Cavanagh of Beach Grove and three-time B.C. Senior Men’s Amateur champion Gudmund Lindbjerg of Pitt Meadows by two shots. Dave Otto of Beach Grove fired sizzling rounds of 63 and 66 to outdistance perennial contender Ben Rothfeder of Beach Grove and Bryan Leonhardt to win the overall net prize. It marked the fifth year of the partnership between Envision Financial and the Beach Grove Amateur and each year the tourna-

ment donates to a local beneficiary. This time, $9,000 is being donated to the Boys and Girls Club Community Services of

Delta/Richmond. “Envision Financial has been a tremendous partner over the past five years and without their support the

tournament would not be able to support this very worthy cause in our community,” said Beach Grove head pro Brent Derrheim.

Over the past five years the tournament has donated over $60,000. Many volunteers from the Boys and Girls Club

June 3, 1990 - Sept. 1, 2006

I saw a picture of you yesterday. When I looked at it I walked away. I see myself in you all the time You were there for me, You were my friend, That kind that I always thought would stay. I always think where could you be, I wish I could remember what you told me. When you were around you comforted me when I cried. I’m lost without you, And the day you left, half of me up and died My skies are gray not blue Well what I’m trying to say is that all I do is just miss you ! We sat and laughed, Got mad and cried, That’s why my heart broke when all of a sudden I had to say “Good-bye” The feelings that were there aren’t anymore My mind races everyday trying to make sense of what happened. Before you left I just wanted to say one thing, and that is.. I Love and will miss you! LOVE
