Townhouses a possibility along ROW

More than just a movie!

Scenario made possible after committee votes for provision in new area plan SANDOR GYARMATI

Olivia Boikman, 3, follows the moves of Deas Island Dance performers during the pre-movie Block Party at the Tsawwassen Outdoor Movie Night on Saturday. The controversial hydro rightof-way in Tsawwassen could be lined with new townhouses in the coming years. That scenario was made possible after the Tsawwassen Area Plan Committee last week voted in favour a provision in the new area plan which would see areas designated for future townhouse development. They include the length of the hydro corridor, which made headlines a couple of years ago after homeowners fought the B.C. Transmission Corporation’s installation of new higher voltage power lines. Planner Barry Konkin told the committee townhouses is a form of housing that’s lacking in the community, especially for young families wanting to get in on the housing market. “If the land use designation is in place, it’s a map of potential in the community. No one is compelled to develop townhouses. If no one develops, they don’t have to. What this does is if the market begins to support that type of development people can make an application to council to rezone their properties,” he said. Konkin, saying there’s no timeline on the eventual redevelopment, noted the area plan sees the new residential development

moving from the town centre area outwards. Chair Coun. Bruce McDonald said should the area plan receive approval by council, following a public hearing, the regular rezoning process, which includes a public hearing, still applies. “If there were a development proposal that came forward, two years, three years down the road, council of the day would look at that and in the rezoning process they may say 20 units per hectare is acceptable, they may say they want something less than that,” he said. Planning director Tom Leathem said details about the townhousedesignated areas still have to be worked out and feedback still needs to be gathered from neighbours at the public hearing stage on the area plan. Council is to discuss the new area plan next Monday. B.C. Hydro purchased 104 homes on the power line corridor last year in a buy-out program. Planning to re-sell all the houses over a two- to three-year period, Hydro is marketing the homes as Tsawwassen Heights. Spokesperson Susan Danard told the Optimist last week that 42 homes have already sold and another six are under contract. B.C. Hydro estimates the cost of the buy-out will be about $23 million.

Metro moving on concession plan

If approved, the plan would mean a new concession building for Tsawwassen’s Centennial Beach BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Metro Vancouver is finally moving forward with a plan to replace the aging washroom and concession building at Centennial Beach. A large blue municipal sign was recently erected at the park notifying visitors that the regional district has applied for a development permit for a new building that would be constructed just north of the expanded playground area. The old building is to be demolished. Area parks manager Mitch Sokalski said the new concession building will have change rooms and washrooms, as well as a food concession with some inside seating. “If you want to call it a café, I guess it can be called that. We’re trying to respond to public requests that there be more than just a destination summertime concession. There could be food service for a longer period of time during the colder season,” Sokalski said. Metro Vancouver had been planning to build a new washroom/concession building that would be connected to a new destination-style restaurant on top. However, after about two years, the regional district wasn’t able to find a suitable private partner for the restaurant and the plan has been shelved. Sokalski said it may be possible to add a restaurant to the new building. “We’re still going through that process of how you size a building and engineer a building to convert it to a restaurant in the future. It’s not the easiest thing to engineer and it could be cost prohibitive to engineer the current structure we are proposing,” he said. Sokalski noted an opportunity for a new restaurant could be on the main floor. “The current design, should it get approval from the Corporation of Delta, has an indoor component that is fairly modest in size, but it has a deck around the perimeter of it. So in the summer months you can expand out into that area with picnic tables and umbrellas,” he said. “So maybe in the longer term, if the

FILE PHOTO

Metro Vancouver’s plan for a new concession building at Centennial Beach includes washrooms, changing rooms and extended food service. business opportunity presents itself, maybe you can incorporate some of that as part of the destination restaurant. That could be five, 10, 20 years from now.” Sokalski said a municipal public hearing wouldn’t be required for the application because the application is for a development permit and not a rezoning, although Metro staff will take direction from Delta. “We will certainly as a Metro Vancouver parks department in a future date hold a public information meeting on the project. We want to let the process go through council first before we know what our next steps are in terms on communication with the public,” said Sokalski. He added the plan is for the concession to open next July.

The most recent stumbling block of the project had been the proposed location. The regional district wanted to construct a new building in the gravel parking lot further back from the beach. It would have been on land owned by the district and not Delta, which leases the beach to Metro Vancouver. A working group formed by Metro Vancouver couldn’t come to a consensus on the exact location for a new building. Coun. Robert Campbell, who chairs Delta’s parks and recreation commission, said Metro’s proposed new location is still not ideal. “The commission wanted it closer to the water, possibly further east. Metro resisted that because of the FREMP (Fraser River

Estuary Management Program) issues,” said Campbell. “When they came to the commission, it was right in the parking lot. They had a small subcommittee made up of some community members and they said move it closer to the water. The commission also said get it out of the parking lot, so they moved it out of the parking lot next to the playground,” he said. Campbell noted the project still has to go through a public hearing because the applicant is asking for a variance. “They’re asking for a zero lot line. They’re putting it right where Delta’s property ends and Metro’s begins, so essentially that’s a change in lot line and that has to go to a public hearing.”

Construction projects all ‘on time and on budget’ BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

Delta currently has a number of construction projects under way that must meet a tight deadline, and so far everything is on time and on budget. Chief administrative officer George Harvie gave council an update last week on the status of a number of major infrastructure projects that must be completed by next spring. “I wanted to assure again, council and members of the public, that our projects are on time and on budget,” Harvie told civic politicians. The federal government’s 2009 budget included an accelerated

and expanded infrastructure funding program, the B.C. government agreed to match federal funds and Delta took advantage of the offer. Last year, the Corporation submitted 13 grant applications for nine different projects, as well as a joint application with the Delta Gymnastics Society. Delta was successful in obtaining funding for seven of the projects, plus two other local infrastructure projects have also received funding from alternate sources. In all, the municipality currently has nine different project on the go — all in various phases — and seven of them, the ones funded through

the federal economic stimulus program, must be completed by March 31, 2011. The cost of the projects totals more than $30 million, with Delta’s contribution coming in at about $9 million. In order to keep tabs on the progress of all the projects, a monitoring group has been set up to ensure everything is completed on time and on budget, and council has been receiving monthly reports on the status of the projects. “Everything is looking extremely good for us right now,” Harvie said. The updated information is available on Delta’s website, www. corp.delta.bc.ca.

It was just after 2 a.m. Saturday when a Delta officer attempted to pull over a vehicle on Highway 17 at 52nd Street. The driver refused to co-operate and drove off. The officer did not engage in a pursuit, however the vehicle was located a short distance away in the 1900-block of 52nd Street where it had struck a farm post. “It is believed that two occupants fled from the vehicle,” said Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Council gets updated on HARRIS NURSERY state of forest industry & FLORIST Association CEO urges Delta to look at wood-first policy as well as working to get Canadian wood products into other countries such as China and Japan. “China is a bright spot for us,” he said. Jeffery’s meeting with Delta council during an afternoon session Aug. 16 was part of a larger annual tour. He said he undertakes the tour to update local governments on the industry annually, but usually concentrates on areas where the industry’s presence is more front and centre, such as Port Hardy, Nanaimo and Port Alberni. This year, he said, he wanted to broaden his reach to other communities as well. Delta is home to a number of sawmills and other companies working within the forestry industry. In the face of four years of a downturn in the business, Jeffery is optimistic that the industry will bounce back. “We are a sustainable industry, we are a renewable industry... I’ve been in the business 27 years now...

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

Delta council got an update on the state of forestry in the province last week as the head of the Coast Forest Products Association met with elected officials and municipal staff. The industry has been in a “difficult economic place” over the last four years, association president and CEO Rick Jeffery said. When the sub-prime mortgage crisis hit in 2006 and housing starts in the U.S. dropped significantly, the coastal forestry industry took a pretty big hit, he said. The industry used to send 60 per cent of its products to the U.S. That number has dropped to 45 per cent since 2006 and the association is looking to make up the difference in other markets. Jeffery said Coast Forest Products Association (CFPA) has been working on moving into the commercial marketplace,

we’re certainly an adaptable industry,” he said. Jeffery estimated that it will take another two to three years for the industry to come back to where it was before the downturn. The other goal of his tour this summer was to encourage local governments to adopt a “wood first” policy when it comes to construction of new buildings. Last year, the B.C. government adopted the WoodFirst Policy, which requires all new provincial public buildings to include B.C. wood in construction wherever possible. Since then, the government has encouraged local governments, as well as other provinces, to adopt similar policies. “I would really encourage you as a council to look at a wood-first policy,” Jeffery said. Making no firm commitment, Mayor Lois Jackson told Jeffery council might discuss the possibility of implementing such a policy with municipal staff.

The Kids First Campaign is raising $830,000 to complete the 20,000 square foot sport gymnasium. The funds will be essentially split between construction costs and new equipment needed to outfit the facility. The centre is scheduled to have a grand opening in April 2011. The project also received $938,500 from Delta and $753,00 from the federal government.

The Corporation of Delta is moving forward with several improvements to a stretch of River Road West. Civic politicians last week approved awarding the contract for the project to CitiWest Consulting Ltd. The list of improvements for the roadway between the Westham Island Bridge and Ashbury Place include: widening to allow on-street parking on one side, a concrete sidewalk on the south side east of 40th Street, intersection improvements at 41B Street to accommodate trucks turning, possible traffic calming measures east of 41B Street and dike improvements. Some residents in the area have been advocating for changes along that stretch of road to improve safety and impede speeders. In May of 2008, residents sent Delta council a petition containing 141 signatures asking that the road be upgraded to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists,

MURPHY’S LAW It’s hard to suggest it’s an improvement on what we had. Then again, it’s better than nothing. I’ve complained for years about the lack of signage at major entrance points to the municipality, so now that Delta has actually done something about it, I’m hard pressed to throw too many stones. Having said that, it’s hard to believe the sign on Trunk Road just east of Harvest Drive could be any plainer. I’m far from an artistic type, but the previous sign with the heron gave the place some character while its replacement is so dull I thought Stephen Harper’s stylist had a hand in its creation. I’m pleased to see a sign just south of the George Massey Tunnel as it always confounded me how at the north end drivers were welcomed to Richmond but at the other end they had no idea what jurisdiction they’d just entered. *** Speaking of the tunnel, it’s not surprising recently obtained provincial projections don’t have the South Fraser Perimeter Road helping to ease the truck flow through the tube. As much as the South Fraser Perimeter Road will address the lack of a decent east-west highway south of the Fraser River, it’s not going to change the route that many trucks, and all other vehicles for that matter, travel every day. And for a great many of them, that’s through the tunnel. So while the new road will provide a much better link to the Trans-Canada Highway than what passes for a connection at present, it’s likely to have little impact on our biggest bottleneck, the 51year-old tunnel. What’s more worrisome is that after spending a billion dollars or more to build the Perimeter Road, you can bet Victoria won’t be in a hurry to invest in this area’s road network anytime soon. *** It was the right thing to say! Looking for a by-election question to ask in last week’s Feedback, we opted against putting people on the spot to come up with a pressing issue and instead simply asked them if they’re going to vote. It seems kind of an odd query, but given only 40 per cent vote in a general municipal election and less than half that for a by-election, it’s really not that unreasonable. Chances are that of the five people we posed the question to, only one will actually make it to the polling station. Luckily for us, we ran into a far more politically conscious crowd.

Heron sign slipped through the cracks during planning process DAN SOUTHARD

COMMUNITY COMMENT I don’t mind criticism. At least it lets you know people are reading, and it’s less embarrassing than praise. I even started a “Who hates Dan Southard’s column in the Optimist?” Facebook group a couple of years ago to provide people a place to vent. So far, only two members, and I’m one of them. However, I do prefer criticism about something I actually wrote, rather than what someone wants to think I wrote. Speaking of which, to the fellow who suggested that I should be prominently featured on a parade float dressed in “pink leotards,” I’m sorry to disappoint you, but that’s going to remain just a dream of yours. On to a subject that may make a few more people angry with me, the Ladner heron sign. You see, I was on the committee that selected

the design and locations of the new signs in Delta. I’ll get into the reasoning behind the sign change shortly, but first some background information. The standing committee on tourism and economic development (comprised of four community members and four members of council) was created in 2006 with a mandate to identify tourism and economic development opportunities and guide the development of a tourism plan. Our first action was to contract a consulting firm to develop a tourism strategy report. Following a recommendation in that report, a marketing firm was selected to develop a comprehensive branding scheme for Delta. The marketing firm eventually presented us with several logos and sign schemes to choose from. The now-familiar Delta bulrush logo was quickly agreed upon, whereas the font and colour schemes for community signs and banners were more extensively debated. I wasn’t fond of the pastel-colour scheme, but being that I’m colour blind, and that the designs were well-suited for their purposes, it wasn’t something I debated very strongly. The next decision was to choose

the order and locations for the new signs’ placements. From day one my goal was simply to get wayfinding signs installed that would inform people driving to and from the ferries that there’s more to do in Tsawwassen and Ladner than visit McDonald’s. So, those are the signs I wanted to see go up first. However, it was decided that installing the new signs in the civic centres first would best serve to establish the new branding, which, I must admit, was the logical choice from a marketing perspective. During those discussions the heron sign simply became a detail that slipped through the cracks as our attention was focused on the strategic placement of the new signs. A poor excuse perhaps, but there you have it. While the marketing strategy is sound, I understand why people are upset. I liked that sign, too. Removing the new sign, as some have suggested, would be costly and counter-productive to the branding strategy. Perhaps instead, the heron sign could be relocated, or stored until a time when it could be part of the Ladner waterfront redevelopment ... if that ever occurs, that is.

Learn to swim in a Ignorant viewpoints brought forward 1/4 of the time longest public hearing in Canadian history voted strongly against development. Century’s latest proposal should never have been brought forward in the first place, and, if Sean Hodgins (and to some extent local and provincial governments) had a lick of

common sense, this property would be a park by now. Throughout this whole fiasco, Southlands development proponents have expressed some pretty ignorant viewpoints. H. Wallace’s attitude helps explain why. Ted Laturnus

Old heron sign always gave a heartwarming welcome Editor: I agree with previous comments made by local Ladner residents regarding the Ladner heron sign in that it was always a heart-

warming welcome back home for Ladner residents and to visitors to our area. It always brought a smile to my face with its charm and artistry and did not look

damaged to the point of needing replacement by any means. The new stone replacement is quite cold and unwelcoming in compari-

son. Please bring back our heron sign and don’t leave it in storage somewhere unseen and unappreciated. Val Dow

New eyesore at entrance of Ladner brings ‘dull, cold and boring’ to mind Editor: Re: Put heron back at entrance of town, letter to the editor, Aug. 21 and Piece of cement slab not representative of Ladner, letter to the editor, Aug. 21

Thank you to Harry and Margaret for their comments about the eyesore at the entrance to Ladner. What does it say about Ladner? Three words that come

to mind immediately are dull, cold and boring. Not representative of how I see Ladner and hopefully our heron will be returned. Whoever has designed this obviously has no notion

of what our little village of Ladner is all about. So goodbye dull and boring and hopefully our Welcome to Ladner heron is returned ASAP. Christine Conroy

Clearly, this writer has overlooked the fact the recent poll vis a vis the fate of the Southlands property is the result of over 60 per cent of local residents voting against development (that’s a higher number than voted in the last municipal election) and, in 1989, the

Keep these ideas in mind Editor: Re: A little good news out of debacle, Murphy’s Law, July 28 I would like to continue the discussion Ted Murphy started with his recent editorial regarding the “elephant lurking beyond the fence” referring to the power lines that Gordon Campbell, in his 2005 preelection written promise, stated would not be erected. Just remember there are no Canadian standards, at the moment, in regards to locating high voltage power lines in proximity to schools and residential areas, such as homes, care facilities and churches. The WHO guidelines being quoted by BCTC in relation to “safe emissions from high voltage power lines” are from standards set in 1978 and the wording to buy one of the right-

of-way houses is that any potential owner will have to make their own “choice” if they wish to live in proximity to these lines. Let’s have some fun and throw out a few ideas: B.C. Hydro owns the land beside Highway 17 all the way to the ferry terminal, which is one of the other rights of way. The TFN have plans to conduct a massive development on their land. Sean Hodgins wants to develop more land for residences in Tsawwassen and yet the Southlands is designated farmland. People don’t want the power lines in Tsawwassen. Can Hodgins not make a deal with his Liberal friends to bury and shield the lines under the Highway 17 right-of-way, which will not impact the TFN development plans? Perhaps Hodgins can

make some sort of tradeoff with the Southlands for (part of) the current rightof-way, so smaller housing can take place and farmland will be saved for farming. All of these ideas will bring families and more children into the schools, improve the local economy and the people of Tsawwassen will be happy the elephant in their backyard will now go away. B.C. Hydro has already stated the current plan to sell these homes will generate a $23 million dollar loss, so any sort of creative thinking/dreaming to address the power lines, the Southlands, building a variety of new residences while maintaining the small town charm of Tsawwassen should not be ignored. Heather Colls Wahlberg Mothers Against Power Poles

Let the people decide on entrance sign Editor: The sign at the entrance to Ladner was in a class of its own.

A beautiful blue heron with class. Now we have a cement slab with no class. What are

you thinking? Bring back the heron and let the people judge. Betty D. Fushtor

My feet are happy. OK, so my arms aren’t feeling too bad either. The calves are contented, the chin is cheerful. The shoulders are feeling decidedly all right. But the feet. Well. If feet could talk, mine would not only be laughing; they’d be singing. They like the summer, my feet. They like to be, well, liberated from the woolly socks of November and the rubber boots of December and those faux fur boots of January. My feet were never faux fur boot fans. Too pretentious, they would say. If only they could talk. Give us summer. Give us room to breathe. These days, that’s precisely what they do. They make themselves at home in flip-flops. They stretch out. They turn chestnut brown. They dip themselves

And then they chuck off the sandals and walk around nude, thrilled to know that for a few months, at least, people can actually see them. They’re a lot like me, these feet. OK, so I don’t paint the body fire engine red or chuck off the clothing. But I do stretch out.

I turn brown. And I dip myself in the ocean surf. Just like the feet, I like the way summer liberates me from all things fall and winter and spring. No boots. No umbrellas or sweaters or parkas or stupid faux fur things. You walk around deliriously unencumbered at this time of year. There is no need to pack the jacket when you head off to work. No need to take the gloves or the scarf or the hat that covers the ears. You march off with only your lunch bag in tow and the newspaper and your paperback under your arm. You stand at the bus stop and grab a 10-minute tan while you’re waiting for the 601. And the feet. Well. They can’t talk, of course, or laugh or sing. But they sure feel pretty when they’re standing there – supporting their proprietor. For a little while, at least, they’re clearly in show-off mode. They get a kick out of stretching their toes. Before those toes go into hiding.

Society’s website to check out all the categories and to enter. A wide variety of activities are scheduled for throughout the day, starting with Yoga in the Garden, from 9 to 10 a.m., with community partner, Lululemon Athletica. The Tsawwassen Lions Club will hold an old-fashioned pancake breakfast from 9:30 to 11 a.m., and Delta Gymnastics will get kids hopping with a sack race at 11 a.m. An all day quilt walk will feature the work of the Boundary Bay Quilter’s Guild, and a Farmer’s Market, sponsored by Thrifty’s Foods, will feature local, organic produce, baked goods from Baked in the Bay, and value added products from local farms. This year’s fair highlight will be the ribbon cutting for the Earthwise Society’s new Kitchen Garden, built with the help of the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen. The Kitchen Garden Café opens at noon, following

the ribbon cutting. Chef Daniel Meneghini, formerly of Boundary Bay Café, will bake and serve fresh pizza and bruschetta in the newly built cob oven, using heirloom tomatoes and other veggies from the Earthwise Farm. Also new this year is the first ever Great Slug and Snail Race. Slug and snail jockeys are encouraged to hunt for the slimiest and squirmiest to enter in the race. If you plan to bring a slug or snail to race, make sure to keep it moist and cool, with plenty to eat before the race. Get your slimer trained and ready to go for Sept. 4. The race starts at 1:45 p.m. Admission to the fair is $2 at the gate and all event proceeds help support the Earthwise Society’s educational programs. For more information about the Grow Local Fair and for a schedule of events visit www.earthwisesociety. bc.ca or e-mail info@earthwisesociety.bc.ca.

I’m a small town B.C. guy – born and raised in Parksville on Vancouver Island. I began playing football while attending high school at Ballenas Secondary and because of my size I was a natural fit on the offensive line. In fact, I did so well that I was named my team’s Most Valuable Player in my senior season. Following my high school graduation, I had an opportunity to head south to continue my education and play football for the University of South Carolina in the NCAA’s Southeastern Conference, which features some of the most competitive college football in the United States. After playing four years on the Gamecocks’ offensive line, I had a newfound appreciation for my adopted home but was nonetheless excited to return to British Columbia to don the black and orange as the Lions’ first-round selection in the 2008 CFL draft. I’d seen firsthand what Panorama Ridge student Jenn Grewal playing in front gets a lift from BC Lions offensive lineof some of the man Justin Sorensen before a charity game between the BC Lions and the most passionate RCMP to raise funds for Haiti relief. football fans is Photo: Sharon Doucette, Surrey Now all about and I knew I’d see similar support from Lions fans back home in B.C. Now in my second season on the Leos’ offensive line, I feel privileged to come to work every day and play the game I love. Nothing would make me happier than to bring the Grey Cup home to British Columbia and share that experience with my family and friends. Through thick and thin, the guys on the offensive line have become family to me and I’m proud of the contributions we make on and off the field. As a kid who dreamed of playing professional football from a young age, I remember looking up to athletes for inspiration. For that reason, I enjoy taking part in the Lions’ community programs throughout the year, particularly the Terasen Gas Energy Champions initiative. It gives me a feeling of pride to give back to the local community and Justin Sorensen in action. know that in some small way I could be having a Photo courtesy BC Lions positive influence on the younger generation.

A busy lacrosse season for Logan Schuss included setting freshman scoring records at Ohio State University (left) and helping the Delta Junior “A” Islanders to their best season ever.

From Ladner to big time NCAA program

Logan Schuss faced huge adjustment on and off the field during his record freshman season at Ohio State University MARK BOOTH

Soon after arriving at Ohio State University, Logan Schuss was thinking more about a one-way ticket home than setting school scoring records. Despite his outstanding freshman season playing field lacrosse that resulted in conference and All-American honours, the scoring sensation from Ladner admitted it was an eye-opener walking into a big time NCAA program. “For the first couple of practices I saw all these kids and just how high of calibure they were,” he recalled. “I was getting a little worried and wondered if I would be playing at all. It got to the point where I actually got discouraged and wanted to go home.” Instead of being overwhelmed by the environment and the high quality of play, Schuss decided it was time to stop just trying to fit in and show the skills that landed him the full-ride scholarship in the first place.

“One practice I said to myself that I am going to do what I want to do and that’s taking the ball to the net. I did that and I started producing. Once I had the momentum, I just kept it going.” He set modest goals for himself — hoping to hit the 20-point plateau as a rookie. That number was surpassed in the early stages of the regular season as he would go on to rack up 31 goals and 56 points, the most for a freshman in school history. He ranked 14th nationally (second among freshmen) in scoring, averaging 3.73 points per game. He ended the year with 21 points in his last four games combined, including a career-best seven goals in a 19-13 loss to fourth ranked North Carolina. He had three or more points in 10 games, including two six-point outings and two five-point games. Schuss earned a league-high six ECAC weekly awards and was named the conference’s top rookie. He credits his success with grasping what it takes to compete at that level, and that required doing a lot of work without

his stick. “The first thing I recognized was the American players showed up in the best shape of their lives,” he said. “ They are basically like robots. Right after a two hour practice, we would go do a 90 minute workout. Everyday was just working out and that was something that was not my focal point before I went down there. I sure learned quick. “We are basically one big family and you just play away everyday. It’s work there and they think of it as your job.” Field lacrosse was just part of the adjustment for the Delta secondary graduate who has spent all his life in Ladner and was suddenly among 63,000 students adjusting to campus life at the Columbus, Ohio school. He learned quickly getting seats for Buckeyes football games was no easy task despite playing in a stadium that has a capacity of 100,000. He has since invested in season tickets for the coming season. “I am use to walking through Ladner and waving to about 30 people I know,”

laughed Schuss. “I just turned my Ipod on and kept walking (through the campus). It feels like a long way from home but there are a couple of B.C. guys on the team and my parents and girlfriend did come out for a visit.” He returned for the late stages of the junior “A” box season and helped the Delta Islanders to their best season ever, culminating with an appearance in the league semi-finals. He also showed his box game remains razor sharp, producing 26 points in five playoff games. Schuss has been working a construction job over the summer and OSU’s trimester schedule means he doesn’t have to go back to school until mid-September. Despite the regular season not starting until next February, he is already aware of the expectations that will be put on his shoulders. “The coach has already told me he wants me to be more of a leader,” he added. “I’m going to have to step up my game even more and be ready to rumble.”

Two players from the Ladner Minor Baseball Association will be playing for Team B.C. at this week’s 2010 Baseball Canada Bantam Girls National Championships in Richmond. Tryouts were held in July throughout the province for girls aged 14 to 16 who play on recognized baseball teams. Lexie Brenneis and Paige Harbord have both been the LMBA system for a number of years and just completed their first-year at the Bantam level this past season, under the guidance

of coaches Kal Phagura and Todd Brenneis. At just 14, they are the two youngest members chosen to represent B.C. at the Nationals. The girls thank the LMBA and all their coaches over the years for providing them with the skills and encouragement to make the provincial team. The championships get underway Thursday and B.C. opens play against Saskatchewan at 3 p.m. Round robin action continues through Saturday. The championship game goes at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

It’s dark. It’s cold. It’s raining. You are treading water miles from shore. You have no radio and no vessel. You hope someone has noticed you are missing and that somehow, help will come out in this weather to find you....... It’s fairly common for Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (CCGA) Unit 08 volunteers to have to roll out of their warm beds, get dressed and race out to sea in the middle of the night, in miserable conditions, and to search for lost or missing boats and people. When their pagers go off, they have less than 30 minutes to launch the fast response boat The Spirit of Delta IV. The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, Unit 8, Delta, BC is supported by the Delta Marine Rescue Society, a registered non-profit charitable society formed to raise funding for marine search and rescue operations (SAR) in local waters, and the delivery of boating safety programs specifically around Delta and its neighbouring communities. The society is partially funded by Direct Access community grants for public safety The society and the unit currently require volunteers for the following positions:

Being an excellent electrician, he was transferred from Winnipeg to Vancouver in 1967, to oversee the wiring of the Board of Trade Building on West Hastings Street. Don and his family chose to live in Ladner. He loved to go golfing with his friends and wished he had started golfing at least 20 years earlier. PETERSON

Gertrude (Trudy) Lillian (nee Chandler) Born November 19, 1912 in Cromer, Manitoba, passed away July 28, 2010. Trudy loved to walk on the garden and sit by the pond. She would talk to the birds, feed the fish and sip a chilled glass of white wine. Trudy’s family descended from United Empire Loyalists of Nova Scotia. After marrying Pete(B.H.) Peterson, to whom she was married for 73 years, she moved many times; each time she towed her 3 children behind and set up their family home (once in a garage). During her life she witnessed the advent of T.V., internet, cell phones, credit cards, laptop computer and so many other thing all of which she was reluctant to use. Instead she spent her time volunteering in the community. She coordinated bazaars, rummage sales and teas at St. Stephens United Church. She was President of Kiwassa; Union College Women’s Auxiliary; John Oliver P.T.A., Charter member of Fair Haven home for Seniors; and Marpole curling club. She loved to write and tell jokes. Every night she played bridge at the Waterford and it was after a bridge game that she had a fall and ended up in the hospital. She passed away peacefully two days later. She will be missed by her family and many friends. She is survived by her 3 children; Jerrold (Paula), Neil (Marisue) and Marilyn (Bruce). Numerous Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren and Great Great Grandchildren. Memorial Service will be held at the Ladner United Church 4960 48th Avenue, Ladner, 2 pm, August 27th, 2010. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Delta Hospital Foundation - 5800 Mountain View Blvd., Delta, B.C., V4K 3V6 or Ladner United Church. 'mother loved to wear purple'

BERRY, Helen Norma (Hartwig) February 19, 1925 - August 18, 2010

Celebration of Life: September 5, 2010 McKee Seniors Recreation Centre, 1:30 - 3:30 PM Refreshments to follow

It is with sadness but also a sense of relief that we announce the passing of a very special woman, Helen Berry. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years on June 30, 2010. It was apparent that in her own way, from her extended care bed, she was making sure everything was going “properly”. Although, in the last year, very little words were spoken by Helen, she was always able to muster a huge smile for anyone who visited or said hello. Helen is survived by her sisters, Donna Greenwood (Barry), Valerie Ballantyne, and Doreen Marcoux. Also surviving, her son Kenneth (Julia), grandchildren Kate deWynter (Brett) and Geoff (Pamela) and her pride and joy of eight “little ones”: Carysa, Harmony, Anna, Jacob, Eric, Nathan, David and Tahya. She also leaves behind many, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who were very important to her over the years. Helen was born in Goodeve, Saskatchewan and moved to Vancouver and later to Coquitlam where she lived with her 10 brothers and sisters. In 1937, Helen was crowned Miss Canada during the May Day Celebration, something she was very, very proud of. Helen was courted by a young Head Doorman (Doug) while she was the Head Usherette at the Odeon Theatre (not the Pantages). They obviously hit it off as they celebrated their 62nd Anniversary on June 17, 2010. It was their last celebration together. In the early 1940’s, Helen was a seamstress at Spencers and later was a seamstress at Woodwards (downtown) for 20 years. In the early 1950’s, Helen was also a Hat Check girl at the Commadore on weekends. Ken can remember Dad coming home from work and having a special family meal on Fridays and saying goodbye to Mom as she went out to work “at the club” and Dad would wait up until the “wee hours” until she came home. Poor health dictated no more work for Helen from 1967 onward and she was content to “stay busy” at home, gardening and concocting excellent food experiments for family and friends, and learning to make ornate lampshades. She became a legend for her ability to grow geraniums from the shoots and taught any interested neighbour “the secret” to success. She had a love for Japanese Maples, clematis, and Lady Beal heather. Helen also took courses in cake decorating and flower arranging and soon was making presentations that would stop traffic with their intricacies, colour and detail. Helen discovered delicious home made pizza long before the fast food craze ever took hold. Her “pies” could feed a dozen people at one sitting. Helen would busy herself with helping friends and family with clothing alterations and doing unbelievably delicate needlework and petit point, which still adorn the family home. She also made gallons and gallons of Blackberry jelly. Boy, could she cheat at canasta! Helen, much to the chagrin of her husband Doug, was a great shopper for clothes, material, doilies and goodies for “the little ones”. Whenever someone visited she would always try to slip a $5, $10 or $20 bill to that person depending upon age, to “go buy something nice”. The Berry household, in Richmond, was the holding pond for many relatives flying in and out of BC. Many, many nieces and nephews boarded, visited or holidayed at the Berry home or Boundary Bay cabins. Helen loved to direct traffic (Doug and relatives) from the kitchen table or the bed if she was feeling poorly. She loved visiting the Cariboo at her brother Ed’s place and later at Anahim Lake, Likely and Williams Lake with her son and his family. Despite her medical problems, Doug and Helen were able to make many trips to Maui and Alaska but their truly favourite place was Boundary Bay. They rented or owned cabins there for just about all of their 62 years together, a tradition that the Berry family continues to this day. The Berry family would like to, yet again, extend their thanks and appreciation to the staff at the Waterford Care Home, and more recently, Mountain View Manor. Our Mom (and Dad) were treated as valued members of both families and we know that both will be missed. We are very grateful for the fine care, over the years, given to them by Dr. Henderson and more recently Dr. Rogerson, who says she has never seen a person with a stronger heart than Helen. Although our family has been shaken by the events of the past fifty days, we have come to the understanding that everything unfolded as it should. We truly believe that Mom, in her own way, was making sure Dad was “behaving himself”, and with his sudden and unexpected passing, her job here was complete. Once again, Mom we are so proud of you. You made sure family, friends and strangers were always welcome in your home and let your family know that “busy hands are happy hands”. You too, will be loved and missed by so many. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Delta Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated. On-line condolences at: www.deltafuneral.ca

Shedding light on community issues

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Like puzzles? Then you'll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your Sudoku savvy to the test!
