A familiar face will not be seen on the campaign trail during the upcoming Delta council by-election. Former five-term councillor Krista Engelland announced this week she will not seek the seat left vacant by the death of longtime councillor George Hawksworth in March. In an e-mail to the Optimist, Engelland said that while she thinks she is the best candidate she has decided not to run in the Sept. 18 by-election due to health concerns. She suffered a bad fall last winter and injured her back. “I am still recovering from the injury and will be embarking on a rehabilitation program,” she said. “I have found it be a long, slow road to recovery and my participation in travel and attending meetings and functions has been very much curtailed. “After careful consideration, I have decided not to run for office

After testimony in the voir dire — a trial within a trial to determine the admissibility of evidence — wrapped up Monday afternoon judge Peder Gulbransen granted
a one-day adjournment to give lawyers on both sides a chance to prepare their arguments. Defense lawyer David Tarnow, who is representing Carol Berner, is expected to ask the judge to exclude several pieces of evidence presented by Delta police Const. Sarah Swallow. Berner is on trial in Surrey Provincial Court on charges of impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving caus-
