Cyclists chasing national title 10th edition of the Tour de Delta will be highlighted by crowning of Canadian champion in Saturday’s criterium A Canadian title will be on the line for the first time as top cyclists roll into town for this weekend’s Tour de Delta. The 10th edition of the annual cycling showcase will see Saturday evening’s Brenco Criterium in Ladner Village double as the Canadian championship for both men and women.

Special Section Pages B1 - B20 “We look for strong events and a strong organization where there’s going to be a good field represented,” Canadian Cycling Association president John Tolkamp said of the decision to award the national title in the Delta race. Will Routley, who captured the Canadian road race crown last month in Edmonton, expects the competition to be tough. “There’s going to be a good field here now that the criterium

Swimmer endures cold and wind to conquer strait JESSICA KERR

Tsawwassen’s James Monk successfully swam across the Strait of Georgia Saturday. Monk, who was swimming with North Vancouver’s Rod Craig as he trains to attempt to swim across the English Channel, made the 30-kilometre swim in nine hours and 35 minutes. When the pair set out from Mission Point in Sechelt early Saturday morning, the conditions were not ideal.

“It was really bumpy and really windy,” Monk said, adding that boats in the area were heading for shelter. The swimmers, accompanied by a support team in a boat, were not deterred and soldiered on. They were rewarded later with calmer waters and sunshine. “After maybe 12 to 15 kilometres it really started to calm down,” Monk said. The task, however, was still a challenge. The water was cold and the swimmers could not stop for more

than 20 or 30 seconds at a time for food and water. Any longer, Monk said, and the cold would set in and the risk of hypothermia increased.

As time wore on, pain and fatigue set in. “I was going through a lot of physical pain,” Monk said. They pushed through the pain

and cold, motivated by the thought of reaching the beach on the other side. “I’ve never been so happy to see sand in all my life,” Monk said on the moment he set foot on solid ground at Piper Beach in Nanaimo, nine-and-a-half hours after diving in. “After my swim, I couldn’t walk, my muscles had completely given up and I was shaking violently because of the cold.” On Monday, Monk said he was “still pretty tired” but feeling better as his body recovered with lots

of sleep. “I just slept and slept and slept.” Craig is planning on attempting to swim across the English Channel later this month. The distance is about the same as the route he and Monk swam on the weekend. Monk said he will continue to swim with Craig as he finishes training, however, he added he isn’t sure he will make his own attempt. “I don’t know if I want to put myself through that again.”

Harbour could be so much more Municipal committee looking at ways beyond just seasonal events to revitalize the Ladner waterfront BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Ladner Harbour could become a major draw compared to what it is today. That’s what Coun. Heather King had to say about the many ideas contemplated by the Downtown Ladner Waterfront Redevelopment Advisory Committee, which has been looking at how to revitalize the area. In an interview shortly before the committee’s recent report to council, King, vice-chair of the committee, said they’re entering the next phase of planning. “Phase one was essentially looking at what do we have, what do we need to do and is that vision attainable. Once we finished that we will refine urban design options and we develop the implementation strategies in phase two,” she said. A consultant will be needed to see if the ideas are economically feasible, said King. The committee has been exploring various issues, including parking and increasing density and building heights to encourage redevelopment. Some of the ideas for changing the look of the area included floating walkways and walkways perpendicular to the dike leading to “porches” on the waterside of buildings. It’s certainly not the first time there’s been talk of

Ladner’s Chisholm Street could use a facelift, particularly if the goal is to attract people to the waterfront. revitalizing Ladner’s waterfront. In 1980, for example, a study by a team of 25 UBC architecture students came up with a series of recommendations for a plan that would capture the essence of Ladner as a fishing and farming community and build around that theme. Professor Raymond Burton addressed the Ladner Business Association on the recommendations, saying the area has “unique environmental qualities” like fish-

ing, farming and retailing opportunities that “could attract people from all over the Greater Vancouver area.” Fast-forward three decades, and while there’s been much talk of revitalization, there’s been little follow-through. However, King said this time around the ideas won’t “collect dust on a shelf.” Change will be more of a certainty with incentives for property owners and a timeline for implementation. “That’s one of the

criticisms, that when we’ve gone to the people of Ladner that have lived here for many years they had a healthy dose of skepticism that this is going to come to fruition. I think that’s changing now that they’re seeing concrete implementation steps,” said King. She said Delta has already done a tremendous job cleaning up the harbour. Two years ago, Delta used $2 million it received in amenity money from Port Metro Vancouver to acquire the Seven Seas property on

Chisholm Street, located next to the Brackman-Ker building, also owned by the municipality. As far as the two key Delta-owned buildings, because extensive and costly renovations would be involved, the committee looked at several options, especially for the Brackman-Ker building. Staff told the committee there’s been significant deterioration of that building, but there are still some structural elements “that have stood the test of time.”

Two men are facing charges after an incident at a Ladner hotel over the weekend. A/Sgt. Paul Eisenzimmer said the police got a call just after 10 a.m. Saturday from a woman who said two men had held her down, threatened her and refused to let her leave the room at a motel in the 6000-block of Highway 17. The two men, who are New Westminster and Richmond residents, were arrested and are facing charges of assault and forcible confinement. They were scheduled to appear in court Monday. The victim is also a New Westminster resident. Eisenzimmer said she was held in the room against her will for about 20 minutes. He also said all three involved in the altercation are known to each other.

The options discussed include the possibility of a partnership arrangement with a developer. Some of the ideas for the buildings include arts and cultural uses as well as a public market. At a recent committee meeting, one member commented there was no sense of waterfront along the existing streetscape, suggesting a “view corridor” be created by retaining the Brackmen-Ker’s façade as an “open shell” for public use. As far as other ideas, King said the heritage of the area could be highlighted with well-placed artifacts at the buildings and along a boardwalk. At Spot on the Water Park on Chisholm Street, meanwhile, there’s an opportunity to set up a dock for tourists coming in by boat, she said. King agrees better signage could direct motorists to visit the harbour, creating a tremendous tourist hub, but there needs to be more than the seasonal events, such as the Ladner Village Market, for them to visit. “I think that’s definitely why we need to also look at do we need to increase density? Because putting in these great artisan coffee shops, etc., is wonderful, but you really need to have the residential base to support and sustain it. But we want to make sure any increase in density is supported and done very gradually.”

One of the dumpster fires in Ladner spread to an adjacent building on Haviland Street.

Delta’s fire and police departments are investigating three arsons in Ladner yesterday. Between 1:30 a.m. and 1:40 a.m., firefighters responded to three dumpster fires. The first was in the 4800-block of Central Avenue, which caused $2,000 damage to the dumpster. The second fire was in the 4800-block of Haviland Street, the blaze spreading from a dumpster to the nearby building and causing $10,000 in damage. The third fire was in a dumpster behind a restaurant in the 5100-block of Ladner Trunk Road. That fire also caused $2,000 damage to the dumpster.

Developers contend Delta abdicating responsibility Not dealing with applications leaving owners in limbo BY

tions,” states the letter signed by UDI executive director Maureen Enser. “Delta’s resolution abdicates this responsibility, which is one of the core roles of local government, leaving property owners with nowhere else to turn.”

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

An organization representing professionals involved in land development is crying foul over a recent Delta council decision. Back in April, civic politicians sent the Century Group plan for the Southlands and another development proposal back to the applicants and refunded any fees. The reason? The land in both cases is within Metro Vancouver’s Green Zone and the regional district is in the process of updating its Livable Region Plan. In the same motion, council also directed the planning department not to accept any new applications that would require Metro Vancouver approval. “We thought it’s best to just close our doors to anything within the Green Zone until Metro Vancouver has finalized this,” CAO George Harvie said at the time. The Urban Development Institute Pacific Region, which represents companies and individuals involved in all facets of land development, recently sent a letter to mayor and council voicing concerns about the decision. “... under the Local Government Act, municipalities are given the responsibility for considering development applica-

“It sets a bad precedent for planning in Delta and the region, and undermines the regulatory process, which is vital for investment and economic development and society’s interests generally.”

Maureen Enser

In the letter, Enser goes on to argue the municipality has violated a statute of the act that states local government must consider every application. The UDI is also concerned the resolution will leave property owners in limbo indefinitely. The institute has asked Delta to reconsider the motion. “It sets a bad precedent for planning in Delta and the region, and undermines the regulatory process, which is vital for investment and economic development and society’s inter-

ests generally.” At the meeting in April, Harvie said it appears a new regional plan likely wouldn’t come into effect until 2011. “Things can change what Metro Vancouver finally and ultimately decides, but having these applications sitting there builds up expectations from the community that we are actually working on these and this is something we can’t do,” Harvie told council at the April 12 meeting. At the time of the decision, Century Group president Sean Hodgins told the Optimist he was disappointed the application was sent back but added that it wasn’t a major setback since the municipality hadn’t been dealing with it anyway. Municipal staff reported to council last month about the concerns in UDI’s letter. The report, signed by Tom Leathem, Delta’s director of community planning and development, states: “While staff agree that it is one of council’s responsibilities to consider development applications, staff disagree that returning the applications is an abdication of council’s responsibility or a violation of any statute.” Enser said the institute believes the concerns still stand. She said this week the UDI has brought it to the attention of the Office of the Inspector of Municipalities.

Cancer survivor hitting HARRIS NURSERY pavement next month & FLORIST Beth Heras in Weekend to End Women’s Cancers DAVE WILLIS

CUSTOMER APPRECIATION DAY

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Ladner’s Beth Heras, 32, knows how scary cancer can be. She was eight weeks pregnant when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. “Even before we got the [biopsy] results back we pretty much knew it was breast cancer. We had almost a week of just waiting to find out and that was horrible. The waiting is the worst part,” Heras remembers. After initial worries, doctors said she could keep the pregnancy and treat the cancer at the same time. Today Heras’s cancer is in remission and her daughter Emma is doing “great.” “She’s perfect. She was born healthy, fine. We expected something but nothing. She had more hair than I did when she was born,” said Heras, who went through six rounds of chemotherapy and 28 radiation treatments.

Beth Heras is taking part in the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers in August. Now Heras is aiming to raise awareness for the disease and money for the BC Cancer Foundation by taking part in the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers next month in Vancouver. The event consists of a two-day, 60-kilometre walk. “My husband did it really well last year so he made it almost look too easy. I’ve got to make sure I don’t get too relaxed about it.”

Heras, a stay at home mom with three kids, has set a $5,000 fundraising goal for herself. So far she’s at $1,500. Donations can be made at www.endcancer.ca. Breast cancer continues to be the most frequently diagnosed cancer among Canadian women and is the second leading cause of cancer mortality among women.

Sure to see cycling’s next star TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW I was painting the family room Sunday morning so I couldn’t see the screen and was only half listening, but when I heard the commentators mention Tyler Farrar, the TV immediately got my full attention. “Did they just say Tyler Farrar?” I asked my 12-year-old, who was lounging on the couch watching coverage of the Tour de France. Before he could answer, a graphic appeared on the screen profiling two riders the experts were keeping an eye on during the first full day of the world’s most famous cycling race. Wanting to hear what they had to say about Farrar, I ignored my son’s query as to why I was so interested and listened to members of the panel gush about the 26-year-old American from the powerful GarminTransitions team, including analysis of his seventh place finish in the opening day’s prologue. When they moved on to other things, I relented and answered my son’s question, albeit with a question of my own. “Don’t you remember Tyler Farrar? You should, you saw him win the Tour de Delta road race.” To be fair, that was six years ago and my son was just six at the time, but I clearly remember the then 20-year-old from Wenatchee, Washington, nipping hometown hero Cam Evans as they sprinted along 56th Street to the Winskill Park finish line of the Tour de Delta’s marathon conclusion. Farrar returned the following year to win the hill climb, but fell just short of defending his road race title. I had the same aha moment a couple of years back when I saw footage of Will Frischkorn driving to the finish in a furious three-way battle for a stage win in the Tour de France. Frischkorn also won the Tour de Delta’s White Spot Road Race, his victory coming in 2003. I mention these Tour de Delta alumni because the 10th edition of the summer tradition goes this weekend. Although cyclists enjoy about as much public profile as water polo players, it’s become clear over the first nine runnings the local race has not only attracted the sport’s elite, but has also become a springboard. Tour de Delta stalwarts Svein Tuft and Christian Meier are two others that now race in the big leagues of Europe, although both will return to chase a Canadian title this weekend. There will be races in all three communities, including the Brenco Criterium in Ladner Village Saturday evening and the White Spot Road Race in Tsawwassen Sunday morning. It’s a good bet cycling’s next star will be among the competitors.

Council’s agenda differs from the residents of Tsawwassen STEVE GRAHAM

COMMUNITY COMMENT The Ipsos Reid poll regarding the Tsawwassen Area Plan revision received 5,778 returns on mail-outs and handouts to 8,730 homes and businesses. This high response ratio likely reflects residents’ frustration with the area plan process, orchestrated by Coun. Bruce McDonald, to date. This process has been widely perceived as biased. Valid surveys were returned from 3,337 of the 8,000 residential addresses to which surveys were mailed, or 42 per cent. This was 1.45 times greater than the business response ratio of 29 per cent (106 valid responses to the 360 survey forms mailed). The CAO’s report to Delta council on the survey compares the residential and business response ratios, then switches to report relative support for the several questions asked in terms of the ratios to total valid surveys received.

This has caused some confusion in the community in interpreting the results. Notwithstanding this switch in interpreting the survey data, the results clearly showed the residents of Tsawwassen do not want much change in the area plan. I was appalled at the response of councillors to the receipt of the survey results at their June 28 meeting. CAO George Harvie, on behalf of staff, proposed a motion that council adopt the results of the survey as planning policy, but council decided not accept this recommendation from its staff. McDonald asked Ipsos Reid to go over the data again to see if there were any neighbourhoods in Tsawwassen that voted anomalously and thus might favour his undisclosed development agenda. Coun. Scott Hamilton indicated he did not want to lose the option of subdividing lots in Tsawwassen by spot zoning. Now, what motive would a North Delta councillor have for wanting to retain the option to spot zone in Tsawwassen? Mayor Lois Jackson commented that spot zoning applications are always welcome irrespective of the area plan. Coun. Robert Campbell suggested the staff motion not be adopted,

but rather the public survey results be referred to the Tsawwassen Area Plan Committee for its consideration. McDonald jumped on this suggestion by proposing the committee consider incorporating the public survey results in its report. This motion was unanimously passed. The decision not to adopt the conclusive survey results as policy will place council and staff in a difficult strategic position if the area plan committee should recommend policies that differ in any way with the survey results. The unanimous decision by the mayor and members of this council (except Coun. Heather King, who was absent) not to support the staff motion to adopt policies corresponding to the preferences by the majority of the residential survey respondents in Tsawwassen indicates this council’s agenda for Tsawwassen differs substantially from the expressed will of the people. On this basis, I conclude it would be in the best interests of the majority of Tsawwassen residents if councilors McDonald, Hamilton, Campbell and Anne Peterson were not re-elected next November. Better to have a council that works for us rather than against us.

Land swap could be solution an increase in dwelling units from 34,300 (2006) to 48,000 (2041). Our planners are trying to do this with infill — more units on existing lots — but Ipsos Reid also says we reject that, at least in Tsawwassen. Is the solution a land swap? Governments covet ownership of the Southlands. Could they get it in return for land on which Century Group could build homes for future residents? It cries out for serious consideration. What land does Delta own that is or could be zoned residential and swapped for the Southlands? Is there an exchange with the school district that could achieve the same goal? Kwantlen plans a program combining farmer training with community

Public has right to voice opinion Editor: Re: Governing by poll and survey would be a recipe for chaos, Community Comment, July 3 In his most recent diatribe against local citizens in regards to the Southlands development saga, Mike Schneider postulates that “the majority of the public does not have all of the information at its disposal to make informed deci-

sions.” Maybe not, but we do know and understand one thing: Our right to voice our opinion, whether in a survey, plebiscite or referendum, is an appropriate and just response to the backroom influence-peddling and cronyism that permeates the current Delta council and its pro-development media acolytes. farming. Would it swap its land at Ladner Trunk Road and Highway 17, or other developable land, for the Southlands? Metro Vancouver could have a Forest Nature Park and, perhaps with the help of Wendy Holm or Kwantlen, a demonstration farm for public visits. What land does it own in the Lower Mainland that could be developed? We need a final solution for our Southlands problem, one that benefits everyone, not just one that frustrates the owner. Ed Ries

Editor: It’s too soon to dance in the streets! Ipsos Reid did not solve the Southlands problem. They only rejected a solution. Left in the wreckage is an owner with a problem. How would you like to pay residential rate property tax on 500-plus undeveloped acres, including a forest? There will be change. The only question is will it benefit Delta? Obvious outcomes are intensive agriculture next to our homes or sale to a speculator who will once again seek development. If we were to re-focus our efforts on finding a final solution, there might be one. Delta and other Lower Mainland communities need more homes for an ever-expanding population. Delta must plan for

Battling cats by the book LIVING MATTERS The husband, let’s just say, is not a fan of the cats. The cats, let’s just say, are not fans of the husband. He doesn’t feed them. He doesn’t clean their litter trays. He doesn’t tell them they’re the most precious, cuddly, gorgeous creatures on the planet. Like I do. He says other things. “For crying out loud!” he’ll say — or something even worse. “Those stupid cats have been scratching the furniture again.” The cats may occasionally pee in — let’s just say — inappropriate places. That gets to the husband. But the thing that really gets to the husband is the scratching. The scratching on the corners of the sofa. The husband, let’s just say, has tried to remedy the issue. The husband has done his online research. He has sprayed a mixture of vinegar and water on the

“It’s for the cats,” I said. “The cats like to read?” she asked. “No,” I told her. “They like to scratch.” The husband took to staying up at night, sometimes for hours at a time, to ponder what to do. He proposed putting the cats down. I rejected the idea. He proposed going to a crafts store and buying sheets of brown bristol board. We could cut them in strips and attach them to the sofa corners with Velcro, he explained. We went to crafts store and bought the supplies. The husband spent a good two hours fashioning the anti-scratching posts. He looked positively thrilled, in spite of the bags under his eyes. He tried to attach the Velcro. But the Velcro wouldn’t stick. “For crying out loud!” he screamed — or something even worse. So these days, the books are back — for the moment, at least. The husband’s back to pondering — when he’s not cursing the cats.

corners of the sofa: 25 per cent the former, 75 per cent the rest. It didn’t work. The husband turned to tin foil — again, on account of the Internet. “This is supposed to deter them,” he informed me. This, after he’d been up since 4 a.m. researching the cat-scratching issue. He attached sheets of tin foil to the corners of the sofa with straight pins. The tin foil crumpled. And collapsed. “Books,” the husband informed me. This, after he’d been up to 3 a.m. pondering the cat-scratching issue. I came downstairs and saw that he’d leaned books — The Great Gatsby, Great Expectations, Alice in Wonderland — on the corners of the sofa. “Great Expectations?” I asked. “It might work,” the husband said. It did. Problem is, the books looked, well, a little misplaced. “Why is The Great Gatsby leaning on your chesterfield?” asked a girlfriend who happened by.

A14 The Delta Optimist July 7, 2010 Feedback

Delta council approved establishing 13 off-leash areas throughout the municipality, including four in Ladner and four in Tsawwassen. It’s the latest attempt by municipal hall to deal with the ongoing dog issue.

Some areas will be fenced while others will be marked with signs. They should be up and running by September. The Optimist asked:

Do you think this off-leash plan will work?

Christian Jolley I think that’d probably be a great idea for the dogs to let them off-leash a little bit, as long as they’re in a nice, civilized area.

Dieter Stolle Absolutely. I have a dog and the only thing I find annoying is people don’t pick up after their dogs. Maybe in an enclosed area they might just do it because they don’t want to step in it after a while.

You can have your say on this issue by taking part in our web poll at www. delta-optimist.com

Sandy Sherman I hope so, because I have two dogs.

Carol Sauer Yes. We don’t have any problems with dogs around us. Everybody’s got their dogs on leash.

Bill Kerr It doesn’t hurt to try something and if it doesn’t work, to try something else. They can always change it.

Last week we asked you:

What should be done with the rabbits? • 43.90 per cent said leave them alone. • 9.76 per cent said round them up and put them in an animal

shelter. • 46.34 per cent said it’s unfortunate, but a cull might be in order.

Islanders enter playoffs on roll Junior lacrosse team has won five straight, including 15-3 drubbing of first round opponent Burnaby BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

The Delta Islanders locked up fourth place with a pair of victories last weekend and are riding a five-game winning streak heading into the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League playoffs. They will face the Burnaby Lakers, a team the Islanders beat 15-3 in their regular season finale on Sunday, in the first round this weekend. “I think we match up really strong against them. I think we made a statement last night,” Islanders head coach and general manager Greg Rennie said Monday. “All things going well, if the kids play a full 60 minutes we should be able to keep going.” Delta has erupted for 51 goals in the last three games and new acquisitions Trevor Evans, Darcy Cummings and Scott Jones haven’t wasted any time helping the Islanders offensively. The trio registered 24 points in Delta’s win over Langley last Wednesday and regularly hit the scoresheet in Delta’s two wins last

weekend. “They’re 21-year-olds with hunger. They want to push and go as far as they can in the playoffs,” said Rennie, who was busy before the league’s trading deadline on July 1.

“I think we match up really strong against them. I think we made a statement last night.”

Greg Rennie

• Delta sent its 2011 first round pick, Josh Fiorovento, Chase Kelliher, Jimmy Lattin, Rob Peterson and Jamie Takiya to Port Coquitlam for Evans, Cummings, Jones and Matt Laustrup. • Delta picked up Steve Higgs and goaltender Zack Boychuck from Nanaimo for draft picks. • Delta acquired Kevin Chelczynski from Coquitlam for a draft pick. “Guys on our team have welcomed them with open arms. [They’re] excited about bringing guys in and making a push instead of

folding our tent and selling guys off like some teams are,” said Rennie. Rennie said Boychuck has been very solid in net, seeing about 70 minutes of action in two games with Delta so far. The Islanders plan to rotate their goalies in the playoffs, with netminder Blake Duncan getting the start to open the series against Burnaby. “Blake’s done very well for us all year and we’re not going to throw him under the bus,” said Rennie. Delta had a 2-1 record in its three regular season meetings with the Lakers. In Sunday’s blowout win, Delta led 7-0 after the first period and 13-1 after the second. Logan Schuss had a big game with three goals and four assists, Jones had a goal and five assists while Cummings scored a hat trick to go along with two helpers. Mike Mallory, Ryan Keith and Nathan Clare each scored twice for Delta. The best-of-three series with Burnaby gets going Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Ladner Leisure Centre.

Tyler Gohringer and the rest of the Delta Islanders handed Langley a 21-8 setback last week at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

Delta Ice Hawks name Darryl Erickson as new head coach a female junior team. “You’re dealing with a lot of young kids so development is still a very important part of the coach’s role. We felt that among the candidates we had, he was the best one to be able to carry on with what we’ve been putting together with our team,” said Ice

Hawks owner George Georgeopoulos. He noted Erickson was an assistant coach with the Pacific International Junior Hockey League’s North Delta Flyers in 2002/03. Georgeopoulos said last year’s Ice Hawks coach, Jimmy Camazzola, couldn’t commit to another full sea-

son with team. He said Camazzola, a former NHL draft pick and Italian pro league coach, would likely end up in the BCHL or Western Hockey League is some capacity or either coach his son, who’s heading into his last year of midget hockey. • The Ice Hawks continue

Name: Cheryl Age: 49 Occupation: Commission Clerk at the Corporation of Delta What is the activity? Volunteering at Tour de Delta, I do whatever they need me to do and I always have fun. I have done registration, timing, hosted VIPs, and anything else that was needed. Where and when does this happen? July 9, 10 & 11: Friday for the Prologue in North Delta, Saturday for the Criterium in Ladner & Sunday for the Road Race that happens all over Delta and ends in Tsawwassen. When did you get involved in the Tour de Delta? 7 years ago. Why did you get involved? My family billeted a rider the first time I volunteered and we attended the races to watch her that year. It was a great experience and I’ve volunteered for the Tour de Delta ever since. What do you like best about the Tour de Delta? There is lots of action; we can cheer on top riders from all over North America as well as local cyclists. It has the biggest purse in Canada and attracts riders who may compete in the 2012 Olympics in England. How does it benefit your life? Volunteering is my ‘payback’ to this awesome community; Delta is a great place to live. What other things you do to keep active? I walk, ride my bike and do Cycle Fit classes at the Ladner Leisure Centre and I get out and am active with my family too. How can you become a volunteer for Delta Parks, Recreation & Culture? Call or email Delta’s Volunteer Coordinator at 604.946.3288 or volunteers@corp.delta.bc.ca. If you want to see the Tour de Delta, go to www.tourdedelta.com for times and locations. If you will arrive by your car, plan ahead for where you will park as the race requires road closures for the safety of spectators and riders; the on-line road maps for each race show the closures. If you do not have access to the internet, call 604.952.3176 with questions about times and places and 604.946.3260 about traffic disruptions. For families who like to cycle, there is a community ride on Saturday, the 10th. It starts at 9am at three locations: Boundary Bay Regional Park, Holly Park and the Boundary Bay Dyke (72nd Street) and ends with a pancake breakfast at Holly Elementary School at 10am. For more information about how to be active in Delta, call Parks, Recreation & Culture at 604.946.3300 or go to www.corp.delta.bc.ca

were the team’s top two players throughout the season. Senior Brenden Tanaka saved his best for last with an outstanding post-season, highlighted by a 14th place finish at the provincials in a 114-player field. Coached by Neil Jensen, the Devils roster also included seniors Connor Sim, Richard Hudie, Taylor Finn, Calum Huntington and Josh Lymburner. The junior team, coached by Randy Tanaka, also enjoyed plenty of success, including a second place finish in league play. The team included Joshua Alalouf, Dallas Dien, Jake Holliday, Justin Kaleal, Ben

Lawson, Brock Lawson, Donny Mackintosh, Kyle Mclennan, Troy Stecher, Stuart Thornley and Louie Wong. None of the success for both teams would of happened without the great support, in tee times and lessons, from the Beach Grove Golf Club. Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club head professional Murray Poje provided free lessons and advice to both teams. After a few years of being absent from the provincials, Jensen feels that with a strong program and excellent support from the community, the foundation is in place for more success.

Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words I literally grew up with the CFL. My father Nick was a longtime member of the Montreal Alouettes back in the ’70s and early ’80s and my godfather is former Lions head coach and defensive coordinator Dave Ritchie. I grew up in Burlington, Ont. and attended McMaster University, which is located in nearby Hamilton. One of my biggest thrills was being drafted by the Lions in 2008. I never imagined my career taking off the way it has since then. I enjoy the challenge of playing special teams and I believe that as much as it is talked about, that part of Canadian football is under-rated. You can have a game-changing play each time the ball is kicked and I take pride in that fact. One of the benefits of playing football on the West Coast is being able to make my home here year round. This past year was especially memorable with Olympics festivities going on literally right outside my apartment. I also had the time of my life participating in our club’s community programs. If I had to choose one in particular, I would say Lions in the House is my favourite program to take part in each winter. My parents divorced when I was younger and I believe the experiences I had during those impressionable years have played a big role in the person I am today. I try to have the kids I talk to understand the importance of making positive life choices at a young age because it can have a significant impact on their path to adulthood.

Obituaries

HENDRICKSON, Pamela Margaret January 6, 1943 – July 3, 2010

With great sadness and sorrow, we share the passing of our loving wife and mother Pamela M. Hendrickson (nee Hanson) on the morning of July 3, 2010. Pam fought a courageous and stoic fight against cancer and lives on within us, free from pain and suffering, embraced and cherished with our love. A passionate traveller, gardener and lover of the natural world, Pam embraced life with confidence and enthusiasm. She loved her family immensely and took special pride in her wonderful and supportive friends. Pam was an endless source of encouragement and compassion, never shying away from a challenge or difficult situation. Pam was born on January 6, 1943 in New Bradwell, England, daughter of Walter and Phyllis Hanson and was raised in Derbyshire. She moved to Calgary, Canada in January of 1971 where she met her husband Grant in 1973. They were married in Pam’s hometown of Barton-under-Needwood, England on April 6, 1974. In 1978 their son Oliver was born and in 1982 the family moved to Tsawwassen, British Columbia. She lived for long walks on the beach with her dogs, a good fire during a cold winter’s night and sharing life’s special moments with her family and friends over a glass of wine. She had a passion for shopping and greatly loved and enjoyed the special times she had with her loving daughter-in-law Carla. Pam is survived by her loving and devoted family; husband Grant, son Oliver, daughter-in-law Carla and her sisters and their families; Pat and Paul Locke, Sue and John Sutton. Pam fought the good fight and died peacefully and with dignity. Pam will forever be in our hearts. A service will be held at the Parish of All Saints in Ladner, British Columbia on July 9, 2010 at 1:00pm. For their attentive care, treatment and compassion for Pam, the family asks that donations be made in lieu of flowers either to the Delta Hospital Foundation, the Delta Hospice Society, or the Leukemia/Bone Marrow Transplant Program of B.C. at Vancouver General Hospital for Multiple Myeloma research, treatment and care.
