Judge Peder Gulbransen dismissed the application of the defense to have several pieces of evidence against Carol Berner excluded.

Gulbransen ruled in Surrey Provincial Court Monday that Berner was not unlawfully detained and that Delta police Const. Sarah Swallow had reasonable suspicion to demand a breath sample at the scene of the crash.

Berner is on trial charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving caus-

ing bodily harm.

On May 17, 2008, four-yearold Alexa Middelaer and her aunt Daphne Johanson were feeding horses near the road on 64th Street in East Ladner when a car

his client’s rights were violated.

The judge dismissed those claims.

Alexa’s parents, Laurel and Michael Middelaer, were pleased with the judge’s decision.

“It was really great to hear the Page 4 judge rule and actually say that she was not detained,” Laurel Middelaer said outside court Monday. “So that was validating for us because we knew what happened at the scene and to see that common sense and judgment prevail that was really satisfying to see that.”

She added that it was reassuring to see the judge will allow the breath test results to be included as evidence.

No plans for rabbit population

The rabbit population around the Ladner Leisure Centre is growing, but Delta doesn’t have any plans to address it.

They may look cute and cuddly but feral bunnies are a problem in Ladner.

Municipal officials hope Mother Nature will deal with a large rabbit population that’s become more evident in recent weeks with the animals being displaced due to construction of the Delta Gymnastics building near the Ladner Leisure Centre. It’s prompted concerns by some residents about the fate of the rabbits.

The construction activity only highlights an ongoing problem of domestic rabbits being left to fend for themselves and breeding in the wild, said Delta bylaw enforcement manager Hugh Davies.

Noting there are no plans to capture the rabbits and bring them to the Delta Community Animal Shelter, Davies said a conservative estimate had the rabbit population in the 200 range.

The BCSPSA says the quality of life for feral rabbits is “suboptimal” because the availability of resources may be limited and they lack the defensive instincts to avoid predators.

Communities across B.C. have dealt with their feral rabbit populations in various ways, including attempting to trap and sterilize them to culling.

The City of Richmond bans the sale of the animals in pet stores.

The B.C. SPCA would like all municipalities to forbid the sale of unsterilized rabbits, with exceptions for legitimate breeders or organizations. The society also notes the releasing of domestic rabbits into the wild is an offence under the Criminal Code.

The campaign to stop the highly controversial harmonized sales tax will wrap up early after surpassing expectations.

Fight HST announced this week the province-wide petition to repeal the new tax, which begins July 1, broke the group’s internal threshold of 15 per cent in all 85 ridings across the province last weekend.

Organizer Chris Delaney said breaking the internal threshold of 15 per cent of registered voters in all ridings is even more significant than the minimum threshold of 10 per cent set

by Elections BC, because it ensures the margin of victory.

“This means that one of every three signatures would have to be discarded

in any one of our ridings for the petition to fail.

Our canvassers have been extremely diligent, and with a solid buffer of 35 per cent or more signatures than what is required in each of our ridings, the petition is certain to succeed,” Delaney explained.

Delaney said the overall number of signatures has reached 653,240, meaning more than 40 per cent of voters in the last election have signed the petition.

ment was rocked last week when Energy Minister Blair Lekstrom announced he left both caucus and cabinet because he could no longer push ahead with the tax when so many have raised concerns.

In his riding of Peace River South, more constituents signed the HST petition than the number of votes he needed to get elected last year.

The riding of Delta South was the first the constituency in the Lower Mainland to reach the goal of 15 per cent of registered voters.

Vander Zalm said he wonders why Campbell seems stubborn, and almost defiant, even though the people have sent him a message that’s loud and clear.

Undercover officers befriend driver

Project Angel saw Delta police department members pose as couple to strike up friendship with accused JESSICA KERR

The trial of Carol Berner continued Monday as the court heard from one of the Delta police undercover officers assigned to the investigation.

The operation was dubbed Project Angel and it featured two undercover officers posing as a couple looking to purchase a home in Ladner. They were tasked with trying to befriend Berner to try and assess if “there was any criminal culpability on the part of Ms. Berner in the accident involving Alexa Middelaer,” said one officer involved with the project.

Berner, 58, is on trial in Surrey Provincial Court charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

Berner has pleaded not guilty to the charges but did admit through her lawyer that she was driving the car involved in the collision.

Monday, which marked the beginning of the third week of the trial, was a busy one with the Crown

calling several witnesses.

The most anticipated, however, was the testimony of one of the undercover officers.

The female officer, whose identity is protected by a court-ordered publication ban, was the lead officer in the operation that included several officers playing other roles — a

boyfriend, a friend and the boyfriend of a fictitious daughter.

The operation began on Oct. 10, 2008 when the female officer and the male officer who was posing as her boyfriend made their first visit to the Sundance Inn pub in hopes of orchestrating a chance meeting with Berner.

That first trip was unsuccessful, she said, but a subsequent attempt on Oct. 22 proved successful.

The officers were able to arrive at the pub at the same time as Berner and a male friend. They went in and sat at separate tables but when Berner went outside for a cigarette, the female officer followed and the two struck

up a conversation.

“It was great. She was very friendly toward me,” the officer said during her testimony.

She said she mentioned her search for property in the area and they talked about how nice Ladner is and made “very general conversation,” the officer said.

They went back inside to their separate tables, but soon the foursome was sitting together and making plans to meet up in the near future — Berner and the female officer to shop while the men made plans to play golf.

The undercover officers were invited back to Berner’s home that night.

The officer testified they stayed for sometime but declined an invitation to stay the night.

A few days later, the plans materialized and the female officer continued to foster the friendship on the shopping trip.

The officer’s testimony was expected to continue yesterday and into today.

The trial is expected to continue until June 24.

Controversy over campaign contributions Mayor orders outside legal opinion after council members criticized for approving changes to Toigo project BY

A report will come to Delta council next week clarifying the legalities of civic politicians receiving campaign contributions.

Several residents recently raised the issue at what turned out to be a contentious public hearing on proposed amendments to the Tsawwassen Springs

housing development.

Opponents to the redevelopment of the Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club claimed there could be a perceived conflict by councillors who had accepted campaign donations from the applicant, businessman Ron Toigo.

Toigo contributed to all winning council candidates in 2008 except Anne Peterson.

Despite advice from the municipal solicitor there was no conflict, provided all contributions are declared, Coun. Heather King decided to excuse herself from the vote, citing a potential conflict.

King, who received $1,500 from Toigo’s companies, said she ran a small “grassroots” campaign in

which his donation ended up being a larger percentage.

Not pleased by King’s move, Mayor Lois Jackson ordered an outside legal opinion on the matter.

“I want to make sure we have a discussion on this issue, it’s a very important one,” said Jackson, who was not at the public hearing and heard about the allegations afterward.

Jackson said she doesn’t want any lingering doubts

“It is not acceptable and so it will be coming (to council) on June 21st,” she said.

Jackson, who ran with Robert Campbell and Scott Hamilton on a slate called the Delta Independent Voters’ Association, received $84,270 in campaign contributions. Their biggest contributions didn’t come from Toigo, who gave

Toigo’s original housing development had already been approved prior to the 2008 campaign.

At the public hearing, Toigo said there had been no changes contemplated for the project at the time of the election.

The most notable change to the Tsawwassen Springs plan would see the number of condominiums increased by 53. Toigo, noting the footprint of the buildings would remain the same, explained that larger units would be divided into smaller condos, making them more affordable for those looking to downsize.

A major reason behind the move was the controversial harmonized sales tax would hit expensive new homes, he told council.

Peterson said she would not have excused herself from the council table had she also received a campaign contribution from Toigo.

Kembo convicted on all four murder charges

Charles Kembo, the former Richmond man accused of killing four people, including a Ladner woman, has been sentenced to life in prison.

Kembo was found guilty last Friday night on all four counts of first-degree murder.

His victims included his ex-wife, Margaret Kembo, and a former lover, Sui Yin Ma, who lived in Ladner.

He was also convicted of killing his step-daughter, Rita Yeung, with whom he claimed to have had an “incestuous relationship,” and a former business associate, Arden Samuel, a Vancouver man who was found with his penis cut off and stuffed in his pocket along with a scrawled note, something the Crown suggested was a ruse designed to make police think he had been killed by a racist who was angry at Samuel, a black man, for having sex with white women.

Kembo’s trial took more

than eight months, and was complicated by the fact the body of one of the victims was never found. All of the evidence against him was circumstantial.

It took the nine-man, three-woman jury three days to return a guilty verdict Friday night.

Justice Sunni StrombergStein imposed the mandatory sentence of life in prison, with no eligibility for parole for 25 years.

“You are a predator,” said the judge. “You preyed on innocent, vulnerable people.

You betrayed the trust of your wife, your friend, your mistress and your stepdaughter, snuffing out their lives once you stood to benefit financially from their deaths.”

Kembo’s motive for murder was strictly for financial gain, according to the Crown. Kembo used his victims’ identities to drain their accounts and commit fraud.

Born in Malawi, Africa, Kembo came to Canada as a refugee and soon fell into a life of crime. He was

Hometown reason to tune in TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW I’m sure every Canadian boy who’s ever laced up a pair of skates has dreamed of one day hoisting hockey’s holy grail, the Stanley Cup. For the vast majority of hockey players, that goal remains unimaginable, but for Tsawwassen’s Brent Seabrook, it became a reality last week.

For those few out there who aren’t hockey fans, Seabrook is a defenceman for the Chicago Blackhawks, who beat the Philadelphia Flyers four games to two to give Tsawwassen’s favourite son a coveted Stanley Cup ring by the time he’s just 25.

As much as the sport is a way of life in Canada, the National Hockey League playoffs, and particularly the finals, by which time the Canucks are usually long gone, can seem a little abstract. Maybe that’s because it’s June and it’s not really hockey weather any more or perhaps it has something to do with the fact the cup combatants are usually two teams from far away places, often with rosters sporting players from even further afield.

Although Chicago and Philadelphia aren’t next door, this year’s final held a great deal of local appeal thanks to Seabrook as well as his ‘Hawk teammate, Troy Brouwer, a graduate of the North Delta Minor Hockey Association. What are the odds the cup winner has a Delta connection, let alone two? That’s about as likely as the Leafs capturing Lord Stanley’s mug anytime soon.

Anyway, the fact a former Delta Ice Hawk, a player who logged countless hours in the same rinks as starry-eyed local youngsters do today, was playing in the NHL finals was more than enough to hold our interest, despite the weather beckoning us to do something outdoors.

My 12-year-old son was engrossed

by Conn Smythe winner Jonathan Toews, overtime hero Patrick Kane and Norris finalist Duncan Keith, but it was Seabrook who really held his attention.

“Did you see him crunch that guy? Did you see the rocket he took from the point? Do you see how much ice time he’s getting?” I had to remind him I was watching the game too, but I can’t fault him for getting caught up in the excitement.

It was the same thing during this year’s Winter Olympics when the pride of Tsawwassen played on the blue line for our gold medal-winning team.

Here’s hoping with two Delta boys on the Chicago roster the Stanley Cup comes to town sometime this summer.

After a long, tough and incredibly successful season, they’ve certainly earned the right to enjoy a little hometown adulation.

Time to cut losses and move planning staff to North Delta STEVE GRAHAM

COMMUNITY COMMENT Having transferred the Community Comment column to Sylvia Bishop in December 2008, I have volunteered to cover for her while she runs in the Delta council by-election this September. There is no plan in place for what to do if she wins, which provides an appropriate segue for the subject of this column — the Tsawwassen Area Plan update process.

Most residences in Tsawwassen have received a public opinion survey form about planning options for Tsawwassen, which is to be mailed to a firm in Ontario for tabulation. This exercise is reputed to be costing Delta about $20,000.

Why, you might ask, does Delta need to spend 20K to solicit opinions from its residents in a fairly small town? The reason is that staff and council have lost all credibility in terms of being perceived to have conducted an unbiased solicita-

tion of public input in a competent manner.

The format of the initial public meetings limited the range of input by placing participants in carefully directed focus groups. This format quickly led to the presumption around town the fix was in. The presumption became so pervasive Delta finally agreed with apparent reluctance to hold open public meetings.

Notwithstanding Delta’s trepidation, these meetings were wellattended and reasonably balanced.

However, the issue of rezoning the Southlands dominated the presentations, and I concluded the naysayers outnumbered the supporters of Century’s current Southlands development plan by a moderate margin.

Apparently dissatisfied with the lack of congruence between the unconstrained public input and its agenda, Delta then sought to improve the data set by embarking on the online survey fiasco in which the computer program counted “no” responses as “yes” ones.

This was a matter of agitated conversation around Tsawwassen for a few days until Delta fessed up. This survey methodology was so egregious and careless that you

either have to conclude the director of planning demonstrated sufficient incompetence that he should be fired or the entire public consultation process was corrupt.

Several residents then suggested putting a survey on the municipal ballot in September. This was logical and economical, but who would do the counting? No, Delta’s only option by this point was to outsource its community planning function to a firm in Ontario.

It’s a sad commentary on the public administration of Delta.

Anyway, you have the survey and it’s important to fill it in, mail it to Mississauga and keep close watch on the data analysis.

Essentially, the main choice is fairly clear. Either you think Tsawwassen would be a better place with another 10,000 or so people, a decade of construction, taller buildings and people living in “coach houses” (sans horses) or you would prefer to keep it the way it is. It’s up to you; or maybe that’s just what they want you to think.

A better option, in my view, is that Delta concludes the Tsawwassen Area Plan update process is an administrative failure and terminates it forthwith. The planning department should fold its tent and move on to North Delta.

Referendum would be democracy each forum.

Following a glitch in the final online survey, Delta council voted to cancel all of the surveys and substitute a new one. This new survey, we all can see, does not replace all of the four previous forum surveys, but presents us with a much reduced version of the final forum survey on agriculture and the Southlands and a question on town centre density. All of the work that many Tsawwassen residents put into attending and responding to the first three forums has been trashed.

How democratic is that?

The new survey, again requiring the responder to be identified, has been sent to 8,000 Tsawwassen homeowners and tenants, and 360 businesses. Hopefully, since a professional third party is administering this survey, individual privacy will be assured and responders can freely speak their minds.

Before any final decisions are made about the future of the Southlands, let us hope Tsawwassen residents will have an opportunity to cast a ballot in an unambiguous referendum.

That would be democracy.

MP could have arranged meetings

Editor: Re: Lobbyist funds money well spent, says mayor, June 5 I am looking forward to the June 21 report the mayor referred to in your newspaper, outlining why it cost us (municipal taxpayers) $22,000 to hire a lobbyist to organize meetings

between Delta and Ottawa.

I hope that report also includes a detailed list of the $30 million in federal money that has flowed to Delta in the past few years.

In your story, Mayor Lois Jackson directly attributed this influx of federal funds to the efforts of the lobbying firm hired by Delta as

an argument to justify the $22,000 expenditure.

I think $30 million would have come to Delta anyway, thanks to the efforts of our longtime Conservative MP John Cummins. I’m sure he would have set up the meetings for free too, had he just been asked. Was he?

Special skateboard stolen two days after birthday Editor: What has happened to Ladner?

Fifteen years ago we moved here to raise our family in a safe, crime-free environment.

On, June 9, on his 12th birthday, my son received the special skateboard he had been wanting for months. It was a Santa Cruz

mini long board, white with black markings, and blue wheels.

Two days later, he left it outside the dollar store in Trenant Park for five minutes, and it was stolen.

Not a big deal? When a child arrived home with an expensive skateboard, I hope his/her parent asked where it came from, and did

not accept, “I found it” or “I swapped something for it” as an excuse.

The person who stole it broke a boy’s heart. Is there a chance an adult will do the honourable thing, make sure the board is returned and teach their child a much needed lesson — stealing is against the law?

a brindle pit bull, for nearly 12 years, and she was a great family dog: calm, even tempered and good with kids.

We were well aware of the pit bull stigma and made sure Tigger was socialized and well trained.

Many people were won over

by Tigger and became pit bull advocates as a result.

Owners of any breed are responsible for their dog’s actions. We believe the bylaws should reflect this.

Memorial Park was alive with music last weekend thanks to the sixth annual Ladner Bandfest. The two-day event, which featured the host Delta Music Makers (top left), the South Fraser Community Band (left) and 18 other adult bands had Anita Bigland and hubby Jay (top) dancing in the park.

Westham Island Estate Winery will be home to a Strawberry Festival fundraiser this weekend.

There will be u-pick (weather permitting) and ready-picked strawberries, a barbecue, a live band and local crafters during the two-day event.

“So far, so good,” said winery owner Lorraine Bissett of this year’s strawberry crop.

“It’s looking not too bad, considering the weather. I walked the fields yesterday and they looked pretty good,” she said Monday.

Proceeds from the concession, where hotdogs, smokies, chips, pop and strawberry shortcake will be available, will go towards the Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society and Clover Valley (Surrey Association of Community Living).

Volunteers from both groups will be there promoting awareness about their organizations.

The Blazing Saddles, a Vancouver-based country group, will perform from noon to 4 p.m. both days of the festival.

The Strawberry Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2170 Westham Island Rd.

Happy Father’s Day

We asked Optimist readers to tell us about their best holiday with dad.The winner, who will be announced Saturday, will get dinner at the Primerose and a $100 gift certificate to Home Building.

Greg, Nick and Danielle Scott had their best holiday with their dad, Jeff, over spring break when they went to Orlando, Florida. They got to go to Disneyworld and Universal Studios and stayed at awesome resorts. There are many alligators in Florida and there were some throughout the nine golf courses of their resort. They got to listen to a conservation officer talk about alligators and even got to hold a baby one. Whenever they go on vacation, the kids say dad always makes it extra fun for them. He plays in the pools and when they go to the Disney parks he gets them Fastpasses so they don’t have to wait in lines.

Byron Mack says his mom and dad love to travel and they have taken him many places, even before he turned two. This past spring break they went to Hawaii and Byron had such a fun time.

His dad Kevin took him to the beach and the pirate ship pool everyday. They watched whales, fed koi and visited the aquarium. Dad celebrated his birthday in Hawaii and his wish was for Byron to see a turtle. His wish came true.

Nine-year-old Savanna Taylor’s favourite holiday with her dad Neil was when they went to Disneyland last year. It was so much fun. Her dad surprised Savanna and her brother when he woke her up at 3 a.m. and said, “Savanna get up. Don’t scream but we are going to Disneyland today!” She was so excited and was jumping up and down. Her favourite ride was Star Tours and she went on it 11 times, or maybe more. Her second favourite ride was The Pirates of the Caribbean. Her brother Matthew loved the Teacups and Dumbo.

Kieran Ma’s favourite vacation with his dad, Arthur, was camping in the rain. To many people that might seem weird, but not for Kieran, who loves the rain. Camping in the rain is fun, but needs extra set up.

Kieran and his dad put giant insulated tarps up to cover the tents and picnic table. Kieran says his dad is awesomely tall so it makes the tarp job easier, but there is always a hard spot you just can’t reach so he climbs up a tree and attaches the tarp to the hook.

At the Long Beach campsite Kieran and his brother Darcy built giant sandcastles, road waves on buggy boards and went to the playground.

The best vacation Lola and Kira Denney went on with their dad, Jon, was to Tofino last fall. They played baseball on the beach and it was very, very fun! Baseball is their favourite game. When they weren’t playing baseball on the beach, they were flying kites, boogie-boarding with wetsuits and playing with their cousins. It was a blast!

Kaiya Chow says her best holiday with her dad Jason was going to Disneyland. They had lots of fun riding rides, seeing shows and meeting all the Disney friends.

The part she remembers the most was when she thought her teddy was going to fall into the ocean, but her dad saved it from falling into the water. When they were at the KOA, dad helped her swim in the pool. He also made her bunk bed at the cabin because he was generous.

Dad also helped Katie climb up the rope to the tower and pretended to rescue the princess. The best part of the vacation was when dad made rice for dinner.

Sierra Stubbs says she’s had many fun holidays with her dad Daryl. They have made sandcastles on the beach in Maui and snorkeled at the Great Barrier Reef. They have all been so much fun, but one of her favourite times was in Whistler when she tried the Alpine Luge Ride in the Upper Village with her dad. It was like a roller coaster. They sat in a luge that was pulled up the mountain on a track and then came winding down the mountain. Daddy made the luge go really fast!

Grassroots football programs let fans of all ages link up with the Lions “I have been involved with our grassroots football programs for many seasons now,” says Lions slotback and fan favourite Geroy Simon. “Having an opportunity to share our love of the game with our fans throughout B.C. is a great way to give back to our community and gives us a chance to get to know our fans too!”

PUNT, PASS & KICK Punt, Pass & Kick is a program designed to provide an opportunity for minor football players to test their skills in punting, passing and kicking while reinforcing their love of football.

In 2009, the BC Lions, Tim Hortons, and BC Community Football hosted competitions in 15 districts in the Lower Mainland where players at the Flag (ages 6-7), Atom (ages 8-9), Peewee (ages 10-11) and Junior Bantam (12-13) levels had the opportunity to show off their skills and compete for an individual title.

The 2010 Punt, Pass & Kick program will kick off in June, with the finals slated for the fall.

PLAY WITH THE PROS Play with the Pros matches BC Lions players with boys and girls, providing them with an opportunity to participate in a noncontact skills clinic hosted by their favourite BC Lions players.

The participants are divided into groups and rotate through various skill stations every 10-15 minutes. One player, one alumnus and one volunteer coach (local high school or community) are assigned per station, teaching skills such as

passing, receiving, pass routes and proper running techniques.

TIMBITS FOOTBALL CAMP The Timbits Football Camp is a free clinic for boys and girls between 6 and 12 years old. The program offers these children the chance to learn the basic skills of football and to play with their BC Lions heroes. Last year, more than 400 boys and girls took part in the camp.

The Tri-City Bandits were happy to remind the Ladner Pioneers who are the defending champions in the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association.

The Pioneers had not only won seven straight games to start the season but we’re stockpiling their war chest with a variety of weapons to even better their chances of representing B.C. at this summer’s national championships in Burnaby. However, the Bandits served notice it will be at least a two-horse race with a 12-10 victory in Ladner last Thursday.

The win pulled the Bandits (6-2) within a game of Ladner (7-1) in the league standings and evened the season series.

The rivals will not meet again until the playoffs.

The Pioneers now find themselves sitting second behind the Burnaby Burrards (8-1) who they have yet to meet this season. The Burrards are guaranteed a spot in the Nationals as the host team.

“I think it will be a good thing for us,” said Ladner head coach Ross Frehlick

of tasting defeat for the first time this season. “The guys needed to know that everyone has to step up and play the way they are capable against a good team like Tri-City.

“We got off to a horrible start then really hurt ourselves with four penalties in the offensive zone in the second period.”

Goalie Matt Morehouse looked shaky out of the gate and eventually pulled himself after allowing five goals. Ladner was able to answer each time and the teams entered the second period deadlocked at 5-5.

That’s when the visitors took over with four unanswered goals as the Pioneers spent much of the frame shorthanded.

The hosts were hoping to have Gary Bining for what would have been the third of a scheduled fourgame stint, however, the Ladner standout had to fly back to Boston after learning his girlfriend had broke her leg. The locals did, however, unveil their three latest signings — Mitch Diblee, Jordan Guindon and local product Jordan Flaman.

Winning just one of five games at the provincial championships wasn’t going to dampen Stephen Burns enthusiasm for his young squad.

In past years, the longtime head coach of the South Delta senior girls soccer team might have come away disappointed from the 16-team tournament with such a record. That’s how high the bar has been set during a record run of nine straight appearances.

But not this time.

With a starting 11 that featured two Grade 9 players and three more in Grade 8, the Devils had beat the odds just to be there, then turned in a com-

petitive enough performance to finish eighth.

South Delta opened the championships by battling highly-touted Burnaby Central to a scoreless draw, then fell 2-0 to Claremont. The Victoria school went on to capture the provincial title in their hometown. The Devils rebounded with a 4-0 win over Prince George to finish second in their roundrobin group, then closed out the tournament with close losses to Point Grey and league rival Elgin Park.

“I couldn’t be more happier with the way the girls played,” said Burns. “We were competitive every game with the one exception being against Claremont.

We just didn’t generate much against them. Obviously they are a strong side

and we were coming off a tough game against Central. The girls were tired.

“I can honestly say we did everything we could (to have the season we had) and the girls really came together.”

With McGill University bound Stephanie Ayers being the team’s only starter loss to graduation, the Devils maybe be poised to take a run at another provincial title, although Burns suggests that might be two years away.

“We are still going to be a very young team,” he added, noting this year’s team had just two players in Grade 11. “You really need those key Grade 12 players to drive the team with their leadership. But it’s very encouraging all our young players got to experience playing at the provincials.”

United Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Tsawwassen’s newest martial arts school, won 11 of its 15 fights at the recent 2010 West Coast Can-Am Championships.

The school came together by combining the two biggest academies in Tsawwassen — Hap do Sool Martial Arts and Total Defense System.

The team, coached by new owners Andrew Davis and Sami Gustafson, kickboxing coach Andy Raines and assistant Andrew McCorquodale, brought five fighters and walked away with nine medals.

Pankration (a greek form of mixed martial arts) and Adi Zemel, 12, made his tournament debut, by fighting in two separate Pankration divisions. He finished each match with a submission, earning two gold medals.

Competing in the youth division, Justin DeRoy won silver in Amateur Modified Muay-Thai, while in Pankration, he submitted his first opponent with an arm bar and ended up winning bronze after his second fight went to decision.

Also in the youth division was Cameron Bryan, bringing home gold in both Pankration and Amateur Modified Muay-Thai, winning by submission and

TKO respectively.

Chris Pope, competing in the men’s division, brought home silver after winning two of three fullcontact Pankration matches.

He also added a bronze medal in Amateur Modified Muay-Thai.

The coaches of United Martial Arts are very proud of their students’ efforts, and only see them getting stronger, faster and more technically skilled as they continue their training in Mixed Martial Arts. Davis and Gustafson are excited for future tournaments as they see that passion and sportsmanship developing in several other up-andcoming students.

Obituaries

PATTERSON Carol Anne Passed away June 8, 2010, at Delta Hospital. A strong spirit and inner strength kept her going for several years in her battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Carol was born in Toronto 1943 to Helen and John Murdie. The family moved to Ottawa where she attended school and graduated into university with honors. She moved west in February of 1968 to visit family and found work and decided to stay. That summer she met Bob and they were married the same year in December. They moved to Tsawwassen in 1971. Carol was predeceased by both parents and her brother Jock as well. She leaves Bob, sons, Scott and Michael (Christine), two grandchildren Kaia and Alley, plus a large extended family and many friends. We thank everyone at Delta Hospital for all the help and compassion they extended over the many times we needed to be there.
