The community is rallying behind the many residents who were displaced by a fire that ripped through a Ladner seniors’ apartment building Friday night. The blaze started at about 7 p.m. at a two-storey apartment complex in the 4600block of Evergreen Lane. It took several hours and required 52 firefighters, including some from Richmond, to extinguish the blaze that spread quickly in the 40-yearold wood-framed building that didn’t have a sprinkler system. More than 20 of the 66 suites

in the complex were damaged in the fire and 22 residents, most of them seniors, have been displaced. The apartments are run by the Delta Senior Housing Association and managed by BC Housing. The entire block was evacuated while crews battled the blaze. Firefighters doused the roofs of neighbouring homes in an effort to stop the fire from spreading. No one was injured in the fire. A reception centre for those impacted by the fire was established at McKee Seniors’ See FIRE page 5

Teenager desperate for surgery

Rachel Wilkinson’s parents say 14-year-old could lose ability to walk if she doesn’t get hip operation soon BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Ladner’s Rachel Wilkinson, 14, faces the possibility of losing the ability to walk if she doesn’t get hip surgery in time, her parents say. “It would be so devastating if we can’t get this for her,” said Tanis Wilkinson, Rachel’s step-mom. Rachel is looking at a potential wait time of a year to a year and a half for surgery, said Karan Schwartz, Rachel’s mom. As she continues to walk her right hip joint cartilage wears away and if deterioration gets to a certain point, the teen wouldn’t be viable for surgery, Schwartz said. She adds that Rachel’s bone density is poor so a fall could break or even shatter the pelvis, also making surgery impossible. Rachel would undergo osteotomy surgery, where bones are cut and moved into new positions. She’s currently taking T2s, morphine and a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, Schwartz said. She uses

Shriners, which operate a network of hospitals that

provide care at no cost, for help to in an attempt to

receive the surgery more quickly. “We’re really hoping they’ll take us on,” Schwartz said, noting there are Shriners Hospitals in Spokane and Portland. Rachel is “very complex medically” and requires 24/7 care. She has a genetic disorder known as 22q13 Deletion Syndrome, is nonverbal, has seizures and had her colon removed two years ago. Schwartz said she hopes others will lobby the government to reduce children’s wait times for surgery and that the situation could be improved with a budget increase. She said they filed a complaint to the Provincial Health Services Authority and wrote a letter to the health minister. Authority spokesperson Tracy Tang said she couldn’t comment on specific cases. “We absolutely do understand how it can be frustrating for a family to experience a wait. We’re really empathetic for their situation,” Tang said.

Status quo is not a viable option: Hodgins

Century president not surprised by staff recommendation for Southlands, but says it’s not ideal for community BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Century Group president Sean Hodgins is disappointed but not surprised what’s coming out of the Tsawwassen Area Plan process. Tasked with updating the area plan, which is almost 20 years old, the area plan committee’s most controversial subject has been the 538-acre Southlands, zoned agricultural but no longer in the Agricultural Land Reserve. At the Tsawwassen Area Plan Committee’s meeting last week, municipal planner Barry Konkin told members the recommendation by staff is for the committee to maintain the current agricultural designation. In an interview following the meeting, Hodgins, who didn’t attend Thursday’s meeting, nor talk to the committee or staff about his property, said he expected staff to come up with the recommendation. “My question, I would think, would be the best

Committee member Helen Kettle, though, had several concerns about how the survey results were gathered and presented. She also complained the committee never had a full discussion on the Southlands. Hoping the door won’t be completely closed to having a discussion on what it would take to make the Southlands farmable, Hodgins said he had his own telephone survey of 400 households conducted last week, using the same questions that were in the municipal survey. His survey found there was an almost even split of support and opposition to allowing some development. “We’re now 16 months from a municipal election. Do they (council) want the Southlands simmering out there as an issue for further discussion, or put it to bed in some way? The reality is, without any disrespect to any of the people on the committee or to mayor and council or staff, thinking that you designate it status quo and status quo will stay the actual result, it’s not

true,” he said. “Quite honestly, I wouldn’t know what to do if the assumed status quo is placed on the property. I’m somewhat discouraged. I really don’t know what that means and I’m really going to have to reconsider our longterm ownership. Waste-to-energy will be part of Metro Vancouver’s new solid waste plan. After a lengthy debate last Friday, the regional district’s board of directors voted in favour of considering garbage incineration with a facility that could be located either in the region or outside. Delta Mayor Lois Jackson, who chairs the board, said Environment Minister Barry Penner will have the final say on the solid waste plan and wasteto-energy options. In a news release prior to the meeting, Jackson said, “The objective, science-based analysis shows clearly that in economic, environmental and social terms, waste-to-energy is

The Optimist reported that Aquilini Renewable Energy, owned by Vancouver Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini, is looking for opportunities in green energy, including waste-to-power and wind power. Energy company president John Negrin confirmed they were looking at the possibility of building a modern waste-to-energy facility at the TFN and had some preliminary discussions with the band. The region’s solid waste plan calls for the continued use of the Vancouver Landfill in Delta as well as the Burnaby incinerator.

Drivers show cards at weekend roadblocks

Delta police were called to the 900-block of Gale Drive in Tsawwassen Saturday after a man reported that an acquaintance had threatened to shoot him after an argument between the two. Officers were dispatched to the man’s home and ultimately called the suspect out of the residence and took him into custody without incident. Upon further investigation, police discovered gaspowered pellet pistols. The incident is still under investigation. *** Police caught an impaired driver Sunday who had already been in a col-

lision. Delta police and RCMP officers set up an impromptu CounterAttack roadblock at highways 17 and 10. As a vehicle approached the area, officers noted there was damage to the windshield. Police said the initial indication was the driver had struck a cyclist in Richmond and was giving him a ride home. The driver failed a roadside breath test. She was arrested and taken to the detachment for further breath testing. She was later released on a promise to appear in court. The cyclist was not injured.

The file is still under investigation. *** On Monday, Delta police and the RCMP set up another CounterAttack roadblock at the same location when a vehicle travelling south on Highway 17 struck a parked and unoccupied police vehicle. The driver of the offending vehicle was given a roadside screening test, which indicated a “warn.” As a result, officers issued a 24-hour driving ban. The incident is still under investigation and no one was hurt in the collision. The damage to the police vehicle is estimated at $1,500.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW When Carol Berner was found guilty last week on all four charges stemming from the fatal collision in East Ladner two years ago it was an instance where our justice system actually dispensed justice. Perhaps I’ve become too jaded over the years, but so often when I hear of court cases these days it’s a situation where the rights of the accused trump those of the victims and of society as a whole — a judicial system that doesn’t seem just. In his reasons for judgment in the Berner case, provincial court Judge Peder Gulbransen stated the Crown didn’t have to prove its case to an absolute certainty, but would be successful if the guilt of the accused was the only rational conclusion which could be drawn from the evidence. That rational conclusion in this case is that Berner, fueled by a significant amount of alcohol, drove her car in such a reckless manner that she caused the death of Alexa Middelaer and severe injuries to the four-year-old’s aunt while the pair fed horses on 64th Street in May of 2008. It was painfully obvious that Berner, driving along a straight, flat stretch of road not far from her home for the previous year, was to blame for her Oldsmobile Intrigue leaving the road, slamming into the parked car that held Alexa’s grandparents and then plowing into the little girl and her aunt. However, there were several opportunities during the four-week trial where Gulbransen could have made rulings that would have weakened the Crown’s case and likely made true justice the loser. Thankfully, he didn’t. There was a point early on when the defence challenged the admissibility of the blood alcohol tests because Berner didn’t display any outward signs of impairment following the collision and therefore, the argument went, should never have been tested. Throwing the results out would not only have dealt a fatal blow to the prosecution’s case, but would not have been just given the role alcohol clearly played in this tragic case. Later in the trial the defence tried to get all charges dropped because it’s case was incomplete due to Berner’s vehicle being scrapped after police had completed their mechanical investigation. Again, the application was dismissed, largely because Berner had consented to the car’s destruction. It was heartening to see Gulbransen use some common sense during his intrial rulings as well as in his eventual verdict. Let’s hope such thinking continues as we await sentencing.

Signage suggests blueberry harvest is far from plentiful DAN SOUTHARD

COMMUNITY COMMENT For a while there it seemed like summer would never come, but things sure have changed. My garden has even mostly recovered from our rain-soaked spring. Still, I’m anticipating a light yield this year, and apparently I’m not the only one. Driving around Delta I’ve noticed that a number of our local farmers seem to have only been able to produce one blueberry each this season. That’s got to make it hard to pay the bills, especially given how long it’s taking each of them to sell that blueberry. The weather’s not the only thing that’s been heating up lately, as it appears there’s a battle of the Southland polls brewing. As you may now be aware, the Mustel Group has been conducting a telephone poll in Tsawwassen that asks very similar questions to

those of the municipally-funded Ipsos Reid poll on development in Tsawwassen. Now, I’m just guessing here, and have no supporting evidence, but it seems to me Sean Hodgins has commissioned this poll with the hope of getting results that will discredit the Ipsos Reid poll, a poll Hodgins believes is biased, as opponents to the Southlands proposal would be more likely to take the time to mail in a survey than would supporters. Will Hodgins be proven right? Well, if the Mustel poll results are never released, then we’ll know the answer is “no.” If the results do fall in his favour, then we have a whole new wrinkle to a debate that already resembles a 105-year-old smoker. OK, now I want you imagine a great segue from the Southlands to hate-crimes and phobias, because I can’t. The increased number of stories in the news this summer about “homophobia-driven” hate-crimes committed in Vancouver has me pondering the use and meanings of words. Activists in the gay community have long insisted on use of the term “homophobia” to describe discrimination against homosexuals, and it has been fully adopted

The Optimist encourages readers to write letters to the editor. Letters are accepted on any topic, although preference is given to those on local matters. The Optimist reserves the right to edit letters and the decision to publish is at the discretion of the editor or publisher. All letters must be signed, dated and include the writer’s phone number

by the media, politicians and the judiciary. So, is homophobia a real phobia? If so, and given that phobias are recognized as diagnosable mental illnesses, could one argue that Canada’s courts are obligated to consider homophobia a mitigating factor in cases of “gay bashing?” Our courts frequently excuse people from serving time in jail due to mental illnesses ranging from bi-polar disorder to drug addiction. So, why is it that “homophobia” would be used as a reason to subject a defendant to a longer than normal jail sentence? I’m no lawyer, but it seems that such an inconsistency could be open to a legal challenge. It would be a strange twist if the term “homophobia,” which was designed to be demeaning to those who discriminate against homosexuals, began to be used as an effective defence to get gay bashers off the hook. Who knows, maybe soon we’ll see judges offering treatment programs to people who utter homophobic slurs while assaulting random strangers, rather than punishing them. Absurd? Sure, but keep in mind, this is the Canadian justice system we’re talking about.

BACK Majority ‘could care less’ PAIN?

Ban on two-stroke engines can’t come soon enough Editor: Re: Ban lawn care equipment with two-stroke engines, letter to the editor, July 24 I cannot agree more with J. Ward. These air and noise polluting two-stroke engines

used to power lawnmowers, hedge trimmers and leaf blowers are particularly bad offenders. Especially for those of us that live near a power lawnmower, hedge trimmer and leaf blower repair shop where the air

and noise polluting twostroke engines go on incessantly throughout the day. It seems the way to repair one of these air and noise polluting engines is to rev it continuously. R. Crawford

on the survey is the large number (1,353) of single returns per household, which should concern the planners. Could this indicate that a number of households only thought they needed to return one survey per household rather than one per eligible adult, and if that was the case the total survey result is essentially inaccurate. To those harping about the overwhelming majority, forget it, the math doesn’t support it. Only a small minority, 20 per cent, of the community support retaining the agricultural zoning, eight per cent more than the 12 per cent who favour some development. The vast majority, 65 per cent, either has no interest or could care less regarding which way it goes. Bob Creighton

20,000, which would yield about 16,000 eligible voters. So far it matches up. Using the figures provided by the municipal website I calculate the results as follows. There were about 5,672 residential returns out of 16,370, which is a return rate of 34.5 per cent. There were 189 returns, to about 1.2 per cent, rejected and another 49, or 0.4 per cent, not counted. There were 3,395 returns, or 20.7 per cent, of the total that wanted the agricultural designation to remain and 2,039, or about 12.5 per cent, of the total that favoured some form of development. Clearly, 65.5 per cent, or approximately 10,000 people of the eligible population, did not respond to the survey. The interesting anomaly

Editor: I have some difficulty understanding the spin used to calculate the results from the residential part of the TAP survey. Comparing the number of mail outs to the number of returns is incorrect. Since two surveys were included in each mail out the total returns should have been divided by two to keep the same ratio. Comparing to the civic election is also incorrect since those figures were based on single voter count. The correct calculation is to use the total number of surveys mailed which properly represents the eligible residential base. There were 8,000 residential mail outs with two surveys per mail out. An additional 370 were issued separately for a total of 16,370. The population of Tsawwassen is about

Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words I’m a B.C. boy – born and raised in Richmond. I began playing football while attending high school at Vancouver College and continued to develop my skills during my university career at Simon Fraser. I have been a fan of the Black and Orange all my life and distinctly remember attending Lions games at BC Place in the 1980s. My brother Mark was briefly a Lion in 1990 – so football genes definitely run in my family! After 10 seasons with the Lions, I still can’t believe that I get to come to work every day and play the game I love, and I’m more determined than ever to bring the Grey Cup home to B.C. at least one more time during my career. As one of the longest-serving veterans on the team and the guy anchoring the offensive line in the centre position, I take a leadership role in the locker room and am sometimes looked to for advice by the younger players. Our team — and the O-line in particular — is like a family to me and I’m proud of my contributions in the locker room and on the field. As the second-youngest of six kids in my family, I looked up to my older siblings when I was growing up for inspiration and guidance. For that reason, I love taking part in the Lions’ community programs throughout the year, particularly the club’s Lions in the House initiative. It makes me feel proud to know that I could have a positive influence on a young person who is at a very important time in their life. As much as I love playing professional football, I believe it’s also important to give back to the community you grew up in and set a good example for the next generation. Angus Reid in action. Winds of change for Pioneers

Longtime coach and general manager poised to step down after senior lacrosse team fails to reach nationals BY

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

It was a loss that ended a season and likely an era for the Ladner Pioneers. Last Thursday’s 14-9 playoff defeat to the TriCity Bandits set the stage for longtime head coach Ross Frehlick and team governor/general manager Dave Dunn to walk away from the senior lacrosse club. Frehlick was an outstanding player, who ranks second in all-time scoring, before enjoying a successful run behind the bench. “Twenty-five years is enough for me,” he said. It’s time for someone else to take this team in a new direction. “It’s been a frustrating year.” Looking to earn a berth in the upcoming President’s Cup national championships in Burnaby, the Pioneers assembled arguably their most talented team ever. However, it came at the expense of some longtime veterans, especially come playoff time. Ladner raced out to a 7-0 record to open the season but then a couple of costly losses resulted in a third place finish and a semifinal match-up with the Bandits.

The two-time defending West Coast Senior Lacrosse champions were also busy stockpiling their line-up, including 2008 National Lacrosse League MVP Athan Ianucci who scored a league record 76 goals for Philadelphia that year. The Bandits opened the best-of-five series with two straight wins before the Pioneers stayed alive with a road victory in game three — setting the stage for last Thursday’s tilt. About 400 fans were treated to some outstanding lacrosse over the opening 40 minutes as Ladner erased a 3-0 deficit with four unanswered goals. The visitors came back to take a 7-6 lead after two periods, then completely dominated the third, scoring seven straight times. “First off, give Tri-City some credit, we got beat by a very good team,” added Frehlick. “I still think this is the best team we have ever had on paper. For whatever reason, we didn’t do enough of the little things right and they made us pay for it. “We had to sit some veteran guys who have not only been great players for this organization but are my friends as well. It made for a difficult situation.” Dunn has been involved in an executive role with

are not easy to find and it’s really a year-long commitment. I just need to step away and take a break.” Boxla bits ... • The Bandits will play Nanaimo in the league championship series after the Timbermen surprised

the first place Burnaby Burrards with a three-game sweep. • Kevin Hansen led Ladner with a five-point night in game four, including a hat trick. Kyle Goundrey and Gary Bining each had two goals and one

assist. Bining was back in the line-up after missing games two and three with a rib injury. The hometown standout has very likely played his last game in Ladner with his focus now on med school.

Rennie hopes to extend his stay with Junior Islanders MARK BOOTH

Greg Rennie hopes he can finish what he started with the Delta Junior “A” Islanders. The general manager and head coach has set a self-imposed deadline of Oct. 1 on whether he will re-sign with the club. Under Rennie’s guidance, the Islanders just wrapped up their best season in franchise history, finishing with an 11-10 record and winning its first-ever playoff series.

The future also looks promising with many key players still having junior eligibility remaining, including top scorers Logan Schuss, Mike Mallory, Ryan Keith and Michael Berekoff, along with defensive standout Cody Hawkins and goalie Blake Duncan. “I made a two-year commitment to this team and I am proud of what we have accomplished,” said Rennie. “Under the right circumstances, I would like to come back. This club has an exciting future and

the goal is to win a Minto Cup. “The biggest thing is kids now want to come and play for the Delta Islanders. Everyone knows we are an up-and-coming team.” Despite his enthusiasm for the game, Rennie admitted he would like to lessen his workload should he return. The problem it seems with lacrosse, at all levels, is finding enough volunteers to help at the administrative level as well as with game day operations.

“I just had too much on my plate,” he admitted. “We definitely can use some help to keep moving forward.” The Islanders season ended with a semifinal loss to regular season champion and 2010 Minto Cup hosts Coquitlam Adanacs. The series was a sweep but Delta battled hard in each outing — falling 10-9 in game three on July 23. Schuss finished with six points, including a hat trick, while Boychuk made 53 saves.

A pair of Ladner fastpitch players helped the White Rock ’97 Renegades advance to this week’s Western Canadian Pee Wee “A” Championships in Strathmore, Alberta. Olivia Priestlay and Keeley Ainge were instrumental in why the Renegades were the top 1997 team in B.C. this season. Priestlay enjoyed a fine rookie season as she transformed from catcher to an everyday third baseman She showed her true athleticism and versatility by stepping in and doing a very commendable job. At the plate, as the team’s leadoff hitter, she batted .328 with an impressive on base percentage of .610 and led the way in walks

and stolen bases. She was also second in runs scored. Meanwhile, in her second season as a Renegade, Ainge proved once again to be the ace of the pitching staff. She led the team in ERA, innings pitched, wins and strikeouts. In their game advancing win over the Surrey Storm at the recent Provincial Championships in Victoria, Ainge pitched 3 2/3 innings of two-hit relief and gave up a single run in their 10-8 victory and eventual fifth place finish. The clean-up hitter was also a force at the plate, leading the team in RBIs while batting .343.

The Ladner Masters have repeated as provincial champions after taking care of some familiar faces. The over 40 men’s fastpitch team capped an unbeaten run in Victoria with a 5-2 victory over the Richmond Stealers in the gold medal game. The Stealers are a newly formed team that happen to feature a number of former Masters players, including Dean Webster and Terry Bell. “It was just a matter of having an opportunity to play with some guys they have been teammates with in the past that now are old enough for this level,” explained Ladner manager

Doug Pettigrew. Masters’ ace Rick Unrauh got the win in the final and also was named the tournament’s top pitcher. Outfielder Rene Blanleil took home MVP honours for his clutch hitting throughout the tournament. Webster didn’t go home empty handed, earning the Top Batter Award. Ladner will be representing B.C. at this week’s Western Canadian Championships in Moose Jaw. The locals were already assured a trip to Saskatchewan thanks to their placement last year but Pettigrew is glad to be going through the front door. “We were automatically guaran-

MAZEY Margaret With cherished memories of a life well lived, we announce the passing of a dear husband to Merle, devoted father of Brent (Kathleen), Blaine (Mary) and Marylea (Ron). Grandpa will be lovingly remembered by his treasured grandchildren, Kaitlin, Maude, Eric, Braden, John, Cailea and Daniel. Also remembered by Kaitlin and Maude’s mother Karen Morgan. He will be sadly missed by his sisters Kathleen, Dorothy, Ileen and Gladys, and his brother Norman (Ev). Jack was predeceased by his parents Albert and Maud and his older brother Gordon. Jack was born on October 14, 1924 on the home farm at Woodnorth, Manitoba. He attended school in Woodnorth and Virden. Jack joined the South Saskatchewan Regiment and served his country proudly during WWII. In later years, Jack was deeply honoured to have had the opportunity to return to Holland to attend reunions celebrating the Dutch Liberation. After the war, Jack attended Khaki College in England, and the University of Manitoba, obtaining a BSC in Agriculture. Jack joined Green Cross Products in 1950 and retired from the parent company, Ciba Geigy Agriculture Division in 1988. On his retirement, he and Merle moved to Tsawwassen, BC. Jack was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Virden, the United Church,Tsawwassen Legion, and the Lawn Bowling, Senior Golf and Senior Curling Clubs. The family would like to acknowledge Jack’s coffee club group and friends for all their supportive phone calls and visits over the past few months. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Delta, BC on Sunday, August 8th at 2 pm. A family gathering will be held in the Virden Legion Hall, Virden, Manitoba on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at 2:00 pm. The family would like to extend their appreciation to St. Paul’s Cardiac Unit, Surrey Memorial Surgical Unit, Reverend Wendy Biley, Dr. Hollinger and all the staff and volunteers at Irene Thomas Hospice for their compassionate and exceptional care. In lieu of flowers, Jack and his family request donations be made to the Irene Thomas Hospice, 4635 Clarence Taylor Crescent, Delta, BC, V4K 4L8, for the purchase of a reclining wheelchair.

Margaret passed away suddenly at Nanaimo General Hospital in the early morning of June 25th, 2010. She is predeceased by by her beloved husband Allan and granddaughter Olivia, and survived by her loving family; Sister Iris (Bill), children Susan, Peter (Judy), Sally (Dan), and grandchildren Tim, Simon (Shannon), Christopher, Danny, Jeremy, Ben, Timothy, and Chloe. Margaret was married to her wartime love Allan, for 28 years. After Allan’s death in 1972, she moved to Canada in 1976 with her family and settling in Tsawwassen where she worked for many years at the Kinsmen Retirement Home. Margaret was much loved by the residents and staff for her sense of humour, and her compassionate nature. Margaret was dearly loved by her children and grandchildren, and will be missed by many friends both in England and Canada. A Service of Remembrance, and Celebration of Margaret’s Life will be held at St. David’s Anglican Church, Tsawwassen on Saturday, August 7th at 1:30 pm.
