Tsawwassen’s Brent Seabrook will bring the Stanley Cup to town this Friday.

Stanley Cup to pay visit courtesy of ’Hawks pair

The Stanley Cup is coming to town. Hockey’s holy grail will be in Delta tomorrow and Friday thanks to two members of the cup-winning Chicago Blackhawks. Tsawwassen’s Brent Seabrook and North Delta’s Troy Brouwer will each get their own day with the cup that will feature both private and public events. Tomorrow at 1 p.m., Brouwer will take the cup by motorcade from the North Delta Public Safety Building to Sungod Recreation Centre for an invitation-only event with minor hockey players. Seabrook will host a similar gathering for youngsters on Friday afternoon at the South Delta Recreation Centre, which will be followed at 4 p.m. by an opportunity for the public to view the cup. Both ’Hawks played their minor hockey in Delta, so they wanted to share the cup with the presentday youth of these organizations. Seabrook, a former minor lacrosse player, has also invited kids from the Delta Islanders. The two NHLers also have private events planned with family and friends.

Canadian champions crowned as thousands watch 10th edition of Tour de Delta BY

JESSICA KERR

Thousands flocked to watch world-class cycling last weekend during the 10th installment of the Tour de Delta. “It was perfect race weather for the athletes and the spectators,” said race director Mark Ernsting, who estimated the crowd at more than 5,000 over the three days. Ernsting attributed the good turnout to the beautiful weather, a quality field and some additions to this year’s program, including a performance by the Delta Police Pipe Band and the Kids Petit Prologue in North Delta Friday night. Another new aspect to this year’s event was the addition of the Canadian Criterium Championship. On Saturday,

European regular Svein Tuft narrowly missed winning the overall title. the Brenco Criterium in Ladner Village doubled as the national championship for both men and women. Young riders took both titles

this year. David Veilleux, a 22year-old from Quebec, captured the men’s crown in the final lap while Leah Kirchmann, a 20-yearold Winnipeg native, cut it even

closer by pulling away in the last 200 metres of the 40-lap race. Ernsting said organizers plan to apply to host the national championship again in the future. Veilleux, who rides for Kelly Benefit Strategies Pro Cycling, was also on the podium Sunday when he edged Svein Tuft by less than six seconds to win the overall Tour de Delta title. He also claimed the top young rider (under 23) award. In the women’s White Spot Road Race Sunday, local racer Claire Cameron, who was born and raised in Ladner, took the title with a sprint to the finish in the last 200 metres with her family cheering loudly from the sideline.

Field trials underway in Delta Farmers partner with researchers to determine most suitable crops BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

A Brunswick Point farm is the scene of a research project that has wheat, oats and barley from around the world being grown. The project, a joint initiative of the Delta Farmers’ Institute and the University of B.C.’s Land and Food Systems, has several acres of the Montgomery farm on River Road West growing 11 varieties of spring barley, two types of spring oats, 14 winter wheat and 12 spring wheat varieties from the UK, France, Ontario, Quebec, Prairies, Maritimes, Michigan, Indiana and the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon and Idaho) in sideby-side field trials. Cereal grains aren’t grown very much in Delta and the objective is to see which varieties are the most ideal to grow here. “We’re sourcing and trialing cereal grains looking for disease resistance and basically any variety that would work as a low input cereal grain that can be part of a rotation,” said DeLisa Lewis, a UBC PhD candidate taking part in the project.

“At one point in the history of the delta and the south coastal farming area, cereal grains were grown pretty seriously ... this project is looking to assist the local growers in finding the better disease resistant varieties that would work in rotation with their regular cropping strategy.” Lewis noted research by provincial agrologists already found cereal grains are a good way to use “banked up” nutrients in soil. “In Delta they grow lots of potatoes, turnips and other root crops, and processing crops like peas and beans are in the rotation. But we have both conventional growers and organic growers and the organic growers are getting quite a premium for their organically grown cereal grains. It’s part of what’s called the 100 Mile Diet.” Lewis said the goal is to get more grain varieties grown in Delta and get local growers talking amongst themselves about what’s working in their fields. “We’ve seen an increase in the last couple of years with the grains. I just did a survey checking out how

The project is an initiative of UBC and the Delta Farmers’ Institute. much barley was in the ground this year and it’s looking pretty good with the barley and some wheats as well, but it’s the barley that seems to be pretty interesting for the growers here.” She added the project will also help the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust find the most ideal winter wheat to use in the DFI winter cover crop program. Some varieties seem to be more attractive to the palates of wintering waterfowl than others, she said. Providing the Delta Optimist a tour of his test

field this week, farmer Ken Montgomery showed the various oats, winter and spring wheats and barley growing in test sections. Looking different in size and colour, the crops to be harvested next month for analysis come from such far away places and New Brunswick and the UK. Noting the dry, warm weather has helped the growing, Montgomery said what might grow well in the Prairies might not necessarily do well here. Some of the barleys that look promising include a Six Row from the

Prairies, a Baroness from Washington state and a Kawartha from Ontario, he said. A couple of UK varieties also look like they could grow well here, he said, pointing to a couple of other oat varieties that haven’t grown much and don’t look encouraging. “We won’t know how good they really are until we thrash them. We’ve seen some good disease resistance from some of them,” he said. Some of the cereal crops will that be harvested in the eco-friendly crop rota-

tion research will also be used as a good compost, he added. The UBC research team will hold a pair of open houses this weekend to give the public a chance to learn more about the project and cereal crops from around the world. The open houses will be held at the Montgomery farm, 3010 River Rd. West, this Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Calls looking for money came from fraudster, not police, department warns JESSICA KERR

Delta police are warning the public about a recent case of attempted telephone fraud.

On Monday, a Ladner resident received a call from a man who claimed he was collecting donations for the Delta police department. The caller asked for a

credit card number, however the resident refused to give out any information over the phone and called the department to report the incident. This was the second

call of this nature in the past two weeks, said Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Sharlene Brooks. She stressed that the police department does not, in any way, fundraise

or solicit funds from the public. “The Delta police remind the public not to provide personal information over the phone but if you choose to donate to a charity

organization utilize other means,” Brooks said. “In this case, the complainant did the right thing and did not provide information and alerted police to this suspicious call.”

City officials clearly not a fan of incineration option BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

It looks like it will be a tough sell for Metro Vancouver to convince the City of Vancouver to stop dumping garbage at the landfill at Burns Bog. The regional board gave preliminary approval several weeks ago to a draft of a solid waste plan, which has gone out for yet another round of public consultation. According to Mayor Lois Jackson, who chairs the Metro board, a major difficulty continues to come from Vancouver, which voted against the plan after trying to introduce some late amendments. At Delta council following the Metro board vote, Jackson said Vancouver wanted to narrow the scope of a new plan, including banning the use of wood waste in incinerators, which only slows the process of getting an updated plan approved.

Residents find ‘Serenity’ Wheelchair-accessible greenhouse opens at hospital

Residents of Delta Hospital’s Mountain View Manor celebrated the official opening of Serenity Garden last Wednesday. Many residents of the extended care unit have agricultural backgrounds and recreational time plays an important part of their daily lives. A great need was found for a wheelchair accessible greenhouse where all residents would

be able to participate. Residents will now be able to tend to a variety of plants, vegetables and herbs, which is both enjoyable and therapeutic. Mountain View Manor residents and staff were elated to unveil donor recognition signage in thanks to the community’s generous efforts in making the wheelchair accessible greenhouse a reality.

The $40,000 greenhouse was made possible by the fundraising efforts of the Delta Hospital Foundation and the Delta Hospital Auxiliary, with contributions of $17,600 from Trinjan and many volunteer hours from the Rotary clubs of Ladner and Tsawwassen. The long-awaited project included the revitalization of the south patio and surrounding garden area.

Ladner chef leads team to victory at nationals

Weeks of jangled nerves, sacrificed sleep and hours in the kitchen. It all paid off for Vancouver Community College’s junior chef team last month when it won the honour of representing Canada in the 2012 World Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany. Coached by Tobias MacDonald, a VCC instructor and head chef at Ladner’s La Belle Auberge, the group beat out teams from Nova Scotia, PEI and Quebec to win the competition to become Youth Team Canada at the Canadian Culinary Federation’s national convention in Windsor, Ont. “This is an incredible achievement for the entire culinary arts department at VCC, and is yet another testament of their passion, skill and talent,” says Jonathan Rouse, dean of VCC’s school of hospitality.

“I am so proud of our junior culinary team and know they will do extremely well representing Canada at the international level.” “It shows the caliber of students and instructors at this college,” MacDonald says, adding that leading chefs from around the city supported the team. “We’re so fortunate to have such a great food culture in Vancouver and VCC’s a big part of that, getting good people out into the industry.” Student team members were John Ho and Sophie Fenlon, supported by Kathy Chan and Daniel Davyduke. MacDonald, coaching for the first time, called the competition mentally exhausting to watch. “I was tired after it and they were the ones doing the work.” On the VCC menu was a first course of lobster meatball with seared salmon and

The main course was a rabbit saddle wrapped in bacon, with dessert of chocolate fondant bombe, mango jelly and pineapple tart with vanilla ice cream. $6,500 prize buys ceiling lift at Irene Thomas Hospice

The Delta Hospice Society is the recipient of the IODE’s (Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire) annual Mary Emerson Award of $6,500. The Tsawwassen chapter chose the society as its candidate for its funding efforts and made a presentation for the award at the IODE’s annual provincial meeting in Vernon earlier this year. Due to the Tsawwassen chapter’s initiative and the support of the IODE

Boundary Bay chapter they were successful in winning the coveted $6,500 award for the Delta Hospice Society to fund a ceiling lift in the Irene Thomas Hospice. Each of the 10 suites in the Irene Thomas Hospice has a ceiling lift, so the total cost for the equipment and installation is $65,000. “We are very grateful for the ladies of the IODE who recognized the importance of a ceiling lift and chose

Spending two days and 200 kilometres on a bicycle might seem like an incredible feat to some, but for the more than 400 cyclists and volunteers who turn out annually to support the B.C. Lung Association’s Bicycle Trek for Life & Breath, it is simply the best way to wrap up another great summer of cycling. That’s how Ladner’s Amanda Close looks at the annual event, which will see its 26th edition held Sept. 11 and 12. “I started off as a volunteer supporting my partner Scott as he rode and also to honour my father who passed away from complications due to lung disease,” said Close. “After two years of volunteering I decided I didn’t want Scott having all the fun, so we have made it a family weekend. We ride and our children volunteer and cheer us on.” A recreational ride designed for both casual and experienced cyclists, the Trek is the B.C. Lung Association’s cornerstone fundraising event. TFN plans add fuel to debate TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW Every time a major housing development is proposed, the debate invariably turns to a question of need. Is it growth just for the sake of growth or will it actually bring benefits to the community? The arguments are as predictable as they are heated. Advocates talk about absorbing our fair share for the region, about providing a larger population base to attract and support amenities, and about providing necessary housing choices. Opponents point to a loss of farmland, open space and quality of life. There’s no correct figure when it comes to the number of new housing units a community requires, but that hasn’t stopped people in these parts from arguing over it ad nauseam. Some point to Ron Toigo’s redevelopment of the Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club and say the almost 500 units to be constructed there provide sufficient growth for the foreseeable future. There’s no denying it will boost population, although it’s catering primarily to an upscale, empty nester crowd, so I’m not sure it, and it alone, will satisfy the full spectrum of future housing needs. The Century Group’s proposal for the Southlands certainly offers a broader selection, but at 1,900 units is seen as just too big by many Tsawwassenites. The already murky debate over how much development is enough is now clouded by what’s taking place on the Tsawwassen First Nation reserve. Given it’s just across Highway 17 from the rest of town, do you factor construction there into the mix? Some TFN members have hired Colliers International to seek out a developer to build in excess of 1,000 homes, which would be in addition to any housing planned by the band council, so it’s not a stretch to envision a Southlandssized development emerging on the reserve in the years to come. Will that be sufficient? Opponents will undoubtedly say so, and then some, maintaining that number of units will not only clog highways but also provide more than adequate housing selection. Development advocates will point to a 99-year lease, a more isolated location and an inability to vote in local elections as some of the reasons why reserve housing won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. As is the case with beauty, the correct answer ultimately lies in the eyes of the beholder, meaning pro and anti-development factions will continue to disagree over the necessary build-out to keep our community happy. What takes place on the Tsawwassen First Nation reserve will simply pour more fuel on that fire.

Direct democracy demanded when politcians don’t listen DAN SOUTHARD

COMMUNITY COMMENT The recent kerfuffle over the suggestion that Stanley Park be renamed “Xwayxway” was a fascinating reflection of the times. Toss an opportunity to pander to First Nations on the table and our elected officials will devour it like a bunch of competitive eaters on the fourth of July. Of course, the idea of renaming the park was also a way to pander to tourists. After watching the Olympic opening ceremonies a lot of people are coming here expecting to see an abundance of native culture. Hence the Klahowya Village featured in Stanley Park this summer. Although, I think the name “Xwayxway” would have actually confounded visitors. Imagine brochure-laden tourists trying to read “Xwayxway” to immigrant cab drivers.

The other big story this month was Bill Vander Zalm’s delivery of the anti-HST petitions to Elections BC. For me it was like a flashback to the ‘80s, and I half expected to see Frank Baker trumpeting in Vander Zalm’s triumphant arrival in Victoria. Locally, our news has been dominated by the Ipsos Reid survey regarding (in part) the Southlands. Curious how both the delivery of the anti-HST petitions and the release of the Ipsos Reid survey results caused the discussions to shift from the details of each issue to the subject of whether voters should be allowed to guide government legislation. Proponents of both the HST and the proposed (or yet to be proposed) Southlands development plan are both openly resorting to the curiously authoritarian argument that voters are too ignorant to be allowed to actively participate in our democracy more than once every three or four years. Heck, if we let the herd have a say “chaos” will soon ensue. Before long Lord of the Flies will leap from the allegorical to the literal, and voters will go mad with power. No chubby kid will be

spared. We’re also told that direct democracy would drive our province straight to financial ruin. We would end up like California, they claim, broke because the people get to vote on tax initiatives, and invariably always vote them down. Hmm, last time I checked, which was yesterday, California has the highest sales tax in the U.S. and the third highest income-tax rate. Maybe California’s financial problems have less to do with direct democracy and more to do with a truckload of other problems, like receiving very little in taxes from the 2.6 million illegal immigrants to whom they provide free access to their health care and education systems. In the end, it seems to me that people only begin to demand direct democracy when their elected officials have failed to demonstrate they are adequately attuned to the public’s wants and needs. Besides, most people who take the time to vote are pretty well informed, and it’s not like our elected officials are having nightly meetings with the burning bush. They’re just people like you and me — no wiser and no less prone to bad decisions.

July 14, 2010 The Delta Optimist A09 Letters to the Editor

Editor: Re: Governing by poll and survey would be a recipe for chaos, Community Comment, July 3 It is anarchy if the results of specific polls, surveys, referenda, etc. are to be treated by our elected representatives as background information at best and dismissed at worst, not the other way around. Let our councillors ignore the results of a very professionally constructed and well publicized Ipsos Reid survey on Tsawwassen’s planning future at their own peril, the Southlands issue in particular. Nothing can be more democratic than informing

the public of a choice it has, asking what its choice is, and then implementing that choice. Yet we keep hearing from those who do not accept the outcome in the case of the preservation of the Southlands that, somehow, we do not have all the facts. I would say that, by now, most Tsawwassen residents have more than sufficient knowledge of the facts to make an eminently informed decision. And if we don’t, then are the proponents and councillors hiding something from us? Another ploy is to point out the Century Group might sell the Southlands to a less caring developer if its plans are frustrated. This, of

course, is a low-level threat that we had better accept the current owner’s preferences or we might be in for worse to come. I like to think that developers, and indeed councillors, might come and go, but the will of the people doesn’t change. Let’s stop and think why we might fear the possibility of a more aggressive developer taking over the land. Wouldn’t council remind itself of our “no development” directive? Or if any new proposal were totally different, wouldn’t council resurvey the residents for its preferences — in a thorough and professional manner of course? Chris Stanton

with most of the folks in our town. Last Friday I dropped my wallet on the sidewalk in front of Beanies and a stranger picked it up. He checked to look for a name and noticed a sales slip for Sails and Rails hobby shop. He took the wallet and left it with the proprietor who phoned me.

There was and still is about $60 and a Visa card in the wallet. I don’t know his name but did meet him to thank him. A simple thank you seemed to satisfy him but it didn’t satisfy me so I want to make a public thank you to a stranger I will never forget. Ken Atkey

Hetherington gratefully accepted the cheque from Rotary president Rick Lewall and stated the funds will help him continue to volunteer in the community while achieving his academic goals. “It’s very exciting to be able to honour someone with the stature of Bill Kushnir with the presentation of this award,” said Lewall. Kushnir was a Rotary member, teacher and principal who gave countless hours to the community and will always be remembered for his strong commitment to the young people he taught and the sporting youth in his community. He also played professional football for the Calgary Stampeders and B.C. Lions. His love and support of sports in Delta was his passion and he was instrumental in starting baseball and football leagues in the community, coaching for many years.

Household purge stops short of getting rid of those old records LIVING MATTERS Some things are easier to part with than others. Ten-year-old bank statements? Wouldn’t miss them? Nine-year-old muumuus? Not a problem. Those plants that have made a home in the eaves? I’d happily bid them adieu. Then there’s the vinyl. The vinyl that puzzles the kids. “You know,” I say. “Vinyl as in LPs.” They have, of course, never heard of an LP either. Mention LP and they would not think of Pink Floyd or Billy Joel. Or Procol Harum. “Procul Harum?” they laugh. “What’s a Procol Harum?” Kids today. As it happens, the discussion has come up because my husband and I are facing a boomer moment. The boomer moment has arisen because we are trying to

A time when we were 21 and when we wore fab bell bottoms and hip granny dresses and when we liked to sit around in far-out darkened basements eating chips with dill pickle dip because that was the grooviest thing to do. “What?” asks a son. “You used the word ‘fab’? Like, what on earth does that mean?” “Be quiet,” I tell him. “We’re purging.” And so we were. Sort of. My goal was to get rid of, oh, 25,500 pieces of vinyl — give or take 12,000. The husband’s goal was the opposite: to hang on to music of The Doors and the Led Zeppelin and the Pink Floyd and the Steely Dan. “Steely Dan?” laugh the kids. “What’s a Steely Dan?” “Steely Dan,” responds the husband, “is nothing like a muumuu. Steely Dan was absolutely brilliant.”

purge. We have decided to toss the muumuus and the bank statements. But the 26,000 pieces of vinyl — give or take 12,000 — are another story. I want to trash them. My husband does not. “Oh,” says my husband quietly. “Remember this one?” He picks out Dark Side of the Moon from one of the 89 boxes that contain the 26,000 or so LPs and looks at it lovingly. “I could never part with this.” “You haven’t listened to it in 28 years,” I point out. “Besides, we no longer have a record player.” “What’s a record player?” ask the sons. “Be quiet,” I tell them. “We’re purging.” The mission, as I see it, is to adhere to that old tossing maxim: if you haven’t used something in more than a year, you should throw it out. But that’s tough when it comes to the vinyl. Some of the vinyl items — take anything by Creedance Clearwater Revival, say — conjure memories of another time.

Fondest memories of Empire Stadium prove to be a winner for Delta man Finally the parade ended and my dad, still in uniform, got me and we went to the game. Arriving at Empire Stadium the sounds, smells, and the entire goings-on put my head on a pivot, for I did not want to miss any of this first-time experience. We waited in line with our tickets and then waited in line at the concession stands. Now well prepared with hotdogs, Coke and peanuts, we walked through the small tunnel entrance and for the first time I could see Empire Stadium from the inside. lineups for both sides, the flip of the coin for the kickoff, the V.I.P. kickoff and then finally the kickoff and the game was on. My eyes never left the field. The action was a continuous assault upon both my vision and hearing. Hearing the pro-Edmonton, crowd gasp as the ball was thrown to a receiver and then a quiet hush as the ball fell through his fingertips. The grunts and the groans, the hits and the misses, the running, the catching, the kicking, the punting football now had me mesmerized. I loved everything about it. I wanted nothing to change. To me, football had to be played in this way in this stadium. Over the years there were many more times that I visited Empire Stadium. I watched the Lions roar; there were concerts, and track and field events. As a high school football player I played at Empire Stadium against the Notre Dame Jugglers in the 1969 Shrine Bowl. Unfortunately we lost. I believe that we were the last game on real grass at Empire Stadium. A few years later as a player for the Vancouver Meralomas, I returned to Empire Stadium to play in the Junior Big Four Football League. At that time the field was artificial turf and when you hit the ground it really hurt. It was quite something for me to play for the Vancouver Meralomas. For it was with the Meralomas that my Uncle Vic had played part of his football career. His picture still hangs on the clubhouse wall in the president’s room. Yes, Empire Stadium holds many memories for me. I was sad the day they tore it down. But now I rejoice at the realization that I will take my 22-year-old, son to a Lions game at Empire Stadium. It won’t be like 1960, it won’t be for the Grey Cup, but it will be the continuation of a tradition. My dad took me to my first game at Empire Stadium and even though I have taken my son to the dome, he has yet to experience Empire Stadium: the sounds, the smells, the whole experience of watching football outdoors in a grand old stadium. Life goes on and shall forever change, but sometimes I think they should just leave some things alone. Empire Stadium should remain and be used as a sports and entertainment complex at least until my son can take his son to Empire (Stadium) Field.

Claire Cameron (left) hits the finish line just ahead of Laura Brown and Jasmin Glaesser to capture Sunday’s Tour de Delta White Spot Road Race in Tsawwassen. The 29-year-old covered the 85-kilometre trek in two hours, 22 minutes and 27.8 seconds for her first ever victory in Delta.

Ladner rider shines on home course Claire Cameron pulls away in final metres to edge overall winner Laura Brown and capture Tour de Delta’s Road Race – and cycling – after hurting her knee nine years ago playing soccer and being told to rehab on a bike. “I used to train here,” she said. “I had to get off my bike to go up (the 56th Street hill) the very first time I ever rode.” On Sunday, she used that hill to break away with two laps left. Four other riders gave chase and reeled her, so Cameron, who is doing a bachelor of education at UBC, stuck close to the Total Restoration wheels. “I was third wheel going into the sprint and I was like just go, hit it hard and I got it,” said Cameron, who went to the 2004 Athens Paralympics as a pilot for a visually impaired Canadian rider and will attend a national track team training camp later this week. Brown will be there too, and she’ll have a handful of new Tour de Delta jerseys to choose from.

Brown’s second-place finish Sunday allowed her to secure the overall lead she took by winning the MK Delta Prologue on Friday night and kept with a secondplace finish in the Canadian Criterium Championship Saturday in Ladner. “It was a bit of a drag race,” Brown said of Sunday’s finish. “I did a lot of work to try to keep it away and Jasmine is a really good time trial rider so we were time trialing with a lap and a half to go. We tried to do a lead out here but Claire had a bit more in her legs for the sprint.” Brown, who has had success on the international track stage, also won the top young rider award, and Total Restorations took the team title. “I’m so stoked,” said Brown, a Calgary native who lives in Vancouver now. “Individual GC, team GC, young rider, some stage wins – we almost won every-

Kirchmann, who turned 20 less than two weeks ago, also won the under-23 Canadian Road Race title in late June in Edmonton. But that doesn’t come with a jersey. This race did, meaning she will wear a Maple Leaf as part of a special Trek Red Truck jersey at criteriums for the next year. “It means so much to be wearing the Canadian flag,” Kirchman said. “You are representing your country and people know where you are from and that you’ve won a big race so it’s definitely exciting and it feels great.”

Claire Cameron provided some hometown flavour on the podium for the 10th edition of the Tour de Delta. The Ladner raised member of the Mighty Riders jumped past Total Restoration teammates Laura Brown and Jasmin Glaesser with 200 meters left down the final straightaway to win Sunday’s White Spot Road Race in Tsawwassen. With her parents and sister cheering loudly, she finished the 85-kilometre event in two hours, 22 minutes and 27.8 seconds. “I know this course and I really like this course,” said an excited Cameron, who grew up working as a lifeguard at the Winskill Aquatic Centre, located just steps from the finish line. “My parents are here, my sister is here. They barely ever come to watch me and so just the atmosphere and I know the course.” Cameron, 29, got to know the course

Bell captured the road race in convincing fashion, finishing five seconds ahead of the chase. Bell was part of an early 10-man breakaway, then rode away from them with four 8kilometer laps left, building a 90-second gap with two laps to go before holding off a talented peleton in hot pursuit coming into the final corner. “I’ve never been able to win this road race from a bunch sprint so you’ve got to try another way,” said Bell, who did win the Tour de Delta overall title in 2007 and 2008.

Svein Tuft expected David Veilleux to try and make a break for it. He just didn’t expect the powerful young Canadian to do it so soon. Veilleux, a 22-year-old from Quebec, broke away from Tuft with one lap left and stayed out in front right to the finish line to win the Canadian Criterium Championship at the 10th annual Tour de Delta on Saturday night. Tuft, a Langley native who rides for GarminTransitions Pro Tour team in Europe, and Veilleux broke away with 22 laps left around the 900-meter course through the streets of Ladner. They stayed close, with Tuft winning a $2,400 crowd prime with eight laps left, but Veilleux made his move at the finish line as the bell lap sounded and stayed away. “I knew if I went earlier Svein was way too strong and he would catch me easily,” said Veilleux who rides for the American-based Kelly Benefits Pro Cycling team. “I was afraid he would just attack me, so with one lap left I thought I would just take a chance and try to stay out there.” Veilleux followed up the victory by winning a bunch

ADESA RICHMOND

The heavyweights of the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League now await the high flying Delta Islanders. Fresh off a two-game sweep of the Burnaby Lakers and riding a franchise best seven-game winning streak, the Islanders will face the New West Salmonbellies or Coquitlam Adanacs in the league’s semifinals starting this weekend. Their final four opponent could have been determined as soon as last night if the Nanaimo Timbermen completed a first round upset of the third place Victoria Shamrocks. Regardless of what happens, Delta is going to up against one of the top teams in the nation. The regular season champion Adanacs dropped just one of 21 games, while their probable opponent — New West — was no slouch either with a 16-3-2 record. The Islanders were winless against both teams this season and have just one win to show for two years worth of league games. However, this is a different Delta team that has been revitalized by some late season trades that has established a “win now” mode. The playoff series win over the Lakers was the first in club history and now the Islanders will look to continue their roll in uncharted waters. “We have to be disciplined which means staying out of the penalty box and (staying within our system),” said general manager and head coach Greg Rennie. “If we can do

that then we have a very good shot.” Rennie is anticipating a best-of-five series with the Salmonbellies which would mean a berth into the Minto Cup would also very likely be on the line. The Adanacs are already in as hosts of the national championships and would be overwhelming favourites to beat Nanaimo. He was so confident his team would take care of the Lakers that some key players, such as Ryan Keith, Sean O’Neil and Matt Messenger, were scratched from the lineup to ensure everyone would see the floor before the playing time shrinks considerably for the next round. The move almost backfired for game two as Delta needed a huge performance from goaltender Zack Boychuck in a 9-7 victory on Sunday night. The 21-year-old St. Catherines native, who was acquired from Nanaimo, stopped 49 shots, including 17 in the final period. The Islanders had opened the series with an 18-6 win one night earlier in Ladner. “We came out flat and they played like a team with their backs against the wall,” said Rennie. “They came at us hard and we needed a big game from Zach. He showed why I think he is the best goalie in the league.” Logan Schuss led the way in game two with five points, including a hat trick. Michael Berekoff scored twice, with singles going to Mike Mallory, Cody Craven, Matt Laustrup and Scott Jones. Ryan Keith, Steve Higgs and Schuss each had hat tricks in game one.
