Civic by-election date set

Voters go to polls Sept. 18 to fill council seat left vacant by death of George Hawksworth BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Delta voters will go to the polls Sept. 18 in a municipal by-election. Delta council set the date Monday for the by-election to fill the seat vacated by the sudden death of six-term councillor George Hawksworth in March. The Local Government Act requires Delta to hold a by-election because the seat would otherwise be left unfilled for longer than six months before the next general election, which isn’t until November of next year. Longtime Tsawwassen resident Sylvia Bishop was the first candidate to declare, announcing her intention to run two weeks ago. Bishop listed the development

proposal for the Southlands in Tsawwassen as her number one issue. Another potential candidate is former councillor Krista Engelland. First elected in 1993, Engelland lost the mayor’s race to Lois Jackson in 2008 and found herself off council for the first time in 15 years. Prior to this week’s meeting, when asked about her plans, Engelland told the Optimist she had a couple of things to consider and wasn’t prepared to announce anything at this time. Meanwhile, council hasn’t ruled out the possibility of having an opinion question regarding the Southlands on the by-election

ballot. Opponents to the development proposal on the controversial property have been demanding a referendum on the issue, saying it could take place during the by-election. CAO George Harvie told council there’s still time this summer to add a question if council chooses. However, he recommended discussion on that possibility be deferred for a couple of months. He pointed out the municipality will mail out a survey, through Ipsos Reid, containing several questions for every Tsawwassen household and business in early

June. “I want to make it clear right now, the Southlands will be the first question,” said Harvie. The results of the mail-out survey will also help the Tsawwassen Area Plan Committee determine what areas of the current area plan it should focus on when making recommendations, said Harvie. He added the survey would cost around $15,000, on top of the $60,000 already spent so far on the area plan process. Jackson said the participation rate for the survey would likely be much higher than a question on a by-election ballot. The survey will also be available for Tsawwassen residents at the Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre and at the South Delta Recreation Centre.

Civic politicians are concerned TransLink may be planning to reduce bus service between South Delta and the Canada Line station in Richmond. The transportation authority’s plan to control costs has made that scenario a possibility, according to municipal staff, which told Delta council TransLink hasn’t made clear how it intends to meet its cost savings goal. “They’ve given no particulars and it’s a concern for the community. We’re looking for clarification what the impact will be on this community,” engineering director Steven Lan told council. His report notes TransLink staff recently made two presentations to Metro Vancouver’s Mayors’ Council. The first gave a financial overview of TransLink, focusing on financial results of 2009 and 2010. TransLink’s stated emphasis since mid-2008 has been on cost containment and core service delivery, he wrote. The second presentation described efficiency measures called the Service Rationalization Initiative (SRI). Lan explained SRI is designed to maximize productivity by allocating resources more effectively with the goal of increasing system-wide productivity by two per cent. “The SRI is currently in the early stages and there is no indication of how its results may impact Delta residents,” the report stated. However, the concern in Delta has already been raised that increased bus frequency between the Ladner exchange and the rapid transit station in Richmond could be scaled back to reduce costs. Coun. Anne Peterson said TransLink promised greater frequency after it eliminated the direct #601 bus service from South Delta to Downtown Vancouver. “The frequency of buses to See BUS page 3

Dogged by the threat of eviction MS sufferer runs into trouble with landlord of Ladner housing complex over seizure alert dog BY

do certain things — alert others in the home or fetch medication — in the case of a seizure. Hermens said when she gets her dog she hopes to have it outfitted with a call button that will be directly linked to her boyfriend’s cellphone. She said when he gets a call and hears nothing, or just the dog, he will know she’s having a seizure and will be able to call an ambulance. Excited about what this

could mean for her and her family, Hermens set out to start the process a few weeks ago and contacted her landlord. She lives in the Ladner Willows subsidized housing complex with her two daughters. The building has a policy that prohibits residents from having dogs and cats. The Guide Dog Act of B.C. states people who require certified guide dogs cannot be discrimi-

nated against and must be afforded the same rights as everyone else when it comes to entering buildings, businesses or renting accommodations. Canines must undergo specific training before the Ministry of Public Safety can certify them as a guide dog. Professional training can be quite costly and Hermens plans to train the dog herself. Hermens said her landlord was on board at first,

but when she told her the dog would have to live with her while it was being trained, the story changed. She was told that if she got a dog she would face eviction. Hermens argues it is impossible to train her dog outside of her home with someone else. She said it must get to know her and what happens when she has a seizure. Alla Rybalko, property manager for Red Door

Housing Society, which runs Ladner Willows among many other subsidized housing units in the Lower Mainland, said the seizure dog would be considered a service dog, not a guide dog, and the society was advised service dogs are not covered under the Guide Dog Act. “That means our policy is in effect,” she said, adding the society wants to do everything by the book. However, a spokesperson from the Ministry of Public Safety said with the proper training a seizure alert dog can be certified as a guide dog. Since the issue was raised in late April, Hermens said she has received several notices from Red Door regarding alleged breaches of her rental agreement, all of which she claims are unfounded. Last week, she received an eviction notice for “breach of a material term of the tenancy agreement that was not corrected within a reasonable term after written notice.” She said she has done nothing wrong and plans to appeal the notice through the Residential Tenancy Branch. “I will not be leaving.”

higher demand routes. He said the review is a system-wide analysis to improve productivity, but there will be no net cut in the system. Mike Shiffer, TransLink’s vice-president of planning, said that as far as the current #601 service to Richmond, it’s part of the review of all routes.

“We’re looking at everything across the board. Does it mean there will ever be an unfilled seat? No. “You’re also looking at that bus and what’s the nature of how that bus is used over the course of the day, and what’s the most efficient way to do it. If you were only providing rush hour service, it’s a very different kind of product than the product you need to provide throughout the course

of a day when people need to get to medical appointments, etc. We’re very early in this process of collecting data.” According to TransLink’s presentation to the mayors, last year the transportation authority had a deficit of $67 million and revenue shortfall of $35 million. Last fall, regional mayors agreed to give TransLink $130 million in additional funding to maintain status

quo for services. Shiffer noted that funding only prevented substantial reductions. As far as changes for routes with lighter ridership, Shiffer said it doesn’t automatically mean there would be cuts because TransLink is also following several key principles, including not isolating communities, maintaining network connectivity and minimizing service reduc-

tions in areas where there are no alternatives. “The important thing is that we’re being good stewards with the public’s money and working hard to get there. At the same time, we recognize we’re providing a service, so you have to try to strike that balance,” said Shiffer. He added that service changes could begin as soon as late summer or early fall.

Angela Hermens says she’s facing eviction just because she’s trying to obtain the tools needed to help her live a more normal life. Hermens, who recently moved from Alberta to Ladner, where she was born and raised, has multiple sclerosis and suffers from frequent seizures as a result of a scar on her brain. She’s been having the seizures for more than 10 years, but the condition worsened two years ago after a car accident. Hermens said she takes medication to try and control the episodes, but it doesn’t always work. When she does have a seizure, she said she will often have four or five over the course of a couple hours and frequently requires hospitalization. Hermens recently found out she qualifies for a seizure alert dog, which is able to sense when someone is going to have a seizure and will change behaviour to warn that an episode is imminent. While no dog can be trained to detect seizures, it is something some just do instinctually. A seizure alert dog can be trained to

Some truck drivers will soon have to find a new way into and out of Ladner. The TransLink board of directors has approved overnight truck restrictions on Ladner Trunk Road between Highway 17 and Anderson Place. The restrictions are in place between 8 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. Civic politicians have approved the installation of signs on Delta roadways to signify the restrictions and municipal staff will also work with the Ministry of Transportation to have similar signs installed at key locations on provincial roadways. Traffic data collected by municipal staff last year suggests that a nighttime truck restriction would remove about 20 to 30 trucks from Ladner Trunk Road daily. “Restricting truck traffic during this time would provide an appreciable benefit to residents living adjacent to Ladner Trunk Road by decreasing nighttime

noise and on-street parking concerns,” according to a report last year from Steven Lan, assistant director of engineering. The TransLink board has also honoured another of Delta’s requests by removing Ladner Trunk Road between Highway 17 and 72nd Street from the Major Road Network once South Fraser Perimeter Road is completed. “We’ve been waiting for that one for a ling time,” said Mayor Lois Jackson. Boundary Bay Airport requires access via Ladner Trunk Road for the movement of goods and access to future industrial lands, so the road east of 72nd Street will remain in the network. Delta would also like to see the road removed from the Regional Truck Route System, which would force through truck traffic to use an alternate route. However, that must be done through a separate request to the TransLink board. Municipal staff recommended making the request once SFPR is fully operational.

Young professionals visit Delta thanks to Rotary Exchange program brings news anchor to B.C. BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

For Melanie Severino, taking part in a Rotary exchange program has been a worthwhile experience. The news anchor with ABS-CBN, a media and entertainment company based in the Philippines, took part in a 30-day trip to B.C. Severino, who’s from Davao City in the southern Philippines, said she’s learned a lot during her time in Canada. She’s worked in TV and radio for nine years. Severino visited Virgin

Radio, the CBC, newspapers in Kitimat and Prince George as well as stopping by the Delta Optimist office last Wednesday along with exchange group leader Elvie Eullaran-Albano. “The main purpose of a group study exchange team is for young professionals, like Melanie, ... to get to experience how their vocation is being practiced over here in Canada and to exchange ideas with actual practitioners of that vocation,” said Eullaran-Albano, a lawyer in the Philippines. She said other members of her group included Reynold John Madamba,

who works with a shipping company called American President Lines, and Alvin Concha, a doctor specializing in family medicine. Besides the vocational portion of the trip, other highlights for Severino were seeing a Frank Sinatra Jr. concert and riding a gondola in Whistler. “If you could bring snow to the Philippines, we’d do that,” she said. “We don’t have snow there.” Eullaran-Albano explained the exchange program is a Rotary International project and a team from Canada already visited the Philippines.

Tilbury’s SEI Industries is leading the way when it comes to developing technology in the fight against forest fires. The province’s fire crews will be testing some of the company’s newest technology, which is expected to speed the delivery of water to small wildfires, this summer. The apparatus, dubbed the Bambi Bucket Off-Load Port, allows fire crews to fill portable water tanks, which are typically used to support ground crews on smaller fires, from an airborne helicopter bucket. Currently, to fill one of the tanks, a pilot needs to land, detach the water bucket and take a crew person away from the fire line to help load it onto the helicopter. The crew member must then fly with the pilot to a water source, fill the tank and return to the fire where it must be offloaded. The Coastal Fire Centre’s aviation section and provincial air carriers worked closely with SEI Industries to develop the Off-Load Port. The initial concept came from a Vancouver Island pilot. The company examined it and determined that an opportunity existed to create a product that could be engineered into its line. “SEI is an industry leader in innovative firefighting equipment,” said Shawn Bethel, firefighting division manager. “Much of our success over the past 30 years comes from the valuable feedback we get from agencies like the Wildfire Management Branch and helicopter operators.” B.C. Wildfire Management Branch crews will provide feedback at the end of the 2010 wildfire season to help refine the technology prior to commercial release. *** One South Delta business took advantage of the nice weather recently and raised some money for a local charity. On May 1, Double R Rentals in Ladner Village hosted a barbecue with all proceeds going to the Delta Hospital Foundation. In an extremely busy afternoon, the equipment rental company sold out of hot dogs and raised $300.

Deals force return visit to sale TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW The Olympics may be a fading memory, but the remnants of the sporting spectacle can still be found in Ladner. I shop out of necessity, not for sport, so when it was announced a couple of months back the giant warehouse used for the 2010 Winter Games would be open to the public for an Olympic-sized garage sale, I was intrigued, but not overly motivated. I’m sure I like a bargain as much as the next guy, but given I’ve got an adequate supply of folding chairs and nightstands, the ongoing sale didn’t hold a lot of interest. I’m not certain whether it was the lure of a deal, the idea of keeping the Olympics alive for a moment longer or sheer curiosity, but I ventured, along with my 12-year-old, bargain-seeking son, to the Hopcott Road warehouse last weekend to see what I would find. Far too late to get a sniff of the sought after electronics, we wandered around looking at everything from seed spreaders and shovels to luggage sets and shower curtains. Save for the clothing at the back, you’re hard pressed to know this sale has anything to do with the 2010 Games as it has the decided feel of one of those bankruptcy liquidation places. Mind you, that’s pretty much what is after all. Among the bundles of used hangers and bottles of hand sanitizer were enough potential deals we felt it required a call home to bring our shopping expert into the mix. On arrival my wife quickly confirmed there were bargains to be had, but with the lineup for the cashiers at least 100 deep, and someone estimating it would take about an hour to navigate, we thought better of it. As much as the duvet and knapsack were good value, they weren’t, at least in my estimation, worth standing in line for an hour or more, particularly not when my internal lunch bell had already been ringing for some time. As far as I was concerned, we came, we saw and we almost bought. I had satisfied my curiosity and was quite prepared to walk away and never see the inside of that place again. I got agreement in terms of bypassing the enormous line in favour of lunch, but the part about never seeing the place again didn’t go quite as well as I had hoped. Apparently I should have known the deals were simply too good to pass up. So back we went the next morning, making the long trek to line up outside the warehouse by 9 a.m., all in an effort to claim our bit of Olympic inventory. Thankfully, I’m told it will be the last time I’ll ever see the place.

Lazy public has allowed those in gov’t to do as they please DEBBIE McBRIDE

COMMUNITY COMMENT Democratic governments can only rightfully govern the people while they have the trust of those who elected them into office. Once that trust is compromised or broken, it becomes ethically and morally impossible to claim they represent the people who elected them. At every level of government today we see politicians who see nothing wrong with misleading (a nice word for lying), ignoring and insulting the public’s intelligence. We have seen the emergence of a new class of gentry who seem to look at the electorate as an inconvenient nuisance they must pander to every couple of years to get elected. It has become acceptable to promise anything and everything to the public before an election. If they happen to withhold certain important facts during the campaign or accept large amounts

of money from those who have a vested interest in getting them elected, well, that’s just how things are done. When the public starts to question those who govern them and after being blatantly ignored, demanding they be listened to, they’re told they just don’t have all the facts or are uninformed. If we did we’d agree with them and the decisions they are making. Interesting then, that more and more decisions are made behind closed doors, provincially, in cabinet, and locally, as Mayor Lois Jackson aptly put at last week’s council meeting, at sidebars. She acknowledged numerous complaints by the public about the lack of information being made easily available where major projects and decisions are concerned. Of course, she and fellow council members didn’t agree with that notion and then proceeded to lecture about how council and staff were being “bullied” by the public when they demanded more information be made available so they could be better informed. She then presided over a council meeting that only lasted 40 minutes. Why did mayor and council take just five minutes to deal with a staff report that allows a devel-

oper to change three covenants and other amenities to his already approved project? Where were the questions and clarifications that used to be part and parcel of council meetings, especially where so many changes are being requested? Does lack of discussion at council table mean they accept whatever staff puts in front of them or have these issues already being dealt with away from the council table and public scrutiny? Our council meetings are getting shorter even as Delta residents are demanding more information be made available to them. Yet councillors regularly vote on reports and bylaws after stating they hadn’t had time to read the report before them. The public has been lazy and has let this type of governance evolve and we’ve allowed those in public life to think they are actually autocratic monarchies that can do whatever they like. No more. The HST recall petition being supported in overwhelming numbers is proof the tax has broken the camel’s back and possibly the provincial Liberals as well. After admitting to losing the trust of Delta residents, Delta council had better put on its listening ears and include a referendum question with the by-election.

have read what happened in Montreal because of its recent success against Pittsburgh. I don’t think Vancouver wants to go through something similar again, even for Lord Stanley’s trophy. Residents here in Tsawwassen who have to get up early for work will be able to get a good night’s rest and not be disturbed at three in the morning by late night revelers cruising the streets or next door neighbours armed with air horns. More importantly, the cupboards are still loaded with snacks that had been reserved for a Canucks Stanley Cup series and I get the remote back. Life is good. I am happy. Besides, there is always next year for those going through withdrawal. Thank you, Vancouver Canucks — in more ways than one. David Horvath

more on the tube than just that. The other day, while my wife was attending meetings, I was looking for the remote so I could watch a couple of my favourite shows I had recorded. If it were not for the Canucks shrine that took over our living room I would have found it much sooner. When I did find it I discovered my shows had been recorded over by the hockey playoffs. Hmmm, she and I really must talk about this one day. Part of me feels sad for my beloved that the Canucks were eliminated but then there is often a silver lining when it comes to adversity and disappointment. Vancouver saves possibly over $1 million in policing costs and the city avoids what it went through back in 1994. Some of you may

Editor: I’m thankful summer is just around the corner because after my wife reads this she will probably relegate me to sleeping on the couch for the next three months. You see, she is a diehard Canucks fan. Well, the expression diehard may be putting it mildly. The other day she served pancakes that were shaped like little hockey pucks each with a Canucks logo. Coffee was served in Canucks mugs replete with little Canucks umbrella stir sticks. Where she got those I’ve no idea. Ladies, there is a lot of truth in those commercials where the wife packs a suitcase and pillow for her husband as he sets off to watch the playoffs with his buddies. Around our place the roles are reversed. I, too, enjoy the hockey playoffs but there has to be

FOR SALE BY OWNER

Editor: Re: Incomplete HST question fails to look at real issue, letter to the editor, May 15 Keith Hand’s proposed alternate Feedback question is an extremely red and odious herring. His taunts about sheep and integrity would be better aimed at Gordon Campbell and his “democratically elected government,” which should have put the “honest” question Hand proposes to the electorate. It instead continually promised to maintain services and run a deficit of no more than $495 million, without once mentioning

any HST bribe. A bribe incidentally, that must be borrowed by the feds since they are running a huge deficit themselves. As federal taxpayers in a have province, we will have to help pay it off. They also told us repeatedly during the election the Olympic security budget would not exceed $175 million when most were shouting a billion, that the deficit would be $495 million when many observers were predicting the correct $2.8 billion neighbourhood, and they failed to recognize a worldwide economic collapse while it was happening.

Now they would have us believe they can predict the exact number of jobs the HST will create 10 years into the future! The HST may prove beneficial to some in the long run; but it is a $1.8 billion per year tax shift from business to the general populace and was instituted by a government that promised it wouldn’t. Hand asks: “What should the provincial government have done when the federal government offered the deal after the election?” My answer is it should have declined — unless and until it obtains our consent. Lew Edwardson

B.C.’s drunk driving laws aren’t stiff enough

Editor: Re: Daughter’s death not in vain, May 15 Solicitor General Mike de Jong’s statement that the province’s new impaired driving laws are the stiffest in the country is a joke and he almost sounds proud of the accomplishment. A person that makes a

choice to drink and drive potentially can be in a situation to kill someone. Handing out fines for an alcohol level of 0.05 to 0.08 and giving this person another chance to kill? In this particular case, it is the provincial government that’s at fault for not introducing laws that are

based on zero tolerance (take away the person’s driver licence for life at the first offence with a criminal record). Laurel and Michael Middelaer should have added the provincial government (Mike de Jong) to the civil lawsuit. Othmar A. Brunner

Critical thinking stops when tax is mentioned

Editor: Re: Incomplete HST question fails to look at real issue, letter to the editor, May 15 Kudos to Keith Hand for placing the HST opposition where it belongs: In the hands of irresponsible voters who cannot see the forest for the trees or, cannot weigh the consequences because the word “tax” is directly connected to their “thinking off ” switch. Some people, I recently discovered, not only like their televisions in the den and the family room and the kitchen and the bedroom and the living room. They also like them in the bathroom. I discovered this on a recent vacation. I was in a lovely tourist destination. I was in a lovely hotel. The lovely suite had a TV in the room. And the lovely suite had a TV in the bathroom. “There’s a TV in the bathroom,” I informed the husband after we had checked into the lovely hotel at the lovely tourist destination. “Why is there a TV in the bathroom?” “No idea,” the husband said. “Why don’t you ask the chambermaid?” And so I did. I went into the lovely hall TIRES

My husband was reclining on the lovely bed. “You’re asking too many questions,” he said. Still: there it was. Some people, it occurred to me, probably watch an entire episode of American Idol, not while relaxing on the couch, but while putting on the make-up. Or while curling the hair. Or while shaving the legs. “We should probably get a TV for the bathroom,” I told the husband. “You, know, just so we don’t get a reputation as really backward people.” “Or maybe,” he said, “we could dare to stand apart from the rest. We could be singular. Distinct. We could be part of that rapidly shrinking crowd: non-bathroom TV people.” I nodded. And so, in our house, the bathroom will continue to be a place to shower. And to brush the teeth. And to do other stuff. But if you want to watch American Idol, you’ll have to use the den.

and found the lovely chambermaid. “There’s a TV in our bathroom,” I told her. She cocked her head. She smiled. “Yes, there is,” she said. “Is that a problem?” “Well,” I said. “I can understand why there’s a sink. And a shower. And, you know, a toilet. But a television?” The chambermaid smiled and I returned to the ultralovely suite in the supersweet hotel. My husband was watching television. But not in the bathroom. “Do you think,” I asked him, “that this is a trend we haven’t been paying attention to? I mean, are we the last people on the planet who don’t have a TV in our bathroom? Do you think there are people you visit our home who might be thinking we’re incredibly backward because we don’t have a TV in the loo? I mean, we don’t want to appear incredibly backward, do we?”

A14 The Delta Optimist May 19, 2010 Feedback

With the Ladner Leisure Centre getting close to 20-years-old, plans are in the works to make improvements to the civic facility. The first phase of a new long-term plan includes removing the waterslide and

replacing it with a rain shower feature. As well, the drop zone pool would be converted into a therapy spa. The first phase would cost about $350,000. The Optimist asked:

Does the leisure centre need a makeover?

John Muise Yes, but not in the water area. It needs a makeover in the fitness area. It’s very, very small.

Kenzie Hooper Yes, probably. It’s been the same for years.

You can have your say on this issue by taking part in our web poll at www. delta-optimist.com

Kevin Tyc Yes, I think it needs a makeover. It’s getting pretty grungy in there. The change rooms are pretty gross on the feet.

Jeff Pearson To be honest, I’d like to see our property taxes come down. I don’t think it needs a change, personally.

Last week we asked you:

What do you think of the property tax hike? • 75 per cent said that’s too high. • 17.5 per cent said that’s fine with me.

Advertising in the

• 7.5 per cent said I would have accepted a larger jump.

Seabrook heads Delta’s best of past year

Tsawwassen blueliner recognized for helping Canada win gold and being a key to Blackhawk’s post-season run

Recognized for their athletic achievements in the past year include (far left) Ladner’s Malcolm Smillie (Masters), (above) Brent Seabrook (professional athlete) and (left) Lindsay McElroy (female youth athlete). They along with the rest of the winners will be honoured at the Delta Sports Hall of Fame Banquet of Champions on June 12 at the Beach Grove Golf Club. Seabrook is also scheduled to be the keynote speaker unless the Blackhawks are still in the hunt for the Stanley Cup. ing kid at every level he’s played,” said Giants head coach Don Hay. “He chases the puck with reckless abandon and comes across as being fearless.” Lindsay McElroy Female Youth Athlete This multi-sport athlete from Tsawwassen excelled in softball, soccer, volleyball and basketball in the past year. McElroy participated at the 2009 Canada Summer Games in PEI where she helped Team B.C. win gold. The Delta Heat product also was co-winner of the organization’s Hannah Anderson Memorial Award, for leadership, commitment and sportsmanship. McElroy’s prominence on the diamond continued this past spring

as a freshman for the UBC Thunderbirds. She capped her high school career last June by being named the top female athlete at South Delta secondary school.

Over the course of his collegiate career, he earned Gulf Coast Athletic All-Conference honours, Second Team All-Louisiana and NAIA All-American Honourable Mention status.

Brent Lavallee Male Amateur Athlete This product of the highly successful North Delta Blue Jays baseball program, earned a fullride scholarship to LSU Shreveport where he put together a standout collegiate career. He established a school record for most career games at catcher, despite having to red shirt two years ago due to an injury. His first series back in the line-up saw Lavallee produce five home runs and 12 RBIs.

Jackie Trautman Female Amateur Athlete This North Delta native enjoyed another outstanding year at all levels of women’s field hockey. The University of Alberta sophomore was named Canada West Player of the Year and All-Canadian in leading her team to a second place finish at the national championships where she earned All-Tournament honours. Trautman also picked-up her first two international caps when she played for Canada at the Champions

John Mantei Coach This North Delta secondary graduate has enjoyed an outstanding five-year run as head coach of the Tsawwassen Triple Threat — guiding the Metro girls soccer team to four Coastal Cup championships and a pair of provincial cup titles. Malcolm Smillie Masters Athlete This Ladner resident continued his dominance on the track last summer by retaining his titles in the 800 and 1500 metre events at the Provincial Masters Track and Field Championships in Nanaimo. He has won these races for the past 10 years in two different age divisions — 40-44 and 45-49. He is now looking forward to more success in the 5054 class. He may be a key member of the Chicago Blackhawks but that hasn’t prevented Brent Seabrook from compiling fond memories in his hometown. Back in February, the standout defenceman from Tsawwassen helped Canada capture Olympic gold in Vancouver with a thrilling overtime win against the United States. And for the second straight year, Seabrook had a prominent role in ousting the Vancouver Canucks from the Stanley Cup playoffs. Paired with fellow Canadian Olympian Duncan Keith, the former Delta Ice Hawk typically logged over 25-minutes a game and was usually matched up against the Canucks top line featuring Henrik and Daniel Sedin. It’s these accomplishments that has the 25-yearold heading this year’s Delta Sports Champions — a reflection on athletic excellence by local athletes, teams and volunteers in the past 12 months. The winners will be honoured June 12 at the Beach Grove Golf Club as part of the Delta Sports Hall of Fame’s Banquet of Champions. Here’s a rundown of the other Sports Champions winners: Brendan Gallagher Male Youth Athlete Like Seabrook, this South Delta Minor product from Tsawwassen has also had an outstanding season in the hockey rink. The 17year-old enjoyed a breakout season with the Vancouver Giants, finishing with 81 points, including 41 goals. Throughout his career he has continued to prove his smaller stature (5-foot-9) doesn’t mean he can’t thrive at all levels of hockey. Now. there’s a good chance he will be selected in June’s NHL Entry Draft. “He’s been a hard-work-

CHAMPIONS from page 18 Mantei, who has his National “B” license coaching certification, is also involved in the Super-Y spring league — guiding the Coastal FC U14 boys team. Last season, he was an assistant for the U13 squad that advanced to the North American Championships. Ladner Midget Red Sox Team It was quite the summer in 2009 for this all-star baseball team, first capturing the provincial Midget AA championship then finishing second at the Western Canadians. Ladner rolled through

qualification play with a 9-1 record, then continued the momentum at the provincials where the locals blasted Campbell River 10-3 in the gold medal game. Coached by George Pinter and Paul Wong, the Red Sox opened the Westerns with wins over Manitoba and Saskatchewan before facing Newton in an all-B.C. final. The hosts rallied late to pull out the win. “Losing in the finals hurt, but we had a great season,” said Pinter. Theresa Watts Volunteer Add another honour for

the Tsawwassen hockey mom that stepped up for the “little guys” almost seven years ago. That’s when the Richmond school teacher saw a void for South Delta house hockey players during the holiday season and launched the Party In Da House Tournament. The four-day event now assures every recreational player in South Delta Minor Hockey gets to be part of the action and excitement each season. Watt’s efforts were recognized last year when she was named the RBC Local Hockey Leader for B.C. She was honoured at the Hockey Hall of Fame and was given the opportunity to be an Olympic torchbearer.

Pope also placed sixth overall and made the finals in the uneven bars, earning another silver. Pope overcame an ankle injury to finish a solid 10th overall. She made finals on the uneven bars, placing fifth and was seventh in the floor event. On the men’s side, Willems delivered an outstanding performance — finishing second overall in National Open, with first place scores on the pommel horse and high bar. Ross finished in the top 10 in the same category thanks to a fourth on the pommel horse. Farquharson placed eighth overall in Level 4. In National Youth , Starko was 11th on rings and 12th on vault. Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
