Berner guilty on all charges Judge delivered verdict yesterday morning in case of 2008 East Ladner crash that killed Alexa Middelaer BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
Carol Berner was found guilty on all four charges Tuesday morning in the 2008 crash that killed a Ladner youngster. Judge Peder Gulbransen delivered his verdict in Surrey Provincial Court yesterday morning before a packed courtroom. On May 17, 2008, Alexa Middelaer and her aunt Daphne Johanson were feeding a horse in the 4300-block of 64th Street in East Ladner when a car plowed into them. The little girl was fatally wounded and died later at B.C. Children’s Hospital. Johanson was seriously injured, underwent extensive surgery and spent four weeks in hospital. After a seven-month investigation that included an undercover operation, Berner was charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm. Berner, 58, pleaded not guilty to the charges but did admit through her lawyer she was driving the car at the time of the collision. In handing down his decision, Gulbransen said that while Berner did not show any outward signs of impairment, the choices she made that day – speeding well over the legal limit on a road she had driven many times; not slowing down over the speed bumps – displayed “inward symptoms that her ability to drive was impaired by alcohol.” That, combined with the breathalyzer test results taken at the police station, lead to the judges conclusion that “... no other rational conclusion can be drawn from the evidence.” Outside the courtroom Tuesday, an emotional Michael and Laurel Middelaer said the judge’s decision marked a “great day for B.C.”, but the decision was not what they expected. “I think there’s certainly a sense of validation in terms of what just happened in that courtroom was something that we didn’t expect... but we were happy for British
Carol Berner leaves court yesterday after being found guilty of all four charges she faced. Columbia. I think it was a great day for British Columbia,” said Michael Middelaer. Laurel Middelaer echoed her husband’s sentiments and said that hearing the judge’s view of all the evidence was reassuring to the family. “Today, I feel as a mother, that my little girl was honoured today and I think that there was common sense and care and deliberation in this ruling and I’m very proud as Alexa’s mom that justice was served today,” she said. “There’s no wins here. There’s no losses. There’s just the revelation that truth was upheld.” During the four-week trial, the
Crown argued Berner was not only impaired at the time of the crash – she told an undercover police officer she had consumed three glasses of wine before getting behind the wheel – but was also driving dangerously in the moments before the collision. After registering a “fail” on the roadside breath test, the samples the accused provided at police headquarters about three hours after the crash registered at .06 and .04. During the trial, defence lawyer David Tarnow pointed out there had been a recall notice issued for steering and braking defects on the 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue.
A mechanic who inspected the car for Delta police testified he did not see any problems with the steering or the braking systems when he inspected the car. Tarnow argued there is no way to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Berner’s car had not experienced some kind of mechanical failure. He stated the defence had not been given an opportunity to fully investigate this possibility because the car was sold for scrap in late 2008. After the judge’s decision yesterday Tarnow expressed disappointment with the judge’s decision. “We thought we had a very

good defence to all four counts.” He added that his client, who made no comment to the media at the courthouse, was “very upset” at the outcome. It’s not clear yet whether or not an appeal will be launched. Tarnow said that decision will be made after Berner is sentenced. Crown prosecutor Winston Sayson said the maximum sentence for impaired driving causing death is life imprisonment and the maximum sentence for dangerous driving causing death is 14 years. Sentencing has been set for Nov. 8 to allow time for a pre-sentence report and a psychological assessment.

The report on the financial evaluation noted the preferred disposal option for Vancouver’s garbage from a financial standpoint should be to “landfill at the Vancouver Landfill as long as possible.” The report also stated the additional cost of the regional district’s solid waste plan, including the waste-to-energy scheme, can be in the range of $107
million in the best case scenario to $472 million under the worst case. Meanwhile, the report on greenhouse gas emissions concluded that, based on 2008 waste composition data, CO2 emissions would be slightly higher at the landfill compared to wasteto-energy, but by 2015, when organic waste diversion and recycling targets are realized, the emissions from waste-to-energy would become much higher. Vancouver council has also called on Metro Vancouver to seek an independent review of the impact of “mass burn incineration” on air quality and human health. Noting he’s concerned the Metro plan doesn’t deal
the Vancouver Landfill specifically, Delta CAO George Harvie said in today’s world the landfill wouldn’t be allowed to open. He also questioned Vancouver’s analysis of the emissions. “There are none, it’s actually an interpretation of what happens at other landfills at other locations in North America, and specifically in other climates which do not reflect the rainfall and the bog conditions we have.” Jackson added, “Delta has been very brave in saying we want to get rid of that landfill, we want to get rid of the methane and the CO2 equivalent. We dump for free now, but what we’re

saying is it will be in our backyard.” Metro’s waste management committee decided this week to recommend burning the region’s garbage through waste-toenergy. That recommendation will go to next Friday’s board of directors meeting. Even if Vancouver goes along, there’s still another stumbling block in Fraser Valley Regional District, which has stated its opposition a waste-to-energy facility. Patricia Ross, FVRD board chair, said she was disappointed with the committee’s decision. The Fraser Valley’s opposition could prompt the provincial government to reject Metro’s plan.

Local woman out $20,000 after being approached by female with lottery ticket story at Trenant Park Square BY

A local woman is out $20,000 after falling victim to a scam. On July 16, an elderly woman was approached by the female suspect in the parking lot of Trenant Park Square in Ladner. The woman told the victim that she had just won the lottery but could not claim the prize because she was an illegal immigrant. Police said the suspect told the woman she could not claim her prize unless she had a Canadian citizen present, who must also prove
assets to prove citizenship. “As a result of this elaborate scam the elderly female subsequently provided cash to the suspects with the hope of receiving some of the winnings in exchange for her assistance,” said Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Sharlene Brooks. “It appears this is a well planned scenario as the female suspect was in possession of a lottery ticket with a phone number displayed,” she said. After making contact with the victim, a second male suspect joined in, appeared willing to help the female suspect and
produced a large sum of money. The two suspects then call the number on the ticket and the call taker confirms information required, giving a sense of legitimacy to the scenario, Brooks said. After the woman handed over the money the suspects made their exit. “The suspects preyed on the good nature and vulnerability of the victim,” Brooks said. The female suspect is described as between 50 and 60 years old, 5’2” tall, heavier set with wrinkles on her face, shoulder length dark, curly hair. She spoke
with a Spanish accent and was wearing a light coloured sun hat made from a woven thatch-type material, numerous pieces of jewelry, a dark blouse and pants. She also had a large shiny purse with silver decoration. The man is described as “very short” – possibly under five feet tall – with a round face and short, dark brown hair. He was wearing a collared shirt and blue jeans that were faded at the knees. He spoke with a heavy accent and claimed he was Greek.

Delta council made it official this week; secondary suites are now legal in the municipality. Legalization of suites was among several recommendations that came from the municipal housing task force earlier this year. Under the regulations, the units must abide by certain safety and building code requirements as well as pay utility charges. Some of the restrictions include a maximum of one suite per single-family home and that the floor area of a suite be no more than
40 per cent of the overall dwelling and not greater than 969 square feet. One additional on-site (driveway) parking spot would be required. At Monday night’s council meeting, Tom Leathem, Delta’s director of community planning and development, presented council with a preliminary version of an information brochure about the new regulations. He said staff will monitor the program for six months and then report back to council. At that time, he said, a more permanent, comprehensive information package will be created.
In the first few months of the program, the focus will be more on working with homeowners, however, after Dec. 31, 2010 a daily $200 fine will come into effect for property owners who: have more than one secondary suite in a single family dwelling, have a suite that does not comply with B.C.’s building codes, or have insufficient off-street parking. As well, the municipality is waiving the fees associated with the first inspection and re-inspection of an existing secondary suite until January 31, 2012. “In the interim, we will be dealing with suites in
terms of working with the owners to bring them into compliance,” Leathem said. “That is the intention of the program and it is not the intent to be writing tickets to people immediately.” In addition to the brochure, the Corporation has set up a dedicated hotline, 604-952-3159, and e-mail address, suites@corp.delta. bc.ca, to deal with enquires about the new program. According to staff report to council earlier this year, as of May 12, 2010, there are 2,447 known secondary suites in Delta, of which 1,431 are paying additional utility fees. At 1,776, North Delta has the most suites.

People are invited to join by filling out a form or signing an online petition at www.sandforhirley.ca. The SFPR will be a 40kilometre, four-lane, route along the south side of the Fraser River, extending from Deltaport Way to
176th Street in Surrey, with connections to Highway 1, 91, 99 and the Golden Ears Bridge. Construction of the new highway has been ongoing since 2008 with the completion date pushed back to 2013. A community liaison committee was recently established to facilitate discussion between community representatives and the SFPR project team.

Victim services unit gets ‘furry friend’ as a recruit
Yellow Lab joins Delta police as part of K9 program JESSICA KERR
A new recruit started work with the Delta police this week. On Monday, the department’s victim services unit welcomed a two-year-old yellow Lab to the section in an effort to offer a new approach to lending support and reassurance to people impacted by crime and trauma. The move marked the beginning of the department’s Animal Assistance Intervention K9 Program, the first of its kind in Canada. The department partnered with the Pacific Assistance Dog Society (PADS) to bring the program to Delta. “This furry friend will be deployed to various situations to help calm those who are excessively upset and act as a bridge to communication with people who have difficulty communicating such as children and those with disabilities,” said Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Sharlene Brooks. The coming days and

ment and the role it is expected to fulfill. “At the conclusion of this assessment period, our new four legged member will report for duty at Delta police headquarters daily with his primary handler, victim services co-ordinator Kim Gramlich, and will be available to respond to calls
for service,” Brooks said. PADS was established in 1987. The registered nonprofit and recognized charity breeds, raises, trains and places service, hearing and therapy dogs with people who have a disability other than blindness. Programs like this are being used in the U.S. but Delta’s is the first in Canada. Earlier this year, Gramlich told the Delta police board that U.S. police, fire, juvenile corrections and the FBI use similar programs. She told the board the concept first originated following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City when dogs were brought in as therapy for first responders. The specially trained canines can help “normalize” traumatic situations, ground agitated people, bridge communication and reduce isolation. In keeping with PADS criteria, the department is not able to release the name of the dog until after the training and transition period.

Outlook good for HST petition: organizer Gathering extra signatures against new harmonized tax will ensure campaign is succesful, says Chris Delaney BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Things are looking good for the HST petition, says the lead organizer of the group, which gathered hundreds of thousands of names now being tabulated in Victoria. Fight HST a few weeks ago submitted to Elections BC a petition to repeal the controversial harmonized sales tax, which began July 1. The group needs the signatures of a minimum 10 per cent of voters in all 85 ridings, but in most cases the signature drive met or surpassed 15 per cent in all 85 ridings. Noting the count would immediately stop if they failed to gather the required number in an least one riding, Fight HST organizer Chris Delaney said gathering the extra signatures will ensure the campaign is a success. “Every day that goes by that we don’t hear from them (Elections BC) is a good sign, it means the petition will likely succeed,” Delaney told the Optimist. “We understand that they’ve started with what they thought were the more vulnerable ridings where there were lower number thresholds first. The smallest ridings had about 16 or
17 per cent and the rest will be in the 30 or 40 percentile.” Delaney said they’ve been told Elections BC will announce the results by Aug. 11. “Preliminary reports say that it’s going well. The observers that we have there are under a confidentially agreement, so there’s only so much they can say, but we’ve been told from everything they’ve seen it’s all according to the rules and every effort is being made to validate the signatures,” he added. Fight HST says should the petition prove a success, the government has two options: vote on the legislation proposed by opponents (The HST Extinguishment Act), or conduct a provincewide referendum (Initiative Vote) on the question of extinguishing the HST in B.C. If the government ignores the petition, Fight HST says it will launch recall campaigns against selected Liberal MLAs. The group recently launched court action challenging the new tax. In a news release, Fight HST leader Bill Vander Zalm said consumers and businesses alike are reporting that the impact of the new tax is much worse than

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW After all that’s gone on, who would possibly choose to live there? The answer, at least at the moment, is 47 families. When B.C. Hydro announced it was buying, and then re-selling, 104 homes along the Tsawwassen right-of-way, it looked like the Crown corporation had its work cut out to unload properties it had acquired from those quite happy to get the heck out of Dodge. The marketing efforts, which began last September, followed a bitter, wellpublicized and eventually unsuccessful battle by residents to prevent higher voltage power lines from being strung along the corridor. The four-year campaign to find an alternate method to send more power to Vancouver Island put Tsawwassen in the provincial, and even national, spotlight, so the prospects of turning around and selling these homes seemed somewhat remote. After all that had taken place, and all the negative publicity this area had endured, you’d think people would be more inclined to move to a nice bungalow in Kabul rather than put down roots along the Tsawwassen right-of-way. So when sales started slowly, despite the inquiries of hundreds of potential buyers, it had all the makings of a boondoggle of the highest order. Since that time, however, something has happened. Whether it’s due to the passage of time or a little more flexibility on the price, the homes have begun to be snapped up. At last count, 47 have either sold or have deals pending, leaving 20 on the market and another 37 yet to be listed. At this rate, it won’t take B.C. Hydro anywhere near the three years it originally anticipated it would require to divest itself of the properties. So, finally, a little good news comes out of this debacle, although I’m not so sure the improved timeline will do a whole lot to reduce the projected $23 million loss on the buy-out program. At the end of the day, that money still would have been better spent to either re-route the lines or have them buried and shielded along the existing corridor. That’s not going to happen, so it’s left to a new era of residents to enjoy the attractive homes with the big back yards. They’re obviously not as concerned with the elephant lurking beyond the fence as their predecessors, which is entirely their prerogative, because at the end of the day, it’s an individual choice whether to live along the right-of-way. As far as B.C. Hydro is concerned, it needs to find another 50 or so families that are willing to do so.
Mayor short changing Deltans on Vancouver Landfill question STEVE GRAHAM
COMMUNITY COMMENT One of the more spectacular examples of your mayor and council not working for you was in evidence at the June 12 council meeting. GVRD CAO Johnny Carline and a senior engineer made a presentation on the proposed new solid waste management plan to Metro Vancouver Chair and Delta Mayor Lois Jackson and her council. According to the Province (July 19), Jackson and Carline are proposing “.. a projected 54-per-cent increase to [taxpayers] regional utility bills over a five-year period – a cool $233.” One component of this grand tax hike is the cost of solid waste disposal. Part of the plan is to foist increased responsibilities for
recycling and waste diversion on to municipalities, and it’s not clear if the cost of these items is included in the GVRD tax hike. As for the Vancouver Landfill, the GVRD does not own or control the Vancouver Landfill – Vancouver does. Vancouver saves a lot of money by having its own landfill, and Delta gets a windfall as it disposes its solid waste in the Vancouver Landfill for free. As a result Vancouver is less than enthusiastic about losing its landfill, and you would think that Delta council would be quite concerned about the adverse impact to its taxpayers as well. But no. The topic of the financial consequences to Delta was never raised by the mayor or her councillors at the presentation by the senior GVRD officials. Why not? Afterward Delta CAO George Harvie tried to raise the issue of enhanced environmental impacts, but he got short shrift from the mayor and council. Mayor Jackson has a severe conflict of interest in this matter and she has not explained how Delta will not be especially harmed by the solid waste plan she is propos-

ing. It might be very cost-effective for Delta taxpayers to increase her salary by $100,000 so she can drop the second job and lobby against the proposed solid waste plan on our behalf. Coun. Scott Hamilton’s involvement in this issue has also been interesting. Hamilton scored a junket to Europe last year to visit garbage incinerators, and returned to be the lead spokesman for inhaling fumes. When the proposal by a major Vancouver developer to build an incinerator on the TFN reserve arose last year, I recall that Global TV News did not have a spokesman from either the developer’s firm or the TFN government. But it did find Hamilton, who represented neither party, willing to go on the air and extol the project notwithstanding that there was nothing in it for South Delta but air pollution. Hamilton showed a photo of a similar plant in downtown Paris, however, none was presented of a prototype in downtown Vancouver. Why would Vancouver want one? It has a perfectly good landfill. With Hamilton on your side, watch your lungs and your wallet.

Delta wants annual Burns Bog meeting
Council endorses idea of regular gathering with political leaders so all stakeholders are on the same page SANDOR GYARMATI
Delta wants an annual meeting with political leaders to discuss Burns Bog. Council recently endorsed the idea of asking for a regular gathering of federal and provincial ministers of environment, as well as Metro Vancouver’s bog scientific advisory panel, in order for all the stakeholders to be on the same page when it comes to preservation efforts. “As far as having meetings with the political arm of the Burns Bog covenant, I think it is very wise for us to do that at least on a yearly basis,” Mayor Lois Jackson told the Optimist. While there have been regular meetings at the staff level, Jackson noted it’s important to have that at the
political level as well. “It seems to me it’s also included in the covenant, so it makes abundant sense for the politicians to meet at last once a year to ensure everything is being done as it should be done and everyone is involved as they should be involved, and making sure any changes are dealt with by the four political bodies directing their staff,” she said. The idea for a political meeting follows a recent workshop Delta councillors and staff had with the regional district’s scientific advisory panel. In 2004 four levels of government – federal, provincial, regional and the Corporation of Delta – purchased about 5,000 acres of the bog for $73 million. Five times the size of Stanley Park, it was des-
ignated as the Burns Bog Ecological Reserve, a protected zone. Metro Vancouver then established the scientific advisory panel to oversee the restoration process and provide advice on the longterm management. In the last five years, Delta has focused its efforts on damming internal ditches in Burns Bog in an effort to increase water levels. An extensive water monitoring program is also in place. A recent report to council notes that monitoring, to date, has shown water levels increasing in the areas where dams had been constructed, and stable water levels in the remainder of the bog. Delta’s engineering staff have a $50,000 annual budget for the drainage and monitoring work. In addition to Delta’s
work on the water levels, a number of other issues were raised with the advisory panel at the workshop, including the impact of the adjacent Vancouver Landfill. Another issue was how the massive amount of data relating to hydrological and ecological attributes should be managed in a way that’s useful for future restoration efforts. The issue of fire prevention was also discussed, including the advisory panel’s suggestion of fire breaks in strategic areas of the bog. It would involve the removal of trees. On another front, meanwhile, Delta has put forward to the government a proposal to designate approximately 1,000 acres of public lands just outside the bog’s conservancy zone into the bog’s protected

If the proposal is successful, the lands would be added to the approximately 5,000 acres that are already in the conservancy. In an open letter, Jackson tells Delta residents the municipality would like to have Burns Bog receive the international Ramsar designation, but only after
Unusually warm, dry weather puts fire dep’t on high alert BY

The unusually warm, dry weather this year and this past month has put the local fire department on high alert. “Currently in Delta the fire rating is high,” said fire chief Dan Copeland. “If the weather continues the way it is, it will probably be moving to extreme by the end of the week.” The chief said a mild winter combined with a low snow pack and a warm dry summer so far has increased the risk of forest or interface fire. At Monday’s coun-
cil meeting, Copeland announced a ban on all types of burning in the municipality. That includes, agricultural or land clearing, residential backyard, and camp or cooking fires. The department has also cancelled all existing fire permits for agricultural land waste. The fire rating for Burns Bog, the watershed and nature park has been set at extreme. With the high risk of fire, fire crews are now conducting daily patrols of high-risk areas, such as Watershed Park, the nature reserve and Centennial Beach.
the additional properties are added to the conservation zone. She also noted there needs to be collaboration and agreement among all the partners, a process that’s now underway. Not included in the proposal is the inclusion of 500 acres owned by MK Delta Lands, the largest private landowner at the bog.

“We’ve also been getting our crews to go out to areas where we can get a good visible shot of the Burns Bog area,” said deputy chief Paul Scholfield. The entire bog area is now closed to the public and Metro Vancouver has cancelled all permits allowing entrance and will be conducting daily patrols of the area. “Right now we’ve got a helicopter company on standby if anything comes in so we’re prepared to go at a moment’s notice the idea being that if we see anything we’ll hit it as fast and as hard as we can,” Scholfield said.

A prostate cancer fundraising campaign launch event was held for Motorcycle Ride for Dad - Westcoast on Monday at Delta municipal hall. One of this year’s rides, a police escorted parade with motorcycle enthusiasts and supporters, will depart from South Delta Baptist Church in Tsawwassen on Aug. 28. “This year we have lofty goals of not only raising funds and awareness for prostate cancer research but also getting as many riders out as possible,” said Motorcycle Ride for Dad - Westcoast chair Mike Callaghan. This will be the third year the organization has held an event in the Vancouver area. Motorcycle Ride for Dad began in 2000 in Ontario and is now in 30 cities throughout Canada. To date more than $5 million has been raised to fight prostate cancer, the most common type of cancer in men.

Substitute Newspaper Carriers Needed This Summer
CHUNG CHOW
Organizers and researchers from the Vancouver Prostate Centre were on hand to launch the fundraising campaign for Motorcycle Ride for Dad - Westcoast on Monday. “There is 800,000 people in Canada living with the disease who don’t know it. The key is to get them checked,” said Callaghan. Organizers also presented, from last year’s proceeds, a donation of $95,750 to the Vancouver Prostate Centre on Monday. “The support that comes from the Motorcycle Ride
for Dad is critical to establishing funding support to allow investigators to pursue new, novel ideas,” said Michael Cox, a senior scientist at the centre. He said the funding helps scientists pursue new diagnostic tests, new blood tests and new decision making programs to help men decided how they should
best be treated or whether they should be treated. “You can have the best idea in the world but if you don’t have the money to do the work, you can’t even test it. They’re really making possible what can’t be done any other way.” For more details visit www.motorcycleridefordad. org.

These days, when I am not working or sleeping or hollering at the sons to CLEAN UP THEIR ROOMS, I am apt to be doing something else: looking lovingly at the Weber. The Weber is a new addition to the family. The Weber is hot and black and pretty much always turned on. The Weber is a barbecue. The Weber does things our previous barbecues did not. It works, for one thing. It does not threaten to kill us, for another. Let’s just say we have had a string of barbecues that were intent on taking out the family, if not all of South Delta. “I’m going to put on the steaks,” my husband would inform me. “Better go inside.” And so I would. unevenly.” No kidding. They had been, every time, on account of the fact most of our barbecues – no, ALL of our barbecues – had one burner that cooked with the intensity of a blow torch and another that burned with the intensity of a cigarette lighter. “Do we have to eat these?” the children would ask. “Yes,” I’d snap. “And just be thankful you’re still alive.” Enter the Weber: the big, black, hunk a hunk of burning love. “Oh,” I said the other day. “I so love this thing.” Mr. Barbecue Man nodded. Mr. Barbecue Man, who had convinced me that it was time to get rid of the death machines, stood there with a plate of steaks. “It’s nice,” he said. “Don’t you think?” I think so, indeed. And not simply because the steaks taste good. But because we’re still around to eat them.

retreat to the lower levels of the house, and drag the kids there with me. Had we had an underground bunker, we might have well gone there. “Let’s go, boys!” I’d holler. “Downstairs! Dad’s turning on the barbecue!” Turning on the barbecue meant opening the propane tank, standing back and hurling matches at the grill. In our experience, the starter buttons never worked. Too often, the match thing didn’t either. “Is it on?” I’d holler from our makeshift shelter. “Because I can really smell propane!!! Are you still alive up there???” Let’s just say we had our close calls. Our barbecues – never had a Weber, I might point out – tended to smoke, oh, kinda like a bonfire on steroids. Let’s just say we would have been easily spotted had we been lost on a deserted island. “Rats,” my husband would complain after taking the meat off the grill. “These steaks look like they’ve been cooked

Delta author and professional children’s storyteller Laura Thomas, a.k.a. Agent Story, is challenging billionaire Kevin O’Leary’s statement that “nothing matters more than money.” Around the time Canada was hosting the G20, Thomas e-mailed a question to the CBC News Network show The Lang and O’Leary Exchange asking O’Leary what three things he would teach a Canadian five-year-old kid about money. “A week earlier on the program,” said Thomas, “O’Leary mentioned that we should be teaching fiscal responsibility to fiveyear-olds. I had just started promoting my new Agent Story financial literacy show, so I jumped at the chance to e-mail my question.” The producer loved
Thomas’ question and not only wanted to use it for the inbox segment of the show, but wanted her to be on air to ask it. O’Leary’s answer, which aired during the last three minutes of the July 6 show, consisted of statements such as “nothing matters more than money” and “try to make as much money as you can before you die.” Thomas was disappointed, but not entirely surprised as O’Leary is known for his money-first attitude on the popular entrepreneurial shows Dragon’s Den and Shark Tank. Though she has not had an opportunity to respond directly, Thomas has taken her more practical ideas about money to YouTube and started her own video series called Money and Me with Agent Story. “I was planning to do
these short videos anyway, but after hearing O’Leary’s ridiculous answer I decided to add an interview segment to the end of each video that makes fun of the idea that nothing matters more than money.” Thomas’ first Money and Me video teaches kids what a job is. At the end of the video she asks a toilet what matters more than money. The toilet, which is the voice of her six-yearold daughter Ella-Rose, answers: “water.” “I can see where O’Leary is coming from,” Thomas said. “But he is so extreme. As Agent Story I can help build kids’ financial literacy and at the same time show them that while money is important there are many things that matter more than money.” To find links to CBC’s Lang and O’Leary show

July 28, 2010 The Delta Optimist A15 Feedback
It’s still up in the air where a new concession will be built at Centennial Beach. Metro Vancouver, which has a lease from Delta to operate the beach, wants to put a concession at the parking lot
further back from the beach while the municipality prefers it to be near the playground that’s been recently expanded. The Optimist asked:
Where should a new concession go?
Donna Telford Marketing strategy, put it close to the playground. Kids will be influencing the parents.
Brenda Fergusson They’re talking about a concession where they can build a restaurant later. I hope they do ... with a beautiful place like this it’d be nice to have a nice place to go to show off. I don’t think it should be by the playground.
You can have your say on this issue by taking part in our web poll at www. delta-optimist.com
Ben Wagner Around here (where the current concession is). Either replace this one or ... improve it.
Matt Jutras Down the beach a bit near the area where the skimboarders go. This [area] can get kind of crowded.
Connor Edinger I agree with what Matt said. They closed a shop in Boundary Bay where all the houses are. So there’s no store down there. If they either built a concession there or further down the beach, that’d be good.
Last week we asked you:
What do you think of the lawsuit against BCLC? • 77.78% said the lawsuit has no chance. • 11.11% said the lawsuit has somewhat of a chance.
• 11.11% said the lawsuit has a good chance.

Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words I grew up in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and have been playing football since I was in the seventh grade. From very early on, I knew I wanted to play professional football and focusing on that goal kept me motivated to do well in high school and get in to university so I’d have an opportunity to realize my dream. After 10 seasons with the Lions, I still love coming to work every day and doing whatever I can on offence to help this club win a championship for the CFL’s best fans. Growing up, I saw firsthand what could happen to kids who don’t stay focused on their goals so I’m very aware of making sure my own children are surrounded by positive influences, whether it’s encouraging my teenage son to do well in high school or coaching my younger son’s football team. It’s also a big reason why I love taking part in our club’s community programs. Among the programs I take part in, I would say the Lions Pride program is one of the most rewarding because I’ve seen firsthand what happens to a young person’s life when they make the right choices. The decisions a youth makes today will affect them tomorrow and I take pride in knowing I may have helped direct one of these young people down a positive path.

Golden season complete for Islanders Pee Wee Bs avenege earlier loss to become just the fourth Delta Minor Lacrosse team to win a provincial title MARK BOOTH
It took a little fine tuning for the Delta Pee Wee “B” Islanders to complete their golden season in thrilling fashion. The Islanders made the most of home floor advantage at last weekend’s Pee Wee Provincial Lacrosse Championships, capturing the gold medal in their division with a 10-5 win over the Saanich Tigers. The result comes after Delta took Lower Mainland League regular season honours with a 16-3-1 record and also finished on top of the podium at tournaments in Kelowna and Port Coquitlam. The provincial title is just the fourth in the history of Delta Minor Lacrosse and the first-ever at the Pee Wee level. “It’s an unbelievable group of kids,” said Islanders head coach Dave Cochrane, a former player in the Western Lacrosse Association with the Coquitlam Adanacs. “I’ve been with most of them for the past four or five years and they have improved
each season.” The win over Saanich also avenged Delta’s only loss of the championships. The Island squad came away with a 10-9 victory when the two teams met last Friday to open roundrobin play at Sungod Arena. The Islanders responded to the defeat with wins over Juan de Fuca (11-8) and Semiahmoo (9-2) to earn second spot in their group and earn a semi-final berth. A rematch with Saanich was secured with a 9-5 victory over Peninsula. The locals made adjustments to their defensive game plan and the end result was a dominating performance. “We had never seen them before and it caught us a little off guard,” said Cochrane. “They like to put pressure on us bringing the ball up the floor and had the best perimeter shooters we have seen all season.” The Islanders applied their own pressure the length of the floor which resulted in less time for the Tigers to set-up in the offensive zone. The defensive formation also stepped out to help take away the shooting lanes.

Josh Vaughn was selected to the all-star team, while Sean Cochrane was given the Fair Play Award. The Islanders roster also includes: Wyatt Elmer, Thomas Morrison, Cory McIver, Joey Tutkaluke, Cody Johnstone, Jake Nolan, Hayden Dance, Seth Ogilvie, Grant McDonald, Joseph Knight, Nick Bradley, Nic Hefford, Charlie Moore, Dylan Skujins and Adam Husdon. The head coach was John Evanson, with assistants Jack Bandstra and Tim Siltberg. Unfortunately for the A1 Islanders, their draw went to form and they failed to win any of their five roundrobin games. They were at least competitive in losses to gold medalist Coquitlam #1 (10-6) and runners-up Ridge Meadows (10-7). Ryan Jones was named to the all-star team and Josh Murphy received the Fair Play Award.

The locals also entered the tournament with high expectations after going 191 during the regular season. Ironically their run to the gold medal game was the opposite of the Pee Wee “B” squad as they opened play with a 6-4 win over Langley. Other victories came against Surrey (6-5), Campbell River (7-2) and Surrey again in the semifinals (10-4). Jordan Hamming was named to the all-star team and Jamil Walji took home the Fair Play Award. Saskatchewan next stop for B.C. champion Invaders South Delta Invaders have had little time to bask in their glory as they get set to head to the prairies. The rep girls fastpitch team captured the provincial Midget “B” championship two weekends ago in Sicamous and will be heading to Unity, Sask. for the Western Canadian Championships starting Friday. The hastily planned trip meant no time for fund raising. The Invaders are accepting donations to help offset all the costs Anyone in the community that would like to make a donation can contact team manager Angela Mackenzie at angieawningswest@telus. net or 604 523-0027 for details and a sponsorship letter. The road to Saskatchewan began in Sicamous where South
Delta played outstanding ball from start to finish to bring home gold. Battling warm temperatures and strong opponents, the locals opened with a win over Ridge Meadows ’93, then slipped past Nanaimo 6-5. They completed a perfect run in round-robin play with wins over South Surrey and the Valley View Raiders — a strong opponent from Vancouver Island. With eight of the 16 teams advancing to the double knockout championship round, South Delta anxiously waited for the standings to be finalized. It was determined they would face the Raiders again. They continued where they had left off and with strong defense and excellent hitting resulting in an opening playoff win. Sunday’s schedule
Provincial Midget “B” champions South Delta ’91 Invaders began bright and early with a highly anticipated showdown with the Ridge Meadows Rage in a battle of unbeaten teams. South Delta’s hot bats matched the weather as the girls produced a huge win to earn a semi-final date

with Nanaimo. The Invaders’ depth of the talent was proving to be a definite advantage. No matter what line up the coaches jotted down, everyone on the team contributed in a positive manner, not allowing the opposition a chance to catch their breath. A clean victory over a classy Nanaimo bunch propelled the Invaders to the championship game. The extra rest that the team had earned by advancing undefeated through the playoffs was a determining factor in winning the gold medal. The opponent in the final was again Ridge Meadows,
who were playing their fifth game of the day. South Delta remained on top of its game and produced its eighth straight win of the tournament. “We are extremely proud of the entire group for their commitment to each other, and acceptance of team values during this and each season,” said Invaders coach Doug Harris. “It’s the ninth season playing rep ball together for half the players in this group. Their complete dedication, along with acceptance of new team members who have fit in beautifully, has formed a team that all South Delta can be very proud to call
their own. “Juggling team time commitments, along with their work and full time school schedules has contributed to develop an outstanding group of young ladies.” The Invaders roster includes: Alisha Maini, Alana Westerhof, Andrea Husband, Sam Schmunk, Katie Harris, Ashley Baron, Quin Ellis, Courtney Baerg, Samantha Mah, Kajsa Moore, Kelsey Millman, Danica Jayme, Lauren Mackenzie and Brooke Lemire. Gary Fast and Jamie Husband round out the coaching staff.

1 - What is is BC’s provincial flower?
Now that they have a playoff gorilla off their back, the Ladner Pioneers will be looking to force a fifth and deciding game when they host the Tri-City Bandits on Thursday night. The Pioneers staved off elimination with a 9-6 victory on Monday in Port Coquitlam. It was the first postseason win over their longtime West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association rival in 10 games, dating back over three seasons. The two-time defending champion
Bandits opened the semi-final series with a 13-12 home floor triumph last Friday, then produced a 7-5 victory on Sunday in Ladner. They looked poised to complete the sweep when they jumped out to a 3-1 first period lead in game three. However, the Pioneers battled back to tie the game after 20 minutes, then took a 7-5 advantage into the final period. “We played as a team and made good use of our speed,” said Ladner head coach Ross Frehlick. “We finally have some confidence against them and now we take the series

back home.” Matt Morehouse, who has taken over between the pipes for longtime starter Rob Cook, was a standout in net. Spencer Martin paced the attack with a pair of goals, while Kevin Olsen, Warren Fiddler, Greg Duncan and Mike Leong, into an empty net, also scored. The Pioneers played without Gary Bining, Trent Smalley, Shawn Williams and Jordan Guindon who were all injured during the first two games of the series. Game time tomorrow night is 8 p.m. at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
