A fourth candidate has entered the upcoming municipal by-election. Longtime farmer Ian Paton announced this week he intends to run for the seat left vacant following the death of George Hawksworth this spring. “My dad (Ian Paton Sr.) was a really community-minded person and we’ve been in the community a long time, so thought this would be the right time to step into some pretty big shoes of George Hawksworth and maybe add something to our community,” said Paton. The UBC graduate spent a short time teaching before moving on to a full-time career in auctioneering, in addition to farming as the owner-operator of Paton Holsteins Dairy Farm Ltd.

“About 10 years ago I sold my dairy heard, but I’m still a farmer, of course. But it gives me more time to be able to focus on council issues, so I thought this is as a good a time as any to take a run at it and try to add something positive,” he said.

Paton said while Mayor Lois Jackson and the rest of council have done a good job fighting for the interests of farmers in Delta, local government needs someone from the farming community, which hasn’t had a voice at the civic political level for almost a quarter of a century. Active in various community fundraising endeavours over the years, Paton, a Ladner resident,

said he knew Hawksworth, always respecting his ideas and the way he carried himself at council. Coun. Scott Hamilton said he’s pleased Paton has decided to run for the council seat. Hamilton ran in the last election on a slate with Jackson and Robert Campbell and said all three will support Paton. “He’s exactly the right person for this Delta council,” said Hamilton. Also running for the seat are Sylvia Bishop, Sandeep Pandher and Kathleen Higgins. The by-election will be held Sept. 18. Delta uses the provincial voters list to determine who is eligible to vote. New concession still in limbo

With Metro Vancouver’s restaurant idea on hold, battle is now over where to locate building along beach BY

It’s still not clear when and where a new concession building will be built at Centennial Beach. At a meeting of Metro Vancouver’s parks committee last week, it was agreed the potential location for a new building should go back to staff for further analysis, said Coun. Scott Hamilton, a member of the committee. “There are still more issues that have to be ironed out before we move forward with it, so we want it done right,” Hamilton told the Optimist this week. “You want to be able to keep your eye on the kids when you can. You don’t want to be disturbing maybe environmentally sensitive areas. There are some people with a school of thought of leaving it where it is and razing the old one and putting a new one in it’s place, but you might want to disperse the beach population around the beach rather than having the people congregating at one corner,” he said. One of the issues playing a major role is the potential for a destination-style restaurant that could be added to the building in the future,

In an interview earlier this year, Mayor Lois Jackson said the regional district agreed 16 years ago the building was at the end of its useful life. Delta again asked Metro Vancouver, which has a

lease from the municipality to operate the popular beach, to finally replace the dilapidated building. Metro Vancouver had been planning to build a new washroom/concession building that would be connected to a destination-style restaurant. However, after about two years, Metro Vancouver wasn’t able to find a suit-

able private partner for the restaurant and the plan was subsequently shelved. The most recent stumbling block with the new building is the proposed location. The regional district wants it at the parking lot further back from the beach, while Delta prefers to see it near the playground that’s been

expanded with equipment for children with physical disabilities. At Delta council last week, parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz, noting a new concession building is part of an overall master plan to upgrade the park, said the issue has dragged on long enough and it was time to get on with replacing the old building.

He said the beach has about a million visitors every year and having the washroom located so far away at the parking lot wouldn’t make it a good amenity. His report to council noted the regional district preferred the parking lot location to protect its investment should Delta terminate the park lease. Council agreed Delta would reimburse Metro Vancouver for the depreciated value of a new building, based on the original investment and life expectancy of the asset. Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club member Harry Caine, who helped spearhead the playground expansion, isn’t supportive of the proposal to move the new building near the playground, though, saying the building should be set further away. Caine said the layout would crowd the playground that’s been extremely busy since it expanded. “It doesn’t make any sense. All they have to do is move it over to the other side of the walkway,” he said. A working group formed by Metro Vancouver couldn’t come to a consensus on the location.

It’s been six decades since the start of the Korean War and local veteran Bob Orrick recently got a firsthand look at how far South Korea has come since then. He was in the country for a week-long visit in April and along with other veterans, received a 60th anniversary medallion from the South Korean government. The country had been “devastated” 60 years ago, said Orrick, a Ladner resident. “It had been overrun, except for the Pusan [now called Busan] perimeter, by the communist North Koreans. In 60 years, which is not a long time, it’s gone from that to having one of the world’s largest economies,” he said. “It’s such a progressive, forward-think-

ing country right now.” Orrick spent about a year serving in Korea serving as a communicator aboard the HMCS Athabaskan, one of the destroyers the Canadian Navy sent. On his trip in April Orrick stayed in Seoul and recalled looking out his hotel window and seeing busy streets with numerous buses rolling along. He called it a huge and “very modern” city. “As a Korean War veteran, I’m very proud of the Koreans for having done what they have done.” Orrick visited the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan, the demilitarized zone, including the Bridge of No Return, and Kapyong (now called Gapyong), a site where Canadians and other UN forces fought against a counter-offensive in April

1951. About 27,000 Canadians served in Korea and over 500 died. Fewer than 8,000 are alive today it’s estimated, Orrick said. He served as public information officer for the Korea Veterans Association of Canada for three years in the early 1990s and went on to write a book, Indelible Memories, a retrospective look at the conflict. Orrick plans to be in Brampton, Ontario next Tuesday for a commemorative event at the Korea War Veterans Wall of Remembrance. It will mark the first official Korean War Veterans Day in Canada thanks to a motion in the Senate. July 27 also marks the date an armistice was signed to bring about a ceasefire. Delta hopes the provincial government will agree to make it easier to get rid of a decades-old zoning anomaly that allows the building of far bigger houses than what’s permitted today. Enacted in the 1970s prior to official community plans, land use contracts were the norm in communities like Delta. They were essentially contracts between municipal councils and landowners wanting to

develop. The contracts tied the property owners to the requirements of old and, in many cases, now obsolete zoning regulations. The problem the current Delta council has with the contracts is that properties still under them don’t have to abide by current zoning bylaws and council is unable to discharge them without the consent of the property owner. contract was written, said there are about 4,000 such documents still in effect covering large swaths of neighbourhoods throughout Delta. “We’re just slowly picking away at them. A lot of them have a restriction for tree cutting, so when people come in wanting a tree cutting permit, if there’s a land use contract we can then discharge it so we can initiate the permit,” said Leathem. He said almost everything in the land use contracts usually doesn’t line up with today’s modern zoning. “Sometimes there’s a reference to a zone in a particular year, so there’s quite a few in Delta, for example, that refer to the 1966 zoning bylaw provisions. It’s obviously changed a lot since ’66. It supercedes our zoning,” he said. The issue has been brought to the forefront recently in Richmond, which has Delta’s support in trying to get rid of land use contracts. According to Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, the land use contracts in his city permit a greater building height and density than

is permitted in current zoning, including three-storey “mega houses” in singlefamily neighbourhoods. In one Richmond neighbourhood covered by land use contracts residents got together to design controls to limit the height and density of new houses. Richmond will submit a resolution at this September’s Union of B.C. Municipalities convention asking the provincial government to allow municipalities to discharge land use contracts for entire areas if 51 per cent of homeowners are in support. Leathem said Delta supports the motion because the rate of discharge here has been slow, usually on an individual basis. An example of problems created by the contracts occurred recently when council dealt with a North Delta property owner wanting to build a house that drew the ire of several neighbours. The property on Garfield Drive is under an old land use contract, thus the property owner is entitled to build a home up to 8,000square-feet, much larger than what is permitted in the current zoning.

The little beetle with the big name is actually an endangered species in B.C. with fragile populations living in South Delta. “Isn’t that a great name? Whoever came up with that did it right,” said Jennifer Heron, an invertebrate specialist with B.C. Ministry of the Environment. “It really is a distinct insect plus it has the cool name. Seabrook shares cup with kids TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW People often say that National Hockey League players are the most grounded of all the big-time professional athletes. This likely has something to do with the fact many of them are good ol’ Canadian boys with small town roots, but it’s a reputation they have most certainly earned over the years. The NHL and the Hockey Hall of Fame have created an endearing tradition of allowing each member of the cup-winning team to spend a day with hockey’s holy grail. They get to share it with family and friends, those who supported them on their journey to the big leagues, but in true hockey player fashion, it has also become customary to extend the invitation to their entire hometowns. Tsawwassen’s Brent Seabrook, a star defenceman with the cup-winning Chicago Blackhawks, continued that tradition last Friday when he brought the silver chalice to the masses at the South Delta Recreation Centre. Seabrook, a South Delta Minor Hockey Association grad, set aside two hours for young hockey players to get up close and personal with the cup and then another hour for minor lacrosse players to do the same. After three hours with the kids, he opened up the festivities to the public. My son was lucky enough to form part of the lacrosse contingent, so when his team rolled in for a group photo with Seabrook and the cup, Tsawwassen’s own NHL star had been at it for the better part of two-and-a-half hours. Yet every time another team was given the green light to move to the photography area, there he was ready to greet them, making sure he shook every kid’s hand, before sitting patiently while the photographer rearranged the youngsters for the shot. After a couple of snaps, Seabrook chatted with each group, which meant having to carry conversation after conversation with star-struck youngsters. He mentioned how he liked my son’s jersey number — they both wear seven — so I asked my otherwise talkative 12-year-old what he said in return when told it was a good number. “Ya,” was all he could muster. Well, at least he didn’t monopolize his time. The Stanley Cup is an iconic piece of hockey, and thus Canadian, history, so to see it in your local rink is a bit surreal. It’s mind-blowing to think of all the players who have held it aloft and then to see it sitting there in the South Delta Recreation Centre. We have Brent Seabrook to thank for that — and for adding further credence to the reputation that National Hockey Leaguers are truly good guys.

Cohen Inquiry compromised by appointment’s history JOHN CUMMINS MP’S REPORT In April the Cohen Inquiry contracted Mike Staley to conduct a review of DFO’s management of Fraser sockeye to guide and assist its legal staff in structuring public hearings where DFO officials will be called to account for their management of the fishery. Staley has been an advisor and advocate for various aboriginal groups, including the Cheam Fishery Authority, B.C. Aboriginal Fisheries Commission, the First Nations Summit Task Groups, the Fraser River Aboriginal Fisheries Secretariat, the First Nations Marine Society and First Nations throughout B.C. The inquiries conducted by John Fraser and Justice Bryan Williams all identified massive problems in the aboriginal fishery. They identified widespread illegal sale of food fish and fishing in unauthorized and illegal fisheries that threatened the future viability of the fishery. Staley’s report into DFO’s man-

agement of Fraser sockeye will go to the heart of the work assigned to the Cohen Inquiry, which is to investigate DFO’s management of Fraser River sockeye. Staley has refused to show a commitment to a fishery where there is room for everyone and where everyone must obey the law. In 2006 he appeared before the House of Commons Fisheries Committee as a staffer for the Cheam Fishing Authority. When questioned if he supported or opposed illegal sale of fish, he appeared indifferent to the longtime problem that has undermined fisheries management since the early 1990s, stating, “As a biologist, it doesn’t matter [to me].” When asked if DFO should do everything it can to stop illegal sales of fish caught for food purposes, he refused to answer, stating, “I don’t need to answer that question.” The Williams Inquiry saw another side of Staley in 2005 where it was clear that Staley, the biologist, appeared to support weak and ineffective enforcement. He requested that Justice Williams ask fishery officers about DFO’s Cheam safety protocol that forced them to give advance notice before coming to observe Cheam fishing, advance notice that allowed time for illegal activity to be quietly shut down

How can someone who exhibits such bias, who promotes weak and ineffective enforcement, who refuses to acknowledge illegal fishing activity is a problem and who refuses to even acknowledge that DFO should actively respond to illegal activity, the very problems that confront the inquiry, now provide advice to the inquiry on DFO’s management of the fishery? If Cohen does not understand that it is fundamentally wrong for a judicial inquiry to use (i) DFO staff who have managed the fishery, (ii) staff from commercial, recreational and aboriginal fishing organizations or (iii) contractors that regularly work for either the department or fishing organizations, then the Cohen Inquiry does not have the capacity to undertake the job set out for it by the prime minister last November. The appointment of Mike Staley adds to a growing awareness in the fishery that the Cohen Inquiry is off-track and a fear that what was to be the most significant investigation into the department’s management of the B.C. fishery, since the federal government took over responsibility for fisheries management in the 1870s, is now headed for a train wreck unless corrective action is taken immediately.

Kwantlen research is at odds with public’s wish Editor: Re: Kwantlen defends relationship with Century, July 17 According to your article, Jason Dyer, Kwantlen’s executive director of research and scholarship, seems to think it is OK to carry out “research” into agricultural urbanism on the Southlands for the benefit of Century Group. The rationale for this is apparently the concept that Kwantlen has to perform more community-oriented

academic ventures. While it is true that B.C. universities have been encouraged in recent decades to participate more in their respective communities, I do not think this was expected to include activities, on behalf of private corporations or individuals, which clearly are against the expressed wishes of the community. How many more times do the people of Tsawwassen have to emphasize their opposition to Southlands

developments as proposed by Century Group? B.C. universities and colleges have, in general, responded to the calls for more community-oriented research by performing research that benefits those communities. I would like to read Dyer’s justification for proposing to carry out research activities that are contrary to the wishes of the majority of the residents of Tsawwassen. James Hudson

Superhero fishes keys from drain

Editor: On Friday, July 16 while dropping my granddaughter off at her ballet camp, I dropped my keys while unloading my precious cargo from my car. Normally this is no big deal, but as it would happen, my keys found their way through a sewer grate. I panicked. My house keys! My car keys! My mailbox key! My day had gone down the drain. to escalating construction costs, the scope of the project was cut back so much that a much larger, $1.5 billion cheaper LRT network, with much higher capacity, could have been built instead. The Light Rail Committee and Rail For the Valley, in conjunction with several transportation experts, will be offering a much cheaper and proven alternative to hugely expensive light-metro in the form of TramTrain. TramTrain is simply a light rail vehicle that can operate on existing railways and on its own tracks, greatly reducing “rail” transit costs while at the same

time providing a much larger light rail network. As an example, for the cost of a SkyTrain Evergreen Line, we could build a Vancouver to Chilliwack TramTrain and a Vancouver to Maple Ridge TramTrain. A larger rail network, servicing more destinations at a cheaper cost, should be TransLink’s number one planning goal. Sadly, what I see from the ivory towers on Kingsway is more of the same, plans for hugely expensive metro lines, with no realistic way to fund them. Malcolm Johnston Light Rail Committee

Green readers talk whole other kind of language BARBARA GUNN

LIVING MATTERS I know how to read a paper. I know how to read a book. But I do not know anything about this business of reading the greens. “Now before you putt,” my husband says, “don’t forget to read the green.” We are on the golf course. Our balls are on the green. And my husband is giving me a lesson. Never mind that I haven’t asked for one. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I tell the husband. “Sure you do,” he tells me. No. I do not. Crouch down a bit, the husband tells me. Look for what are called the undulations. Then decide if you ought to aim six inches to the right of the hole or two feet

from the left. Problem is, I suspect there’s a bit of science involved in this process. And I was never what you could call a science scholar. I could never work a Bunsen burner. I could never remember all those stupid element tables. I could never create an experiment that made it to the science fair. My forte was in English. But I digress. One would assume there would be more English than science involved in the reading of the greens, given the part about reading. Turns out, no. “What am I supposed to be looking for?” I ask the husband. I am crouching down, the way professionals crouch down in tournaments, with their caddies at their side. “All I see is the hole. And my ball. The ball I want to get into the hole.” The husband sighs. The lesson is not going the way he intended. The student is decidedly reading-challenged. “This,” hisses the hus-

band, “is the delicate part of golf. Remember what they say: Drive for show, putt for dough.” Fact is, I am not at all familiar with the expression. Fact is, I will never — ever — be putting for dough. Those who are putting for dough — I think they’re called professionals — may well get into the reading thing, but it’s no big deal to me. “OK,” says the exasperated teacher. “Just hit the thing.” About time, I think. I rise from the crouching position and stand over the ball. I look at the hole. I look at the ball. I look at the hole again. I tap the ball. It rolls. Three feet from the hole. Two feet from the hole. Eight inches from the hole. And ... it drops. Granted, that won’t happen every time I putt. Indeed, it likely won’t happen 18 out of 20 times I putt. But this day, by golly, I sank the ball. And I hadn’t been reading a thing.

St. Stephen’s United, the small and historical church in the heart of East Delta, not only has played a key part of the community for many years, but also plays a very important role in the lives of my family and my grandparents, the Patons. This place of worship has been around since 1891. My family has been in attendance almost every Sunday for many of those years, and also has helped maintain the heritage building. With the church being a critical part of East Delta in its early days when it neighboured the elementary school, it is no wonder that many think highly of this building, with myself being one of them. It has a lot of meaning to me, as it has been the site of my baptism, my confirmation, and my parent’s marriage, and I personally feel honoured to be linked to this great heritage site. On Christmas Eve, the special and unique service attracts many members of the community, even though they are not part of the congregation. Every single service though is so relaxed and personalized, as the congregation is like a family, one who comes together every Sunday to be comforted by each other’s presence in its intimate sanctuary. That is just one of the many reasons why this homey little church will always have a place in my heart, just as it always has been in the hearts of many Delta residents.

Rehearsals underway for full-length production of Jacques Plante story Sidekick Players’ Evening of Comedy played to sold-out audiences last month, providing a wonderful theatre experience for a pair of new directors. Lisa Gach directed The Whole Shebang, while Taryn Kleeband was in charge of Chester, You Owe My Bird An Apology. The festival ended on a high note with an awards presentation. Favourites of the audience were Marissa Robinson and Todd-Elliot Gates for their portrayals of the “wife and husband” in The Whole Shebang and to the cast and crew of Chester, You Owe My Bird An Apology for best costumes. It was a close vote, but The Whole Shebang pulled ahead and was chosen best production. Sidekick is now in rehearsals for its next fulllength production, Jacques Plante and the Parkdale Knitting League by Paul McLaughlin of Toronto. “I have a very strong cast and the talent is remarkable,” said director Carroll Allan. “We are all looking forward to bringing this wonderful script to life.” Allan said there are many challenges in this script as McLaughlin worked as close to fact as possible about Plante. “There are things about Plante that I think will surprise the audience,” she said. “He really did change the game and the role of a goalie in the NHL. “We are very fortunate to have a replica of the original mask he wore and a vintage Canadiens jersey that were on display during the one-acts,” said Allan, “and we hope to have more NHL memorabilia on display dur-

Lucas Walker, a transplanted Montréaler, will be taking on the role of Jacques Plante. He will be joined in the cast by Robb Lucy as coach and announcer, Lisa Gach as the endearing groupie Violet, Dean Day as Fred (Violet’s husband) and Andy Bathgate, and Paula Rennie as Jacqueline and Raymonde Plante. “The challenge isn’t only with conquering a French Canadian accent for some, but also dual roles,” said Allan. More fond memories of Empire Stadium

Last week we featured the winning entry in our Fondest Memories of Empire Stadium contest. This week, we are pleased to present submissions from the runners-up. Once again, thank you to everyone who participated. From Janice Bobic, Burnaby: I remember the ﬁrst BC Lions football game I went to at the Empire Stadium, in 1958 I believe, when I was 10 years old. I sat with my mom, dad and sister on the grassy hill on the north side on a pleasant sunny evening. As we were sitting there, eagerly anticipating the start of the game, suddenly some jets came screaming overhead directly over the stadium from the north. I began screaming frantically, trying to hide under my dad’s arm, and crying, “They’re going to drop bombs on us!” Dad said, “No, no, no, that’s part of the show.” My fear gradually subsided and I recovered from this “trauma” as the football game started, and excitement took over as the players ran out while the announcer called their names. I remember Willie Fleming — how he could run — and he was the family favourite. In a subsequent year, we received some original numbered photographs autographed by Willie Fleming and the other Lions players. Also we received another set of photos of autographed pictures, individually numbered, with corporate sponsors printed on the backs. I still have all these photos, and eventually plan to sell them by auction. I was there at Empire Stadium when the Beatles came to Vancouver, and Diana Ross and the Supremes opened the show with their metallic gold skinny dresses ﬂashing in the lights. My sister and I were sitting on the northeast bleachers, but with all the girls screaming throughout the whole show, we never heard a bit of the Beatles’ music. As we were heading out after the show, our mom and auntie were waiting, standing outside the stadium door when the Beatles ran right in front of them making their getaway from the stadium. From Gordon Lew, New Westminster In the late seventies/early eighties, as a little kid, I was just learning to love and understand the game of CFL football, the only sport that my Dad watched ever since arriving in Canada. We would watch all the games, especially the Lions on TV, but we could not afford to buy tickets to watch them at Empire Stadium. Soon, they had a promotion where you could go get free admission into Empire Stadium if you presented a Nalley’s chip bag

or box. I remember going down to the Woodward’s Food Floor with my Dad to buy our Nalley’s chips, and then using it to watch the Lions games. I remember sitting in the end zone on a hard park bench, on the north end of the stadium, but I did not care as we were watching the Lions live. I remember many kids behind the benches where we were sitting playing their own game of football on the grass with a Nerf football, having a great time. They probably missed half the game! There were a lot of dads with their kids there. There were sunny days, rainy days (too many) and many cold nights. In the winter, I remember my dad would always buy me a hot chocolate in the third quarter, just before the concession stand behind us would close, so that I would make it OK to the end of the game. I remember watching and idolizing many exciting players: Leon Bright, Larry Key, Joe Paopao, Glen Jackson, Larry Crawford, Lui Passaglia — so many great players and so many exciting games. But my favourite memory of Empire Stadium was having my dad bring me down to the stadium to watch the games with him, father and son hanging out together watching the Lions. From Leslie Cummings, Delta: My fondest memory of Empire Stadium is back in the mid-’50s when I was about nine years old. My dad and his friend were going to a BC Lions football game and I asked if I could go, too. My dad looked surprised that his little girl would want to go to a football game, but after just a moment’s hesitation, he said, “Yes!” Of course I knew nothing about football, but it was simply the fact that I got a “date” with my dad when my two sisters had to stay home with Mom. I remember feeling so grown-up watching the game with these two men, but the real excitement was to come

when the game was over. Dad had bought me a drink during the game, but I didn’t know what to do with the paper cup. I didn’t see a garbage can anywhere, so as we were walking out among the crowd, I just tossed my cup into the air ahead of me. It hit a man on the back of his head and he stopped, turned around and said, “Hello!” to no one in particular. My dad and his friend stopped in their tracks, looking horriﬁed! I thought I was really in for it, but suddenly they both starting laughing like crazy. Dad said to me, “Do you know who you just hit on the head with that cup?” “No,” I answered, feeling terrible about the entire thing. Dad told me, “That was Ted Reynolds!” For those who might not know, Ted Reynolds was one of the most famous local sports broadcasting legends who, sadly, passed away last year at the age of 84. I don’t know if he ever remembered being hit on the head at that game, but I know that I’ll never forget it.

Former Pacer hoop star still going strong At the age of 35, Navi Sekhon continues to dominate at Dolphin Park Basketball Classic outdoor tournament BY

He has been a force on the basketball court for over 20 years and Navi Sekhon is showing no signs of slowing down. Sekhon already enjoys legendary status at Delta secondary where he led the Pacers to an Agrodome appearance in 1993 and owns all kinds of team scoring records, including 61 points in a single game. He also has earned a similar reputation at Western Canada’s premier outdoor summer tournament. Sekhon earned all-star honours in helping the XFalcons earn their third title in four years at the 25th annual Dolphin Park Classic in Richmond. The tournament attracts the top university and college talent in the province and even teams from the Seattle area. At 35 and a father of two, Sekhon continues to prove he can more than play with opponents who are typically 10 to 15 years his junior. “I started playing in 1998 and it’s been great,” smiled the Burnaby firefighter who has put on plenty of muscle compared to the lanky 6-foot-4 kid who was lethal from three-point range during his days as a Pacer. “There is always great talent here and everyone knows

this is the place to play in the summer.” Sekhon’s involvement in the tournament goes beyond the court as he is also a member of the organization committee that has faced its share of challenges in recent years. The tournament simply became too big for its original home at a tiny neighbourhood park on Dolphin Avenue and was asked by the City of Richmond to re-locate. The Thompson Community Centre stepped to the plate and a second outdoor court allowed for a women’s division to be added this year. However, organizers are now pondering another move to South Arm Park in 2011 where an outdoor court is being constructed. “That’s the rumour,” said Sekhon, who was recognized as one of the 25 most influential people in Dolphin’s rich history. “We would just like more of an intimate setting with more trees. There’s just not enough shade here.” Sekhon has developed a special chemistry with silky smooth point guard Randy Nohr who collected his third tournament MVP award. Months worth of recruiting, roster decisions and preparation will ultimately come down to a week worth of games for the Ladner Pioneers. After shaping their line-up to take a serious run at qualifying for next month’s President’s Cup national championships in Burnaby, the senior lacrosse team will determine its fate starting Friday.

The Pioneers will face two-time defending West Coast Senior Lacrosse League champions Tri-City Bandits in a best-offive semi-final series. With the first place Burnaby Burrards meeting Nanaimo in the othe final four match-up, this showdown will likely determined what other B.C. team will be be joining the Burrards in the national showcase event. “They’ve beaten us the last couple of years and we will be ready for them,” said

Ladner head coach Ross Frehlick. “I think we match-up well with them. Our defence is solid and we got guys who can put the ball in the net.” The Bandits swept the Pioneers the past two seasons thanks mainly to Ladner’s inability to put the ball in the net. Delta Lacrosse will be hosting teams from across B.C. for this week’s Provincial Pee Wee Championships. The five-day tournament will determine provincial champions in four different division, including three featuring the host association. Action gets underway today with the elite A1 level taking to the floor. The A1 Islanders managed to qualify for the highest tier in the province but finished well back in the standings. They will be looking to thrive in an underdog role, starting this afternoon (5:30 p.m.) when they battle Ridge Meadows in Ladner. Four of six teams will advance to the semi-finals on Saturday afternoon. The team is coached by Jason Jones who is enjoying an outstanding rookie season in the Western Lacrosse Association with the Coquitlam Adanacs, ranking eighth in league scoring with 55 points in 16 games. The Islanders roster includes his younger brother Ryan who will be playing for Team B.C. at next month’s Pee Wee National Championships in Whitby, Ontario. The A2 division will feature teams from Prince George, Ridge Meadows, Coquitlam, Kamloops, Nanaimo, Kelowna, Abbotsford and Chilliwack. Delta has an excellent chance of earning a medal at the “B” Level. The Islanders put together a solid regular season, finishing with a 16-3-1 record. Tom Robson took one big step forward towards locking up a roster spot on Canada’s National Junior Baseball Team. The 17-year-old right-handed pitcher from Ladner was outstanding as Canada trimmed the Torrington Titans of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League 4-3 last Wednesday in Connecticut. After surrendering a pair of runs in the opening inning due to a throwing error, Robson was virtually flawless the rest of the way, scattering five hits, walking two and recording eight strikeouts in six innings of work.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Brad on July 15, 2010. Our hearts are broken. Surrounded by family, Brad fought a courageous but short battle with cancer. Shirley died peacefully at home surrounded by love. Predeceased by her brother Leslie in 1967. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Glen, 2 daughters Cyndi (Don) of Ladner and Melinda (Kurt) of Nanaimo and 5 grandchildren, Rick, Jessica, Jakob, Andrea and Christine, sister-in-law Willy, nephews Stephen and Charles. Shirley was raised in Clinton, BC and attended Normal School in Victoria. After marrying Glen and teaching for a few years in Alberni, Victoria and Vancouver they moved to Ladner to raise their family. Shirley was an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels, Ladner United Church and the Delta Hospital Auxiliary, later in Nanaimo teaching the seashore unit with the University Women’s Club and with the United Church Women. We would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses, family and friends for their loving care and support. A memorial service will be held on July 24, 2010 at 3pm at St. Andrew’s United Church at 311 Fitzwilliam Street in Nanaimo . In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BC Cancer Foundation.
