Conservatives will select a candidate in DeltaRichmond East Monday night.

Anticipating a potential federal election this spring, the party is scrambling to have all its candidates in place. Nomination papers had to be in the hands of party officials in Ottawa by late yesterday afternoon.

John Cummins, the MP here since 1993, as well as two other longtime B.C. MPs, announced last weekend they won’t be running in the next federal election.

The rapid nomination and selection process for their replacements is highly unusual, since most political nominations give candidates a period to file and sign up new members before an actual vote.

In all three ridings, votes will take place Monday.

The voting system will work very much like the recent provincial Liberal leadership vote in which party members select a first and second choice. The last place finisher after the first round of voting, if no candidate achieves 50 per cent, is eliminated and the second choices on those ballots are redistributed. If nobody achieves a majority after the redistribution, then there’s another round of voting.

until an election is called, which means his replacement will have to play a waiting game if the writ isn’t dropped soon.

The Liberals and NDP haven’t scheduled nomination meetings in the riding yet. Green spokesperson Rob Hines said the party has a prospective candidate but that person hasn’t been appointed yet. He said he expects the other parties will simply appoint candidates if an election is called.

The man was acquitted on a third charge of obstruction of justice after telling another student to erase a cellphone video of the assault right after it happened.

Dohm said the accused could not have known at the time that there would be judicial proceedings in the future.

The man will be sentenced May 27.

Board must look after ‘grey area’ students

The Delta school board is about to find out what kind of budget deficit it faces for next year.

Chair Dale Saip said Tuesday the district received its numbers from Victoria this week but needs additional information and to work out the allocation figures.

Last spring, to make up a $4 million shortfall for

2010/11, the board agreed to make $3.1 million in cuts and dip into reserves for the rest to balance the books.

No schools were closed, but almost 17 teachers, 16 support staff and an administrative position were eliminated. There was also a reduction in school supplies, including text books, as well as special needs assistance and learning resources.

Noting the board has a difficult task, Delta Teachers’ Association president Paul Steer listed several recommendations for trustees, including submitting a needs budget to show Victoria how much it really costs to run a school district.

“Consistently, year over year for the past decade, you’ve been asked by government to do more with less. Knowing it is impossible for you to do more with less, only less with less, you have done your best, I believe, to engage in a form of educational triage, doing the best you can to maintain

educational programs and services within the obvious limitations of your funding,” he said.

Steer also noted the district needs to allocate resources where they’re needed the most, especially for so-called grey area students who aren’t officially designated as special needs but are struggling.

He said teachers are increasingly finding themselves with fewer resources and less access to specialists to assist them.

“Grey area students include up to 20 per cent of students in typical classrooms. Unlike so-called special needs students who comprise 10 per cent of the student population, grey area students experience

increase of $58 million over current funding levels. The per-pupil funding will be an estimated $8,357, the highest ever, according to the ministry.

The NDP slammed new Premier Christy Clark, saying a $44 per pupil funding increase fails to cover the costs facing school districts.

The board has to adopt a balanced budget by June 30.

The Delta police department is looking for a few good students for this year’s Student Police Academy.

The week-long summer program is designed to expose grade 11 and 12 students who are interested in a career in law enforcement to the realities of police work and training.

The program is modeled after the training police recruits undergo at the Justice Institute.

“They will learn about criminal and traffic laws, problem solving, receive physical training and instruction in use of force, advanced driving and firearms,” said spokesperson Sgt. Sharlene Brooks.

According to the program information pamphlet, students must have a “strong technical base and a serious, passionate attitude toward dance; ballet and jazz training preferred.”

The students will hold two performances during the year.

The Delta school board this week approved starting another fee-paying academy at a local high school.

A dance academy will begin this September at Delta Secondary in Ladner.

Noting they’ve already begun accepting applications, district vice-principal Teresa Phillips said the key for students wanting to be in the program is a passion for dance.

Held at Genesis Theatre, the program is available to boys and girls in grades 9 to 12. It will be a twoblock program that is also open to students attending South Delta Secondary in Tsawwassen.

“It is going to be an allencompassing dance program. Typically, when a student goes to a dance studio they will study one genre of dance, where this will have core genres in ballet, jazz, contemporary lyrical and hip hop. Students will learn all those,” said Phillips, noting a ballet instructor will also be hired.

The program will also cover other styles, including salsa, ballroom and flamenco.

As far as the summit, Jackson said the plan is to have invited individuals sit down at a table in what could be several meetings.

The list of who will take part won’t be available at this time but all that information will be in the final report to council.

“I’m not going into the question of terms of reference and details. I’m probably one of the most transparent people around, but I think this is a time when people have to be patient and see if there’s any ability for us to move forward,” she said.

Noting the invitations have been sent out and she hopes to start meeting soon, the mayor said, “Whatever comes out of the meeting will be reported to council at an open meeting. It’s almost like going into union negotiations. You go into a room with several different people with several different ideas.”

The process could end up seeing the public hearing continue or perhaps even end for a new bylaw process, she added.

The summit will include Jackson as chair, one additional member of council, CAO George Harvie, Century Group, as the major landowner, plus two representatives of its choice, two representatives from the community supportive of the ALR inclusion application, and one representative each from the farming and environmental communities.

Century Group president Sean Hodgins told the Optimist he doesn’t know yet when and where meetings will be held.

On a related note, Hodgins said he didn’t think much of the newly formed B.C. Ecological Agricultural Trust Society (BCEATS) announcement of a $205 million offer to purchase the Southlands.

Listing many glaring deficiencies, including no indication BCEATS is an eligible recipient for consideration of a federal Ecological Gifts Fund, and not showing the financial capacity to purchase the land, Hodgins called the offer nothing more than a publicity stunt.

It’s not rocket science, Delta’s mayor says about her upcoming summit on the Southlands.

In an interview with the Optimist this week, Lois Jackson said there’s been some misconception and harsh criticism of the “mayor’s summit” she announced last week when adjourning the public hearing on the Tsawwassen Area Plan.

The most controversial element of the proposed area plan is the recommendation Delta apply to the Agricultural Land Commission to have the 538-acre Southlands placed back in the ALR. The public hearing was heading into its fourth night last week when Jackson, noting it was clear there’s no consensus, announced it would be adjourned until April 14.

By then, a newly formed committee will have had a summit and issued a report.

Jackson said at the time the message she heard more than any other was the need for more dialogue before an ALR application.

Most of the letters and phone calls to the Optimist since then haven’t been particularly positive about the surprise move, but Jackson, noting she got legal advice the adjournment was permissible, said council needs to gather as much information as it can.

“After everything we’ve heard, there’s an awful lot of people who feel we really haven’t pursued everything in the way of information for the public and for council ... I asked the lawyers can I adjourn, take a break and sit down

with some people with a mayor’s invitation to speak about these things.

“It isn’t rocket science and it’s unfortunate people are confused by it. It’s very simple. We have simply adjourned for now and there may or may not be anything come out as a result of this, but I thought it was my duty to try.”

MURPHY’S LAW I guess when you’ve been the party of record around here for as long as anyone can remember, it’s not too worrisome to lose out on the boost a good ol’ nomination race always provides.

I realize a federal election could be triggered at any time, so in many respects it’s imperative for the Conservatives to find a replacement for retiring MP John Cummins, but when it comes to making that happen in a timely manner, these guys don’t fool around.

No sooner had Cummins announced that he was leaving federal politics after almost 18 years in Ottawa than a nomination meeting to select his successor had been scheduled. For Monday. The Monday that’s two days from now.

As I say, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it does deviate from the norm.

We have become accustomed to nomination dates that provide sufficient lead time for potential candidates to sign up members, raise their profiles and swell party coffers. The reason this happens is because these races are generally beneficial to a party.

During this time, although potential candidates are competing against one another, they are all on the same team, so the party can’t help but be cast in a positive light, removed from the bigger picture where opponents hammer them for what they did or didn’t do. There’s no doubt the provincial Liberals got a significant boost from their recent leadership race, which switched the focus from the failings of the Campbell government to how the hopefuls would chart a new course for B.C. Local Tories are far from that type of situation, but the absence of a longer nomination race robs them of the extended publicity that would go to someone trying to emerge from Cummins’ formidable shadow. As it stands now, we’ll barely find out who the potential candidates are before one is chosen, and then the winner will likely fade from sight until an election is called.

I recognize this wasn’t a local choice as nomination meetings are also being held Monday in Chilliwack and the Okanagan to replace retiring Tories in those ridings, but it still seems awfully fast. Delta-Richmond East Liberals don’t have a candidate in place and don’t appear to be in a hurry to make that happen. The same goes for the NDP.

By Monday night the Tories will have made their selection. If we go to the polls this spring, they’ll look like geniuses, but if the election isn’t until the fall or later, then it looks like an opportunity missed.

Few choices as important as upcoming HST referendum

GUEST EDITORIAL B.C. is the place to be for political junkies in 2011. Even with the Liberal leadership race over and Premier Christy Clark at the helm, we’re still looking at a provincial NDP leadership vote on April 17, a potential provincial election, municipal elections later this year and even the possibility of a federal election. All this and an HST referendum too.

I’ll continue to watch the other events unfold with interest, but right now I’m most concerned about the last one, and other British Columbians should be too. The provincial government is holding a referendum on the HST in September, although Clark has indicated she would prefer an earlier vote in June.

Research conducted for the provincial HST Information Office indicates many British Columbians are unclear about what the HST applies to and how it will benefit B.C.’s economy — and their own interests — in the long run.

For example, some people think we are paying HST on food staples (as one HST forum participant put

it: “Basically, if you open your mouth and eat anything other than grass, you are paying for it.”). This isn’t true. Taxes on basic groceries haven’t changed — they weren’t taxed under the previous system and they aren’t taxed now.

In fact, many people may not realize the taxes on most of the goods they purchase haven’t changed. We paid a combined tax of 12 per cent on everything from dish soap and DVDs to clothing and major appliances, and we still pay that under the HST. The only difference is the HST appears alone on our receipts, without a convenient “before-and-after” comparison with the previous GST and PST. Luckily, information about how the HST has actually affected British Columbians since its July 1, 2010 implementation date is beginning to roll in. Jonathan Kesselman, Canada Research Chair in Public Finance at SFU, published a paper in February that analyzes available data on the HST for the first six months and presents a figure that should reassure many: the HST resulted in just a 0.6 of one per cent increase in overall consumer prices in B.C. As Kesselman calculates, that translates to about one additional dollar for every $165 spent by the average consumer.

Statistics like that should help British Columbians decide how to vote in the referendum. But more support is coming. We’ve also got an independent panel — government appointed, but made up of non-partisan experts — working now to analyze and identify all the pros and cons of keeping the HST or returning to the old PST/GST system, including what the financial implications are for unwinding the HST. Most British Columbians want these facts. To paint the referendum — or the HST itself — as something that pits businesses against consumers is unhelpful and misses the point. As British Columbians, we all benefit when B.C.’s economy is strong and growing.

It’s not an exaggeration to call this referendum one of the most important choices that British Columbians of this generation can make, so we better make the right one. Non-government economists who have already weighed into the debate have projected the HST could generate up to $14 billion in new investments and well over 100,000 jobs in B.C. over the next 10 years.

No other single decision we can make can touch those figures.

Insult to farmland

We no longer have ample farmland, cheap oil or a stable climate with average rainfalls. People fail to see that a continued insult to farmland leads to an insecure future and soaring food prices.

I hope the mayor and council will raise the standard this time for use of farmland if they recognize the enormous wrongs of the past and need for change to business as usual. Do we want to secure a food base for our children’s future or do we want to see soaring prices and reliance on food imports from countries that cannot afford it or will be out of water?

The laws of supply and demand are very simple and very firm. Reduce supply and the price increases. We cannot choose to not eat.

No reason to ban Southlands video

Editor: Re: Council won’t watch video after getting legal advice, March 9 At the public hearing a presenter was allowed only to show the first five minutes of his Southlands video as per the protocol of allowing everyone five minutes for their presentation. Five minutes was shown and then he submitted a disc of the video for the record.

Later the municipal solicitor decreed that the mayor and council must not watch this video as part of the

public forum submissions.

I watched the entire video and I cannot figure out why it was banned.

Perhaps Delta staff or council members can enlighten me. Is “someone” assuming the mayor and council do not have enough intelligence to sort out fact from fiction?

If “someone” is offended by the video, then they should have an opportunity rebut it, but the video should never be banned or removed from the record.

The normal business practice has been to piecemeal farmland into small plots, or not work it, or do alternate uses such as landfill or golf courses, then develop it.

As government-led projects gobble up farmland faster this past decade in Delta then ever before, and that behaviour is copied

by Delta council approvals for rezoning and developers, that is the business as usual that Delta citizens have been forced to witness.

Editor: One of the most contentious questions in South Delta in the last quarter century has been, “What do we do with the Southlands?”

We have Coun. Ian Paton, a highly respected farmer on Delta council whose father spent many years on the Agricultural Land Commission, saying it should be put back in the ALR because much of it is farmable.

On the other hand we have John Savage, another highly respected though now retired farmer who spent several years as our minister of agriculture and whose family actually farmed the land for five years and found it to be very poor land.

Even the experts differ.

One thing is obvious: When dairy farming was at its peak the Spetifores found that to be its best use. How many dairy farms are there in Delta now?

If it were returned to the ALR, it would take lot of money to make it a viable farm for traditional

in-ground farming. Who is going to pay for the land treatment and what would the price of the land be to a farmer interested in buying or leasing it?

I think it is probable that over time interest in greenhouses will revive and if the land were returned to the ALR, an investor looking to go into that business would certainly look very carefully at that land. It gets more sunshine than anywhere else in the Fraser Valley and, as I understand it, there is nothing Delta can do to stop greenhouse development.

Century Group tried really hard to come up with an acceptable plan. It involved the community in its planning and has a reasonable proposal but it was overwhelmingly refused by the people of Tsawwassen that do not want the area developed for any kind of housing.

Should Century be left carrying the whole burden? Should the citizens of Tsawwassen be ready to man the ramparts for another 20 years? Why not

have the municipality, or Metro Vancouver, purchase the property for a reasonable price and let it become a nature preserve for the migrating birds? One need only look at the popularity of the Reifel Bird Sanctuary and it is obvious what a popular addition it would be to the Greater Vancouver area.

Is the ALR being used for a purpose it was never intended for? Is it being used to take care of a contentious political issue? If the real objective is to save agricultural land, then I really can’t understand all this fuss going on about the Southlands and very little talk about stopping the South Fraser Perimeter Road and the loss of good crop-producing ALR land.

To lose good land and save questionable land cut off from the rest of the farming community is not a good deal for anyone but the port authority. I believe if industry and large-scale developers have their way, there won’t be a farm in Delta 100 years from now.

• The chamber of commerce held its annual general meeting at the luncheon on Wednesday.

Incoming chair Tudor Williams said the group wants to get much closer to the grassroots of business in Delta.

“We will be much more aware of and engaged in the issues that affect the future of each of the six business communities that make up Delta — the agriculture community, Annacis, Ladner, North Delta, Tilbury and Tsawwassen.”

Williams is a research designer, strategist and analyst for TWI Surveys Inc., a Delta-based international research company.

The chamber passed three resolutions at the AGM: advocating for interchanges instead of intersections at a pair of locations along the South Fraser Perimeter Road, pursuing an economic development strategy and plan for Delta, and increasing the group’s board from 17 to 20.

Delta is very concerned about the provincial government’s “lack of commitment” to undertake improvements to the George Massey Tunnel, Mayor Lois Jackson said Wednesday.

Speaking at the Delta Chamber of Commerce’s annual general meeting, the mayor said she will be requesting new Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Blair Lekstrom make improvements to the tunnel “a very critical priority for his government.”

Jackson told the audience at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn that anticipated population growth in Surrey and the additional truck traffic from the proposed Terminal 2 at Roberts Bank “will have major impacts on tunnel traffic” and that “something must be done to address this issue.”

The tunnel opened in 1959, replacing the ferry service to Richmond.

Asked after the meeting what Delta would like to see done to the tunnel, Jackson said, “probably double it.”

During her talk the mayor also touched on the South Fraser Perimeter Road, another local transportation issue. She noted Delta agrees with the chamber’s stance that a pair of planned intersections, one in Tilbury and another in Sunbury, should be interchanges instead.

“We have dealt with this issue time and again, trying to convince the province we should be looking at interchanges and certainly we support the chamber in their efforts as well.”

The $1-billion highway that will stretch from Roberts Bank to Highway 1 in Surrey is expected to open in 2013.

In other topics, Jackson commented on Delta’s decreasing debt and its partnership with a city in India.

She said Delta’s debt will be down to $13 million at the end of 2011 and the corporation is expected to be debt free in approximately 11 years.

“That’s quite unprecedented,” she said.

Jackson also noted that Delta is hoping to have representatives from Mangalore, India visit soon.

The following are some of the calls of interest the Delta police responded to in the South Delta area between Sunday, March 6 and Sunday, March 13: Tsawwassen • March 7, 2:30 p.m., 800-block of Glenwood Place: Complainant reported that a suspicious male was looking around her property. When the suspect, who is described as 20-25 years old with a slim build, was challenged, he said he was collecting for the “Missing Persons Bureau.”

The male then jumped into a new silver compact car and fled the area.

• March 7, 10 p.m., 5500block of Wallace Avenue: Complainant reported that sometime overnight someone entered both unlocked vehicles parked in the driveway. Items stolen, valued at $400, include a Garmin GPS, CDs and a hands-free cellphone device.

• March 7, 6 p.m., 5100-block of 1A Avenue: Complainant reported that someone attempted to break into her locked vehicle that was parked in front of the residence. No entry gained to the vehicle but lock suffered damage.

• March 8, 2:23 p.m., 5500-block of 12th Avenue: A male suspect attempted to open an account at a local credit union using a stolen B.C. driver’s licence, stolen T4 statement and a forged social security card. The suspect was on a release with a promise to appear in court for a similar incident.

Police arrested the suspect who was held in cells for a show cause hearing.

• March 9, 10 p.m., 1100-block of 56th Street: The building supply store reported that sometime overnight suspects had entered the side compound and stole 20 pieces of copper pipe valued at $560.

No signs of forced entry.

• March 10, 10:20 p.m., 5600-block of 16th Avenue: Complainant reported that someone had entered her unlocked residence while she was upstairs and stole her purse containing personal ID, $100 CDN and $200 US. The purse, which was clearly visible through the kitchen window from the street, was later located in a nearby garbage can with the cash missing.

• March 11, 9 p.m., 5600-block of 16th Avenue: Complainant reported that someone had entered his residence through an unlocked front door and stole several items, including jewelry, liquor and several keys. Information regarding the items has been entered on the police computer information system (CPIC).

Suspicious male claims collecting for charity Progress Way and Brown Street: A report was received that two males with a U-haul truck were taking metal from outside a local business. Police responded and found the males, who have a history of property crime, were taking metal from the garbage bins.

• March 7, 11 p.m., 4600-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported that someone had punched in the door of his vehicle parked in the street and attempted to steal the car stereo. Damage to the vehicle: $300.

• March 9, 9 p.m., 7900block of Huston Road: During a routine patrol police found an unoccupied vehicle that was associated with males known to be casing businesses. Police located a suspect in the business in possession of a gym bag containing a quantity of copper wire cut from vehicles inside the compound. The suspect was transported to headquarters and held.

• March 10, 3 p.m., 5600-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant reported that someone had stolen her rear licence plate.

Shelters unite to help bring lost dogs home Eight municipal animal shelters, including Delta, have come together in an effort to ensure lost dogs are reunited with their owners.

Through promotion and education of the benefits of licensing, the shelters hope to increase awareness over the number of dogs licenced in each district.

Vancouver. “Compliance of dog licensing provides the tag that we use to trace the animal, giving a guarantee of reunification.”

Unlike the local SPCA, municipal shelters operate under different bylaws and funding, thereby relying on sources like licensing.

“The issue of dog licensing is so important to the municipalities that we have come together as a collective group,” says Sarah Lowe, manager of the Delta Community Animal Shelter.

“Our hope is to educate the public about the importance of licensing.”

“If a dog is licenced in Langley and they get lost in Stanley Park, they can be reunited with their owner,” says Sean Baker, general manager of the Patti Dale Animal Shelter in Langley.

“This can happen very easily because of their dog licence.”

Statistics across the municipalities show anywhere from only 25 to 70 per cent of dogs are licenced. With just a 10 per cent increase across the board, it would eliminate a lot of dogs that are left in the shelter.

“We get about six calls a week of a licenced lost dog found by a neighbour,” notes Lowe. “Because of the licence, we are able to connect them with their owner right away and the dog doesn’t even come to the shelter. We get approximately double that amount of unlicenced dogs com-

Golfers wanted Local clubs on the move to East Delta course

he Tsawwassen Early Bird Golf Club is about to start a new season and is looking for new members.

Membership co-ordinator Rod Douglas says developing camaraderie is one of the positives of the club.

“You meet a bunch of new guys, people around the area,” he says. “As you golf with different people each time you’re out you develop new friendships.”

The local group is moving to the Delta Golf Course this season due to construction at the Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club.

The East Delta course is a par 67 and measures 4,933 yards with a “challenging variety of holes with a good mix of par 3s, 4s and 5s,” according to its website.

Doug Peterson, past captain of the club and a member for eight years, says the group provides fellowship for local seniors.

“Golfing skills are secondary, enjoyment and camaraderie are

paramount,” he says.

The group, which was formed in 1991, also holds monthly tournaments.

Peterson notes the group will decide after the season whether to stay at Delta or to head back to Tsawwassen.

The club is open to men 55 and over and plays Mondays and Fridays between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. starting March 21 until Oct. 10.

“It’s a fun group. There’s no pressure,” says Douglas.

Singer helping out again at Motown Meltdown BY

Ladner’s Garfield Wilson is once again helping out the Shooting Stars Foundation.

The singer and actor turned personal trainer will be performing a little Stevie Wonder at Motown Meltdown, a fundraising show set for next Saturday

in Vancouver. “[Wonder] is one of my childhood idols, along with Michael Jackson and Marvin Gaye,” says Wilson.

Wonder, a famous American singer-songwriter who’s won over 20 Grammy Awards, shone brightly in the 1970s, says Wilson.

“In the ‘70s there was nobody better, nobody that was as relevant, nobody

that had their finger on the pulse as much [as he did].”

This will be Wilson’s third straight year singing at Motown Meltdown, a fundraiser for people living with HIV/AIDS. “It’s a really great event, a really great cause. I’m really proud to be a part of it and I’m honoured to be asked back every year.”

Wilson has been part of a

funk/soul cover band, a rock group that was a winner of the Fox’s Seeds contest in 2000 as well as enjoying his own solo career in R&B. Motown Meltdown is scheduled for next Saturday night at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver.

Wilson says he’s heard from other people across the country through e-mail, Facebook and Twitter who would like the show to come to their town.

“I’m hoping that CBC hears their call and lets us do this again and again.”

Tidy up, prune those usual suspects Cold, wind and long heavy rains made gardening a tough slog for some of us recently, but we still have a few more weeks to finish the early pruning. Soon

branches will leaf out and make it harder to see exactly what we’re cutting.

All the usual suspects should be pruned out or tidied up: branches that

have broken in winter gales and dead, diseased or crossing branches. As well, any growth that’s started blocking windows or stretching over access points such as

paths should be removed.

Witch-hazels need immediate attention if any suckering stems are growing from the rootstock under the graft. These stems are unmistakable in flowering season because the suckers hang onto many dead leaves and produce only tiny, rusty-coloured flowers. These rootstock stems are more vigorous and if allowed to remain will eventually dominate the tree.

Almost all the earlyflowering shrubs and trees should be pruned right after blooming. Even better, why not prune while they are blooming and get some flowers for the house as well. Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas), for example, usually has multiple stems and often needs some of the congested middle ones pruned out. Its bright yellow flowers last a long time inside.

Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle (Lonicera fragrantissima) bloom better if one or two old stems are removed each year. Both can spread quite widely and as they get older will also need pruning for shape.

This is the time to cut buddleia back to a foot (30 cm) or so from the ground.

Because it flowers on new growth, it will rush to put out fresh stems that produce pyramidial heads of pink, white or purple flowers in August. If it’s not pruned, buddleia will grow so tall it flowers out of sight.

It’s also time to cut red-twig and yellow-twig dogwoods back to a few inches above ground level.

Lavender can be sheared back now but only into the green wood because the old, brown areas of stem are reluctant to re-shoot.

After severe temperatures this year, hardy fuchsia stems will have died to ground level and most gardeners will need to cut them right down. But gardeners whose hardy fuchsias always get chomped by deer may want to experiment with leaving all the erect stems.

It seems that Bambi has no interest in getting close to a face full of dead twigs.

Gardeners who need to work around these fuchsias should take care to wear eye protection.

The Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir begins its spring 2011 season with a concert in Tsawwassen next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at South Delta Secondary.

“We’ve always been well supported from people in Delta,” says Tsawwassen’s Bob Baturin, a member of the choir for about 11 years.

“There’s usually a lot of excitement when [people] hear the Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir is coming.”

Joining the choir will be members of the renowned UBC Opera Ensemble. The concert marks the fifth joint appearance of the ensemble and the VWMC. Their program combines traditional spirituals, hymns, folk songs, show tunes and grand opera.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this season, the 100-member VWMC is well known to local audiences, having appeared many times in Delta.

Heartbreaker for Ice Hawks

Delta’s playoff run ends with game seven 3-2 loss to Sockeyes in conference finals BY

It was quite the compliment that will still do little to heal the wounds of the Delta Ice Hawks following their gut wrenching seven game series loss to the Richmond Sockeyes.

Head coach Judd Lambert knew his team had dodged a major bullet by getting past the Ice Hawks in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League’s Tom Conference finals.

Even with a rash of injuries that resulted in three affiliate players being in the line-up for Wednesday night’s deciding game, the Sockeyes still managed to sneak out of Minoru Arena with a 3-2 victory.

“We had six regular guys who couldn’t play,” explained Lambert whose team now faces the Abbotsford Pilots. “We played with who we got and they did what we asked of them to do.

They can feel good about themselves beating probably the best team in the league, including us.”

That’s quite a statement given the Sockeyes also finished ahead of the Ice Hawks in the regular season with a league best record.

Lambert was referring to a Delta line-up that was loaded with offensive talent and had all but one returning to the blueline from last year’s squad that reached the final.

Perhaps too much firepower actually worked against an Ice Hawk team that never seemed overly comfortable playing in tight low scoring games that are

so typical of post-season hockey.

The end result were some critical errors throughout the series — enough for the Sockeyes to capitalize when goalie Nick Enegren couldn’t bail them out.

“Richmond limited their mistakes and we didn’t,” said Delta head coach Dave McLellan.

“Sometimes we get stuck forechecking with three guys trapped.

It was something they got away with a lot in (the regular season) and were successful for the most part. Still, I thought we created a lot of (dangerous) offensive rushes tonight but didn’t capitalize the way we normally do.”

The Hawks had produced late third period goals to lead to overtime wins in games five and six.

They nearly did it again.

Eli Wiebe’s goal midway through the final frame gave Richmond a 3-1 lead. The visitors pulled within one when Kye Benjaminson scored his second of the night with 4:40 remaining.

Delta was back in familiar territory except this time there would be no equalizer despite Konrad Sander missing a glorious chance in the dying seconds.

Lambert said his team’s late game troubles weren’t a case of being too conservative but rather dealing with a determined opponent.

“That is a good hockey team,” he said of his conference rival.

“When their backs were against the wall in those two games, you could really see them (turning it on). It was helpful we had a two goal lead tonight and fortunately we were able to hold them off.”

“One of the things we talked about was getting our offence

more spread out and it just didn’t happen,” added McLellan. “Our guys deserve a lot of credit, though, for never quitting. It’s unfortunate the top two teams in the league are in one division and they really battled it out in this series.”

“When I found out a few weeks ago that I would be facing the Jays it was immediately something that I was looking for-

ward to and excited about,” said Robson.

The Jays got to Robson for three runs on three hits and a couple of walks. He did manage two strikeouts. The Juniors lost 9-0.

Sun Devils win provincial banner in meet hosted by DSS MARK BOOTH

Delta Gymnastics found time in its own version of March Madness to pull off another successful showing for its popular high school program.

While the society is getting set to re-locate to its new home in Ladner, it still managed to host last weekend’s provincial high school championships at Delta secondary school.

The meet featured over 50 teams.

Not only did equipment have to be brought in and set-up to turn the two DSS gyms into competition venues, social functions also had to be planned to entertain the 250 student athletes. A movie night/ pool party was held at the Ladner Leisure Centre on Friday and a banquet at the Coast Hotel in Tsawwassen Saturday.

High school program coordinator and coach Kristina Sharp admits this was exactly an ideal time to be hosting such a

large event with the club preparing for its big move, but there was little choice when the decision was made over a year ago.

“It was just basically our turn,” said Sharp, who also happens to serve on the executive that oversees gymnastics at the school level. “No one is exactly lining up to do it and we have been involved for a long time and had lots of success.

“It took a lot of work by a lot of volunteers to pull it off. We couldn’t have done it without them. The Coast Tsawwassen Inn also generously donated the room to host the banquet.”

A unique relationship with Delta Gymnastics has resulted in Delta and South Delta secondary school thriving in the sport and this year was no exception.

Delta had previously won two overall titles and this time it was South Delta’s turn.

Individual highlights included top three finishes for: Emilie Sarkissian, Hailey Church, Elissa

Morgan, Nicole Downie, Maria Starko, Mallory Pope, Emma Starko, Mitchell Farquharson, Max Elwood and Zach Starko.

High school gymnastics features five different levels of competition. Delta opens its doors to student athletes three times a week.

Gymnasts from Vancouver College and Richmond Christian also participated.

The coaching staff also includes Rachael Fortier, Heather Henderson and Cody Forbes. The program would not be possible without the teacher-sponsor support of Rick and Marion Marks (SDSS) and Susan Hayes (DSS).

This weekend, Delta Gymnastics is hosting the Spring Fever and Zone Championships.

On Monday, the moving vans arrive for relocation to Ladner. Other upcoming events for the Society includes the Barefoot Ball which will take place in its new home and the annual Delta Invitational which runs from May 6-8 at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

Predeceased by her husband John (Jack) and daughter Catherine, she is survived by her daughter Maureen McPhee, granddaughters Christie and Kelly and many nieces and nephews. Bea was born in East Kelowna and moved to Vancouver in 1939. She later lived in Montclair, California and Richmond, BC, before moving to Ladner in 1972. Bea volunteered at the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop for many years. An informal celebration of her life will be held at the family home Saturday, March 26th from 2:00 - 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Delta Hospital Foundation.

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Ted Matson, on March 15, 2011. He was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Margaret Matson. He is survived by his loving wife, Helen, in their 50th year of marriage. His sons, Thor (Tammy) of Oakville, Ontario and Mark (Heather) of Tsawwassen and five cherished grandchildren.

Erik, Joel, Mike, Devon and Hannah. His sister, Dorothy (Jim) Smith of Whitehorse, Yukon. Ted was born in Atlin, B.C. on August 27, 1935. He spent many years in the mining industry in the Atlin area. Although Ted and his family lived in Tsawwassen for many years, he always looked forward to his summers in his beloved Atlin. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener. Ted was a long time Mason and a member of Atlinto Lodge, AF&AM No. 42, GRBC. The Funeral service will be held at St. David’s Anglican Church on Friday, March 25th, at 1:30pm. As expressions of sympathy donations to the Irene Thomas Hospice would be appreciated. Many thanks to Dr. Duncan for her kind care and the wonderful nursing staff at the Irene Thomas Hospice.

John will be fondly missed by wife Gayle, children Mike (Laura), Steve (Lorien) and Lisa, cherished grandsons Andrew, Justin, Samuel and Jack and siblings Mary Jane Tigert, Laurel Halper and Larry Quattrocchi. Born in Livermore Falls, Maine, to Sam and Louise Quattrocchi, John’s family came to St. Catharines, Ontario, in the early 1950s.

John graduated from St. Catharines Collegiate and Vocational Institute in 1958 and went on to receive a degree in applied science from Queen’s University in 1962 and his MBA from the University of Western Ontario in 1965. After wonderful years in Montreal and Mississauga, to their considerable fortune John and family headed west to Tsawwassen, B.C. In the natural beauty of the west, John fully embraced his love of the outdoors and his natural ability to drive great distances to hike, snowshoe and explore.

A celebration of John’s life will be held 10:30 am on Monday March 21, at Saint David’s Anglican Church, Tsawwassen, B.C. In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to the Delta Hospital Foundation or to Abbeyfield St. David’s Seniors Home.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our mother on Thursday, March 10th after a short illness.

Mom was born and raised in Dauphin, Manitoba and we believe it was this good 'prairie stock' that helped carry her through the ups and downs of life with grace, fortitude, strength and love. Mom and Dad led full lives with lots of travel, friends and family. The last fifty years, off and on, here in Tsawwassen. Mom enjoyed her gardens, especially her fresh cut flowers which graced her table every week. She golfed, getting a hole in one, she curled getting an eight ender and later when bending was not as easy, bowling.

Mom’s number one joy though was her family as revealed in the contents of her safe. No jewels just the homemade cards and letters given to her by her children and grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Dick, survived by her three children, Ken (Brenda) of Ontario, Richard (Diana) of Delta, and Lynn (Robin) of Delta, thirteen grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Some of her last words were ' I love all my family'. We will miss you terribly Mom, be in peace with Dad.
